  • lesk606 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing Waterfalls/Zip Lines Tour Just got back from a long cruise and we booked this amazing excursion through Iguana Mama. The entire experience was incredible and my family had an awesome time. Carlos and Fernando were our guide and driver. From booking the excursion, to picking us up at the port, transportation to and from and the waterfalls/zip lines - everything was smooth and wonderful. Our guides ended up feeling like family by the time we were done. Best experience!! Read more Written April 21, 2024
  • Dadtotwo 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Eat, drink and be merry!!! We have done about 35 cruises and this was one of the best excursions that we’ve been on. They keep the rum flowing the entire time, the scenery was beautiful, the lunch was excellent and the guide (Carlos) was helpful and informative. There was only one other couple on the tour with us so we had lots of attention. Carlos was also very flexible. When he found out that none of us smoked cigars, he substituted a coffee and chocolate tasting instead. He also asked if we wanted to shop and when we didn’t, we skipped that and went on to something more interesting to us. The rum factory was awesome! They were very generous with the samples. We sampled probably 10 different types of rum and had to slow down because we were afraid we would get smashed before lunch! After the tastings they of course wanted you to buy some. The prices were amazingly cheap!!! An 8 year sipping rum was only $15 and we knew it was good since we just sampled it. It is a bit of a hike to exit the cruise port and find the guide, but not hard if you just follow the map that they sent us. The map arrived in the confirmation that we only received a couple of days before the excursion, so make sure that you have some way to receive emails. I HIGHLY recommend and would do this tour again in a heartbeat! Read more Written April 19, 2024

  • melissabJ1830AW 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Family Memories We booked the Eat, Drink & Be Merry tour because the excursions offered by the cruise ship didn't allow us the option of booking a tour exclusive to our family of 5. Once at port in Puerta Plata our wonderful tour guides "Alexander the Great" and "Mad Max" we're waiting for us. They went over the itinerary with us and assured use they were there to make our trip memorable; for us to sit back, relax and leave it to them. And from that moment on they called ahead to our destinations checking wait times and crowds and even adjusted our route so we didn't have to wait in long lines. My family was over the top pleased with this tour and the knowledge that Alexander shared with us about their beautiful island. I can't forget to mention the awesome driving skills of Mad Max and the wonderful lunch at Kaffe Restaurant. Also, Alexander is an awesome photographer and captured so many memories for us. Thank you guys both for an awesome experience. I highly recommend this tour and be sure to request Alexander the Great and Mad Max 😎 Read more Written April 6, 2024

  • jamesgO4494SE 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles 27 Waterfalls at Damajagua - Waterfall Jumping with Iguana Mama Highly recommend Iguana Mama! Great tour. Safe. Book here instead of through Carnival or other cruise lines. It's cheaper this way, you get lunch, rum drinks on the way home, and a better tour. They get you back in PLENTY of time so there is really no concern about that. We had an awesome time in the Dominican Republic at Damajagua waterfalls with Iguana Mama Shore Excursions. They pick you up right outside Amber Cove terminal. It's an easy walk outside to the left. Our family and our friends who were with us on the cruise were the ONLY ones on this private group. They speak perfect English and Spanish, so don't worry about that. It's about a 15 minute drive to the waterfall area. We did bring a backpack but left EVERYTHING in their van including phones and such. With this group, there is NO need to get a locker. Their driver stays with the van. Once you get there, go to the bathroom, then grab a helmet and lifevest. Iguana Mama gives you multiple water bottles. You don't need to bring any for the hike. With this group you wear ANY shoes you want. Carnival makes you rent the little water shoes. We wore tennis shoes, crocs, teva sandals, whatever. When you get there, you can also get a "picture/video" guide. It was about $45 I think. They have a guy that goes and takes videos and pictures of your group the whole time. We got one guy for 2 families. Ended up getting over 120 pictures and videos. Then just leave your phones in the van. Definitely recommend this. They take credit cards there so I didn't have to use cash. The hike was mostly a very good trail with stairs. It was easy for our group but we are in good shape. We could have honestly walked up without stopping. But there are other groups, and the large group stops 2 or 3 times going up. If you are overweight and take the elevator instead of the stairs on the cruise ship, this is probably not for you. We jumped off 12' and 18' waterfalls and also slid down some. I think the Carnival tours don't let you jump. If you don't want to jump, there are some where you can climb down a ladder and then go in the water. Other sections just have rock type, natural slides. The water is a little colder but not bad after walking up and especially if it's hot outside. There are also zip lines in this area. We didn't do that but you can hear them. After walking back from the waterfalls, they have a lunch buffet on site. For Iguana mama, this is INCLUDED. They have local + American food. They also have a bar. Once you are done eating, they drive you back and offer you rum drinks. Great time and definitely recommend it. If you're visiting the Dominican on a cruise or alone, it's a great time. We booked Iguana Mama from Trip advisor, instead of Carnival, but you could use their website as well. We booked this excursion without our cruise because we wanted to be able to jump off the waterfalls & if you book with the cruise they will not allow you to jump! We did this with our two teenage boys & they also had a great time. The ziplining was very cool!! We did end up purchasing a “photographer” for $70 and it was well worth it! We came home with pictures and videos we wouldn’t have had with our own phones! They serve you a fresh lunch after your tour as well & it was delish. Read more Written March 31, 2024

Alexander took many photos for us and they were phenomenal. We got to see so many things, and the entire tour was very interactive, including getting to sample many rums, wines, chocolates etc. We ate at a really beautiful restaurant (Kaffe Restaurant Bistro) that was a home that had been restored. The food was very good, and service was wonderful. Check it out if you are in town. Both Alexander and Alvaro were very accommodating based on our wants and needs. We really had a great time and are so happy we did this tour. As a cruise passenger, they also got us back with plenty of time to spare. Thanks to the Iguanamama team for a great tour. • derekburgan22 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles INCREDIBLE excursion out of Amber Cove. We were looking forward to the waterfall excursion out of Amber Cover (sailed on Princess Cruise Line's Sky Princess.) To say Iguana Mama overdelivered is an understatement. We had an amazing time! We met out driver and main tour guide Raul outside the main gate of Amber cove and it was a relatively quick ride to the Falls with Raul entertaining the whole group while in the air conditioned van. Once at the base camp of the Falls we were given a lifejacket and helmet before our journey up the mountain. The climb up the mountain wasn't too bad at all, especially with multiple rest breaks along the long way. For the zip line experience we were joined by two zip line experts. The five zip lines were fun, with one very long one and another that was a bit faster than the others. Being that high up while zip lining across nature was certainly something else! At our last zip line, we immediately went straight to jumping into the Falls and taking water way down through a series of jumps and rock slides. The water was so refreshing after the climb up the mountain and doing the zip lines! This part of the excursion was a true highlight. I had watched videos online of this experience and it looked awful being in large groups of 100 or more. Our personal group was a total of 6 people and we were joined with another group of about 20. This was totally different than the videos I had watched and was absolutely fantastic. Several large jumps into the water and several fast rock slides as well. Just terrific and our tour guide Raul was 10 stars for this part of the journey. After we walked back to base camp we had a stop at the bar for a Dominican lunch and this was possibly the best included lunch we've had on ANY Caribbean island that we have been to over the years. Another case of over delivering in a major way. Lots of options for the vegetarians/vegans in the group along (including fried eggplant) with tasty meats for everyone else. Sodas were included and this was actually the only day on our 7 day sailing where I got to have Coke Zero (my preferred drink of choice back in the States.) You could also purchase drinks at the bar and I was able to pick up a bottle of Presidente beer. I try to pick up a bottle of local beer at all the islands we go to. EXTREMELY recommended!! Looking forward to going back to Amber Cove in the future and would love to use Iguana Mama again. Read more Written February 18, 2024

Carnival in the Dominican Republic

Dominican Carnival– carnaval dominicano –is the most vibrant celebration of Dominican culture and identity. It’s a time when Dominicans of all ages and from all regions take to the streets, at home or in neighboring carnival cities, to enjoy parades with their families and loved ones.

Every Sunday during the month of February, colorful parades take place in every major city and region around the DR–some extending through the first week of March. La Vega Carnival is the oldest, largest, and most popular of all, followed by Santiago. Other cities hosting unique parades include Santo Domingo, Montecristi, Bonao, Puerto Plata, Río San Juan, and Barahona. Costumes, masks, and mystical characters are distinct to each area and reveal Dominican folkloric traditions and beliefs, as diverse as the country’s population.

The season usually launches with a vibrant indoor carnival gala show held in Santiago and culminates with Independence Day celebrations on February 27. The most colorful event of all is the final National Carnival Parade–held the first Sunday of March in the capital of Santo Domingo, it brings together carnival groups and characters from around the DR for one last, big carnival hurrah along the city’s Malecón waterfront boulevard.

While you can head to any carnival town or city on your own, several tour agencies also organize carnival day trips during the month of February, particularly to La Vega Carnival.

Carnaval Bonao

ORIGIN & HISTORY

Carnival in the Dominican Republic dates back to 1520, during the Spanish colonial times. Some researchers say the first carnival events took place as a celebration of a visit by Fray Bartolomé de las Casas, when inhabitants disguised themselves as Moors and Christians.

Between 1822 and 1844, the tradition of wearing costumes during religious festivities almost disappeared during the Haitian occupation. But it returned immediately when the country achieved its independence on February 27, 1844. Costumes were then no longer associated with religious celebrations, and evolved into actual carnivals, celebrated during the three days prior to Ash Wednesday. February was then established as the month of carnival in the Dominican Republic.

To fully enjoy and understand Dominican carnival, familiarize yourself with the main characters, and their significance in Dominican folklore.

El   Diablo Cojuelo   is carnival’s leading character. This “limping devil” wears a colorful cloaked suit adorned with small mirrors, rattles, ribbons, and cowbells, as a parody of Spanish medieval knights. A mask with large horns covers the devil’s face, as he carries a round whip or  vejiga –made from a cow’s dried and cured inflated bladder–and goes along the parade route surprising distracted onlookers with a lash on their buttocks.

Roba La Gallina ,  or  “the hen robber,” is a man dressed up in an extravagant, layered dress, with large-sized breasts and exaggerated posterior, and carrying an oversized purse. She parades in the streets with an open parasol, stopping at the “ colmados ” or bodegas begging for his chicks–the town’s young people–who follow along behind him in the parade.

Los Lechones  are the city of Santiago’s main carnival character, and are also a form of limping devil. They distinguish themselves with their masks–representing the face of a pig, with a long snout and tall horns–and their elaborate costumes featuring a colorful, beaded romper encrusted with bells and bows. Their role is to maintain order in the streets during festivities, which they attempt by swinging their fouet in the air.

Los Taimáscaros  are Puerto Plata’s main carnival characters. They are a version of the  diablo cojuelo , mixing three cultural influences in their outfits: a mask to represent the Taino gods, blouses and coats representing Spanish heritage, and handkerchiefs that symbolize African deities.

Guloyas  are from San Pedro de Macorís, and their striking beaded costumes and tall feathery hats are impossible to miss. They represent Afro-descendants from neighboring English-speaking Caribbean islands who migrated to the DR in the early 20th century to work in the sugar industry. Their unique African-influenced music and dance was proclaimed a UNESCO Masterpiece of Intangible and Oral Heritage of Humanity in 2005.

Los Pintaos – from Barahona–parade in intricately painted bodies in various colors, from head to toe, with just a piece of cloth covering their nakedness. They represent the Maroons–escaped slaves who took refuge in the southwestern mountains of Bahoruco in the 16th century.

Los Tiznaos ,  also known as  Los Africanos  or the Africans ,  are characters whose faces and bodies are painted black with coal and burned car oil. They portray enslaved Africans, and dance along the streets.

Los Alí Babá  is a group with Oriental themes, known for performing choreographed dancing and drumming.

Carnival in the Dominican Republic

Enjoy one of the most original festivals and with the greatest traditions of the dominican republic..

Carnival in the Dominican Republic

The Carnival is a very rooted tradition for the Dominican people and a true expression of their identity.

The first Carnival celebrations in the island date back to 1520, Colonial time. During the Haitian occupation, the costumes were let apart until again, from 1844 and on, the Dominicans came back to the streets, although without the association of the Carnival to religious festivities, but making it a true festivity which was celebrated three days before Ash Wednesday. This is why the month of February has been since then the month of the Carnival in the Dominican Republic .

Every Sunday of the month, different cities organize their parades. Although beauty is around each of one of these exhibitions, the worldwide known Carnival is the one celebrated in La Vega and, as it was expected, the one organized in the capital, Santo Domingo , usually celebrated between the last Sunday of February and the first of March. In this last one, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture gives awards to the best costume, groups, etc., divided in different categories.

The distinctive about the amazing Dominican Carnival is the influence of different cultures on its evolution. In addition to the undeniable Spanish presence, it counts with a great variety of characters coming from the African cultures or the traditions of other countries, such as the ‘Diablo Cojuelo’, the ‘Califé’ or the ‘Roba la gallina’, among many others which, by the rhythm of the dance and music, blend into and mix up with the colourful parades.

Regarding the crafter and flashy masks, on their beginnings, they followed the traditional technique original from Spain but bit by bit they evolved thanks to the contribution of slaves coming from Africa and the free men whom, with their work, gave the place the famous handicraft tradition of the well known ‘ Careteros ’, the craftsmen who make the Dominican masks. These are elaborated with papier machê, feathers, newspapers, banana leaves, a painted pumpkin, top of little bottles or clothes, among many other recyclable materials which are harmonized and complement in a process made up by sequential steps and which, sometimes, turn to more advanced procedures and materials.

You can also find the ‘ Diablos cojuelos ’ which wear a whip or the ‘vejiga inflada’ with which they flog the peasants to eliminate the negative energies and purify them, in order to let the positive energies flow.

All out, there are different organized tours by some of the agencies to enjoy the Carnivals, discovering the meaning and symbology of the characters, costumes or actions, just as tasting the most customary dishes of the area or even visiting the La Vega caves , from where the ‘Diablos Cojuelos’ come from.

Amber cove shore excursions to the dominican republic.

Amber Cove is located on the Dominican Republic's north coast (Caribbean Sea), just outside of Puerto Plata. Puerto Plata is a historical town discovered by Christopher Columbus. Amber Cove encompasses 30 acres of waterfront property and the port was named "Amber Cove" after the rich amber mineral reserves found in the region.

Damajagua Waterfalls

Experience an eco-adventure like no other. Damajagua, or "27 Charcos" (27 Pools), is a hidden treasure nestled in the rolling hills of the Northern Corridor mountain range. Completely immerse yourself within this tropical rainforest that offers captivating views and some epic waterslides. Or, ditch the waterslides and jump down to get back to basecamp. Just be careful - waterfall jumps can be up to 25 feet high!

Watersports Galore

There are several beaches worth checking out near the cruise terminal, from Playa Dorada to Grande. Get wet and wild with all the watersport activities Amber Cove has to offer. You can rent many different types of equipment, such as stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, hydro-bikes, pedal boats, and solar catamarans. Snorkeling and scuba diving equipment rentals are also available. Prefer to stay dry? Book a deep-sea fishing charter boat instead.

Explore Puerto Plata

Hike your way up or hop on the only cable car to the summit of Mount Isabel de Torres, located in the city of Puerto Plata, and just a quick 20-minute car ride from Amber Cove. The summit is 2,555 feet above sea level and offers prime Puerto Plata sightseeing. Once at the peak, hike the beautiful botanical gardens filled with local flora and caves, or get some photos of the Christ the Redeemer Statue (a smaller version of the one in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Ocean World Adventure Park is located in Puerto Plata too. It's a must-see attraction if you're in the Dominican Republic. Here you can have close encounters with dolphins, sea lions, and sharks that kids will surely enjoy. Adults can keep the fun going at night. With the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop, Ocean World also offers an entertaining nightlife option for grown-ups. There are a ton of things to do inland as well, from cigar factory tours to local marketplace shopping. Again, there is simply too much to list. But that is what makes Amber Cove a great vacation destination. Shore Excursions offers nothing but the best excursions and tours in the Caribbean and beyond! Make the most of your cruise ship experience with us.

Amber Cove on a Cruise: Things to Do, Prices, Map, and More

Headed to the eastern Caribbean on a Carnival or Princess cruise? Chances are that it may include a stop in a port known as Amber Cove.

Amber Cove sign with a ship behind it.

This port — located about six miles west of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic — is a dedicated area for passengers of Carnival Corporation ships. So if you’re sailing a Carnival brand and headed to the area, then this is where you’ll stop.

You can think of Amber Cove much like a private island, only it is still part of the mainland. But here you’ll find all kinds of amenities for cruise passengers, from a pool area to shopping to restaurants. And while it is a jumping off point for seeing Puerto Plata, the truth is that you could spend all day inside the port area if you wanted and have plenty of fun.

So what exactly is there to see, do, and know about Amber Cove? We recently visited to give you all the ins and outs about the spot.

Location & Layout of Amber Cove

Map showing location of cruise ports in Puerto Plata

First things first, it’s nice to get a lay of the land with the port, its location, and what’s around.

Amber Cove sits in a small inlet, about 10-15 minutes by taxi from Puerto Plata. Around the port there is very little, although there is a resort right next door. Apart from that, it’s largely open space with hills and pastures. As a result, if you want to go anywhere outside the port, you’ll need some sort of transportation. Walking outside the port isn’t really feasible.

As for the layout of the port area itself, it’s fairly easy to navigate. First, your ship will dock at the pier, and then it’s a short walk to Amber Cove. You enter through the duty-free store. Once through, straight ahead will be the meeting points for booked shore excursions. To the left are a number of restaurants, shops, and the way to exit the port and grab a taxi. To the right is the “Aqua Zone” that’s complete with a huge pool, waterslide, cabanas, and much more (more on this below).

You can get an idea of the layout via the map below:

What Is There to Do at Amber Cove?

This port area is custom made to entertain cruise passengers. In many ways you can think of it as an extension of the cruise ship. Below we cover all the things to do in port. If you plan to go explore nearby Puerto Plata, then we have a complete guide of things to do here .

carnival excursions dominican republic

Need a souvenir? Or maybe to pick up something from the pharmacy? Or jewelry? Or alcohol? No matter what’s on your shopping list, there will be a store in Amber Cove that sells it. The shopping area takes up one entire side of the port, giving you plenty of options to choose.

Get a Picture in Front of the Ship

As you get off the ship, take a left and then head to the end of the port area. At the far corner of the port is a perfect spot to get a picture in front of your ship. There, you’ll find a large display writing out “AMBER COVE!” with a spot in the middle that shows the ship perfectly. Step up and get a souvenir photo to remember your trip.

Grab Something to Eat

Want to eat? Remember that you can just head the short walk back to the ship and eat for free, or you can grab a bite in port. There are a couple of sit-down restaurants serving casual fare. One is right by the pool and the other at the opposite end of the port near the “AMBER COVE!” sign. There’s also a Nathan’s hot dog trailer by the pool. Just know that unlike some private ports, the food isn’t free here. You’ll have to pay out of pocket.

Enjoy a Drink (or Three)

What would a Caribbean port be without something to drink? There are bar stations around the pool, as well as the large Coco Cana (a restaurant by the pool with a swim-up bar) serving libations. But perhaps the coolest place to have a drink is Sky Bar — a bar sitting on a hill that overlooks the port and offers cool views of the ship and surrounding area.

Hit the Pool

carnival excursions dominican republic

If you’re going to stay in port, then by far the big attraction is the pool area. The pool here is large, with tons of loungers all around. It’s broken into different areas that are connected with bridges so even though it can be busy, it can still make the spots seem more private. The main portion of the pool near the swim-up bar gets pretty lively. Head around from there and you can find a calmer vibe.

Try the Waterslide

carnival excursions dominican republic

One fun feature is a pair of waterslides that circle around near the edge of the pool. The twin slides spin around several times before dumping you into a dedicated splash pool. The entrance can be a little hidden, but it’s along the back of the port area and up a hill. You’ll be able to see the slides from the pool — just head over to figure out where to go. There is a 230 pound weight limit, and you must be at least 4 feet tall to ride.

Sail Across the Port on a Zipline

Head to the pool area, and you’ll likely hear the zipline before you actually see it. The lengthy run heads straight over the entire pool area, letting out a high-pitched whine as people go over. The cost is $28 for unlimited rides while you are in port.

Live it Up in a Cabana

carnival excursions dominican republic

To be sure the port area can get busy. When we visited, two of Carnival’s largest ships were in port, making it crowded. If you want a little more elbow room, then there are cabanas that you rent out. There’s a group of them that sit out over the bay and others that sit overlooking the pool. Rates start at $340 per day and most are in this range, except for the Grand Cabana, which runs a pricey $1,170.

Kids Water Park

carnival excursions dominican republic

Are you sailing with little ones (about five years or younger)? If so, then there is a splash area designed for smaller kids. It features a small slide, a tree that sprays water, and a large fish that kids can climb in. If you have kids that aren’t ready for the pool, it’s a fun spot for them to get wet and enjoy themselves.

Feeling a little more active? If you want to shoot some hoops, there is a basketball area. It’s located at the far end of the port, past the pool and the kid water park. It’s not much — just a hoop and a half-court area, but it’s a fun option if you want to do something other than lounge by the pool.

Kayak/Pedal Boat/Paddleboards

If you want to get out on the water, then there are plenty of rentals to choose from. Cruisers visiting Amber Cove have the option of renting kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats, and more. The fees are a bit steep — starting around $35 per hour — but some of those can be split by multiple people such as the pedal boats that carry four. Half-hour rentals are also available.

Price List for Amber Cove

We’ve mentioned several things to do that come with an extra charge. Below is the pricing from a recent visit to give you an idea of what things cost.

Tips & Things to Know

Before you visit, there are definitely some things to know about the port that will make your trip go smoother.

Taxis are Expensive

carnival excursions dominican republic

Amber Cove sits about six miles away from Puerto Plata. You’d think that getting back and forth would be cheap, but think again. Taxi rates from the port to town are sky-high, costing $70 round trip according to the rates seen posted. With that in mind, it’s likely worth it to book an excursion instead if you want to go to town, which will include transportation.

There’s a Charge for Most Extras in the Pool Area

If you want to spend the day at the pool, access is free, as are loungers. Most other things will cost money. Everything from umbrellas to pool floats to lockers cost extra, as do certain “VIP” areas. You can see a list of the charges in the “Price List” section above.

Drink Packages/Wi-Fi Don’t Work in Port

While Amber Cove might have the vibe of a private cruise line island, it’s actually not. And that means unlike some private islands where drink packages and wi-fi service bought on the ship also extend to the port, it’s not the case here. Instead, if you want to drink then you’ll have to pay bar prices. And wi-fi service is available in the port area for $8 per day.

Free Wi-Fi at Stores

carnival excursions dominican republic

As we just said, the wi-fi from the ship doesn’t work in port. And while you can pay the $8 for all-day access while visiting, there is also a free option. Check out the stores in Amber Cove. You’ll find that some offer free wi-fi access as an incentive for you to visit the shop. It can give you the opportunity to check in back home if you only need the Internet for a short bit.

Check Out the Sky Bar for Great Views

If you want the best view in Amber Cove, then check out a spot called Sky Bar. It sits at the top of a hill that overlooks the port. You can’t miss the large white-roofed structure that’s visible from nearly everywhere. Head up here for a tropical drink and a unique spot to relax while in port.

Be Sure to Bring a Towel From the Ship

Spending the day at the pool? If so, you’ll want to be sure to bring a beach towel from the ship. All cruise ships offer towels to passengers (typically there is a station by the pool). You can bring these into port with you. There are no towels available in the port, so if you forget yours, then you’ll have to air-dry.

Be Early or Be Late to the Pool

Obviously the pool area is a big draw at Amber Cove, and during the peak of the day (between around 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.) it can get pretty crowded if you are in port with large ships. If you are the only ship docked, then it’s not as big a deal. But if there are multiple ships, then it’s smart to arrive early to stake out a prime spot. As well, going later in the afternoon also sees smaller crowds as many head back to the ship despite all aboard not usually being until the evening.

Yes, only cruise passengers and employees are allowed in the Amber Cove port area. You will need to meet up in Puerto Plata.

coming in on cruise, want to go to sosua beach. just two of us. any chance of getting a group together so it will not be so expensive?

You can always ask around, but I’d consider it doubtful. Best bet is to make some friends on the ship before the port of call and then invite them to see if they’d want to go.

It was $60 round trip for us. You can bring the taxis down in price. You can bargain anywhere, never pay full price.

Dominican Republic Carnival 2024 – Dates, History, Facts, Traditions and Best Places to Celebrate

For those who want to decorate their lives with bright colors and enjoy incredible experiences, we recommend taking into account the carnival in the Dominican Republic in February.

Traditionally, Brazil is considered the birthplace of carnivals. Lots of tourists come here just for the impressions of the colorful shows taking place on the streets of the country. But not every traveler knows about the Dominican version of this entertainment.

Dominican Republic Carnival

Dominican Republic Carnival

  • The history of the Dominican Republic Carnival

For the first time, such events were here for a very long time. In the distant and gloomy Middle Ages, processions through the streets of people dressed as Moors were supposed to support the morale of the Spanish conquistadors. Then the Holy Inquisition tried with all its might to strengthen the power of the Catholic conquerors on the island.

From 1822 to 1844, the Dominican Republic was under Haitian occupation, and such events were strictly prohibited. After the war of liberation, the Republic gained state independence and the carnival became a symbol of this event.

Since that memorable time, every year on February 27 , every village or city in the Dominican Republic is colored with all the colors of the rainbow from the unusual and brilliant costumes of its inhabitants.

Almost every family prepares for this event several months in advance, as the costumes and masks for carnival characters are not cheap. Some of the most inventive residents even seek sponsors for such performances, persuading them to invest in the creation of intricate images of street performers.

February Carnival – the main event of the DR

Every year in February, the squares and streets of the cities of the Republic are transformed beyond recognition! It is in the last month of winter that the main cultural event, the carnival, is held in the country.

The holiday unites the entire local population, regardless of social strata. Literally, everyone takes to the streets, becomes participants or spectators of a colorful show.

And no matter how much money is in the bank account or if there is none at all, no matter what for lunch or dinner – the fun picks up with its wave and “carries”, making you enjoy life and the sun.

The Dominican February carnival is often compared to the Brazilian one. Indeed, the scale of both shows is truly gigantic, but the Dominican parade will perhaps be a little “scary” and there is an excuse for this – it is dedicated to the devil. Yes, yes, lame and incredibly intimidating.

According to legend, once upon a time God was angry with the Devil and threw him to the ground. In the fall, the Prince of Darkness could not group and therefore injured his leg. So, he remained diablo cojuelo or lame devil.

  • How Carnival is celebrated in the Dominican Republic

Children and adults take to the streets of cities, put on ugly masks and greet life-size puppets and dancers with cries. Celebrations are held in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and other tourist places. Over time, the traditions of the carnival have changed, mixed with the customs of the Indians and African slaves, who were brought by the same Europeans. Today’s carnival is the Dominican version, which is represented by each province of the country.

Interestingly, in the region of the northern coast, the motives of the Taino Indians prevail in carnival costumes, while in the southeast African costumes are considered traditional. So, moving from one region to another, tourists can see all the beauty and diversity of the main event of the Dominican Republic – the February Festival.

  • Dominican Carnival in Santo Domingo

The February carnival in the capital of the Dominican Republic is an incredibly colorful performance. Local residents choose the most “terrible” devil as their symbol, so the masks and life-size puppets here are notable for their considerable size and rather frightening appearance. Santo Domingo boasts a parade that has remained virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages.

Dominican Carnival in Santo Domingo

Locals say that “if there is no devil at the carnival, you are not in the Dominican Republic.” But besides this character, other folklore heroes also participate in the show. Staged scenes from comparsas make you bend over with laughter. And even without knowing the local language, it is impossible to make a mistake in the subject of the scenes. And there are many of them – from humorous to social and political.

The former Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo shared the procession and did “social carnivals”. For example, for the elite, he opened private clubs with performances by famous dancers, musicians, and actors. But all this ended with the reign of the President, and the Dominican people again turned the carnival into a holiday for everyone.

The parade is a phased action, starting with the qualifying carnivals. Then it all ends with the main procession with the choice of the king and queen of the carnival, the best teams, and the final passage of the winners on the Malecon.

Carnival Parade in Santo Domingo

Carnival Parade in Santo Domingo

The differences of the Santo Domingo carnival

Carnival in Santo Domingo is different from others taking place in 31 provinces of the country. It is also noisy, cheerful, and bright here, but there is the main action – on the first Sunday of March they hold a “view of the devils”. Representatives from all provinces compete on the main city embankment for the prize of the winner of the costume and mask. And this show is definitely not to be missed.

Santo Domingo Carnival time announcement

All is celebrated at the national level, so a few days before the start of the Dominican Carnival, the Ministry of Culture publishes an announcement of the program on the website and indicates the start time.

But even if they write that the marches will start at 10.00, this does not mean that it will be so. Most likely, all the most interesting will begin no earlier than 13.00. Punctuality is not the most popular phenomenon in the Dominican Republic, even at the state level.

For guests from other countries, the Ministry of Culture of the DR publishes an announcement of the Dominican Carnival program on its official website. The published program does not change, detailed information about the holding and interesting features of each stage is laid out.

Performances you can see at Santo Domingo parade

During the parade, only the best scenes, bright creative groups will be shown. They are selected by a special commission. All participants are required to show their submissions, and then patiently wait for permission or refusal. And if tourists have noticed a group rehearsal somewhere, this does not mean that it will participate in the Carnival.

What you will have to spend on at Santo Domingo Carnival

Entertainment and performances, food and drinks – it’s all free. But if travelers want to get closer to the road to see the procession, they will have to bargain with the locals. You can also buy small ladder-stands, boxes, and crates.

Knowing about the popularity of the event, local shopkeepers and merchants prefer to make some money on those who want to see the parade. By the way, the higher the box or ladder is, the farther the viewer will be pushed back.

  • The legendary Dominican carnival in La Vega

The whole city is a huge stage! This is the legendary Dominican carnival in La Vega. Year after year, the parade never ceases to amaze the audience with its scope, beauty, and fun. So many original costumes, music, dances cannot be seen anywhere else. In 2006, UNESCO recognized the La Vega Carnival as the best and most magnificent in the whole world. La Vega has become the “heart” of the parade and therefore is considered one of the brightest in the country.

Dominican carnival in La Vega

Dominican carnival in La Vega

Distinctive features of the La Vega Carnival

  • In La Vega, they choose their own Carnival Queen, who in 99% of cases wins the competition in the capital. Hundreds of applicants participate in the selection and try to make their costumes, dances and songs the best. They also choose a children’s Queen, as well as the “Chief Devil”.
  • On weekdays, preparatory processions take place in the city. Participants show their talents, demonstrate bright costumes, and then the best ones go to a special exhibition. It will be organized at the end of the La Vega Carnival.
  • It is worth seeing all the parades of the Queens, the Devils, and the final “Procession of the Devils”. This passage is also called “the procession of the Lame Devils” and, perhaps, the costume show will be even more colorful than all the queens put together.
  • Another obligatory item of the holiday is the shops of folk craftsmen. Prices for goods are not the lowest, but the products are of the highest quality. Local craftsmen offer a variety of goods, including souvenirs, crafts for the home, amazingly beautiful accessories, and useful gizmos.

To see all the fascinating things of the La Vega Carnival, you need to go to Pabellon bajo techo Fernando Terue. This indoor venue is the venue for concerts and the choice of the Queen. Processions are held on the streets of Padre Adolfo and Parque de las Flores.

  • February Carnival in Punta Cana

The resort region cannot boast of metropolitan scope, but the February Carnival in Punta Cana is an event that cannot be missed. Thanks to some “compactness”, the fun here is even more stormy, bright and literally, not knowing the shores in the good sense of the word.

The highlight of the carnival in Punta Cana

Dominican carnival in Punta Cana is the place to see the unique costumes of African tribes. The fact is that this region was inhabited by people from the African continent, who have preserved traditions to this day. Therefore, one should not be surprised at such an unusual color of the local Carnival. It is better to surrender to the riot of fun and fully enjoy the local dances, songs, interesting stories, and costumed scenes.

Carnival in Punta Cana

Carnival in Punta Cana

Time frame for the Punta Cana carnival

The festival in Punta Cana is a bright event in the life of local residents and guests. They prepare for it long before the start of the holiday. There are no special changes in the plan of events:

  • Beginning on the first Sunday of February

The history of the Dominican Carnival begins in the distant 1520. The tradition was brought by Christopher Columbus and “appointed” the carnival as a time before Lent, that is, “gave the opportunity” for Europeans to have fun, and only then begin a long Lent with its restrictions.
