Remembering you, ed, alex inducted into modern drummer hall of fame.

Alex Van Halen at his drum kit

September 5, 2023: Alex Van Halen’s place in the pantheon of rock ’n’ roll drummers is legendary. The incredible body of work that he created alongside his brother Eddie is memorialized in Van Halen’s historic catalog of genre-defining music. With each new album, the group, which initially also featured bassist Michael Anthony and vocalist David Lee Roth, further developed its unique brand of music. Since Day 1, the foundation of that sound was the bottomless rumble and stratospheric crack of Alex Van Halen’s drumming.

Though informed by the heaviest of classic rock’s first-generation bands, from the outset Van Halen also had an ear to the future, retaining and even expanding their popularity in the midst of the new wave era, when they unabashedly incorporated keyboard hooks yet never betrayed their hard-rock base. Alex, like Eddie a self-described “tone chaser,” was deeply invested in keeping the VH sound contemporary and exploratory, imbuing his drum performances not only with gargantuan beats and blazing fills, but captivating and idiosyncratic tones.

As much as any drummer in the history of rock, Alex Van Halen helped define the signature sound of his band—which is all the more startling given the fact that his guitar-playing brother is among the most influential players in the history of the music. Alex’s energetic and unpredictable playing style and the unique bark of his sonic attack add an air of excitement to the music, and set the stage for the band’s larger-than-life persona. Blending many influences, such as big band swing, blues, early rock ’n’ roll, and even African drumming, Alex chooses from a wide palette.

And as his playing evolved from album to album and tour to tour, so did Alex’s setup. Usually going for higher-pitched toms and ultra-deep bass drums, he would often experiment with different gear and technology to bring something new to the table. Incorporating Rototoms, timbales, cowbells, tube drums, and electronics, Alex spares no expense when it comes to finding the right equipment to achieve the sounds that are in his head.

Perhaps the most significant event in the recent history of the band, however, came in late 2020, with the passing of Eddie Van Halen. The compilation of this book, including Modern Drummer’s most recent interview with Alex Van Halen, was completed prior to the news of Eddie’s passing. Given that the constant throughout all of Van Halen’s achievements—and what guaranteed their stature not only on the charts but in popular culture—was the bloodline of the Van Halen brotherhood, this book can be viewed not only as a tribute to one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, but to the glorious music that Alex and Eddie created together.

Los Angeles - Van Halen will release a new boxed set this fall spotlighting the band’s second incarnation, with singer Sammy Hagar , guitarist Eddie Van Halen , drummer Alex Van Halen , and bassist Michael Anthony . The upcoming set includes newly remastered versions of four multi-platinum studio albums, along with a selection of rarities recorded between 1989 and 2004.

THE COLLECTION II will be available on October 6 on 5 LPs for $124.98 and 5 CDs for $49.98. Pre-order both versions HERE . All the music in the set was mastered directly from the original master tapes, a process overseen by the band’s longtime engineer, Donn Landee.

The new set is the long-awaited sequel to The Collection , a compilation released in 2015 that focused on the six studio albums recorded by the band’s original line-up, which featured singer David Lee Roth. THE COLLECTION II picks up where its predecessor left off and covers the four consecutive #1 albums released during the Hagar era: 5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991), and Balance (1995).

The journey begins with 5150 , Van Halen’s seventh studio album and the band’s first to claim the top spot on the Billboard 200 . Certified platinum six times in the U.S., the record treated fans to hits like “Dreams,” “Love Walks In,” and “Why Can’t This Be Love,” which peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The group returned two years later with OU812 , a quadruple-platinum smash that delivered four Billboard Hot 100 hits, including “Finish What Ya Started” and “When It’s Love.”

The accolades continued with For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge , which earned Van Halen its first Grammy ® Award for Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Album. Debuting at #1 and staying there for three weeks, the album achieved triple-platinum certification. The record produced an incredible seven singles, including hits like “Poundcake,” “Top Of The World,” and “Right Now.”

In 1993, the band released its first live album, Live: Right Here, Right Now , before returning in 1995 with Balance , its final studio album with Hagar. The album was another commercial triumph, debuting at #1, selling more than three million copies, and earning a Grammy ® nomination for “The Seventh Seal.”

THE COLLECTION II concludes with Studio Rarities 1989-2004, an exclusive compilation that assembles eight gems from the Hagar era for the first time. Among these rarities is “Crossing Over,” the B-Side to Balance’s “Can’t Stop Lovin’ You”, and the band’s only non-album B-side.

The compilation boasts other exceptional highlights, including the band’s cover of Little Feat’s “A Apolitical Blues” and the instrumental “Baluchitherium,” which were originally left off the vinyl versions of OU812 and Balance, respectively. Additionally, the set features two songs the band contributed to the Twister Soundtrack – “Humans Being” and the Grammy ® -nominated “Respect The Wind.”

Rounding out the set are “It’s About Time,” “Up For Breakfast,” and “Learning To See,” which were recorded during the band’s temporary reunion with Hagar in 2004. All three debuted that year on Van Halen’s second greatest hits collection, The Best of Both Worlds .

Van Halen Tribute Tour Announced for 2024

Sammy Hagar is getting the band back together! Well, sort of. A Van Halen tribute tour is set to begin next year but without some of the names you might expect. Former Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar will be joined by bassist Michael Anthony, guitarist Joe Satriani, and drummer Jason Bonham for The Best Of All Worlds tour.

Founding Van Halen drummer and brother of the late Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen, former Van Halen vocalist David Lee Roth, and Jason Newsted are not involved in the tour. Wolfgang previously performed as a part of Van Halen but now has his own band called Mammoth WVH, a nod to his father and uncle’s first band together called Mammoth.

Hagar shared about the new tour, “It’s crazy to think that it’ll be 20 years since Mikey and I played these songs with Van Halen on the 04′ Best Of Both Worlds tour. With Joe on board, we can take a deeper dive into those years. We’re going to touch on some hits from my entire career but seeing fans old and new really embrace the new collection set off something in Mikey and I. We were at my Birthday Bash in Cabo for my 76th and looked at each other and high fived, like ‘let’s do it.’ We pulled out a couple of them and it was an instant lovefest with the fans from our first riffs. The music we created is going to outlive us all. They deserve to be heard so it’s time we go out and serve the fans that music, while we still can.”

The new collection Hagar is referring to is a box set featuring all four of Hagar’s Van Halen albums called The Collection II . Check out the tour dates below.

About Loverboy:

For more than 40 years, Loverboy has been “Working for the Weekend” (and on the weekend), delighting audiences around the world since forming in 1979, when vocalist Mike Reno was introduced to guitar hot shot Paul Dean – both veterans of several bands on the Canadian scene – at Calgary’s Refinery Night Club.  Along with Reno and Dean, Loverboy still includes original members Doug Johnson on keyboards and Matt Frenette on drums, with Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve replacing the late Scott Smith on bass.

With their trademark red leather pants, bandannas, big rock sound and high-energy live shows, Loverboy has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling GET LUCKY, and a trio of double-Platinum releases in their self-titled 1980 debut, 1983’s KEEP IT UP and 1985’s LOVIN’ EVERY MINUTE OF IT. Their string of hits includes, in addition to the anthem “Working for the Weekend,” such arena rock staples as “Lovin’ Every Minute of It,” “This Could Be the Night,” “Hot Girls in Love,” “The Kid is Hot Tonite,” “Notorious”, “Turn Me Loose,” “When It’s Over,” “Heaven In Your Eyes” and “Queen of the Broken Hearts.” In September of this year, the group was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in Toronto, ON.

About Sammy Hagar:

For more than four decades, Sammy Hagar has been recognized as one of the best and most accomplished lead singers and songwriters in rock music. From breaking into the industry with the seminal hard rock band Montrose, to his multi-platinum solo career, to his ride as the frontman of Van Halen, Chickenfoot and his latest best-selling supergroup, The Circle, Hagar has amassed 25 Platinum albums on sales surpassing 50 million worldwide. Along his journey, he has set the tone for some of the greatest rock anthems ever written with songs like “I Can’t Drive 55,” “Right Now,” and “Why Can’t This Be Love,” and earned the highest respect of the music industry with a Grammy Award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Since opening his flagship Cabo Wabo Cantina in 1990, he’s turned a lifelong passion for great food, music and spirits into a thriving and iconic lifestyle brand encompassing restaurants and spirits. A pioneer in the spirits industry, he launched Cabo Wabo Tequila in 1996 and catapulted it into the #2-selling premium tequila brand in the United States. In 2010, Hagar sold his interests in Cabo Wabo Tequila to Gruppo Campari in a 9-figure deal that’s widely credited as the start of the celebrity-owned spirits trend. He now owns an award-winning portfolio of top-shelf spirits and beer that embody that same spirit of Baja beach life and rock ‘n’ roll. They include Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, a partnership with rock icon Rick Springfield, Santo Spirits, a partnership with tastemaker Guy Fieri, Sammy’s Beach Bar Cocktail Co. and Red Rocker Brewing Co. Never one to hit the brakes, Sammy’s also expanded his successes into publishing, TV, radio and beyond, including five seasons of his hit TV show “Rock & Roll Road Trip with Sammy Hagar” and as host of “Sammy Hagar’s Top Rock Countdown,” a weekly syndicated radio show on 90+ US stations. He’s a #1 NYT bestselling author and his cocktail book, “Sammy Hagar’s Greatest Cocktail Hits,” was awarded the 2023 Independent Publisher Book Awards. He’s also a dedicated philanthropist, donating millions back to local communities through his private non-profit Hagar Family Foundation, and the first Honorary Ambassador to Los Cabos, an honor he was bestowed in 2022 in recognition of his longtime investment in the people and economy of Mexico. Wolfgang Van Halen Names His Two ‘Dream’ Bands to Tour With

Wolfgang Van Halen 's Mammoth WVH has already opened for some legendary groups in the past, but during a recent conversation with Loudwire Nights ' Kevin Vargas, the rocker named his two "dream" bands that he wants to tour with.

Mammoth WVH have played with Guns N' Roses in the past, and they're currently on the road with Alter Bridge . This summer, they'll open for Metallica , as well as Def Leppard and Motley Crue , so it's safe to say that the band will get to perform for some massive audiences throughout the year. But who else is on Van Halen's bucket list to tour with?

"The two dreams — I mean, if Guns N' Roses and Metallica aren't already just the most insane dream coming true — would be AC/DC , because that was like my band with my dad, that was our favorite band. And Foo Fighters , because Dave [Grohl] is like, when it comes to Mammoth, and the way he started Foo Fighters, is my biggest influence for sure," Van Halen said.

"I'm super lucky to be in the position I am, it's very humbling... For my friends, like Mark [Tremonti] , to want us to be touring with them. Or, I met Lars [Ulrich] at the Taylor Hawkins tribute, and then we got a request for our management [for us] to open for Metallica now," he continued. "It's a really insane thing to be a part of, and I'm just thankful. It's an honor to have people see merit in what I do separately, and not because of my name."

Van Halen just released the first single from his second Mammoth WVH album yesterday (March 22) called  "Another Celebration at the End of the World."  The album, titled  Mammoth II,  will be available Aug. 4, and will apparently see the rocker get a little heavier and more adventurous in regards to its sound.

"I think I let some of what I personally enjoy a bit more, like I think I let the heavier influences creep in on this album. It's a bit of a heavier album in comparison [to the first]," Van Halen explained. "And I think I challenged myself vocally and on guitar as well, I think coming into this album with that confidence I was talking about after touring for about two years, I felt ready to kind of challenge myself."

To hear more from the interview with Van Halen, tune into Loudwire Nights tonight at 7PM ET. Pre-order your copy of  Mammoth II  at this location , and get tickets to see the band through this link .

Loudwire Nights airs nightly starting at 7PM ET. You can tune in anytime, from anywhere right  here  or by downloading the  Loudwire app .

The 50 best Van Halen songs - the ultimate American party soundtrack

Eddie Van Halen was a game-changing guitar player, but it was his band's exuberant songs that gave his genius the power to soar - and here are 50 of the best

  • The 50 Best Van Halen Songs: 50-26
  • The 50 Best Van Halen Songs: 25-1

Straight outta Pasadena, Van Halen were America's ultimate party band, monstrously entertaining and gleefully ambitious, a classically Californian quartet formed by two Dutch immigrants. They also happened to revolutionise rock music.

When the band’s debut album was released on February 10, 1978 – on the same day as that other late-70s game changer, Judas Priest 's Stained Class – singer David Lee Roth was typically hyperbolic. “This is the 1980s!” he boasted, keen to show just how far ahead of the pack his band was. “And this is the new sound – it’s hyper, it’s energy, it’s urgent.”

The key to that new sound was the genius of Eddie Van Halen, whose extraordinarily fleet-fingered playing created a template that's still in use today. Allied to his band's thrilling, fuel-injected anthems – and a liberal sprinkling of effervescent covers – Van Halen's songs were the soundtrack to a life lived more loudly.

Here are 50 of the best.

Alt

50. Dance The Night Away

Dance The Night Away was reportedly inspired by Fleetwood Mac ’s Go Your Own Way , and indeed, the song is one of the few pure pop tunes of the Dave Lee Roth era. As such, the emphasis is heavily on the vocals and chorus harmonies (the title refrain was originally ‘ Dance Lolita Dance ’, until Roth was convinced otherwise). Although Eddie’s guitar is uncharacteristically restrained (no solo!), he still contributes some stellar harmonics work and a classic major-chord riff.

49. Best Of Both Worlds

This 5150 track, featuring a wide-open cowboy chord riff that sounds like AC/DC playing Kool & The Gang’s Celebration , is one of the most well-known songs of the Sammy Hagar era. A live version, lifted from the 1986 Live Without A Net home video, was a minor hit on MTV, allowing viewers who couldn’t make it to the show the opportunity to witness Sam, Ed and Mike march in line formation – and Day-Glo trousers – across the concert stage.

48. Top Of The World

Does that opening riff sound a little familiar? That’s because it’s more or less the same one Ed played almost a decade earlier on the fadeout to 1984’s Jump . Legend has it that Eddie didn’t want Top Of The World included on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge , preferring to focus on fresher material. Producer Andy Johns convinced him otherwise, but not before Eddie could pull out another blast from the past – he recorded the song using the ’58 Gibson Flying V he played on another 1984 hit, Hot For Teacher .

47. Poundcake

The massive guitar sound on this track is the result of Eddie overdubbing three rhythm guitar parts: his main six-string, and two tracks of electric 12-string, for which he played a custom model built by English guitar-maker Roger Giffin. Combined with the cascades of guitar harmonics that ring throughout, a white-hot solo spot and an intro played with the assistance of a Makita power drill, Poundcake announced that EVH was still a major guitar force to be reckoned with.

46. Dancing In The Street

Eddie played this song’s riff on a Minimoog synthesizer processed with the same echo effect he used on Cathedral (also from Diver Down ) – “two songs I couldn’t have done without an echo,” he admitted. “The riff was taken from a song of my own that I was in the midst of writing. Ted [Templeman, producer] heard it and said, ‘Hey, let’s use it for Dancing In The Street .’ Maybe if I played it on guitar on the record it would have been better.”

45. She's The Woman

After recording three demo versions – an early self-produced take, one with Gene Simmons in 1976 and another with Ted Templeman in 1977 – Van Halen finally released an official studio version of She’s The Woman on their 2012 album A Different Kind of Truth . Since Eddie had already lifted the original solo section and used it in Mean Street , he wrote a new one that, in addition to the intro’s cool chromatic bass figure, really allowed his son, bassist Wolfgang, to strut his stuff.

44. One Foot Out The Door

Fair Warning ’s closing track was reportedly recorded on the quick, when the band literally had one foot out the door of the studio. Built on an ominous, burbling synth line carried over from the album’s previous track, the instrumental Sunday Afternoon In The Park , the song is a bare-bones rocker that fl ies by in a mere 1:58. Even better, more than half of that time is taken up by a furious EVH solo.

43. Why Can't This Be Love

Released in March 1986 as the first single from 5150 , Why Can’t This Be Love was for most people the first music heard from the Sammy Hagar-led Van Halen. And indeed, the song’s bright, bouncy and downright pop sound, which features Eddie playing an Oberheim OB-8 synth, made it clear that, yeah, they were serious about that keyboard thing. How serious, you ask? When Van Halen performed this song live in the 80s, Eddie would often stick to the keys and leave the guitar rhythms – and solo – to Sammy.

42. Finish What Ya Started

With its twangy finger-picked guitar lines, dry drums and lyrics about unsatisfying sex (dreamt up by Sammy Hagar in a 2am session, after Eddie brought him a riff he’d just written), Finish What Ya Started is easily the most un-Van Halen song in the band’s catalogue. At times it’s near impossible to reconcile the suave, almost countrified infl ections and bright acoustic strumming with the group behind such beefy, all-the-way-to-eleven anthems as Hot For Teacher, Unchained, Panama etc. “Preposterous!” you’ll cry, just as you realise you’ve been humming the chorus for the last week…

Tattoo is based on an early Van Halen tune titled Down In Flames that was slated to appear on Van Halen II . Instead it emerged – with new lyrics, solo and other pieces – 34 years later as the leadoff single from A Different Kind Of Truth . The result is a comfortable and welcome link between Van Halen past and present. And take note of the guitar swells at the song’s coda, which did actually make it onto Van Halen II – as the intro to that album’s You’re No Good .

40. (Oh) Pretty Woman

Eddie came up with the idea to record a cover version of this early 60s Roy Orbison hit when Van Halen’s record label pressured them for a single after the Fair Warning tour. Eddie liked its riff, but much to his chagrin, the song became the band’s biggest hit, despite being one of only two Van Halen songs to that date without a guitar solo. “It shows you how much guitar solos mean to people,” he lamented later.

39. Hang 'Em High

The Warner Bros demo track Last Night had to wait five years before it made the cut for Diver Down , trading its lame lyrics about a suspicious boyfriend for one of Diamond Dave’s obtuse fables of danger and machismo. The reworked track is far more interesting, but Eddie’s solo was almost identical in both versions, right down to the midsolo key change, hammer-on trills and whammy workout.

After hearing the rapid-fire double-stops and massive cascading drums that fill the first full minute of 5150 , you’ll wonder why Van Halen didn’t just carry on as an instrumental trio after the departure of Dave Lee Roth. To his credit, Sammy Hagar squeals his highest note ever on the outro, but Eddie’s solo is a stronger musical statement: a glorious 32-bar showcase of pure six-string skills. Let the man play all the synths he wants; this title track is his gift to his guitar fans.

37. Feel Your Love Tonight

During the 80s countless hair metal pop hits copied this song’s formula verbatim, from Roth’s horny lyrics to the guitar-and-vocals-only breakdown during the choruses. However, none of the imitations equalled this song’s lurid depiction of teenage lust, which was effective for inciting young couples into backseat action. Those of us who came of age during the 70s pity today’s teenagers with their Justin Biebers et al. It’s a wonder anyone gets laid these days.

36. Sinner's Swing

That was spontaneous, a first take,” Eddie said. That in-the-moment intensity is clear on the final product, as is some of the Fair Warning in-studio anxiety. An aggravated groove constantly shoves the song forward. Dave’s urgent vocals suggest a lothario on the prowl, and Ed’s frantic, slightly sloppy solo feels more like a panic attack, with rapid-fire tapping and hammer-ons barely constrained by six high-tension wires.

35. Cathedral

Plenty of guitarists (most notably David Gilmour, The Edge and Albert Lee) had exploited the dotted-eighth-note-echo trick previously, but Eddie gave the effect a new twist by playing his with volume control swells on his guitar. This combined with cavernous reverb, made his guitar sound like an organ. The first of three brief instrumental interludes on Diver Down, Cathedral stands alone as a complete musical piece instead of functioning as an extended song intro.

34. Girl Gone Bad

Dramatic and dynamic, Girl Gone Bad is the closest thing Van Halen ever recorded to a progressive rock epic, with Eddie and Alex interlocking with stunning, nearly psychic precision to create a mammoth wall of sound. Ed’s virtuoso guitar performance is like a condensed encyclopedia of his signature techniques, incorporating chiming harmonics, expansive open-string textures, melodic chord figures, brutal riffs, tremolo picking, tapping, squeals and dive bombs, but his “outside” jazzy flourishes may be the most impressive aspect of his tour de force solo.

33. I'll Wait

Although Jump is the 1984 song commonly credited with igniting the “to-keyboard-or-not-to-keyboard” rift in the VH camp, it was actually I’ll Wait that, as Eddie recounted, David Lee Roth and producer Ted Templeman “didn’t want to touch with a 10-foot pole”. And indeed, whereas Jump is a guitar-based rocker at heart, I’ll Wait is pure synth-pop, with Alex Van Halen on Rototoms and a co-writer credit for ex-Doobie Brother crooner Michael McDonald to boot.

32. When It's Love

The first song written for OU812 – hearing the music in the car en route from the airport, Sammy Hagar wrote the lyrics before they reached the studio – Eddie called this unabashed power ballad “a classic tune” in 1988. “It’s pretty, it’s heavy, it’s melodic, it’s singalong… it’s just a happening song.” Eddie, who always cited Eric Clapton as a major influence, intended this song’s solo as an overt tribute to Slowhand’s style.

31. I’m The One

At its core I’m The One is a hot-rodded blues boogie tune that provided a springboard for Eddie to show off his impressive shredding chops, with a jazz scat vocal harmony interlude thrown in for comic relief. The true inspiration for Joe Satriani ’s Satch Boogie starts here, as Satriani copped everything, from Alex’s thundering double-kick shuffle to Eddie’s ascending triplet runs. Numerous shredders followed suit, but none were able to swing quite like Eddie did here.

30. Where Have All The Good Times Gone?

David Lee Roth once said that Van Halen learned six Kinks songs from a K-Tel greatest-hits album, but this song and You Really Got Me are their only Kinks covers that have surfaced. Considering the dearth of original songs on Diver Down , Van Halen probably should have retitled the song Where Have All Our Good Tunes Gone ! but they still managed to deliver a spirited performance even if their revision of this Kinks classic wasn’t as earth shattering as You Really Got Me .

29. Right Now

Eddie wrote this with Joe Cocker in mind, thinking the band might use guest vocalists after Dave’s departure. It was a massive commercial hit with Sammy instead, using a dramatic piano riff borrowed from Eddie’s soundtrack to the 1984 teen flick The Wild Life . The addition of a Hammond organ-Leslie speaker combo made for a keyboard-heavy anthem that “some people thought was risky,” Eddie said, “but to me, it’s not even stepping out. It’s still a rock tune.”

28. Top Jimmy

During the early 80s David Lee Roth frequented a notorious Hollywood after-hours club/art gallery called Zero Zero, where he commiserated with a bohemian crowd of lowbrow artists, models, underground filmmakers and punk rockers. Here he met rhythm ’n’ booze singer Top Jimmy of Top Jimmy & the Rhythm Pigs, who passed away in 2001 but remains immortal thanks to this song. Ed used a DADACD tuning and played a Ripley stereo guitar with individual strings panned left or right in an alternating fashion.

27. So This Is Love?

"I definitely had a lot of pissed-off energy in me that I got out on Fair Warning,” Eddie admitted. “It does have kind of a dark underlying tone to it.” So why is this tasty piece of ear candy the only Van Halen song that can legitimately be called “jaunty”? Credit Michael Anthony – this strutter positively bounces on the bass line, flowing into a smooth groove that finds the band thoroughly in the moment.

26. Romeo Delight

Some of the rhythm and lyrical elements of this Women And Children First track were lifted from an earlier Van Halen tune, Get The Show On The Road , which appeared on their 1977 Warner Bros. demo. Although the song is a scorching rocker – David Lee Roth himself described it as “powerrock; twice as fast as your hearbeat”, it also features some more subtle ingredients, such asthe incessant ‘heartbeat’ sound heard during the verses and breakdown. Eddie explained: “Mike was picking quietly, and I tapped my strings against the pickup poles.”

Chicano Batman are not who you expect them to be

In the summer of 2017, Chicano Batman played a free show at One Colorado, the shopping complex in the heart of Old Pasadena, as part of KCRW’s Summer Nights concert series. The band had just released “Freedom Is Free,” its third album.

Organizers had anticipated a large turnout for the event and warned fans for a week that they expected to reach capacity early.

The place was packed an hour before the band hit the stage. Fans arriving late, many of them Latino, climbed over and crawled under temporary fences installed for crowd control to try to get in to see the hometown heroes play their signature blend of Latin psychedelic, Chicano old-school soul and Tropicalía.

“That was some Beatles s—,” Eduardo Arenas, the band’s bass player, recalled with a chuckle.

“It was awesome because the power went out on the last song,” added lead vocalist Bardo Martinez over food at Highland Park’s breakfast taco joint HomeState.

“Power outages always make for a moment,” said Arenas.

Arenas and Martinez remember that evening of loosely controlled chaos fondly, but are quick to point out that it was a different era for the band, which recently released the new album “Notebook Fantasy” via indie label ATO Records.

Onstage, the band members have abandoned their matching three-piece ruffled suits — a nod to old-school Latin acts on both sides of the border— in favor of a “wear what you feel” dress policy. The quartet also became a trio; longtime drummer Gabriel Villa left the band after the release of 2020’s “Invisible People.”

Self-isolating with Chicano Batman

Chicano Batman’s new record, “Invisible People,” is coming out during a pandemic. But they aren’t worried.

April 22, 2020

Notably, that experimental album, influenced by krautrockers Can and Nigeria’s William Onyeabor, was the first Chicano Batman album to not feature any songs in Spanish, an artistic decision that puzzled some longtime fans who expected the band to stay loyal to the “Chicano” part of its name.

Arenas sees it differently, arguing that the band was always meant to be an experimental project.

“We’re always trying to see where we can go next,” he said. “This is just part of the natural journey we’re on. I think it’s dope to have a fan base that believes in what we’re doing, and we can’t be the same people for 16 years, you know?”

Even the band’s name, which Martinez says he came up with while enrolled at UCLA in the early 2000s, allowed for interpretation and growth.

“I just put the two names together and thought, ‘Damn, that’s a dope band name,’” he said, adding that he drew inspiration from his own involvement in the school’s MEChA chapter. It was this political awakening that made him realize that there was no one way to be Chicano. “That was the whole point, that the band could be whatever we decided it to be.”

If “Invisible People” was a departure from the familiar, “Notebook Fantasy” is the arrival of what Chicano Batman was always meant to sound like.

Working with producer John Congleton, the band recorded at Sunset Sound, the legendary Hollywood studio used by some of the biggest names in rock history.

The legendary Sunset Sound studios in Hollywood is in trouble. If we care about music — its history and its future — we must take notice.

“We were in the same place where all these big bands — the Doors, Van Halen — recorded their albums,” said Arenas. “We were in the company of legends and the walls were talking to us.”

The ghosts of some of these legends show up in the recordings. The album’s first single, “Fly,” channels Prince — a Sunset Sound alumnus — through its upbeat funk and sexually charged lyrics. The track’s music video is also a visual throwback to the Purple One’s 1979 eponymous sophomore LP, which featured the musician shirtless on the cover.

“Notebook Fantasy” also marks the return of Spanish-language songs on Chicano Batman albums. “Era Primavera” is a slick, springtime ode to Latin America’s pop balladeers of the ‘70s and ‘80s that starts to bloom by the time it hits the chorus. Arenas takes over lead singer duties in “Hojas Secas” and gets self-reflective in this down-tempo track about the end of a relationship. His song of lament is accompanied by Carlos Arévalo’s wailing guitar, and crescendos with a full-on choir.

“We’re not trying to shy away from them,” Arenas said of their Spanish tracks. Rather, they’re just one of their many musical offerings. “It’s like ‘Yo, here’s your coconut chocolate, here’s your almond with sea salt and here’s your Carlos V [Mexican chocolate bar], we got you bro.”

“We were just trying to have fun in the studio, just geeking out on what potential sounds we could make,” said Martinez.

On Friday, Chicano Batman will take its vast musical samplings on tour, kick-starting a run of 32 U.S. cities in Las Vegas and ending with a homecoming show on June 29 at the historic Kia Forum in Inglewood.

“This journey to the Forum, it’s kind of a mammoth journey that involves everyone,” Arenas said before listing several local bands that came up with them and helped Chicano Batman become better musicians, including Brainstory, Chola Orange and Tropa Magica.

The other group that helped propel their journey: the fans, opinions and all.

“Chicano Batman at the Forum is not an individual act,” he added. “It’s a collective, a movement. You don’t play at the Forum without the people’s power, and so I’m thankful for that.”

Bertinelli, 63, spoke to USA TODAY earlier this month and confirmed she is dating after her divorce from Tom Vitale , but didn't name the man in question.

"He was not on my radar," she said. "I was going to die with my six cats and my dog and be incredibly happy doing it. So this came out of left field, and I'm grateful it did. He's very special."

Earlier this month, Goodnough penned a column presumably about the chef and actress amid the press tour for her cookbook, " Indulge ."

"She has been through the absolute ringer… and when it was the hardest and felt the worst and was almost too much, she dug down deep and did hard work. She got to the root of things and waded through hard histories. She ran towards the labor of healing not away from it. She hurt like hell and worked like hell to not hurt," he wrote.

In the column, he repeatedly called Bertinelli "my girlfriend" and referred to himself as "the boyfriend." She reshared the column on her Instagram story with the caption: "I just can't with this man" and crying emojis.
