Book your charter Kalka Shimla Toy Train with a steam engine with us. This is one of the best and the most interesting ways to have the colonial experience. This age-old KC 20 steam engine was brought here from Scotland in 1905 and was withdrawn from service in 1971. Then restored in 2003 when the railway track completed its one hundred years. Your companion on this journey is Sumit Raj , the writer of A Journey to Shimla by Toy Train .

Kalka Shimla Toy Train is a marvel example of engineering introduced in the hills of India. The British built this track to move the summer capital, every year, to the hills and then take it back. This steam train goes for twenty-three kilometers and terminates.

The British built Kalka Shimla Toy Train in 1903 and they brought this steam engine KC 520 from England. The engine kept hauling boogies till 1971 when they withdrew it from the services. In 2003 KSR completed its one hundred years and the authorities restored it to bring it back. Since then it has been running on request.

Our founder Sumit Raj is your companion on this journey. He is the writer of his famous book – A Journey to Shimla by Toy Train for which, in 2011, he walked from Kalka to Shimla and collected a large number of stories and information.

A twenty-three kilometers journey on a Charted Train from Shimla Railway Station Kalka to Kaithalighat.

Guided by Sumit Raj, a local writer who has penned a number of books on Shimla.

Transport from Kaithalighat and back to Shimla.

Start from Shimla Railway Station.

Our cars will pick you up from your hotel to drive to Shimla Railway Station from where we board the Steam train. The train leaves in time and leads through the winding curves, tunnels, and bridges. Here begins the fairytale-like journey. The landscape keeps changing, every moment and suddenly it enters a dark tunnel. By the time you realize the effect of the tunnel, it emerges on the other end with a new vista in front of you, perhaps this time on the other side of the compartment.

The Journey

It keeps going and when a railway station arrives, either you see the Station Master standing with a green flag in his hand, that allows the driver to go on. Otherwise, a stopover is required, perhaps because the line ahead is not clear and some other train from the opposite direction is on its way. This gives you sufficient time to pop out of the train and click some nice photos of the area. Also, you may choose to go with your Guide to the Station Master’s office and learn about Neil’s communication system that still works on this age-old railway track.

The Journey Continues

It will not stop at every station but every station does have a story to tell. So, after one and half hours the journey finally ends at Kaithalighat from where the cars pick you up to bring you back to Shimla.

History of Kalka Shimla Toy Train

The history of the toy train dates back to the late 19th century when Shimla became the summer capital of the British Empire in India. The British officials and their families used to escape the scorching heat of the plains and spend their summers in the cool and pleasant climate of Shimla. However, reaching Shimla was not an easy task. The only way to get there was by road or by horse-drawn carts, which were slow, risky, and uncomfortable.

Therefore, the British decided to build a railway line that would connect Kalka to Shimla and make the journey faster and safer. The construction of the railway line began in 1898 and was completed in 1903. It was a remarkable feat of engineering as it involved laying down 96 km of track on a steep gradient with more than 100 tunnels, 800 bridges, and 900 curves.

The longest tunnel on the route is near Barog station and is 1.14 km long. It takes about three minutes to cross it. The toy train was inaugurated by Lord Curzon , the then Viceroy of India, who enjoyed the first ride from Kalka to Shimla. Since then, the toy train has been running on a daily basis, except for some maintenance breaks in between. The toy train has witnessed many historical events and personalities over the years. Some of them are:

Mahatma Gandhi traveled by the toy train in 1921 and 1931 to meet with Lord Irwin and Lord Willingdon respectively.

Lord Mountbatten traveled by the toy train in 1947 to announce the Partition of India from Shimla.

Jawaharlal Nehru traveled by the toy train in 1948 to attend a conference in Shimla.

Indira Gandhi traveled by the toy train in 1972 to sign the Shimla Agreement with Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Shimla - Kalka Railway Narrow Gauge Train

Click here for a guide to the Shimla Delhi Train Services

One of the highlights of a visit to Shimla is the spectacular train journey from the flat plains of Kalka to the heights of Shimla. This narrow gauge train slow creeps up the 96km route at an average climb of 3%, almost unheard of by rail routes. The Final station at Shimla is 1420 meters higher than the station at Kalka. The Kalka-Shimla railway line snakes around the sides of mountains providing stunning views of the Himalayan foothills.

Shimla - Kalka Railway Information

The entire route is preciously balanced on the side of massive hills with a staggering 806 bridges to cross and 103 tunnels to pass through. No wonder the Kalka-Shimla railway was called the British Jewel of the Orient when constructed in 1903. In 2008 the entire railway was given UNESCO World Heritage Site statues.

Shimla train

The mini train from Shimla heads down the mountains

This wondrous feat of engineering is not just a novelty of the region. The railway is the fastest and safest means to reach Shimla from Delhi (via Kalka). The progression of the train journey can be measured by counting the large painted numbers on the side of the tunnels. The first tunnel is at Kalka and 108 later the narrow gauge train pulls into Shimla train station.

Features of the Shimla - Kalka Railway

The Barog Tunnel (tunnel 33) is longest tunnel of the railway and is shrouded in misfortune and tragedy. The 1143 meter long tunnel of was designed and constructed by the British engineer T. Barog. During the construction of the tunnel Barog decided to reduce the time by digging the tunnel from both ends. There was a slight miscalculation and the two ends never met.

Another twist on the Shimla railway

The British government were infuriated by this massive mistake and humiliated Barog by fining him a single rupee. The embarrassment was too much for the already distraught Barog and he committed suicide close to his failed tunnel. Spare a thought for him as you pass through the two and half minutes of darkness at tunnel 33.

Shimla railway

There are 103 tunnels along the railway

The most architectural complex bridge is bridge number 226 which spans a deep valley that is enclosed on two sides by steep peaks. This bridge was constructed in five stages with each level having its own stone arched tier. The bridge is an elegant piece of architecture but is difficult to see from the train carriages. The original cost for the railway was Rs 8,678,500 and the first public train service along the route was in 1903.

The high maintenance and running costs were crippling to the company who had originally constructed the railway and the entire rail network had to be nationalised in 1906 managed by the British/India government. The government bought the entire rail route for Rs17,107,748 in 1906. Since 1906 the railway has owned by the state.

Kalka Shimla Railway: Toy Train Travel Guide

kalka shimla train journey video

Taking a trip on the historic UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train is like traveling back in time. The railway, built by the British in 1903 to provide access to their summer capital of Shimla, provides one of the most scenic toy train journeys in India . It enlivens passengers as it gradually winds its way steeply upwards along the narrow track, through rugged mountains and pine forests.

The train connects Kalka, just north of Chandigarh, to Shimla in Himachal Pradesh state . The captivating train route runs for 96 kilometers (60 miles) through 20 railway stations, 103 tunnels, 800 bridges, and an incredible 900 curves.

The longest tunnel, which stretches for more than a kilometer, is near the main railway station at Barog. The most spectacular scenery occurs from Barog to Shimla. The train's speed is greatly restricted by the steep gradient that it has to climb, but this allows for plenty of fascinating sightseeing along the way. Be prepared for a five to six hour train ride though!

Tourist Train Services

Four regular tourist train services run on the Kalka Shimla railway. These are:

  • Shivalik Deluxe Express -- a premium express train with carpet, wide glass windows, cushioned seats, relaxing music, and upgraded toilets. It fits 120 passengers. Food is provided, and the train only has one stop at Barog.
  • Himalayan Queen -- a standard train, with first and second class carriages. Food isn't provided but can be purchased at the nine stations it stops at along the way. Some of the stops are for 5-10 minutes, so this train is the most suitable for those who like to get out and explore. You'll be able to take plenty of photos.
  • Rail Motor Car -- uniquely resembles a bus from the time of the Second World War. It's got a transparent roof, and fits only 14 passengers. It's also an express service, with food provided. There is one stop, at Barog. It can be difficult to get tickets though.
  • Vistadome Him Darshan Express -- a new train with seven carriages featuring glass roofs and modified windows to provide panoramic views. It is the only train that's air-conditioned.

To have the most comfortable experience, choose either the Shivalik Deluxe Express, Rail Motor Car, or Vistadome trains. Unless you travel in first class, common complains about the Himalayan Queen are overcrowding, hard bench seats, dirty toilets and nowhere to store luggage.

Journey beyond destinations: Kalka-Shimla Vista Dome train

Team Himachal Scape

Shimla, Aug 24,

Indian Railways has officially launched regular service of Vista Dome trains on the historic Kalka-Shimla railway line, poised to become a significant highlight of Shimla’s tourism landscape. Blending historical significance with modern luxury, these trains are expected to drive tourism and bolster economic growth in the region. This initiative represents a major leap forward for Indian Railways and the broader tourism sector, enhancing the appeal of one of India’s most scenic destinations.

Following the successful testing phase, the introduction of Vista Dome trains is capturing the attention of both domestic and international tourists. These distinctively designed trains, equipped with panoramic windows, are transforming the journey itself into a central part of the travel experience, offering unparalleled views of one of India’s most picturesque regions and rail routes.

The Vista Dome trains, comprising a seven-coach setup, are engineered to maximize the viewing experience for passengers. Each coach is fitted with expansive, panoramic windows that provide breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys. This immersive travel experience is expected to attract a new generation of tourists who seek unique and visually captivating journeys. The Kalka-Shimla route, known for its stunning landscapes, is now even more enticing with the Vista Dome service.

Positive Impact on Local Tourism

Industry experts predict that the introduction of Vista Dome trains will have a substantial positive impact on Shimla’s tourism industry and its surrounding areas. Local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and transport services, are optimistic about the anticipated increase in visitor numbers due to this new addition.

Local travel agencies and taxi operators in Shimla have expressed enthusiasm about the potential rise in business. They view the Vista Dome trains as a major attraction that will contribute significantly to the local economy. Some have even suggested that the introduction of special night trains could further boost tourist traffic.

The Kalka-Shimla railway, operational since 1903, is a key part of India’s railway heritage, having transitioned from steam to diesel engines by the 1970s. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008, this historic line remains a must-visit for travelers. The introduction of Vista Dome trains adds a contemporary dimension to this storied route, offering tourists a fresh and immersive way to experience the breathtaking beauty that has captivated visitors for over a century.

The Vista Dome coaches, initially introduced on a trial basis in December 2018, quickly gained popularity. The success of these trains highlights the growing demand for travel experiences that emphasize natural beauty and immersive journeys.

Travel industry experts believe that the launch of Vista Dome trains on the Kalka-Shimla route will resonate with global travel trends, particularly as scenic and immersive journeys become increasingly popular. The success of these trains in Shimla could inspire similar projects in other regions with underutilized scenic routes.

For international travelers, the Vista Dome trains offer a novel way to explore India’s natural beauty, enhancing the country’s appeal as a travel destination. This aligns with the global shift toward sustainable and experiential travel, where tourists seek eco-friendly and culturally rich experiences.
