Private Island Taxi Tour Prior to leaving the UK we looked online for a Company that could offer us a bespoke tour of the Island of Rhodes . We came across ” Rhodes Taxi Tours ” and excellent communications followed together with a list of suggestions from them of places we might like to consider . We booked a tour together with our choosen date and received confirmation from them but no requirement for a deposit as payment ( for the quoted sum ) would be made to the driver at the end of the tour . On the day prior to our trip I received an e-mail confirming our booking and advising us that our driver would pick us up in our hotels reception the following day at 08.30 . The following morning our driver arrived spot on time in a lovely airconditioned mercedes and we discussed and altered our itinerary slightly as we had already visited some of the locations . Our driver Nikos Zachariadis was brilliant , nothing was too much trouble and we visited all of the places we had hoped to see .He came up with a load of brilliant suggestions including dropping us at the top of the valley of the butterflies and meeting us at the bottom . This was repeated in Lindos where access into the old town is tricky to say the least ! At the end of the day ( again at our request ) we visited a local Greek Taverna overlooking the sea where we had an amazing sea food meal and there was Nikos waiting to return us to our hotel . A brilliant day and with the cool oasis of the car between all of our stops . Well done Nikos and Rhodes Taxi Tours !!

Full Day Private Tour Our day spent with Nikos was filled with memories from start to finish. We started in old town and finished in Lindos with a climb of the Acropolis. To end the tour we stopped for a Greek lunch at a wonderful restaurant with magnificent views. We selected our fish to be cooked and finished with a delicious fruit and dessert platter. We would highly recommend Rhodes Taxi Tours for anyone looking for a wonderful guided tour of Rhodes.

Excellent! My husband and I were in Rhodes for only a few days and wanted to see the highlights of the island. We found Rhodes Taxi Tour online, and Elli was very helpful in booking a tour for the following day. We knew it was short notice and didn’t expect to be able to schedule anything, but Elli worked out the details and made it happen. Our driver, Dominic was wonderful! He was shared with us not only the history of the island but the culture and current events as well. He was professional and enjoyable to talk with as he tailored the tour to exactly what we wanted to see and do. Dominic also secured a taxi to the airport for the following morning for us. My husband and I are both so happy we chose to do a private tour of Rhodes and would highly recommend!!

Excellent tour! We visited the port of Rhodes as a stop on our cruise and had booked a full day tour with Rhodes Taxi. We had the pleasure of having George who took us to see the highlights of the island. We started in Old Town where he was able to drive us through the streets before they closed them to cars at 9 am. We stopped at a harbor then the Acropolis, where George provided us with the history of both. On our way to Lindos, we stopped at a pottery factory where we had a demonstration of a vase made the old fashioned way with a wheel motored by foot. Off to Lindos for a panoramic view and a visit to the old town. We walked up to visit the Acropolis. It was a little rushed as we only had 1 hour to climb up and visit but it was well worth the climb. We then went to a small fishing village where we had a delicious lunch by the water before returning back to Rhodes. We definitely recommend this tour and if we return, we would book with George again. He was very friendly and knowledgeable!

STOP 1 Rhodes Old Town

island tour rhodes

We will start our tour with a drive around the walls of the Old Town of Rhodes – the biggest inhabited medieval town in Europe. It was built in 1300s from the Knights of the order of St. John. The Medieval Town of Rhodes is in the World Heritage Sites List of UNESCO. This list recognizes the exceptional value of a cultural site so that it may be protected for the benefit of all Humanity. If you want we can extend the duration of the tour with 1 hour and you can have also some free time to go through the Old town and explore it on your own.

STOP 2 Mandraki Harbor & Annunciation Church

Mandraki port is situated in the new part of the town where you will see some very impressive monumental Italian buildings. Here at the harbor entrance is believed that once stood the great statue of the Colossus of Rhodes – one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World. We will stop for pictures of the area and you will be able also to enter and see the Church of the Annunciation which is the biggest Orthodox church in the town with very beautiful handmade paintings on the walls and spectacular chandeliers.

STOP 3 Colossus of Rhodes

The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the most ambitious and tallest statue( between 30 to 33 meters high) of the Hellenistic period. The statue was a depiction of the Greek Titan Helios and was meant to celebrate the victory over the Dimitrios the Besieger (ruler of Cyprus) in 305 BC. Bearing a striking resemblance to the Statue of Liberty in the United States, the Colossus of Rhodes stood for no more than 56 years when a strong earthquake destroyed it. In the seventh century A.D., the Arabs conquered Rhodes and broke the remains of the Colossus up into smaller pieces and sold it as scrap metal. Legend says it took 900 camels to carry away the pieces. A sad end for what must have been a majestic work of art.

STOP 4 Rhodes Acropolis

Now we will continue through the city and see more of the great Italian architecture. We will stop for pictures also at the Northern tip of the island where the Mediterranean and the Aegean seas meet each other. Then we will drive to Monthe Smith Hill where you can enjoy exceptional panoramic views of the city and the seashore, and also see the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, the impressive open-air ancient Stadium and the Amphitheatre.

STOP 5 Filerimos Hill

island tour rhodes

Next in our program is the famous Filerimos Hill. This place was used as the citadel of the ancient town of Ialyssos. The hill includes the foundations of the temple of Athena Polias, an Early Christian basilica, and a small subterranean Byzantine church. There is a road that sets off from the square that leads to the westernmost point of the hill. The road to Golgotha used by Catholics was dotted with holy icon-stands and bronze reliefs. At the end of the road of Martyrdom stands an 18 meters tall cross raised by the Italians in 1930..

STOP 6 Butterfly Valley

island tour rhodes

For the Summer period between the end of June and mid-September, we can substitute the stop at Filerimos Hill with the beautiful Valley of Butterflies. The valley is a natural reserve, unique of its kind. You can enjoy a peaceful walk and admire the nature and the butterflies. Your driver will wait for you on the other side of the park. If you want to see both Filerimos Hill and the Butterfly Valley than we need to increase the duration of the tour.

STOP 7 Lindos Panoramic view & St. Paul's Bay

Little before we reach the beautiful village of Lindos we will stop at a place for a panoramic view of the village together with its Acropolis on the top. Before the village we will also visit the picturesque St. Paul’s Bay. It is claimed that St Paul passed by here in the year 51 AD to preach Christianity to the Rhodians. There is a small church built there after his name. We will make a stop for pictures to capture this stunning view.

STOP 8 Lindos Village and Acropolis

You will have at least one hour stay to explore the village and to visit its famous Acropolis. The Acropolis in Lindos is the second most popular Acropolis in Greece after the Parthenon in Athens.

STOP 9 Rhodes Pottery Factory

Upon request, during your tour, you can also have a stop at a pottery factory. You will be able to see how beautiful ceramics are made. Rhodes has a long history of pottery going back many centuries at least to the time of the ancient cities. Replicas of designs produced in those times are still been manufactured today together with new modern designs in a younger generation.

STOP 10 Lunch Time

Now we will have a relaxing stop at an outstanding traditional Greek tavern. We can also arrange a visit to a spectacular seaside tavern near the sea so that you can enjoy your lunch and the sea breeze.

We will return back to the city of Rhodes and we can leave you directly to your hotel or ship or at any point of interest

Full Day Private Tour of Rhodes May 2022 • Nicholas was an incredible guide of Rhodes. He drove us all around the island, making sure we saw all the sights that the island is known for, as well as local destinations and businesses, including lunch at a beautiful tavern. He was so engaging, funny, and gave us a real understanding of life on the island. Not to mention, he so generously gifted my family olive oil, made by his own family. Thanks for a great day, Nicholas!

The best tour from Greece This tour was my favorite tour in all of Greece because of our guide, Nikos!!! Not only the beauty of the island, the history, the great food and wine, it was the (Laughter)!! Nikos kept us laughing and thought us (clever) with the full day of sightseeing and banter. He knew the perfect locations to sweep us off our feet with the history of Rhodes, and Wow, there is some wonderful history here. The best locations for stopping for coffee, water, olive oil, pottery. Our highlight was our lunch location, I actually cried because of the beauty, the food, the atmosphere and the music all combined to turn out to be the most memorable day in all of Greece. I recommend this very intelligent, witty and knowledgeable guide. You can thank me later ❤️

Another great day with Mr Nicholas touring When we landed in Rhodes on our cruise ship Mr Nicholas who I have toured with a couple of times was already waiting besides the ship for my friends and myself to take us on a tour to Lindos . Because I had such nice experiences with Nicholas a couple of times before I had contacted him again and received fast and detailed responses of what and where he could take us for the day. We had a great ride to the Mandraki Harbour , Smith Hill and up to the Filerimos Hill with the monastery and the big cross and the beautiful view after which we went towards Lindos . Because I had been to the Acropolis before and my friends did not want to climb the big hill we just went to the village and the St Paul’s Bay . Last time Nicholas had taken us to a very nice little roadside restaurant with a great view and we had a beautiful Greek lunch there I had asked him to take my new friends there again and asked him to order a very nice Greek lunch with a fish for the 3 of us . It was wonderful and we did not leave much on our plates other than the bones . After going by some very nice beaches he took us back towards the port . We had a wonderful day together and I can certainly recommend that you ask for Mr Nicholas when you are in Rhodes.!

The Best Things To do in Rhodes, Greece: A Rhodes Itinerary

Greece has thousands of Islands and while I’ve been to several (with plans to visit many more) I have to say that Rhodes is one of my favourites. The island is big enough to keep you busy for several days while maintaining the island charm. Known for its castles, beaches, wineries and incredible history, Rhodes has so much to offer any traveller. In this post I’m sharing what I think are the best things to do in Rhodes, Greece and my suggestions for a Rhodes itinerary.

Hannah Logan wearing a yellow dress in front of church ruins in Rhodes

How to Get to Rhodes, Greece

Getting to Rhodes is easy since the island is big enough to have its own airport. Many inter-island Greek airlines will fly to Rhodes as well as budget airlines from other countries, although these may be seasonal. From the airport, if you haven’t arranged to rent a car, you can take the public bus to Rhodes Town (about 1 hour and 3 Euro) and then change buses there for your final destination. Or, hire a taxi. Taxis have flat rates depending on your destination so look to the sign at the taxi stall outside the airport.

You can also arrive to Rhodes by boat. There are a number of ferries that make their way here, however, there are also 3 different marinas where the boats come into the Old Town. They are all within walking distance from the walls of the Old City. But you can also choose to take the bus or hire a taxi.

Tip: If booking ferries in Greece, book in advance to ensure you get the sailing time you want, they can book up really quickly in busy season. I use Ferry Hopper.

How to Get Around Rhodes, Greece

Like with most Greek Islands, the easiest and fastest way to get around the island is to rent a car. You can also choose to rent a motorbike or quad but Rhodes is quite large so a car is your best bet. If you would prefer not to rent a car you can hire taxis, use the public bus network, or join day trips and group tours (this is what I did).

How Long to Stay in Rhodes, Greece

Sunset over Rhodes

Some people come to Rhodes just for a day on cruises which is long enough to explore the old town area but not much more. I’ve also heard people suggest three days which will allow you a bit more time to explore the island. Based on my experience, however, I think you should spend at least 5 days in Rhodes. This will allow you to explore Old Town, tour the island by land, explore the coast and swimming bays by sea, have a beach day, and spend a day in Lindos. If you do plan on renting a car, there are tons more smaller towns to explore so you can easily stay a week or more. I also highly suggest adding at least 2 extra nights to your time here to take the ferry over to Symi island . Many people do it as a day trip but it’s incredible and worth spending a couple of nights.

The Best Time to Go to Rhodes

One of the most important thing to know about the Greek islands is that they are seasonal. The season in Rhodes typically lasts 7 months, April-October, with most businesses shutting down outside of those months. That’s not to say you can’t visit during off-season but you will likely be disappointed. In the summer, it gets incredibly busy and crowded. Prices also reflect peak season. In my opinion, the best time to go is May and September. The weather is still warmer but you have better prices and less people.

Where to Stay in Rhodes, Greece

Bed in Ancient Knights Hotel

When it comes to where to stay in Rhodes you have plenty of options. Most people I met stayed in one of the smaller resort towns. These types of places are often included in vacation packages and will have your beachfront access and probably even a pool. If you rent a car its easy to get around but many tours will also pick up resort guests as well.

Personally, I’m not a resort person so I chose to stay in the walls of Old Town which was magical. I felt like I was walking in and out of a castle every day. I had a huge variety of places to eat in both Old and New Town and its really nice to see earlier in the mornings and in the evening before/after the cruise ship guests and day trippers have come and gone. Plus, the hotels here are small boutique spots which I love, especially as I try to support small local businesses. That being said, Old Town is a pedestrian zone so you need to be comfortable carrying/wheeling your luggage over some cobblestone streets since the taxi can only drop you at the nearest gate (my walk was less than 5 minutes from the Sea Gate).

I stayed at Ancient Knights Luxury Suites right in Old Town. It was a beautiful property that almost felt like a castle within a castle. My room was very spacious with a view to the street below and inner courtyard but it was very quiet at night. It also had an incredible shower and was run by the kindest people. I highly recommend it and would go back in a second. You can book your stay here.

If you are looking for a hostel you can check out Rhodes Backpackers

Or, if you are more of a resort person I heard very good things about  Kreston Royal Euphoria Resort

The Best Things to Do in Rhodes: A Suggested 5 Day Itinerary

So, what is there to do in Rhodes, Greece? Lots! As I said earlier, I recommend spending at least 5 days in Rhodes itself. Here’s how I suggest you spend that time.

Day 1: Uncover Old and New Town

Hannah sitting in front of a gate in old town rhodes with the castle in the background

Rhodes Old Town and New Town are right beside each other and will make for a full but fun day of exploring. Probably more than a day if you are big into museums.

If you love photography then get up in the morning to explore. The city doesn’t really start to come to life until 9am or later so you can easily get in a couple of hours to take photos without all the crowds.

Rhodes Old Town has tons of winding alleyways and cobblestone streets lined with shops, cafes, bars, and tavernas. The busiest ones will always be on the main area so don’t be afraid to get off the tourist trail and head down the smaller, narrow alleyways to see what you find. My top recommendations for things to see in Rhodes Old Town are:

  • Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. It is a museum if you choose to go inside, or you can just admire the castle from the courtyard for free.
  • The Street of Knights: In my opinion, best in the morning or evening
  • The Suleman Mosque
  • The Roloi Clock Tower: climb to the top for beautiful views. I went at sunset and it was stunning.
  • Church of the Virgin Mary of the Burgh: Church ruins, great lighting early in the morning if you want to take photos
  • Hippocrates Square; great for people watching
  • The gates and walls of old town (note: You can walk the walls, it’s 3 euro. To be honest, I wasn’t that impressed. If you have lots of time sure but don’t rush to do it).
  • The harbor front area including the Fort of St. Nicholas and the 3 windmills

If you like there are several museums you can visit as well. Personally, I preferred being outside and exploring the streets. There are a number of signs, especially around the Street of Knights, with information on what you are seeing and the history that you can read for free.

Fisherman on a pier at sunset

For the evening, head to New Town. It’s about a 20 minute walk. New Town also has number of modern shops and tavernas. It’s also home to Savvas Sandals. Savvas Sandals is a multi-generational family-run business that makes, you guessed it, sandals. The sandals are leather and come in dozens of styles and colours for men and women. The best part is that they will custom make you a pair in your size and colour if it’s not in stock. I had a pair made for me in 24 hours. Additionally, if you struggle to find the right fit they can fit the straps directly on your fit to ensure everything is right. There are lots of places that sell sandals in Rhodes but trust me, this is where you want to go. It’s one of the best thing to do in Rhodes.

For sunset, stay in New Town and head to the beach area across from the Statue of Diagoras. There is a big pier in the water here facing Turkey. The sunset views from here are fantastic, don’t miss it.

Day 2: Explore the Island on a Tour

Hannah on the wall of castle ruins overlooking the sea

Rhodes is a fairly big island with lots to see so I suggest renting a car or doing a day trip to explore the other end of the island, the interior villages, and some of the other castles. I did this day trip which took us to Kritinia Castle, a Venetian castle ruin with incredible views across the sea. We also did a wine and honey tasting just outside the town of Embonas. Rhodes is known for its dry white wine and sweet wines. They also have some really interesting flavoured honey like thyme, pine, and orange. One of the most interesting stops we did was at Elafos Hotel where we had the option to do a very short but steep hike up to Villa de Vecchi which was meant to be Mussolini’s retirement residence. He never saw it and today the villa is in crumbling decay but cool to see if you like urban exploring and the views are amazing.

I really enjoyed the day tour and our guide provided a lot of great tips and interesting information of the island. You can book the full day Rhodes island tour here.

Day 3: Swim the Bays of Rhodes with a Boat Trip

Hannah posing on the side of a boat in bikini off the coast of Rhodes, Greece

Exploring Rhodes by land is great but you should also explore it by water. If you walk along the Rhodes Marina you will see dozens of boat trips on offer. From speed boats to slow cruises. Sunset drinking tours and full day island tours- you can take your pick. I chose to do a full day cruise with swim spots and on board lunch (with plenty of included wine and beer!). It was a beautiful day cruising up and down the coast and stopping in some of the best bays to swim and relax. It was one of my favourite things to do in Rhodes. I booked and recommend this tour.

Day 4: Visit Lindos

Hannah sitting on the walls of the acropolis in Lindos, Rhodes

Lindos is one of the most popular places to visit on the island of Rhodes, and for good reason. The white-washed walls of this town are reminiscent of the villages in the Cyclades. It’s also a very historical town, first mentioned in Homer’s The Illiad. History lovers today will appreciate the sprawling acropolis and temple ruins overlooking the town. Finally, Lindos has some great beaches as well.

Now, it’s important to note that Lindos is also one of the most popular places to visit on the island which means it can fill up and get very busy very quickly. After all, it’s quite small. I visited on a day trip between the hours of 11-3 and it was packed. It was also incredibly hot (it’s the hottest place on the island). However, I’m glad I went and recommend that you do to as it is one of the best things to do in Rhodes.

I suggest starting your visit in Lindos by heading up to the Acropolis. There are a number of stairs to climb to get there and you will purchase your ticket at the top. Wear shoes with good grips as the rocks and steps can be very slippery and bring drinking water.

After the acropolis, head down to explore the winding alleyways of Lindos town. Get off the main areas with all the shops and restaurants, these are the busiest. You will find some great photo spots in the smaller, quieter, alleyways behind.

It’s also worth bringing a swimsuit and hitting the beach before you go. Lindos beach is a sand beach and a great place to swim. There is also Pallas Beach right beside it, which was a bit busier with boats. You can also make your way to St. Paul’s Bay on the other side which is a bit further away but still walkable from Lindos Town.

Now, as I mentioned Lindos is a very popular day trip destination which means it’s quietest in the morning and evening. If you are renting a car, consider coming in the afternoon to escape the crowds. However, if you don’t rent a car I still think it’s worth visiting for a few hours. You can come by public bus (about 2 hours from Rhodes Town) or, you can book a shuttle-type transfer by bus or by boat.

Book a shuttle bus Lindos here.

Book a fast boat ride to Lindos here.

Book a boat ride to Lindos with swim stops here

Day 5: Beach Day at a Beach Club

woven umbrellas and beach chairs at Ronda Beach Club

For your last day in Rhodes I suggest a beach day. The island has plenty to choose from but if you are staying in Old Town as I suggested, then Elli Beach is the place to go. It is a public beach so you can just bring your own towel or chair if you have one and grab a spot but I would suggest going to one of the beach clubs that line the shore and spending your day there.

I went to Ronda Beach Club which I do recommend. It has a very cool, laid-back vibe. The interior area is decorated with lanterns and lots of greenery (great for Instagram pics!). The beach chairs have thick cushions and umbrellas with views over the blue and turquoise waters of Rhodes. Renting a lounge chair  includes a towel and bottle of water. They also have a drinks and food menu with breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner dishes. Wait staff will serve you at your lounge chair. I suggest arriving before lunchtime to ensure you get a chair.

Where to Eat and Drink in Rhodes Town

a plate of chicken gyros with fries, tomatoes, and onion

Greek food is amazing and there is certainly no shortage of places to eat around Rhodes Town. My biggest suggest would be to stay away from the tavernas on the main stretch in Old Town. It’s not that they are bad, they just aren’t as good as others and are overpriced. Again, go down some of the smaller alleys away from the crowded areas and you will find smaller, quieter, places to eat with delicious food and better prices. Or, you can head to new town, there are plenty of spots that locals eat there.

For breakfast, or if you are craving something sweet go to Fournariko bakery. I went here pretty much daily and everything I ate was delicious. The spinach and feta pies are a classic, of course. They also recommended the bougatsa which is a vanilla cream pie dusted with icing sugar, also very delicious.

For dinner, my favourites are:

  • Tamam (New Town) for Mediterranean dishes and a large wine selection
  • Nireas for Seafood (the shrimp saganaki is amazing)
  • Hermes Greek Grill House- delicious gyros and meat dishes

These recommendations came from locals who also suggested Pizanias (another seafood spot) and Koukos. I didn’t get to either of those but thought I should share because the other spots were so good.

Rhodes is an amazing island and quickly became one of my favoruites in Greece. The people are lovely, the scenery is beautiful, and there are plenty of things to do in Rhodes. As mentioned above I suggest you spend at least 5 days in Rhodes, more if you want to relax. And don’t forget to leave a couple of days to take the ferry over and explore Symi! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

A self-guided walking tour of Rhodes Old Town, Greece

With its medieval palaces and gates, cobbled streets and thick stone ramparts, visiting Rhodes Old Town in Greece is like taking a trip back through time. This UNESCO World Heritage site owes much of its character to the Knights of St John. Also known as the Knights Hospitaller, this Catholic military order occupied Rhodes from 1309–1523.

During that time they transformed the city into a walled stronghold, and it’s kept a lots of its original medieval character. Today Rhodes Town is a popular day trip destination, whether as a cruise stop or if you’re staying in one of Rhodes’ beach resorts.

Much of the Old Town is pedestrianised (apart from a few scooters) which makes it perfect to explore on foot. So join us on a walking tour of Rhodes Old Town, taking you through its historic highlights including museums, mosques, viewpoints and windmills.

Self-guided walking tour of Rhodes Old Town

The Liberty Gate – starting point for the self-guided walking tour of Rhodes Old Town

Start your Rhodes Town walking tour at the Liberty (Eleftherias) Gate, one of 11 gates which surround the fortified Old Town. If you’re coming from the cruise ship terminal, it’s around a 12-minute walk following the road west along the edge of the harbour .

Pass through the gate and walk along Apellou past the Municipal Art Gallery. Opposite, behind the taxi stop, you can see the ruins of the Temple of Aphrodite. This was built in the third century BC and dedicated to the Greek goddess of love and beauty.

Argyrokastro Square

Just past the temple is Argyrokastro Square, a pretty cobbled square with a stone fountain made from an old baptismal font in the centre. Overlooking the square is the former Arsenal of the Knights of St John – now home to the Decorative Arts Collection of Rhodes.

Inside the museum there’s a mixture of different forms of folk art from the 16th–20th centuries, including embroidery, woodcarvings, furniture and ceramics. If you want to take a look around, you can get a combined ticket for €10 which also covers the Palace of the Grand Master and Archaeological Museum, both of which we visit later in the walk.

The Decorative Arts Collection of Rhodes in Argyrokastro Square

Carry on along Apellou. On your right you’ll see the Street of the Knights, but walk past the turning to visit the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes first.

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

Rhodes’ Archaeological Museum is located inside the impressive 15th-century former Knights’ Hospital. It showcases 7000 years worth of treasures collected from across Rhodes and other Dodecanese islands. The main building is set around a courtyard with galleries on different levels displaying pottery amphora, vases and statues.

But that’s just the start – there are also gardens, courtyards and annexes to explore, with displays including coins, jewellery and tombstones. Some of the highlights are a first-century marble statue of Aphrodite bathing and the wall-mounted mosaics.

Entry to the museum costs €6, or you can get a combined ticket for €10 which also includes entry to the Palace of the Grand Master and the Decorative Arts Collection of Rhodes.

Exhibits inside the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

Once you’ve finished in the museum, retrace your steps back to the Street of the Knights (Odós Ippotón), turn left and walk up the street.

Street of the Knights

The Street of the Knights was where the Knights of St John once lived, and follows part of an old road between the port and Acropolis of Rhodes. The knights were organised into seven ‘tongues’, depending on where they came from – England, Germany, Italy, France, Provence, Auvergne and Aragon – and each guarded a different section of the city walls.

Each tongue had its own inn, and as you walk up the street you can still see the emblems and inscriptions carved onto the façades which were used to identify them. The most ornate and impressive is the Auberge de France. It’s now used as an office by the French consulate, but is sometimes open to the public for events or exhibitions.

When you reach the top of the street, the Palace of the Grand Master is on your right.

Palace of the Grand Master

With its tall stone towers, the Gothic Palace of the Grand Master dominates the skyline of Rhodes Old Town. It was built in the 14th century as an administrative centre and the residence of the Grand Master, who was in charge of the Knights of St John.

The palace was heavily damaged by an explosion in the 19th century and later restored by the Italians who occupied the island at the time. Only a fraction of its 158 rooms are open to the public, but the restored halls upstairs display furniture, tapestries, frescoes and mosaics. And there are two museums on the history of Rhodes downstairs.

Entry to the palace costs €6, or you can get a combined ticket for €10 which also includes entry to the Archaeological Museum and Decorative Arts Collection of Rhodes. You can also prebook skip-the-line tickets * (with or without audio guide) to avoid queuing.

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes

After visiting the palace, turn left at the end of the Street of the Knights and walk down Orpheus as far as the Roloi Clock Tower (there are some clean public toilets on your left just before you reach the tower entrance, which cost €0.50).

Roloi Clock Tower

Despite not looking very tall from outside, the Roloi Clock Tower is the highest point in the Old Town. The bottom of the tower dates from the 7th century but the top was rebuilt in the 1850s after being damaged. To get to the top you climb up a steep wooden staircase of 53 steps which takes you to a small, low-ceilinged room with windows on each side.

There are great views over the nearby Palace of the Grand Master, Mosque of Suleiman and the city walls, as well as out across the Old Town to the harbour. Entry to the tower costs €5, which also includes a drink in their terrace café afterwards.

The Roloi Clock Tower in Rhodes Old Town

Mosque of Suleiman

Next to the clock tower is the Mosque of Suleiman. The Ottomans captured Rhodes Town from the Knights of St John after the Siege of Rhodes in 1522. This was the first mosque they built, which is named after Sultan Suleiman I who led the invasion.

Over the years it’s been repaired and rebuilt after earthquakes and explosions. And although it’s not open to the public, you get a good view of the dome and minaret from the top of the clock tower. You can also take a look inside Hafiz Ahmed Agha Library opposite the mosque, which displays copies of Arabic manuscripts and maps.

Continue walking along Orpheus, which becomes Ippodamou. When you reach a junction at the end of the street, turn right towards Saint Athanasios Gate.

Gate of Saint Athanasios

The Gate of Saint Athanasios (Saint Anthony’s Gate) is another entrance to the Old Town built by the Knights. The victorious Ottoman troops marched through this gate after seizing the city. But they then closed it up to stop other invaders, and it was only reopened by the Italians in 1922 to mark the 400th anniversary of the Ottoman conquest.

If you walk through the gate you get a good view of the imposing walls and moat around the city – more than enough to put off most prospective invaders. The moat (which was never filled with water) is now a park with walking paths running through it.

Backtrack to the junction with Ippodamou, but this time go straight on until you reach the next junction. Then turn right and walk along Omirou, a scenic cobbled street with arches over it which is lined with shops, until you get to the Minos Roof Garden Café.

Minos Roof Garden Café

If you fancy stopping for a drink, the Minos Roof Garden Café has some of the best views around. This shaded roof terrace on top of the Minos guest house serves drinks and simple food. But its the views which are the main attraction – across the rooftops to the Palace of the Grand Master, over mosque domes, a nearby windmill and out to sea.

Views of the Palace of the Grand Master from the Minos Roof Garden Café terrace in Rhodes Town

Just past the café, turn left and walk along Sofokleos until you reach a junction, then turn right along Egeos, following this as it runs to the east. Partway along it dog-legs slightly to the right and turns into Minoos, which leads into the Square of the Jewish Martyrs.

Square of the Jewish Martyrs

The Square of the Jewish Martyrs (Plateia Evreon Martyron) is the heart of Rhodes Town’s Jewish Quarter. At the start of the 20th century, 5000 Jews lived in the city. But many left in the 1930s and 1673 were deported to Auschwitz during WWII. Only 151 survived the Holocaust and most later emigrated, leaving only a few Jews in Rhodes today.

There’s a black marble Holocaust Memorial in the centre of the square dedicated to Jews from Rhodes and Kos who lost their lives. You can also see the Sea Horse Fountain in the square, which is a replica of an original destroyed by bombing in WWII.

If you want to find out more about the history of the Jewish Quarter, walk across the square and turn right down Dosiadou to Rhodes Jewish Museum.

Rhodes Jewish Museum

The Rhodes Jewish Museum is located inside the former women’s prayer room at the Kahal Shalom Synagogue. The synagogue was built in 1577. It’s the oldest synagogue in Greece and the last of Rhodes Town’s original six synagogues that’s still in use.

The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of Rhodes’ Jewish population. There’s lots of information about their traditional way of life, religious rituals and the Ladino language they spoke, which derived from old Spanish, as well as a section on the Holocaust showing how the community was destroyed. Entry to the museum costs €6.

Rhodes Jewish Museum

From the museum, retrace your steps to the Square of the Jewish Martyrs, then cross the square to the opposite corner near the Sea Horse Fountain and walk down Aristotelous, following the street as far as Hippocrates Square .

Hippocrates Square

Bustling Hippocrates Square sits at the end of Socrates street, which runs uphill back towards the Mosque of Suleiman. The square is surrounded by cafés, bars, restaurants and shops and is a popular spot in the evenings (though it’s very touristy so if you’re looking for somewhere to eat or drink you’ll usually find better options a bit further away).

The fountain in the centre of the square and a stone staircase are all that’s left of the original Castellania, a former courthouse built by the Knights of St John in the 14th century. And if you climb up the stairs you get a great view out over the square.

Hippocrates Square in Rhodes Old Town

At the bottom of the Castellania stairs, turn right and then turn right again and walk through the Sea Gate (also known as the Marine Gate). This gate was built in 1478 and was the main entrance into Rhodes Old Town from the harbour.

After passing through the gate, cross the road and turn left, walking along the water’s edge. When the road curves to the left, go straight on through the archway, past St Paul’s Gate and on along the edge of Mandraki Harbour towards the three windmills.

Windmills of Mandraki

The three Windmills of Mandraki along the breakwater of Mandraki Harbour were built for the Knights of St John in the 14th century to grind grain after it was unloaded from ships in the harbour. It’s thought there were originally up to 18 mills but only three are left, which have been renovated and make a great spot for photos at sunrise or sunset.

Just beyond the windmills is St Nicholas Fortress, which was built to guard the harbour from invaders on the site of an old chapel dedicated to St Nicholas. It started off as just a tower with the bastion added later on and a lighthouse on top after that.

The three Windmills of Mandraki in Rhodes Town at sunset

Finally, end your self-guided walking tour of Rhodes Old Town by walking on to the end of the breakwater where you’ll see a doe statue on top of a pillar.

Two columns with bronze statues of deer on top sit on either side of the entrance to Mandraki Harbour – a doe on this side of the harbour and a stag opposite. They depict local Rhodian Deer ( Dama Dama ) which are the symbol of the island. They’re said to have been brought to the island by the Crusaders but have probably lived here much longer.

The statues mark the point where the legendary Colossus of Rhodes – a giant 33-metre-tall statue of the Greek sun god Helios – is thought to have stood. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World but was destroyed in an earthquake in 226 BC.

From the statue, you retrace your steps down to the end of the breakwater and you’ll be back at the Liberty Gate. If you want to finish off your walk with a drink, the Auvergne Cafe Bar Restaurant opposite Argyrokastro Square has a pretty, secluded garden. Or it’s around 20 minutes’ walk from the doe statue to the cruise ship terminal.
