The New Brunswick cymbal factory that was a crashing success

Sabian cymbal company began with a zildjian family business dispute.

Social sharing.

The tiny New Brunswick town of Meductic, on the Saint John River, is home to one major employer whose name is known to drummers around the world: Sabian.

The company makes high-quality cymbals that have been used by drummers including Phil Collins, Tyler Stewart of Barenaked Ladies and Rush's Neil Peart.

But back in 1969, what is now the Sabian factory was home to a company then called AZCO, a subsidiary of the Zildjian cymbal company.

"It's the only plant in Canada devoted to the trade, and is becoming a mecca for drummers from all over the world," said CBC reporter Bill Curtis, as the camera showed the factory machines and craftsmen at work inside.

AZCO was run by the Zildjian family, originally from Armenia, which had been casting cymbals using a carefully protected method since 1623.

"When Avedis Zildjian immigrated from Turkey, he brought the secret to Boston," said Curtis. "Now, it's in Canada but still a closely guarded family secret."

sabian cymbals factory tour

The company had opened a factory in Meductic for reasons explained by general manager Willard Way.

"We have wide open spaces here, no traffic problems, plenty of clean fresh air for manufacturing cymbals, and a good labour force," he said.

According to the Sabian website, Way was a local fishing guide who had been entrusted by a member of the Zildjian family, Robert, to help set up the Meductic operation.

And he wasn't about to give away the secret of AZCO's cymbals.

"It's a secret in mixing metal and casting," was all Way would say.

But the family wasn't shy about supplying the reason for the plant's location.

"The truth is, the Zildjians love fishing," said Curtis. "And that's how they discovered Meductic. And because they combined business and pleasure, crashing cymbals of Meductic vibrate around the world."

The rift that split the company

In 1990, the CBC business program Venture  revisited the factory in Meductic, which was by then making cymbals under the Sabian name.

A disagreement years earlier between the sons of Avedis Zildjian, Robert and Armand, had seen Robert form a new company he called Sabian, using the Meductic plant for manufacturing.

The two companies were now in direct competition for drummers' dollars, and reporter Colin King wanted to hear from both of them — but only the Sabian branch would talk.

"One time when I was younger, my uncle said to me, 'you have to remember, kid, you're cymbal royalty,'" said Andy Zildjian. "There's no such thing as cymbal royalty. I mean, we're just — we're making cymbals."

He was speaking from Sabian's Boston office, not far from HQ for Sabian's competition, which was simply called Zildjian.

Zildjian has counted among its artists Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, Max Weinberg of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones.

"Before the brother split, Zildjian virtually owned what's now a $40-million game," said King. "In eight years, though, Sabian's taken a quarter of the expanding market."

Venture visited the Sabian factory, where workers could be seen hammering away.

"Sabian spins a good story," said King, "of sturdy, honest Canadians whose rural values of solid workmanship remain unsullied by those big-city ways."

In his office, Robert Zildjian described what had happened when his father died, leaving the Zildjian business to two sons.

"Now, when he went to Heaven and looked down at what really happened, he could see it was an unsuccessful transition."

According to Zoom Company Info, Sabian's 2019 revenues stood at $23 million, while Zildjian's 2019 revenues were $33 million.

Nice quick read. Sabian has done alot to increase their market share.

I liked the part about a cymbal having to age...I was just thinking about that and there they talked about it.

I also liked the part about all the great talent that has walked thru their vault. Cool.

I have played a lot of Sabians. Some of them are very complex and the company has nice ideas like mini chinas and high hats with rivets in them etc. ( I own the latter)....

I'm still a Paiste man...let's see their factory!

Cool artivle DJ. I have been playing Sabian's for the most of my career and their cymbals are awesome. Working in the drum shop at Guitar Center, I have had the Sabian reps. come by and say howdy and answer any questions that we had (I haven't seen Zildjian or Paiste's yet). Really nice people they have and even nicer Cymbals.

Great article.

My brother has been using Sabian cymbals for 10 years now.

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

"A very enjoybale day in Moscow. We had a very nice and knowledgeable guide Anastasia.(Nastia) She was very passionate about the City and we learnt so much in our brief four hours walk with her! Certainly this walking tour added a lot of value to our Moscow Holiday. A great idea to educate visitors about Russia and Moscow. The group was intimate enough to ask questions and stop for snacks etc..we thoriughly enjoyed it and would highly reccomend it.Carry on doing a great job!"

"I really enjoyed the tour, it was a great experience, very informative and fun. I will definitely tell everybody about that tour, keep it it is a fantastic idea!"

"Sorry I do not remember the names :( ... They were very talkative and very into everything. I think they both really love the city, and they made me feel like this to. They knew much about History, which was very informative! Great guides!!!"

"We partook of the fantastic Petersburg Free Tour. Due to our timing during the low season (shockingly not everyone is flocking to Moscow while the average temperature is 15F), it ended up being just us and Sonia, the afore-mentioned super-guide. She quickly ascertained the limited scope of our wanderings.."

The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle.
