Benefits and perks

The Journey Student Rewards from Capital One requires you to have at least average credit to qualify. If you can meet that requirement, it's worth considering this card. Here's why it might be a good fit:

A potential credit line increase

If you make your payments on time, you can be automatically considered for a credit limit increase in as little as six months. Gaining more available credit may also give your credit score a boost , assuming you continue to only use a small amount of it.

A rewards boost for on-time payments

The card's baseline rewards rate is 1% cash back on all purchases, but you can earn an additional 0.25% (for a total of 1.25%) cash back in each billing cycle if your account is not past due on the last day of that cycle. That's below the industry-standard flat rate of 1.5% back , but it's still decent for a student card. If you're the type of person who always turns things in on time, from assignments to bills, this deal can help you save even more. On top of that, you can earn 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, the issuer's online travel-booking portal.

A credit monitoring tool

You can track your credit score with CreditWise, a free app from Capital One available for iPhone and Android devices. You’ll get unlimited access to your credit score, and you'll be notified of changes to your credit report and potential threats to your personal information. The tool alerts you when your Social Security number is used with a new name or address. It also scans the dark web and alerts you if it finds your Social Security number or email address there.

Want to travel abroad for a semester? With the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One on hand, you won't incur expensive fees tacked onto each purchase. You could save a few dollars for each transaction this way — which, over the course of a few months, could add up to hundreds. As a Visa, the card is also widely accepted abroad.

Travel and retail benefits

With 24-hour travel assistance services, you can get your card replaced if it’s lost or stolen. And the travel accident insurance covers a loss when you use your credit card to purchase your fare. You can also stress less about a rental car being stolen or damaged because the auto rental collision coverage may reimburse you if that happens. (Terms apply. Benefits may change over time.)

Drawbacks and considerations

The Journey Student Rewards from Capital One might not be the best card for all students. If you have better-than-average-credit or if the card isn't a match for your spending, consider other options.

Here are a few reasons why you might consider a different credit card:

Low rewards rates

The Discover it® Student Cash Back , for example, earns 5% cash back in rotating categories on up to $1,500 in quarterly purchases (activation required; all other purchases earn 1% back). The card also comes with free FICO scores, security alerts and no foreign transaction fees. Discover notes that there's no FICO history requirement for this card. It has a $0 annual fee.

The Citi Rewards+℠ Student Card offers an introductory 0% period for purchases — a rare benefit on a student credit card. It earns 2 ThankYou points per $1 spent at supermarkets and gas stations (on up to $6,000 spent annually) and 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases. Plus, all purchases are automatically rounded up to the nearest 10 points.

Traditional credit requirements

If you lack a U.S. credit history, a Social Security number or both, the Deserve® EDU Mastercard for Students can be an excellent starter card. The issuer uses its own underwriting process to evaluate applications based on alternative criteria. The card earns 1% cash back on all purchases and it even offers some perks, too. It has a $0 annual fee. Terms apply.

For even more card options, take a look at NerdWallet's best-rated credit cards .

alternate-pick-product-card-image

If you're building or rebuilding credit, you might be better off getting a secured credit card. These cards require a cash security deposit, which makes them easier to apply for. Capital One's secured card deserves a look because of its flexible deposit requirements.

How to decide if it's right for you

If you’re looking for high rewards rates or low interest rates, the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One may not be the best choice for you. But if you’re seeking a simple, $0 -annual-fee card that can help you build your credit and eventually qualify you for better terms, this is a very good starter card.

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

Methodology

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. Main perks and benefits

The Journey Student card from Capital One has benefits that are custom-built for students just starting their credit journey.

The main draw of the card, for many, is that it has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees. Beyond that, the card provides tools that help you manage your money.

journey rewards capital one

Eno®, your Capital One® assistant, makes it easy to manage your account via text. You can receive alerts when bills are due or to notify you of transactions, and receive fraud alerts and notifications of duplicate transactions so you can preserve the good credit you're starting to build. You can generate a virtual pin number to shop safer online. Eno can also help you budget your money by offering insights on your spending every month.

The Journey Student card provides $0 fraud liability if your card is ever lost or stolen. You can monitor your credit through Capital One's CreditWise app.

You can set your monthly due date and ramp up your rewards to 1.25% — up from 1% — each month you pay your bill on time. A higher credit limit will reduce your credit utilization ratio, which, in turn, can help increase your credit score over time.

Earning and Redeeming Rewards

You'll earn 1% to 1.25% cash back on every purchase every time you use your Journey card. Your rewards never expire, and there's no limit to how much you can earn.

Rewards come in the form of a statement credit to lower your bill, and you can redeem them at any time through your Capital One online account or mobile app. You can choose to redeem them manually or set up automatic redemption when you reach a certain amount of cash.

Which cards compete with Capital One Journey for students?

Depending on their credit rating, students have many choices when it comes to credit cards. They can opt for regular rewards cards designed for people who are building their credit or cards specifically designed for students.

If we narrow down the competitors to student-marketed cards, the main competitors of Journey include Discover it Student Cash Back , the Citi Rewards+℠ Student Card, and the Bank of America® Cash Rewards credit card for Students.

All three of these cards offer more generous rewards than the Journey card, with Discover it Student Cash Back leading the pack. Discover it Student Cash Back gives students 5% cash back on their first $1,500 in purchases in rotating quarterly categories after enrollment, and 1% cash back on everything else.

Discover also matches the cash back total after the first year of card membership, giving this card a lot of bang for the buck. Plus, good students earn a $20 statement credit for each school year their GPA is 3.0 or higher for up to five years. Like Capital One Journey, Discover's student card has no foreign transaction fees — though bear in mind that Discover may not be as widely accepted as other card types outside the U.S.

The Citi Rewards+ Student Card has a novel rewards structure. The card rounds up your rewards points on all purchases to the nearest 10 points. If you buy a meal at your favorite fast-casual restaurant and it costs $11.49, you'll earn 20 points. And a $4.33 latte will earn you 10 points – not four. Not bad.

Citi Rewards+ Student card also has a welcome bonus. You'll earn 2,500 points after you spend $500 with your card within the first three months of account opening.

The Bank of America Cash Rewards credit card for Students also has an unusual rewards structure. You choose the category that earns 3% rewards. You'll also get 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs and 1% everywhere else. This highly customizable card can help new credit holders get used to the idea of bonus categories. You'll only earn 2% and 3% for the first $2,500 in combined purchases quarterly, yielding $75 in cash rewards, before you drop down to earning 1% on all purchases.

Bank of America offers a $100 online cash rewards bonus after you spend $1,000 in purchases within 90 days of account opening.

The Capital One Journey for Students does not have a sign-up bonus and offers fewer rewards than any of its competitors. The main benefit of the Capital One Journey card is the lack of foreign transaction fees and the tools it offers to help build your credit quickly.

The information for the Bank of America Cash Rewards credit card for Students has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Bottom line

In general, there are better student cards to apply for than the Capital One Journey Rewards for Students. Discover it Student Cash Back carries a generous rewards structure, a sign-up bonus and no foreign transaction fees. However, if your credit is only fair or average, it may be easier to qualify for Journey. Set up automatic payment for your bill, earn a credit limit increase and prepare to move on to a better rewards card as your credit score rises.

Editor's note:

Just because you’re still in school doesn’t mean you can’t start working toward a healthy financial future. In fact, if you begin building credit as a college student, it might be easier to do things like rent an apartment or take out an auto loan when you start your post-college life.

Enter the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One, a card that helps you build good credit habits and offers a little kickback to boot. In this Journey Student Rewards from Capital One credit card review, we’ll take a look at this card’s features and whether it’s the right choice for you.

Who should get the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One card?

Card basics, journey student rewards from capital one benefits and perks, drawbacks to the journey student rewards from capital one, earning & redeeming cash back, journey student rewards from capital one faqs, other cards to consider.

If you have a limited credit history, the Journey Student Rewards Card could be a great choice. Cardholders can earn 1% cash back on all purchases and 1.25% cash back each month you make an on-time monthly payment; plus 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

That extra incentive to earn bonus cash back is a great perk for those committed to being a good steward of their credit card and avoiding late payments. Plus, you have the potential to access a higher credit line as soon as six months after opening the account.

If you're new to credit, this card has some features that might come in handy. You can also use Eno, Capital One's assistant, to easily access card information like your balance, available credit, and recent transactions.

It’s also a great card for those who are interested in international travel since there are no foreign transaction fees.

  • Unlimited cashback rewards:  This card offers 1% cash back on all purchases and 1.25% cash back each month you make an on-time monthly payment; plus 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. The Journey Student Rewards card also offers an autopay feature, so you’ll never miss the due date.
  • Simple credit line increases : Don’t worry if you start out with a lower credit limit than you’d like. You will get automatic consideration for a higher credit line as soon as six months after you open this account.
  • Travel perks: This credit card has no foreign transaction fees, so you don't have to worry about this extra cost when traveling abroad.

  • Low rewards rate: Some student cards offer higher reward rates. If rewards are important to you, check out the Discover it ® Student Cash Back.

Best ways to earn

The good news is that the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One doesn’t have complicated earnings categories or make you activate bonus categories during specific times of the year.

All you need to do is use your credit card for your regular purchases to earn 1% cash back on all purchases and 1.25% cash back each month you make an on-time monthly payment; plus 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

Be sure to make on-time payments in order to earn the maximum amount of cash back. You can boost your credit score and earn some cashback rewards at the same time.

However, be careful not to run up a large balance on this card. If you don’t pay your balance off every month, you’ll be charged interest fees. Those costs can easily eat into your cashback rewards.

Maximizing your redemptions

Since this is a simple cashback card, there’s not much you can do in terms of getting more value out of your earnings. This card gives you the choice of redeeming your rewards via check, gift cards, or statement credit. Your rewards never expire, and there’s no limit to how much you can earn.

You can also set up automatic redemptions for your rewards, if you’d prefer. Choose a specific time each year to redeem your cash back, or select a certain dollar threshold (as little as $25 up to $1,500) to cash in rewards automatically.

Do I have to be a student to qualify for the Capital One Journey Student Rewards Card?

Though most student credit cards require you to be enrolled in school, this isn’t one of them. You do, however, need to be at least 18 years old and a U.S resident.

That said, this card was designed to be used by students. If you’re not in school, other credit cards may serve your needs better. For example, you might prefer to build your credit with a secured credit card .

Do I need a job to be eligible for the Journey Student Rewards Card?

You do need to have a source of income to be eligible for this card. Capital One asks that your monthly income exceeds your monthly rent or mortgage payment by at least $425 in order to be eligible.

However, you can count additional sources of income besides what you earn from a job. For example, you can include money you receive from public assistance or shared income that someone regularly deposits into an account for you to use.

What credit score do I need to get the Journey Student Rewards Card?

Capital One’s website doesn’t explicitly state the exact credit score you need, except that you need a credit score that’s poor to fair.

According to FICO, a fair credit score ranges from 580 to 669.

Can I upgrade this card after I graduate?

You may be able to upgrade, but this will depend on your specific situation. Factors such as your credit score, payment history, and income will all be considered before you’re approved for a different card.

To inquire about upgrading your card, log into your Capital One account and contact a customer service representative or call their customer service hotline to see what can be done.

If the Journey Student Rewards card isn’t a good fit, here are some alternatives:

Discover it ® Student Cash Back

This is another cashback card that rewards you for purchases. With the Discover it Student Cash Back , you can earn 5% cash back on everyday purchases at different places you shop each quarter like grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and more, up to the quarterly maximum when you activate. Plus, earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases—automatically. And Discover will match all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year.

Bank of America ® ️ Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students

This card is another great choice, as it has a welcome offer and higher rewards than the Journey Student Rewards Card. The  Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards for Students  offers a $200 cash rewards bonus after spending a $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days.

You also earn 3% cash back in a category of your choice and 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs (on up to $2,500 quarterly for these two categories combined); and 1% cash back on all other purchases

As more student credit cards enter the starter credit card space, you might be wondering which one is right for you. Most major issuers have respectable student credit card offers, all with varying rewards rates, welcome offers and other benefits.

In this comparison guide, we’ll look at two student credit cards from Capital One — the Capital One Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards Credit Card and the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One.

Main details

Quicksilver student cash rewards vs. journey student rewards highlights, rewards rate winner: quicksilver student cash rewards.

The Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards offers a flat 1.5 percent cash back on all purchases and there’s no limit to how much cash back you can earn. Plus, this card is eligible for 5 percent cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

In comparison, the Journey Student Rewards offers just 1 percent cash back on all purchases. That rate is then boosted to 1.25 percent back for the month if you pay your bill on time. If your goal is to earn as much cash back as possible, then the Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards would be the better option of the two.

Welcome bonus winner: Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards

The Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards currently offers a welcome bonus of $50 when you spend $100 within the first three months of card membership. This offer is among the better welcome offers available with student credit cards, and it would be easy to meet — you’d only have to spend about $34 per month to earn the bonus.

The Journey Student Rewards, on the other hand does not offer a welcome bonus.

Although the Journey Student Rewards’ welcome bonus requirements are easier to meet — you only need to pay your monthly credit card bills on time — the Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards offers an easy-to-attain, higher welcome bonus of $50, making it the clear winner in this category.

Annual fee winner: Tie

Neither card has an annual fee, meaning you won’t have to pay for card membership each year. It’s easy to find a student credit card without an annual fee, so make sure that any card you’re seriously considering doesn’t have one.

Foreign transaction fee winner: Tie

Both the Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards and Journey Student Rewards include no foreign transaction fees . This means either card would be a good option for studying or traveling abroad since you won’t have to pay a fee (usually around 3 percent) for each transaction you make outside of the country.

Which card earns the most?

The following is a pretty straightforward spending example since we’re comparing the Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards’ 1.5 percent cash back to the Journey Student Rewards’ 1 percent cash back. In addition to that, we’ll also throw in the Journey Student Rewards’ bonus cash back rate of 1.25 percent to see how much you can earn as an on-time payer.

Say you spend $125 on groceries, $50 on dining, $30 on entertainment and $40 on miscellaneous expenses each month, for a total of $245. Of the three earning rates for the two cards, you could earn the following cash back on your purchases each month:

For this spending example, we used modest spending amounts to estimate the potential rewards earnings since students likely won’t have high credit limits or spending budgets. But you can see that the Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards wins out on cash back every time.

The Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards even beats out the Journey Student Rewards in terms of the welcome bonus.  That’s an extra money in your pocket that you can use however you want — for streaming services, takeout, shopping or whatever.

Why should you get the Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards?

You should get this card if you want a straightforward way to earn a respectable cash back rate and a solid welcome bonus. Plus, the card includes multiple ways to redeem rewards and no foreign transaction fees, making it a good pick if you’re planning to travel or study abroad . It also comes with access to Capital One Travel and 5 percent cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through the Capital One Travel portal.

Additional benefits

The Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards comes with a number of card benefits like price protection, extended warranty protection, complimentary concierge services, rental car insurance, roadside assistance, travel accident insurance, emergency travel assistance, $0 fraud liability, virtual card numbers from Eno and credit monitoring through CreditWise, among others.

Also, you can automatically be considered for a higher credit limit in as little as six months, which is a much shorter time period than competing student cards. If you use your card responsibly — which means paying your bill on time and keeping your balance in check — then Capital One could reward you with an increased credit limit .

Redemption options

Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards cardholders can redeem their cash back rewards for statement credits, checks, checkout at PayPal, shopping on Amazon and gift cards from merchants like Starbucks, Ulta Beauty, Panera Bread, Whole Foods and others.

Recommended credit score

Since this is a student credit card, your approval odds are likely better if your credit profile is, at minimum, in the fair to good credit range (a FICO score of 580 to 740).

Why should you get the Journey Student Rewards?

If you’re a new cardholder looking to build your credit and practice good financial habits — and you’re not interested in the welcome bonuses or higher rewards rates that come with other student cards — then the Journey Student Rewards could be a good fit for you.

The Journey Student Rewards doesn’t have as many card benefits as the Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards. The main benefits this card offers include access to the Capital One Travel portal, $0 fraud liability, virtual card numbers from Eno, credit monitoring through CreditWise and emergency card replacement. Plus, like the Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards, you’ll be automatically considered for a higher credit limit after six months.

The redemption methods for this card are the same as the Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards. You can redeem your cash back in the form of statement credits, checks, gift cards or shopping at Amazon or via PayPal.

The Journey Student Rewards requires a fair to good credit score (a FICO score of 580 to 740).

The bottom line

Building credit can be a long, drawn-out process, but starting early can make a huge difference. As a student, there are plenty of credit-building student cards available that’ll also offer you perks like welcome bonuses and cash back on all of your purchases.

In this case, there are pros and cons for both the Capital One Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards and the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One . However, even if you only plan to hang onto a student card for a year or two, the Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards beats out the Journey Student Rewards in terms of its higher rewards rate, welcome bonus and additional benefits.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * -- Wells Fargo’s latest and best travel card -- recently launched with an impressive set of features. Its competitive rewards, welcome bonus and redemption options take aim at incumbent travel credit cards from Chase, American Express and Capital One.

What gives Wells Fargo’s first foray into the point-transfer space an edge is that you don’t have to book travel in a portal to earn the highest rewards rates.

Here’s why we think the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey could go toe-to-toe with some of the best travel credit cards, plus three insider tips to help you decide if you should add it to your credit card lineup.

Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect with the Autograph Journey:

  • Earn 60,000 welcome bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in purchases within three months of account opening.
  • Earn unlimited 5x points on hotels, 4x points on airlines, 3x points on other travel and dining and 1x on other purchases.
  • Receive an annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Other benefits include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, roadside dispatch and cell phone insurance.
  • $95 annual fee.

3 key benefits cardholders get from the autograph journey .

Here’s a rundown of four facts we discovered about the Autograph Journey that you should know when deciding whether to apply.

1. You can transfer points with Wells Fargo point-based cards

The launch of the Autograph Journey also marks the first transferable points program from Wells Fargo, which joins other card issuers like Chase and Capital One, which have their own pooling programs .

Autograph Journey will be able to do a points transfer with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . This is especially notable since the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers bonus rewards in different categories than the Autograph Journey.

For example, the Autograph card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, plus 1x points on other purchases. So you can maximize your point earning across different categories, then transfer your points to your Autograph Journey account to access premium travel redemptions.

2. It offers more options for earning bonus miles on travel than some competitors

The Autograph Journey will offer more flexibility than many travel rewards cards when it comes to earning more points on travel purchases. For example, cardholders earn unlimited 5x points on hotels booked directly with hotel brands and 4x points on airfare booked with airlines.

This helps the card stand out from other popular travel credit cards that offer the most bonus points only if you book travel through their portals. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * only offer the highest bonus rewards on travel booked through Capital One Travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also offers its highest rate of 5x points on travel booked through Chase Travel℠, whereas other travel purchases earn 2x points.

Autograph Journey cardholders also earn a minimum of 3x points on other travel purchases, which could include rental cars, cruises and travel booked through online travel agencies like Expedia and Priceline.

3. The card may grow in value as more transfer partners join

The Autograph Journey Card will earn flexible travel rewards points that transfer to a selection of airline and hotel partners, similar to Amex Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards . While the list of transfer partners is limited, Wells Fargo stated in its initial press release that “more partners will continue to be added throughout the year.”

Points transfers could dramatically change the value proposition of the Autograph Journey, especially if new partners include domestic airlines and popular hotel loyalty programs.

Wells Fargo point transfers will be available to new cardholders starting on April 4. For now, Wells Fargo transfer partners include the following:

Find the best credit card for you

5 best credit cards that offer pre-approval or pre-qualification in 2024, pre-approval doesn't guarantee approval, but it can help you avoid an unnecessary hard pull on your credit..

thumbnail

Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.

When you apply for a credit card, the issuer performs what is known as a hard pull or hard inquiry , which shows up on your credit report. Hard pulls temporarily lower your credit score, which isn't the end of the world, but it's better to avoid racking up unnecessary hard inquiries since they can remain on your credit report for up to two years. One way to do this is by going through a card issuer's pre-approval or pre-qualification process before applying.

Getting a pre-approved offer for a credit card doesn't guarantee you'll be approved, but it can give you a better idea of your approval odds with no hard inquiry. There is no impact to your credit score until you formally apply.

Not every card issuer offers pre-approvals. Below, CNBC Select details the top credit cards that generally offer pre-approval or pre-qualification and how they work. (See our methodology for more information on how we made this list.)

What's the difference between a pre-approval and a pre-qualification?

The terms pre-approval and pre-qualification both refer to the card issuers' pre-screening process that can help you determine whether you'll qualify for a credit card without a hard pull on your credit reports. Prequalified offers are typically initiated by consumers who want to check their approval odds, while preapproved offers are generally unsolicited offers from card issuers.

Does pre-approval or pre-qualification result in a hard credit pull?

Most credit card pre-approvals do not result in a hard pull of your credit. Some issuers require a Social Security Number (SSN) or the last four digits of your SSN to process a pre-approval, but this is generally done to verify your identity and shouldn't result in a credit check unless otherwise stated.

Does pre-approval guarantee approval?

If you qualify for a pre-approved credit card or receive a pre-screened offer in the mail, that does not guarantee you'll be approved. Your credit score, income and history with the card issuers are all taken into account, but won't be fully reviewed unless you submit a traditional card application.

Bottom line

Getting a pre-approved, pre-qualified or pre-screened credit card offer doesn't guarantee you'll get approved for the card if you apply. However, seeing whether you're pre-approved for a card offer is easy and typically doesn't require a hard credit pull. So it doesn't hurt to explore what offers you may qualify for.

Global Entry renewal: A how-to guide

April 18, 2024 | 4 min read

If you’ve ever traveled abroad, you may be familiar with the Global Entry Program. It’s a Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) designed to get international travelers through airport customs checkpoints faster when they reenter the U.S.

Learn how to renew your Global Entry membership before it expires, how long renewal lasts and more.

Key takeaways

  • Global Entry is a TTP administered by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
  • Membership in Global Entry lasts for five years; renewal extends it for another five years.
  • You can renew your membership starting one year before it expires.
  • Capital One Venture and Venture X cardholders can receive up to a $100 statement credit toward their Global Entry renewal.*

What is Global Entry?

Global Entry is a TTP run by CBP. The program is designed to help expedite airport customs screening for travelers reentering the U.S. after traveling abroad.

Benefits of Global Entry include helping members reduce wait times at security checkpoints and navigate airports more easily .

Global Entry membership is open to U.S. citizens, legal permanent U.S. residents, Mexican nationals, citizens of certain other countries and more. It’s available at dozens of airports in the U.S. and abroad.

Global Entry renewal requirements

Here are things to know about renewing your Global Entry membership.

  • You can renew your membership starting one year before it expires. And if you submit a renewal application before your membership expires, you can use the program’s benefits for up to 24 months after the expiration date.
  • You’ll need to submit a renewal application. You can complete your Global Entry renewal application and pay your renewal fee on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website.
  • You may need to attend an in-person interview. An interview may be required once your renewal has been conditionally approved. But since this interview isn’t always necessary, be sure to check your account periodically for updates on next steps.

How to renew Global Entry

Here are specifics on the Global Entry renewal process.

1. Fill out the Global Entry renewal application

You can fill out your renewal application on the DHS website. Here are the steps:

  • Sign in to your account on the TTP portal. If you don’t already have an account, you’ll be directed to create one.
  • Select the option for Global Entry renewal and follow the prompts.
  • Submit your renewal application.

2. Pay the Global Entry renewal fee

Once you’ve submitted your renewal application on the TTP portal, simply follow the prompts to pay your application fee.

When it comes to paying the renewal fee, there’s good news: Some travel credit card issuers reimburse cardholders for the fee. In fact, Capital One reimburses Venture and Venture X cardholders up to $100 for Global Entry fees every four years.

3. Complete your Global Entry renewal interview, if required

When you first apply for membership, you’ll typically be required to attend an in-person Global Entry interview with a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer. But an interview isn’t always required for renewal.

If you’re asked to attend a renewal interview, you can schedule it at a Global Entry enrollment center or at a major airport to coincide with your travel plans.

Global Entry renewal FAQ

Here are commonly asked questions about renewing Global Entry membership.

Can I renew my Global Entry pass online?

Yes. You can fill out your renewal application on the DHS website’s TTP portal.

How long after Global Entry expires can you renew?

You can typically renew Global Entry starting one year before your membership expiration date. If you complete a renewal application before your membership expires, you can continue using Global Entry benefits for up to 24 months.

Does Global Entry renewal require an interview?

Not always. But if you’re asked to attend an interview, you can schedule it at a Global Entry enrollment center. A program known as Enrollment on Arrival also allows you to schedule your interview at a major airport to coincide with your travel plans.

Global Entry renewal in a nutshell

Global Entry is one of several U.S. government TTPs. Its goal is to help travelers get through customs screening faster when they land in U.S. airports after traveling abroad.

Capital One Venture and Venture X cardholders can receive up to a $100 statement credit toward their application fee or renewal fee every four years.

Sanctuary needs you to answer its call for aid in Season 31: Season of the Forbidden Archives. Starting on April 12 at 5 p.m. PDT/CET/KST , Nephalem can harness the power of Forbidden Archives theme, which first debuted with Season 20. For an in-depth look into what’s coming, read below.

Seasonal conquest, haedrig’s gift.

Patch 2.7.7 Notes

Season 31 is the Season of the Forbidden Archives. Many adventurers have come to learn the power that dwells within the ancient nephalem artifact, Kanai’s Cube. However, none understands this power better than the equally celebrated and reviled Horadrim, Zoltun Kulle. Kulle was able to unlock and harness the power of the Cube like none before, leveraging its power to siphon and archive the energies of powerful items. With Season 31, we explore the power Kulle might lend to your fingertips if his experiments went unchecked.

For the duration of Season 31, the slots in Kanai’s Cube that allow you to equip three additional Legendary powers will not be restricted to their usual categories. While normally a player can equip one power each from the Weapon, Armor, and Jewelry categories, Season 31 players can mix and match between all three! This might allow you to run two Weapon powers with one Armor power. Or perhaps you might choose to run three Amulet powers instead. The choice is yours, and we’re as eager as you are to experiment with the new build opportunities this creates!

Season 31 Cosmetic Rewards

Beginning with Season 17, we began re-introducing previous Seasonal rewards to make them available to players who may have missed them the first time around. For Season 31, this means awards originally available from Season 7 are returning to the Season Journey.

journey rewards capital one

However, we know it’s nice to have something new to aim for if you’ve participated in previous Seasons. We’re bringing back End of Journey rewards as introduced in Season 17, with not one, but two new cosmetic rewards for those who complete the entirety of the Season journey. Feast your eyes upon the Valor Portrait Frame and Angelic Treasure Goblin pet !

In addition to the Helm and Shoulders slots of the exclusive Conqueror Set, you’ll be able to earn a series of portrait frames that embody the snowy, foreboding aura of the Eternal Woods. If you need a warm little pal to keep you cozy through your cold journeys, the Dream of Piers fiery nature should do the trick—when he’s not instilling night terrors in the local fauna.

If you’ve been diligently slaying demons for the past few Seasons and reached Conqueror in the Season Journey each time, you’ve surely accrued a few extra stash tabs. You’ll earn one additional tab each Season by finishing the Conqueror tier, up to a maximum of five :

  • Guardian of Sanctuary: Finish a level 70 Nephalem Rift on Torment XIII within five minutes.
  • Gem of My Life: Level three Legendary Gems to level 55.
  • All I Do IS Win: Complete two Conquests this Season.
  • Kill You: Kill Ghom at level 70 in under 30 seconds on Torment XIII difficulty.
  • Money Ain’t A Thang: Slay Greed on Torment XIII difficulty.
  • Take U There: Reach Greater Rift level 60 Solo.
  • Power Amplification: Use Kanai’s Cube to augment an Ancient Legendary item with a level 50+ gem.
  • Cubic Reconfiguration: Use Kanai’s Cube to reforge a Legendary item.

Want to prepare your Conquest plan for Season 31? Here are the challenges you’ll face! Returning for Season 31 is Sprinter/Speed Racer , where you’re challenged to complete the entire Diablo III campaign from Act I to Act V at level 70 in under 1 hour! Next is Avarice/Avaritia , where all that glitters is gold—that is, if you can complete a 50 million gold streak outside of The Vault or its Inner Sanctum. On a Good Day/I Can’t Stop encourages you to upgrade your Legendary Gems; level three Legendary Gems to 65 to complete this challenge! Push your way to Greater Rift level 75 to complete Divinity/Lionhearted. Lastly, a fan-favorite for those who enjoy unconventional builds, The Thrill/Superhuman requires completion of a Greater Rift level 45—solo and without any Set items equipped.

Finally, the Class Sets rewarded for completing certain chapters in the Season Journey courtesy of Haedrig’s Gift have rotated once more. We’ve listed the available Sets below. For those new to Seasons, here’s how it works:

Completing Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of the Season Journey will reward you with three of Haedrig’s Gifts. Each Gift contains a few pieces from one of your Class Sets. Players can only unlock one Class Set in this manner per Season across Hardcore and Non-Hardcore, so choose wisely!

The set you receive depends on the class of the character you’re playing when you open each Haedrig’s Gift. To collect a full Class Set, you’ll need to open all three on the same character.

Here are the sets granted by Haedrig’s Gift in Season 31:

  • Barbarian – Wrath of the Wastes
  • Crusader – Roland’s Legacy
  • Demon Hunter – Unhallowed Essence
  • Monk – Raiment of a Thousand Storms
  • Necromancer – Bones of Rathma
  • Witch Doctor – Helltooth Harness
  • Wizard – Tal Rasha’s Elements
