** RALPH LAUREN ** really did spoil his guests at the Ambassador's reception in Moscow last week. The designer celebrated the 40th anniversary of Polo by opening not one, but two enormous flagship stores - one in the centre of town and one in a very wealthy suburb - before treating 200 guests to a decadent, Great Gatsby -style dinner at the American Ambassador's residence. As a string quartet played on the white marble steps, the king of all-American style stayed true to form with his attention to minute detail. Earlier that day he had overseen the replanting of flower beds with enormous tulips; lined up each of the 70 waiters for a neat haircut and personally styled ten international top models flown in for a special show which mixed the strongest pieces from his spring/summer and autumn/winter collections. A man who doesn't do things by halves, Ralph was joined by his wife Ricky, daughter Dylan, son David, Lady Ella Windsor, Vogue photographer Alexi Lubomirski and over 120 employees from his offices around the world - the most ever taken on one of the label's trips before. "My dad has always found this city inspiring and it was an obvious choice for one of our next openings," Dylan Lauren told us. "Although I don't officially work for the brand, he definitely listens to my opinion on styles when we're sitting at home around the table. I think he's been really inspired this trip by the architecture in Red Square, like St. Basil's Cathedral and the Kremlin - it's so colourful and interesting - maybe we'll see some pieces inspired by it in the next collection!" NEW YORK — Ralph is taking on Russia.

Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. said Friday that it plans to open two units in the Moscow area next spring.

Lauren will open a flagship at 1, Tretyakovsky Passage. The 8,000-square-foot unit will carry an assortment of the designer’s women’s and men’s brands. The company will open a second, 5,000-square-foot location at the Barvikha Luxury Village, a new shopping area in an upscale suburb of Moscow that’s comparable to the Americana mall in Manhasset, N.Y.

For the Moscow venture, Polo has partnered with Mercury Distribution S.A., the luxury goods trading company that operates fashion retail businesses.

Ralph Lauren, chairman and chief executive, and Roger Farah, president and chief operating officer, have made freestanding stores a priority for growth for the company, from stand-alone Double RL stores to Rugby to smaller, more intimate Ralph Lauren concept boutiques. The company has also been pursuing global opportunities, having opened a 16,000-square-foot emporium on Milan’s Via Montenapoleone in 2004, and an 18,000-square-foot retail temple on Tokyo’s Omotesando Boulevard last spring.

In fiscal 2006, Polo’s international business accounted for 30 percent, or $1.6 billion, of the company’s wholesale net sales of $5.3 billion.
