If you come to New Zealand on holiday, you'll need to get either a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) or a visitor visa — unless you're an Australian citizen.

US and Mexico citizens travelling on valid "regular" passports do not have to pay visa fees for visitor, work, or student visas.

All applicants are required to pay VAC fees of US$38 per application.

There are three available options for people enquiring about applying for a visa for New Zealand, or enquiring if a visa is needed:

• The Immigration New Zealand website (external link) . This website not only answers all questions relating to New Zealand visas, but is now also the portal through which an applicant can apply for their visa - through the Online system. By selecting the "Contact Us" option the enquirer can also access the Knowledge Base Q&A section of the website.
• Call the Immigration Contact Centre (ICC) in New Zealand at 011 64 9 914 4100. The ICC is operated 24 hours a day for 365 days of the year. It has staff fluent in various languages that are fully trained in all aspects of immigration policy and procedure.

New Zealand Visitor Visa (Tourist Visa): Eligibility, Requirements and Application Process

The New Zealand Visitor Visa is the general tourist visa available to non-visa-waiver nationalities.

Applications can be lodged either online or on paper. It’s cheaper and simpler to do it online as you won’t have to pay fees for a Visa Application Center and couriers. It’s also recommended by the New Zealand Immigration.

• Validity: Valid for 6 months if single entry, or 3-5 years if multiple entry
• Multiple entries: Not more than 6 months in any 12-month period
• Single entry: 9 months
• Visa fee: Up to 246 NZD (if applied online)
• Processing time: 80% of applications are processed within 4 weeks

Understanding new zealand visitor visa.

Visitor visa validity

In most cases, the New Zealand visitor visa is valid for 3 years with multiple entries.

For Chinese passports, the visa is valid for 5 years, whereas for US passports, the validity is 4 years.

Single-entry visitor visas have 6 months validity.

If your passport expires before that, you are allowed to transfer your visa to your new passport. 

Duration of stay

Multiple-entry visas let you visit New Zealand for up to 6 months at a time. You can spend a maximum of 6 months within any 12 months. 

For example, if you stay in New Zealand for 4 months from January 1 to May 1, then leave and come back on June 1, you will only be allowed to stay 2 more months, i.e. until August 1. Afterwards, you can return to New Zealand no earlier than January 1.

Single-entry visas allow you to stay a maximum of 9 months. This visa cannot allow you to stay in New Zealand for more than 9 months within the last 18 months, for example, if you had another visa before that.

Allowed number of entries

Most New Zealand Visitor visas allow multiple entries.

Single-entry visas are issued if you express your need to stay in New Zealand for longer than 6 months.

Allowed ports of entry

You can enter through any international airport or port.

If you arrive in New Zealand in a different location by private yacht or private aircraft, you must report to a customs port or airport without delay and complete an arrival card there. 

When to apply

• Earliest: 3 months before you travel
• Latest: 1 month before you travel

New Zealand Visitor Visa Requirements

Who requires a visitor visa.

The New Zealand Visitor Visa is required for all nationalities who want to travel to New Zealand for tourism, EXCEPT for:

• Australian passport holders
• Travelers from visa-waiver countries (they must obtain an NZeTA )
• Transit passengers through Auckland International Airport not leaving the transit area (must obtain NZeTA or Transit Visa depending on eligibility)

Documents required

Include as many documents to support your application as you can. You have to satisfy New Zealand Immigration that:

• You are who you say you are
• You won’t be a risk to public health
• You are of good character without a substantial criminal record and not a threat to the public
• You have enough money to support yourself
• You are a genuine tourist visitor who will not overstay or work illegally.

To do this, attach the following documents:

Identity Documents

• Valid Passport or certificate of identity (valid for at least 3 more months after the intended departure date from New Zealand)
• 1 acceptable photo (for online applications)
• Residence Permit or Visa (if you live in a country different from your citizenship)

Health Documents

• normally nothing required
• Chest X-ray but only if you come from or have spent at least 3 months in the past 5 years in a country that doesn’t have a low incidence of tuberculosis .
• Chest X-ray regardless of where you come from
• Medical Certificate

Character Documents

• Normally nothing required
• You must disclose any criminal record or character issues

Proof of Funds Documents

Include documents that show you have at least 1000 NZD per month, or 400 NZD per month if you’ve already paid for your accommodation. For example:

• Bank statements
• Credit card statements
• Traveler cheques
• Proof of booked and paid accommodation 

Genuine Visitor Documents (Bona-fides)

• Explanation of the reasons for your trip
• Hotel bookings
• Tickets for attractions or events
• Transportation tickets
• Passport pages with entry and exit stamps
• Copy of the letter from that country’s immigration authority declining your application (OR)
• A written explanation of why your application was not successful if the original letter is not available.
• Citizenship statuses
• Evidence of Employment, e.g. leave approval letter from employer with expected return date and pay slips
• Evidence of Study, e.g. university letter, student identity card
• Evidence of Relationships, e.g. family register, marriage certificate
• Evidence of Assets, e.g. deed of ownership for property, proof of business ownership
• Evidence you receive a pension, e.g. retirement certificate, pension slips

Photo requirements

For online applications , your photo must be:

• between 500 KB and 3 MB
• between 900 x 1,200 pixels and 2,250 x 3,000 pixels
• JPG or JPEG format.

For paper applications , your photo must be:

• 35 mm wide and 45 mm high

All photos must:

• Be in portrait, not landscape
• Have even lighting with minimal shadowing
• Be in color, showing natural skin tones
• Be in focus, not blurry
• Not contain red-eye
• Be an unedited original
• Not be a selfie
• Be taken 1.5 meters from the face
• Be taken against a plain, light-colored (but not white) background with no patterns or objects
• Only contain plain clothing patterns
• facing straight to the camera
• Keeping your eyes open and mouth closed
• Not smiling or frowning
• Having long hair tucked behind the ears
• Not wearing any sunglasses or hats (prescription glasses are allowed if there is no reflected light or glare)
• Religious head coverings are allowed as long as your face and hairline are visible

Visitor visa fee

The Visa fee for paper applications depends on your country and the Visa Application Center (VAC) you apply at. You will also have to pay a VAC processing fee and for courier service.

If you apply online, the visa fee for most nationalities is 246 NZD. This includes the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of 35 NZD.

Citizens of the following Pacific Island Nations pay 171 NZD.

• Federated States of Micronesia
• Marshall Islands
• Papua New Guinea
• Solomon Islands

Processing time

As of the time of writing, 80% of all applications are processed within 4 weeks.

New Zealand Visitor Visa Application Process

How to apply for visitor visa.

It’s both easier and cheaper to apply online. As such, the following procedure is for online applications.

Follow these steps:

• Go to the New Zealand Immigration website
• You will be redirected to RealMe to create an account
• Start a new application
• Fill in your personal information and attach a photo (the system will check the photo for eligibility)
• Answer questions about your reasons for visiting New Zealand, your character, health, employment history and relationships
• Attach as many documents as you deem necessary
• Pay the visa fee
• Submit the application

You can track your visa status in the dashboard of the application webpage.

Download approved visitor visa

If you made an online application, you must print your eVisa and carry it with you when you travel to New Zealand. You will get a visa label when you make a paper application, in which case you do not need to print anything.

When you arrive in New Zealand, you must complete a Traveler Declaration and seek entrance permission.

Approach an Immigration Officer

You must be able to produce evidence that you will meet the conditions of your visa. Officers usually ask to see:

Be extremely careful with the customs declaration you submit. Declare all items or goods listed on the form. Failure to do so, even if the items are benign, may lead to instant fines or even the cancellation of your visa.

New Zealand visa options

Visiting new zealand for a holiday.

You do not need a visa to visit New Zealand if you are:

• A New Zealand citizen travelling on a New Zealand passport or on a foreign passport that has a New Zealand citizen endorsement
• An Australian citizen travelling on an Australian passport
• A foreign passport holder with a valid visa for New Zealand - including a Permanent Resident visa

If you plan to visit New Zealand for a short period, you need request a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (opens in new window) (NZeTA) before you travel if you are:

• A citizen of a country which has a visa waiver (opens in new window) agreement with New Zealand (you can stay up to three months)

If you don’t meet the above, then you’ll need a visitor visa. The fastest and easiest way to apply for a visitor visa (opens in new window) is online.

Before travelling to New Zealand, you need to make sure your passport is valid for at least three months longer than your expected departure date.

Be sure to request your   NZeTA , or apply for your visitor visa well in advance of travel to avoid delays, and only use the official NZeTA website to request your New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority.

Essential travel information

Working holidays.

Working holiday visas (opens in new window) are available to young people, usually aged 18-30 (but 18-35 for a select few nationalities). They let you travel and work in New Zealand for up to 12 months, or 23 months if you’re from the UK. To apply you’ll need to meet the visa requirements, and have:

• A return ticket, or enough money to pay for one; and 
• Be coming mainly to holiday, with work being a secondary intention.

Arriving in Aotearoa New Zealand

Everyone entering New Zealand needs to complete a  New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) (opens in new window)  including babies and children.

It’s free and you can complete it on the NZTD website or by downloading the NZTD app ahead of your travel.

You can start your NZTD at a time that suits you. If arriving by plane, the earliest you can submit your declaration is 24 hours before you start your trip to New Zealand. An NZTD needs to be submitted by the time you reach New Zealand passport control.

If arriving by boat (including cruise ships), the earliest you can submit your NZTD is 24 hours before departing the vessel’s last foreign port prior to arriving in New Zealand.

It needs to be submitted by the time the vessel has berthed at its first port in New Zealand. ​

If you apply for a visa or NZeTA, you still need to complete an NZTD (opens in new window) .

Here's how to complete your declaration online. 

The form is available in English and Te Reo Māori, as well as simplified and traditional Chinese Mandarin. 

From April 2024, the form will be in 12 more languages: Hindi, Samoan, Fijian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Tagalog, Tamil, Tongan, and Portuguese.

Paper NZTD forms will be available for travellers who cannot complete it online.

What you can bring into New Zealand

After you’ve cleared passport control, you should collect your baggage and proceed through customs and biosecurity checks. In order to protect New Zealand and its environment, certain items are not allowed to be brought into the country, have restrictions for entry or must be declared if they are deemed to present a biosecurity risk. These include food, plants, animal products and outdoor recreational equipment.

Your baggage may be sniffed by a detector dog and/or x-rayed, and it may be searched to identify any risk goods you might be carrying.

Allowances and duty free concessions

As a visitor to New Zealand you may be entitled to various concessions and duty free entries on some of your goods. It’s no secret that the New Zealand borders are pretty strict. Nevertheless, the vast majority of visitors to New Zealand. i.e. people visiting to travel and explore, do not need to apply for a Visitor Visa (Tourist Visa) before arriving in the country. They do, however, need to pay for the NZeTA . Alternatively, there are certain nationalities that will need to apply for a Visitor Visa before arrival. Sounds complicated? We aim to break it down and make the visa process easier to understand in this guide to visas for visiting New Zealand.

What is a Visitor Visa For and How Long Can You Stay in New Zealand on a Tourist Visa?

“Visiting” New Zealand refers to someone temporarily staying in New Zealand without working in the country. The maximum time you can stay in New Zealand as a visitor depends on what country you are from. Read our quick guide below to find out what you need to visit New Zealand.

You Do Not Need to Get a Tourist Visa if…

If any of the following circumstances apply to you, you do not need to apply for a visitor visa (tourist visa) to New Zealand. Some of them are pretty darn obvious, but we will list them to cover all the bases.

• You are a New Zealand or Australian citizen
• You have a New Zealand resident visa
• You have a New Zealand permanent resident visa
• You have an Australian permanent residence visa
• You have an Australian resident return visa (excludes Australian temporary or provisional residence visa)
• You are from a visa-waiver country (see below).

There are also exceptions for people, for example, who are air flight crew, military, cruise ship passengers, etc. You can find more information about that on the Immigration New Zealand website .

Visa-Waiver Countries: Which Countries Do Not Need a Visa for New Zealand?

Some countries have an agreement with New Zealand and their citizens are allowed to come to New Zealand for three months to travel without having to go through the process of getting a visa . As you can see, there are heaps of countries on the visa-waiver list. We have listed them by continent to make finding your country easier.

New Zealand Visitor Visa Requirements: Conditions for People from a Visa-Waiver Country

From a visa-waiver country? That’s great! This means you don’t have to apply for a visa before you come to New Zealand. However, there are a few things you should be aware of before arriving in the country.

You must make sure you:

• have paid the NZeTA and IVL (see section below)
• complete the “ Traveller Declaration ” during the flight to New Zealand or online 24 hours before travel
• have a passport that is valid three months beyond the date you intend to leave New Zealand
• have evidence for sufficient funds and onward travel (see the section below)
• stay in New Zealand for nine months or less in an 18-month period
• have no intention of studying or working in New Zealand (for that, you would need a working holiday visa or student visa , for example).

Please note that, as a citizen of a visa-waiver country, your visitor visa will be granted at the airport on arrival in New Zealand. It will usually be electronic, meaning that you may not get a visa stamp or label on your passport.

The NZeTA and IVL

Travellers from visa-waiver countries might not have to physically apply for a visitor visa for New Zealand but they do have to request and pay the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) and IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) before arrival.

How Long Does it Take to Get an NZeTA?

It is best to request them as soon as possible, as it can take up to 72 hours for an NZeTA approval.

How to Get an NZeTA

There are two ways of paying for the NZeTA and IVL:

• Through the Immigration New Zealand Android or Apple App
• Through the Immigration  New Zealand website form .

How Long is the NZeTA Valid?

The NZeTA and IVL are valid for multiple visits and transits to New Zealand for up to two years.

Evidence of Sufficient Funds and Onward Travel for Visitors and Tourists

Whether you have a New Zealand tourist visa (visitor visa) or an NZeTA, you will need to prepare some documents to present to the immigration officer on arrival in New Zealand. Visitor Visa Application (1017) for Non-Online Applications

If you cannot apply online or prefer a paper application, you can use the Visitor Visa Application form (1017) for non-online applications. This traditional method requires you to fill out the necessary forms and provide physical copies of your supporting documents.

European Union adopts more favourable Schengen visa rules for Indians

Indian Nationals can now apply for a multiple entry Schengen visa with longer validity

On 18 April 2024, the European Commission adopted specific rules on the issuing of multiple entry visas to Indian nationals, which are more favourable than the standard rules of the Visa Code that applied to date. This new visa ‘cascade’ regime for Indian nationals residing in India who apply for Schengen (short-stay) visas in India will provide easier access to visas with multi-year validity for travellers with an established travel history, if the passport validity allows. 

According to the newly adopted visa “cascade” regime for India, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years. The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals.

This decision comes in the context of strengthened relations under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which seeks comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the EU and India, with facilitation of people-to-people contacts being of key aspect due to the importance of India as a partner for the EU. 

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work. The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries (of which 25 are EU states): Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Want to work remotely in Italy? The country just launched its new digital nomad visa.

Remote workers with dreams of working from the rolling hills of Tuscany or the cliffs of Positano are now one step closer to making that reality. Italy launched a new digital nomad visa.

Two years after its announcement, the highly anticipated digital nomad visa officially became available for those eligible on April 4.  

“Italian-style, everything happens slowly,” said Nick Metta, a lawyer for the law firm Studio Legale Metta , which has helped Americans relocate to Italy for decades. “Now there is a pipeline of people waiting just to file the application. It's been a long-awaited visa.” 

Most of Metta’s clients would previously apply for a student visa, which allowed them to work part time in Italy. 

Under the new visa, people will be able to work from Italy for one year, with the option to renew once their visa is due for expiration. Without a visa, U.S. travelers could only stay in Italy for up to 90 days without the ability to work.

The launch makes Italy the latest European country to offer a digital nomad visa , which has already been available in Greece and Hungary.

Who can apply for a digital nomad visa in Italy?

According to the official decree , the visa is meant for those who “carry out a highly qualified work activity through the use of technological tools that allow you to work remotely.” 

The regulations define eligible applicants as “digital nomads,” self-employed freelancers, “remote workers,” or those employed by a company outside of Italy and can work from anywhere, according to Studio Legale Metta.

To qualify for the visa, the applicant has to meet certain requirements:

◾ A university or college degree or an accredited professional license.

◾ Six months of work experience in the industry, or five years for applicants without a university degree.

◾ An existing employment contract.

◾ A criminal record check.

◾ Proof of an annual income of 28,000 euros (about $29,880.06).

◾ Evidence of housing in Italy.

◾ Evidence of health insurance coverage.

Applicants can also apply to have family members join them on their Italian move, but the government has to give the final approval. 

How do I apply for the digital nomad visa in Italy?

Thankfully, Metta said the paperwork for the digital nomad visa isn’t “too complicated.” 

The first stop for interested applicants will be the Italian Consulate for their area. “Consulates are basically the front of the government to receive the applications,” Metta said. Interested applicants can book an appointment with the consulate and start gathering their necessary documents. People can also apply by mailing in their application. (However, Metta did mention consulate websites are often confusing and outdated, so working with a relocation service can make things easier.)

To apply, applicants will also need a passport with an expiration date at least three months after the end of the visa period and two passport-sized photos.

Relocation services can also help people navigate the sometimes complicated process of applying for a visa, such as negotiating early termination penalties with landlords in Italy. 

These services also help people with state and tax planning, especially if people own assets in the U.S., like a house. Once in Italy, people need to register their residency with the town hall, which will determine what sort of taxes they’ll pay. People can speak to an international tax specialist to figure out their future taxes as well. 

How much will the visa cost?

According to Studio Legale Metta, the application fee is 116 euros (about $123.78) per person.

How long will the application process take?

Not too long, actually. Metta estimates the process could take just three weeks if applicants are “well-organized and have all your tax documents filed.”

Woman sentenced in false refugee claims case.

A migrant has been sentenced in the Auckland District Court to 11 months home detention for her role in an immigration fraud scheme where she filed false refugee claims on behalf of other migrants already in New Zealand.

Nurul Syahirah Binti Noor Azman was found guilty in November 2022 on 5 charges of supplying false or misleading information under section 342(1)(b) of the Immigration Act 2009. On 23 February 2024 Azman was sentenced to 11 months home detention.

Azman’s offending occurred in 2020 and saw her involved in the submission of false refugee claims with Immigration New Zealand (INZ). Azman’s offending was detected following an INZ operation in the Bay of Plenty looking into allegations of migrant worker exploitation in the horticulture industry.

Immigration investigators discovered migrant workers were being encouraged to falsely claim refugee status to obtain work visas. Azman charged workers up to $600 each to facilitate these fake applications.

Statements obtained from workers interviewed revealed an individual was responsible for creating a ‘story’ which would then be used to make the refugee claim and be submitted to INZ.

National Manager Immigration Investigations Jason Perry says the sentence holds Azman accountable in what was a planned attempt to manipulate the immigration system while concurrently making additional income for herself.

“This sentence sends a message to people that this sort of cynical and devious behaviour will not be tolerated and will be uncovered by INZ. When cases such as this one appear we will take all steps available to us to criminally prosecute the individual."

“Filing, and supporting the filing of, fraudulent refugee claims is an egregious abuse of the immigration system and it diverts time and effort away from processing valid refugee claims,” Perry says.

INZ encourages anyone who knows of immigration offending to report it immediately. Cases can be reported to MBIE’s contact centre on 0800 20 90 20. Alternatively, they can be reported to New Zealand Police or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Enforcement options for Immigration New Zealand include informing and education, warnings, infringement notices and prosecution. A prosecution will be considered where there is sufficient evidence and it is considered to be in the public interest to prosecute.
