What benefits can I get with a Visa Platinum credit card?

Other platinum credit card perks, what else do i need to think about when looking at visa platinum credit cards.

While all Visa credit cards include features such as global acceptance and support for lost or stolen cards, Visa Platinum cards offer you even more premium perks and benefits. A Visa Platinum card could give you more points per $1 spent, access to pre-sale ticket offers or even hotel upgrades (among other things).

Platinum cards also usually have higher annual fees than regular cards, which means it's important to make sure you get enough value from the perks to justify the costs.

The perks you'll get typically depend on the bank or issuer and the platinum credit card you choose. But some of the benefits specific to Visa Platinum cards include:

  • 24/7 concierge services. Access the Visa Concierge Service with a phone call or email at any time of day (or night) to get help booking restaurants, flights or concert tickets. Sometimes, the concierge can even get you special discounts or upgrades on the booking. A credit card concierge can also help with other requests, such as planning events, buying flowers for someone, or sourcing other gifts and items on your must-have list.
  • Visa Offers + Perks. All Visa cards have access to Visa Offers + Perks , but some are exclusively available for Platinum and other premium Visa credit cards. Offers vary but could include premium golf perks, car rental upgrades, online shopping discounts or complimentary gifts.
  • Visa Luxury Hotel Collection. Use your Australian-issued Visa Platinum card to book accommodation through visaluxuryhotels.com and get access to exclusive benefits including a best-rate guarantee. Other perks vary by hotel and availability, but could include complimentary room upgrades, complimentary Wi-Fi in your room, and food or beverage credit.
  • Pre-sale tickets. Get access to exclusive ticket offers for music tours, festivals and live shows, with partners including Ticketek.
  • Global Customer Assistance. Whether you’re at home or out trotting the globe, Global Customer Assistance provides 24/7 support in case you lose your card and need a card replacement or emergency cash.

Tip: Save time by asking the concierge for help

If you don't have time to search for an offer or perk, you could ask the concierge for help. You can find the contact number on your card, or use one of the numbers below:

  • Visa concierge (Australia): 1800 639 607
  • ANZ: 1300 580 765 (personal cards) or 1800 233 688 and Option 3 (business cards)
  • NAB Platinum: 1300 730 213 and Option 6 (personal cards) or 1300 496 080 and Option 5 (commercial)
  • NAB Signature: 1300 489 410 and Option 6 (personal cards) or 1300 498 594 and Option 6 (commercial)
  • Westpac: 1300 791 188 (BusinessChoice Rewards Platinum)

If you have the Visa Concierge app, you can also send requests or make bookings directly from your phone.

As well as perks available directly through Visa, some of the other perks you'll find on platinum credit cards include:

  • More rewards potential. Platinum rewards and frequent flyer credit cards have bigger bonus points offers and earn more points per $1 compared to their basic counterparts.
  • Airport lounge access. Some platinum Visa credit cards offer complimentary airport lounge invitations or global lounge access through Qantas, Virgin Australia or a lounge partner such as Priority Pass or LoungeKey .
  • Complimentary travel insurance. This ranges from comprehensive cover for overseas trips to interstate flight or hotel cover, transit accident insurance and car rental excess insurance .
  • Complimentary purchase insurance. Purchase cover can include purchase protection insurance against loss, theft or accidental damage, smartphone insurance, extended warranty cover and price guarantee schemes for eligible items you buy with your card.

Finder survey: How often do Australians use their credit card when travelling overseas?

The benefits, rewards and privileges you can get with a Visa Platinum card are only really worth it if they offer you more value than what you pay for the card. So, make sure you also look at the following features:

  • Rewards. If you're looking at rewards cards , think about what type of points you'll earn and the ways you can redeem them to decide whether you'll get value out of the program.
  • Interest rates. Platinum cards generally charge higher interest rates than regular cards. So, if you don't pay off your balance by the due date on each statement, these costs could quickly add up.
  • Annual fee. This is also usually higher among premium cards, which means the perks will only be worth it if you think you will realistically use them every 12 months.
  • Credit limit. Platinum cards may have higher minimum credit limits than standard cards. So ask yourself whether a higher limit would be useful, or whether it could tempt you to overspend.
  • Eligibility criteria. A platinum credit card may require a higher minimum income than regular cards, although not all providers list these details as part of the application requirements.

Does ANZ Platinum Visa card insurance cover 80 years and over for an overseas trip

Avatar

Hi Mary, The ANZ Platinum credit card travel insurance policy is available for people aged 80 if they meet the other eligibility requirements for cover before turning 81. This means you would need to spend at least $250 of your prepaid travel expenses on your eligible ANZ Platinum card, have a return overseas travel ticket before you leave Australia and meet the residency requirements. If you want insurance cover and are over 80, Finder’s guide to travel insurance for seniors may be of assistance. If you have further questions, you can contact the ANZ credit card insurance provider Allianz on 1300 135 271. I hope this helps.

Hi, i planned to travel using connecting flights which takes me to my destination after 19 hours. Thanks to VISA Platinum for offering me around 5% discount on my ticket purchases. Now i have a question, how can i benefit being a Visa card holder at the airport lounge? Is there any facility providing for the holder at the terminals? Specially in Abu Dhabi? Waiting for the response at the earliest. thanks in advance.

I am a visa platinum holder with Westpac and will be travelling soon to the UK and Europe. Could you tell me what travel insurance I will have with my platinum card. Thank you, Elaine

Thanks for your inquiry.

Your Westpac Platinum card includes a complimentary travel insurance and should meet the following eligibility requirements:

– A resident in Australia, or you currently reside in Australia and hold a valid 457 Visa. – Spend $500 or more on travel costs (e.g. return travel ticket, airport or departure taxes, prepaid overseas accommodation or travel itinerary items) before departing Australia, and charge these costs to your eligible Westpac credit card. – You have a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia. -You are not over 80 years of age when you first qualify for coverage by meeting the abovementioned three conditions.

Please refer to our Westpac Credit Card Insurance Policy Guide to find out which of these complimentary insurance policies you can take advantage of as a Westpac platinum credit card holder.

Please make sure to read the eligibility criteria, features and details of the policy, as well as the relevant Product Disclosure Statement of the policy before you travel.

I hope this helps.

Cheers, Arra

Not all Visa cardholders can benefit from free access to airport lounges, you may refer to our guide on credit cards free lounge access . Select ‘Go to Site’ to head over to their website. Hi Jonathan and thanks for your swift response. i have Visa Platinum (HSBC logo issued by SABB) and also Master Platinum. Thanks

The Best Credit Cards for Travel Insurance

A man standing beside his luggage looking at an airport flight board

Opinions, reviews, analyses & recommendations are the author’s alone, and have not been reviewed, endorsed, or approved by any of these entities. This page does not include all card companies or all available card offers.

I talk a lot about travel insurance on this website . I know it’s not an exciting topic, but it’s the one thing I won’t leave home without.

Travel insurance has saved me — and my readers — time and time again. I’ve had my gear broken and stolen, missed flights, needed doctor’s appointments, and even needed urgent medical care abroad.

I’ve learned the hard way how vital it is — especially as a budget traveler.

Fortunately, these days, many credit cards come with travel insurance. And while I always recommend that you get comprehensive travel insurance in addition, there are a number of cards out that offer pretty robust protection at no additional cost.

If you’re thinking about getting a new credit card, or if you want to know which of your current ones you can rely on for decent insurance, here’s a list of the best credit cards with travel insurance:

Table of Contents

How Credit Card Travel Insurance Works

My top pick: chase sapphire reserve®, capital one venture x, bilt rewards mastercard, the platinum card from american express, how to use your credit card’s travel insurance, frequently asked questions about credit card travel insurance.

Travel protection offered by credit cards does not cost anything extra, although nearly all of the cards that offer such insurance — with one notable exception (see below) — come with an annual fee.

It’s one of the many reasons that getting a card with an annual fee is worth it (and why I think that avoiding cards with annual fees is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when using credit cards for travel ). If something goes wrong while you’re on the road and your card’s insurance pays for it, you’ll more than recoup the annual fee right there.

The most important thing to know is that for the insurance to kick in, you must have paid for your trip using that card. However, once you do that, you’ll be covered.

While the payout limits vary greatly, as do the conditions that need to be met before coverage kicks in, these are general categories that credit card travel insurance usually covers:

  • Trip delay: covers meals, lodging, and other expenses if your trip is delayed at least six hours (for some cards, it must be at least 12)
  • Trip cancelation and interruption: reimburses trip costs if a covered reason (such as death in the family) causes you to cancel your trip or go home early
  • Rental car insurance: in the event of an accident, covers damage to the car; injuries are not covered (primary insurance kicks in before any other insurance, while if the card offers secondary insurance, you’ll have to file with your own car insurance first)
  • Baggage: covers delay of, loss of, or damage to your baggage
  • Accident insurance: in the case of death or dismemberment, you or your beneficiaries will receive a payout

While these are categories that credit cards with the best travel insurance generally include, always read the fine print of your coverage no matter what. There’s a lot in there that can change what you’re eligible for, such as what state you live in, the length of your trip, and more.

With that in mind, here are the best credit cards for travel insurance and what they cover:

This is my favorite premium rewards card . It offers the most comprehensive travel insurance out of any credit card and is one of the only ones to include any kind of medical insurance. The Reserve also offers airport lounge access, a fantastic roster of transfer partners, and an array of statement credits, including a $300 USD annual travel credit that brings the annual $550 USD fee down to a more reasonable $250 USD.

As a Visa Infinite® card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve’s travel insurance includes the following:

  • Primary car rental insurance up to $75,000 USD
  • Travel accident insurance up to $1,000,000 USD
  • Trip cancelation/interruption coverage up to $10,000 USD per person and $20,000 USD per trip
  • Trip delay coverage of $500 USD after delays of six hours or more
  • Lost luggage coverage up to $3,000 USD
  • $100 per day for up to five days if your baggage is delayed
  • Emergency medical and dental coverage up to $2,500 USD for treatment (minus a $50 USD deductible)
  • Emergency evacuation insurance up to $100,000 USD

—> LEARN MORE <—

If you don’t want to pay the high annual fee for the Reserve, the card_name offers most of the same benefits for a much lower one ($95 USD). Just note that the Preferred comes with lower payouts and more restrictions (for example, trip delay coverage doesn’t kick in until a delay of at least 12 hours). Emergency medical and evacuation insurance also isn’t covered on the Preferred. You can read my review of it here .

Additionally, if you’re eligible for a business card, the card_name has the almost the same coverage as the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

A few years ago, Capital One overhauled its cards, and the Capital One Venture X now competes with the top brands, including some of the best travel protection around. You’ll also get a generous welcome offer, lounge access, travel credits, and a solid points-earning structure. It also offers particularly unique features: you’ll earn 2x points on every purchase, and there’s no fee for up to four authorized users.

As a Visa Infinite® card, coverage is similar to that offered by the Chase Sapphire Reserve (though it doesn’t offer baggage delay, medical, or evacuation coverage, all of which the Reserve does).

The Venture X offers these protections:

  • Trip cancelation and interruption coverage up to $2,000 USD per person, per trip
  • Up to $500 USD when travel is delayed by six hours or more
  • Lost luggage up to $3,000 USD
  • Cell phone protection up to $800 USD for repair or replacement (minus a $50 USD deductible)

If you don’t want to pay the $395 USD annual fee for the Venture X, the card_name offers solid travel protection at a lower annual fee ($95 USD), though without some significant benefits, like trip interruption, cancelation, or delay insurance.

Bilt credit card

The Bilt Mastercard is the only credit card that allows you to earn points by paying your rent (they offer bonus points and perks every Rent Day as well). It also offers the best travel insurance you can get on a card with no annual fee.

Since Bilt is a World Elite Mastercard, you’ll get access to that suite of travel insurance benefits. Notably, it doesn’t have accident insurance or medical coverage, so if you’re relying on Bilt for that, you’ll want to purchase additional travel insurance that does.

Bilt’s travel insurance includes the following:

  • Primary car rental insurance up to $50,000 USD (secondary for New York State residents when renting within the US)
  • Trip cancelation and interruption coverage up to $5,000 USD
  • Trip delay coverage (after a delay of six hours) of $200 USD per day, up to $1,800 USD
  • Cell phone protection up to $800 USD minus a $25 USD deductible (cracked screens not included)

At $695 USD per year, the Platinum Card from American Express has the highest annual fee of any consumer travel card out there, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to better benefits across the board. While the Platinum does offer great travel insurance, the Chase Sapphire Reserve handily beats it in all categories.

However, the Platinum offers emergency evacuation and medical transport coverage (with no limit on cost), which can be huge if you end up needing to take advantage of it. Evacuation and transport costs can be incredibly expensive, costing upwards of $250,000 USD!

It also offers the best lounge access of any travel card, elite status benefits, travel perks, special hotel discounts, and luxury goods and service credits.

The Platinum Card’s protections include the following:

  • Trip cancelation and interruption coverage of $10,000 USD per person, per trip (on round-trip tickets only, $20,000 per 12 consecutive month period)*
  • Trip delay coverage up to $500 USD if six hours or more (on round-trip tickets only, 2 claims per card per 12 consecutive month period)*
  • Emergency evacuation and medical transport coverage: no limit; must be coordinated via the Premium Global Assist Hotline**
  • Cell phone protection up to $800 USD minus a $50 USD deductible^
  • Lost luggage coverage up to $3,000 USD per person^^
  • Secondary car rental coverage

Ensuring that you’re covered for your trip is pretty easy. Just follow these steps:

  • Use your card (or points associated with that card) to pay for your trip (flights, rental cars, hotels, etc.).
  • Keep all receipts, and take photos of everything if you need to file a claim (just in case).
  • Submit your claim ASAP if you need to file one.
  • Always read the fine print!

Do Visa credit cards come with travel insurance? Premium Visa cards come with travel insurance, and several on this list are Visa cards. Visa Platinum, Visa Signature, Visa Infinite, Visa Platinum Business, and Visa Signature Business Premium all offer some form of travel insurance. Coverage varies based on the type of card you choose.

Do credit cards automatically have travel insurance? No, which is why it’s important to know which ones do so that you can use the right card when paying for your trip. Most premium travel credit cards come with some form of insurance, but coverage does vary. Always read the fine print!

What’s the difference between credit card insurance and travel insurance? There is a lot of overlap between the two, such as trip and baggage delay coverage, trip cancelation/interruption coverage, and car rental insurance. The main difference is that standard travel insurance policies offer more comprehensive medical coverage. That’s why I always buy travel insurance before I go abroad.

How do you submit a claim for credit card insurance? Every card’s process is a bit different, but generally, you’ll need to file your claim online, including all supporting documentation. You can call the hotline on your card to get more information and to open a claim as well.

Does credit card insurance cover missed flights? It depends on the reason. Covered reasons (which depend on the card) often include a delayed flight that makes you miss your connection or an issue with your airplane or airline. But if you missed your 6am flight because you overslept, you’re out of luck.

If you’re deciding on which credit card is best for travel insurance, take a hard look at your needs so that you get the one that suits you best. If you never rent cars, you might not care about having the best car rental coverage. Maybe you care most about making sure you’re covered in the event of delays (after all, these are happening more these days). Either way, prioritize what’s important to you.

But no matter what card you get, I still recommend getting a comprehensive travel insurance policy to cover you for medical mishaps that may happen on the road. That way you’re protected no matter what happens.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Your Virgin Red promo code can be used until 30 April 2023. Make sure to redeem your code before then.

Only one Virgin Red promo code will be generated per eligible Policy.

After you’ve redeemed your Virgin Red promo code, the points are added to your Virgin Red account. There is no specific expiry date for using the points. You’ll be free to use them in line with Virgin Red’s programme terms. You can find the terms here [ http://policies.red.virgin.com/terms ].

We thought we should highlight a few key things from Virgin Red’s terms:

the points don’t have a cash value and they can’t be swapped for cash;

the available offers can change from time to time; and

the points cost for each offer can change too.

Although we’ll be working closely with our friends at Virgin Red on this promotion, we aren't responsible for their terms, their marketing, or any of the offers available through their app. Just contact Virgin Red or the relevant offer provider if you have any questions about these topics.

When can you take up the offer?

The offer will be available on an ongoing basis until we withdraw it. We can withdraw the offer without giving you any advance notice, but we’ll try to give some notice if we can.

The offer is subject to availability. This means we will definitely withdraw it when we’ve used up our stock of Virgin Red promo codes.

You don’t need to worry if we withdraw the offer when you’re part way through meeting the offer conditions. As long as you've bought the Policy before we withdraw the offer, you can still qualify. You’ll just need to continue to meet the rest of the conditions.

What else do you need to know?

You can only benefit from this offer once.

We’ll use your personal information to help us run the offer.

English law applies to the offer.

Standard Virgin Money Travel Insurance Policy conditions apply.

If something goes wrong, we’ll try to fix it. If we can’t because it’s something we can’t control, or it’s not our fault, then we may have to change the offer. This includes suspending the offer or ending it early. We can make such changes without giving you notice. However, we’ll try our best to avoid making changes. And we’ll try to minimise any disappointment to you when we make changes.

Travel insurance basics

Best visitors insurance policies, for the lowest price: trawick international, for customizing options: worldtrips, for pre-existing conditions: worldtrips, for highest medical coverage limit: img, other options to consider, the bottom line.

Since health care can be expensive in the U.S., it’s important that visitors have insurance coverage, aka visitors insurance or travel medical insurance, in case something happens that requires medical attention mid-trip.

Whether you have coverage for travel in the U.S. depends on your health care plan in your home country. But if you don't, you'll need to buy a policy from a third-party insurance provider. Several companies sell this kind of visitor insurance, and each company and policy is a bit different. Let’s look at which is best for you.

First, a few basics about visitor insurance. Two kinds are available: travel medical insurance and trip insurance.

Travel medical insurance covers medical expenses that you may incur while traveling internationally, like a visit to the doctor, a trip to the hospital and medical evacuation and repatriation.

Trip insurance usually covers limited medical expenses like emergency care and can compensate you if your trip is delayed, you need to leave the trip early or you have to cancel the trip. It is designed to help you protect the investment you’re making as you prepare to travel.

Standard trip insurance might not cover a visit to the doctor unless it is an emergency.

It’s important to make sure any pre-existing conditions are covered if the visitor has any. Some policies exclude them.

With so many kinds of visitors insurance policies, which is the best?

To make comparisons, we got quotes from several companies using Squaremouth , a website to search for different types of travel insurance in one place.

The parameters we set are for a 49-year-old citizen and resident of Spain traveling to the U.S. on May 1-31, 2024.

The quotes don't include cancellation coverage; these examples are for medical coverage only. To get a quote, the hypothetical deposit for the trip was paid on Feb. 15.

Since we’re looking for a policy that will cover medical care for visitors, there are several medical filters to select: emergency medical ($100,000 or more), medical evacuation ($100,000 or more) and coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.

The search came up with nine results ranging in price from $74.40 to $179.18.

The policy with the lowest cost was the Trawick International 's Safe Travels USA Cost Saver at $74.40.

Trawick policies use the FirstHealth PPO network.

virgin visa platinum travel insurance

The policy as quoted has a $250 deductible and includes $100,000 in emergency medical, $2 million in medical evacuation and $5,000 in interruption coverage. It has limited coverage for pre-existing conditions.

It is possible to change the deductible to as little as $0 or raise it to $5,000.

The same company has another policy, the Trawick International Safe Travels USA Comprehensive policy, that is better at covering pre-existing conditions and costs a little more — $89.59.

The general coverage is the same as the less expensive policy, and the Safe Travels USA Comprehensive option adds coverage for acute onset of a pre-existing condition. it is possible to change the deductible amount to $0 or go up to $5,000.

Some policies are sold as is, while others allow some flexibility depending on what is important to you.

The WorldTrips Atlas Premium America policy for $179.18 allows a lot of customization.

It was also the most expensive of the nine policies Squaremouth suggested.

virgin visa platinum travel insurance

It’s possible to customize the emergency medical coverage and pre-existing condition coverage and medical deductible. The policy also includes $15,000 in trip interruption coverage, the highest of any of the nine policies available.

If the traveler has a pre-existing condition, policies from WorldTrips Atlas America are your best bet. The WorldTrips Atlas America policy in our comparison costs $101.06.

virgin visa platinum travel insurance

The policy as quoted covers $100,000 in emergency medical care and $25,000 in medical evacuation for an unexpected recurrence of a pre-existing condition.

The deductible is also available for customization from $0 to $5,000.

The PPO network for Atlas America Insurance is United Healthcare.

The WorldTrips Atlas Premium America policy mentioned above is also good for pre-existing condition coverage.

While eight of the nine policies had $100,000 in secondary medical coverage, one had a limit of $2 million.

The IMG Patriot America Platinum policy has a premium of $172.36 along with a high medical evacuation limit of $2 million and interruption coverage of $10,000.

virgin visa platinum travel insurance

If $2 million in medical coverage is not enough, it’s possible to increase that amount to an $8 million policy limit.

It’s not possible to change the level of coverage for preexisting conditions from the high $1 million limit in emergency medical care and $25,000 in medical evacuation for an unexpected recurrence.

It is possible to change the deductible from $0 all the way up to $25,000.

Our comparison also included policies from two additional companies, Seven Corners and Global Underwriters .

Seven Corners had two policies come up in the results, the Seven Corners Travel Medical Basic for $98.27 and the Seven Corners Travel Medical Choice policy for $136.71. Both of the Seven Corners policies include coverage for hurricane and weather, and the less expensive policy covers acts of terrorism.

Having insurance to cover unexpected medical expenses for anyone visiting the U.S. can be a smart money move.

An illness or accident could cause financial problems for visitors because of potentially having to pay for full health care costs. When planning your travel, be sure to check your current health insurance to find out if it will cover you in the U.S.

For a monthlong stay in the U.S., the lowest-priced visitors insurance policy was around $75 (Trawick International Safe Travels USA Cost Saver) and the highest was about $180 (WorldTrips Atlas Premium America). That’s about $2.42 or $5.81 a day, depending on the policy.

Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance

Amex Car Rental Insurance

The Amex Platinum card comes with complimentary standard car rental insurance that provides secondary coverage when using your card to reserve and pay for your entire rental car contract. You also have the option to purchase premium primary car rental coverage .

For either coverage to be valid, you must decline the rental car agency’s LDW (loss damage waiver) or CDW (collision damage waiver) coverage when renting the vehicle.

Here’s an overview of how both of these coverages work:

Secondary (standard) coverage means that you must first file a claim with any other applicable insurance you might have before the card coverage applies.

You can expect to receive excess secondary coverage for these losses:

  • Damage to and theft of the vehicle
  • Personal property up to $1,000 per person/$2,000 per accident
  • Accidental injury up to $5,000 per claimant
  • Accidental death/dismemberment up to $300,000

This is just a snapshot of the standard secondary car rental coverage; several terms and conditions apply. You should access the official guide to benefits or call your benefits administrator for specific information.

One of the real car rental insurance perks of holding the Amex Platinum card is having access to Premium Car Rental Protection coverage for just 1 low fee that covers the entire rental period, not a per-day charge like the rental agency charges.

Although there are some credit cards with primary rental car insurance , the American Express Premium Car Rental Protection coverage, in some circumstances, can provide equal or better coverage and elevated peace of mind. Terms and conditions apply.

Bottom Line: Consider Amex Premium Car Rental Protection if you don’t have a credit card that provides primary car rental insurance. Additionally, if you are renting an expensive vehicle that exceeds your card’s limit of coverage or the maximum length of the rental period on your other card is limited to less than 42 days, the Amex Premium Car Rental Protection could also be a prudent choice.

Trip Delay

Trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance are designed to cover unexpected, unforeseen events that may cause you to have to cancel your trip or that cause a disruption in a trip you’re already started.

To be eligible for coverage, purchase your entire round-trip common carrier ticket with your Amex Platinum card.

American Express has a broad definition of who is covered under this benefit. Eligible travelers can include the cardholder, traveling companion, family member of the eligible traveler, or family member of the traveling companion.

Examples of events that could be covered include the following:

  • Bodily Injury or Illness — If you, a traveling companion, or a family member of either, experience an accidental injury or become ill, causing you to cancel your trip, you may have coverage
  • Bad Weather — If extreme weather causes your trip to be canceled or disrupted, there could be coverage
  • Change in Military Orders —Applies to cardmember and/or spouse (spouse definition includes domestic partner)
  • Terrorist action or hijacking
  • Jury duty or other qualifying legal obligation
  • Uninhabitable dwelling of either the cardmember or traveling companion
  • Quarantine imposed by a physician for health reasons

You can expect coverage of up to $10,000 per trip , and a maximum limit of $20,000 per card per 12-month period.

Terms and conditions apply.

Bottom Line: While the trip cancellation/trip interruption benefit covers specifically stated reasons for trip cancellation/interruption, there is no coverage for voluntary cancellations, disruptions due to known events, or for preexisting conditions. Additional terms and conditions can be found in your guide to benefits or call the benefits administrator prior to your trip.

Experiencing a trip delay is inevitable so having coverage for added expenses as a result of that delay could be a welcome economic benefit. To qualify for trip delay coverage, just pay for the full amount of your common carrier round-trip transportation ticket with your Amex Platinum card.

The delay must be for more than 6 hours for you to be eligible for reimbursement for necessary incidentals, meals, and lodging.

Coverage limits are $500 per covered trip and a maximum of up to 2 covered trips in each consecutive 12-month period. Coverage is secondary to other coverage that applies and does not include expenses that are reimbursed by the airline or other entities. Additional terms and conditions also apply.

Losing a checked bag used to be a very common occurrence. With new technology and tracking mechanisms, however, incidents have declined, but they still happen. If you do happen to experience lost bags, however, you can count on the baggage insurance found on the Amex Platinum card.

To activate the coverage , simply pay for your common-carrier fare with your card and/or Membership Rewards points.

Here’s the coverage you can expect for lost luggage:

  • Checked Bags — Up to $2,000 per covered person, per trip
  • Carry-on Bags — Up to $3,000 per covered person, per trip
  • Specialty High-value Items — Up to $1,000 per person, per covered trip ($2,000 for New York residents, maximum $10,000 per trip)
  • Combined Limit — The limit for all baggage, including high-risk items, is $3,000 per covered person, per single trip

Checked baggage is covered only while traveling on a common carrier . Carry-on baggage is additionally covered while traveling to , from , and when waiting at the carrier terminal.

Note that the coverage on the card is secondary to any other insurance or reimbursement you might receive from the airline. There is no coverage for delayed baggage , but several other credit cards do offer this coverage .

Premium Global Assist Hotline

Snowboarders on chair lift

While technically not insurance coverage, having access to help when you’re traveling, 24/7, is sure to provide additional peace of mind. The Amex Platinum card offers a premium version of a dedicated helpline that serves as a welcome resource should things go wrong during your travels.

Here are the types of assistance you can expect from the service:

One of the premium services offered on the card is complimentary emergency medical transport or evacuation . If you or a covered family member becomes injured or ill during your travels, you could receive emergency medical transportation or evacuation , if necessary.

You can expect to receive the following services without charge when arranged via the hotline:

  • Emergency Transport or Evacuation — Transport to the nearest medical facility or transport from an inadequate medical facility
  • Transport of Family Member — Transport may be covered for an adult member to be by the bedside of the cardmember or for the cardmember’s minor child (who had been traveling alone with the cardmember) to be transported back to the U.S.
  • Transport of Remains — Amex will pay for the transport of remains back to the U.S.
  • Post-Evacuation Assistance — If you’re evacuated and your return ticket back to the U.S. has become invalid, Amex will arrange and pay for transportation back to the U.S.

Please note that the Premium Global Assist Hotline does not cover any medical expenses or emergency transportation services arranged outside of the hotline. Several terms and conditions apply to these coverages.

In addition to the complimentary coverages offered by the hotline, you’ll find these additional medical services:

  • Medical Referrals — Receive help finding an English-speaking doctor, a hospital, or other needed medical services
  • Prescription Replacement Assistance — Get help with replacing lost or forgotten medications

There is no charge for the referral service but cardmembers are responsible for actual services received from the provider.

  • Passport/Visa Assistance — Whether you need help replacing a passport or have a need to contact the U.S. consulate, the hotline can assist
  • Emergency Translation Services — Receive over-the-phone services or written language translation assistance
  • Legal Referrals — Should you need legal services during your trip, the hotline can help you find local bail bond services that accept Amex or refer you to other legal personnel
  • Financial Assistance — The hotline can help you arrange cash wire services, help you check out of your hotel remotely, or assist with lost card situations
  • Emergency Message Relay — In the event of an emergency, the hotline can send a message to a family member, friend, or another recipient on your behalf
  • Lost Items — Should you lose an item, your baggage gets lost, or other missing possession, the hotline can help track it down
  • Trip Planning Services — Access information such as weather, currency exchange rates, passport/visa requirements, customs information, travel warnings, and more

Bottom Line: The Amex Platinum card comes with complimentary emergency transportation and evacuation services with no stated limit. Additional medical, legal, and travel service referrals are also complimentary, but other than the emergency medical transportation and evacuation, services rendered must be paid for by the cardholder.

As with any insurance claim, you’ll need to report any event as soon as possible, provide supporting documentation, and follow up after the claim has been filed.

You could be expected to submit any, or all, of the following:

  • Copies of your common carrier ticket
  • Copies of your credit card statement showing the expenses
  • Proof of the loss (i.e. a copy of physician’s quarantine order, military orders, etc.)
  • Copy of the travel supplier’s cancellation policy
  • Any other supporting documentation requested by the claims administrator

Claims must be reported within 60 days but it is best to do it as soon as possible. Once you report the claim, you’ll receive instructions for completing the next steps in the process.

Hot Tip: Be sure to take photos and videos, keep receipts, secure any applicable police report, and hold on to other documentation that might be needed to support your claim. Keep in mind that supporting information can be difficult to obtain after the fact but may be readily secured at the time of the claim.

While the insurance that comes with the Amex Platinum card won’t take the place of a comprehensive travel insurance policy , you’ll find value in several of the benefits.

Utilizing Premium Car Rental Protection, trip cancellation/interruption, trip delay, and complimentary emergency medical transport or evacuation could save you more than you could imagine in certain circumstances.

Additionally, knowing the coverages you have in advance has tremendous value. You’ll be armed with information to make educated decisions that can protect each aspect of your trip and be better prepared for how you might handle a covered incident during your travels. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the amex platinum card travel insurance any good.

While the insurance that comes on your Amex Platinum card does not replace a comprehensive travel insurance policy, there is value in the coverages that come complimentary on the card.

Benefits such as trip interruption/cancellation/delay insurance and Amex Premium Car Rental Protection can provide economic value by saving you money should something go wrong during your travels.

Having access to the Premium Global Assist Hotline and complimentary emergency medical transport or evacuation could render peace of mind knowing you have the coverage should you need it.

Does the Amex Platinum card cover flight cancellations?

The Amex Platinum card comes with trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay insurance that can cover flight cancellations for only the specific (limited) reasons listed in the terms and conditions.

As with most insurance, the coverage that comes on your card is not meant to cover voluntary flight cancellations.

For these types of cancellations, you would need to purchase Cancel for Any Reason Insurance , which can be added to some comprehensive travel insurance policies.

Does the Amex Platinum card come with primary car rental insurance?

No. The Amex Platinum card comes with complimentary standard secondary car rental insurance, which means you must first file a claim with any other insurance that may apply before the card coverage is valid.

However, the card does offer a unique benefit that allows you to purchase premium primary car rental insurance for 1 low fee that covers the entire rental period.

This coverage is valid for rental periods up to 42 days in length and costs $12.25 to $24.95 per period, depending on the state in which you reside and the coverage limit you select.

Does the Amex Platinum have delayed baggage insurance?

While the Amex Platinum card comes with lost, stolen, or damaged luggage coverage, it does not offer a delayed baggage benefit.

New Zealand will require visa applicants to speak English as its government blasts ‘unsustainable’ migration

Erica Stanford at the annual National Party Conference in Wellington, New Zealand, June 25, 2023. Stanford is New Zealand’s minister of immigration and education.

It’s going to be more difficult to move to New Zealand. A bumper year for inward migration, more than double what official forecasters predicted, is pushing the country’s government to tighten its worker visa system to control an “unsustainable” level of immigration.

On Sunday, New Zealand’s government reported that 173,000 noncitizens migrated to the country last year, almost a record. The figure is also more than twice what forecasters predicted in May 2023, when officials projected that just 82,500 migrants would move to the country, with a current population of 5.1 million overall.

“Getting our immigration settings right is critical to this government’s plan to rebuild the economy,” said Erica Stanford, minister of immigration and education, in Sunday’s statement.

New Zealand will now impose an English-language requirement on those applying for worker visas, including for low-skilled jobs. The government is also reducing the length of stay to three years, down from five.

The government argued the new language requirement will ensure that incoming migrants better understand their rights, and raise concerns to the authorities. In February, New Zealand’s Public Service Commission, which oversees the country’s public sector organizations, alleged that loose visa rules exposed migrants to exploitation, or allowed them to effectively buy jobs.

According to government data, citizens from India, the Philippines, and China were the top three sources of inward migration by foreign nationals in 2023.

Advocates for the country’s migrant labor and ethnic communities told Radio New Zealand that they welcomed some of the changes, like the English-language requirement, yet felt the new rules did not do enough to tackle the risk of exploitation, and could also lead to visa processing delays.

New Zealand has tightened its immigration rules before. In September 2022, the government updated the country’s golden visa scheme—popular among Chinese investors—to bar property investments as a way to qualify. The government also increased the necessary investment threshold to receive the visa.

Applications dropped significantly after the rule change.

Migration to New Zealand surged after the country lowered COVID restrictions in 2022, allowing foreign workers to move to the country to fill labor shortages, particularly in lower-skilled jobs and the education sector. Yet policymakers warned last year that the surge in migration could also be fanning inflation as new arrivals drove up rent and housing prices.

Tightening rules

Countries that have attracted migrants are now changing their rules owing to concerns over housing affordability , inflation , and increased competition for domestic jobs.

In December, Australia said it would increase English language requirements for student and graduate visa applications. Officials argued the move would halve the country’s migrant intake over the next two years.

Last month, Singapore imposed higher salary requirements for work visas, with manpower minister Tan See Leng citing the need for “a level-playing field for locals.” The change will go into effect next year. The tightened visa rules follow a March 2023 decision to raise the threshold for global investors seeking permanent residency in the city-state.

Platinum spot price

Platinum price chart.

The chart below shows how the spot price of platinum is trending over the year.

Year to date, platinum is down 0.29%, as of 9 a.m. The 52-week high reached $1,135.49 on April 21, 2023, and the 52-week low dropped to $843.15 on Nov. 10, 2023.

The precious, silvery-colored metal is priced in U.S. dollars. This means that the fluctuations in the value of the U.S. dollar can impact its price.

The price of XPT/USD reflects the value of one ounce of platinum in U.S. dollars, and it is traded like traditional currency pairs. Because platinum trades occur globally, investors can also track the spot price of platinum in other currencies, such as XPT/EUR for euros and XPT/GBP for British pounds.

Factors that can influence the price of platinum include changes in demand, geopolitical events and tensions in major platinum-producing countries. Of course, investor opinion and speculation can also affect prices.

Precious metals spot prices

Platinum is one of four main precious metals investors can trade via physical bullion, exchange-traded products or futures contracts. Gold , silver and palladium spot prices are also updated 24/7 in various currencies.

Platinum vs. gold price

Currently, platinum trades at $984.87 per ounce, as of 9 a.m., compared to gold, which trades at $2,349.44 per ounce. Year to date, platinum prices are down by 0.29% and gold prices are up by 13.70%.

“Historically, platinum has often been more expensive than gold due to its relative scarcity and unique properties. However, the price of platinum can fluctuate in response to changing market conditions,” said John Bergquist, president of Elysium Financial.

Political instability and supply disruptions in major platinum-producing regions like South Africa and Russia affect prices.

The silvery metal also tends to be a less reliable store of value than gold.

While historically, platinum has been pricier than gold, that flip-flopped briefly in August 2011. When looking at the gold-to-platinum price ratio, platinum was priced above gold from January 2013 until December 2014. Since then, gold has more than doubled its value compared to platinum prices.

Platinum price history

Like any metal, the price of platinum can be volatile. Various factors affect it, the most significant being supply and demand dynamics. Other factors, such as economic conditions, geopolitical events, and changes in industrial and investment demand, can also impact the price of platinum.

At the start of the new millennium, the precious metal’s spot price was around $420. Fast-forward over 20 years, and the current price of platinum has more than doubled.

The spot price soared to new heights, trading in February 2008 at around $2,200 per troy ounce. In November of that year, the price returned to less than $1,000.

Platinum’s spot price has fluctuated between around $800 to $1,400 for the past decade, hovering around the $1,000 threshold on average.

Platinum prices today remain historically low. Prices dropped as low as $623.50 in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. While prices have recovered, platinum is nowhere near its all-time high of $2,213.20, set on March 3, 2008.

Platinum futures

Futures contracts let investors speculate on the future price movements of an underlying asset like platinum.

These financial contracts represent an agreement between two parties to trade a set amount of platinum at a specified price at a future date. They can be settled by exchanging the physical commodity or cash in place of the commodity.

Futures contracts differ from spot prices in that futures contracts establish a future price whereas spot prices are for immediate delivery. These contracts can be fulfilled by trading the physical commodity or exchanging cash in place of the underlying asset. They are usually traded through an exchange.

Platinum as an investment

The automotive industry creates the highest demand for platinum. Platinum is a key component in manufacturing catalytic converters, which are responsible for reducing vehicle emissions.

In addition to the automotive industry, platinum is widely used in the industrial industry to create medical products, nitric acid and glass. As the demand for these products rises, so does the price of platinum.

It is anticipated that platinum will play an essential role in the development of hydrogen technology. Platinum is used to produce carbon-free hydrogen from renewable energy.

“If hydrogen-based power meets expectations in the coming decade, then one could expect a material demand tailwind in platinum,” said Stash Graham, managing director of Graham Capital Wealth Management.

Precious metals such as platinum, gold and silver have long been used to diversify an investment portfolio.

When choosing investments, it is crucial to consider potential drawbacks. While there may be an increase in the demand for platinum, other factors may throw a wrench in the investment benefits.

When considering an investment, it is essential to consider your current holdings and individual financial goals.

Platinum is rarer than both silver and gold, which could make it attractive to investors seeking a scarce metal. This practice helps protect other holdings, such as stocks , in an economic downturn. Investing in platinum can help balance inflation and economic uncertainties.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

The highest platinum price was $2,213 on March 3, 2008. This notable high can be attributed to critical supply issues in South Africa, the world’s largest platinum producer. Both geopolitical and economic factors played a role in this price hike during the recession.

The London Bullion Market Association is responsible for price auctions of platinum and other industrial metals.
