It is then, when a saint asked him to build a tank combining the waters of 365 tributaries and take a bath in it to cure his ailment. That is how the ‘Upper Lake’ came into existence. Originally called ‘Bada Talab’, it was renamed to ‘Bhojtal’ in 2011 to honor this great king. The lake also holds the status of being the oldest man-made lake of India.

Located on the shores of pristine ‘Motia Talaab’, the ‘Taj-ul-Masjid’ is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Bhopal and needless to say, a significant site of religious tourism for Muslims who travel here from far off corners of the country and the world. Interesting History

The wife of Gond tribal ruler, Nizam Shah, Rani Kamlapati was known for her luminous beauty and unmatched charm. Local legends describe her as a queen who was more beautiful than a fairy, more delicate than a rose and more graceful than a doe. During olden times, Bhopal used to be a small village that was part of the Gond Kingdom. Obsessed by the beauty of Kamlapati, one of the rivals of Nizam Shah poisoned him thereby, leaving the queen alone and insecure.

To protect herself from the ghastly eyes of the rival ruler and to avenge the death of her husband, she asked for help from the then ruler of Malwa province, Dost Mohammad Khan in lieu of Bhopal. Dost Mohammad readily helped the beautiful lady and in reward got the territory of Bhopal which was later converted into the capital of the Malwa Kingdom.

The queen continued to reign over the Gond Kingdom thereafter for over a decade with the support of Dost Mohammad. Some local legends also state that Dost Mohammad deceived the queen and in order to save her honor, she jumped into the lake, thereby killing herself.

Even after more than 30000 years of their existence, the conditions of these exquisite paintings remain intact, inviting hundreds of historians and archaeologists every year to carry out their research on the lifestyle and social practices of early humans during the bygone times; one can easily infer the scenes of communal dances, hunting, soldier & animal fights and drinking & partying men from these paintings that adorn walls and ceilings of the caves.

An interesting feature of these paintings is that they all are executed in vibrant colors of whites, reds, yellows and greens, making you wonder about the intelligence and creative abilities of the prehistoric men to combine various natural elements such as leaves, vegetables, red sandstone and manganese to produce different colors out of them.

While there are almost over 600 natural rock shelters in the area, scattered amidst thick forests of Sal and teak, only about 12 are open to the public and are properly marked with numbers to enable visitors not to get lost in the confusing maze. Just a little up from the caves is a small temple that people often visit during their trip to Bhimbetka. Nestled in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, Sanchi is an important historical and archaeological site, located at a distance of around 46 Km. from Bhopal. Known for its ancient Stupas and other incredible Buddhist structures dating back to the Mauryan era between 3rd century BC and 12th century AD, the place also holds a great religious significance for Buddhists, who swarm here in huge numbers from different corners of the globe.

Most significant of all the archaeological recoveries in this small town is the ‘ Sanchi Stupa’ , the oldest stone structure in India built during 3rd century BC on the orders of then Mauryan Emperor, Asoka. Located on the same Malwa Plateau as Indore , Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh state, positions itself at par with the commercial capital.

Bhopal, the name in itself depicts the live life king size persona and was amongst the largest princely states in the pre-independence era, after Hyderabad. 

Historically, Bhopal is noted for its 100 years of Begum rule i.e, ruled by women rulers, who brought basic infrastructure facilities like waterworks, railways, postal services etc to the city. 

Bhopal, which grappled under the tragic industrial accident, of The Bhopal Gas Tragedy has emerged itself from the negatives of the past. Upper Lake | Bada Talab

Upper Lake, Bada Talab, and Bhojtaal are a few of the names which are associated with this lake. It is encircled by Van Vihar National park on one end and the fields on the other. It is so scenic that there are so many restaurants and cafes along the edge of the lake which makes it easier to have a look at the breathtaking view of this mesmerizing lake. It is one of the Bhopal famous places and spending an evening here is a must.

Bada Talab is home to beautiful birds like Cranes, white storks and black-necked storks. Bird watchers have sighted beautiful and rare birds on this very lake. It also supports many species of plants and microorganisms along with those of reptiles too. 

One can go fishing and boating on the boat club and kayaking and canoeing at the National sailing school which is generally open throughout the course of the day. 

Bhojtaal is of great importance to the locals both culturally and socially. It is also responsible single-handedly to supply drinking water to the residents of Bhopal. Van Vihar National Park 

Van Vihar is a National Park or a drive-through Zoo . It has an amazing combination of wetlands, elevated land, different types of slopes, plains and small and big pools of water hence conserving animals in their natural habitats. 

It is home to all kinds of animals carnivores, herbivores and reptiles and various species of birds too. It is located along the edges of Upper Lake which makes it scenic and greatly popular amongst tourists as well as wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. 

Van Vihar has definitely changed the conventional definition of the zoo. One can not only spot animals here but go on birding trips. It houses a Bird interpretation Center and a Butterfly Park too. It also functions as a rescue, conservation and breeding centre for various animals. It is open from morning 0600 hrs to evening 0600 hrs and closed only on Holi and Diwali.

Taj-ul Masjid 

Taj-ul-Masjid is the largest mosque in India and one of the largest in the world, built by one of the Begums of Bhopal. It is one of the unmissable places to visit in Bhopal. It stands tall within the city limits and clearly visible from multi-storied buildings almost all over the city. 

Its architecture and decorations have great similarities to the Jama Masjid of Delhi. The structure of the mosque comprises three domes and two minarets and is located on the banks of the Motia Talab. The look and grandeur of this mosque are unique and hence the name, Taj-Ul which means the crown of Mosques.

National Museum of Mankind 

If Anthropology interests you, then the National Museum of Mankind is for you. It is curated with the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, Govt of India. 

This museum depicts all the information about human evolution with respect to India and Indian culture. It goes beyond the place and time and shows how humankind evolved in different terrains of the desert, coasts, and mountains as also the tribal habitat. All the exhibits are categorized under Open Exhibitions, Indoor Galleries and temporary exhibits. Visiting this place is quite a knowledge-gaining experience.

Gauhar Mahal

Gauhar Mahal is one of the important and oldest palaces of the Nawabs of the princely state of Bhopal. There is no definite date proof of the construction of the palace but it is assumed that it was constructed during the rule of Nazar Mohammad Khan in early 18th century. The palace was named Gauhar Mahal after Gauhar Begum, wife of Nawab Nazar Mohammad Khan.

The architecture of the palace is a blend of Mughal, Rajput and local style influences. The combination of multi-coloured arches on two pillar built in Diwan-e-khas and the flower leaves on the gate seems to be influenced by Mughal architecture.

Tribal Museum, Bhopal

The main concept of curating a tribal museum is to bridge the gap between the common man and the lesser-known tribal communities of the state. This is beautifully done through various artefacts and motifs which show their tribal lifestyle. 

The lifestyles of the seven major tribes of Madhya Pradesh are depicted through their crafts in beautiful galleries. These tribes are Bhil, Gond, Korku, Baiga, Sahariya, Kol and Bhariya. This place is a three-storied building which shows the life values of these tribes along with their graceful lifestyle and spiritual beliefs. 

Sair Sapata

As the name suggests, Bhimbetka is actually Bhimbaithka, meaning the sitting place of Bhim. 

Located about 45 km south of Bhopal, Bhimbetka is a rock shelter which is declared a world heritage site by UNESCO, having evidence of human habitation in this area of Madhya Pradesh during the stone age. These caves have paintings which range from various eras like Mesolithic and Paleolithic etc. The study of these caves and paintings helps archaeologists to understand the evolution of man through these periods of time. 

It is open from morning 6 am to 6 pm during all seasons.

Place where Tropic of Cancer passes 

Tropic of Cancer is an imaginary line that is parallel to the equator and passes through our country in several states. On the globe, till this latitude, the sun is exactly overhead and beyond this, it starts to slant. This line has been very well indicated on the highway by the Govt of Madhya Pradesh for the tourists.

Sanchi Stupa

Sanchi Stupa is one of the oldest structures built in ancient India and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

These can be further accessorized into Stoles, Curtains, Cushion Covers and Dupattas. Pithora Paintings

Traditionally done on walls and lately, on canvas, these are practised by Bhil and Bhilala tribes which find origins in the State of Madhya Pradesh. They have great similarities with the paintings of the Rathwa tribe in Eastern Gujarat. The paintings are made of white colour and have no feature of ornamentation. Natural colours are used and the paintings depict the lifestyle of these tribes. Scenes like harvesting, childbirth or any mythological stories are generally seen in them.

Bhopal, also known as the `the City of Begums` has a significant history. Between 1819 and 1926, it was ruled by the generation of Begums for over 100 years, who gave the city its waterworks, railways, postal system, and municipality. The Begums of Bhopal were great reformists and patrons of education, art, culture, and public works. They also built several great monuments, which still stand as testimonies to the city's celebrated past.

Bhopal is adorned by beautiful lakes and striking landscapes. Towards the north, you'll be welcomed by the old city that encompasses fascinating mosques, narrow alleys, amazing food corners, and buzzing chowks. On the other side of the upper lake is the new Bhopal. Modern, with wide roads, shopping complexes, plush hotels, and restaurants. Both contrasting sides are well-connected and offer something to everyone!

PLACES TO VISIT IN BHOPAL

Bhopal, often known as the "City of Lakes," boasts two magnificent lakes, Upper Lake and Lower Lake.

Raja Bhoj constructed the Upper Lake, known as "Bada Talab," in the 11th century. The 36.1 sq km lake is flanked by a lovely garden and Kamla Park. It is the ideal location for water activities. The "Chota Talab" is located east of Upper Lake, and the two urban water bodies combined are referred to as "Bhoj Wetland". The lake's management also provides boat rides on paddle, sail, and motor boats in addition to sightseeing opportunities. One may enjoy the cool breeze and breathtaking views of Bhopal while riding.

Gohar Mahal

Qudsia Begum chose this vantage point along the road that circles the Upper Lake, to build her first-ever castle between 1819 and 1837. It serves as a magnificent historical sentinel, bearing witness to the splendours of Bhopal's renowned royal families. It is a fusion of Hindu and Mughal architectural traditions, covering an area of approximately 4.65 acres. The many portions of this maze-like structure are reached through winding passageways and steep flights of stairs that provide a breathtaking view of the Upper Lake.

One can shop for traditional handicrafts at the government emporium, Mrignayani located here. Gohar Mahal is a protected site and is a venue for frequent craft fairs.

Birla Mandir

The impressive Lakshmi Narayan Temple or Birla Mandir was constructed by Hindustan Charity Trust between 1960 and 1964. It is located on the highest peak of the Arera hills, now known as Lakshminarayana Giri. The ochre and red building feature a sacred yellow flag perched atop the spire and is decorated with holy Hindu symbols. The temple offers panoramic views of both the old and new Bhopal from its campus. It is silhouetted against the clear sky and surrounded by lush, well-kept lawns. Beside the temple, there is a Birla museum which houses some amazing artefacts and antique sculptures.

Van Vihar National Park

The Van Vihar National Park is a zoological park that is bordered by Upper Lake. The park is spread over 445 hectares and is home to several wild animals like tiger, lion, bear, hyena and herbivores like cheetal, sambhar, and blackbuck. The atmosphere of the park is filled with the constant chirping of numerous birds in the park. So far, over 200 species have been listed, including the Common Greenshank, Eurasian Spoonbill, Grey Hornbill, cormorants, etc. The proximity to the lake adds beauty to its landscape.

Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya

South of the Upper Lake sprawls the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya a.k.a. the National Museum of Man, the largest anthropological museum in India, and one of the biggest in Asia. On an undulating terrain of over 200 acres, one can see an open-air exhibition of human habitations. Life-size dwelling units of the tribal, coastal and Himalayan villages are built in traditional architectural styles using indigenous raw materials, housing different ethnographic objects.

Tribal Museum

The Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum in Bhopal takes you on an immersive journey through the culture and tells the stories of tribal heritage through full-scale models and colourful art installations and performances. It is one of the best museums in India where one can also witness magnificent traditional music, dance and drama performances hosted by the museum.

Regional Science Center

Fascinated by the Jama Masjid in Delhi, Shah Jahan Begum wanted a replica to be built in Bhopal. However, the structure of Taj-ul-Masajid was found to be much larger in comparison to Shah Jahan's Jama Masjid.

This is one of the most serene dams of Bhopal. Bhimbetka Rock Shelters: On the highway leading to Hoshangabad, the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka are situated about 45 km to the southeast of Bhopal. The site is 10 km long and around 3 km wide.

Sanchi Stupa: Sanchi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated 49 km from Bhopal, known for its stupas, pillars and stunning gateways.

Jagdishpur: The forgotten capital of Bhopal, Jagdishpur is just 15 km from the city of lakes. Famous for its rich legacy, one can explore Chaman Mahal, Rani Mahal and Gond Mahal during their trip to Jagdishpur.

Beejasan Mata Temple, Salkanpur: Vindhyavasni Beejasan devi temple, dedicated to the goddess Durga, is one of the major spiritual tourist destinations situated in the Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh. It is located around 70 km from Bhopal by road and the nearest railway station is Hoshangabad.

By Air: Raja Bhoj Airport in Bhopal is situated at a distance of 15 km from the city centre. Bhopal is well-connected to other major airports in the country.

By Rail: Bhopal Junction (Station Code: BPL), located near Hamidia Road is the main railway station of Bhopal. The newly inaugurated Rani Kamlapati Railway station is also one of the major stations of the city. Bhopal is on one of the two main Delhi to Mumbai railway lines and also on the main line to the southern state capitals of Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Thiruvananthapuram.

By Road: There are extensive bus services (private and state) to cities within the region and interstate. The major Bus stand of Bhopal, ISBT is located just 3.5 km from Rani Kamlapati Railway station.

How to reach Bhopal?

The Upper Lake is by far the most important lake in Bhopal, and is also popularly referred to as the Bhojtal. Located to the west of Bhopal, this artificial lake has the title of being the country’s oldest lake. It is also known as Bada Talab by the natives that live there. The lake is the principal supply of drinkable water for the inhabitants, and it provides approximately thirty million gallons of drinking water each year to meet their needs.

This stunningly expansive body of water was given its name after King Bhoj, who constructed the lake in the eleventh century by clogging the Kolans River. Folklore here is that the ruler made this enormous lake so that he could treat the skin ailment that he suffered from. The sculpture of Raja Bhoj may be seen atop the pillar that can be found on one of the lake’s corners. An overbridge known as Pul Pukhta sits between the Upper Lake and the Lower Lake to create the separation.

The boat club was created on the Upper Lake’s eastern side, and it now provides a variety of water activities for guests to enjoy, including parasailing, kayaks, paddling, and rafting, amongst others. The picturesque Kamala Park may be seen in the neighbourhood. Given that the royal garden serves as a gathering place for those who are enthusiastic about experiencing new things, it is quite busy during the high season. Bhopal visiting places would include the boat club, the sunset, and the aquarium, all while being serenaded by the fresh air.

The Upper Lake may be accessed with little effort. The airport and train station are both within easy reach. About nine to ten kilometres separate you from the airport, while the nearest train station is located about six kilometres away. The closest bus stops are at Kilol Park and Polytechnic; from there, it’s roughly a kilometre of walking.

The Central Zoo Authority oversees the management of Van Vihar, a nature reserve and botanical habitat in Bhopal. It is near Bhopal’s Shyamla Hills, just next to the Upper Lake. It is a paradise for nature-lovers since the animals are maintained close to their environmental conditions.

A wide range of creatures and birds may be seen, notably panthers, cheetahs, Nilgai, leopards, and wagtails, among others. In order to have the greatest chance of sighting a white tiger, plan your trip around July and September.

Van Vihar’s convenient location makes it a popular residential and commercial area. Chickoo Dwar is one of two entrances, the other being Ramu Dwar. Cheeku Dewar’s closest bus stop is located at the Kilok Park stop. Also, the park is near the end of Lake Road, so that is another option for getting there.

The closest bridge is Bhadbhada Bridge, which connects Ramu Dwar. To get to the entrance of Van Vihar, you will need to arrange for a private vehicle, such as a car or auto rickshaw, since no public transportation goes there.

It is situated about one kilometre from Van Vihar National Park and nine kilometres from Bhopal Junction. The Rani Kamlapati Palace is a historic palace that can be found in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The construction of the mosque was initiated by Nawab Shah Jahan Begum of Bhopal (1868-1901) during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar and continued to be built by her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum, till her lifetime. But the mosque was incomplete due to lakh of funds. After a long lay-off, its construction began once again in 1971 and was completed by 1985. The entrance (eastern) gate was renovated grandly using ancient motifs from circa 1250 Syrian mosques by the contribution of the Emir of Kuwait to commemorate the memory of his departed wife.
