7:00pm Show Award-winning comedian and host of the Nateland podcast, Nate Bargatze “Be Funny” tour makes a stop at the historic Capitol Theatre, September 21, 2023 Hailing from Old Hickory, Tennessee, stand-up comedian Nate Bargatze is selling out shows across the world on his Raincheck Tour. In July 2020, the comedian teamed up with All Things Comedy to release his weekly podcast, Nateland. The world is a crazy place and there’s plenty of podcasts out there tackling the tough issues. However, Nateland will tackle the meaningless issues that we face day to day to give listeners a much-needed mental break from fighting the good fight. New episodes release Wednesdays, with video available on Nate’s YouTube channel and audio available everywhere you get podcasts. Nate followed in the showbiz footsteps of his dad, a former clown turned world class magician, who’s influence is seen on Nate’s 2015 debut special Full Time Magic and his debut album Yelled at By a Clown. Nate’s half-hour Netflix Special The Standups premiered on July 4th, 2017. In March 2019, Nate’s first solo one-hour Netflix special, The Tennessee Kid premiered globally with rave reviews, and recently released his highly anticipated 2nd special for the streaming platform, The Greatest Average American on March 18th, 2021. Bargatze’s comedy is both clean and relatable, evident in his ten appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He also appeared on Conan four times, was a recurring guest on @midnight, and had his own Comedy Central Presents in 2011. Off-screen, Nate was part of Jimmy Fallon’s Clean-Cut Comedy Tour, and has done live shows for the troops in Iraq and Kuwait five times. In addition to touring the country as a headliner, Nate toured in arenas with Chris Rock on his 2017 Total Blackout Tour. He regularly performs at Bonnaroo, SXSW, Oddball Comedy Festival, Sasquatch, Clusterfest, and the JFL Montreal Comedy Festival, where he’s received critical acclaim multiple years in a row. Nate was featured as one of Esquire’s “Best New Comedians” by Jim Gaffigan, one of Marc Maron’s “Comedians to Watch” in Rolling Stone, one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” for 2015, and as #1 on Vulture’s ‘50 Comedians You Should Know’ in 2015. His debut one-hour special, Full Time Magic, premiered on Comedy Central that spring, followed by his debut album, Yelled at by a Clown, which reached #1 on the iTunes Comedy Charts and remained on Billboard’s Top Ten Comedy Charts for weeks. Comedian Nate Bargatze on Breaking Arena Records, Going Viral From ‘SNL' & Staying Non-Political: ‘You Don't Need Me to Add to That'
When Nate Bargatze set the attendance record at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena last year, the comedian quickly figured out how to ensure his milestone stood: "I stole one of the chairs from Bridgestone," he told Jimmy Fallon. "I have the record, so if I take one of the chairs home, no one can break that record."
Bargatze need not have resorted to such measures, joking or not, as he is seeing an attendance surge that has him breaking records and filling arenas across the country on the Be Funny tour, which started in January 2023 and has sold more than 1 million tickets.
In Billboard 's Mid-Year Boxscore Report, Bargatze's outing ranked as the No. 1 comedy tour, ahead of those by fellow comics like Adam Sandler, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. For overall ticket sales, Bargatze came in at No. 12, narrowly behind such acts as P!nk , Coldplay, Madonna and U2. But he is likely taking home a much bigger percentage of the gross: Unlike music acts, who aim to net 30% of the gross, comedians in general have a much lower overhead and generally net between 50% and 60% of the gross, according to industry sources.
As impressive as the numbers are, even more staggering is the rapid growth Bargatze, 45, is experiencing more than 20 years into his stand-up career. His 2023 shows averaged a gross of $240,000 from 3,612 tickets sold per show, according to Billboard Boxscore. As he progressed from theaters to arenas, his 2024 shows have averaged $781,000 gross from 11,429 tickets per show.
Bargatze is still digesting the boost in his popularity, which he attributes to social media, word of mouth, his specials on streaming services - including "Hello World," which debuted last September on Amazon Prime Video - and, especially, hosting Saturday Night Live in October, which created "a giant, giant leap" in his career, he says. "It was my first kind of thing really on [a mainstream platform] and it just sent it to a completely new level." (Bargatze's "Washington's Dream" sketch was the second most watched SNL sketch of the season, with more than 9.4 million views, according to NBC .)
In an election year that feels increasingly mean and polarizing, Bargatze's humor is decidedly apolitical, clean and relatable. His storytelling, delivered in a low-key, deadpan manner, is observational. If there's a butt of the joke, it's usually him and his feigned cluelessness.
The response he gets from the people who come to see his family-friendly shows assures him he's on the right track. And for those times when he thinks "maybe I need to say something" or speak out on an issue, the appreciative feedback he gets from fans who feel uplifted by his gentle humor convince him he does not. "The world is serious. There's plenty of people and information. You can go get whatever you want to go get. You do not need me to also add to that," he says. "What I believe I need to do is be entertainment that you can go to as an entire family."
In fact, he says some of his favorite moments are when he looks out into the audience and sees multiple generations sitting together. "I love when I can see a family sitting there, and if I start talking about my age, I can see the whole family look at the dad or look at the mom," he says. "And when I talk about my parents, see them look at the grandparents. I love the connection that they're like, ‘That's you' or ‘That's me.' That's the best part."
Appealing to a multi-generational audience is one of Bargatze's greatest strengths, says Joe Schwartz , comedy touring agent at United Talent Agency, who has worked with the Brillstein Entertainment Partners-managed Bargatze for more than 10 years and handles his bookings with fellow UTA agent Nick Nuciforo. "The style of comedy that he's doing lends itself to being so broadly appealing," Schwartz says. "That gives him such a major advantage over a lot of the other stand-up comedians working today."
As Bargatze hit new tipping points - such as the Amazon special or hosting SNL - UTA planned accordingly when rolling out tour announcements, knowing the exposures would bump up demand for tickets. But the demand has exceeded even their initial expectations, with Bargatze often playing every day of the week but Tuesday, and sometimes playing more than one show a day on the weekend. "We were holding additional dates where necessary, making sure the show times were at the hours that we knew would be best for that multigenerational audience," Schwartz says. "We don't do 10:00 p.m. shows in these arenas. We do shows at 4:00 p.m. after he sells out the 7::00 p.m. because we found that his audience prefers that."
Even during the COVID shutdown, Bargatze built his audience, first through drive-in shows and then 2021's Netflix special, The Greatest Average American , which he taped outdoors (complete with the whirl of helicopters interrupting his set). He received his first Grammy nomination for the special's comedy album companion.
Through it all, Bargatze has stayed focused on his craft, making incremental gains, preparing for when his big shot came. "You never know when all the eyes are going to switch over to you," he says. "I've done this now for 21 years, so you just kind of keep doing what you're doing - and then when the eyes end up hitting you, you need to be ready," he says.
With an exhausting schedule, Bargatze also realized a number of years ago he needed to take better care of himself if he wanted to reach his goals. "I stopped drinking in 2018. I was starting to sell clubs out, and so we're about to go to theaters [and] I wasn't able to drink like a regular person." he recalls. "I knew, ‘Alright, well, if I want to go to the level I want to go to, I have to get this out of my life or I'm not going to be able to get to that level.' And I've seen that now, with even the training and the food."
Bargatze grew up in Nashville and honed his comedy skills living in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York before moving back to Tennessee several years ago.
The son of a clown-turned-magician, Bargatze absorbed show biz tactics, though he didn't realize it at the time. "My timing definitely comes from my dad," he says. "He was working on his magic all the time. Even at home, he was doing it. So, subconsciously, you're taking it in, like, ‘Well, if you want to be great at something, you have to do this all day long.'"
Though doing magic didn't appeal to him, stand up did. And once Bargatze began stand up, "I was pretty exposed to already be kind of obsessed with it," he says. "If you want to get to a high level, I mean, you have to be obsessed with it - you can't just kind of have your foot half in. The longer I do it, the more I realized how much it was good for me to see that through my father." His dad often opens Bargatze's shows and frequently travels with him on the road, as does his mom.
His singlemindedness has always been apparent, says Schwartz. "For as long as I've been working with Nate, he has been so driven and so singular in what he has wanted to do. He has just devoted all the time and effort to becoming a great stand-up comedian. He has truly mastered the craft."
In conversation with Bargatze that devotion to his technique is obvious. He intensely and thoroughly talks about the contrast between playing arenas on this tour, where he can draw out the jokes for his one-hour set, and then having to get back into the late-night television mindset to prep for Saturday Night Live by practicing in New York comedy clubs to come up with his tight, 8-minute opening monologue.
When Bargatze first began playing arenas several months ago, he utilized a traditional setup, with the stage at one end - but quickly changed to an in-the-round configuration to have a closer connection to the audience.
With the stage at one end, "the [audience] is so far away from you and it's very easy for them to feel disconnected. But the round really changed everything because I've cut the distance in half from the farthest person," he says. He also increased the size of the screens and put TVs on stage so even when his back is to people sitting in the front, they can see his face. "Comedy can work in arenas," he says. "Weirdly, it can even work better. In a 2000-seat theater, you can't see my face that great. But in an arena, I play to the cameras."
He also adjusts his cadence each night. "When you're doing the arena, it's like music. My timing is based off their laughter, and it changes according to where you're at. Every night, it's a little different," he says. But he also likes the challenge: "To keep 20,000 people's attention, I love it. I love how hard it can be. You're on kind of a tightrope. You've got to keep them intrigued the whole time. It's amazing."
The Be Funny tour ends Oct. 18. A streaming special filmed April 13-14 at Phoenix's Footprint Arena will premiere this fall, and a companion album will come out through Capitol Comedy. Bargatze is the first artist signed to the new comedy imprint started by Universal Music Group Nashville.
Bargatze will take several months off from the road while he works on developing other projects, though Schwartz promises he'll be back in 2025 with "the biggest, most impressive tour he's ever done."
Much of Bargatze's time off from touring will be spent building out The Nateland Company, the umbrella content company geared toward producing family-friendly entertainment that he launched in October. Already off the ground is The Showcase , a six-part YouTube series filmed at Zanies Comedy Club in Nashville featuring up-and-coming comics, as well as three full-length comedy specials directed by Bargatze. The Nateland Company also houses Bargatze's The Nateland Podcast , which is in its fourth year, and Bargatze has his eye on developing scripted tv and film projects.
Ultimately, Bargatze is aiming for a career and a production company that builds on his nice guy, everyman stand-up image, where fans know what to expect no matter how big his universe expands and what roles he may take on next.
"I tried to do auditions at the beginning and it's hard. I can [only really] be me. And so if you don't want this, then it's not going to completely work out," he says. "I see Adam Sandler and [Sandler's production company] Happy Madison … I love that, where Adam Sandler goes and he's him. You know what you're getting when you're in his world. He did Uncut Gems , and he can do all that other stuff and maybe there will be stuff like that down the line, but I gotta get some stuff on the board. The only thing I've really had is Saturday Night Live as a thing outside of stand-up comedy. So, there's a lot of things that I need to get on the board and get moving forward."
As he builds the Nateland empire, Bargatze feels confident that the audiences he plays before every night prove there is great demand for the kind of humor he and his fellow like-minded comics provide. The proof of concept is there in his hundreds of sold-out shows around the country. "This direction is working, so I want to keep going in this direction," he says. "I'm in every town in America, and I'm just telling you, it seems to be working."

‘SNL’: Comedian Nate Bargatze Has ‘More in Common With a Pilgrim’
By William Vaillancourt
William Vaillancourt
In his stand-up set on Saturday Night Live , comedian Nate Bargatze made clear that he doesn’t fit in with how some things are done in 2023.
“The world is so future now. And I feel in the way of it,” the Tennessee native said in his debut as SNL guest host. Hotels, he explained, are “futuristic.”
“I remember when you’d take a shower, the shower’s enclosed. But now a lot of hotels have half a glass, and water gets on the floor. And that’s the future,” he joked.
“In the future, the floors are always wet. Every floor,” he continued. “I’m 44. My daughter is 11. When she’s my age, it’ll be 2057. I don’t even believe that’s a real year! My movies didn’t go that high in fake years. How am I going to talk to someone from 2057? I have more in common with a pilgrim.”
“And I can tell I don’t know anything about history because every history movie I watch, I watch on the edge of my seat,” he joked. “I watched the movie Pearl Harbor , and I was as surprised as they were.”
Keeping with the theme, later in the show Bargatze would play George Washington telling his Revolutionary War soldiers what he envisions for the country they’re fighting to create.

SNL: The 40 Best Skits Of All Time, Ranked
Stephen king teases new dark tower stories as mike flanagan’s adaptation continues to develop, arcane's future beyond season 2 confirmed by co-creator despite impending series finale: "just the first one".
- Nate Bargatze's SNL episode had standout sketches, with "Washington's Dream" being a top favorite.
- Bargatze's clean stand-up comedy style resonates with audiences and brings hilarity to banal stories.
- The "Washington's Dream" sketch showcases Bargatze's perfect portrayal of a weird George Washington, earning viral success.
The Nate Bargatze SNL episode had some of the best sketches of the season, and the George Washington one may have reached the top of my personal rankings. Nate Bargatze is a longtime stand-up comedian who has only recently broken into stardom. The Nashville, Tennessee comic, who works clean, has been delighting audiences with his hilarious stories and bemused reactions, all told with a slight Southern lilt, that makes every word out of his mouth funny. Even the most banal story becomes a riot when Bargatze tells it.
I was a bit surprised that Bargatze was selected to host SNL season 49 , episode 3. Again, I like the guy, but it's not like he's a movie star. SNL has had plenty of stand-up comedians host, Pete Davidson hosted the season premiere , but usually, they're also big-name actors. I'm so glad they did invite Bargatze because his episode, from the monologue where he reminded the audience, "reading is the key to smart" to a skit where he profusely apologized to Kenan Thompson for making incredible soul food, was fantastic. And that's not even to mention "Washington's Dream".
Saturday Night Live has been on the air since 1975, with lots of iconic sketches over the decades. Here are some of the best SNL skits of all time.
Why The Nate Bartgatze "Washington's Dream" Sketch Is The Show's Best
Nate bargatze is the perfect weird george washington.
Written by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidel, "Washington's Dream" is one of the funniest SNL sketches I can remember in recent years. In the sketch, James Austin Johnson, Bowen Yang, Kenan Thompson, and Day are dressed as American Revolutionary troops. Nervous about their potential for success, George Washington shows up, played by a Nate Bargatze who looks like he has just woken up from a nap . Washington inspires his troops by reminding them what they are fighting for: freedom, specifically to use our own brand of weird unit measurements.
The musical guest for season 49, episode 3 was the Foo Fighters.
I'm a proud American. I root for the US in the Olympics and light legally purchased fireworks on the 4th of July. But never before have I felt so patriotic when it comes to our very odd and unintuitive units of measurement. Bargatze lists off nearly every scientific unit of measurement, with each one being more ridiculous than the last. None of the assembled soldiers can follow his train of thought and that's not even the best part of the skit.
Bargatze plays this weirdly fixated Washington perfectly and his pauses before admitting each unit of measurement make it seem like he knows how much of a bad idea it is, but he's plowing ahead anyway.
I laughed the hardest each time Kenan's character, a Black soldier, earnestly asked Washington what would happen to men of color after the war. " You asked about the temperature ," Washington replies after a blank pause. Bargatze plays this weirdly fixated Washington perfectly and his pauses before admitting each unit of measurement makes it seem like he knows how much of a bad idea they are, but he's plowing ahead anyway. I've been there. Seidell and Day spoke with IndieWire about the skit, saying,
"The sketch played well at the table read, strong enough to get into dress rehearsal. I don’t want to speak for Nate, but I think he felt like, 'This is kind of my humor. This is in my lane.' You could see 'weights and measures' being a standup bit of his. So he really wanted to do it... Nate’s a standup, he knows how to react to an audience. He knows when to pause for laughter. When we were rehearsing, he wasn’t taking those pauses, because it’s weird to take a pregnant pause and stare off and then deliver a line to no audience. His punchlines were coming right on the end of everyone’s setup lines. But once the dress crowd got in there and he heard the laughs, he played it perfectly."
Does he ever play it perfectly. I need Bargatze to resurrect Drunk History so I can see him as more oddball historical figures.
"Washington's Dream" Is The "David S. Pumpkins" Of The 2020s
Both snl sketches were written by the same writers.
"Washington's Dream" went super viral with 10.3 million views on YouTube as of July 2024. It had 4 million after only 12 days. Who knows? Maybe give it some time we'll see it reaching "David S. Pumpkins" numbers (25 million YouTube views as of July 2024). Both SNL sketches were written by Day and Seidell (and Bobby Moynihan for "Pumpkins") and had the same instant online popularity. Both also sketches feature a host in an unexpected role, as characters who are extremely odd and seem to be the only ones in on the joke.
Seidell compared the two,
"I think we had a similar thing with [2016’s] David S. Pumpkins. It came together perfectly at the time that it mattered. And then in seven years, we’re gonna do it again."
Come on guys, if Washington can believe in an America where a ton is 2000 pounds, but a word for 1000 pounds doesn't exist, you can believe in another winner sooner than seven years.

In an episode of Bargatze’s podcast Nateland , the comedian said he knew Mulaney when he was getting started in stand-up comedy and booking segments on late night TV in New York City. “I knew Mulaney, who I started with, John Mulaney kind of started at the same time,” Bargatze said, adding that he remembers that Mulaney “was an unbelievable comedian.”
Since those early days, Bargatze, 45, and Mulaney, 42, have both made their mark in the industry with their signature brands of comedy.
From 2008 to 2013, Mulaney was a writer for SNL , creating the legendary Stefon character on “Weekend Update” with Bill Hader . He’s returned to host SNL multiple times and became a member of the “Five-Timers Club” in 2022. Outside of SNL , Mulaney created and starred in The Oh, Hello Show on Broadway with Nick Kroll and has released multiple stand-up specials including New in Town , The Comeback Kid , Kid Gorgeous , and Baby J .

Known for his clean comedy, Bargatze’s career has earned the nickname of “The Nicest Man in Stand-Up.” After performing on late night talk shows, including The Tonight Show over 10 times, Bargatze has put out several stand-up specials, including one that earned him a Grammy nomination. After his 2015 special Full Time Magic , he went on to release The Tennessee Kid , The Greatest Average American , and Hello World . Bargatze also started a production company and wrote his first book, Big Dumb Eyes , which comes out in May 2025.
John Mulaney and Nate Bargatze have shared the comedy stage together
In May 2024, Mulaney invited Bargatze to appear on his live six-part special, Everybody's in LA . On Episode 3 (“Helicopters”), the two swapped jokes with fellow comedians Richard Kind, Patton Oswalt, and Earthquake as well as reporter Zoey Tur and prosecutor Marcia Clark. When Mulaney introduced Bargatze, he described him as one of his “favorite comics” and a good friend.

The two have collaborated behind-the-scenes, too. Before Bargatze hosted SNL for the first time in 2023, he said that Mulaney helped him prepare for the gig. “ I talked to John Mulaney, pretty quickly, right after we found out, and he really talked me through it all,” Bargatze told Entertainment Tonight , adding that Jerry Seinfeld, Pete Davidson, and Kumail Nanjani also shared advice with him. “They've been very nice and telling me what to do and helping me with the sketches, and where you look for the cue cards, all of that stuff.”

- A Saturday Night Live sketch parodies Hallmark movies by combining romance with a serial killer.
- The sketch follows a woman named Kelsey who falls in love with her hometown serial killer, despite knowing the truth, resulting in hilarious situations.
- While not the intended point of the sketch, it looks like the spoof could actually work as a movie, with the potential to appeal to Hallmark fans if it maintained the campy tone.
What's better than a romantic movie for the fall season? A romantic movie that includes a serial killer! Sort of! Saturday Night Live had comedian Nate Bargatze as host, and that came with some very odd but hilarious sketches, like a Hallmark movie set in a small town which sees a woman named Kelsey ( Chloe Fineman ) who returns to her hometown from New York and falls in love with her hometown serial killer (Bargatze). Because, of course Hallmark would make a love story for the Halloween season, right? The sketch capitalized on two things that women presumably really love: romance and scary true crime. So why not combine those two loves and mix them together?
In the sketch, after Kelsey returns home, she's almost killed by a man dressed like a scarecrow but she realizes that it is someone she went to school with. The two reconnect and while she knows that he is the town serial killer, that doesn't stop her from falling in love with him. Even though people in her life keep pointing out that it is actively insane of her to keep trying to date him while knowing he's a serial killer (mainly from comments made by Punkie Johnson ). The sketch visually looks like a perfect Hallmark trailer and even includes Mikey Day coming in from New York and revealing he is Kelsey's fiancé. This news hurts Bargatze's Scarescrow killer so much that almost doesn't want to kill Kelsey anymore. But all is well that ends well as the sketch ends with the two reconciling and Bargatze proposing with a severed hand with a ring on it.
It was such a good call out of the obsession many of us do have with murder as well as highlighting the Hallmark love story machine, with the sketch hitting all the right notes overall. The problem now is that this movie honestly looks like a pretty funny commentary on Hallmark as a whole, and it looks good to wish it were an actual movie.
Chloe Fineman & Nate Bargatze's Halloween Romance Looks Fascinating Though
Maybe not the point of the sketch but it does look like a movie that could actually work. Imagine, if you will, the amount of Hallmark fans that would flock to the opening of it. Especially if it was as campy as the Saturday Night Live sketch ended up. It was a delight watching Fineman trying her best to play that clueless girl who doesn't have a self-saving bone in her body. Especially when a serial killer is in her home and she's too busy reconnecting with an old flame . Check out the new sketch below:
