ATTA names new president

association of thai travel agents (atta)

Veteran tour operator, Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, has been elected as the new president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA).

Sisdivachr, who previously served in the position from 2011-2014, had beat Mingkwan Metmowlee, president of ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA), to win the election on Thursday (March 25).

In a speech after his win, Sisdivachr pledged to take urgent action to save Thailand’s tourism industry, with aims of reopening the country to international tourists by 3Q.

To that end, he will work with airlines to launch a digital Covid-19 vaccine passport to lure foreigners back to the country, as well as continue appealing to the government for financial aid to help tour operators impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Additionally, he will work with the private sector to train the tourism workforce, create marketing tools, and develop new products and services for tourists.

Sisdivachr said: “My aim is to save Thailand’s tourism industry and reclaim the country’s position as top tourist destination on the global map.”

BANGKOK (The Nation Thailand/ANN): The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) expects more than 20,000 Chinese arrivals per day from March 1 when Thailand and China permanently waive visa requirements for their citizens.

“The confidence of Chinese tourists in travelling within Thailand has been fully restored,” ATTA president Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn said on Friday, citing statistics of Chinese arrivals in the first two months of 2024 at over 1 million people.

“However, the government must continue tourism promotion campaigns together with private partners to attract Chinese tour agencies organising group tours and chartered flights,” he added

Sisdivachr hoped that the permanent free visa policy would help maintain Chinese arrivals at over 20,000 per day throughout the year, which would help Thailand meet the target of welcoming 40 million foreign arrivals, generating around 2.3 trillion baht in revenue.

“The key is to keep the confidence level high. The government must make sure there are no negative news that could disrupt tourists’ confidence in travelling to Thailand, especially regarding tourists’ safety,” he said.

He was referring to the news of a Chinese tourist in Phuket having to wait two hours for an ambulance after she fell to the ground while parasailing and broke her leg. The tourist recently posted her grievance on social media, which went viral.

“The government must order all provincial governors to increase measures to ensure tourists’ safety as well as improve the quality of tourist services. This will ensure that the tourists would have a good experience while in Thailand,” said Sisdivachr.

Thailand had first implemented temporary visa exemption in September last year, beginning with visitors from China and Kazakhstan followed by India and Taiwan in November.

The temporary visa waiver for the citizens of China and Kazakhstan expired on February 29, but Chinese tourists can continue visiting Thailand under the permanent free visa policy, which started on Friday (March 1). - The Nation Thailand/ANN

PM asked to clarify what he means by ‘free visas’

PM asked to clarify what he means by ‘free visas’

The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) has called on Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to clarify his policy of providing “free visas” to Chinese tourists in a bid to boost tourism.

“Do you mean allowing Chinese to enter Thailand without having to apply for a visa, or waiving the visa application fee for them?” ATTA president Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn asked the new PM on Thursday.

Sisdivachr said Srettha had mentioned the free visa policy during a meeting with CEOs of eight airlines earlier this month to discuss Thailand’s readiness to welcome foreign arrivals during the upcoming high season.

“The PM said offering free visas to Chinese arrivals would reduce obstacles and attract more Chinese tourists to Thailand,” he said. “We want clarification on how this measure will be implemented: does it involve offering visa-free access or just waiving the visa application fee?”

The ATTA president said that removing the visa requirement for Chinese will be similar to the policy that allows Thais to visit any Asean country without a visa.

“This measure has been discussed several times in the past,” said Sisdivachr. “However, the security agency has never approved, saying that the visa process helps deter particular groups of Chinese from coming in.”

He was referring to those aiming to engage in illegal business in Thailand.

Sisdivachr added that the waiving of the visa application fee had earlier been applied for a certain period.

“If Thailand is to bring back this policy for Chinese tourists, immigration agencies will need to streamline the application process as there will be an influx of arrivals,” he said.

Currently, Chinese visitors who wish to enter Thailand must apply for a visa at the embassy or consular office and pay a fee of 1,000 baht per person per time. Alternatively, they can apply for a visa on arrival at the immigration checkpoint and pay a fee of 2,000 baht per person per time.

The ATTA president also advised airlines to increase flight routes and frequency during the high season to facilitate increased Chinese tourist arrivals in line with the free visa policy.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has set an ambitious goal of attracting 5.3 million Chinese tourists and generating 446 billion baht in revenue this year. However, the number of Chinese arrivals in the first six months was lower than expected, with only 1.6 million arrivals.

Founded in 1984 under the name “Travel Agents Association (TAA)”, the Association is a gathering of outbound tour operators and airlines ticketing and reservations agents. The key objective is to promote and raise the standards of the members’ businesses.

Then in 1990, TAA was renamed as the Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA) that has been used until the present. This reflects TTAA as being a tourism association of Thailand as well as has a meaning that covers the tour business.

Since its foundation, the TTAA has had a role in the promotion and creation of stability for BSP Agents and outbound tour operators, which has been the major objective for establishing the Association.  Furthermore, TTAA has cooperated with other tourism associations in promoting the growth and strength of Thailand’s tourism industry until today.
