Islands To Visit in Lakshadweep

Agatti island.

Agatti Island will be your first stop as you land at Lakshadweep . The island boasts of having some of the finest beaches and offers tons of water sports activities.  The beaches are clean and the water is deep blue teeming with the most colorful and diverse underwater world.

Where To Stay:

Local guesthouses and a few private-run resorts are the only options.

Do check the latest update on the official tourism site.

Agatti Island

Bangaram Island

Surrounded by a shallow lagoon this island is one of the most beautiful islands of Lakshadweep. It boasts world-class corals and rich marine life. From shipwreck snorkeling sites to hidden beaches with hermit crabs, the bluest of the blue ocean to a lagoon full of sea turtles, Bangaram fits the bill perfectly for a perfect beach experience.

Where To Stay:

The only option is to stay at the Bangaram Island resort which is run by SPORTS ( Lakshadweep Tourism ).

Travel Time

  •  From Agatti: 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the boat.

Bangaram Island

Pareli 1 & 2

These tiny islands surrounded by the shallow lagoon on one side and the deep sea on the other can be covered by foot in 15-30 minutes. The shallow lagoon is home to numerous sea turtles whereas the deep sea is home to sharks and stingrays.

The island is full of ( hungry 😉 ) hermit crabs, and sea turtles.

No options. These islands can be visited as day trips from Bangaram, Agatti or Thinnakara

  • From Agatti: 30 -75 min depending on the boat
  • From Bangaram: 20-40 min depending on the boat
  • From Thinnakara: 15 min

Lakshadweep Itinerary

A bite-sized island midst a shallow lagoon makes Thinnakara an ideal place for vacation. It is isolated and just a few cottages are dotted on the shores. It is a perfect escape for those who want to be away from the rush of life. You can snorkel, sail out in your kayak, play beach volleyball, and relax in a hammock doing nothing.

Even at times, it might happen you are the only one with the resort staff on the island.

Cottages on the Island

  • From Agatti: 20-40 min depending on the boat.

Thinnakara

Kadamat Island

Kadmat is one of the most stunning islands in the archipelago. You will find dolphins cleaving through the clear blue waters, sea turtles all around might come to greet you on your way to Kadmat from Agatti.

The phenomenal sweep of talcum-powder sand with dramatic waves breaking across the bay is an everyday thing here. Apart from the scenic vista, the island also offers various water sports activities like diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and paragliding to name a few. Some of the best diving spots can be found here.

Kadmat Island Resort – You have an option of NonAC tents and AC rooms to choose from. However, the Non-AC tents are a little far from the main resort.

Kadamt

Minicoy Island

Minicoy Island is a beautiful coral island dotted in the Arabian Sea full of dense coconut groves, a long stretch of white powdery beaches, and an amazing marine world. The island is distinct from the rest of the islands in terms of culture, lifestyle, and language. You can find a lot of influence from Maldivian and South Indian culture on this island.

There are three tourist cottages and one 20-bed tourist home.

Minicoy Island

Kalpeni Island

Kalpeni is famed for its bewitching landscape with the small islets Tilakkam & Pitti and an uninhabited island on the north called Cheriyam. You can walk to Cheriyam island from Kalpeni during low tides but make sure you are not barefoot.

The islands of Kalpeni were reshaped because of a huge storm in the 1800s and the formation of the beautiful corals is attributed to this storm. It has the largest lagoons among all the islands of Lakshadweep. These lagoons are quite shallow and are perfect for all sorts of water sports activities. You can also explore the Sait Moinuddin mosque while on the island.

Koomel Beach Resort is the only resort for tourists and it is run by SPORTS (Lakshadweep Tourism).

Kalpeni

Kavaratti Island

It is the capital of Lakshadweep and the most developed of all the islands. Apart from sun-drenched white sandy beaches, and amazing coral reefs, you can also explore the aquarium and museum on the island.

Ujra Mosque constructed by Sheikh Mohammad Kasim in the 17th century is one of the most prominent attractions on the island and draws a lot of tourists. The island also offers a plethora of water sports activities like kayaking, snorkeling, parasailing, and scuba diving at a very reasonable rate.

I am planning a trip to lakshdweep in january, I will be alone and do not want to spend much on stay. Please suggest whether i can get some cheap stay after reaching there, or prebooking/e-booking is required? Please note I am a solo traveller and I generally focus on sightseeing and local cuisines and culture. I can manage with some cheap accomodation.

December 9, 2016 at 7:12 pm

Hi Prashant, you need a permit to travel to Lakshadweep. This permit is arranged by SPORTS or any other travel agent which takes care of your lodging (the details of travel agents are on the SPORTS Lakshadweep website). We would highly recommend a pre-booking. For more details, you can check the website of SPORTS Lakshadweep.

I want to plan my own trip and not go for any package. Will Sports help me get permit if I only book my lodgings through them?

Awesome post! It’s so confusing the information on google about these islands! Just wondering – is Minicoy an inhabited island? Just because you mention that there are 3 guest houses owned by locals there. Also if we were to book a few days through SPORT and stay at their accomodation, could we extend our stay and stay at local accomodation somewhere? Do we need to apply to SPORTs to be able to stay in local accomodation? I just assume local places would be cheaper?

History of Lakshadweep

A Greek sailor first discovered the present-day Lakshadweep in the 1st Century CE. It was regarded as a source of tortoise shells back then. In the 7th Century, the continuous contact of the Arab traders and the Muslim missionary activities led to the conversion of fellow islanders into Islam.

A few years before 1100, a small Hindu Kingdom on the Malabar shore took over the island. Another small Hindu dynasty came into play after the fall of the Kulashekhara Dynasty of Kerala in 1102, passed to the Kolathiris.

Around the 12th Century, the marriage of a Kolathiri Princess and a Muslim convent established a separate Kingdom in Kannur(Cannanore) in Kerala. The kings and queens continued ruling the island. Tippu Sultan gained control of the northern group of islands called the Amindivis in the 1780s. When Tippu Sultan died in a battle with the British in 1799, the British took over the Amindivis.

The income from the other island remained in the hands of Bibi and her husband as long as they agreed to make an annual payment to the British. Due to the continuous failure of the payments, the Bibi was forced to give up the administration at the hands of the British. India gained control of these islands in 1947, during independence. In 1956, the islands were constituted into a Union Territory.

BEFORE YOU BOARD, KNOW THIS

📍Location: Nestled in the emerald Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep islands fall under the jurisdiction of the Kerela state and for the purpose of tourism, Kochi is the gateway into the archipelago. With 36 islands that span over an area of 32 sq. km, it remains the smallest Union Territory.  The accessible islands are Kavaratti, Agatti, Amini, Kadmat, Kiltan, Chetlat, Bitra, Andrott, Kalpeni, Bangaram and Minicoy (11/36). It is quite secluded- connectivity, network and lodgings are limited. Your reservations, a clear itinerary, and a good data pack can save you a lot of trouble.  First-time travelers can book a cruise or a travel package from their official site for a convenient stay.  You can even check out Explurger’s ‘Explore Your City’ feature to find out what travelers consider the best places to visit in Lakshadweep.

  📜Permits and Rules:

All tourists can only think of visiting this luscious getaway after securing a special permit from the government.  The time to process this ranges from 45 days to a couple months.  The archipelago is home to a vibrant but sensitive ecosystem which results in some strict laws, i.e., a ban on coral picking, narcotics, alcohol, public nudity, coconut plucking, etc. Tourists will be assisted by a representative of SPORTS (Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports). You are advised to clear your entire itinerary with the hotel staff before boarding for Kochi.

Land grab in the name eco tourism? Lakshadweep administration's moves stoke fear among islanders

They call the decision by the administration a 'foul move'

Nirmal Jovial

The Lakshadweep administration’s fresh moves in the name of “high eco tourism” projects are once again stoking fears among islanders. Recently, the administration released notifications, announcing the discontinuation of land acquisition proceedings on the entire Bangaram and Thinnakkara islands for tourism projects and associated infrastructure development. According to these notifications, the land earmarked for these projects falls under the classification of 'pandaram lands'. As per section 2(s) of the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Aminidivi Islands Land Revenue and Tenancy Regulation, 1965, the Union government has “proprietary rights” over 'pandaram lands'. The Islanders call this a foul move. Misbah A., a former member of the Union home ministry’s advisory committee for the archipelago, says the administration’s move aims to grab pandaram lands from the islanders without compensating them, and simply transfer the land they have held for centuries to Gujarati tourism and hospitality firm, Praveg. What is pandaram land? Early this year, THE WEEK spoke to several islanders about the issue of pandaram land. Back then, Misbah provided some historical context: “In Lakshadweep, 100 percent of the land is owned by islanders, except for those that the government has acquired by paying compensation. Pandaram land was created when the islands were under attack from Portuguese colonizers. The Arakkal [Cannanore] kingdom—to which the islands belonged—appropriated uninhabited land on the periphery of the islands to protect local residents. Later, under British rule, islanders were allowed to occupy pandaram land as cultivating tenants (cowleders).” On this land, people were not only allowed to farm but also to build houses. Many did so, given the rise in population over the years. Pandaram land on uninhabited islands has been farmed seasonally for more than a century. Approximately 49.5 percent of the total land holdings of islanders (in Minicoy, Kalpeni, Andrott, Kavaratti, and Agatti, and the attached uninhabited islands) are pandaram land. The regulation and the occupancy rights In 1965, the Union government introduced the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands Land Revenue and Tenancy Regulation, 1965. Section 83 of this regulation empowered the administrator to confer occupancy rights to the occupants of the pandaram land. Section 2 of the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Aminidivi Islands Land Revenue and Tenancy Regulation, 1965, defines “cowleder” as a person who has been or is granted a lease of pandaram land on rent for a specific period, one of the conditions of such lease being that he makes improvements thereto. According to the recent government notifications, “cowleders are mere leaseholders of pandaram land until and unless occupancy rights have been conferred upon them” under the 1965 regulation.

Notably, much of the pandaram land held by the islanders was not regularized according to the 1965 regulation due to red tapism and other issues. However, the islanders note that traditionally, administrators in Lakshadweep have given compensation while acquiring pandaram land for developmental activities or the creation of public infrastructure. In 1971, H.S. Dubey, then deputy secretary to the Government of India, wrote a letter to the Lakshadweep administrator regarding the acquisition of land for government purposes. THE WEEK accessed the letter, which stated: “As regards pandaram land in the occupation of ex-cowleders (pandaram landholders) whose cowles have expired, but who have been conferred with occupancy rights under Section 83 of the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands Land Revenue and Tenancy Regulation, 1965, their rights as occupants would have to be recognized, and they would have to be paid compensation for the acquisition of their land under the Land Acquisition Act.” New administrator, new rules However, since Praful Khoda Patel, the first non-bureaucrat administrator in Lakshadweep’s history, assumed control in 2020, things have changed. In June 2023, a Kerala High Court single bench made an observation in a civil case stating that the administration possesses the proprietary right to pandaram land. The court outlined that those lacking occupancy rights were not entitled to the land’s value but only to the value of improvements (crops or buildings) they might have grown or built on the land. Since then, the administration has used this as a basis to initiate steps for land takeover. In October 2023, an amendment to the 1965 regulation was introduced, which removed a clause favoring pandaram landholders that a 2020 amendment had put in place. Misbah says the current notifications from the administration to stop all land acquisition measures are intended to establish that the land does not belong to the islanders but to the administration. Notably, Praveg, the firm that bagged the projects to establish high-eco tourism projects on multiple islands in Lakshadweep, has seen massive growth in its share prices over the last five years. From a trading price of just Rs 2.45 apiece five years ago, the stock has experienced a remarkable rise of 34,287.76 per cent to reach the current level of Rs 842.50. In March, when the firm received work orders from the Lakshadweep administration for the operation and maintenance of 150 tents at Bangaram Island and 200 tents at Thinnakara, its share prices jumped 10 per cent. Meanwhile, islanders like Misbah allege that the Lakshadweep administration is taking anti-islander steps at every juncture, pushing islanders into poverty and alienation, as the life and livelihood of a large section of islanders have been linked to these pandaram lands for many years. “The Constitution of India very specifically mentions that the President shall make regulations for the Good Administration of the area(UT). This being the object of the power granted to the President, how can any government officer appointed by the President or working on his behalf issue any order in contravention to the objective of the Constitution? IAS officers are expected to protect and safeguard the land, property and cultural heritage and interest of the ST. But with the alleged order they have used their power to take away land held by them for more than a hundred years and deny them not only agricultural income from 844600 sq.mtr but also at least Rs. 100 crore income per year from high-end tourism projects,” says Misbah. “The alleged order is against the decision taken under the LRT Regulation by the Administrator to award occupancy right in 2013 and by ministry of home and recommendations of the National Commission for ST and high power committee of NITI Ayog and Supreme Court Committee all in favour of Tribal natives of these islands. No officer under the administration has the power to ignore or close their eyes to the above approved policy guidelines and orders. Denial of land and income forever would have an everlasting economically damaging impact for us and our future generations."

Union govt to go all out to promote tourism in Lakshadweep islands

Lakshadweep islands

BENGALURU: Lakshadweep is fast becoming the next preferred destination for coastal, beach, and water sports tourism. To promote the islands, along with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and to give tough competition to other island countries like the Maldives, the Union Government is giving special attention to Lakshadweep.

The virgin beaches and lesser-known islands in Lakshadweep are becoming a star attraction. Scores of people are making inquiries and bookings for scuba diving in the blue waters of the Arabian Sea. “To draw tourists and ensure there is sufficient infrastructure, water and beach villas are being constructed. These are the first of its kind in India, and they are being done with the help of the Union Government,” said Imran Quraishi KK, Tourism Officer, Assistant Director, Department of Tourism, Lakshadweep.

He said the NITI Ayog has helped by giving special permissions and relaxations in the coastal regulation zone to set up tourism infrastructure and conducting surveys for undertaking the projects.

The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) is also working on the survey to set up beach and sea resorts, he added.

The Union Territory of Lakshadweep has 26 islands, of which 10 are inhabited. The economy of the island is dependent on tourism alone.

“It is off season in the islands during the southwest monsoon. Business for us is only from October to May. We are not just keen on promoting tourism and drawing tourists, but ensuring footfall is maintained and the economy is not effected,” he added.

“The pass or permits to enter the islands will continue. There will be no compromise on it. Each island has a fixed carrying capacity, and infrastructure is being enhanced based on that, which the survey will help with. We are working on promoting tented tourism in the inhabited islands,” Quraishi added.
