Train announce first UK tour in seven years

They play four headline shows

Fresh from playing a gargantuan 50-date tour across the US, Train have announced a headline UK tour for April 2024.

The ‘Drops of Jupiter’ hitmakers open their first UK tour in seven years at Manchester O2 Apollo on Friday 26th April 2024 and visit Wolverhampton The Halls and Glasgow O2 Academy before concluding at London Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday 30th April.

Following the UK dates, Train's 'I Know, It's Been A Long Time Coming' tour will travel through cities in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark before concluding in South Africa on 11th May.

Tickets to the quartet of UK concerts go on sale from Absolute Radio Tickets at 10am on Friday 22nd September.

Commenting on the tour, Train frontman Pat Monahan enthuses: “We are absolutely thrilled to return to the UK for the first time in seven years.

“Fans over there have supported us throughout our career and we can’t wait to see them all again. And to get the chance to perform at the legendary Royal Albert Hall for the first time is an absolute honour.”

Since their inception in 1994, Train have sold more than 10 million albums and 30 million singles worldwide.

Alongside their ubiquitous smash ‘Drops of Jupiter’, other hits they’ve scored in the UK include ‘Drive By’ and ‘Hey, Soul Sister.’

The band line-up features Pat Monahan (lead vocals), Hector Maldonado (bass, vocals), Jerry Becker (keyboards, vocals), Taylor Locke (guitar, vocals), Matt Musty (drums), Sakai Smith (backup vocals), and Nikita Houston (backup vocals).

23 bands named after movies:, black sabbath.

Previously called Earth (and prior to that The Polka Tulk Blues Band), Black Sabbath named themselves after their own song 'Black Sabbath', which took its moniker from the 1963 horror anthology film of the same name starring the legendary Boris Karloff.

White Zombie

In 1985, the then 20-year-old Rob Zombie – born Robert Cummings – named his band after the 1932 horror movie White Zombie starring Bela Lugosi. The highly influential movie is widely considered the first feature length zombie film, and it even inspired Cummings' stage name.

Five Finger Death Punch

After watching Quentin Tarantino's 2004 martial arts classic Kill Bill: Volume 2, the Las Vegas metallers toyed with calling themselves Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique in homage to the character Pai Mei's fearsome killing technique. Although fascinated with the concept, former drummer Jeremy Spencer told Michigan Live in 2013: "That didn't sound cool. So, we changed it to Five Finger Death Punch."

Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden bassist and founder Steve Harris came up with the band's name after watching the 1939 movie The Man in the Iron Mask, which featured an iron maiden torture device.

The French heavy metallers take their name from Gojira, the original Japanese name for Godzilla. The 1954 Japanese kaiju film directed by Ishirō Honda is widely regarded as a classic of cinema.

My Bloody Valentine

It's widely reported that the influential Irish shoegaze band are named after the 1981 Canadian slasher film My Bloody Valentine. However, MBV vocalist and guitarist Kevin Shields claims that it was only a few years after they formed that they discovered they shared their moniker with a "really crap terrible Canadian film."

Canadian purveyors of apocalyptic post-rock, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, are named after the 1976 Japanese documentary film God Speed You! Black Emperor, directed by Mitsuo Yanagimachi. The film follows a group of motorcyclists called the Black Emperors.

The Searchers

The Merseybeat group took their name from the epic Western film The Searchers, starring John Wayne and directed by John Ford.

Scottish post rockers Mogwai are named after the ultra-cute little furry creatures in classic 1984 movie Gremlins, who turn into monstrous gremlins if you feed them past midnight.

The first of three consecutive acts named after Russ Meyer movies, Seattle grunge pioneers Mudhoney took their moniker from Meyer's 1965 movie Mudhoney.

Faster Pussycat

In 1985, a good three years before Mudhoney formed, Los Angeles hard rockers derived their name from the Russ Meyer's movie Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! about three go-go dancers who embark on a kidnapping and murder spree in the California desert.

With Mudhoney and Faster Pussycat having already taking their monikers from Russ Meyer flicks, Norwegian psych-rockers Motorpyscho named themselves in homage to Meyer's ultra-violent 1965 film Motorpsycho.

One of Finland's most popular rock bands, Eppu Normaali is a Finnish translation of "Abby Normal" from Mel Brooks' 1974 comedy horror movie Young Frankenstein.

This is the hands down best band! Not only do they have a amazing music, but the lead has the other members sing different songs as well! That is a great secure band lead! He always includes the fans in concert and it is very deliberate you can tell its not staged. I will always follow them and their amazing concert Venus. Thanks Train you are officially my favorite band. If you knew my obsession with music..that's saying a lot!

A great mix of old and new with Pat interactive with the mixed audience...

Extremely warm especially once everyone started bopping and singing although some breeze eventually started to drift through

Drinks prices were extortionate and the empty plastic glasses caused more issues once discarded on the floor ...concession and security were efficient and friendly ... Park next door .., pre book and save a few quid

Twenty minute walk to the quod along the canal for some pre concert food

Saw OAR, James Bay and Train this past Wednesday at the Hammerstein Ballroom. During the beginning of James Bay's set that there were not enough speakers to fully fill the space, but they figured out how to fix that audio by the end of the show. James Bay - Let it Go brought chills. He is so so great live - and even more talented of a live performer than he is a recorded artist. Extremely talented guitar player, and integrated rock with his adaption of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Proud Mary.' The night ended with Train - they were... AMAZING. Patrick Monahan has such a stage presence and was nothing but smiles the entire night. The set list was so on point, and even included an appearance from Matt Nathanson. They finished with Hey Soul Sista and Drops of Jupiter.

THE LIKES OF US TOUR - EUROPE 2024 / 2025

Big Big Train are delighted to announce 12 shows to take place in September and October 2024 in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway. At these performances the seven piece band will be promoting their forthcoming The Likes Of Us album, their first for the InsideOut label, which will be released on 1 st March 2024. Lead vocalist Alberto Bravin says: “We’re really looking forward to getting back on the road this autumn around the UK and Europe. Following the success of last year’s The Journey Continues tour, we can’t wait to do it all again. On this tour in autumn we will be playing a significant amount of The Likes Of Us as well as some Big Big Train classics and a few surprises.” Drummer Nick D’Virgilio adds: “Last year’s Big Big Train shows were so much fun. We made some changes to the set list every night. It was very challenging but it kept things fresh for both us and the audience, so we’re going to take a similar approach on this tour to make every show genuinely unique.” Bassist Gregory Spawton continues: “For this tour we’ve decided to return to some of our favourite venues. But we were also keen to return to Wales for the first time since 2019 and get back to the north east and north west of England as well as visiting some parts of the country where Big Big Train hasn’t played before. While some fans travel vast distances to see us live, we recognise that others aren’t able to do so and therefore we’re trying to bring the show to them.” Guitarist Rikard Sjöblom concludes: “In an ideal world, we would play everywhere! Scheduling is always challenging and so while we couldn’t organise a Swedish show this time around, I’m delighted that we will be performing in Oslo and Copenhagen again for my fellow Scandinavians. And I’m particularly looking forward to our weekend at the Boerderij where we plan to play two very different shows.”

Besides marking the debut of our new frontman Alberto Bravin, ‘The Likes Of Us’ also heralds the beginning of our new relationship with InsideOutMusic, having self-released our music for almost two decades.  

We are delighted to announce the release of ‘The Likes Of Us’. After the events of the last few years, this is a particularly important album for us, both as a band and individually. We’re very proud of the new songs, which we recorded principally in a studio in Italy. Working together in one room brought additional inspiration, real energy and a clear sense of purpose. We’re thrilled with the results.

‘The Likes Of Us’ will be released on several different formats, including for the first time as Dolby Atmos and 5.1 mix by The Pineapple Thief’s Bruce Soord , while the stereo mixes were undertaken by the band’s regular engineer Rob Aubrey and Alberto Bravin. The Dolby Atmos mix will come as part of the Limited CD & Blu-ray Mediabook edition that also contains the album as 5.1 Surround Sound & 24-bit high-resolution stereo. The album will also be available as a Gatefold 180g 2LP (available in black, sky blue, olive green and orange formats), Standard CD Jewelcase and Digital Album. The stunning artwork was created by the band’s longstanding collaborator Sarah Louise Ewing, with layouts by Steve Vantsis.

Train is an American pop rock band from San Francisco which was formed in 1993. Since 2021, the band consists of Pat Monahan (lead vocals), Taylor Locke (guitar, vocals), Hector Maldonado (bass, vocals), Jerry Becker (keyboards, guitar), Matt Musty (drums), Sakai Smith (backup vocals), and Nikita Houston (backup vocals).

Train's 2001 album, Drops of Jupiter, contained the lead single by the same name. The single won two Grammy Awards in 2002, and the album was certified double platinum.

Paul McCartney 2024 UK tour dates, and how to get tickets

Sir Paul McCartney has announced his first UK shows since headlining Glastonbury in 2022.

The Beatles star, 81, will bring his Got Back tour to London and Manchester in December 2024.

“I’m excited to be ending my year and 2024 tour dates in the UK,” he said.

“It’s always such a special feeling to play shows on our home soil.

Sir Paul launched his Got Back tour in 2022, completing 16 shows across the US before his Glastonbury appearance.

The show includes music from throughout his career, including songs from the Beatles and Wings eras as well as his solo material.

i ’s culture editor, Sarah Carson, described the show as “a masterclass from the greatest living cultural figure in this country’s history”.

Featuring Paul’s longtime band – Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboard, Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) – and the Hot City Horns, the tour promises state-of-the-art audio and video technology.

How Paul McCartney went from the least cool Beatle to musical icon

The tour dates mark his first live shows in the UK since his headlining set at Glastonbury in June 2022, where he became the festival’s oldest solo headliner.

That set featured surprise appearances from Bruce Springsteen and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl .

Sir Paul performed Beatles and Wings songs in a set lasting more than two hours, and was joined on stage by Springsteen for “Glory Days” and “I Wanna Be Your Man”.

His electrifying set was further amplified when he introduced Grohl to the stage to sing “I Saw Her Standing There” and “Band On The Run”.

When is Paul McCartney touring the UK?

Sir Paul will play Manchester’s Co-Op Live arena on December 14 and 15 and London’s O2 on December 18 and 19.

Sir Paul will also take his Got Back show to France and Spain, after previously announcing upcoming dates in Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru this October.

In 2023, he performed 18 shows throughout Australia, Mexico and Brazil.

Music fans have been sent into a frenzy after Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney announced he is to perform at four huge shows in the UK in 2024. He is taking his acclaimed Got Back tour across the world at the end of the year, and has now added gigs in Manchester and London.

Making the announcement on Monday he said: "I'm excited to be ending my year and 2024 tour dates in the UK. It's always such a special feeling to play shows on our home soil.

He added: "It's going to be an amazing end to the year. Let's get set to party. I can't wait to see you.”

The four gigs announced today will mark Paul’s first UK shows since his iconic Glastonbury headlining performance in 2022.

He will play Manchester's Co-op Live on Saturday December 14 and Sunday December 15, before heading to London's O2 Arena to play on Wednesday December 18 and Thursday December 19. Tickets go on sale on Friday, June 21.

He is known for his epic live shows, with songs like Hey Jude, Live and Let Die, Band on the Run, Let It Be to call on from his solo, Wings and Beatles back catalogues.

Pauls' Glastonbury gigs were hailed as “one of the greatest gigs of all time” by The Times and “a masterclass from the greatest living cultural figure in this country’s history” by The i, it was also Paul and his band’s 500th show together.

Paul’s last show in London was in 2018 at The O2 and his last Manchester show was in 2011 at the then MEN Arena. These UK shows will round off the Got Back tour 2024 dates.

Last week Paul, 81, announced his first 2024 live dates and that he’ll be taking his tour to Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru this October, and has also just announced shows in France and Spain.

There's set to be a huge clamour for tickets when they go on sale this week, with a pre-sale set to start on Wednesday, and general on sale on Friday, June 21. Here's all the details.

Train companies accused of ‘hiding secret tickets’ that could save you money

Passengers are missing out on ‘more than 25’ cheaper fare deals that are not available through third-party sellers, a survey claims

Train companies have been accused of hiding “secret” rail tickets that could save cost-conscious passengers money.

More than half of rail passengers have no idea that train operators can restrict certain fares, leaving them paying more than they need to for some train journeys .

Virgin Trains Ticketing said that a survey of rail travellers showed that many simply did not understand the complexity of Britain’s train ticketing system , which has more than 55 million individual fares available.

Together with the Independent Rail Retailers (IRR) trade association, the company claimed that more than 25 ticket types are not available for passengers to buy except through train companies themselves.

Consumers trying to shop around are left in the dark by this practice, they say - and are potentially overpaying when cheaper ticket options they do not know about are available.

The news comes after the number of season ticket sales dropped to historic lows in the first part of this year, suggesting British travellers are turning their backs on the railways as a cost-effective way of getting around the country.

With Louise Haigh, the shadow transport secretary, promising to simplify train fares if the Labour Party wins July’s general election, the £10 billion ticketing market is poised for a radical shake-up.

Mark Plowright, director of Virgin Trains Ticketing, said: “There are more than 25 fare types not available for retailers to sell – which accounts for millions of tickets.

“It’s confusing for passengers, who then feel there are ‘secret’ fares they don’t know about or are not able to access easily.

“Consumers are left searching for the best value fare. No wonder they have lost trust in the system.”

One-third discount

A list compiled by the IRR and seen by The Telegraph shows that some ticket types are restricted to certain outlets only.

For example, the Groupsave promotion offered by 14 train companies including the operators of the Gatwick Express, Stansted Express, Thameslink and GWR, lets groups of between three and nine adults claim a one-third discount on their fares.

No travel card or other subscription is needed to claim the discount - but the lower-price tickets can only be bought directly from the train companies themselves, not from third parties.

Similarly, some train operators offer “own brand only” discounts to students, groups of young people and teachers.

Restricted ticket availability is a sore issue for the likes of Virgin Trains Ticketing because their business model relies on taking five per cent commission from each fare that they sell.

Train companies have an incentive to sell direct to travellers because then they can pocket the entire fare, instead of paying a portion of the ticket price to another company.

Although train ticket sellers say restricting tickets in this way is unfair, passenger rail industry sources point out that the vast majority of their fares are set centrally by the Department for Transport.

Train operators say this means they themselves do not control the price of their own product, leaving them looking for alternative ways of increasing their revenues to balance the books.

£4 billion in subsidies

Last year the Government handed just over £4 billion in subsidies to the UK’s 20 passenger train operators, with the entire rail industry absorbing £12 billion in public money.

Labour has pledged to nationalise passenger train companies if it wins the upcoming general election, as well as reviewing the number and type of tickets available.

The Conservatives have said they will keep the private sector involved in running trains, on the grounds that privatising the railways led to a massive surge in passenger numbers over the last 20 years.

A spokesman for the Rail Delivery Group, the trade body for train operators, said: “Any customer no matter where they are can buy every ticket type on sale for use across the railway. 

“A small number of ticket types are only on sale direct from a train company and in some cases, it may be cheaper to buy from them direct. 

“We want to make things as simple as possible for our customers and have long called for the reform of ticketing and fares.

“Changes like the rollout of tap-in tap-out and digital ticketing are two examples of how we are making that happen. We welcome the innovation, choice, and competition that third-party retailers have brought for our customers.”

The star, who recently released her first studio album in six years ‘9 Sad Symphonies’ , is set to hit the road for a series of shows kicking off at Glasgow’s Oran Mor on November 21, with further shows in Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, London and Brighton.

The UK run will include two shows at the capital’s KOKO venue on November 28 and the O2 Forum Kentish Town on April 9, 2025. You can purchase tickets here from 10am BST on Wednesday (June 26).

A pre-sale is also running from today (June 24) until Wednesday which you can purchase tickets for here .

From there she will head to the Netherlands on December 5, 2024 before wrapping up her dates at the Dublin Academy on December 18.

Nash has also worked as an actor in recent years, starring in the  Netflix  series  GLOW as Rhonda ‘Britannica’ Richardson, and appeared in various other titles.
