Saudi Arabia

If there is a final frontier of tourism left, it's Saudi Arabia. The birthplace and spiritual home of Islam, Saudi Arabia is rich in attractions and stirring symbolism. For Muslims, the cities of Mecca and Medina, rich in Prophetic significance, have no equal, while the carved temples of Madain Saleh, known as the second Petra, and the sophisticated rock art at Jubbah are the Kingdom's greatest pre-Islamic treasures.

The Top Things to Do in Saudi Arabia

Abdullah Al-Eisa / Getty Images

During a recent interview with CNN, Saudi Arabia's Prince Sultan bin Salman announced that the Kingdom would begin issuing tourist visas in 2018, among other reasons to reduce the dependence of the Saudi economy on oil. Although Saudi authorities had previously spoken about possibilities for non-Muslim tourism in country (namely, a "special tourist zone" on the Red Sea), this announcement reflected an opening of the country at large to foreign travelers.

Now that tourist travel is allowed to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia it's time to start planning your trip. Below, you'll find a list of Saudi Arabia's most amazing tourist attractions.

shaifulzamri.com / Getty Images

The birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, Mecca has long been a popular destination for Muslim tourists . In fact, every Muslim who has the financial means to do so is required to make a pilgrimage to Mecca ( known as the "Hajj" ) once in his or her lifetime, according to the Quran.

Non-Muslims are prohibited from entering city of Mecca as well as the area around the iconic Kaaba stone.

Riyadh's Kingdom Centre Tower

Abdullah Al-Eisa / Getty Images

Kingdom Centre is such an iconic symbol of Saudi Arabia's capital that an emoji version of it shows up when you say you're "Traveling to" Riyadh on Facebook. A shopping mall and residential complex that's also home to an observatory (which is not surprising, since it rises 992 feet above the ground), Kingdom Centre is actually only the third-tallest building in Saudi Arabia, in spite of its fame.

Certainly, it will be a great place to begin any Riyadh city trip once Saudi Arabia opens up to tourists, offering visitors both figurative and literal perspective on the bustling national capital of 5.2 million people, which is also home to the Kingdom's main airport. It's easy to see the observation deck becoming Saudi Arabia's most popular selfie spot!

Empty Quarter

Buena Vista Images / Getty Images

Although the vast majority of the aptly-named "Empty Quarter" technically belongs to Saudi Arabia, there are no borders here—it's just sand, after all, with nothing different about it between Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. On the other hand, the Empty Quarter (which is known in Arabic as Rub' al Khali) is far from boring, whether you come on a camel safari, to drive 4x4s through the dunes or to visit with the nomadic tribes who call this seemingly inhospitable place home.

A number of places in Saudi Arabia are accessible to independent travelers once visas start being issued, but this is probably a destination for which you'll want to have a guide. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to find your way out of sand dunes alone? To say nothing of all the rodents and scorpions who call this area home—it's best to set up camp according to the recommendations of someone who knows the lay of the land!

Coral Houses of Jeddah

Jpatokal / Wikimedia Commons /  CC BY-SA 4.0

The Red Sea port of Jeddah is known as a relatively liberal and open city; from lax enforcement of the country's strict rules about female attire, to the generally laid back attitude of the people. In addition to a great vibe, Jeddah offers one awesome tourist attraction in particular: The so-called "Coral Houses," built out of blocks of coral harvested from the sea.

They're currently in a state of disrepair (almost notoriously), but are still a worthwhile destination.

Lost City of Mada'in Saleh

Sammy Six / Wikimedia Commons /  CC BY 2.0

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of decades, you've heard of the Lost City of Petra (which is no longer "lost" at all) in Jordan. What you might not realize is that Saudi Arabia is home to a city that's both similar in design and origin, dating back to the Nabatean Kingdom of the 1st century.

Although many Saudis enjoy visiting Madai'in Saleh, it maintains a low profile among foreigners, which means that you should be able to enjoy a trip here in relative peace. Certainly, it will take a long time before Mada'in Saleh reaches the "tourist trap" status of Petra, if that ever happens at all.

Prophet's Mosque in Medina

Rashidan Ab.Latif / Getty Images

Mecca is the highest-profile holy place in Saudi Arabia, but if you read Islamic history, you'll realize that Medina is also quite important—the Prophet Muhammad taught here for a number of years after he came of age in Mecca, and before he returned to the city in his later life. The most stunning site in Medina is the mosque of Al-Masjid an-Nabawī, whose origins date back to the year 622.

As is the case with Mecca, non-Muslims are currently prohibited from setting foot in central Medina.

Red Sea Scuba Diving

 Abdullah Al-Eisa / Getty Images

It's tempting to think of Saudi Arabia as a land of nothing but desert, but the country has incredibly long coastlines on both the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. In the case of the latter, this means that Saudi Arabia is home to some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the world. This is not a surprise if you've ever visited Egypt's Sinai peninsula, which is also located on the Red Sea.

A bonus of scuba diving in Saudi Arabia, famous sites of which include Allah's Reef and Boiler Wreck, is that you won't have to put up with the huge crowds you see in Egypt. In fact, it's unlikely you'll encounter any crowds at all, since scuba diving is relatively unpopular among Saudis.

Saudi Arabia targets $1.7 trillion in tourism infrastructure by 2030

State-owned energy giant Saudi Aramco has plans to launch 99 projects over the next few years

Saudi Arabia targets $1.7 trillion in tourism infrastructure by 2030

Saudi Arabia’s construction sector is set for significant growth, driven primarily by substantial oil and gas investment. A new report by Research and Markets projects a 5.1% annual growth rate between 2025 and 2028.

State-owned energy giant Saudi Aramco plans to launch 99 projects to increase oil production, enhance processing capabilities, and modernize facilities in the coming years.

These initiatives encompass 58 oil, gas, and petrochemical ventures, 22 pipeline and distribution projects, and 19 civil and marine infrastructure developments. Valued in the billions, notable projects include the Marjan field gas lift program, Shaybah dry gas handling, and upgrades to key refineries.

Among the largest investments are three new liquids-to-chemicals (LTC) complexes at the Yasref, Samref, and Sasref refineries. According to the report, the Saudi construction sector is expected to attain a real growth rate of 4.6% in 2024, supported by investments in energy, tourism, and industrial projects.

Official data indicates that as of June 2024, the kingdom has 255 tourism infrastructure projects valued at $1.7 trillion, aligning with its Vision 2030 goal to attract 150 million visitors annually.

In support of small businesses, the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) reported an 18.6% year-on-year increase in credit facilities to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in 2023, following a 13.6% rise in 2022.

The government is also advancing its National Investment Strategy (NIS), which aims to improve the investment environment and increase net foreign direct investment (FDI) to support its objective of raising the number of industrial establishments from 8,800 in 2019 to 36,000 by 2035.

Saudi arabia leads g20 countries in tourism growth, according to latest un tourism barometer.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, September 23, 2024 --( BUSINESS WIRE )--Saudi Arabia has emerged as the fastest-growing G20 country in the latest UN World Tourism Barometer report, marking a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s rapid ascent as a global tourism destination. The Barometer highlights a 73% increase in international tourist arrivals to Saudi Arabia in the first seven months of 2024, compared to the same period in 2019, reflecting the success of the Kingdom’s ambitious tourism strategy under Vision 2030.

The UN World Tourism Barometer serves as a global benchmark for measuring tourism sector performance, and its latest report underscores Saudi Arabia’s impressive achievements in both visitor numbers and economic impact. Saudi Arabia’s robust visa facilitation program, including the expansion of its e-visa scheme, has attracted millions of international tourists, further enhancing the Kingdom’s connectivity with the world.

Saudi Arabia’s investment in transformative projects, such as, the Red Sea Project, NEOM and Diriyah, has propelled its tourism growth. The UN World Tourism Barometer underscores the success of these giga-projects, which are reshaping the global tourism landscape and cementing Saudi Arabia’s reputation as a destination of choice for travelers seeking world-class experiences. Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s long-term economic diversification plan, has placed tourism at the center of its strategy, with the Kingdom welcoming 109 million tourists in 2023, setting the stage for achieving its long-term goal of 150 million annual visitors by 2030. Tourism will also represent 10% of the Kingdom’s GDP, with one million new jobs created in the sector, taking the total workforce to 1.6 million.

The UN report highlights Saudi Arabia’s role in driving international tourism recovery following the pandemic through collaboration between governments, the private sector, and global investors. The Kingdom’s focus on sustainable tourism, responsible development, and regional connectivity has attracted recognition from key global tourism bodies, including the UN Tourism and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Saudi Arabia’s leadership extends beyond tourism numbers, with initiatives aimed at promoting inclusive growth, job creation, and environmental stewardship.

With sustainability at the forefront of its tourism strategy, Saudi Arabia is prioritizing responsible development, preserving its natural and cultural heritage while meeting the needs of its growing tourism sector. The Ministry of Tourism continues to work closely with international organizations and stakeholders to ensure that tourism growth aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), fostering a tourism industry that benefits both local communities and visitors. These partnerships, alongside the Kingdom’s focus on sustainable and inclusive tourism, have bolstered its reputation as a key player in the global tourism sector.

Saudi Arabia’s success story is a model for other destinations looking to boost their own tourism. The Kingdom’s initiatives, comprising innovation, sustainability, and large-scale tourism infrastructure development are proving that a combination of visionary planning, strategic investment, inclusive policies, and global collaboration can drive growth even in a competitive international landscape.

About Saudi Ministry of Tourism (MT)

Founded in 2000, MT is dedicated to championing long-term growth in the Kingdom's tourism industry. Its primary ambition is to realize the Kingdom's vision for tourism by creating opportunities and platforms that enrich the tourism experience and promote the development of national human capital. By closely collaborating with government entities, industry stakeholders, and both public and private sectors, MT strives to drive sustainable tourism growth, enabled by forward-thinking policies, targeted investments, and talent development initiatives. MT strategy is deeply rooted in Arabian authenticity, powered by data and integrated delivery systems. At its heart, MT mission is to open Saudi Arabia's doors to the world, making it a hub where unforgettable tourism stories come to life daily.

  • The surge in tourism can be attributed to Qatar's strategic investments in luxury offerings, and a visa-free entry policy for citizens of 102 countries
  • Qatar has effectively leveraged high-profile events like the FIFA World Cup to enhance its global tourism profile, alongside significant infrastructure development

Doha, Qatar – Qatar has emerged as the leading player in the Middle East tourism sector, boasting an impressive 147% increase in tourist arrivals during the first half of 2024 compared to pre-pandemic levels, as reported by UN Tourism. This growth positions Qatar ahead of its regional competitors, with Saudi Arabia experiencing a 73% increase and the UAE’s Dubai seeing an 11.4% rise in international visitors during the same period.

The surge in tourism can be attributed to Qatar’s strategic investments in luxury offerings, a visa-free entry policy for citizens of 102 countries, and the implementation of its National Tourism Strategy 2030. The government aims to attract 6 million international visitors annually by 2030, underscoring tourism’s critical role in the nation’s economic diversification efforts.

Qatar has effectively leveraged high-profile events like the FIFA World Cup to enhance its global tourism profile, alongside significant infrastructure development, including new airports and transportation systems. Hamad International Airport (DOH) serves as the primary hub, connecting travelers to 116 destinations worldwide.

Strategic partnerships and marketing campaigns, such as ‘Double the Discovery’ with Saudi Arabia, further encourage travel between countries. Qatar also continues to host a variety of cultural and sporting events to keep tourism thriving year-round.

The economic impact of Qatar’s tourism sector is substantial, contributing approximately QAR 81.2 billion to the GDP in 2023 and supporting around 286,000 jobs. Visitor spending reached QAR 60.4 billion last year, with expectations for further growth in 2024.

With ambitious goals and continued investment in hospitality and tourism infrastructure, Qatar is solidifying its position as a premier global destination, setting the stage for sustained growth in the years to come.

Saudi Arabia tops G20 in international tourism growth for 2024

Kingdom sees 73 per cent increase in international tourist arrivals

STOCK SAUDI TOURISM / TOURISTS

Dubai: Saudi Arabia has recorded the highest growth in international tourism among G20 countries during the first seven months of 2024, according to the latest data from the United Nations Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The Kingdom saw an impressive 73 per cent increase in international tourist arrivals and a remarkable 207 per cent growth in international tourism revenues compared to the same period in 2019, as highlighted in the UNWTO’s September 2024 World Tourism Barometer report.

During this period, Saudi Arabia welcomed approximately 17.5 million international tourists, showcasing the Kingdom’s rapidly growing appeal on the global tourism stage.

In 2023, Saudi Arabia had 27.4 million visitors, a 56 per cent increase compared to 2019, positioning the Kingdom as the top country for tourism growth among major global destinations.

In addition to the influx of tourists, Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector posted a record-breaking SR48 billion travel item surplus in 2023, marking a 38 per cent year-on-year increase.

The sector’s robust performance aligns with the Kingdom’s broader economic diversification goals under Saudi Vision 2030.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its 2024 Article IV Consultation report, commended Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector for its significant role in diversifying the economy, particularly within the services sector.

The IMF noted that tourism has become a key driver of economic growth in the Kingdom, contributing to increased visitor numbers, higher spending, job creation, and a growing GDP share.
