If you’re keen to book a Caribbean cruise in the upcoming year, consider sailing aboard the Valiant Lady from Virgin Voyages. The ship — which is one of four adults-only “lady ships” from the brand — first set sail in 2022, and has since accumulated a number of reader’s choice awards for its quality.

But the line (and more specifically, the Valiant Lady herself) isn’t for everyone. It’s known for its luxury upgrades — from meals, to entertainment, to Wi-Fi and more. So if you’re looking to book a family vacation, look elsewhere. But for those who prefer to kick back without any kids running around, the Valiant Lady might be just the cruise for you.

Valiant Lady itinerary

From the ship’s original home port in Barcelona, Spain, the Virgin Voyages Valiant Lady at first offered cruises around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, but the ship has since dedicated itself to just the Caribbean. Depending on the month, it may sail from Miami, Florida, or San Juan, Puerto Rico, on multiple itineraries across the Caribbean.

Itineraries range from four to eight nights and make stops in places like Bimini, Cozumel, Roatan, St. John’s and more. Prices for 2024 cruises start at around $1,200 per cabin for a four-day cruise and go up from there.

Valiant Lady tour

All the ships in the Lady Ship fleet, including the Valiant Lady, are nearly identical (it’s mainly the itineraries that differ). Each offers 1,404 cabins ranging from Mega RockStar Quarters (complete with private terrace, a bottomless in-room bar and daily spa access) to more budget-friendly Insider cabins. Altogether, the rooms can accommodate up to 2,762 passengers.

Gym. There’s a gym on board the Valiant Lady (dubbed B-Complex) for fitness buffs and more relaxed exercisers alike. There are free group fitness classes, weights, specialized equipment and more spread over multiple workout zones — plus an outdoor running track. Prefer to kick it old school? Check out the Athletic Club, complete with a boxing ring, gymnastics equipment and basketball court.

Spa. There are plenty of ways to get pampered at Redemption Spa. Massages, facials, wraps, saunas and more await passengers looking to relax. There’s also a beauty salon, mani-pedis available, a barber shop and a tattoo parlor for those wanting to get inked at sea.

Pools. Take a dip at one of the swimming pools on board, including the Well-Being Pool located near the gym and the Aquatic Club. Pools are designed more for lounging than swimming laps, though, so keep that in mind if you prefer to swim for exercise.

There are several dining options on the Valiant Lady and they’re all included in the price of your booking (a fairly uncommon occurrence on many cruise ships these days).

Keep the good times going well into the night on the Virgin Voyage Valiant Lady at one of the many onboard bars. Just remember: alcoholic beverages are one thing that’s not included in your general cruise fare. You can opt to pre-pay for your bar tab, though.

There are several bars to choose from, including pool bars like the Aquatic Club, the champagne lounge Sip or On The Rocks cocktail bar.

You can also try your luck at The Casino, play games inside the Arcade or The Social Club, and sing classics with friends in a private karaoke room.

Valiant Lady entertainment

Scheduled performances vary from sailing to sailing so check what’s on the itinerary. You can count on live performances, poolside DJs, pop-up performance art and lively stage productions.

There are also wild dance show parties, theater productions with a circus twist, game shows, the Studio 72 club and more.

The bottom line

Virgin Voyages Valiant Lady reviews tend to be good on the whole. After all, the cruise line has won everything from the Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards to the CruiseCritic Cruisers’ Choice Award to Best Caribbean cruise line from U.S.News.

That doesn’t mean the Valiant Lady (or any other Virgin ship) is right for everyone, of course. Those wanting to travel with kids will need to look elsewhere, but for cruisers who love to eat without worrying about the bill, enjoy staying active, and revel in vibrant nightlife, it’s a solid option for a lively (and grown-up) Caribbean cruise.

If this is your first cruise with Virgin Voyages , you will want to make sure that you have a passport and that it is valid. Virgin Voyages prioritizes the safety and enjoyment of all passengers. As a part of their policy, every sailor must have a valid passport that doesn’t expire within six months after the voyage end date, regardless of country of citizenship. 

Why Passports Are Required on Virgin Voyages

The worst thing that could happen while on a cruise is to either be left behind by the cruise ship or to have a medical emergency while onboard (or onshore) and need to evacuate that country. Many destinations around the United States are close enough that the only thing separating them is a short helicopter ride. 

Passports are also one of the best ways of identification for international travel, ensuring all sailors have valid identification and paperwork. Some Caribbean islands, such as Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Barts, and Barbados, require a passport for entry. However, it’s important to note that these islands are the minority, as most others do not have this requirement.

Since Viring Voyages launched the Scarlet Lady and Resilient Lady, they have been traveling to more and more international destinations. Having a passport opens up those exotic new places for future sailings. 

Exceptions and Special Cases

Although passports are required for all passengers, certain exceptions and exceptional cases exist. For lost or stolen passports the day of, contacting Sailor Services is recommended for further assistance. 

In certain circumstances, Puerto Rico birth certificates, an acceptable original consular report, or a birth abroad-issued document may serve as proof of citizenship. Still, verification from citizenship and immigration services is advised.

Closed Loop Cruise and Virgin Voyages

A closed-loop cruise is a voyage that begins and ends in the same U.S. port. Many Caribbean itineraries begin and end in the United States. While some cruise lines may allow United States citizens on eligible closed-loop voyages without passports, Virgin Voyages adheres to the Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA) and requires all passengers, regardless of citizenship, to have a valid passport.

Many people like to sail with just their birth certificate, but it makes me feel safer knowing that I have my passport with me. 

Sailing from San Juan

Virgin Voyages starts with a new sailing out of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Even though San Juan is not a foreign port, the sailings visit the French Caribbean Islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. Virgin Voyages require sailors to possess a valid Passport Book to board these itineraries. Passport cards will not be accepted at these ports of call.

Understanding the Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA)

The PVSA is a federal law in the United States that prohibits the transportation of passengers between two distinct U.S. ports on any vessel other than a U.S.-flagged vessel. Established in 1886, the PVSA safeguards the U.S. maritime industry from foreign competition.

I heard you don’t need a passport when sailing out of miami..

During 2023, when it was difficult to get a passport due to the passport times, Virgin Voyages relaxed their requirements only for sailings out of Miami. Virgin is always subject to changing their requirements for these sailings next year or the year after. And they still encourage sailors to get a passport for all sailings. 

To board a Miami Sailing, you must provide one of the following documents: 

-Original valid U.S. Passport

-Original valid U.S. Passport Card

-Original valid Trusted Traveler Card (NEXUS, FAST)

-Original or copy of your state-issued birth certificate AND a physical Government-issued photo I.D. (like a driver’s license). 

-Original Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by the Department of State AND a physical Government-issued photo I.D. (like a driver’s license)

-Original Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services AND a physical Government-issued photo I.D. (like a driver’s license)

What are the passport requirements for a cruise?

Passports are required for all international destinations and cruises involving air travel outside of the U.S. They must be valid for at least six months after the last day of travel, and passport cards may be accepted for some “closed-loop” cruises. Can I get off my cruise without a passport?

Generally, you only need your cruise I.D. or cruise card to get off the cruise boat. However, suppose you are going off alone during DIY excursions rather than staying with cruise-sponsored excursions. In that case, I recommend that you bring a copy of your passport with you in case something happens while you are out exploring a foreign country. 

What happens if you get left behind on a cruise without a passport?

In the unlikely event that you get left behind on a cruise without a passport, it can be super stressful. It would help if you did everything you could to get back to the cruise ship. If, for some reason, you know you will be left behind, make sure you call ahead to the cruise ship to let them know what is happening. For a fine, they might be able to delay saily away time.

After seeing the ship sail away, the first thing to do is to head to the nearest embassy and have them assist you. 

Why would I get Travel Insurance for a Cruise?

The same reason why you would travel with a valid passport, you would want to have valid travel insurance. Having travel insurance can help you get back to your home country if you have a medical emergency or an unexpected departure from the ship.

Virgin Voyages Tips | 10 Things to Know Before Your First Cruise

If you’re sailing with Virgin Voyages, you should be prepared for sun-soaked days, fun-filled nights and flavor-packed meals. But you should also be prepared to do a bit of prep in advance if you want to take your cruise to the next level. In this post, we’ll share our 10 best Virgin Voyages tips to help you get the most out of your cruise.

I recently returned from a 5-day Virgin Voyages Dominican Daze Cruise on the Scarlet Lady . Before this trip, I had only cruised with Disney Cruise Line, and the Virgin Voyages experience was very different. I learned so many things from my first Virgin Voyages cruise, and I’m sharing it all here.

Follow these tips and you can be sure that you won’t miss out on any of the fun (or food) onboard. The best part about these tips is that most of them can be done before your trip, so by the time you board you can sit back and relax.

1. Complete the “Before You Sail” tasks ASAP.

As soon as you book your Virgin Voyages cruise (or as early as 120 days out), download the Virgin Voyages mobile app and complete the “Before you Sail” tasks. You’ll need the app for a few different things before and during your cruise, so you might as well get it now.

The “Before You Sail” task list has seven steps and takes about ten minutes. It includes things like confirming your passport information, taking a security photo and linking a credit card to use onboard. Most importantly though, this is where you can schedule your embarkation time. (Aka the time you can board the ship.)

It’s important to book your embarkation as soon as possible, because the best boarding times can book up quickly. What are the best embarkation times for Virgin Voyages? The earliest ones, which leads us to …

2. Schedule the earliest embarkation time.

I’d strongly recommend booking the earliest possible embarkation time for your Virgin Voyages cruise. On my cruise, this is 2 PM.

Early boarding has many benefits. Most obviously, you will have more time on the ship, plus shorter queues in the terminal. Most importantly though, early boarding means earlier access to registration for onboard activities. (We’ll talk more about that in tip #6.)

The embarkation experience will vary based on the port you’re sailing from. If you’re sailing from Miami, Virgin Voyages’ Terminal V is very well organized and boarding is quick and orderly. We were scheduled for earliest boarding group, and we were on the ship 20 minutes after we arrived at the terminal.

Boarding times are pretty strictly enforced. There are queues outside the terminal for each boarding time. If you arrive early, you’ll have to wait with your group for your time. You will not be able to board early if you arrive early.

3. Book dining reservations as soon as they open.

Meals are included on all Virgin Voyages cruises. That includes food from all quick service and table service restaurants onboard, as well room service. While all of the food onboard is pretty good, the very best, chef-curated meals can be found at the table service restaurants.

These high-end dining establishments are one of the selling points on Virgin Voyages, but actually getting a table at them takes a little bit of effort.

Virgin Voyages does not automatically schedule any meals for you. That means you’re not guaranteed a chance to dine at every (or any) table service restaurant onboard. You need to proactively make a reservation if you want eat at these table service restaurants.

Dining reservations open up 45 days before your sailing date. The exact time reservations open up reportedly varies, but it is typically around midnight in the departing port’s timezone. For example, if you are scheduled to sail on December 16, 2023 from Miami, your dining would open just after midnight ET the morning of November 1. You could potentially start checking the website in the late evening hours of October 31, around 11:30 PM, because sometimes they open early.

That said, the reservations don’t book up instantly. Unless you have a large party and are really set on a specific restaurant on a specific date and time, you probably don’t need to stay up till midnight to book your reservation. You should definitely plan to book in the morning of the day reservations open, though, for the best selection.

If you happen to miss the reservation window, don’t give up hope. All of the restaurants do have limited space for walk-ups and same-day reservations. This will just take more time and effort. There is also quick service dining available at all times.

4. See if you qualify for Deep Blue Extras.

Virgin Voyages is a relatively new cruise line, so they don’t have an established frequent sailor program just yet. While they build that up, they’re offering a collection of perks to seasoned sailors called Deep Blue Extras through the end of 2024.

Deep Blue Extras are pretty good, too. The perks include a $100 onboard drink credit, $10 per day specialty coffee credit, some complimentary laundry services and a free upgrade to premium wifi. You’ll also have access to a dedicated Sailor Services rep onboard, expedited boarding and a special happy hour.

Anyone who sailed with Virgin Voyages in 2021 (Sea-Blazers) or has sailed twice in 2022 and 2023 (Sea-Rovers) will receive Deep Blue Extras. If you qualify, these rewards will automatically be applied to your next sailing through 2024.

4.5 (Bonus tip!). Don’t tighten your Deep Blue Extras bracelet.

If you do qualify for Deep Blue Extras, you’ll get a special bracelet when you check in at the terminal. This one is a ribbon style bracelet with a one-way clasp — meaning you can tighten it but not loosen it.

If you put this bracelet on, make sure that you keep it loose enough to slide on and off. You don’t actually need this bracelet for anything, and all the perks are connected to your other NFC band. I think this is literally just to demonstrate your status on board.

I slipped mine off right away and just kept it in my purse, but I didn’t actually need it.

5. Use a hair tie for The Band.

When you check in at the terminal, they will give you a bracelet to use during your cruise. The Band is a contactless device that you need to use for pretty much everything on board. It serves as your room key, ID and credit card onboard, and you are required to tap it every time you get on and off the ship.

The NFC device itself is plastic with two attached loops. It is on a rope bracelet that wraps around your wrist twice and attaches with a small metal anchor. As you would expect from that description, the bracelet broke immediately.

Since the tap device is so important for your cruise, I’d recommend bringing a backup bracelet for it. A hair tie is the perfect solution. Slip the hair tie through one of the loops on The Band, and then pull one side of the hair tie through the other side of the hair tie to create a loop knot. Then you can wear the hair tie around your wrist and The Band won’t go anywhere.

Also, any small bracelet that can fit through these loops will do the trick.

6. Sign up for activities in the app as soon as you board.

As soon as you board, connect to the ship’s wifi and open the Virgin Voyages app. At this point, you will be able to see the full itinerary for your cruise and begin signing up for activities. To sign up for an activity, click “Add to Agenda.” (Hearting an activity doesn’t officially sign you up for it.)

Some events are “ticketed,” meaning that there is a cap on how many people can participate. Some ticketed activities have an additional fee (like cocktail classes or coffee tastings), while others are free (like yoga, spin classes and select stage shows). For ticketed events, you’ll need to tap your bracelet in order to enter.

You should sign up for all of your ticketed events as soon as you board, because some ticketed events fill up quickly. If any of these activities are important to you, be sure to check the itinerary and sign up quickly or you may miss out.

Other activities on board (like fitness classes, bingo and parties) are not ticketed. There is no formal cap on who can attend and they don’t check to see if you’ve registered before they let you participate. For these activities, adding them to your agenda is just to keep you organized.

Unfortunately, the Virgin App isn’t great and it’s even worse when everyone is using it at the same time. We experienced the app crashing, spinning and logging us out numerous times on both the basic and premium wifi. So I’d recommend heading to a bar and grabbing a drink for this process so it feels less annoying.

6.5 (Bonus Tip!). Link your party in advance.

Passengers staying in the same room should automatically be connected with each other in the app. That means that anyone in your cabin can register anyone else in your cabin for activities.

However, if you are traveling with friends or family in other cabins, you will need to manually connect them. You can complete this step at anytime, but ideally you should do it before you board. That way, anyone in your party can start booking for the entire party right away.

7. Plan for any in-person registrations.

While most things onboard can be booked in the app, there are a handful of sign-ups that have to be done in person on the ship. These are things with individual time slots, like tattoo and spa appointments and private karaoke registration, and they will be noted as such in the app. If you are set on any of these services/activities, do some research in advance and plan your first day accordingly.

For example, the tattoo parlor opens after the ship has left port and reaches international waters, often around 6 PM. The line for tattoo appointments forms early and gets long very quickly. Appointments on the last cruise day usually book up first, but they’re usually fully booked within a couple hours. If a tattoo is a priority, plan to be there about an hour before it’s scheduled to open for bookings.

Spa appointments book up less quickly, and karaoke spots usually open up daily. There might be other in-person registrations, but these are the three I know about. This is just something else you’ll want to take care of early for the best choice in times.

8. Skip luggage service when you board.

Most Virgin Voyages cruises have a luggage service available at embarkation and debarkation. The exact details vary based on your port, but here’s how it works at Terminal V in Miami.

There is a luggage check location outside the terminal. You can leave your bags here and then they will be delivered to your cabin that evening. The timing can vary, but on my cruise they were scheduled to be delivered by 6 PM.

This service can make it easier to navigate the terminal and board the ship without having to deal with your bags. This can also make security a bit easier. If you do use this service, just make sure you keep everything with you that you’ll need before 6 PM (including swimsuits, make up, meds, etc.)

It’s a good service, but I would actually recommend you skip luggage check when you board.

The main reason for that is because rooms are typically ready as soon as you board. On other cruise lines, that’s not the case, so you want to check your bags so you can enjoy the ship without lugging them around. But on Virgin Voyages, you can usually drop your bags in your room right away. This is easier than having to pack a day bag and then waiting for your bags to be delivered.

The Miami terminal is also easy to pull your bags through. The entire route is accessible by elevator, escalator, and/or ramp, so you won’t have issues with stairs. You do have to go through security, but you don’t have to remove anything from your bags like at the airport. If you have an early boarding time, this process can take less than 20 minutes.

8.5 (Bonus Tip!). Do use luggage service if you have a late debarkation time.

Similarly, Virgin Voyages also offers luggage check service on your debarkation day. You can leave your bags outside your door the night before you disembark, and then pick them up just before you exit the terminal. There is a cutoff time, but it’s usually around midnight.

This service does actually make sense if you have a late debarkation time. Most itineraries allow you to stay on the ship as late as 10:30 AM. However, access to the rooms is usually cut off before that. That means you have to keep your luggage with you.

If you plan to leave the ship late and want to have a relaxing morning, you don’t want to be lugging your bags. In this case, it’s a good idea to take advantage of the baggage service.

9. Pack the essentials.

This is not a complete packing list, but there are a few things you should be sure to pack for your Virgin Voyages cruise.

• Passport. There are some ways around this, depending on your itinerary, but it’s best to have it on you when cruising.
• Scarlet outfit. There are a few cruise parties and events, some of which vary by season, but the highlight of every Virgin Voyages cruise is Scarlet Night. Everyone wears red and there are a few events around the ship. It’s really fun and everyone gets into it, so this is the one onboard event you should definitely plan for.
• Sunblock and aloe. I’m usually pretty firmly in the buy-it-there camp, but that’s not always possible on a cruise ship. The stores onboard are only open when the ship is at sea and they are closed when the ship is at port. You might not always be able to buy these important items onboard when you need them.
• Portable charger . Virgin Voyages offers free wifi for everyone, so you might be on your phone more than you think. Plus, you’ll probably be using the app a lot to check the day’s schedules. A portable charger is nice to have in your bag. There are also many outlets around the ship, so you can also just bring an extra cord to keep with you.

10. Plan your flights properly.

If you are flying on either side of your cruise, selecting the right flight times is a delicate art.

Regardless of what port your sailing from, I would recommend flying in at least one day before you sail. Even if you don’t board until late in the afternoon or evening, I still wouldn’t recommend flying in the same day as your cruise departure. There’s always a chance that your flight gets delayed, you get rerouted, your bags get delayed, etc. You don’t want one bad travel day to cost you your entire cruise if you don’t make it there in time.

That same rule of thumb does not necessarily apply to your departure flight. It’s rare (but not impossible) that your cruise disembarkation will be drastically delayed. You can usually plan to fly out the same day that your cruise is scheduled to arrive. This of course varies based on your specific itinerary and port.

If you’re sailing from Miami, Virgin Voyages officially recommends booking a flight no earlier than noon on your arrival day.

Based on my recent personal experience, though, I would say that you could make a domestic flight as early as 10 AM. My disembarkation was scheduled for 8 AM, but I went down at 7:30 AM and walked right off the ship. There were no lines in the terminal, and I was at the Uber pick-up area by 7:42 AM. I arrived at the Miami airport at 8:02 AM and was through PreCheck security by 8:17 AM.

Everything might not always go that smoothly. However, I just wanted to share an actual timeline to help give you an idea.

Final Bonus Tip: Work with a travel advisor.

As I mentioned before, this trip was graciously gifted by our travel advisor at Travel With Character . • The cancellation policy varies depending on when you decide to cancel your cruise and how much of it you've paid. Before You Board

• Cruisers will need a current passport that's valid for six months past the end of the voyage date.
• Check-in for Virgin Voyages cruises takes place entirely on the line's mobile app. This means you don’t have to print cruise tickets or bring other printed documentation along.
• Boarding is typically around 2 p.m. and disembarkation times vary by cruise. Virgin Voyages instructs travelers to refer to their booking confirmation for additional information on timing and notes the departure time listed means the exact time the ship leaves the dock, so cruisers should plan accordingly to arrive well in advance.
• There are no specific luggage restrictions, but Virgin recommends limiting the number of bags you bring on board. If you are arriving at your departure destination by plane, be sure to consult airline luggage policies before your trip.
• Cruisers can book shore excursions – which Virgin calls "Shore Things" – in the Sailor App at least 120 days prior to sailing. Travelers booked in RockStar Quarters will be able to book shore excursions 135 days ahead of sailing. Payment is due at the time of booking.
• Passengers can secure dining reservations and entertainment starting 45 days before departure through the Sailor App or via a travel agent. Those booked in higher-level accommodations (Mega RockStar and RockStar Quarters) receive early access to reservations: 60 days prior to departure. What a whirlwind of a week on board our first-ever Virgin Voyages sailing. We just debarked Valiant Lady in Miami on Sunday, and are excited to share our thoughts after 8 days on board this $700M Lady ship. For those getting ready to board Valiant Lady out of Miami for the first time, we put together this quick Virgin Voyages Boarding Process – and give you tips on how you can get onto the ship even faster.

Virgin Voyages Boarding Pass: Don’t Panic!

If you’ve ever cruised before, you know the drill. Check in, print your boarding pass or save it to your phone, and head to the terminal. But, like everything else, Virgin Voyages decided to do things different! There are no bar codes, no boarding docs or luggage tags, and nothing in the app (other than your itinerary). Don’t panic! That’s all normal. As long as you’ve checked in and completed your health-screening, you are good to head to the terminal!

Getting to the Port

Virgin Voyages is located at Terminal V in Miami. Both Uber and Lyft recognized the terminal, so getting to the port should be fairly easy. As always, plan for Miami traffic. We checked in on both apps at least half a dozen times embark morning as we didn’t want to miss our early arrival window!

While general boarding started at 2pm, we arrived at the port area just before 1:30pm local time. Because of Virgin’s later embarkation start time, it was much easier to get around, and less chaotic in the port area. Virgin Voyages Terminal V is at the end of the Miami cruise port closest to downtown and the address is 718 N Cruise Blvd, Miami, FL 33132.

Bag Drop – Checking Bags

Due to the smaller size of the ship, and the reduced chaos in the port area, the porters were much easier to spot. Unlike other cruise lines, however, the porter asked for our room number. He then wrote our room number on a bag tag that he stapled to the handles of each of our bags.

Cruise tip: Do not remove the bag tag from your luggage as it’s also used for the debark process! The tag does tell you not to remove it for the duration of your cruise, however, we didn’t read that… Thankfully, they’re like airport bag tags; peel back the sticker and you can reattach it to the bag for debark. But just follow the instructions to make it even easier.

Embarkation

From the time I took the below picture (1:32pm) to the time we arrived on board the ship (1:52pm), a mere 20 minutes had passed. This embark process was SLICK!

Because we leveraged Virgin Voyages Match and Sea More Status Match Program, we were able to skip the queues and jump into the exclusive Sailing Club line. Not only did this allow us to get to the terminal right at 1:30 when check-in began, it allowed us to skip all the queues that were already forming for 1:45, 2:00, etc.

Cruise Tip: the “A Splash of Romance” package also provides you with Priority Boarding, so check this out if you don’t qualify for Sea More Status Match.

We joked that Virgin Voyages is the only cruise line we know that employs a “bouncer” to let you into the club. The crew member confirmed our name was on the list, gave me a Virgin Voyages wristband, and sent us into the terminal.

The terminal was still pretty empty at this point, so we skipped all of the empty queue lines inside and made our way directly up the escalator to check-in for passport review.

Passport Review and Check-In

The queue here took longer, but still, maybe only 10 minutes. Check-in was a breeze; the agent reviewed our passports and gave us The Band. Described by Virgin Voyages as, “a sleek wearable technology made from recycled ocean plastic that will unlock voyage adventures for future Sailors,” The Band did not disappoint. From accessing your stateroom, to paying for purchases on board or even on land at The Beach Club in Bimini, this thing was slick. And there’s a series of sayings on each of the bands (I was “Feelin’ Nauti”).

Once we had our newest fashion accessory attached, we headed to the cruise line’s version of TSA Pre-Check. We placed our items onto the conveyor, walked through the x-ray, and collected our belongings on the other side. All in, this process took less than 3 minutes.

From here, we headed toward the ship. One quick tap of The Band to the handheld devices at the terminal door, and we were cleared to board!

Final Thoughts on Virgin Voyages Boarding Process

This was probably the easiest embark we’ve had in a long time. The later boarding time allowed the chaos of the Miami cruise port to die down and the benefit of Priority Boarding is HUGE. I highly recommend reviewing the Sea More Status Match or A Splash of Romance packages. If neither of those apply, keep in mind that booking through Rocky also gets you Priority Boarding.

I’m thankful that there were experienced Virgin Voyages sailors there who guided us to the Virgin Voyages Sailing Club line, otherwise, we would have likely gotten into the longer queue. Keep this in mind if you have Priority Boarding. But don’t try to fake it. The “bouncer” has a list and checks it twice to confirm you’re on it. It was odd that there were no boarding passes or indicators in the app; the employee checking names on a paper list seemed dated, but it actually added to the experience creating the bouncer vibe we joked about.

You can tell the terminal is new. It still has that “new cruise terminal” smell! Everything was clean, crisp, and in working order. Even the bathrooms were pretty!

Check-in took about 10 minutes to get through the queue, and passport review was easy. We received The Band for our wrists and headed through security screening before tapping our wrists on the handheld devices.

All in, 20 minutes from getting to the terminal to being on the ship was amazing, especially considering it was all new and we were taking a TON of pictures and videos.

Even on closed looped cruises it looks like Virgin (Scarlet Lady) is requiring Passports. My daughter will have to obtain hers before we cruise I guess. She needs it anyway. 🙂

Under Guest Obligations:

3.2.    A passport is required for a Guest to board the Vessel. In addition, upon embarkation, the Guest shall have in his or her possession, and assumes all responsibility for obtaining, all visas and/or any other travel and health documents required by any governmental authority, and if s/he fails to do so the Carrier shall have no further obligation to transport or to furnish transportation to the Guest. Proper travel documentation and eligibility to travel is required at the embarkation and throughout the Cruise. The Guest is advised to consult his or her travel agent or appropriate governmental authorities concerning required documentation for travel. The Guest shall indemnify the Carrier for all penalties, fines, taxes, charges, losses and expenses imposed upon or incurred by the Carrier due to the Guest's failure to have proper documentation or otherwise comply with applicable laws or regulations of any kind.

Passports are definitely needed for Cuba.  It's possible that they will allow travel without one for Costa Maya and Puerto Plata, but it's easier to write the terms and conditions for the strictest condition.

Thanks 😊 Yes, I knew of course for Cuba but our cruise is for Bimini and Costa Maya. (Closed Loop) And like I said my daughter might as well get her passport now anyway.  Wonder what would happen if she showed up with just her birth certificate and Drivers License? Yikes, in reality I would never take that chance!

Since you have a whole year till sailings start, yeah, plenty of time for a passport. 🙂

Like many others, that would be enough to get on board - Virgin may want to do things differently, but requiring passports for close loop cruises is not likely to be one of them.

Big Change If You’re Cruising on Virgin Voyages

• They’re strictly 18+
• Their design and decor is very contemporary
• They have an eco-friendly focus
• They have the first-ever-at-sea tattoo parlor
• They have no main dining room and no buffet
• They have a “no tipping” atmosphere

(To be fair, there are some other cruise lines that feature some of the above. But none offer all of these at once.)

Another difference from most other cruise lines is that Virgin Voyages has been, at least for their sailings out of Miami, they require all of their sailors (read: passengers) to have a valid passport with an expiration date at least 6 months after the voyage end date (a handful of other cruise lines also require this, but the vast majority do not). From their website, prior to June 20, 2023:

Are passports and visas required to sail? While our Sailors are free to voyage at will, some global rules for travel still apply. Our voyages require our Sailors to have a valid passport with an expiration date at least 6 months after the voyage end date. Based on your country of citizenship, some ports may also require a necessary visa to enter.

The interesting thing is that this is something even the U.S. government doesn’t require. From U.S. Customs & Border Protection :

Most cruises beginning and ending in the same location are considered “closed-loop,” meaning they begin and end at the same port in the United States and travel within the Western Hemisphere. For instance, if you board a cruise ship at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and after visiting at least one foreign port of call, such as Bermuda, or Cancun, and return to Fort Lauderdale, you have taken a closed loop cruise. U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises will be able to enter or depart the country with proof of citizenship, such as an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL), a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where he or she was born) or passport, and if 16 or older, a government issued driver’s license, picture ID, denoting photo, name, and date of birth.

To be fair, Virgin Voyages was never 100% strict with this rule. They’ve always had some loopholes to their “Passports Required” regulation. They’re aware that the U.S. government has been VERY behind in processing passports and passport renewals. So if you called Sailor Services (read: Virgin Voyages’ Customer Services) shortly before your cruise and told them your passport was still being processed and might not be in your hands at the time of your cruise, you could get special permission, via an email they’d send you, to board just with your government-issued birth certificate and your enhanced driver’s license ( which is not the same as a regular driver’s license ) or other form of government ID.

But if you just went to board without a passport, because you’ve never had one and had no intentions of getting one, and hadn’t gotten the special permission ahead of time, you were usually out of luck. You wouldn’t be allowed to board and the ship would leave without you. Whomp whomp.

But then Virgin Voyages’ FAQ about passports and visas suddenly changed. Here’s what it said on June 20th, 2023:

Are passports and visas required to sail? Our voyages require Sailors to have a valid passport with an expiration date at least 6 months after the voyage end date. Additionally, depending on your country of citizenship, certain ports may also require a visa for entry. However, we understand that spontaneous getaways sometimes occur without sufficient time for passport arrangements. If you fall into this category and you are sailing out of Miami or San Juan, Puerto Rico, on a closed loop voyage, and are a US citizen, we can make an exception to the passport requirement. In such cases, you will need to present your government issued ID along with your original US State-issued birth certificate or Naturalization certificate. Note: If you have a Puerto Rico birth certificate, please make sure it’s the ‘new version’ that is dated July 1, 2010, or later. Please keep in mind, in the event that an unexpected situation arises and you need to return to the US by air, a passport will be necessary.

The next day, June 21st, it had changed yet again:

Are passports and visas required to sail? Our voyages require Sailors to have a valid passport with an expiration date at least 6 months after the voyage end date. Additionally, depending on your country of citizenship, certain ports may also require a visa for entry. However, we understand that spontaneous getaways sometimes occur without sufficient time for passport arrangements. If you fall into this category and you are sailing out of Miami, on an eligible closed-loop voyage, and are a United States citizen, we can make an exception to the passport requirement. In such cases, you will need to present one of the following documents: Original valid US Passport Original valid US Passport Card Original valid Trusted Traveler Card (NEXUS, FAST) Or one of the below combinations of documents: Original or copy of your state-issued birth certificate AND a physical Government-issued photo ID – Puerto Rico birth certificates issued prior to July 1, 2010 are not acceptable – Hospital-issued birth certificates are not acceptable Original Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by the Department of State AND a physical Government-issued photo ID Original Certificate of Naturalization issued by US Citizenship and Immigration Services AND a physical Government-issued photo ID In the unlikely event of a medical emergency or unexpected departure from the vessel, a passport will be necessary. Please keep in mind, the above guidelines are based on government regulations, which are subject to change at any time.

The June 23rd update is what’s still on Virgin Voyages’ website , as of this writing.

The new verbiage caused all sorts of discussions on Virgin Voyages message groups…were they just putting into writing what was common knowledge by those “in the know?” Or were they really going to let sailors board without a passport, as a matter of course?

Fast forward a few weeks and someone I know from one of these message groups, a guy named Zach, went on a Virgin Voyages cruise with his wife. His spouse had her passport, but Zach’s passport was still en route. He had his birth certificate and driver’s license at the ready, as well as the email that said he had Virgin’s OK to board – but he planned to not show them the email unless pressed.

When they got to the port and ready to check in, here’s what he said happened:

Once it was noticed on the app that my passport was missing I was put into a separate line that had about 4 kiosks. While the others (people who did have their passports) had about 20 kiosks. Only took 10 mins for us to get through and there was 6 people in front of us.

He said it was a total breeze to go through.

My only concern was there was something on his record that said he had Virgin’s prior permission to sail without his passport, but he said no:

0% chance they did, they never looked at anything except the app, no name, id or anything

Granted, this is just one person’s experience. But based on Zach’s experience, ts APPEARS that Virgin is no longer “requiring” you to have a passport to board.

That being said, there are still PLENTY of reasons why you SHOULD have a passport on a Virgin Voyages cruise:

• They do still technically require one. Sort of.
• IF something were to happen to you while in a foreign country you were visiting while on your cruise, having a passport with you makes it a WHOLE LOT easier and faster for you and yours to get back to the United States.

I wish all cruise lines that make stops outside of the US required passports – speaking as an airline person. I can’t tell you how many times, especially working in ATL or FLL, that someone missed their boat (because landing at noon for a 4pm sailing is a great idea with your family of 6 – flying out of Newark that same morning in the winter) did not have a passport, or just had a passport card. I’d always offer to catch them up by flying them to Nassau or Freeport, but of course they’d have no passport or just the land-crossing-only card. Then it’s my fault I ruined their cruise.

Are you looking to cruise without a passport? For U.S. citizens, passports are not required for all cruises. While we do recommend having a passport just in case, these are the top cruise destinations you can visit without one.

Can you cruise without a passport?

Yes, you can cruise without a passport (in certain situations). For U.S. citizens, a passport is not required for closed loop cruises. A closed loop cruise is a cruise that begins and ends in the same U.S. port.

For a closed loop cruise, a birth certificate and a government issued ID are the only forms of documentation required. The birth certificate must be the original or a certified copy with the raised seal. A photocopy will not be permitted.

Keep in mind that these requirements are for U.S. citizens only. For all other nationalities, a passport is generally required to cruise.

Of course, if you are traveling internationally, U.S. citizens will need a passport. A passport is required for all international flights and for any cruise that embarks or disembarks in a foreign country.

Further, passports are also required for cruises that begin and end in different locations (open loop cruises).

You can cruise without a passport to the Caribbean

The Caribbean is one of the most popular cruise destinations, and the good news is that you can cruise the Caribbean without a passport. Many of the newest mega-ships from contemporary cruise lines visit popular islands in the Caribbean region. There are also several U.S. departure points for Caribbean cruises .

The Caribbean offers that picturesque tropical vacation of which you are dreaming. With itineraries generally divided into Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Southern Caribbean routes, you will have plenty of choices when it comes to a Caribbean cruise.

Which islands are visited does vary slightly by the cruise ship and cruise line. However, all islands offer a variety of popular activities like beach breaks, island tours, snorkeling, and historic and cultural tours. There will also be adventure activities like zip lining and off-road tours at most ports of call.

Again, do keep in mind if you decide to cruise without a passport, you might not be able to get off the ship in certain locations. For example, the Caribbean island of Martinique requires that all cruise passengers have a valid passport to go ashore.

You can cruise to the Bahamas without a passport

The Bahamas is another popular cruise destination that you can visit without a passport. Normally, these cruises depart from the East Coast of the United States, primarily from Florida homeports. If you are looking for a shorter duration cruise or just a quick getaway, then a Bahamas cruise is definitely for you.

While you are probably familiar with  Nassau, Bahamas , this region is also home to many cruise line private destinations. These private islands offer exclusive access for passengers sailing with the cruise line. These islands usually offer included food, beach access with loungers, and other amenities.

For many, the seasonal cruise destination of Alaska is high on their bucket lists. An  Alaskan cruise  even lures those who wouldn’t necessarily consider a cruise. These vacations are more about the destination than the cruise ship. Cruises to Alaska appeal to nature lovers, photographers, and explorers. On an Alaskan cruise, you can set off in search of glacial vistas, wildlife encounters, and some of the freshest seafood.

Most major cruise lines offer sailings in this region. The most popular U.S. embarkation port for Alaska cruises is Seattle. Though, there are also roundtrip cruises from Vancouver and one-way itineraries.

These itineraries usually include port stops in  Juneau ,  Ketchikan , and  Skagway , Alaska. These itineraries can visit Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia as well. Do you need a passport for Hawaii?

The accessibility of the Hawaiian islands makes it a popular cruise destination especially for those looking to stay within the United States.

Most Hawaiian cruises depart from the island of Oahu, visiting the Big Island and Maui. Some cruises also visit the island of Kauai. With attractions like  Pearl Harbor , Waikiki Beach, and a  selection of luaus , Oahu definitely requires a couple days to explore either pre-cruise or post cruise.

The  Big Island ‘s landscape is very diverse with volcanoes, mountainous terrain, beaches, rainforests, and everything in between. One of our favorite excursions was a helicopter ride over the island.

An over-night visit to the  island of Maui  is common on a Hawaiian cruise as well. Some of Maui’s most popular attractions include the Road to Hana and Haleakala Crater.

Several cruise lines normally have ships making stops in the region. As the only ship sailing in Hawaii year-round,  NCL’s Pride of America  is an easy choice. This Americana-themed ship usually sails a 7-night round-trip itinerary from Honolulu offering a comprehensive Polynesian experience.

You can cruise without a passport to Bermuda

If you are looking to cruise without a passport, Bermuda is another popular choice. This British territory is home to some of the friendliest people and arguably the best beaches and natural landscapes in the Atlantic. 

Given that the island is further north than many of the other popular tropical destinations, the weather is a bit more seasonal here . Therefore, cruises to Bermuda generally occur from April to October. Still, that is almost half of the year to find some vacation time to enjoy all that  Bermuda has to offer .

Many of the major cruise lines usually have ships that visit Bermuda. Most even offer two or three day stays to enjoy this beautiful location. You can use this time to explore Kings Wharf and other popular stops like St. George’s and Hamilton.

A Bermuda cruise might be the perfect choice for those living in the Northeastern United States as there will be no flying involved. Most Bermuda cruises leave from New York or Cape Liberty, New Jersey. A few also depart from Boston, MA, Baltimore, MD, and occasionally some southern ports like Florida.

You can go on a Mexican Riviera cruise without a passport

For those living on the West Coast, the Mexican Riviera might be the perfect destination to which to cruise without a passport.

Ports in the Mexican Riviera, like  Cabo San Lucas  and  Puerto Vallarta , offer amazing beaches, immersive cultural and historical experiences, and a festive atmosphere day and night. The Mexican Riviera is much like the Caribbean for West Coasters.

Like many of the tropical cruise regions, there are plenty of beach breaks, island tours, food tastings, and nature excursions to experience in the Mexican Riviera. Do you need a passport to cruise Canada and New England?

Last but not least, you can also cruise without a passport to Canada and New England . Canada/New England cruise itineraries are seasonal, running from May to October with the majority of sailings occurring during the Fall.

As native New Englanders, we sometimes take the fall foliage for granted. However, this seasonal change is a sight to behold for many.

Popular ports of call include Boston, MA; Bar Harbor, ME; Portland, ME; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and St. John, New Brunswick. Each of these ports offers its own historic and coastal charm.

In our homeport of Boston, you can learn more about the founding of the United States by trekking the  Boston Freedom Trail . You can dive into the history of the Titanic when in Halifax. Or, you can see the Victorian era architecture and historic homes of Portland and visit Arcadia National Park in Bar Harbor.

Our local cuisine is another great reason to cruise to Canada and New England. Securing a passport can be a hassle. 

New applicants can expect to spend $130 for a passport book, plus a $35 acceptance fee. Routine wait times are 10 to 13 weeks , and that doesn’t include mailing times, according to the State Department. Paying a $60 fee can expedite the process, but travelers will still need to wait seven to nine weeks for processing.

That means spur-of-the-moment international trips without a passport can be impossible to pull off.

Puerto Rico passport requirements

Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory and popular Caribbean destination , is about as easy to fly to as any state if you have a state-issued ID. 

The island does not require a passport among U.S. citizens.

US Virgin Islands passport requirements

The U.S. Virgin Islands, another Caribbean destination, allows domestic travelers to enter without a passport. 

"If you are a U.S. citizen a passport is not required, but it still serves as the best identification when traveling," the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism's website says. "Otherwise, you must be prepared to show evidence of citizenship when departing the islands, such as a raised-seal birth certificate and government-issued photo ID."

Northern Mariana Islands passport requirements

Passports are not required to visit the Northern Mariana Islands, a  U.S. commonwealth  made up of 14 islands, including Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

Guam passport requirements

The Guam Visitors Bureau says U.S. citizens are required to show a U.S. passport, but photo ID and proof of citizenship may be accepted "on a case-by-case basis."  

Canada passport requirements

Citizens who are members of the NEXUS program , which expedites entry for pre-screened travelers, can present their membership as proof of identification when traveling, according to the Canadian government's website .

Travelers who do not have a passport can apply for a NEXUS card but will be able to use it at land or marine crossings only, not airports .

A NEXUS application processing fee costs $50 for a five-year membership, and children under 18 can apply with no fee. Application processing takes 12 to 14 months, according to the Department of Homeland Security .  

Additionally,  the State Department  says travelers under 16 do not need a passport to enter Canada; they need only proof of U.S. citizenship.

Closed-loop cruise passport requirements

Travelers on closed-loop cruises – sailings that depart and end at the same U.S. port and travel within the Western Hemisphere – do not need a passport, according to Customs and Border Protection.

U.S. citizens can enter the country with a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. If under 16, a U.S. citizen can present their birth certificate , certificate of naturalization or consular birth report abroad.

Customs and Border Protection says U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises can enter or depart a country on the cruise with proof of citizenship, but some destination countries "may require" a passport.

"In those instances, the cruise lines would require passengers to have a valid passport to board even if it is not a U.S. requirement," the agency's website reads. "You should check with your cruise ship, travel agent, and destination country to confirm the requirements to enter the foreign countries you will visit."
