Paramount has ushered in a new era of Star Trek. Following the conclusion of Star Trek: Discovery , the studio ordered multiple new series and began developing the TV movie Star Trek: Chapter 31 , which will star Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh. Given its revitalization, now is the perfect time to delve into the franchise. This guide will demonstrate where and how to watch every Star Trek movie and TV show in order.

The Star Trek franchise began in 1966 with the premiere of Star Trek , also known as Star Trek: The Original Series. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the sci-fi series follows Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and First Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy) as they guide the Enterprise on a mission of intergalactic space exploration. While the show received poor ratings during its three-season run, broadcast syndication and reruns breathed new life into the franchise, garnering it a cult following after its 1969 cancelation.

Following the show’s re-evaluation, Roddenberry convinced Paramount to continue the original series on the big screen with Star Trek: The Motion Picture . Although it wasn’t a huge box-office hit, it did well enough to earn five more sequels, for which Roddenberry was a consultant.

As Star Trek: The Original Series remained one of the most popular syndicated TV shows years after its release, Paramount and Gene Roddenberry began working on another live-action series: Star Trek: The Next Generation . The series takes place aboard a new Enterprise one century after the events of the original series, with Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) at the helm. Along with his crew, Captain Picard carries on his predecessors' mission of exploring new worlds.

Star Trek: The Next Generation also continued on the big screen after its conclusion, receiving four feature films. While films like Star Trek: First Contact were well-received, Star Trek: Nemesis was a critical and financial failure. The failure of Star Trek: Nemesis was followed by another blow as the prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled amid low ratings.

Paramount switched directions on the big screen and released what many consider a “reboot” trilogy. However, the films aren’t an official reboot as they merely explore an alternate timeline known as the Kelvin Timeline and see Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto take over as Captain Kirk and Spock, respectively.

While the Kelvin Timeline film series played out, Star Trek went on a hiatus on the small screen. After a 12-year break, Paramount revived the franchise, aiming to create Star Trek shows specifically for its streaming service, CBS All Access (now Paramount+). In 2017, it released Star Trek: Discovery, followed by a new round of shows, including Star Trek: Picard , which continued Captain Picard’s story after Star Trek: The Next Generation.

There are no signs of the franchise slowing down, with the first TV movie, Star Trek: Chapter 31, on the way and Paramount showing interest in further Star Trek TV films, theatrical films, and shows.

How to watch the Star Trek franchise in order

Viewers can watch the Star Trek franchise either by release date order or chronologically. Those hoping to watch chronologically should know that the Kelvin Timeline trilogy takes place outside of the timeline of the other shows and movies, so they can technically be watched at any point. Star Trek: Short Treks also does not fit in the chronological order as it is an anthology series. Additionally, viewers may have to jump between shows occasionally due to time jumps in series like Star Trek: Discovery.

Once in enemy territory, the captain and his crew make a startling discovery: Shinzon is human, a slave from the Romulan sister planet of Remus, and has a secret, shocking relationship to Picard himself.

Star Trek is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry that follows the adventures of the starship USS Enterprise and its crew. 1985's Enemy Mine is getting a remake. The Wolfgang Petersen movie was the director's first project after helming 1981's Das Boot and 1984's The NeverEnding Story . A co-production between the U.S., the U.K, and West Germany, the sci-fi movie starred Dennis Quaid as human astronaut Willis Davidge, who becomes stranded on a planet with Jeriba Shigan (Louis Gossett Jr.), a fighter from a reptilian enemy race known as the Drac. While fighting for their survival, they form an unlikely bond.

Per The Hollywood Reporter , a remake of Enemy Mine is in the works at 20th Century Studios . The screenplay is set to be written by Terry Matalas, the showrunner of the final season of Star Trek: Picard . Matalas' other writing experience is primarily in television, on small screen projects including Nikita and MacGyver as well as other sci-fi titles such as Star Trek: Enterprise , Terra Nova , and 12 Monkeys . He is not currently attached to direct, however, as no director has been formally announced.

Enemy Mine Could Be Ripe For A Remake

The movie was a commercial & critical failure.

If the Enemy Mine remake becomes a hit, it also comes with a ready-built franchise with plenty of room for expansion.

Enemy Mine had a rough production history. The sci-fi movie was initially set to be directed by Wimbledon ’s Richard Loncraine, but clashes with producers led to him being removed from the project after just one week. When it was finally released, though it was popular in the Soviet Union, it was a commercial failure, only earning $12.3 million despite costing $40 million between its production budget and marketing expenses. At the time of writing, it also has a lukewarm Rotten Tomatoes score of 59%. However, there are many factors that make it ripe for a remake.

A $40 million price tag likely meant that Enemy Mine would have needed to make $80 million in order to break even.

Enemy Mine not being a huge hit could be a good thing for the remake. While its cult following gives the movie name recognition, it has a foundation that can still be improved on without the baggage that comes with remaking a universally beloved property. The themes of overcoming bigotry and working together can also be worked into a story that is moving and relevant for modern audiences. The fact that those tie in so well with the overall themes of the Star Trek franchise could also mean that Matalas is a great fit for the project.

While some sci-fi remakes can fall short of the original, others can enhance and even improve upon their forerunners. These are the best examples.

If the Enemy Mine remake becomes a hit, it also comes with a ready-built franchise with plenty of room for expansion. The original movie was based on the 1979 novella of the same name by Barry B. Longyear. Because Longyear wrote two sequels in what was later called the Enemy Papers trilogy , there is a road map for where possible sequels could go. It remains to be seen if the remake is ever produced, let alone if it becomes a hit, but there is a good chance that it could become a force to be reckoned with down the road.

Weintraub noted with surprise that Paramount has seemingly not brought Matalas back for another Star Trek series (despite fan support for his proposed Star Trek: Legacy ), letting Marvel pick him up to showrun their upcoming Vision Quest series. Howard agreed that the latter studio had correctly recognized Matalas' talent.

After making small appearances in a number of Ron Howard's films, including Parenthood , Apollo 13 , and A Beautiful Mind , Howard landed her first lead role in M. Howard has a family connection to the Star Trek universe — but it's not through her dad. Her uncle, Clint Howard , first appeared in the long-running franchise in the 1966 The Original Series episode "The Corbomite Maneuver," when he was seven years old, as the alien Balok. He has since made a number of appearances on a variety of Star Trek series, including a homeless man in 21st-century San Francisco on Deep Space Nine , a Ferengi on Enterprise , an Orion on Discovery , and medical officer Buck Martinez in Strange New Worlds .

Star Trek: The Picard Maneuver, Explained

Jean-Luc Picard already had a storied career when audiences were first introduced to him during the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation . "Encounter at Farpoint" presents him as the experienced and confident captain of the USS Enterprise-D welcoming aboard his new Number One, Will Riker. It was intended to portray him as a more seasoned officer than James T. Kirk, which explained keeping him on the bridge while Riker led the dangerous away-team missions. The specifics of Picard's career before taking command of the Federation flagship have been sketched out in the franchise, but are limited more to single incidents than lengthy tenures.

Those incidents include a signature move known as the "Picard Maneuver," which he undertook as an act of desperation some nine years before the events of The Next Generation began. It helped cement his reputation as one of the best captains in the fleet, and even became part of the curriculum at Starfleet Academy. It was covered in a single first-season episode of The Next Generation, though the events of Star Trek: Picard reference it over thirty years later. More than the maneuver itself, the detail reveals just how much Picard accomplished before becoming captain of the Enterprise.

Picard Captained Another Ship During the Picard Maneuver

Star Trek: The Next Generation has became as iconic as The Original Series, but one fan-favorite character wasn't done justice throughout the series.

Picard takes command of the Enterprise-D in 2363, a few months before the pilot "Encounter at Farpoint" launches The Next Generation era in 2364. Before that, Picard served as captain of the USS Stargazer , a decidedly less flashy vessel that nonetheless left a deep and lasting impression on the captain. The Stargazer was a Constellation class, notable largely because it possesses four warp nacelles instead of the usual two found on most Starfleet ships. The configuration allows the ship to travel at warp speed for extended periods of time by switching between nacelle pairs, giving it a great deal of range and making it excellent for missions along the edges of Federation space.

It's also an older class of vessel that was commissioned in the late 2200s during the Original Series era , and seeing service for another century. That's reflected in its only onscreen appearance -- Season 1, Episode 9, "The Battle" -- which resembles the blockier ship designs of the Original Series era in contrast to the newer, sleeker Enterprise-D. It helps give the ship some distinction, as well as implying that Picard rose through the ranks by serving on less prestigious vessels before taking command of the Enterprise.

Picard originally served on the Stargazer at the helm, though canon has yet to state exactly when his tenure there began or what rank he held at the time. In 2333, the captain was killed in an unspecified incident, and he was forced to take command. Starfleet was so impressed with his performance that they promoted him to captain on the spot, making him one of the youngest people ever to attain the position. Picard commanded the Stargazer for 22 years, including combat duty during the Federation-Cardassian Wars from 2347-2366 . The vessel was permanently damaged in 2355 in an unprovoked attack by a Ferengi ship. Picard and much of the crew survived, however, thanks to use of the Picard Maneuver.

All three seasons of Star Trek: Picard brought back classic characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation, but which episodes are the series' best?

Nothing defined the vessel -- or its captain -- so well as its final mission, which is when Picard executed his maneuver. It was cruising at warp 2 when it came under attack by an unknown vessel, later identified as Ferengi . The enemy hit the Stargazer solidly with weapons fire, which hobbled the vessel and allowed the Ferengi to press the attack. With shields failing and the ship on the brink of destruction, Picard turned to an act of desperation borne from his early days as a helmsman. He engaged the warp drive at top speed for a split second, then dropped out directly beside the Ferengi vessel .

For a moment, the ship appeared to be in two places at once, which confused the Ferengi and caused them to continue firing on the more distant (nonexistent) "Stargazer." The real Stargazer unleashed all of its weapons and destroyed the distracted Ferengi ship directly off of the enemy starboard . The Stargazer was on fire and failing, and the crew was forced to abandon it. They spent weeks in escape pods before they were rescued, but casualties were minimal, and the incident became another feather in Picard's cap. "The Battle" reveals the details of the Picard Maneuver as part of an elaborate plan for revenge by the father of the Ferengi captain who attacked the Stargazer.

He contacts the Enterprise, claiming to have discovered the hulk of Picard's old ship and offering to turn it over to Starfleet as a gesture of good will. He then uses a device called a "thought maker" to induce Picard to mentally relive the battle. He beams over to the Stargazer and is prepared to repeat the Picard Maneuver, this time with the Enterprise as the target. Data devises a means to determine which of the seeming duplicate vessels is the real one, then immobilizes it with a tractor beam. Riker convinces Picard to destroy the thought maker, and the captain returns to normal. The Stargazer is sent to the fleet museum on Athan Prime, where it is eventually joined by a restoration of the Enterprise-D. It can be seen again briefly in Picard Season 3, Episode 6, "The Bounty."

The Picard Maneuver Informs Picard's Legacy in Unusual Ways

Having established those details, The Next Generation more or less let them be for the remainder of its run, with Picard's new adventures aboard the Enterprise leaving the Stargazer in the past. Picard, however, has picked up on both the ship and the maneuver more than once, as a much older title character grapples with his legacy. That includes the Stargazer as much as the Enterprise, notably in Season 1, Episode 10, "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2," in which La Sirena faces down a huge fleet of Romulan vessels . The crew turns to Picard for a way out of the dilemma, and Agnes suggests that if he succeeds, they'll call whatever he comes up with "the Picard Maneuver" before realizing that it already exists . She then compounds the error by claiming that the original maneuver involved the Enterprise, when it was actually the Stargazer.

That brings a lot of nuance to Picard's background without needing to go into a lot of detail. His 22 years on the older ship shaped Picard even more than his time on the Enterprise did . Indeed, he was only captain of the Enterprise-D for eight years (since it was destroyed in 2371 during the events of Star Trek: Generations ), followed by the Enterprise-E for an unknown period of time, ending no later than 2381 when he was promoted to Admiral. He captained the Stargazer for a longer period of time than both of the other two ships put together, and often expressed an affection for it that he didn't feel for either version of the Enterprise. The most telling moment comes in The Next Generation Season 6, Episode 4, "Relics." As Montgomery Scott reminisces about his beloved Enterprise ( The Original Series -era model), Picard shares his thoughts on the Stargazer:

"It was an overworked, under-powered vessel, always on the verge of flying apart at the seams. In every measurable sense, my Enterprise is far superior. But there are times when I would give almost anything to command the Stargazer again."

Picard addresses that by mentioning the Maneuver, and more specifically by Agnes' mistaken assumption that he did so on the Enterprise. Of course, everyone in-universe would attribute any notable success he had to his time on the Federation's flagship , as would fans who have seen plenty of his adventures on the Enterprise, but almost none on the Stargazer. Picard's correction indicates the affection he still holds for the older ship, and the fact that the vast majority of his time as a Starfleet captain took place on it. The Next Generation used the Picard Maneuver as a bit of world-building, and to demonstrate its captain's unseen experiences in command. Picard understands its title character well enough to know which vessel he prefers, and by extension why it's so important to him that he credit it, and not the Enterprise, with his famous Maneuver.
