Taylor Swift fans given ‘urgent warning’ as £1m lost in ticket scams

Lloyds Bank says more than 600 of its customers have been tricked by fraudsters so far

A rise in fraud cases involving Taylor Swift fans desperate to buy tickets to her sold-out UK shows has prompted Lloyds Bank to issue an “ urgent warning ” after more than 600 of its customers were scammed.

With the superstar due to arrive in Europe next month , the high street bank said its data suggested that UK fans had lost more than ÂŁ1m to fraudsters so far.

Swift is doing 15 huge shows in Great Britain, made up of eight nights at Wembley Stadium in London, plus three apiece in Liverpool and Edinburgh and one in Cardiff.

The run of shows, which starts in Edinburgh on 7 June, will involve her performing in front of almost 1.2 million people. However, demand for tickets massively outstripped supply when they went on sale last year, prompting many disappointed fans to hunt for them online and on social media. That has created the ideal conditions for scammers to target people with a range of online cons.

Lloyds said an analysis of scam reports made by its customers found there had been a rise in fraud cases involving people attempting to buy tickets for the star’s Eras Tour.

It added that since tickets went on sale last summer, more than 600 customers had come forward to report being scammed, which it said was “significantly more than for any other music artist”.

The average amount lost by each victim was ÂŁ332, though in some cases it was more than ÂŁ1,000.

As these figures are based solely on Lloyds Bank’s own customer data, it estimated that across the UK there are likely to have been at least 3,000 victims since tickets went on sale, suggesting more than £1m has been lost to fraudsters so far.

Lloyds said Taylor Swift ticket scams were “flooding” social media, and added that more than 90% of the reported cases started with fake adverts or posts on Facebook, although Facebook Marketplace says the purchase and sale of concert tickets is allowed.

“With all UK dates now sold out, many more fans are likely to fall victim to ticket scams in the coming weeks and months, both leading up to the tour and once the concerts begin in June,” said a spokesperson for the bank.

after newsletter promotion

Purchase scams involve someone being tricked into sending money via bank transfer to buy concert tickets or other items that do not exist.

Liz Ziegler, the bank’s fraud prevention director, said: “Cruel fraudsters have wasted no time in targeting [Swift’s] most loyal fans as they rush to pick up tickets for her must-see concerts.”

She added: “Buying directly from reputable, authorised platforms is the only way to guarantee you’re paying for a genuine ticket
If you’re being asked to pay by bank transfer, particularly from a seller you’ve found on social media, that should immediately set alarm bells ringing.”

In the UK, the ticketing companies AXS and Ticketmaster run official Taylor Swift ticket resale services, and probably the best advice for would-be buyers is to regularly check these in the coming days and weeks, as there will be people who booked but are now unable to attend because of a holiday, illness or change of circumstances.

A third wrote: "I’m like actually devastated, is Taylor for real not coming to Canada?? Like would she actually skip it? I’m so confused. She was just here for tiff, why wouldn’t she include Canada as international."

Swifties take Ticketmaster to court

After Ticketmaster botched online sales for the megastar’s most recent tour, Taylor Swift fans took to court in Los Angeles to take the ticketing behemoth to task.

Swifties from all around the country have filed a complaint against Ticketmaster and parent firm Live Nation for engaging in “unlawful conduct” during the pop star’s disorganized tour sale.

The plaintiffs allege, among other things, that the major ticket seller broke antitrust rules.

Class action status was reviewed at the recent status hearing; although the defense does not plan to request a class action, they sought to retain the opportunity to do so, according to CNN .

Highest grossing tour

Taylor Swift has had successful grossing tours throughout her career.

Her Red Tour grossed $150million, becoming the highest-grossing tour by a country artist in history.

The 1989 Tour became Swift’s highest grossing at $250million and most attended tour at the time.

Swift’s Reputation tour in 2018, grossed a record of $266.1million, but The Eras Tour has the potential to surpass this feat at over $1.6billion.

Taylor did not go to college

Taylor did not go to New York University.

In fact, she did not even attend university and admitted during her acceptance speech that she left high school at tenth grade.

She explained: “I went to public high school until tenth grade and then finished my education doing homeschool work on the floor of airport terminals.”

She added how she “never got to have a normal college experience per se” but encouraged her fellow graduates to work hard.

She also said, “Effortlessness is a myth.”

More of Taylor’s speech at NYU

Taylor told grads : “Learn to live alongside cringe. No matter how hard you try to avoid being cringe, you will look back on your life and cringe retrospectively.”

She added: “I know it can be really overwhelming figuring out who to be, and when. Who you are now and how to act in order to get where you want to go.

“I have some good news: it’s totally up to you.

“I also have some terrifying news: it’s totally up to you.”

Taylor received an honorary doctorate

The  Shake It Off  singer received an honorary doctorate of fine arts on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.

Adoring fans and supporters of the icon screamed as the now Dr Swift blew kisses as she collected her degree in the Yankee Stadium in New York .

Donning her purple robe, Swift told the crowd: “I’m 90% sure the main reason I’m here is because I have a song called 22.”

She added: “Never be ashamed of trying. Effortlessness is a myth.”

Fan talks about experience with security man at concert

“I was just dancing, and this security guard was just crazy, yelling at us,” she explained to the Daily Mail .

“He didn’t want us to take photos in front of the stage. He was being very strict.”

Kelly added: “Every time he passed us we had to stand back because we were worried he would kick us out.”

“He had been like that all night, he was really annoyed,” she said.

“I know Taylor Swift — she wants people to come to her shows and have fun. I wasn’t doing anything outrageous, I wasn’t trying to get to the other side of the barrier.”

Fan harassed at concert by Taylor’s security

Taylor stopped her performance of “Bad Blood” on Saturday in order to settle a dispute on the stage.

The singer called the security man out by name and yelled at him to “stop” when he saw that he was shouting at Kelly.

“She’s fine! She wasn’t doing anything!” she yelled during the performance.

The video taken from different angles has been making rounds on social media since Sunday and has since gone viral.

Taylor defends fan at concert and gives her free tickets to show

A fan who was “harassed” by security at Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour performance in Philadelphia received complimentary tickets.

The fan, known as Kelly Inglis Kelly, told the Daily Mail that the singer had given her a free ticket to the performance on that day.

Ticketmaster broke records with Taylor Swift presale

Over 2million tickets were sold on Ticketmaster for Taylor’s shows in the US on November 15 – the most tickets ever sold for an artist in a single day, according to Ticketmaster.

Ticketmaster said in a statement at the time: “Every ticket was sold to a buyer with a Verified Fan code.

“90 percent fewer tickets are currently posted for resale on secondary markets than a typical on sale, which is exactly why the artist team wanted to use Verified Fan to sell their tickets.

“Ticketmaster is not currently reselling any Taylor tickets.”

US Eras Tour openers

Nine different guest acts play with Taylor Swift on her tour.

The openers include:

  • Beabadoobee
  • Phoebe Bridgers
  • Girl in Red
  • Gracie Abrams

The international leg of the tour will have Sabrina Carpenter as opening act.

Midnights was released on Kim K’s birthday

The October 21st  release date of the Midnights album  also fell upon  Kim Kardashian's 42nd  birthday.

While fans suggested the pop singer attempted to steal the spotlight from Kim’s special day, they also claimed  her new song , Vigilante S**t, took jabs at the reality star and her ex-husband,  Kanye West , 44.

Her lyrics might have been about being “thick as thieves” with the ex-wife of a nemesis and reportedly giving the two “cold hard proof.”

Taylor explains her Midnights album

In an  Instagram  post,  Taylor explained : “I think of Midnights as a complete concept album, with those 13 songs forming a full picture of the intensities of that mystifying mad hour.

“However! There were other songs we wrote on our journey to find that magic 13. I’m calling them 3am tracks.”

She closed the self-described “very chaotic” surprise: “So it’s 3am, and I’m giving them to you now.”

The 3am tracks are additional songs, showing the creative process of Midnights and are all available to stream online for free.

Important change to Taylor Swift 'Eras Tour' ticket rules announced

There's not long to go!

With not long to go until Taylor Swift brings her epic 'Eras Tour' to the UK, Ticketmaster has announced an important change to the rules for ticket holders. Initially, fans who bought their tickets via Ticketmaster were informed that the shows would be 'lead booker' events - which meant that the person who paid for the tickets would need to be present at the event.

Although this was put in place to try and avoid touts reselling tickets for significantly higher prices than face value, this also meant that those who'd been purchased a ticket as a gift may not be able to enter unless the card holder was also there too.

However, in great news for fans, Ticketmaster has now confirmed that there will no longer be a lead booker policy in place for the 'Eras Tour' shows. In an email sent out to ticket buyers, the company said: 'We’re reaching out in case you were not already aware, to remind you that the terms and conditions relating to Taylor Swift The Eras Tour shows taking place in the UK this summer, have been updated by the promoter.

'The ‘lead booker’ policy has been removed, meaning that the person whose name is on the Ticketmaster account used to purchase tickets is no longer required to attend the event.

'All other terms and conditions remain unchanged. We hope you enjoy the show!'

What does this change mean for ticket holders?

This essentially means that the person who paid for the tickets is no longer required to be at the venue, so you don't need to worry if you are not going with the cardholder who purchased the tickets.

Taylor will be bringing her 'Eras' tour to the UK in June, starting off in Edinburgh before also visiting Liverpool, Cardiff and London. She will then return to London with three shows at Wembley Stadium in August.

During the three-and-a-half hour concert, fans can enjoy an array of tracks from Taylor's hugely-successful career , spanning her different musical 'eras'.

Take a look at Taylor Swift's incredible career so far:

2002: taylor swift performs the national anthem.

In 2002, a young Taylor Swift sang the American National Anthem at a Philadelphia 76ers basketball game. It was clear early on she was destined to be a star.

2004: Taylor Swift signs her first record deal

In 2004, 14-year-old Taylor signed a record deal with Sony/ATV, becoming the youngest signing in the company's history.

2006: Taylor Swift releases her first single and album

By age 16, Taylor was already getting major recognition as an established country artist. If you're planning to shake it off at Taylor Swift 's The Eras Tour later this summer, Ticketmaster have just updated their ticket rules. Here's what you need to know.

After months of watching The Eras Tour unfold on TikTok (and, y'know, via her stadium concert tour that we can't stop watching), it's coming to the UK. The European leg of TayTay's tour will kick off on May 9, 2024 in Paris and wrap up on August 20, 2024 in London, and Ticketmaster just announced a change to the way they're organizing the event.

Previously, their terms and conditions stated that the 'lead booker' must be present at the event, meaning the cardholder who paid for the tickets had to attend in person. Obviously, this was a concern for anyone who had been bought the tickets as gifts, or younger fans whose parents had purchased the tickets on their behalf.

Fans were left confused over whether the 'lead booker' had to be present at the actual gig, or attend at the gates where people were showing their tickets.

Thankfully, though, in an email shared this week [April 4], Ticketmaster updated their T&Cs, sharing a new policy. In an email to ticket holders, they wrote: "The 'lead booker' policy has been removed, meaning that the person whose name is on the Ticketmaster account used to purchase tickets is no longer required to attend the event.

"All other terms and conditions remain unchanged. We hope you enjoy the show!"

While this is great news for many fans, others joked it was stressful receiving an email from Ticketmaster with 'The Eras Tour' in the subject line. Don't panic us like that!

Ticketmaster announce change to The Eras Tours tickets that every Taylor Swift fan needs to know about.

Taylor Swift fans given Eras Tour ticket hope as Ticketmaster gives resale update with date set for official release of unwanted seats

Wembley dates may have sold out but there is another opportunity to buy tickets through resale

Taylor Swift performs during the Eras Tour, at MetLife Stadium in New Rutherford, New Jersey

Some Taylor Swift fans have had a Cruel Summer so far after missing out on tickets to her Eras tour which comes to London next June and August. But while those anxious waits on the phone and refreshing the computer screen felt wasted when the Wembley and other UK dates sold out, Ticketmaster has now given an update on when further tickets may be available, via resale, from those fans who got them but cannot attend.

PLEASE SEE UPDATED ARTICLE HERE WITH RESALE DETAILS ON AUGUST 1.

There had been controversy over a section in the terms and conditions related to the 'lead booker' whereby it stated that the person who booked the tickets had to be present at the gigs. This dashed any hopes of getting tickets through resale, but Ticketmaster has now given a further update which has been shared on The Eras Tour UK & Ireland Twitter page, an account dedicated to news about the latest tour.

Ticketmaster has said that although the terms, put in place by event promoter AEG, mentioned the lead booker needing to be present, there would be an opportunity to resell unwanted tickets, but only via official partners - Ticketmaster, AXS or directly through the venue's website.

In an email from Ticketmaster to a fan, shared on Twitter, the company states: "Transfer will be available for all tickets closer to the event. This means you will be able to transfer your tickets to whoever you choose and the lead booker will not need to be present."

They added that the promoter AEG Presents has stated "the only way to obtain a valid ticket for Taylor Swift's shows is via the approved ticket agents". This is Ticketmaster, AXS or directly through the venue's website.

It adds: "Any tickets found to be purchased via resale on the non-official secondary market will not be valid for entry into the concerts and will be cancelled in accordance with the terms and conditions of sale." The authorised resale of tickets will begin on August 1 via the aforementioned sites.

Fans who have tickets will be notified by email when the time comes to be able to transfer their tickets. There will also be a cap on the price of resale tickets to stop touts.

The Eras tour comes to Wembley on June 21, 22 and 23, and August 15, 16 and 17, 2024.

Taylor Swift fans in the UK have been scammed out of $1.2 million, bank says

  • UK Taylor Swift fans have lost over $1.2 million to Eras Tour ticket scams, Lloyds Bank says.
  • The bank issued an urgent warning after it said 600 of its customers fell victim to the scam.
  • Most of the ticket scams targeted 25- 34-year-olds through fake ads on Facebook.

Insider Today

It looks like it's heating up to be a Cruel Summer — at least for Swifties in the United Kingdom seeking Eras Tour tickets.

Fans of Taylor Swift have already been scammed out of over $1.2 million trying to purchase concert tickets, mostly through Facebook, according to Lloyds Bank .

This prompted the bank, which is among the United Kingdom's largest, to issue an "urgent warning." The warning said that at least 600 of its customers had been victimized by a ticket scam, losing anywhere from ÂŁ332 to over ÂŁ1,000.

Related stories

Outside of its own banking system, Lloyds estimated some 3,000 more Brits may have fallen prey to the scams, losing as much as ÂŁ1 million, or over $1.2 million, in total nationwide.

Most of the scams appeared to target 25- to 34-year-olds using fake ads on Facebook, the bank said.

"For her legion of dedicated Swifties, the excitement is building ahead of Taylor's Eras Tour finally touching down in the UK this summer. However cruel fraudsters have wasted no time in targeting her most loyal fans as they rush to pick up tickets for her must-see concerts," fraud prevention director Liz Ziegler said.

The popularity of Swift's Eras Tour has caused all manner of problems for its ticket-seeking fans.

Many Swift fans in the United States were forced to purchase resale tickets after Ticketmaster botched the 2022 release of tickets, prompting a congressional inquiry the following year. Swifties stateside told Business Insider they had to do serious sleuthing to confirm they weren't being scammed when they paid for resale tickets.

In July 2023, the San Francisco Better Business Bureau warned Swift fans that scammers were running ticket scams as her "Eras Tour" date approached in the city, according to ABC .

Alma Galvan, BBB regional communications manager, told the outlet that scammers will sometimes pretend to be friends on social media and sell fans fake tickets for a large price.

The BBB recommends only purchasing tickets from reputable vendors and using a credit card before a debit card, cash transfer app, or cash, the report said.

One Swift fan who spent more than $1,500 on tickets on Facebook Marketplace told BI that she insisted on using Paypal Goods and Services for the transaction because it helps users get a refund if their concert tickets never arrive.
