When it comes to international travel, many people tend to think of major cities like London, Dubai, Tokyo, Berlin, Paris, and others. While these are all beautiful places, they can also be very expensive .

During my journey as a digital nomad , I’ve learned that you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on international travel to have a great time.

So, for all of my budget travellers out there, I’ve compiled this list of some of the cheapest places to travel from Canada.

Let’s take an adventure!

Cheapest Travel Destinations In The US

If you’re new to travelling or have never been out of the country before, taking a trip to the US is a great way to dip your toes in the water. The US is very similar to Canada in terms of culture and finance.

It’s also our neighbouring country, so crossing the border is relatively simple and round-trip flights are more affordable compared to long-distance overseas flights.

This is also why many Canadians choose to retire in the US .

Here are a few of the more affordable travel destinations down south.

1. Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is an oasis in the desert state of Nevada. It’s known as the gambling capital of the world and is home to an impressive array of luxurious casinos, event venues, and high-end shopping.

While you may assume that all of this luxury would come with a high cost, the reality is quite the opposite .

Thanks to tourism initiatives, flights to the city are generally very affordable. Additionally, many of the hotels are owned by casinos. These casinos often offer affordable rates on hotel rooms in hopes that you’ll spend your extra money gambling in their casinos.

This is entirely optional (remember – the house always wins ).

Recently, I saw that the Luxor (the giant pyramid-shaped, Egyptian-themed casino/hotel) was offering rooms for as low as $60 per night!

Casinos aside, Vegas is a bustling city with an incredible nightlife scene featuring top-tier clubs and nightly performances. It’s also a hub for international business and networking.

If you’re really on a tight budget, simply walking through the casinos and hotels to admire the art and architecture is a great way to spend an evening.

2. New York City, New York

While New York City isn’t exactly cheap when it comes to accommodations, it’s just an eight-hour drive from Toronto and a six-hour drive from Montreal .

Road trips are a great way to have fun on a budget, as they’re often cheaper than booking international flights. Once you get to NYC, you could always sleep in your car or stay a few nights at a hostel.

3. Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix is one of the largest (and cheapest) cities in the US. Arizona’s beautiful desert landscape will seem like an alien world compared to the snow and ice we’re used to in Canada.

Downtown Phoenix is a fun city to visit and has a vibrant Latin-American culture. The beautiful r ed rocks and energy vortexes of Sedona are just a two-hour drive north of the city.

4. Orlando, Florida

Orlando lies in central Florida and is best known for being the home to Walt Disney World and Universal Studios – two massive theme parks that are great for family vacations.

While these parks are generally expensive, Costco has been known to offer affordable travel packages.

If you drive an hour west of the city, you can also experience the beautiful natural springs of the Florida Everglades. Ginnie Springs is a great place to swim and dive in crystal-clear springs, and you can also camp there overnight!

5. Portland, Oregon

Just a six-hour drive south of Vancouver, B.C., Portland offers a great mix of urban and natural attractions.

Visitors can explore Powell’s City of Books, the Japanese Garden, stroll through Washington Park, or simply enjoy the vibrant food truck scene.

Portland is known for being an affordable city due to its lack of sales tax, reasonably priced public transportation, and relatively lower housing costs compared to major metropolitan areas.

It’s also the home of Nike founder Phil Knight – who’s an incredible entrepreneur to read up on.

Affordable Travel Destinations: Central America

Moving on south, we have the continent of Central America, which is home to countries like Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.

Technically speaking, Mexico is geographically considered part of North America. However, the United Nations groups Mexico in with Central America for statistical purposes .

6. Mexico City, Mexico

When it comes to cheap places, you can’t go wrong with Mexico , thanks to its extremely favourable exchange rate.

Mexico City (or “CDMX”) offers a wealth of attractions, from the historic Zócalo Square to the renowned Frida Kahlo Museum and the majestic Chapultepec Castle.

The street food is absolutely incredible as well.

While many locals in the city speak a bit of English, it’s a good idea to acquaint yourself with some basic Spanish vocabulary.

The only downside is the high rate of theft and pickpocketing. I recommend travelling light and wearing basic clothing to avoid undue attention.

7. Oaxaca, Mexico

If the hustle and bustle of CDMX isn’t your thing, consider the seaside city of Oaxaca. This small city has a rich history, delicious street food, and some of the country’s most beautiful white sand beaches.

It’s also one of the safest places to visit in Mexico and has a relatively low crime rate compared to larger tourist destinations.

8. San Jose, Costa Rica

San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica. The country offers incredible beaches and lush rainforests, is very tourist-friendly, and has a large population of English-speaking expats.

Costa Rica is one of the best places for digital nomads to visit thanks to its generous digital nomad visa , which allows eligible travellers to stay for a year at a time and can be renewed annually.

It’s also a great place for a shorter vacation, as it doesn’t have any visa requirements (just a valid passport).

9. Antigua, Guatemala

With its colonial beauty, rich culture, and dirt-cheap hotel prices, Antigua is one of the cheapest destinations in Central America.

The volcanic mountains and rain forests surrounding the city are excellent for hiking or an offroad expedition.

10. San Salvador, El Salvador

El Salvador offers a mix of history and affordable modernity. The food here is excellent and incredibly affordable (thanks to the exchange rate).

Key attractions include the San Salvador Cathedral and exploring the Joya de Cerén archaeological site.

San Salvador doesn’t have a large English-speaking population, so you may want to hire a tour guide if you’re not at least conversational in Spanish.

Affordable Travel Destinations: South America

Moving south of the equator, South America is home to a number of beautiful and affordable Spanish-speaking countries.

11. Medellin, Colombia

If you’re looking for a low-cost vacation to South America, Medellin won’t disappoint. While many associate the city with its cartel history and the infamous Pablo Escobar (thanks to the Netflix hit show Narcos ), the city has long since moved past that.

Today, it’s known for its vibrant arts and cultural scene, great food, cheap modern hotels, and natural parks.

12. Santiago, Chile

Cradled by the natural beauty of the Andes, Santiago merges cosmopolitan flair with a bit of historical charm and a vibrant culture.

Visit the hilltop sanctuary of Cerro San Cristóbal, delve into history at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, and taste some authentic Chilean wines.

If you like food, definitely try the country’s specialty – empanadas . If you’re tired of the city, there are tons of natural attractions in the surrounding regions and tours that will help you get your adventure fix.

13. Lima, Peru

Lima is an unbeatable choice for travellers looking for a mix of ancient history with the charm of a seaside city.

This is a great place for an adventure, from the scenic cliffs of Miraflores to the Larco Museum and Machu Picchu (a four-hour train ride from Lima).

Locals don’t speak much English, so it helps to be conversational in Spanish or enlist a tour guide. Also, be sure to try the ceviche – it’s some of the best in the world !

14. La Paz, Bolivia

Located a 25-hour drive south of Lima, La Paz, Bolivia, offers an unforgettable experience without the hefty price tag.

Bolivia is a very cheap country, has incredible food and culture, and you can view the breathtaking peaks of the Andes from the centre of La Paz.

La Paz is home to the world’s highest cable cars, a Witches’ Market, and takes pride in its indigenous heritage. Like Peru, learning basic Spanish is a good idea before travelling here.

Affordable Travel Destinations: Europe

European countries like the UK, Germany, and France are often known for being expensive.

Travelling to a popular tourist destination like London or Paris can be a lot of fun, but it will set you back financially. Thankfully, plenty of more affordable destinations offer similar charm and culture.

15. Budapest, Hungary

In Eastern Europe, Budapest offers history, stunning architecture, and a vibrant nightlife scene. You can also book boutique hotels and unique experiences at prices that won’t break the bank.

If you’re trying to save money, I recommend checking out the natural thermal baths, walking down the Danube River, and trying the local Hungarian cuisine.

Explore Buda Castle, the bustling Great Market Hall, and the historic Jewish Quarter if you enjoy architecture.

16. Porto, Portugal

While you may have heard of Lisbon (Portugal’s capital city), its sister city of Porto is lesser known. Set on the coastline by the Douru River, this city offers incredible beauty and affordability.

Check out its historic cobbled streets, savour the local “port wine,” and watch the sunset by the river.

One of the great things about Porto is the large number of English-speaking locals, which makes it very friendly to Canadian travellers. You also don’t need a special visa to enter the country, just a valid passport.

17. Athens, Greece

While many envision Greece for its costly all-inclusive resorts, Athens is one of Europe’s most budget-friendly destinations.

If you’re a fan of ancient Greek mythology, a trip to the Acropolis and the Parthenon is definitely in order. To get a better feel for the culture, wander the vibrant Plaka neighbourhood and try the local Greek cuisine (which is quite affordable).

While Greek is the primary language here, many of the city’s residents also speak conversational English due to the high number of tourists.

18. Prague, Czech Republic

The city of Prague is over 1,100 years old and is steeped in ancient history.

If you like Gothic and Baroque architecture, the iconic Charles Bridge and the Astronomical Clock are must-sees. The local ambiance at the Old Town Square is worth experiencing, as are the hearty Czech meals found at local eateries.

The city’s historic buildings are blended into the amenities of a modern city, and there’s a great local nightlife and hospitality scene for those who want to socialize or enjoy a night out.

Though Czech is the predominant language here, the city is friendly to tourists, and many people speak conversational English, especially near the city centre.

Affordable Travel Destinations: Asia

While Europe offers the familiarity of Western countries, Asia offers the opportunity to experience vastly different cultures, cuisines, art, and history.

Southeast Asia, in particular, is known for being very affordable, and it’s not uncommon for Canadians to retire there .

19. Bali, Indonesia

Indonesia is one of the cheapest countries in Southeast Asia, and Bali is its tourist centre. It’s also home to a large number of expats and digital nomads, so it’s a great first place to travel to as an English speaker.

There are lots of co-working spots with fast internet, and food/accommodations are very affordable compared to my hometown of Vancouver.

While the Philippine Islands are known for their beautiful beaches and tropical landscapes, the city of Manila is a great example of the country’s urban modernization.

Trading skyscrapers, hotels, condos, and businesses line Manila’s energetic streets. However, there’s also a fusion of history, as you’ll find in the city’s local parks, temples, and protected historic buildings.

One of the great things about travelling in the Philippines is that a large portion of residents speak English, making it very friendly for Western travellers.

21. Hanoi, Vietnam

Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi blends centuries-old architecture, buzzing streets, and serene lakes into one large, diverse city.

Despite its modern city atmosphere, there’s a deep sense of culture and tradition here, which visitors can experience in the local cuisine, city markets, and historic landmarks.

There’s also a favourable exchange rate in Vietnam, making it an excellent destination for budget travellers. Hanoi is also a very safe city with a low crime rate, so it’s a good option for solo travellers.

Africa is full of history and culture. Many of the continent’s cities are also quite affordable. These are some of the cheapest.

English is widely spoken in addition to Arabic, making it a tourist-friendly city. Egyptian cuisine and hospitality are both incredible and affordable, and the city has a number of budget-friendly accommodations.

23. Marrakech, Morocco

Nestled at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, Marrakech is known for its historic architecture, vibrant medinas, lush gardens, cafes, and markets.

Walking through the street, you’ll often hear the rhythmic sounds of traditional Moroccan music, smell incredible food from street vendors, and be able to shop with the city’s many talented artisans.

It’s also a very affordable country, home to many budget hotels, and is full of friendly, hospital people.

While the city experienced a major (and deadly) earthquake in September 2022 , much of the city and its historic architecture still remain. Before booking a trip here, it’s a good idea to double-check and verify your plans.

How To Find Cheap Flights From Canada

Often, the most expensive part about visiting these cheap travel destinations is the cost of airline tickets. Once you arrive, you can be a frugal traveller and control how much you spend.

One of the best ways to save money on air travel is to book your trip months in advance. The closer of a departure date you select, the more the ticket is going to cost you.

Google Flights is also a great resource that allows you to view historic flight price data and set price alerts so you can get the best deal.

From South America and the Caribbean to Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, the following are popular travel destinations that are cheaper and less busy in their shoulder seasons (just before and after the peak time) including the recommended daily budget for backpackers and mid-range travellers, the cheapest time of year to go, what it’s like there during that time and when you should book flights to minimize costs.

There are lots of ways to enjoy the family-friendly city of Florida City on a budget. If you enjoy walking, take your walking shoes, pick up a map, and head out. Restaurants are plentiful and many are inexpensive and it’s within striking distance of Miami, the Florida Keys and Everglades National Park.

A good selection of Florida City hotels are reasonably priced and dollars can be stretched with some advance planning, making this destination a favorite among off-season travelers searching for a low cost vacation to remember.

The cheapest months to travel are in January and September, when flights can be up to 30% below standard prices.

• Temperature: January: 24°C high; 12°C low. September: 32°C high; 22°C low
• Travel time from Toronto: 3 hours 20 minutes

 2. San Francisco, California

In the fall, the San Francisco tourist rush slows, the fog lifts, and hotel rates drop. The city’s temperate weather is also at its warmest. In spite of the sometimes inclement weather, “Frisco” is a popular tourist destination known for its fast moving fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of architecture and landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge. There are some surprisingly cheap attractions in San Francisco. Take your walking shoes.

3. Las Vegas, Nevada

The cheapest months to fly to Las Vegas are January, February, April, and September. Prices can be higher during March, July, and December. For the lowest fares, fly to Las Vegas either mid-week or on Saturday.

Reports are the most cost-efficient days to fly are, in order, Wednesday, Tuesday and Saturday. Tickets cost more on Friday and Sunday because more people fly to and from their destinations on these days. There are many, many freebies to be had in Vegas.

4. Varadero, Cuba

Varadero is home to stunning beaches and excellent all-inclusive package deals where a hotel room can cost as little as $27 a night. You can get flights to Varadero for around $400 or less if you book far enough ahead.

People who don’t like crowds usually go to Cuba in mid to late April. The weather then is usually settled though the sea can be a little on the cooler side. However, the air temperature is just right and there are no bugs. Also it is usually the cheapest time. All inclusives are the best value.

5. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Whether you’re into Mexican culture, water sports or whale-watching, you can’t go wrong with Puerto Vallarta as a low-cost destination. Hotels range from boutique hotels for as little as $50 a night to more expensive all-inclusive places.  If you are not a big fan of all-inclusives and you enjoy the real Mexico, book a hotel in Old Vallarta.

The prices are very reasonable and hotels while small by North American standards are clean and user friendly. The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta is between April and June when the weather is pleasant and the room rates are affordable. During these months, rain is scarce and there are fewer tourists compared to the winter high season.

6. Lisbon, Portugal

The best time to visit Lisbon is either from March to May or September to October, because the weather is still warm, hotel rates are cheaper and there are fewer crowds than in summer. In those seasons, you might also be able to squeeze in a few beach days.

The summer sees hot temperatures and crowded shores. Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city. If you book far enough ahead or can take advantage of last minute deals, there are lots of savings to be had for budget travellers.

• Temperature: Spring: 20°C high; 12°C low. Fall: 26°C high; 17°C low

7. Split, Croatia

The best time to visit Split is September and October when tourist crowds have dispersed and the Adriatic Sea is still warm enough for swimming. For those on a budget, there are many cheap and cheerful hotels and B&Bs that have a lot to offer, with most providing WiFi and convenient locations.

Split is the second-largest city of Croatia. The best time to visit in May to June and September and October. During these months, the days are mild and sunny. Being the shoulder season accommodation is easy to find and much cheaper compared to the peak season.

• Travel time from Vancouver: 14 hours 30 minutes

The best value for dollar time to visit Jamaica is between mid November to January. Jamaica consists of white sandy beaches with pleasant weather conditions during this time.

Many of its all-inclusive resorts are clustered in Montego Bay, with its British-colonial architecture, and Negril, known for its diving and snorkeling sites. Jamaica still remains less expensive than many other Caribbean islands. Plan well ahead or take advantage of many last minute deals if you are not on a fixed schedule.

Peak tourist season in the Bahamas begins in mid-December and continues until mid-April, ending just after spring break. Late spring and early summer are more economical for travelers, as the cost of travel drops in the off-season and for the outer islands in particular.

The cheapest month to fly to the Bahamas is September. There are many low cost B&Bs and some great deals to be had around this time.

10. Tulum, Mexico

Tulum, an old Maya city, is located next to a sandy white beach and contrasting deep blue sea. To get here, fly to Cancun for less than $350 and then take a bus. Hotel rooms vary greatly in price but there are plenty of good hotels that charge as low as $50 a night if you book well ahead.

Blessed with pleasant weather much of the year, Tulum receives most visitors between late fall and early spring. However, there are many benefits to planning your trip during the region’s shoulder months, including cheaper rates and smaller crowds. The best time to visit Tulum is between November and December. You’ll get the benefit of post hurricane-season breezes, plus there are great hotel deals to be had.

11. Mexico City, Mexico

Budget travelers should aim to visit during the low season that runs from the day after Easter to around December 20. Although finding a cheap plane ticket may be possible year-round, be aware that hotel prices rise dramatically during the weeks of Easter and Christmas.

Mexico City is a bustling metropolis filled with exciting sightseeing attractions and things to do, which make it an incredible travel destination for visitors of all ages.If you are on a tight budget, there are many older, low-cost hotels in the city. They may look run down but most of them are well maintained and clean.

12. Marrakesh, Morocco

The best times to visit Marrakesh are from March to May and between September and November. These shoulder seasons provide average daytime temps in the low 20 degrees to low 30s and very affordable hotel rates.

The best value for money time to visit Vietnam is late September to late October, as most people are put off visiting during the rainy season. Hotels in Hanoi are cheap and relatively easy to find. Low cost deals are often available from November to February, when the weather is slightly better.

However, regardless of the time of year, don’t leave Hanoi without trying street foods. Cheap and delicious. Hanoi is ideal for those looking to experience a more traditional Vietnamese lifestyle while travelling with an eye on their budget. While Ho Chi Minh City’s urban landscape provides an interesting slice of Vietnamese life, it is better suited for luxury travellers.

If you do have the budget, you can explore the best of both worlds as domestic flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are available on a daily basis.

14. Nha Trang, Vietnam

The long dry season in Vietnam runs from January to August and the least humidity is between February and April. The cheapest month to fly to Vietnam is September or October. On average, it costs $26 per night to book a 3-star hotel in Nha Trang for a night. You’ll pay around $39 if you choose to stay in a 4-star hotel tonight.

Nha Trang is a bustling city, but it is also home to some of the world’s most pristine white beaches. Find a clean cheap hotel and enjoy the street food. You’ll have a low cost vacation to remember.

15. Washington, DC

Washington, D.C. has plenty of budget hotels, as low as $50 a night if you do your homework and don’t expect luxury for this price. Also, you can get flights for around $250 depending on where you are flying from.

This is a great city for a family vacation, since many of its most famous attractions are free. For the budget conscious however, fall is an excellent time to visit D.C. The temperatures usually remain mild until Thanksgiving.

If you can catch a warm weekend between Thanksgiving and New Years this will be the cheapest time to visit D.C. because business travel is down at this time of year.

The cheapest times to visit Utah on average and for great deals on Utah hotels, best dates run from the middle of January 15th through to early March. Busy times are the week of February 12th; April 16th to May 6th and August 6th to December 9th except the week of November 26th.

The absolute cheapest time to take a vacation in Utah is usually mid to late September. The reason for going? The canyons of Utah are unique. They should be on everyone’s bucket list.

17. Cancún, Mexico

In Cancun, prices peak from mid-December to mid-January. The cheapest time to visit is from May through to November and particularly September and October, the two rainiest months.

The best time to experience comfortable weather and less-expensive prices is the shoulder seasons; early December and April. There are many last minute deals for Cancun or book well ahead for the best prices.

18. San José del Cabo, Mexico

San José del Cabo is a resort city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. It’s known for its sandy beaches and colonial buildings. You should plan to spend around $41 per day on your vacation in San Juan Del Cabos, which is the average daily price for hotel and meals.

Book at least 3 weeks before departure in order to get a below-average price deal. High season is usually April, May and June. The cheapest month to fly to San José del Cabo is May.

19. San Juan, Puerto Rico

The news from Puerto Rico is finally starting to sound more positive after Hurricane Maria’s devastation. Most of the island has electricity, running water, internet and other services again.

You can get flights for under $300 and hotel deals for less than $100 a night in the capital, San Juan, cheaper once you are out of the main tourist spots. The best deals are in paradores, family-owned inns. The cheapest month to fly to Puerto Rico is September.

20. Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean nation that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti to the west. It’s known for its beaches, resorts and golfing.

The months of March, April and May attract fewer visitors. This is a good time to book cheap flights as the weather is still warm and sunny. The off season runs April through November is considered the low-cost time. November and early December is also a great time to book cheap flights.

21. Bocas del Toro, Panama

if you are looking for cheaper fare and deals, opt for either off-season periods or shoulder periods. Shoulder periods are from late November / early December and May. Hotels are cheaper, often between $50 and less than $100 a night. You can fly to Panama City for under $500 if you do some research on travel websites.

Traveling around the islands by bus and boat is inexpensive. If you can keep your accommodation costs down and avoid the really high-end restaurants, you’ll save a lot of money in this country as most  attractions, transport, and local food are all very inexpensive.

22. Guadalajara, Mexico

Guadalajara is a beautiful city in western Mexico. It’s known for tequila and mariachi music, both created in Jalisco, the state of which Guadalajara is the capital. This is Mexico’s second largest city and is where you can experience all those things most people associate with the country: tequila, mariachi music, bullfights, Mexican food, colonial plazas and much more.

Flights to Guadalajara can be had for around $500 and you can stay in a decent hotel for less than $100 a night. If you are travelling to Guadalajara, try booking at least 10 weeks in advance for the best deal. The cheapest month to travel is in September.

23. Barranquilla, Columbia

Barranquilla is usually overshadowed by Cartagena and Medellin but this city at the mouth of the Magdalena River is a hidden gem. Its Carnival is one of the biggest in South America and the party continues throughout the rest of the year.

You can get a good hotel room for under $50 a night and flights for less than $500. High season is considered to be January, February and December. The cheapest month to fly to Barranquilla is April.

The city is known for its enormous Carnival, which brings together flamboyantly costumed performers, elaborate floats and cumbia music.If you’re living in North America, your cheapest option is to check out SpiritAir.com or Kiwi.com. They consistently offer cheap flights through Ft. Lauderdale to Central America.

High season is considered to be June, July and August. The cheapest month to fly to Guatemala is February. Book well in advance for best deals or if you can, take advantage of last minute deals.

For a tropical Caribbean island with world-class beaches and amenities, Puerto Rico might not seem like the ideal destination for budget travelers looking for an exotic getaway, But this island can be surprisingly affordable for the savvy tourist.

There are many factors to consider when planning a vacation, from finding cheap places to travel and the safety of your intended destination to hotel options . But like it or not, there’s one thing that influences our travel decisions more than anything else: money. All those resort fees, plane tickets , and life-changing meals add up pretty quickly—so at the end of the day, we really want to prioritize places where our greenbacks have the most spending power.

We did a little digging to find the countries where the U.S. dollar goes the furthest, based on current exchange rates. And while our fickle global economy means those rates can change at any time, certain places have consistently offered more bang for our buck over the years—and, fingers crossed, they should stay that way well into 2024 .

Without further ado, here are 21 of the best cheap places to travel around the world.

Budapest, Hungary

The Sri Lankan rupee has slowly gotten more and more favorable over the past couple of decades, but it completely skyrocketed starting a couple of years ago (a dollar converted to 200 SLR in February 2022, and now look where we are). We’re more excited than ever to explore this incredible island nation, where you can see leafy tea plantations, Buddhist temples, golden beaches, and 200-mile hiking trails in one memorable trip.

The Costa Rican colón has depreciated a bit in recent months, but it remains favorable for US travelers. Then there’s the fact that the country’s best asset (i.e. its natural beauty) is mostly free to enjoy. Even five-star resorts like  Shangri-La Boracay can be reserved for under $350 per night, which is all the incentive we need to book a trip right now.

For your next tropical island vacation, skip pricey, popular locations like the Maldives and Bora Bora for inexpensive Madagascar—an Indian Ocean treasure filled with breathtaking rainforests and lemur-filled national parks. Plan your visit around the opening of Namoroka Tsingy Exploration Camp ( scheduled for mid-2024 ), which will feature seven luxury safari tents inside the essentially unvisited Namoroka National Park. Alternately, swing by the island nation as part of a cruise itinerary: Luxe cruise lines like Silversea , Lindblad , Swan Hellenic , and Seabourne have all added the country as a port of call on new voyages.

And we’ve been anxiously awaiting the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum for years now, but it looks like it might actually happen in 2024.

If you’re ready and willing to shell out the big bucks, however, we highly recommend shacking up at  The Datai Langkawi —it’s definitely expensive but wholly worth it.

Here in Canada, we just live in one of the many beautiful countries throughout the world. There are so many more out there to explore. While some of them can cost a fortune, others have affordable prices, especially if you are a budget traveler. All of these countries below are considered budget destinations because, even though they do have expensive hotels and amenities, they also have budget hotels and vacation packages at budget prices.

The fact that the Bahamas is in the Caribbean should, alone, be enough to convince you to travel here. The fact that it's a cheap country to travel to is another bonus. It's made of 16 different islands and covers 100,000 square miles of some of the clearest oceans in the world. They have white sandy beaches, all inclusive hotels, and plenty of culture to explore. Don't forget sightseeing and outdoor activities either . You could easily just spend your time relaxing and enjoying your vacation.

Mexico is another popular choice for those who travel on a budget and looking for a cheap destination. They have warm sandy stunning beaches, all inclusive resorts as well as plenty of activities available to tourists. There are plenty of places throughout Mexico that you can go, but their are also a few really popular places including:

• Cabo San Lucas

If traveling to Cuba on a budget is on your list, then now is the time to do it. It's a very cheap country to travel to and there are plenty of places to explore. Whether you choose to go to the Western Region, Center Region or Eastern Region, there are plenty of vacation packages and all inclusive resorts available in order to help you cut costs.

Panama is located in Central America. It's another country full of gorgeous weather, vibrant culture and tons of sites to see. Guatemala is another county that's located in Central America. It's actually just south of Mexico. And, like Mexico, there is plenty to do here. Philippines

The Philippines is a country in southeast Asia. It consists of 7,000 islands that are broken down into 3 different regions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Throughout the Philippines there are plenty of beautiful cities to visit as well as immerse yourself in the culture.

Another really popular place that is located in western Europe is France. Surprisingly, it's cheaper to travel to France than you may think. When you are in France, there are also plenty of other European countries that are just short affordable train rides away.

There's so much culture to experience all throughout Europe and with their well connected transit systems, going to France can take you much farther than you may think. You may not want to experience other countries though. In a bustling city like Paris, there is plenty to keep you occupied for days or even weeks.

As you may already know, Scotland is part of the United Kingdom. There is so much to do and see in this country. There are castles throughout the different parts of the country, all with their own history. The culture itself is amazing to see in Scotland. That said, there are plenty of other reasons that Canadians choose to go there. One of these reasons is to attend post secondary school with one of these schools being the Aberdeen Business School.

When you are looking for cheap travel destinations, you can't forget Brazil. You may not know this but Brazil is the largest country in South America and Latin America. Some of the popular places that Canadians visit in this country are:

Croatia (the Republic of Croatia) is located at the crossroads of Central Europe and Eastern Europe and is another place that's considered to be one of the cheapest places to travel to from Canada. There are 10 different tourist regions here, and they all consist of gorgeous destinations, culture, heritage and natural beauty. There is plenty to see no matter where you choose to go.

Saving Money While Traveling

When it comes to traveling on a budget, it's more than just finding the cheapest destinations. You also need to find cheap flights, cheap food (all inclusive hotels and street food). Oftentimes direct flights are more expensive, so if you are okay with a layover or two, that could save you hundreds. You should also check the cheapest destinations based on the time of year. Most places have a time of year where it's the cheapest to travel or there is a specific cheapest travel destination.

Whether you choose domestic or international travel, some of the most affordable destinations have some of the most delicious street food or small restaurants. You don't need to eat at fancy restaurants all the time to experience the culture and local food scene. There is also usually low cost local transportation available as well. There are often plenty of free attractions available as well.

Depending on where you are traveling to, some of the most incredible cities offer hostel accommodations as well as hotels. If the hotel prices are too high, hostels can be a more budget friendly option.

A month-by-month guide to the cheapest flights to international destinations

Airfare prices change regularly throughout the year, but if you know where to look, it's possible to find a bargain to even the most popular destinations — especially if you're able to be flexible with your travel dates.

TPG reached out to Skyscanner to trawl through their vast amount of airfare data and give you a comprehensive look at the destinations around the world that typically cost less to fly to. Whether you're looking to depart from the United States or from the United Kingdom, plenty of sweet spots can be found.

Below are destinations that are consistently priced low throughout the year and destinations that regularly pop up with cheaper airfares during specific months.

Which destinations are the cheapest to fly to year-round?

While certain destinations can be cheaper on average throughout the whole year, others fluctuate, and not always in the ways you might think.

For example, if you're based in the U.S. and dream of flying to Europe for your next vacation, the best prices for most European locations were in April, May and June, according to Skyscanner's data on the average cost of a return economy flight. This is true, according to that data, even though this time is normally considered a peak travel time for the region and coincides with the U.K. school holidays.

However, while you may be able to pick up cheaper airfare during this time, prices for hotels and attractions may be higher during these periods.

Meanwhile, the average return flights to London were at their lowest at the beginning of the year, between January and March. Note this can be a notoriously drizzly and cold time to visit the U.K. capital (though, let's face it, England isn't really known for its great weather at the best of times).

The next cheapest period to visit London from the U.S. was perhaps surprisingly between October and December. Again, this is during the colder months, but still great news for those looking for a potential Christmas escape to take advantage of some of the Thanksgiving and fall breaks in the U.S.

For travelers based in the U.K., we found airfares to destinations in Italy to be consistently among the top 10 cheapest throughout the year. Despite its popularity among British travelers, Greece didn't break the top 10 once for the cheapest average airfares.

Cheapest places to fly from January through March

Traveling from the us.

January through March saw the lowest average prices of the year for flights departing the U.S. to London and Paris, with the French capital coming in a smidgen cheaper to get to. If you take advantage of the convenient Eurostar links between these two European cities, you could easily hit both of these destinations during this period for less than you'd pay any other time.

If you decide to do both, we suggest returning to the U.S. from Paris to avoid the U.K.'s notoriously high fees and taxes on airfares.

Average airfare prices to Puerto Rico from the U.S. were among the cheapest during these months in 2022. January is also an ideal time to visit Puerto Rico, thanks to the dryer winter months with moderate temperatures and far less rainfall than you'll see during other times in the year.

Closer to home, this period is also a great time to visit Mexico , where you can enjoy much dryer and cooler temperatures.

Traveling from the UK

If you don't mind wrapping up to stay warm, you can bag plenty of great deals to Europe departing the U.K., but be warned that some places can be chilly during the winter months.

For example, Eindhoven, the Netherlands, can see temperatures dropping as low as 34 Fahrenheit (1.3 Celsius) in January and only just peaking over 50 Fahrenheit (10 Celsius) in March.

Riga, Latvia, sees even lower temperatures, regularly plummetting to around 24 Fahrenheit (-5 Celsius) between January and February and peaking at around 33 Fahrenheit (1 Celsius) in March.

If you're looking for sun, Palma, Mallorca, is your best bet. The first months of the year generally still see days filled with sunshine. It won't necessarily be hot enough to top up your tan and enjoy a beach break, though — temperatures mainly float around the 61 Fahrenheit (16 Celsius) mark.

Cheapest places to fly from April through June

If you're considering a European vacation , these months pulled up cheaper airfares than any other, according to Skyscanner data, with good average prices for Spain, France, Portugal and the U.K. While each of these locations will begin seeing sunnier weather throughout June, you can still expect blues skies and bouts of sunshine during April too.

It is, however, worth doing some research before you book — U.K. schools break for Easter in the first half of April and again at the beginning of June for the summer half-term break. During these times, you can expect many European locations to be busy with family vacations and often see soaring accommodation prices. If you can, we'd recommend booking outside of these weeks to save on both money and time spent queuing due to increased numbers of other tourists.

Looking for something more far-flung? Tokyo has great average airfare prices during the spring, and if you time it properly, you could also witness Japan's beautiful cherry blossom season, which typically peaks in early April.

This is one of the prime times to visit Italy and take in the sights before its summer hits full throttle in July, bringing with it almost prohibitively high temperatures. Visits between April and June are perfect for soaking up the sun, alfresco dining and diving into this country's rich history.

Sicily, in particular, is excellent at this time of the year. However, note that it might get a little too hot for some as June approaches, especially if this year's wildfires and extreme weather are anything to go by.

If Dubrovnik, Croatia, has been on your list for some time but now feels a little too in vogue and expensive, you could also get good prices on flights to Zadar . This charming seaside city is situated on the Dalmatian Coast and is known for its fantastic restaurant and dining scene, with an array of stunning nearby national parks.

Cheapest places to fly from July through September

For those yearning to visit Canada outside of its harsh winter periods, July through September can be an ideal time to enjoy a summer vacation. Toronto bursts to life during the Toronto Jazz Festival and Toronto Fringe Festival in July — perfect for culture vultures.

You can get good prices on flights to Mexico between July and September. While these months bring slightly cooler and more comfortable temperatures, they also mark Mexico's rainy season, typically from late August to September.

Conversely, if you've always had Peru on your bucket list, this can be a great time to visit.

It's the country's driest season — fantastic conditions if you plan to hike to Machu Picchu. According to Skyscanner's data, you can typically find good prices on flights to Peru during these months. However, note that if you plan to travel to Machu Picchu from Lima, you must either get a connecting flight to Cusco or take a long bus ride.

September can be one of the best periods to visit Ireland during its shoulder season. Along with good deals on airfare, you'll also typically see cheaper accommodation costs and fewer crowds. The weather can also be fairly mild during these months with good dry spells, though it likely won't be shorts and T-shirt weather.

Mid-August through to September also sees much milder weather in Italy and can be a preferable month to visit than July and August, which are the hottest months of the year and the most crowded with tourists.

Elsewhere in Europe, July onward is a great time to take advantage of good weather in France.

According to Skyscanner data, Rodez, France, is one of the cheapest places on average to fly to from the U.K. during these months. It also sees high temperatures and lots of sunshine. The mercury is typically around 77 Fahrenheit (25 Celsius) in July and August before dropping off to a more manageable 69.8 Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) average in September.

Cheapest places to fly from October through December

There are great prices on airfares to Mexico from October through December, and these months are also a particularly intriguing time to visit.

Mexico's Day of the Dead celebrations typically take place Nov. 1-2. The festival is an opportunity to honor deceased family members, and there is a wide array of celebrations throughout Mexico, making this a memorable and enlightening time to visit and learn about Mexican traditions.

If you keep your eyes peeled, it's also possible to get low-priced airfares to Iceland, allowing for a festive visit to Reykavik to take in the snow alongside a healthy jolt of Christmas spirit.

Visit London to see the city decorated for the festivities as it gears up for the holidays and New Year celebrations. Sure, it'll be cold and the weather occasionally unwieldy, but it's a magical time to visit the U.K. capital.

For U.K. travelers looking for an affordable winter getaway, cast your eyes toward Italy, where the weather, though much milder than in the earlier months of the year, is still quite the contrast to the climate at home if you pick the right destination.

For example, Sicily will feel much closer to the U.K. spring weather. Other areas, such as Milan or Venice, won't be quite as warm but still make for great locations for romantic winter getaways on the continent.

Bottom line

While airfare prices fluctuate, they don't always follow the expected patterns you might guess. Based on Skyscanner's data from last year, you might be surprised by how much cheaper certain destinations in some months compared to others — especially airfares to Europe from the United States during summer when one might expect higher costs.

Similarly, from the U.K., Italy is generally fairly cheap to fly to if you look in the right places. By looking further afield to places like Rodez, France, or Zadar in Croatia, you might even visit somewhere that's commonly overlooked by other tourists wishing to visit better-known cities such as Paris or Dubrovnik.

Kayak considered flights for travel in 2023 between July 2022 and November 2022 in order to determine the most budget-friendly destinations for you and your wallet. A total of 100 of the most clicked destinations with the lowest average price for flights and hotels were then analyzed, excluding outliers due to security concerns and travel restrictions. All prices are based on averages.

Mexico City  is the second-cheapest destination on the list at $696 for a flight and hotel

Looking to catch a cheap flight this year? Kayak , one of the world's leading travel search engines, shared with Travel + Leisure a list of the cheapest places to travel this year.

To determine the most wallet-friendly destinations, Kayak analyzed the searches for flights from Nov. 20, 2020, through Nov. 19, 2021, for travel between Jan. 1, 2022, and June 30, 2022. Kayak then considered the top 100 most-clicked destinations with the lowest average flight price, excluding outliers based on criteria such as travel restrictions and security concerns.

Unsurprisingly, Mexico makes the list of the cheapest places to travel in 2022. The country has long ranked as an affordable and easy-to-reach destination for many Americans; reasonably priced direct flights are abundant.

Within Mexico, San José del Cabo (in Baja California Sur), Puerto Vallarta, and Cancún come out on top as the cheapest places to fly, with January being the most affordable month to visit for each. Fortunately, January is nothing short of glorious in each of these beachy destinations — warm, balmy, and filled with rich colors, textures, and flavors to beat the winter blues.

Searching for a city break instead of a beach retreat? Mexico City, with its rich Aztec heritage and generous smattering of museums, is another affordable option in Mexico. May is the cheapest month to book a flight there.

Chicago, Illinois

Who wants to visit Chicago in winter? You will, once you see the rock-bottom prices you can score in January and all there is to do in this Midwest winter wonderland. Spend an afternoon on the Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Ribbon, then warm up with a slice of deep-dish pizza.

Colombia is a beloved travel destination for its rich history, vibrant culture, and mouthwatering food. It's also well priced against what many Americans are used to paying for, say, a fresh arepa and cup of Colombian coffee.

February is the least expensive month to fly to the country's capital, Bogotá. The weather here is chilly, but not too cold to stroll the painstakingly maintained Bogotá Botanical Garden, which dates back to 1955 and is filled with almost 20,000 plants (and costs just over $1 USD to enter).

In January, head to Cartagena, a port city on the country's Caribbean coast. You don't have to spend much to enjoy your time here — simply walking the picturesque streets is enough for most visitors.

Nashville, Tennessee

There's a reason bachelorette parties and reunions of every sort flock in droves to the Music City — it's not hard to have a boot-scootin' time on a budget. Mural-hopping is free, hot chicken will only set you back a few bucks, and there's lots of live music to be heard (free of cover charge) along Honky Tonk Highway . January is the cheapest month to book.

New York City, New York

New York City isn't known for being a cheap destination, but go in January and you'll get the best prices they've got. The city never sleeps, but it does slow down during the cold winter months — the perfect time for you to swoop in and take advantage of the decreased demand for flights and hotel rooms. Plus, there are plenty of free things to do in New York City , too.

Mexico isn't our only neighboring country with deals aplenty — Canada also makes for an easy getaway, with well-priced flights widely available from most of the U.S.

In Montréal, Quebec, the must-try food is the steamé — the city's take on a hot dog — served steamed in a side-loading bun (which is also steamed). It's the perfect food to gobble up during freezing February, when the flights are cheapest. Best of all, each delicious (and filling) hot dog will only set you back a couple of dollars.

February is also the cheapest month to fly to Toronto, Ontario. The weather may make you leery, but don't let it: During February, the annual installation of art and lights, known as the Toronto Light Festival (totally free), takes place in the walkable and historic Distillery District. It's also a good time for The Bentway Skate Trail under the Gardiner Expressway overpass, which will set you back only $5.

And while Vancouver, British Columbia, is gorgeous in the summertime, January is the cheapest month to fly there. Take the ferry for an affordable "tour" of the city from the water.

Atlanta, Georgia

Baltimore, Maryland

Head to Charm City this year to keep costs low and still have a memorable travel experience. San José, Costa Rica

Panama City, Panama

Panama City, the capital of Panama, is an impressively modern Central American destination framed by the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Panama Canal on another — best viewable from the Miraflores Locks. Tampa, Florida

1. Tour Toronto

Toronto is often considered the most multicultural city in the world, as over half of the city’s population is foreign-born. It’s an awesome, hip, artsy city. Stop along the way at the Columbia Icefield, an enormous icefield that feeds into eight glaciers. You can travel onto the 10,000-year-old Athabasca Glacier where you can hike around and even drink from the crystal-clear icy glacial water. If you’re not squeamish about heights, walk out to the cliff-top glass-floored Skywalk to get a spectacular panorama of the entire area. It’s easy to reach via an enormous bus or opt for a hiking tour where you can walk the glacier. There’s even a restaurant at the top that’s a bit expensive but worth at least a coffee for the view.

3. Road trip the Maritimes

Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick make up Canada’s east coast. If you want to spend your days hiking, relaxing by the ocean, and whale watching, this is the place to do it. Nova Scotia is sometimes considered the most beautiful province with rolling hills leading to lush green coastal cliffs over frothy shores. There are colorful little fishing villages like Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site considered one of the “Prettiest Painted Places in Canada.” It boasts delicious fresh seafood and friendly locals to chat with. Be sure to set aside a few days for an incredible road trip on the 298-kilometer (185-mile) Cabot Trail around Cape Breton and spend in the Highlands National Park where you can hike, camp, or fish. The east coast is stunning and sees very few tourists compared to other areas of the country.

If you’d rather hike an incredible yet challenging trail, the West Coast Trail is famous for its rugged beach and rainforest trails, man-made ladders through the trees, and rare wildlife.

It’s especially magical in December as it’s fully decorated with twinkling lights, snow-covered canopies, and lined with beautiful Christmas trees. In the warm weather, you can easily lose track of time wandering the streets admiring the flowers everywhere and colorful window shutters and storefronts. Don’t forget to sample the local ice ciders, head out for drinks on Grande Allée, and explore the streets below the stunning Château Frontenac.

Warm in the summer and mild in the winter, this glacial valley has some of the best weather in the entire country. It’s no wonder that this is where many Canadians spend their vacations. 13. See the iconic Niagara Falls

This is one of the most visited attractions on the entire continent. You can never imagine how big it is until you see it up close (you never envision so much mist either). To see it up close, on a boat tour and head out into the waterfalls (be prepared to get soaked). The chances of seeing a bear, elk, or deer are incredibly high (or you can tour the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, where you’re guaranteed to see them). Go hiking in Tombstone Territorial Park, soak in a mineral hot pool at the Takhini Hot Springs, or swing by the Sign Post Forest with its unique collection of over 77,000 signposts. Hardly anyone ever visits the Yukon as visitors tend to stick to the major cities in the south of the country. Because of that, you’ll find yourself surrounded by unspoiled nature.

Accommodation – Rates vary a lot depending on what city you’re staying in. On average, you’ll end up paying 35-45 CAD per night for a dorm room at a hostel. Expect to pay at least 90-120 CAD for a budget hotel room. Prices rise drastically in larger cities (notably Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa).

Airbnb is available across the country, rivaling budget hotels for price and convenience. Expect to pay an average of 60-90 CAD per night for a private room, while entire homes/apartments start around 100 CAD. Keep in mind that many smaller towns won’t have many options. However, there are usually locally owned hotels or motels that are generally quite cheap. Also, Airbnb prices can double (or triple) when not booked in advance so book early.

If camping is your thing, you’ll have plenty of options across the country. Prices vary depending on the grounds but expect to pay between 25-35 CAD per night for a basic pitch for two people. Many of the major national and provincial campgrounds sell out early in the summer, so be sure to book in advance during the peak season (June-August).

Food – Overall, the food here is a collage of dishes from other cultures, owing to the country’s diverse history of immigration. On the coasts, seafood is king while the prairies have more of a meat and potatoes diet. Be sure to sample some of Canada’s famous staples like poutine (fries with gravy and cheese curds), beaver tails (fried dough with maple syrup), Canadian bacon, and the oddly tasty ketchup chips.

Overall, food can be inexpensive if you stick to cooking for yourself, eating street food, and dining at cheap fast-food places. Cheap sandwich shops and fast food are your best bet, usually costing less than 13 CAD per meal.

Pizzas cost 15-20 CAD while Asian food is usually 10-15 CAD for a main dish.

A meal out at a casual restaurant costs 20-35 CAD for a main dish and a drink. Casual fine dining costs double that.

Beer is around 7 CAD while a latte/cappuccino is around 4.60 CAD. Bottled water costs 2 CAD.

If you cook your own food, expect to pay 50-75 CAD per week for groceries. This gets you basic staples like rice, pasta, veggies, and some meat or fish.

Backpacking Canada Suggested Budgets

How much does it cost to visit Canada? Well, it’s complicated. How much you spend largely depends on where in Canada you’re going to visit. For example, Canada’s biggest cities like Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver are considerably more expensive than the smaller ones (like Halifax, St. John’s, and Quebec City). The rural areas are even cheaper but getting around costs more as you may need to rent a car or take expensive buses.

On a backpacking budget, you should plan to spend around 70 CAD per day. This assumes you’re staying in a hostel dorm, cooking all your meals, using public transportation, limiting your drinking, and sticking to free activities like hiking and enjoying nature.

On a mid-range budget of 185 CAD per day, you can stay in a private Airbnb, take buses between destinations, eat out for most meals, enjoy a few drinks, and do more paid activities like visiting museums or taking a food or wine tour.

On a “luxury” budget of 310 CAD per day or more, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink more, rent a car to get around, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though, the sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in CAD.

Canada Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Given the size of Canada, there are plenty of ways to save money when you travel, but it varies by region (as I’ve been repeating). The general tips below can help but for specific tips visit our city guides!

• Stay with a local – As Canada is not the most budget-friendly destination owing to its inconvenient size, you’ll be able to cut down on your costs by using Couchsurfing . While not huge in smaller towns, you won’t have a hard time finding a host in the major cities. Just be sure to plan ahead during the summer as that is prime tourist season and it’s much harder to find a host then.
• Enjoy outdoor summer festivals – Since Canadians are stuck indoors all winter, they love to make the most of hot days by packing in lots of festivals into the short summer. Many of these, like Heritage Days (Edmonton), Kits Days (Vancouver), and Caribana (Toronto), are free. Check out upcoming events online by visiting the local tourism board’s website.
• Embrace the outdoors – A vast country with a relatively minuscule population leaves lots of potential for outdoor activities. Rent a pair of cross-country skis or snowshoes in the winter and enjoy the free use of many trails (versus expensive downhill lift passes). In the summer, you can bike, hike, kayak, or canoe. The cost of most equipment rentals is around 25-100 CAD for a day, and you can explore many areas at no further cost.
• Take the bus – Megabus runs in Ontario and Quebec (with connections into the U.S., including NYC). You can find tickets for as little as 1 CAD if booked in advance. This is the most affordable way to get between Toronto and Montreal (or into the U.S.).
• Use ride-sharing services – If you are going to be traveling between cities or provinces, keep an eye out for people sharing their vehicles. Craigslist, Couchsurfing, Kangaride, and Facebook all have ride-share pages for most major cities. If you can find someone traveling in your direction you can tag along and share the cost of gas.
• Eat street food – Every major Canadian city has plenty of street vendors selling hot dogs, sausages, and veggie dogs for as little as 3 CAD. You won’t find a cheaper lunch!
• Take a free walking tour – Most major cities in Canada offer free walking tours. They are a great way to explore and get a feel for each location and its history. Most last a couple of hours and don’t need to be booked in advance. Just remember to tip your guide at the end!
• Buy gas on native reserves – If you are driving around the country, keep your eyes peeled for native reserves — they are the cheapest places to buy gas in Canada. With lower taxes, you’ll find gas prices significantly cheaper than anywhere else. They are also great places to stop and experience the vibrant cultures of Canada’s First People.
• Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money. LifeStraw makes a reusable bottle with a built-in filter to ensure your water is always safe and clean.

Hostels are not that plentiful across Canada, but generally, they’re high quality and clean. Here are my suggested places to stay in Canada:

How to Get Around Canada

Public transportation – Within city limits you’ll find great public transportation networks. Toronto and Montreal are the only two cities in Canada with subway systems (although Vancouver has SkyTrain), but even the smallest Canadian cities have extensive bus routes. It usually costs about 3.25 CAD for a one-way ticket.

Larger cities have passes designed for tourists to make the most of the metro system. For example, Toronto has a daily pass for unlimited travel for 13.50 CAD.

Bus – There’s no singular country-wide bus system here. Instead, regional operators vary per location. Megabus is the cheapest option when it comes to traveling between cities in Ontario and Quebec. Fares can be as low as 1 CAD if booked in advance. Red Arrow is primarily an Alberta coach line. On the east coast, Maritime Bus is the main coach company (except in Newfoundland where it’s DRL Group).

Toronto to Ottawa costs about 30-50 CAD with Flixbus, while Ottawa to Montreal is around 35-50 CAD. A longer ride — like the 13-hour drive from Calgary to Vancouver — costs around 125-165 CAD.

Train – There is a train service (VIA Rail) that runs from coast to coast and is very scenic, albeit not cheap. Many train routes are currently suspended or running with limited space due to COVID-19, meaning that journeys take even longer. It takes over 24 hours to get from Halifax to Ottawa, costing about 150-170 CAD. On the other hand, shorter routes like between Montreal and Quebec City (a 3.5-hour journey) are more affordable and start at 36 CAD.

Flying – As your last alternative, you can fly, but since the country has only two major airlines (WestJet and Air Canada) prices are often high. Round-trip flights from Toronto to Vancouver usually start at around 200 CAD when booked early but they can easily cost triple that price. Round-trip from Ottawa to Calgary is around 270 CAD, but again, this is when booked in advance. Expect to pay at least double that price if you don’t book early.

Overall, flying is worthwhile only if you want to see specific cities and have limited time. For shorter routes (like Montreal to Ottawa) you’ll save a lot of money if you just take the bus or train.

Car Rental – If you’re going between provinces or staying a while in the country, consider renting a car for 35-50 CAD per day. This is one of the best, most convenient ways to get around the country — especially if you’re interested in getting out of the cities and into Canada’s wilderness (ideally if you have someone to share the cost with too).

When to Go to Canada

Since Canada is such a large country, climate and temperature vary drastically from coast to coast. Canada has very defined seasons, and winter can be harsh and long in some places. For example, winters in the Northern Territories begin early and end late, and places like Newfoundland and Labrador can experience snow until late May.

On the other hand, winter in the Canadian Rockies is epic and people from all over the world flock to British Columbia and Alberta to hit the slopes around Whistler, Banff, and Revelstoke. Prepare for cold temperatures, though. In some places, like on the prairies, it can get as cold as -40°C (-40°F). In short, only visit in the winter if you’re planning to do winter sports.

Summer in Canada is beautiful, but it’s also the busiest time of year. June to the end of September is the main tourist season, with inflated prices and large crowds. On the other hand, the temperatures are lovely during this time, often in the high 20s°C (70s°F). There are music festivals galore and it’s a great time to hike, bike, and explore the Great Lakes.

Shoulder season is also a fantastic time to visit Canada, although spring (March-June) can be quite wet. Fall (September-October) is highly recommended, as temperatures are still warm enough and the autumn foliage is really something special. Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces are well worth an autumn trek.

How to Stay Safe in Canada

Canada is a safe place to backpack and travel — even if you’re traveling solo, and even as a solo female traveler. Violent attacks are rare and tend to be confined to certain areas (generally where drug and gang violence are a problem). You may encounter petty crime, like theft, around popular tourist landmarks, though that isn’t super common. Nevertheless, always keep an eye on your belongings, especially while taking public transportation, just to be safe.

Solo female travelers should feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

If visiting in the winter, dress warmly. It gets so cold here that people literally freeze to death so take precautions and always keep an eye on the forecast.

If you’re going out hiking, always check the weather beforehand and ensure you have enough water. Bring sunscreen and a hat too. It can get humid here!

Canada’s cannabis legalization has a whole lot of rules and restrictions. The CBC has a great outline on everything you need to know if you’re thinking of consuming cannabis while in Canada.

When you've had your fill of nature, head to nearby wineries or test Lady Luck at the casinos.

Referred to as the "small city with a big backyard," Whitehorse – the capital of Canada's Yukon territory – shines with all of its outdoor activities. Explore Miles Canyon, which is accessible from Whitehorse on foot (a nearly 10-mile loop trail connects the city directly to this natural wonder). After, head north to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, where you'll find all kinds of animals, including arctic foxes, elk, muskox and bison. Even though this region gets notoriously cold, you might want to time your visit around the first couple of weeks of winter for a chance to witness the northern lights.

A trip to Europe may not be in your budget, but a visit to Québec City could be. This Canadian city charms visitors with its picturesque centuries-old buildings that make up Old Québec – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, the aromas of freshly baked bread and brewing espresso fill the cobblestone streets of the Quartier Petit-Champlain with the essence of Paris. Once you've gotten your fill of the city, take a trip to Montmorency Falls Park to marvel at its 272-foot-tall waterfall. Plan your visit for winter when the city comes alive with twinkling lights, festivals and cold-weather activities – just remember to pack your down jacket .

Take adventure travel up a notch with a visit to Whistler. In winter, this resort town in British Columbia (about 75 miles north of Vancouver) boasts everything from cross-country skiing and snowboarding to bobsled rides and bungee jumping. Home to rolling green hills, sandy beaches, red sandstone cliffs and a delicious bounty of seafood (this is where PEI mussels come from, after all), Prince Edward Island is the place to travel for a relaxing respite from Canada's more adventure-driven destinations. When you're not hiking the trails at Prince Edward Island National Park, perfect your swing at one of the island's golf courses or visit the Green Gables Heritage Place, where the 1908 novel, "Anne of Green Gables" was inspired. And be sure to keep an eye out for PEI's seal population (four kinds call the island home either full or part time).

This UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses nearly 700 square miles of land on Newfoundland's west coast. Its top activity is undoubtedly hiking through the Tablelands. Here, you'll traverse exposed earth mantle, a rust-colored landscape that was created millions of years ago by a collision of tectonic plates. Also save time for a boat ride on Western Brook Pond, which is a glacier-carved, landlocked fjord that features cascading waterfalls measuring 2,000 feet. After getting a taste of nature, learn about the region's history at the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse.

Montréal is a city of juxtaposition: Skyscrapers rub elbows with Old Montréal's 17th-century architecture while the familiar sounds of English intermingle with the foreign buzz of French – the official language of Québec province. Visit Old Montréal to get a taste of Europe (think: beautiful architecture and cobblestone streets), including its own Notre-Dame Basilica, a grand Gothic Revival-style church that offers self-guided tours along with an evening sound and light show. Then head to modern attractions, such as the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts. Meanwhile, if you're visiting during the warmer months, don't miss out on the Montréal Botanical Garden and the scenic Mount Royal Park.

While Montréal and Québec City honor Canada's French roots, Victoria pays tribute to the country's British heritage. Many pay a visit to Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, for afternoon tea, a tour of the beautiful Parliament Buildings or a history lesson at the Royal BC Museum. Others are interested in visiting Vancouver Island's wineries to sample local vinos. Meanwhile, animal lovers enjoy the abundance of marine wildlife that call the waters surrounding Victoria home. In fact, there are nearly 80 orca whales in Victoria's waters. What's more, since Victoria is one of the most sustainable urban destinations in North America, visitors can feel good about the impact of their trip.   

"Big" doesn't even begin to describe this Ontario city. With cultural pockets like Greektown, Little India and Koreatown all within city limits, Toronto has the ability to transport visitors around the globe. Take it all in with a ride up the 1,815-foot-tall CN Tower, or enjoy a quintessentially Canadian experience at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Then, head to the St. Lawrence Market to sample gourmet goodies before checking out the nearby Harbourfront Centre. The star of this national park on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island is the world-famous Cabot Trail – one-third of which runs through the park. As you drive the winding highway, which is considered one of the world's most scenic drives, you'll pass forested river canyons, rural fishing villages and plenty of lookout points for admiring Nova Scotia's serene landscape. Prefer to explore the park on your own two feet? There are 26 hiking trails to choose from, as well as opportunities for kayaking, mountain climbing, camping and more.

Located a little more than 80 miles northwest of Montréal in Québec's Laurentian Mountains, Mont-Tremblant is best known for its skiing, specifically Mont Tremblant Ski Resort, which occupies the highest peak in the mountain range. But warm-weather visitors are equally enchanted by its Parc national du Mont-Tremblant, which boasts six rivers and 400 lakes and streams, not to mention countless hiking trails and beaches. Want to make a week of it? Cedar Point, Ohio, is about a three-hour drive from Mason and came in a close second, with a daily average ticket price for a family of four at $180.

Mexico City, Mexico

While Mexico has a long list of popular travel destinations , we find this North American city to be a great bang for your buck. There are plenty of historical sites to see throughout the area, including a host of world-class museums and amazing art centers in Mexico City with inexpensive admission fees. Plus, the exchange rate is more than 18 pesos to $1.

In particular, the historic city of Colonia del Sacramento is a phenomenal place for history buffs to revel in relics of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The well-preserved urban landscape has landed the city on the World Heritage List, offering historic walking tours of the cobbled streets flanked with colorful homes, restaurants and shops. In the warmer seasons, residents throw block parties, at which you can enjoy homemade Uruguayan street food. And even if you're dining at restaurants, an entire day of eating could cost you less than $10.

Lodging options range from small boutiques for about $50 per night to hotel chains, such as Sheraton, for around $160 per night. Round-trip flight prices tend to average about $540. And since the country is in the Southern Hemisphere, their summer high season is December through February, which makes it one of the best travel destinations during winter . San Juan, Puerto Rico

Hotels will cost most during peak winter and spring break periods. You'll also want to avoid the late summer and early fall because of hurricane season. But weather during the rest of the year is downright beautiful.

Bangkok, Thailand

Book a trip to the mystical country of Thailand, one of the most underrated travel destinations in the world. Known as the Land of Smiles, this Southeast Asian trip of a lifetime is complete with relaxing, adventurous, culinary and cultural experiences, all of which are totally budget-friendly. The most affordable city when it comes to travel is Thailand's capital of Bangkok. It's a city sometimes associated with its backpacking scene , however according to a luxury-on-a-budget survey by money.co.uk, Bangkok was the cheapest city in the world for luxury car rentals, Michelin-starred meals and five-star hotel stays, with the cheapest luxury hotels starting at $110. As far as getting there, we found flights for $860 round trip from the East Coast in the late spring (you'll want to avoid visiting during the steamy mid-summer months).

Once there, travelers can take advantage of other affordable luxuries, such as authentic Thai spas (at $10 an hour), incredible local cuisine for just a few dollars and a tuk-tuk ride (motorized three-wheel rickshaws popular around the city) for just $1.50 to see the golden temples that line the Chao Phraya River.

Toronto, Canada

Cosmopolitan Toronto, one of the most popular destinations in Canada , is just a 90-minute trip from 60% of the United States, so it's easy to reach for many vacationers. Plus, the U.S. dollar is strong against Canadian currency, so it will feel like the whole city is on sale. And according to Kayak, Toronto is one of the top cities for great hotel and airfare deals, with overnight stays averaging $202 a night and airfare about $375 round trip.

While you're there, head to the top of the CN Tower to take in the amazing views. Then, head to the neighboring Ripley's aquarium where you can ride the moving sidewalk through a shark tank. Both are included in the Toronto CityPASS, which features admission to five top attractions for a discounted rate and starts at just $56. The warmer months are peak season to visit Toronto, but they're also when you can take advantage of the city's most notable free attraction: the downtown beaches of one of the Great Lakes , Lake Ontario. Cape Town, South Africa

South Africa is without a doubt a bucket list destination  and was named one of the best places to travel in 2023 . But can it be affordable? We think so! If flying to South Africa has seemed too prohibitive to keep you from visiting the Rainbow Nation, think again. Recently, both Delta and United have introduced non-stop flights to the country, creating competition on the routes and in turn, making airfare cheaper than we've ever seen—especially in the off-peak seasons of late spring and late fall, when rates dip well below $900 round trip. After you arrive, the exchange rate of nearly 18 rand to the dollar means that most hotels can cost $100 or less. Gourmet restaurants and award-winning wines are also affordable at every budget.

Head to Table Mountain and overlook the city of Cape Town. Visit Robben Island and take in its rich multi-layered history.
