My husband's favourite bit was Mayfield Gardens, and I would also place it at the top, however, the Dubbo Zoo overnight was hard to beat. We actually had around 24 hrs at the Zoo and every minute was great, despite the 42o heat on day 2. Cowra Peace Gardens also could not be faulted, nor the dinner and breakfast at Montrose House, Canowindra. As for Yeoval - what a find, the Banjo Paterson Museum and Alf and Sharon's coffee & scones! It was 5 days packed with interest, good company, and great information from Janine and Jeff. Oh, by the way, food was also really good, and we heaved a sigh of relief when we undertook our First Peoples cultural tour with Gerard - Janine thought he was providing lunch, but he had prepared afternoon tea. We all cheered - as Sharon's scones had more than covered morning tea AND lunch! Gerard was another wonderful find. Our leaders had really done their homework! Read more Written December 11, 2020

Suggested Itineraries

Travel across the Snowy Mountains and experience the region's stunning landscapes, historic towns and renowned food and wine.

The Snowy Mountains is a big place to visit. Hit the road on a touring route, make your own way around, or follow an itinerary to see the wonders of the Snowy Mountains for yourself.

The Snowy Mountains region is well served by a network of quality sealed roads, perfect for driving, riding and cycling, boasting spectacular scenery. The Snowy Mountains Drive can be accessed from Canberra in the north, Bega on the south coast and Albury to the southwest. Take your time enjoying one of Australia’s greatest natural resources at your own pace.

The Snowy Mountains contains the nation’s highest peak, Mt Kosciuszko, the inspiring civil engineering feat of the Snowy Hydro Electric Scheme, and the state’s largest preserved natural area in Kosciuszko National Park . This physical face is given its cultural heart by the heritage preserved in the park, in the people’s literature, storytelling and folklore.

Day One – Cooma, Berridale and Dalgety

Visit the new Snowy Hydro Visitor and Education Centre and unravel the design and technology of the Snowy Scheme. Walk along Cooma’s Lambie Street to the Raglan Regional Art Gallery, past historic architecture of stone and timber. Visit Cooma’s railhead, a functioning attraction with trains running to a regular timetable.

Take Tourist Drive 1 south of Cooma. Drive to the top of Mt Gladstone (three kilometres south of Cooma). Heidi’s Tea House at the top, provides great gluhwein and 360° views over Cooma, the Monaro, the Snowy Mountains and Mt Kosciusko.

"Good food, a great country pub, an historic bridge and amazing walk, is there to enjoy."

Beyond the Snowy Mountains airport lies Berridale, a cross-roads village that features a local winery and cafés. From here, drive to historic Dalgety, the town on the Snowy River that almost became the nation’s capital. Good food, an historic bridge, a great country pub and an amazing walk is there to enjoy. A 20 minute drive from Dalgety, brings you to Lake Jindabyne. Visit the Snowy Region Visitor Centre for information, park passes and maps, and to view an interpretive display of the towns history.

Day Two – Jindabyne, Kosciuszko National Park and Perisher Valley/Charlotte Pass

Cycle along the lake’s edge or hire a runabout or catamaran for time on the water. Take a scenic or fishing boat charter, or  take to the air in a scenic flight. Visit the monument to Count Paul Edmund Strzelecki and learn why he was significant to the region. Check out at the Jindabyne Dam wall and take a mountain bike ride from there to Tyrollean Village. Go fishing in the lake or in one of the many surrounding streams, and catch Rainbow or Brown Trout and the occasional Brookie or Atlantic salmon. Fishing licences are required in NSW, and short stay licences are available from a number of outlets including many service stations.

Leave Jindabyne via the Kosciusko Road and venture into the Kosciusko National Park. Passes are sold at the gate or at the regional Visitors Centres. Stop at the Waste Point lookout for great views of the lake and Jindabyne. A little further on, the Kosciuszko Education Centre (open seasonally) gives some understanding of the features, flora and fauna of the mountains, including the illusive pygmy possum and corroboree frog. There are lovely mountain forest walks commencing from here.

Enter the alpine region, where the trees thin and become restricted to the warmer locations along ridgelines towards Perisher Valley. This ski village is a quiet haven for walkers in summer. A half-day trip walk to the Porcupine Rocks is a must.

Drive on to Charlotte Pass, Australia’s highest ski village (along the way stop at Alpine Eyre kiosk for a snack or lunch). Witness magnificent views of Australia’s alpine zone. On the horizon, across what is called the “Main Range”, is Mt Kosciusko. A return walk to the top of Kosciusko is a full day’s trek. Below, witness the first flows of the iconic Snowy River.

Day Three – The Kosciuszko Alpine Way and Thredbo Valley

Just three kilometres from Jindabyne, are two valley crossings; the first through folkloric grazing land, and the second through the longest geological fault in NSW. Crackenback Farm gives an idea of the local building styles from two centuries ago and offers a café, guesthouse and maze. Visit Wildbrumby Schnapps Distillery & Cafe .

Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa is a magnificent property featuring award winning apartments overlooking Lake Crackenback. The resort offers great dining options in both Lake Crackenback Restaurant and the Alpine Larder Café, as well as a number of fun activities (swimming, Segway tours, mountain biking, golf, tennis to name a few) and is only a short walk to the Skittle.

The Skitube is Australia’s only alpine underground rack and rail railway. Parking the car at Skitube gives access to river walks, and the first purpose built fishing lodge at Bullocks Hut. There is some good fly fishing here as well in the nearby Thredbo River.

Drive into Thredbo and view modern mountain architecture in a genuine alpine village. A variety of accommodation and dining is available. Take part in a mountain walk, via the Kosciusko Express Chairlift to the top (for many an exciting trip in itself). Popular walks include the Mt Kosciusko summit walk and the Dead Horse Gap walk. When in the village, try tennis, golf or bobsledding. Or if incredible mountain biking takes your fancy, it is available for all ages and abilities.

Day Four – Kosciuszko Alpine Way and Khancoban

This stretch of Tourist Drive 1 takes you across the natural watershed of the Australian Alps. Below Deadhorse Gap the rivers flow east into the Snowy. Wild brumbies gather here to exploit the sub-alpine pasture. They are best seen in mornings and late afternoons, and there are more good walking trails here to explore.

Continue along the Alpine Way past Tom Groggin Station, once claimed to be home of the “Man from Snowy River”, to Geehi. Grey kangaroos, wombats and emus live here and can be seen at almost any time of the day. Geehi, on the Swampy Plains river, is a beautiful spot for lunch or camping and has good facilities. Scammers Spur lookout (a stop further along) is a must. Observe Mt Kosciusko as it rises 1900m from the valley floor. Constructed for a visit by Queen Elizabeth in 1950s, it gives the best view of the western faces of the Australian Alps.

Plan a stop at the Murray 1 Power Station and Information Centre, which features an excellent display on the Snowy Scheme’s history and the people who built it. The Tourist Drive 1 concludes in Khancoban where good food and accommodation is on offer. In the pondage below Murray 2 Power Station, trout fishing is popular or take up a relaxed game of golf with the kangaroos at the Khancoban Country Club.

Days Five to Seven  –  Tumbarumba, Batlow, Tumult,  Adaminaby,  Nimmitabel and Bombala

Follow the signposted Tourist Drive 5, which briefly crosses the Murray River and into Victoria passing through Towong, Tintaldra and back into New South Wales.

Tumbarumba is the next stop. Visit the spectacular Paddy’s River Falls, and the location of the mid section of the Hume and Hovell Walking Track. Taste Tumbarumba’s increasingly popular cold climate wines. Experience one of many adventure activities, such as mountain biking, or visit a berry farm. The main street displays fine examples of country Australian architecture. Accommodation available includes motel, hotel and B&B. For a great Australiana experience visit the Boggy Creek Shows , it's a must!

Tourist Drive 5 continues to Batlow, the home of cool climate apples and stone fruits. This beautiful town is a great stopover, before travelling on to Tumut, which sits at the crossroads of Tourist Drive 5 and the Snowy Mountains Highway.

Once in Tumut, visit the Old Butter Factory, now the Tumut Region Visitors Centre. You can take the River Walk, visit the historic millet Broom Factory, Tumut Valley Violets, catch a guided tour of the state-of- the art paper mill, and visit the Adelong falls and gold mine ruins.

Turn south onto the Snowy Mountains Highway. Make a stop at Blowering Reservoir Dam wall, or just a short drive further at Tumult 3, visit the largest power station in the Snowy Hydro Scheme.

On this diversion, you will pass the birthplace of author Miles Franklin in picturesque Talbingo.

Visit Yarrangobilly Caves and Thermal Pool, or the more adventurous can turn at Rules Point, to visit the preserved and maintained family homestead at Currango (featured in many high country photo shoots).

Visit Kiandra, a historic gold mining town, and the birthplace of skiing in Australia, and the second oldest ski club in the world. Observe the interesting original buildings and cemetery.

Take the turn to Cabramurra, the highest town in Australia. Many of this area’s waterways and dams, such as Eucumbene River and Three Mile Dam make great fishing locations, especially for brown trout.

Adaminaby’s “Big Trout” welcomes the visitor to this popular centre for trout fishing, although horse riding in summer and skiing in winter (at nearby Selwyn Snowfields) are big draw-cards as well.

Drive to Lake Eucumbene where a variety of fishing lodges and caravan parks at Old Adaminaby and Anglers Reach are to be found. The Lake’s Dam Wall is testament to the awe- inspiring vision of the architects of the Snowy Hydro Scheme.

From Cooma a trip through Nimmitabel across the Monaro Plain provides a good introduction to these prairie-like grasslands. On the road to Bombala, these grasslands and cold winters create the conditions for some of the finest woollen fleeces in the world.

"Bombala is fast becoming known for its production of lavender oils as the soils, climate and altitude match the lavender plants’ needs perfectly."

Bombala is fast becoming known for its production of lavender oils as the soils, climate and altitude match the lavender plants’ needs perfectly. Visit the Bombala Lavender House for visitor information. Drive through town to the platypus reserve on the Bombala River, and catch a glimpse of these timid but interesting creatures from the specially constructed viewing platform.

Bombala is a great base for mountain biking, bushwalking and 4WD adventures. Twenty minutes south of Bombala, Bondi State Forest has over 85km of trails winding through pine and stately native forests. Visit the South East Forest National Park to witness lush old-growth forests, spectacular granite formations and the Myanba Gorge. Take a drive to Delegate and visit the Early Settlers Hut, believed to be the first European dwelling on the Monaro.

The perfect Snowy Mountains road trip itinerary

30 October 2023

Time

You don’t need sugar on top to enjoy the sweet surrounds. The hidden villages and fantastic local produce make for the perfect Snowy Valleys Way road trip, writes Patrick Higgins. Photography by Elise Hassey

For a few months each year the Snowy Valley’s region of Australia, home to our most popular ski resorts and highest peaks, has to punch an extra notch in its belt to accommodate the bulge in population.

But as the dusting of white melts from peaks and the crowds swap snow boots for boardshorts and bikinis, what’s left could tempt even the most bronzed beach bum away from golden sands.

Rolling mountains of green, itching to be hiked and biked, are laced with streams and rivers filled to breaking point with meltwater and fish to lure keen anglers.

With an abundance of fresh produce ready for rumbling bellies, it’s time to buckle up for a journey to the Snowy Mountains… without the snow. Or the crowds.

Day 1 – an afternoon in the orchards

From any city in Australia you can fly direct to the Snowy Mountains Airport, but for the full road-trip experience fly into Wagga Wagga (so nice they named it twice) and make your way down and around via two or four wheels to Gundagai, Batlow and Tumut.

With the mercury rising, melted snow has stuffed nature with goodness and the results are obvious as you head south to Batlow, taking in orchards of apple trees, stone fruits, berries and cherries. Via Batlow Road you’ll stumble across cute farmgate stores such as Mouat’s Farm and Wilgro Orchards with plump produce picked for your pleasure on display along with jams and preserves.

Apple picking kicks off in late February, and from December until early January you can pick your own cherries and berries, though the majority will find their way to mouths rather than back to the car. Batlow is also home to the famous Batlow Cider and Big Apple (no Aussie road trip is complete without a sighting of one of our many ‘big things’ ).

Stained fingers will steer you further down the road to Laurel Hill and the strikingly beautiful Sugar Pine Walk, which has become a very popular destination for couples to exchange rings.

Feel completely enchanted as you walk the 400-metre stretch across a bed of fallen pine needles through the natural cathedral of Native American Sugar Pine.

Planted in 1928, the grand pines have since grown in height and popularity, making this little turn-off before heading into Tumbarumba a must-see.

Fantastical landscape Tumut

Fantastical landscape just outside of Tumut. (Photo: Elise Hassey)

If you’re after a different perspective and a chance to break up the drive, book a scenic flight with a True North Heli Tours. Meet at Tumut Heliport for a Country Escape tour that includes a scenic flight through the the Snowy Valley and into Tumbarumba wineries for a wine tasting and three course lunch. The tour will end where it began, so you can jump back in the car and continue on the road.

If you’d rather skip the helicopter flight and continue on the road, stop in at Tumut River Brewing Co for a brewery tour and a bite to eat.

Day 2 – A flick and a pizza in Tumbarumba

You’ll need to fuel up for another day of wandering and, while in Tumbarumba, the pick of the litter is Nest Cafe and Cinema on Winton Street. This gem is straight out of a fairytale with book-lined shelves to ponder as you overindulge in blueberry pancakes with ice-cream and a side of coffee.

Owner Laura Fraumeni has also converted the back room into a cinema with Friday and Saturday evening flicks accompanied by a tempting pizza selection, the Original White is a favourite with crisp rosemary potatoes, prosciutto, parmesan and pesto.

From here roll the rubber round the bend for a short 10-minute drive to Courabyra Wines on Courabyra Road where brother-and-sister duo Cathy Gairn and Stephen Morrison have been blending together some mighty fine vino that even Sydney’s acclaimed restaurant Tetsuya’s has taken a liking to.

They offer private tours of the sub-alpine vineyard for scenery soaking and an insight into the region’s history finished off with a glass of bubbles on the balcony.

One winery just not enough? Johansen Wines should also be on your pit stop list.

It’s hard to leave such dolce vita, but the next leg of the trip is worth it – the landscapes that continuously unfold before you as you traverse along Tooma Road and then onto the Alpine Way towards Jindabyne are nothing short of spectacular.

The area is perhaps even more stunning without the snow-covered peaks, as buxom hills of varying shades of green force drivers to the roadside, smartphones in hand. Google maps estimates a three-hour drive, but allow for extra photo-taking time.

idyllic lake setting of Moonbah Huts

The idyllic setting of Moonbah Huts. (Photo: Elise Hassey)

Day 3 – your very own alpine hut

Moonbah Huts owner Brett Smith has taken the term ‘handmade’ to another level with his stunning cottages nestled neatly on the outskirts of Jindabyne.

The two stone huts, located on the banks of the Moonbah River, were built by Brett over a 10-year period from rocks pulled from the mountains that dwarf these idyllic dwellings.

Both huts sleep four and have an open fireplace perfect for post Mt Kosciuszko-climb tea-sipping, or the balcony rocking chair might take your fancy. Brett also caters for the keen angler with fly-fishing lessons in prime rainbow trout territory.

With the Kosciuszko National Park ready for wandering, head out of Jindabyne and follow the signs to Thredbo where the main chair lift stays open during the warmer months to take explorers and keen mountain bikers up to Australia’s highest peak at 2228 metres above sea level. Fingers crossed the weather is kind as cloud cover can sometimes spoil the breathtaking view out over the national park.

Heading back, make sure you pull into the Wild Brumby distillery just off Alpine Way to sample some of Brad and Monika Spalding’s schnapps range that will help wash down the veal schnitzel or bratwurst you’ve just inhaled.

They also do daily tastings and bottles are on hand for you to fill the car boot before you leave.

Day 4 – breakfasting in Jindabyne

Today you only need three words: Parc baked beans. This dish will have you nose deep in porcelain and asking for seconds as the crispy chorizo and poached eggs fuel a weary traveller’s appetite.

Parc cafe in the heart of Jindabyne is a must-stop for breaky before any activity, as the coffee holds a candle to Sydney and Melbourne cafes while dishes will leave you with a satisfied grin. For the sweet tooth, the waffles are worth a dig.

To keep your sugar-high going head out to Leesville Estate and the Snowy Mountain Cookies factory to be greeted by the infectious smile of owner Nolen Oayda and the aroma of fresh-baked cookies. The factory is a window into the growing company’s production and fills local kids with anticipation come school holidays.

A trip into Jindabyne wouldn’t be complete without a quick stop into the Banjo Paterson Inn for a schooner (or two, if you’re not driving) of Kosciuszko Pale Ale. ‘Koszy’ as it’s affectionately known around these parts, is micro-brewed on site by Chuck Hahn, of the famous Hahn brewing name, and close friend and business partner Richard Burton.

The taps at the inn are fed directly from the stills below – on display through glass windows – with frothy pours ready for patrons to rehydrate.

Day 5 – caverns and wild horses

The Snowy Mountains Highway will lead you north out of town and towards the Yarrangobilly Caves. Much like the trek into Jindabyne, the scenery that accompanies you on your journey north is worth taking a little extra time to savour.

The five hauntingly beautiful caves that make up the Yarrangobilly network are getting a little long in the tooth – 440-million years long. The limestone caverns are decorated with stalagmites and stalactites and can be explored on a daily tour.

You should also take yourself on a self-guided tour of the river walk to experience the thermal pool, which is naturally warmed to a balmy 27°C from an underground hot spring. Stroll along the tranquil riverbank before taking in the gaping South Glory cave – the largest of the five.

As you drive out of Yarrangobilly Caves Road and back onto Snowy Mountains Highway, make a detour onto Long Plain Road a few hundred metres north on your right-hand side – this dusty track leads into wild Brumby territory, so drive with caution and keep an eye out for piles of manure as you creep along hoping to glimpse the majestic creatures.

The Swiss-like countryside greets you as you make your way towards Tumut, taking in the grand rivers and sweeping bends. Fond memories linger of the past few days, and you’ll realise that the Snowy Mountains, without snow, are truly captivating.

The details: Snowy Mountains

Get there:  Rex and Qantas fly to Wagga Wagga daily. Avis, Budget and Country Car Hire are available at the airport; you’ll need at least five days to take in the same path, but a few extra days will allow for time to savour it all.

Stay there:  You’ll find a range of deals at visitnsw.com and links to accommodation. Rates range from $195–$350 per night for the Lake Hut and $295–$495 per night for the River Hut at Moonbah Huts depending on the season and the number of guests. Creel Lodge in Jindabyne and Yarrangobilly Caves House are two other great options, which are available to book through nationalparks.nsw.gov.au with prices on application.

Play there:  The snow season ends around September, but has been know to filter into October on rare occasions – the picking seasons operate December through until May. Mouat Farm  and Wilgro Orchards are great places to stop and fill your basket with goodies.

We love the Snowy Mountains in Summer! I would also add that the Wild Brumby Distillery is a must (just outside Jindabyne) , a look through Ebony and Chrome Boutique (trust me ladies) and dinner at Cocina Mexican Grill and Cantina (overlooking Lake Jindabyne … so lovely on a balmy night).

There’s so much to do in the Snowy Mountains in the summer months. Try also trekking to the top of Mt Kosciuszko or mountain biking in Thredbo and the Thredbo Valley Track or around Jindabyne. There’s also fun horse riding tours and the lakes and waterways are spectacular. Well worth a visit.

Canberra Day Trips: Snowy Hydro Scheme

snowy mountain tour from canberra

Tumut 3 power station, via Snowy Hydro .

The Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme has been described as the smartest thing Australia ever built, but the integrated water and hydro-electric power utility is much more than just a marvel of engineering. While there are plenty of places you can view the magnificent sights of the Scheme – like dams, power stations, and pumping stations – there’s no better place to begin than the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre in Cooma . From there, it’s a short drive to the townships of Adaminaby and Talbingo , where there are further opportunities to discover more about the Scheme and appreciate its size and significance.

The Snowy Hydro Scheme is an impressive construction that can generate large amounts of peak-load electricity. It took 25 years to build, which reflects its size and complexity, and it played a significant role in Australia’s history. Around 100,000 people worked on the Scheme between 1949 and 1974, with two thirds of them immigrants, mostly from war-devastated Europe, which brought enormous cultural diversity to the young nation.

Snowy Hydro is now the largest hydro-electric scheme in the country, harnessing the waters of the Snowy River to provide electricity and diverting water through power stations into the catchments of the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers. There are many places in the region from which to see the various components of the scheme.

snowy mountain tour from canberra

Map via Snowy Hydro .

A visit to the Snowy Hydro Scheme lends itself perfectly to a day trip. From Canberra, it’s an easy hour’s drive down the Snowy Mountains Highway to Cooma, where you’ll find the Discovery Centre. It’s the kind of place that has something for people of all ages. There are hands-on interpretive exhibits, interactive displays, short films and plenty of activities like riding a power bike to see how much electricity you can generate.

From Cooma, it’s a quick hop to Adaminaby , where you’ll find the Snowy Scheme Museum . It holds materials relating to the design, construction and operation of the Scheme. Visitors can check out machinery, historic vehicles, laboratory equipment, surveying and drafting equipment, artworks, photographs, maps, plans, paper records, books, pamphlets, newsletters, small tools and equipment, precision instruments, medical equipment and domestic items of the Scheme’s era. Just check opening times before you go because these may vary.

If you’re keen to keep driving for another hour, head to Talbingo , home to the largest power station in the Scheme, Tumut 3. There is a Visitor Centre that has plenty of information and displays. Head up the road to Talbingo Reservoir and check out the imposing dam wall. A few minutes away are the Jounama release gates, where water is released into Blowering Reservoir.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BWMNFl9FfoW/

The roads and drives around the Scheme are some of the most scenic in Australia, with many, like Snowy Mountains Highway and Alpine Way built specifically for the Scheme, so if it’s incredible mountain peaks, breathtaking views and winding roads you’re after, take a drive further afield and explore the region. There are display centres and visitor centres dotted around the Snowy Mountains, so you can choose your own adventure – you just need a decent guide book to help you plan your journey.

snowy mountain tour from canberra

Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre Cooma, from Snowy Hydro .

Why you’ll love it

  • There is no shortage of imposing sights to see. With the Snowy Hydro Scheme boasting sixteen major dams, seven power stations and two pumping stations, you can take your pick of places to visit, and watch how the Scheme harnesses the power of nature to provide us with electricity.
  • The Discovery Centre in Cooma is fascinating! The staff are friendly, you’ll find all the information you need, you can take a guided tour, take some photos or buy some memorabilia. Have fun with display screens that work in real time so you can see which generators are operating and how much electricity they’re producing.
  • Pack yourself a picnic lunch and enjoy a picnic in Cooma next to a couple of impressive turbine runners, or further along the road to Adaminaby and Talbingo, where you can find spectacular views and gorgeous alpine vistas.
  • The Snowy Hydro Scheme has been added to the National Heritage List in recent years, formalising its importance in Australia’s story and its well-deserved place in our nation’s history. The day trip is a great way to connect with that history and get up close to impressive structures and hear some moving stories.

Getting there

Head to Cooma from Canberra on the Monaro Highway, then turn onto the Snowy Mountains Highway to reach Adaminaby and Talbingo.

If you decide to venture further into the Snowy Mountains, planning is essential. Self-driving can take you into some remote areas, and while there is a network of sealed roads, some may be closed in cooler weather. It is recommended that you carry chains during snow season if you’re going past Cooma.

There’s a handy driving guide for suggested itineraries and more information about the Scheme.

Spring, summer and autumn mean less crowds, fewer vehicles on the roads and less likelihood of road closures because of snow.

The snow season runs from June to October, peaking between July and August, so there is usually more traffic at that time as well.

Key details

  • Duration: The Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre is only a couple of minutes from downtown Cooma and for those travelling south from Canberra, a little over one hour away. If you’re travelling on to Adaminaby, allow an extra 45 minutes, and another hour from there to Talbingo.
  • Distance from Canberra: Travel 95 km along the Monaro Highway to Cooma and then another 50 km to Adaminaby and just under another 100 km to Talbingo.
  • Recommended for: Anyone interested in Australia’s history, construction, engineering, technology, science, how things work, and the wonders of nature.

snowy mountain tour from canberra

Posted on 15 July, 2021

One of canberra’s most beloved neighbours, the snowies were dealt a terrible blow during the 2019/20 bushfire season—and now they’re facing a second peak season with no visitors from sydney or victoria..

So why not help out by spending some tourist dollars there this winter?

Even if you don’t ski or snowboard—or don’t even want to stay the night—there’s so much to see, do, eat and drink.

The best part? With most attractions located just 1.5 hours from Canberra, it’s an easy weekend or even a day trip.

The NSW Snowy Mountains are a pristine playground waiting to be explored. With Australia’s highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko , towering above and some of Australia’s best skiing and mountain bike trails at  Thredbo  and  Perisher , there are endless options for adventure.

Kosciuszko Alpine Way

Although a renowned winter wonderland, the Snowy Mountains are in fact an ideal road trip destination for any time of the year. With excellent hiking , glacial fishing, extreme mountain bike riding and some of the most picturesque locations Australia has to offer, the Kosciuszko region is a must-do.

After four days on the road here, we’re already planning our next trip — the entire region is mind-blowing!

From Cooma to Jindabyne

Cooma is a beautiful old heritage town; the perfect place to stock up and start our radical alpine trip. We stop and picnic on local produce at Centennial Park and get ready to hit the road — mountain bound.

Anticipation mounts as the road starts to wind, curving us closer to promises of high altitude adventure. We’re ready to tackle the legendary Snowy Mountains.

A glimpse of snow-tipped mountains sends excitement through the roof, we’re all psyched to be cruising into Jindabyne on a cracking bluebird afternoon.

A quick stop off to sample a schooner of the cold nectar of the mountains at the Kosciuszko Pale Ale Brewery , before we get an early night in readiness for tomorrow.

Trout Fishing and River Camping

Lake Jindabyne and its surrounding lakes are renowned for some of the best trout fishing in Australia, so we cast a line and test out our luck. No bites yet, so we head into town for a feed.

If, like us, you need a hand hooking one,  Steve Williamson’s Fishing Adventures will help you get a fish on the line.

A sneaky skate down a winding alpine road precedes the hunt for a resting ground before our 4am hike up the Main Range track  towards Mount Twynam.

We settle down at Island Bend Campground  and it’s the most spectacular camp spot I’ve ever experienced. A bloke in town tells us the stargazing is ‘unreal’ and he’s bang on the money – the sky lights up and the Milky Way dances across the night while we set up camp.

One thing is guaranteed, your dinner will taste 100% better while watching shooting stars fall out of the sky.

Peaking at Mt Twynam

The alarm rings, we cruise down the road and hit the trail, traversing our way to the top of Mount Twynam as the sun rises over the majestic Alps. The light slowly consumes the stars, turning the horizon the wildest shades of orange and pink.

On we trek, the rising sun warming our backs. En-route we check out the surreal Blue Lake , nestled between the mountains.

This is a beautifully scenic alpine hike complete with tranquil creeks and a crossing of the infamous Snowy River. Whether you’re a hiking nut or more into leisurely strolls, the National Park has you covered.

Ain Raadik, Southern Alps, We Are Explorers, Destination NSW, Kosciuszko

The hiking conditions at this time of year are all time*, with beautiful clear days and enough snow to give you the true Snowy Mountains experience.

*Ashlee did this hike in early June. This hike can range from hot and exposed trekking to deep snow and strong winds, so be sure to check the conditions and prepare accordingly.

Hiking and Biking in Thredbo

We hit the road at dawn, ready to tackle Lake Crackenback’s network of mountain bike trails, speeding past frosty lakes, trout fisherman and rugged surroundings. Feeling lazy?

Try an electric bike and absorb the thrill of the tracks without tiring yourself out. Lake Crackenback has something for everyone — cast a line, stroll along one of the many walking trails along the lake or stay the night in a cosy chalet.

It was time to head off for a late afternoon mission to the crème da la crème hike of the region –the Mount Kosciuszko summit hike . We catch the chairlift up from Thredbo and wind our way up to the peak using socks as makeshift gloves.

The gentle bubble of the many streams surround us as we trek our way to the highest point in Australia.

We arrive for sunset, and what a sunset it is! The colours in the sky seem to be magnified in this region and the view from the top is mind-blowing. Valleys fill with fog as the moon comes out to play and we are stoked to be the highest people in Australia.

Someone mentions a pub meal and that’s all the push we need — adrenaline speeds us back in record time for recalibration and a cold one at the Thredbo Local Pub .

The Alpine Way to The Yarrangobilly Caves

After a massive few days of adventure we’re happy to soak in the dramatic scenery of the Alpine Way drive from the comfort of a car.

This spectacular drive continues all the way down to the little town of Khancoban and is an adventure in itself with multiple walking trails, lookouts and little campsites tucked in beside untouched creeks and lakes.

After exploring the peaks of Kosciuszko it’s time to head down into the pits at the Yarrangobilly Caves . Yarrangobilly is an unexpected highlight of the trip — this ancient labyrinth is millions of years old, and with eight tunnels to explore, it’s well worth the drive.

Ain Raadik, Southern Alps, We Are Explorers, Destination NSW, Kosciuszko, snow mountains road trip

Limestone juts into the valley as we wind our way to the magnificent Harrie Wood Cave. We descend into the depths of the rock, the shimmering cave enclosing us in its jaws of glittering stalactites and stalagmites.

If you’re looking to delve further, adventure caving will see you crawling and swimming your way through the underground systems, guided by an expert team .

It’s time to cap off an amazing trip with a soak in the natural thermal pool , as mist rises through the gum trees up through the valley. What a spot to soak our weary bones and reflect on a massive adventure through the stunning Snowy Mountains.

Go On Your Own Snowy Mountains Road Trip!

There’s something so unique and uplifting about alpine areas, and the Snowy Mountains certainly deliver. Although only a short road trip away, the mountains hold a certain rawness that evokes the promise of freedom, a million miles away from the trials and tribulations of everyday life.

Banjo Patterson’s words still resonate today, jump on the road and escape to the mountains where ‘the air is clear as crystal, and the white stars fairly blaze’ — you will not regret it.

Essential Gear

  • Hiking boots
  • Warm, waterproof clothes (be prepared for an alpine climate — in winter this area is covered in snow and parts of the region require an understanding of backcountry travel )
  • Plenty of drinking water for hikes
  •  Sunglasses
  • Swimming clothes

Start & End Points

Start in Cooma and end at Kosciuszko National Park. See here for more info on the Kosciuszko Alpine Way .
