Kalka-Shimla Toy Train: One of the Most Beautiful Railway Journeys on Earth

The Himalayan Queen Toy Train

India Writer

Step back in time aboard the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that connects the Indian plains to the ‘Queen of Hills ,’ Shimla. Built in 1903, this toy train ride is one of India’s most incredible feats of engineering covering a staggering 102 tunnels, 864 bridges and 919 stunning curves.

Spanning some 60 miles, the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train is said to be one of the most scenic railway journeys in India. And, with a route that encompasses a vast display of awe-inspiring landscapes, it’s easy to see why. This journey runs on a narrow gauge from Kalka to Shimla, treating passengers with breathtaking views of rugged mountains, lush pine forests, waterfalls, valleys and picture-perfect hill stations along the way that will definitely tempt you to disembark and bask in their beauty. The whole journey takes about five and a half hours.

The Himalayan Queen toy train at Shimla railway station

Soon after the first Anglo-Gurkha war, Shimla (then, called as Simla) was established by the British. In 1864, the town became the summer capital of the British Empire and even served as the British army’s headquarters. But the only snag was connectivity – to reach Shimla, the only mode of transportation was a bullock cart that traversed through mountainous terrain, which was unsteady, dangerous and took a long amount of time. So, for easy and quick access to Shimla, the Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge was started in 1903 and was referred as the ‘British Jewel of the Orient’. The maiden journey of the train was taken by the then Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. And since then, the train has been operating regularly and has become an iconic symbol of Shimla that is cherished by locals and tourists alike.

The Kalka-Shimla train allows passengers to see mesmerizing sights and hamlets that they would have otherwise never witnessed. The route starts from Kalka, located in the Panchkula district of Haryana, from zero metres, winding its way upwards along the narrow track. At 656 metres, the train starts climbing uphill, passing through the 18 stations and reaches Shimla, located at an elevation of 2, 076 metres in the lap of the Himalayas. As the train ascends through steep mountains and curves, its speed slows down.

The 18 stations it stops at are: Taksal (6 km), Gumman (11 km), Koti (17 km), Sonwara (27 km), Dharampur (33 km), Kumarhatti (39 km), Barog (43 km), Solan (47 km), Salogra (53 km), Kandaghat (59 km), Kanoh (65 km), Kathleegat (73 km), Shoghi (78 km), Taradevi (85 km), Jutoh (90 km), Summer Hill (93 km) and finally, Shimla (96 km). At every station, there are tea and snack stalls, so passengers can relish in the local food along the way. The journey is magical, to say the least.

The highlight of the journey is Barog station, which has the longest tunnel (tunnel 33) on the route, stretching 1, 143.61 metres. Also, bridge number 226 is an architectural marvel that passes over a deep valley surrounded by steep hills on both sides. However, it is difficult to see this bridge from the carriage.

History of Kalka Shimla Toy Train

When India was under the influence of Britishers, Shimla (earlier called as Simla) was officially declared as the summer capital of the British Empire. During that period, there was no good connectivity to reach Shimla. Whatever route was available, it was risky, dangerous and used to consume a lot of time.

So, to provide an easy and quick access to Shimla, Britishers started the Kalka Shimla narrow-gauge train in November 1903. Lord Curzon enjoyed the first train ride and since then, the train has been running on an everyday basis, except for the maintenance breaks in between.

Kalka Shimla Railway: Toy Train Travel Guide

kalka shimla train journey video

Taking a trip on the historic UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train is like traveling back in time. The railway, built by the British in 1903 to provide access to their summer capital of Shimla, provides one of the most scenic toy train journeys in India . It enlivens passengers as it gradually winds its way steeply upwards along the narrow track, through rugged mountains and pine forests.

The train connects Kalka, just north of Chandigarh, to Shimla in Himachal Pradesh state . The captivating train route runs for 96 kilometers (60 miles) through 20 railway stations, 103 tunnels, 800 bridges, and an incredible 900 curves.

The longest tunnel, which stretches for more than a kilometer, is near the main railway station at Barog. The most spectacular scenery occurs from Barog to Shimla. The train's speed is greatly restricted by the steep gradient that it has to climb, but this allows for plenty of fascinating sightseeing along the way. Be prepared for a five to six hour train ride though!

The Kalka-Shimla Toy Train, a cherished gem among India's iconic railway journeys, offers a picturesque route through the Himalayan Queen Railway. This UNESCO World Heritage Site connects Kalka to Shimla, the charming hill station, allowing travelers to embark on an unforgettable journey.

In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the travel experience, booking details, and timings of this remarkable Kalka-Shimla Toy Train, ensuring that your tours in India include a ride on this historic railway.

What is the history of the Kalka Shimla Toy Train, a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

The history of the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a fascinating journey in itself. It dates back to the colonial era when the British sought to establish a connection between the then summer capital of India, Shimla, and the rest of the country. The construction of this remarkable narrow-gauge railway line began in 1898 and was completed in 1903, making it a testament to engineering marvels of its time.

The main purpose of the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train was to provide a convenient mode of transportation for British officials and their families who flocked to Shimla to escape the scorching heat of the Indian plains during the summer months. This railway line featured several impressive engineering feats, including the construction of 102 tunnels and 864 bridges, which allowed the train to navigate the steep and rugged terrain of the Himalayas.

Over the years, the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train has not only served as a vital transportation link but has also become a symbol of Shimla's colonial heritage and a popular tourist attraction. History of Kalka Shimla Toy Train

The history of the toy train dates back to the late 19th century when Shimla became the summer capital of the British Empire in India. The British officials and their families used to escape the scorching heat of the plains and spend their summers in the cool and pleasant climate of Shimla. However, reaching Shimla was not an easy task. The only way to get there was by road or by horse-drawn carts, which were slow, risky, and uncomfortable.

Therefore, the British decided to build a railway line that would connect Kalka to Shimla and make the journey faster and safer. The construction of the railway line began in 1898 and was completed in 1903. It was a remarkable feat of engineering as it involved laying down 96 km of track on a steep gradient with more than 100 tunnels, 800 bridges, and 900 curves.

The longest tunnel on the route is near Barog station and is 1.14 km long. It takes about three minutes to cross it. The toy train was inaugurated by Lord Curzon , the then Viceroy of India, who enjoyed the first ride from Kalka to Shimla. Since then, the toy train has been running on a daily basis, except for some maintenance breaks in between. The toy train has witnessed many historical events and personalities over the years. Some of them are:

Mahatma Gandhi traveled by the toy train in 1921 and 1931 to meet with Lord Irwin and Lord Willingdon respectively.

Lord Mountbatten traveled by the toy train in 1947 to announce the Partition of India from Shimla.

Jawaharlal Nehru traveled by the toy train in 1948 to attend a conference in Shimla.

Indira Gandhi traveled by the toy train in 1972 to sign the Shimla Agreement with Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

The train slowly winds it’s way through the upward track from Kalka to Shimla, through rugged mountains, waterfalls, tunnels and pine forests, crossing on its way jungles of wild flowers and beautiful bridges. The scenery is simply breathtaking.

Since the train ascends through steep mountains, it goes at a very slow pace. This gives plenty of time for the on-boarded passengers to sync in the glorious beauty of nature that they are passing by. At curves and nearing stations the train speed gets very slow. It gives a nice opportunity for the passengers to hop out, take a walk along the track besides the train, snap some beautiful pictures and then hop-in back!! (Yes, we did that, be careful when you try it).

History of Kalka Shimla Toy Train

When India was under British rule, Shimla was the summer capital of the British empire. There were no good routes to reach Shimla at this point of time. Whatever mountain route was available, it was very rickety and dangerous. It also used to take a lot of time to travel because of the bad condition of the route. In November 1903, the Kalka Shimla narrow gauge train was started to provide easy access from the plains to Shimla. Driven by a steam engine, the train passed through 109 tunnels and took 7 hrs to reach Shimla.

The then viceroy Lord Curzon boarded the train on the first ride from Kalka to Shimla. Since then, the train has been complying daily, except for few maintenance breaks in between. The stations still use the old clocks to sync timings between them. Most of these stations are located besides picturesque bridges that provide an easy access from the mountain tracks to the stations. Sunlight is still used to illuminate the dark tunnels where the light is reflected through the mirrors.

I did watch one 21 minute youtube video, and even with lots of editing, which I’m sure included deleting parts that looked the same, the scenery mostly looked the same, just some hills/mountains and greenery, and passing a simple station now and then, and was not interesting for the most part. Maybe it wasn’t a good video. Do you pass lots of interesting views? Anyone can provide links that show me how beautiful and interesting it is, and not so repetitive? Thanks.

It very much depends on how the video was captured. From my personal experience I can tell you it’s a unique and beautiful journey. As the train passes through the mountain track, sometimes you see valleys covered with wild flowers, sometimes green forests, sometimes waterfalls. The train passes through some 100 natural tunnels and they are also very beautiful. The cute little stations are something I like actually. And so is the view of the distant mountains. I haven’t seen any videos of this journey yet. I guess it is something to be experienced.

Your write up reminds me of my toy train journey. One of the best summer vacation trip it was and thanks for sharing the history behind. I did not know about the old clock

wow..even i traveled on toy train as a kid and still cherishing the fond memories

Even before reading, just looking at the second pic, I knew that this is what I definitely want to do. It must be so much fun to ride in one of these old-fashioned carriages through the amazing greenery. I can easily see why the Kalka Shimla Toy Train ride is one of the most scenic train journeys in India. Hop off to take a photo and hop on back sounds almost like childhood shenanigans. Thank you for sharing.

Definitely. Aren’t you getting excited? Think how much excitement it would be to really ride this train 🙂

This looks really cool! I would love to experience this one day. 🙂 The views from the train must be incredible.

They are simply breathtaking

I love travelling by train and this trip looks amazing. The toy train sounds like something out of a fairytale and the scenery is stunning. When I get to Shimla one day, I really want to do this trip.

In my opinion, anyone going to Shimla must take this trip

Wow so cool, I’d love to ride this sometime. I typically don’t like slow trains, but with these views I’d appreciate having more opportunities to admire the view and snap some photos. Thanks for sharing about this gem!

Thats the point. If this train were to rush through the scenery at a 100 kilometers per hour speed , you wont be able to admire the breathtaking beauty around for sure

I have heard of the train before, but I really didn’t realise that it was that slow you could actually hop off take a picture and get back on. What I liked about your post, is you took the time to share the history as well. Really Great Post.

Thank you. Actually at patches it is faster, not this slow all the way. But when it comes to the curves on the mountain terrains, that is where it goes extremely slow

but at least the slowness, enabled great photo moments

Q8: Is it necessary to book accommodations in advance?

Answer : During peak seasons (summer and winter holidays), it’s highly recommended to book accommodations in advance to avoid last-minute hassles and inflated prices. However, in the off-season, you might get good deals even with on-the-spot bookings.

Conclusion & Personal Experience:

The journey aboard the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train is more than just a means of transport—it’s a time capsule that transports its passengers back to a bygone era.
