* About: McGill Student Travel Registry

Service overview.

McGill Student Travel Registry allows the university to keep track of students traveling outside of the Greater Montreal area on University-sanctioned activities, such as exchanges, field studies, study away, semester abroad, research abroad… for the purposes of communication in cases of emergency and safety concerns.

The application, developed by 'AppArmor, a Motorola Solutions company , consist of two components:'

  • A mobile app: Students are required to register their university-sanctioned travel itinerary using the app. This will allow them to receive notifications from the University, specifically the Safety Abroad Officer, depending on their travel activities and locations. Students may also use the app to confirm their safety, using the “Check-in” feature or inform the University that they need assistance.
  • A web-based dashboard:  Authorized staff members can view students who have registered on the app and send out mass push notifications and email notifications to those who may be at risk, based on their activities and locations. Staff members can also view various reports through the dashboard.

mcgill travel program

Who can use it

How to request & access the service, access to the mcgill student travel registry mobile app:.

  • Students who are scheduled to attend a university-sanctioned travel activity other than exchanges will be notified by their respective Departments and instructed to download and register in the McGill Student Travel Registry app. Exchange students will be notified by the International Education Office.
  • For instructions on how to download the app (for students only), please go to the following website: https://www.mcgill.ca/mcgillabroad/safety/registry
  • Students are required to log into the app at least once every 30 days while abroad as both android and iphone users will notice that the app will enter a hibernation mode if they fail to do so. This would prevent the app from running at full capacity and receiving emergency check-in notifications in the event of an emergency.

Requesting access to the web dashboard (for staff only):

  • Submit requests via the SIS Authorization webform; indicate the travel registry role that the user needs, and why they need it.
  • The request must be approved by a security designate.
  • Once approved, SIS Security will go to the McGill Student Travel Registry dashboard and grant access to the user. Users who have been granted access to the dashboard will receive an email directly from 'AppArmor, a Motorola Solutions company' with access information.

There is no cost associated with this service.

Availability

The service is available 24 X 7, except during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance that would be announced by 'AppArmor, a Motorola Solutions company' and communicated to all affected users.

Frequently asked questions

Am I required to use the McGill Student Travel Registry app if I’m traveling abroad for a University-sanctioned activity?

Yes, registering in the app is mandatory for all students traveling abroad or domestically outside of the Greater Montreal area on a University-sanctioned activity. Your faculty/department office will inform you of this requirement and give you the appropriate information prior to traveling. You may also reach out to McGill Abroad at  safetyabroad@mcgill.ca  for support or questions. Students must turn-on push notifications to receive check-in requests in case of an emergency.

What if I lose my phone, or I’m not able to use it? In case of an emergency, notifications will be sent both to your mobile device and as an email to your McGill email address.

If students need to contact McGill in an emergency or crisis while abroad, they should call McGill Campus Security at +1-514-398-3000, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What is Hibernation Mode and how does it affect the McGill Student Travel Registry?

Hibernation Mode is when a mobile app does not run at full capacity. In the case of the McGill Student Travel Registry, both iPhone and Android users are required to sign into the app at least once every 30 days while abroad. The reason being that without doing so, the app will enter a hibernation mode which would prevent the student from receiving push notifications and/or check-in requests in the event of an emergency.

Does the McGill Student Travel Registry app need to access the location services on my mobile device?

You can use the travel registry functionality without having to allow the app to access your location. If location services are turned off, McGill Abroad can communicate with you in case of an emergency based on the destination information you entered in the travel registry form.

However, location services on your mobile phone are required for other functionality, such as the optional “Friend Walk” feature, which allows you to share your location with a friend or relative when you are walking alone.

What features does the McGill Student Travel Registry provide?

The McGill Student Travel Registry gives you access to safety tools and information beyond the registration of your travel, including:

  • Live travel advice and advisories from the Government of Canada
  • Alerts with Check-in Requests from McGill if the status of your host destination country or region changes to” Avoid Non-Essential Travel” or “Avoid All Travel”, as per the Government of Canada’s Travel Advice and Advisories

Canadian students hunger-strike for college to divest from Israel-linked firms

Several McGill University students have spent more than three weeks demanding school divest $20m from various companies

A group of students at McGill University have spent more than three weeks on hunger strike in an effort to force the Canadian college to divest from “companies supporting the Israeli military”.

The move follows months of protests and sit-ins at McGill and at universities around the world, as students and faculty members have protested against Israel’s military offensive in Gaza .

Documents on McGill’s website show that it holds investments in companies including Lockheed Martin, a defense contractor that has sold fighter jets to Israel, and Safran, a French air and defense company.

“The university of McGill has left us no choice because they’ve been ignoring the peaceful protests, the actions that have been taken by students and student groups on campus,” said Rania Amine, an undergraduate student at McGill who on Friday marked her 33rd day on hunger strike.

“McGill has ultimately pushed us to take this extreme form of action and put our bodies and our health and our lives on the line to make them know that it is absolutely unacceptable that they use our tuition money to invest in this way.”

The students are calling for McGill, one of the most prestigious universities in Canada , to divest about $20m from various companies.

Amine said the McGill administration had acknowledged the strike, and agreed to a public forum on the issue, before cancelling the meeting. The school proposed a private meeting in early March, the students said, which was turned down.

Chadi, an undergraduate student who asked that his last name not be published, said that Friday was his 21st day of continuous hunger strike.

“All of this stops when McGill divests,” Chadi said.

“We’re hunger striking for divestment and we’re in it for the long haul. We’ve already proved we’re in it for the long haul just by the sheer number of days we’ve done this.”

McGill on Friday issued a statement saying it is “concerned about the well-being of the students participating in this initative”.

“McGill repects the right to free speech and free assembly, within the limits of university policy and the law,” the statement added. “We … have repeatedly offered to meet with [the student protesters] directly . Though they have so far declined, this offer still stands.

“We have clearly communicated the procedures available for expressing concern about the university’s investment holdings, or for advocating policy changes. These students have chosen a different approach; our hope is that they will understand that university policies will not be determined in this way before their well-being is affected. We urge them to make choices that prioritize their health.”

In February, McGill said it would divest from companies listed in the Carbon Underground 200, a list of the top 100 coal and the top 100 oil and gas publicly traded reserve holders, following a years-long campaign by students and faculty members.

It is a great pleasure to announce that our colleague Courtney Paquette has been named a 2024 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in Computer Science.

Machine learning relies heavily on probabilistic optimization algorithms.

While machine learning papers are written at a staggering rate, there is much less foundational mathematical work that addresses the success of machine learning.

Since her PhD, Courtney has been at the forefront of this foundational work.

More recently, with her partner in crime Elliot Paquette, she has developed a pioneering program blending random matrices, high dimensional probability and optimization theory.

Please join me in congratulating Courtney on this huge, highly deserved honour.

MBTA board passes $23M discount fare program…

Things To Do

Mbta board passes $23m discount fare program for low-income riders, the agency’s board of directors has approved a reduced fare program.

Roughly 60,000 low-income riders who rely on the MBTA are set to receive half-priced tickets and passes, with the agency’s board approving the reduced fare plan long sought by Gov. Maura Healey.

The MBTA Board of Directors unanimously greenlighted the program during its monthly meeting Thursday, receiving loud applause from advocates who say the initiative will bring them major relief.

The program, set to launch later this spring or in the early summer, will provide half-priced tickets and passes to riders across the beleaguered network who are between the ages 26 and 64 and have an income under 200% of the federal poverty line.

The board also voted for a contract “reset” with Chinese firm CRRC that now calls for the final new Red and Orange Line trains to be delivered by the end of 2027.

Under the updated terms, the MBTA will pay as much as $148 million more to account for higher-than-expected costs linked to the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain disruptions, swelling the total contract value to more than $1 billion.

The agency also agreed to forgive about $90 million in penalties that the manufacturer faces for delays so far. Another $37 million in damages would remain in place, but the updated contract would set incentives that could effectively dismiss those charges as well if CRRC meets new targets.

As for the discount fares, the cost to roll out the program, which will also apply to the RIDE paratransit service, is expected to be between $23–$26 million next fiscal year, an amount that is projected to grow to $52–$62 million by FY29.

MBTA Advisory Board Executive Director Brian Kane raised concerns around the implications of the program, tying it to the agency’s continued financial and transparency problems.

Kane, speaking to the board Thursday, echoed similar comments he made last month in a segment on WBZ’s Keller @ Large.

“There’s no funding source dedicated for it in the long term,” Kane said in late February. “Gov. Healey has put $45 million in her budget, just because it’s in the governor’s budget doesn’t mean it’s going to actually pass. The legislature has to do what they do. But there’s no money in year two, and the costs for this program rise to about $100 million after five years.”

Healey allocated $5 million for research on low-income fares in this fiscal year’s budget, with MBTA staff taking “significant steps toward program implementation,” according to officials. Those efforts include developing interagency partnerships with the state Registry of Motor Vehicles and Executive Office of Health and Human Services.

Steven Povich, senior director of fare policy and analytics, in January said he believes riders will be able to get through the enrollment process within five minutes. Officials are creating a tool that will check an applicant’s participation status in other low-income state programs, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, he said.

Discounts will apply to anyone making under 200% of the federal poverty limit, which translates to about $30,000 for a single-person household or $60,000 a year for a family of four. Officials estimate roughly 62,000 current T riders will meet the threshold.

The program’s implementation comes during a time when the agency’s budget gap could grow to $652 million in the next fiscal year, when pandemic relief funds that have been helping the agency offset its significant loss in fare revenue and high cost of federally mandated safety fixes run out.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Sights of Elektrostal: the history of the city, what to see, photos and reviews

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

Elektrostal is a fairly large industrial city, which is located near the Vokhonka River and almost 40-50 km from the eastern part of Moscow. There are a lot of powerful factories here, where many residents of Elektrostal work. They are perfectly combined with the most beautiful green boulevards, streets and parks, bright lawns and flower beds that adorn almost the entire town. It is picturesque due to amazing reservoirs and forests. It is worth learning more about the main attractions of Elektrostal, photos of which are in the article.

sights g elektrostal

The city was founded in 1916 thanks to the construction of a metallurgical plant. Previously, this place was the natural boundary of Calm. To start construction, the labor of local peasants was used. In the middle of 1925 herebuilt the first railway line that connected Elektrostal with Moscow. After the onset of 1938, the village turned into a separate city.

It is noteworthy that during the Great Patriotic War, the Electrostal plants produced ammunition that was needed for victory. In particular, it is worth noting the production of the legendary Katyushas.

A new stage for the factories of the city began after the invention of atomic weapons. The local plant was on the list of the main production facilities of the nuclear industry. This led to the fact that in 1954 the production of fuel was launched, which was used for the operation of nuclear power plants.

Image

In 1963, the cultural center "October" was built, and this was done by the masters of the Novo-Kramatorsky plant, named after Stalin. It featured a spacious auditorium that could seat more than 850 people, as well as a unique revolving stage for actors to change scenery in seconds.

At different times, eminent creative groups performed in this cultural center, as well as the Beryozka ensemble, famous at that time. It is noteworthy that even in our time the cultural center is actively functioning, and the square in front of it is considered the most beautiful place in Elektrostal with fountains operating in the summer. In mid-2013, it received the status of a city of labor and military glory.

There are many numerous monuments in the city that tell about the history of this amazing place: a monument to Nikolai Vtorov -the founder of the famous plant "Elektrostal" near the House of Culture, a monument to Tevosyan - the chief engineer, monuments to M. Gorky and K. Marx, a sculpture "Steelworker", a monument to Korneev - Hero of the Soviet Union, as well as a memorial and a monument to soldiers who died in Afghanistan and on North Caucasus.

This is a fairly large and old factory in the city that specializes in the production of fuel for local gas stations. The plant is part of the structure of the company FC "TVEL" of the state corporation "Rosatom". The General Director of the enterprise is O. L. Sedelnikov.

This plant produces nuclear fuel, which is used by many nuclear power plants, transport power plants and research reactors, not only in Russia, but also in other European countries. The company has quality certificates OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001.

The museum of the plant presents its history, shows old photographs of the streets of the city, there are achievements of workers, as well as photos of significant people, there are many of the most interesting models produced at the machine-building plant. It also stores presentations showing the principles of the enterprise.

This temple - a landmark of Elektrostal - is a single-dome centric church, which is made in the style of Byzantine times. It was erected in the 20th century, in the immediate vicinity of St. Andrew's Church. The temple was designed by T. V. Trubnikov and V. A. Drozdov, according to the developments of which the iconostasis and interior were exactly designed.

The church plays the role of a baptismal church and belongs to the Moscow diocese. The main shrines of the church are the most ancient and valuable icons of Nikandor Gorodnoyezersky and the Great Martyr Panteleimon. In addition, particles of the relics of saints are kept here. Divine services are held in the temple only during religious holidays.

the main attractions of the electric steel

The local park - a landmark of Elektrostal is an ideal place where everyone can stay alone with nature, ride numerous attractions, and also spend time playing slot machines. The park is especially popular in the summer - it is full of families, youth companies and couples in love.

Especially for the summer in 2013, the park was re-planned, which made it possible to accommodate more modern entertainment and interesting playgrounds for young visitors. Swimmers will love the dragon and swans, and trampolines have been installed for more active children.

It is noteworthy that the prices in the local park are quite affordable: the cost of a ticket for various attractions ranges from 30-100 rubles. Today it is called "Wonder Park", and it is divided into a quieter "Quiet Alley" and "Entertainment Alley", where there is an inexpensive cafe, a summer stage, and also quite a lot ofattractions.

This cinema is very popular, so it can be called a landmark of Elektrostal. It is located in the shopping center "Elgrad" and consists of 5 spacious halls that can accommodate more than 800 people. To show 2D and 3D films, only modern equipment is used: Dolby Digital Surround EX and MasterImage acoustics, as well as huge screens with a special coating. In all cinema halls, very comfortable conditions for visitors were created: climate control and soft chairs.

In the foyer of the Cinema Gallery there is a play area, a fairly spacious cafe, fast food establishments (Suneki, Tashir-pizza, Rostiks, Kebab-tun, etc.) and popcorn- bar. This is an attractive local leisure center, where the residents of Elektrostal are shown all the latest cinema.

This is a whole complex where you can spend your free time pleasantly and profitably. In addition to the playgrounds, which are fully equipped for playing laser tag and paintball, guests are invited to visit a local cafe where delicious home-cooked dishes are prepared, a banquet menu, karaoke, as well as a relaxing sauna with a warm font.

What do tourists who have visited the city say? It is not tourist, but industrial. Attractions are quite specific, but overall interesting. Tourists were pleased with low prices.

Insurers could face losses of up to $4 billion after Baltimore bridge tragedy

LONDON − Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse could cost insurers billions of dollars in claims, analysts say, and one put the toll at as much as $4 billion, which would make the tragedy a record shipping insurance loss.

Officials have turned toward a salvage operation with four people still missing in the wreckage and two bodies recovered after a collision with a Singapore-flagged container ship destroyed the landmark bridge on Tuesday, forcing the closure of one of the busiest U.S. ports.

With little clarity on when the Port of Baltimore would reopen, insurers and analysts are now assessing the likely losses borne by underwriters across several product lines including property, cargo, marine, liability, trade credit and contingent business interruption.

"Depending on the length of the blockage and the nature of the business interruption coverage for the Port of Baltimore, insured losses could total between $2 billion and $4 billion," said Marcos Alvarez, managing director for global insurance ratings at Morningstar DBRS. That would surpass the record insured losses of the  Costa Concordia  luxury cruise liner disaster in 2012, he said.

Mathilde Jakobsen, senior director, analytics at insurance ratings agency AM Best, also said the claims would likely run into "billions of dollars."

Protect your family: Find the best life insurance policies of 2023

Ship liability insurance, which covers marine environmental damage and injury, is provided through protection and indemnity insurers known as P&I Clubs.

The International Group of P&I Clubs collectively insures approximately 90% of the world's ocean-going tonnage and member P&I clubs mutually reinsure each other by sharing claims above $10 million. The IG Group declined to comment.

According to AM Best, the group holds general excess of loss reinsurance cover up to the value of $3.1 billion.

Spreading the cost

Moody's Ratings analyst Brandan Holmes said approximately 80 different reinsurers provided that cover to the ship's insurers.

"While the total claim is expected to be high, it is unlikely to be significant for individual reinsurers since it will be spread across so many," he said.

Insurer Britannia P&I said in a statement that the vessel, named the Dali, was entered with the club, adding that it was working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities "to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally."

Loretta Worters, spokesperson at the Insurance Information Institute, said AXA XL was the lead reinsurer on the first layer of cover for IG's reinsurance program, with other global reinsurers also involved. AXA XL did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Alvarez said the disaster would likely put upward pressure on marine insurance rates globally.

Worters added she believed Aon was the insurance broker for the property policy for the bridge. Insurance Insider reported that Chubb was the lead underwriter for the policy. Aon and Chubb declined to comment.

Initial estimates of the cost of rebuilding the bridge, which is likely to be paid by the federal government , are at $600 million, economic software analysis company IMPLAN said.

The closure of the port for just one month could see a total loss of $28 million for the state of Maryland, according to IMPLAN analysis.

"The economic disruption and pain felt by businesses and individuals in Maryland and the Baltimore economic area will be widespread and likely take years to fully comprehend and compensate those affected," said Julien Horn, partner, Ports & Terminals and Logistics, at insurance broker McGill and Partners.
