Road to Zanzibar

My Intrepid Travel tour was exceptional and amazing. My tour guides really went out of their way to teach us about how the locals lived and their day to day lives. I'd highly recommend considering them for your trip. Erellah was my tour leader and was very energetic and enthusiastic.

Tanzania to Zanzibar: White Sands & the Wilderness

I had the time of my life during this trip. I got to travel with the lovliest group anyone could ever wish for and both our guides (Geralt at the Safari as well as Dulla in Sansibar) were absolute legends. Would recommend this trip to anyone who's thinking about a trip of this kind. I felt soooo amazingly taken care of and would immediately book with G Adventures/Tourradar again!

I can't even describe how special and amazing this tour was. Pete and Francis (our guides) are truly what made the trip so amazing. They were both so kind, thoughtful and caring. It felt like a family away from home. Yes, the tour itself was extraordinary. The sites, sounds, tastes etc. Amazing. However, it is the people that make this tour and these people will always mean. The world to myself and my husband. If you go on this tour request these guides! You won't regret it!

Tanzania zanzibar holiday / vacation reviews.

The Intrepid travel Road to Zanzibar was absolutely fantastic. The organisation of the whole trip was very good. I would highly recommend.
Amazing experience. An incredible safari seeing so many animals with a very knowledgeable guide, then after exploring the beauty of Zanzibar. Very good tour leaders and a great bunch of travellers. Memories that will last a lifetime
Not long back from this tour and I had a great time so I thought I'd let others know. Overall, the tour was well organised and the guides ensured we felt safe at all times. The truck was well equipped and I was surprised at how comfortable the seats were - so comfortable I was able to sleep despite the 'African massages' along the way. Despite the fact that some of the journeys were quite long, being able to sleep certainly helped. Some of the journeys on this trip are quite long but they are unavoidable if you want to see these parts of Africa. Anyway, the route was quite scenic and the guides provided info about the surrounding area along the way and we stopped every so often to stretch our legs. The main guide, Sammy, also informed us when to stock up on snacks and drinks at the better supermarkets as a lot of the local shops were poorly supplied as you can imagine. Most of the stops had some form of toilet however my group found that the bush toilets were generally cleaner (this is Africa after all). The tents provided were pretty good and the mattresses were spot on too. I have to say, one of the things I was anxious about before going on the trip was the quality of the meals as catering for large groups often leads to small portions of massively overdone food but both Sam and Ali were great cooks and we always had plenty to eat. We also stopped at local kitchens to try some of the local cuisine for lunch which was another good experience. Our particular group had lots of allergies/food intolerances (seafood, nuts, dairy, gluten and shellfish to name a few) and Sam always provided options for these people - to the extent that one person had to reject his meals so they could use up some of their own food to create some room in their suitcase. Finally, our guide Sammy was excellent along the way and his local knowledge was invaluable for us between helping getting currency changed to recommending where to buy gifts etc. One of the more negative reviews says to do this trip on your own steam which seems like a very romantic idea but without being able to speak the local language (Sam can speak 8 apparently) and knowing how to deal with the corrupt policemen you will only end up wishing you had someone like Sam guiding you. Bad point(s0: When I was at Lake Malawi the lake was quite rough so snorkelling wasn't going to be worthwhile but I guess it's just one of those things and Acacia can't exactly control the weather Highlights of the trip: South Luangwa - we were fortunate to get VERY close to a pair of lions in heat The Serengeti - seeing The Great Wildebeest Migration was spectacular Would recommend.

10 days Tanzania safari and Zanzibar

10 days in Tanzania and Zanzibar. Sounds like heaven, and it is. Lucky visitors to this part of Africa will get the best of both worlds with an incredible safari in Tanzania exploring the Big 5 wildlife in their natural habitat overlooking the incredible Serengeti plains.

After almost a week soaking up the incredible sights and sounds of the Tanzania savannah and elephants you’ll encounter, what better way to chill out than some quality beach time in the paradise that is the beaches of Zanzibar.

Table of Contents

The best 10 days Tanzania safari and Zanzibar Tours

Price of a 10 day tanzania safari and zanzibar trip.

A 10 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar tour starts at about $2,800 per person. Mid-range lodge tours start at $3,800 per person whilst luxury tours start at around $5,000 per person. There are many factors determining the price of a 10 days Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach combo trip.

Safari combo packages to Zanzibar and Tanzania span a wide price range, influenced by several variables. The biggest factor determining the price of a safari is the level of accommodation. This will ultimately categorize tours as being budget, mid-range or luxury. Shared tours are usually cheaper than private tours.

This is especially the case for single travelers. On a 10 day trip you might want to consider a fly-in safari, but these are considerably more expensive than road safaris. Check out the seasons too; low-season prices can be favorable and while you’ll probably get some rain at this time, it’s when the scenery is at its best.

Safari essentials and information

Is 10 days safari in tanzania and zanzibar sufficient.

10 days is plenty of time to see and experience the thrills of a Tanzania safari in the Serengeti, whilst leaving enough time to explore the beaches, sights and smells of the historic Stone Town in Zanzibar.

The number of days required to effectively complete a combined safari and beach combo trip can range from anywhere between 1-2 weeks, depending on the visitor’s time and budget.

Each day consists of an early morning game drive and a late afternoon game drive, certainly sufficient time to view the big 5 and incredible scenery. In Tanzania, a safari here is like nowhere else in the world, with a reputation for prime game viewing, the surreal Serengeti plains, luxury lodges, stunning beaches and of course, the famous Mount Kilimanjaro, visitors will be delighted with their trip here.

Accommodation offered on a 10 days Zanzibar Tanzania safari?

After a long day surveying the incredible Zanzibar and Tanzania landscapes and wildlife on offer, guests can look forward to the very best safari accommodation Africa has to offer. The accommodation offered on safari and beach combination trips is excellent with numerous options from tented camps, luxury lodges to camping grounds.

From camping in the bush with amenities to mid-range and luxury lodges, there’s something for everyone here. Guests can also go fishing, walking or hot-air ballooning before enjoying an outdoor bath and sundowners and dinner in the bush.

Must do on a 10 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar trip

The most popular option for a 10 days Tanzania safari is the world renowned Serengeti National Park . A popular honeymoon destination and documentary location in northern Tanzania, the Serengeti plains are home to the world’s largest movement of animals including the Big 5, often called the “Great Migration.”

It’s also one of the oldest and most scientifically significant ecosystems on the planet. Its weather patterns, fauna and flora are believed to have changed very little over a million years, giving the area a prehistoric feel.

The landscape of the Serengeti Plain is also extremely varied, ranging from savannah, to hilly woodlands, to open grasslands. Apart from rhinos and hunting dogs, visitors will readily see every species of African savanna mammal within the Serengeti.

Whilst in Zanzibar, a trip to one of their famous beaches is of course essential! Pamunda Island is a small island off the beaten track is a haven for stunning sandy beaches, turquoise waters and small coves, perfect for beach walks and water based activities.

Whilst the capital of Zanzibar is Stone Town, a historic old part of the capital of Zanzibar and melting pot of Indian, European, Arab and Swahili cultures. Stone Town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a rich and storied past, perfect for visitors to wander around.

Animals on a Tanzania safari?

You’ll find just about everything in the Tanzania safari! The country is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) and visitors will also find spotted hyenas and hippos.

Tanzania contains the highest concentration of lions in the world with over 3,000 of them found in the Serengeti alone and about 1.5 million wildebeests, in addition to wildebeest, gazelle, giraffes, black rhinos. A view of these huge wildebeest crossing the crocodile infested river Mara has been included in the 7 wonders of natural Africa.

If you enjoy driving, it is possible to visit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater on a 5 day road safari. This combination gives you a reasonable chance of seeing all the Big Five in a short time. Ngorongoro is the only reliable park in Tanzania to see black rhino in the wild.

The Serengeti and the crater are both good for predators, and lions are particularly easy to find in both. A 5 day trip to Ruaha or Selous in the south can also be very productive where you’ll see lions, wild dogs, antelopes and kudu.

How much money do I need for a 10 day Zanzibar Tanzania safari?

Visitors should budget for approximately $320 for a Zanzibar Tanzania safari per person per day, including food and accommodation. Combination safaris in Zanzibar and Tanzania can be more expensive due to the higher costs of accommodation, transport and food.

What animals will I see on a 10 day Tanzania Zanzibar safari tour?

Visitors on a 10 day Tanzania Zanzibar combination safari will see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo), hyenas, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetah, zebras, endangered black rhinos, hippos, crocodiles and much more.

What is the best time to go on a 10 day Tanzania tour?

The best time to go on a 10 day Tanzania safari is from June to October when there’s practically no rain and daytime temperatures are not too hot. With an overall moderate climate, Zanzibar and Tanzania however are considered a great year-round safari and beach destination.

Zanzibar excursions: what to do?

12 October 2017

The tropical island of Zanzibar is known for its beautiful white sandy beaches and coral reefs. But Zanzibar does not only offer laid-back beach life and watersport activities but also a colorful culture and history. The old Stone Town is amazing mix of cultures . Food lovers and culture enthusiasts can visit interesting cultural places like Sultan’s Palace, the House of Wonders and Darajani or Forodhani food markets. You can go on a Spice Tour or explore the amazing coral reefs and swim among tropical reef fish. The opportunities are endless. We selected for you 4 great excursions to do when visiting Zanzibar.

Nakupenda beach

Nakupenda Beach is a large sandbank in the middle of the ocean. This untouched ‘island’ is only 20 minutes away from Stone Town. Take a boat trip to the beautiful white sand beach with crystal clear water and tropical views. A great place to relax, sunbathe, swim, snorkel and enjoy the underwater world. If you are lucky you can even see dolphins. A lot of operators also offer a delicious sea food lunch on the beach.

Cheetah’s Rock

Cheetah’s Rock is an unique rescue centre for wild animals. Here you can learn and interact with wildlife in a natural setting. The lady who runs the centre has a tremendous passion for wildlife and dedicated her life to protect these wild animals. All animals are well taken care of, live in large spaces where they are able to exercise and are not sedated by tranquillizers. If you love animals and like to have a up close and personal encounter with a cheetah, lion, hyena, bush baby or dik dik, this is the place to visit. Although a visit is pricey, the tour is well worth it.

Watch the humpback whale

Zanzibar is a true paradise for divers and snorkelers and the perfect spot for humpback whale watching. The migrating whales arrive in the waters around Zanzibar in late July and you can see them till November in this area. Humpback whales are easily distinguished from any other whale by their nodules and long flippers. These giants can be up to 55 metres in length. If you plan to go to Zanzibar during this time of the year, we definitely recommend you to go on a whale watching trip. If you are lucky you can even spot them while you are swimming or scuba diving.

Sea turtles also nest around Zanzibar and are often see by divers, as well as several species of dolphins. The fortunate scuba divers may even spot a whale shark or manta ray.

Discover the mangrove forests on a paddleboard

Explore the mangrove forest by SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard). If you love nature, water and exciting adventures, this excursion may be something for you. Mangrove forests only grow in tropical areas near the equator and coastlines. It is an special sighting to see those dense knots of roots, appearing to be trees floating above the water. The mangroves are also a great place to spot all kind of birds and fish.

Feed the giant tortoise at Prison Island

Prison Island is a deserted island that lies about half-hour by boat from Zanzibar Island. It was once used as a place where slaves were detained. Later it became a quarantine station for people with deadly diseases. Nowadays a lot of people go to Prison Island to relax and enjoy the peacefulness and lovely white beach. It is ideal for snorkeling, swimming or sunbathing. You can see the old prison ruins and about hundred giant land tortoises that were imported from Seychelles in the 19 th century. These turtles are one of the largest in the world and are walking free in the natural reserve where you can feed them.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration.

People who visit Tanzania are practically inducted into a secret society, a hidden land where lions and elephants roam free, where the ocean is clear and refreshing, and where you have the chance to indulge in all of Tanzania’s majesty. Luckily for you, you don’t even have to keep it a secret.

Customizable Itinerary

Arusha – relax and refresh in luxury.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport and be transferred to your lush accommodation in Arusha, snuggled into the beautiful undulations of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak, and situated next to the serene Lake Duluti, the village resembles a colonial coffee farm with reception made of pristine stone, and the immaculate interior captures the romantic idealism of the decadent colonial past. Merlot carpet stretches the halls and the dining room is decorated with the fragile colors of unused china. The air is fresh and smells of damp wood and freshwater. Settle into your comfortable room. Take a deep breath. The not-so-secret beauty of Tanzania has already begun to be revealed.

What's Included:

Kilimanjaro National Park – Splendor on Safari

Wake up to your first day in Tanzania with a large smile; watch the mist rise off the lake and disappear into the cool morning air. Taste the delectable fruit that crowds the breakfast table waiting to be eaten; the pineapples are juicy and the bananas are rich and ripe. After breakfast transfer to your incredible lodge, where Kilimanjaro towers over the flatlands in the distance. The site boasts luxury fit for royalty with accommodation spaced far enough away from one another to give a feeling of absolute solitude once the sun has set. The stars glisten and the Milky Way swirls in the deep dark night.

Your accommodation opens to the vast space where the natural world lives harmoniously with time. Pull up a chair on the sundeck and look over the semi-arid terrain that expands before you. Know that the feeling that tingles from your toes up your spine is Kambi ya Tembo, and that feeling of being accepted into the secret society that is Tanzania becomes a reality for all those who visit.

Kilimanjaro National Park – Open the Doors to the World

The early hours of the day bring the crisp wind of dawn as you venture into the wilderness for a morning game drive. The sun rises gracefully over the horizon. The colors absorb the distance and burn away the night. The light slowly glows over the landscape until reaching you, the world illuminated as far as the eye can see. The cool morning air is refreshing. The crisp smell of dawn still lingers in the sunlight. You’re wide-awake from the morning breeze and excitement, ready to scour the area for wildlife.

The plains come alive in the mornings, the rambunctious sounds of animals moving through the vast landscapes, from acacia trees to open plains, mountains to swamps. This area is one of the greatest sites in Tanzania to see elephants. Often roaming between the swamps of Amboseli National Park and the acacia woodlands in search of water, when the incredible mass of the elephants wander through the plains, the herd looming large amongst the tiny blades of grass, the known world shrinks until all that exists are the elephants grazing in the plain. You secretly watch them, knowing that in that instant you are in a secret society, a private moment all on your own.

Kilimanjaro National Park – Unravel the Secrets of Nature and Natives

The sun ascends colorfully over the open plain. The new secret world rises with the dawn and you rise with it, eager and capable, settling in quickly with your gorgeous, natural surroundings. The morning game drive has you venturing out into the wild, wandering the golden landscape in search of the varieties of antelope and the animals that predate them. Venturing into Sinya, a private reserve, closes you into the semi-arid park due to the surreal surroundings. Mountains line the boarders of Sinya with views of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Oldoinyo Orok (a mountain that points into the sky like an arrow), and Oldoinyo Lengai (East Africa’s only active volcano). When the breeze rolls through the plain it’s as is if it has blown from the tip of Kilimanjaro, fresh, crisp, cool, and completely freeing.

Return to camp and prepare for the different experience of visiting a traditiotAnal Maasai village. In the face of globalization, technology, land grabs, and tourism the Maasai people hold strong to their age-old traditions and are proud of their heritage. The bright purple and reds of the men’s clothing drape their bodies keeping them cool in the heat and warm in the cold. Cows roam around the bomas , the gated village area, and are still considered a source of wealth amongst the Maasai community. Some of the men and women stretch their earlobes with corks made from wood, tusk, stone, or even thorns. Men build the bomas and watch over the cattle; women build the huts and watch over the children. Drums pulse in the sky, guttural sounds emanate from a line of men, and while some sing to the beat, others jump into the air challenging one another as to who can jump the highest. Don’t hesitate to literally jump in. Dance to the music, join in the laughter, and enjoy the differences of this new world that you find yourself in.

Tarangire National Park – Open the Door to Lake Burunge

Watch the sunrise from the cocoon of your sheets. The night’s depth dissipates as the golden sun emerges from behind the horizon. Birds chirp in the distance. The aroma of rich African coffee reaches into your bed and prepares you for the amazing day ahead. After breakfast you will transfer to your tented camp located on the outskirts of Tarangire National Park. Reception is plush with polished wood floors and a traditional thatched roof. Arrive in time for a beautiful lunch that will have you relaxed and rested before heading into the wild for an afternoon game drive.

Explore the camp's surroundings on an afternoon game drive. Giraffes linger in the trees, their long necks stretched high into the branches scouring for leaves with their tongues. The combination of light and dark brown spots merges the giraffes with the tree bark. Elephants meander through the trees oftentimes stripping bark and marking their path for later journeys. The wind sweeps through the trees and the earthy smell of fallen leaves and bark fills the vehicle. The sun overtakes the horizon as it sets and you see it all from the kopje , a hill that overlooks the lake and showcases the beauty of dusk.

Tarangire National Park – Venture into Tarangire’s Secrets

Wake up to the morning mist rolling along Lake Burunge. The fresh scent of wet grass rises from the ground. Take the morning to relax. Enjoy a change of scenery with a canoe ride on the lake.  Paddle out onto the lake with your guide and wade through the collection of water lilies. Cape buffalo huddle around the lake’s shore and gulp the water. Their horns bud from their heads and oftentimes resemble braids. They watch as you float by at a comfortable distance, their curious stares following your drifting canoe.

An afternoon game drive takes you into the hidden treasures of Tarangire National Park. The large plain is speckled with acacia trees that fill the park with a sweet smell. Cheetahs loiter in the yellow brush lazily awaiting the cool dusk. Their gold and black spotted fur blends effortlessly into the grass. Their tails swish in the warm air. Black streaks stretch down their faces; markings that locals often refer to as tears. When feeling threatened, the cheetah will stand as large as it can, face its aggressor, and slam down its paws while growling as loud as it can, dirt flying into the air while a thunderous warning echoes through the sky. The sound resounds until the sun begins to set and you make your way back to Lake Burunge settling in with a soothing cup of hot chocolate as the verandah’s fireplace warms the night.

Tarangire National Park – Experience Wildlife and Tribal Life

Venture back into Tarangire National Park to experience all that the wild has to offer. Journey through the brush and find the zebras grooming one another. Two zebras position themselves back to front, nibbling each other’s fur while also keeping an eye out for lions, leopards, and other predators. The black of their stripes pop against their white frame. When in a herd, their intense pattern can blend, hypnotize, and confuse lions, and possibly people as well.

Take the opportunity to meet the area’s Datoga tribe. They were once affiliated with Nilotes (peoples associated with the Nile River), and although they find themselves separated from other tribes, their language remains similar and evolved from other Nilotic languages. From a distance their clothing blends into the oxidized soil; however, once you come closer you see the detail of their beadwork and the features of the women’s patched leather dresses. They are similar to the Maasai in their culture, but where the Maasia still retain a sense of nomadic ritual, often following the cattle, the Datoga no longer drift with the seasons. As they open up to you showing their culture and heritage, you know it is another secret that Tanzania has offered you; another experience that is unique to you that no one else could ever have.

Ngorongoro Crater – The Secret World on the Crater Floor

Depart early and make your way to the ever-lush Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which contains the exceptional Ngorongoro Crater, considered one of the best sites in Tanzania to embark on a game drive. Enter the crater by descending from the crater’s rim. The moist mid-morning air fades to a dryer, warmer climate as you make your way to the vivacious crater floor. Black rhino graze the green grass close to Lake Makat. Their pointed beaks help pull at the roots and cut twigs at a perfect ninety-degree angle. While White rhino are known to be territorial, Black rhino prefer to roam, which makes them incredibly elusive. However, in Ngorongoro Crater, Black rhino tend to wander around their preferred spots, chomping away, while beautiful white egrets peck at the bugs that pour from the ground as the rhinos uproot the grass.

In the late afternoon, you will be taken to a luxurious safari lodge. Carved out of strong stone and built into the crater’s ridge, Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is full of stone passages and decks that overlook the entire crater. Watch the nightly mist roll in from the comforts of your personal rock-enclosed balcony or from the warmth of the fire located in the lodge’s center.

Ngorongoro Crater – The Secrets of Bushwalking

Head to Empakaai Crater with a picnic lunch and the excitement of another adventure. Settle onto the rim and peer at the incredibly clear water below. The lake shimmers with a crisp blue in the center, outlined in vibrant pink. The water’s pink hue comes from the reflection of the flamingos that stand on the lake’s shore scouring for tiny fish that will vitalize their feathers’ sheen. Their dark pink legs dip into the water. The water mirrors the flock making the number of birds double and the size of the crater grows in the illusion. The outlying volcanoes of Keremasi and Oldonyo Lengai are visible from Empakaii. Although Keremasi is inactive, watch Oldonyo Lengai and look for the smoke that often rises from the volcano’s rim, mixing with the clouds. Take the trail from the crater’s rim down to the shore of Lake Empakaai. Trees crowd the walkway, which smells of rich timber. Brush the branches aside and enjoy the brisk walk. Once at the shore, keep your eyes open for bushbuck, a large shaggy antelope decorated with white stripes that resemble war paint. They litter the shore and fill themselves up with refreshment before plunging back into the bush.

Serengeti National Park – The Secret Origins of Life

On your way to the Serengeti you will stop at Olduvai Gorge, where the oldest human remains ever discovered were found. The museum blends in with the arid surroundings, its green roof sometimes the only color that lets people know it is a building and not another open space amongst the gorge. The museum is full of fossils found in and around Olduvai, including an abundance of footprints fossilized in volcano ash, and even remains that date back 1.75 million years. The air at Olduvai is often dry and warm as you wander through the area not quite deep enough to be considered a canyon. However, rivers have carved several layers into the gorge, which is apparent in the coloration of Olduvai’s rim; the closer to the gorge’s floor, the lighter the earth, while the higher up the rim, the more oxidized the terrain, which causes a rusty-red coloration.

Continue on to your incredible accommodation in the Serengeti,  the closest you can come to the open space of the great outdoors while still enjoying incredible luxuries. The lodge is set in the open plains of the Serengeti, a place where wildlife roams unimpeded. Notice the amount of impala that trot along the open grass, their golden fur blending in with the field. Their tails point downward while they graze, a black streak highlighted by the surrounding gold and white fur, and complemented by similar black streaks that run down an impala’s back legs. The guttural grunt of the lone male impala echoes in the sunset as it calls for a mate. The smell of roasted vegetables fills the campsite. As you eventually drift off to sleep, listen for the quiet brush of footsteps from elephants or hyenas that wander through the camp.

Serengeti National Park – Uncover the Secrets of the Serengeti

The Serengeti is Tanzania’s most famous national park and game reserve; known not only known for its depiction in The Lion King but also for it’s incredible beauty. Notable for its endless plains, even if the beauty of the Serengeti is not a secret, let the world of these eternal plains open to you. Pack a picnic lunch in order to spend as much time wandering through the bush as possible, searching for jackal, lions, buffalo, serval, storks, cranes, and so much more.

Depart for one of your Serengeti adventures after a delicious and full breakfast. The smell of hot chocolate disappears as you make your way into the plains. The cool morning, before the sun rises high and hot into the air, is one of the best times to see cats meandering through the field. Servals are considered medium-sized cats, resembling a miniature cheetah with large, pointed ears. Although they are nocturnal, oftentimes you can see them skulking in the brush, their normal activity disrupted by the presence of lions or leopards. In the cooler morning, they can still be seen roaming in the grass close to the road, lifting their paws excessively high if the ground is wet from recent rain. The smell of wet grass lifts off the road. The serval lingers, their body was hidden in the bush’s color, their head barely higher than the grass. As it struts back into the brush you take one last look at the yellow fur, the black dots, the large, pointed ears, before it disappears in the gilded brush.

Serengeti National Park– The Mysterious Big Five

Wake up early to the sounds of elephants walking through the grass, grazing on the vegetation and making their way to the closest watering hole. Follow the elephants’ lead by waking up and dining on a spectacular breakfast as your lodge fills with the scent of frying meat and eggs. Jump into the vehicle and continue your adventurous game drive, full of adrenaline in the search for the Big Five. Known as the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa, the Big Five refers to lions, leopards, Cape buffalo, rhinoceros, and elephants.

These animals all call the Serengeti their home and many are easy to discover grazing on the side of the road, while others tend to be more elusive. Your guide is a wealth of knowledge during any game drive, able to name the variety of animals that bask in the sunlight, along with those that hide from the sun by diving into any shaded area they can find. Various species of birds, such as the Crowned crane, spread their impressive wingspan and shallowly soar through the air, gliding along the breeze to find a new space to graze. Look to the canopy of the sparse trees, branches spreading out and reaching into the sky, the bark often a faded brown mixed with dark spots. Leopards hang along these branches, their paws or tails drooping from the branch, dangling in the shade. Often times the leopard’s pendulous appendage is what gives its position away. The sweet smell of acacia drifts through the Serengeti. The soft whoop of the Crowned crane surrounds the vehicle. The excitement of the leopard spotting fills the vehicle as you make your way back to the lodge, the secret of the leopard’s home fresh in your mind.

Arusha – The Secret Flavors of Arusha

Your journey through the endless plains comes to an end after breakfast but gives way to your journey over the vast fields. Transfer to Seronera Airstrip for your flight from the Serengeti plains to Arusha. Lift high over the Serengeti where you might be able to uncover the secret of where the plains actually come to an end. The sky is void of clouds. The amber grass of the plains sparkles in the midmorning sun. Elephants can be seen grazing along the water’s edge but look more like mice as you lift higher into the air and wave goodbye to the golden waves.

Arrive in Arusha and be taken back to your hotel from the beginning of your trip. Settle into the familiar luxuries. Enjoy sunset along the lake. The lake ripples from the life underneath the water and shines in the sunlight. Tonight, make your way to one of the incredible restaurants that Arusha offers and uncover the delicate and delicious flavors of Tanzania. If you don’t want to ask the locals their favorite restaurant in the area, try The Station. Boasting a mixture of traditional Tanzanian fare, along with rich coffee and luscious wine, their samosas are flakey, buttery and delectable, while their stew is hardy with subtle spice and meat that melts in your mouth.

Zanzibar – Welcome to Zanzibar

Wake up to the incredible breakfast buffet and have your fill of your favorites, from sausage and bacon to pineapple and oranges. After breakfast, you will be taken to the Arusha airport for your flight to Zanzibar. Wave goodbye to Arusha and the adventurous game drives, the unbelievable wildlife that you experienced, and the unparalleled secretes of Tanzania’s beauty. The flight to Zanzibar is swift and elegant.

Once on the ground in Zanzibar you will be picked up and transferred to a gorgeous resort located on the north shore of the island. The salty scent of the ocean sits on the sweet breeze. The pool is pearl blue and reflects the thatched roof of reception. The restaurant overlooks the Indian Ocean as it laps against the shore. The water looks cool and clear, the sand white beneath the water’s surface. The sky shifts to deep orange and dark red as the sun sets over Zanzibar. Enjoy a tasty glass of wine or a sweet pineapple Fanta as the sun fades, the sky darkens and the soft sound of the ocean rises from beneath your feet.

Zanzibar – Unraveling the Secrets of Zanzibar

Zanzibar is an eclectic island filled with the beauty of lush forests, opulent beaches, historical sites, and the ability to encourage its visitors to sit and be happy doing absolutely nothing. Whether it is more adventure, more animals, some culture, or some relaxation Zanzibar contains every possible luxury wrapped up in its 2,650 square kilometers.  The adventurous life can be a bit taxing. Why not spend the day relaxing? Feel the soft grainy sand beneath your feet. Indulge in the lavish spa set in the hotel’s tropical gardens. After coming face to face with elephants, leopards, lions, and more, take a day off to receive a soothing massage, revitalize with the smell of coconut oil emanating from your skin and opening up your lungs; your body rejuvenating, your mind settling. Spend the latter part of your day on a sunset cruise, drifting along the crisp water as the breeze carries the boat around the northern part of the island. The sunset fades and turns the horizon into a source of gold. Once the boat anchors you know that the ride is over but the secrets of Tanzania continue.

Zanzibar – The History and Mystery of Zanzibar

Fed and rejuvenated, today is a great day to step out of the seclusion of the beach and into the rich history of Stone Town, a place where remnants of the past are mixed and utilized in the present. A journey through Stone Town is a journey through the essence of Zanzibar. The architecture is consistent with the island’s Arabic history, full of thin alleys, ornate doors, and beautifully carved windows. Alleyways wind through the center of the city to the point of confusion, with a labyrinth of shops, hidden restaurants, hotels, and homes. It is a maze that the locals know, that visitors lose themselves in, and that residents are happy to help you find your way out of. The market place is a relic; remains of the original market from the 19th century are still in use and incredibly popular.

An early morning visit to the fish market brings the vibrant noise of the daily fish auction, fisherman, and stall owners arguing over the price of the morning’s catch. The pungent scent of fresh seafood mixes with the passionate sounds of the local men. The mystery of Stone Town continues hidden in the history of what is now a church. The area originally housed Zanzibar’s slave market, where traders would showcase and auction their slaves. Slavery in Zanzibar was ended in 1873 due to the threat of force from the British. Stone Town is filled with friendly people, gorgeous architecture, delicious food, and a complicated past that makes the city more colorful and the island an unforgettable secret to know.

Zanzibar – Explore the Secret Forest

A Journey to the Jozani Natural Forest Reserve will bring you deep into the dense forest of Zanzibar. Located in the central-east region of the island, it is home to an array of tree-dwelling wildlife and vibrant flora. Your incredibly informative guide will have you knowing the names of the pink flowers blossoming from tree trunks, and pointing out Red Colobus monkeys that live within the canopy. The monkeys’ howl moves through the trees. The smell of misty leaves is heavy under the canopy. The Red Colobus monkey’s bright white stomach and black arms stand out against its dark red back. They somehow resemble an old man with spiked hair. They can be seen grooming one another in the branches, flying from tree to tree, or even examining visitors from close range, wondering what kind of weird animal this non-furry, two-legged, creature is before them.

As darkness settles over the forest, rangers urge all visitors out of the park so that they can close the gates before dark. The Jozani Forest is the last area known to house the Zanzibar leopard, which was, and in some communities is, thought to be extinct. However, the local people believe that sorcerers keep this animal as their pet, making the leopard appear and disappear like a spirit. Whether the legend is true or not, the rangers would rather not take any chances.

Dar es Salaam – The Secret Riches of Dar es Salaam

Indulge in your final breakfast in Zanzibar before heading to the airport for your transfer to Dar es Salaam. Dar is much more than Tanzania’s largest, and richest city. Water wraps around part of the city making ferries as much of a likely transport to the city center as cars, or buses. The streets are crowded with color from the local women, their clothes sporting bright blues and rich reds.

Pay a visit to the National Museum; formerly the King George V Museum, now a fantastic place to engage in and learn about a broad range of African culture and heritage. You will even have the opportunity to meet actual Makonde Carvers. Known for impressive woodcarvings that imitate their everyday lives, Makonde carvers dig into the wood to create faces, renderings of ancient spirits, wildlife, or even a collection of peoples that wind in and out of one another to make a polished wooden spiral of connected individuals. Their art is impressive, rich in history, inspiring, and carries the light sent of crisp wood everywhere it goes. After a long day of exploration, you can settle into the wonders of your hotel. Look through the window and watch the ferries float to and fro as the drifting sun sets the water ablaze until night rolls in.

Dar es Salaam – The Secret Society of Tanzania

In your last moments before departing Dar es Salaam it is hard not be reminded of the decadent memories that you have collected along your journey, the memories that people will find hard to believe are true; memories that you would never have believed if they were being told by someone else. This is the secret society of Tanzania, the unbelievable becomes believable because you have seen it with your own eyes and heard it with your own ears. It is the only price of induction, that ineffable experience. As the plane’s engine roars, don’t forget to welcome yourself into the secret society, if you can even believe it yourself.

Detailed Description

Open the doors to the secret society of Tanzania on this 20-day excursion. The marvels of Tanzania are best revealed during the dry season of Tanzania’s winter months; however, the wet summer season still offers the intangible beauty that Tanzania presents to all those willing to venture into its depths. You will depart from your lush accommodation in Arusha and venture into the wild to see why those who have traveled through Tanzania feel such a connection to one another, to the land, and to the animals that roam through.

Travel to Kambi ya Tembo, a luxurious tented camp located near Tarangire National Park, for a three-day excursion through the area. The river here makes the land and wildlife thrive year-round. The scent of fresh running water fills the trees as Cape buffalo and lions linger along the riverbanks drinking at the water’s edge. Kilimanjaro looms over the plains; its snowcapped peak presents like  a cloud in the tranquil air. Whether canoeing in Lake Burunge or game driving through Tarangire National Park, you will watch the mysteries of Tanzania open up in front of your eyes.

Journeying to Ngorongoro Crater brings you into the lush stone carved accommodations of the Serena Ngorongoro Lodge, along with the active wildlife at the bottom of the crater. Clouds hover over the crater during the evening, leaving in the morning, and offering lush landscapes year-round. Escape to the less traversed Empakaai Crater where the lake sits on the crater floor and mirrors its surrounding trees before you depart for the unparalleled game drives of the Serengeti, where you will sleep among the vast plains while the world of the wildlife continuously revolves.

The latter part of your trip takes you to the relaxing and vibrant beauty of Zanzibar, where every and any option is available, from the history of the island’s spice trade, to a relaxing spa treatment that will revitalize your sense of adventure and urge you to dip your toes into the sea and snorkel around the lively coral reef. Unforgettable Africa does not sit quietly in your line of sight waiting for you to pay attention; it whispers in your ear and makes sure that you’re listening. Listen to its beauty. Listen to its history. Listen to its culture. Be let in on the secret.

1-Day Safari From Zanzibar - Compare 52 Tours

Zanzibar is both a fabulous destination in its own right and a launchpad for so many safari possibilities over on the Tanzanian mainland. Having only 1 day means that the choices of where you can go will be limited, but having 1 day to spend on safari is always better than having no days at all. The best thing about a 1-day safari of this kind is waking up one morning in Zanzibar, surrounded by the swaying palm trees of the Indian Ocean coastline, and knowing that you might be seeing some incredible animals before you go to bed again. It will be quite a busy day and will involve a lot of traveling. But the rewards should be worth every minute and every dollar spent.

5 Questions About 1-Day Safaris From Zanzibar

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

excursion zanzibar tanzanie

What parks are typically visited on a 1-day trip from Zanzibar?

“With only 1 day to spend on safari, the most important thing is to try and get to the safari park as quickly as possible. This means you should really look at those packages that offer a direct flight from Zanzibar to the park in question (rather than requiring an additional flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam). This probably means that Tanzania’s Northern safari circuit will be off-limits for a day trip from Zanzibar. You’re more likely to find tours that go directly into Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) or Mikumi National Park. Even where there aren’t direct flights, the traveling time is likely to be much shorter than to most other parks on the Tanzanian mainland. Another popular possibility could be coastal Saadani National Park, although the wildlife is not quite as good as in some other Tanzanian parks.”

Is Mikumi or Nyerere (Selous) better for a 1-day safari from Zanzibar?

“Either Mikumi or Nyerere (Selous) would be an excellent choice for a 1-day safari from Zanzibar. Both have incredible wildlife possibilities, although each offers a slightly different safari experience. Mikumi is a first-rate safari experience and ranks high on my list of best Tanzanian parks for wilderness. It can sometimes even feel like a smaller version of the Serengeti, especially out on the Mkata Floodplain. And when it comes to wildlife, there’s a good chance you can see big cats, as well as elephant, giraffe, buffalo and hippo. Nyerere is also excellent, with big cats, buffalo, elephant and so much more. What Nyerere can offer that other parks can’t is the mighty Rufiji, one of Africa’s great rivers. A boat safari is a real highlight of visiting here, both for the scenery and the wildlife you might see.”

Is 1 day enough for a trip from Zanzibar?

“One day on safari is never enough, and that is particularly the case when it comes to a day trip from Zanzibar. That’s because you’ll need to factor in your travel time to get to the safari park in question, which means flying from Zanzibar to the mainland (and hopefully directly into an airstrip in the park you’ll be visiting). Another downside of only having 1 day for your safari is that you’ll spend the best time of the day traveling, rather than looking for animals. The early morning and late afternoon, when the light is best and animals are at their most active and easiest to see, would be better spent out on safari, rather than flying to get there. Despite all of this, if you only have 1 day to be on safari, then it’s sure to be a good day. In fact, I can think of no way I’d rather spend a day than going on safari. Would more time be ideal? Of course. But any time you can spend on a Tanzanian safari will be time well spent.”

Are all 1-day safaris from Zanzibar fly-in safaris?

“The only way to make a 1-day safari from Zanzibar work is to fly into the destination you’ll be visiting. Zanzibar is an island, which means you have no choice but to fly. And because you only have 1 day, you really should make the most of your time by flying directly into the national park you want to see (rather than changing planes along the way). If, for example, you decide to fly to Nyerere, the main airstrip for the park is only a very short drive from the main eastern gate into the park. This means that you will be on safari almost as soon as you get off the plane. And while you may spend a large part of your day flying to and from the mainland, just remember that the views you get to enjoy along the way could end up being a real highlight of your trip.”

How much does a 1-day trip from Zanzibar cost?

“There are lots of different tours and packages to consider when planning your day trip from Zanzibar, and prices will vary from one operator to the next. As a general rule, however, finding a cheap or affordable 1-day safari from Zanzibar will be a challenge. Because flying is so expensive, and you’ll need to fly there and back in a single day, you can expect to pay at least US$500 per person, although you could end up paying quite a lot more. There is a little less variation involved in 1-day safaris than there is for longer, multiday safaris. That’s because all of your costs (including two air transfers) will be condensed into a single day. The main cost variables will be whether you’re traveling on a group or private safari and whether you’re traveling in low or high season.”
