The Cruise Ship Interiors Awards were a much-needed breath of fresh air at the peak of a damning gruelling year for the cruise sector. Initially set to take place in Florida and later turned into a YouTube live event, the first edition of the awards was a welcome reminder of the industry’s achievements despite the misfortunes caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Having collected over 5,000 votes in 19 different categories ranging from best cabin, spa and outdoor design to furniture, art and lighting, the awards were a testament to cruise’s desire to get back on its feet.

Best Public Space: Carnival Cruise Lines’ Havana Bar and Pool Area

As announced during the event, Carnival Cruise Line’s Havana Bar and Pool Area bagged the Best Public Space award thanks to its “intriguing design” which used “postcards and original literature as well as staple colours and tiling to transport guests to a cocktail bar in Cuba in an instant”.

The area was created by Carnival’s in-house team and evokes the atmosphere of Cuban bars and restaurants with artwork depicting famous landmarks, traditional cocktails and live Latin music. There is also space for outdoor seating where guests can enjoy panoramic poolside views. Around the area are also tropics-inspired staterooms and suites decorated with open-air patios, swing chairs and rainforest showers.

Best Restaurant Design: De Jorio Design International’s Champagne Bar

Italian cruise, yacht and concept design firm Studio De Jorio International received the Best Restaurant Design award for the mesmerising Champagne Bar onboard MSC Cruises’ MSC Seaside. Sitting at the heart of the ship and linked to other decks via a lavish Swarovski staircase, the bar aims to recreate that ‘champagne mood’ typical of stress-free holidays.

The area features a long and curved bar counter, crush tables with stools and a sitting area with armchairs and sofas that offer panoramic views of the ocean. All elements have a colour palette, texture and design that evoke the elegance of a glass of champagne.

“Glamour, bubbles and ice, as well as food like oysters, caviar, canapes and appetisers, are the usual images that come up to our minds when we think of champagne,” the designers wrote in their pitch for the award. “To recreate such images, we chose an abstract and contemporary design to help us give the idea of an irregular and cold matter like ice, smooth and sinuous as a whole, sharp and jagged when it is broken into pieces.”

Best Art: Volume Creative’s ‘Washed Up’

Washed Up is the 3D nautical artwork that won the awards’ Best Art category. Credit: Volume Creative / Phil Hardman.

London-based design studio Volume Creative is the mind behind Washed Up, the 3D nautical artwork that won the awards’ Best Art category. Welcoming guests at each stair lobby of Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady, the artwork uses natural objects found washed up from the ocean to give clues about the passenger’s location.

“One lift core frame is created from natural objects like corals and shells found washed up on beaches whereas the other focuses on man-made items found at the shoreline,” the company’s pitch reads . “Objects were carved out of clay to create a fibreglass mould, before being fixed onto a geometric framework.”

Best Innovation: Interior Proman’s Limartec Wood Veneer Systems

The Best Innovation prize was awarded to Interior Proman’s Limartec wood veneer systems. Credit: Interior Proman.

In one of the most anticipated categories at the event, the Best Innovation prize was awarded to Interior Proman’s Limartec wood veneer systems for providing “an alternative to plastic laminate and a safer, more versatile design that even has noise-cancelling qualities”.

The system is the first semi-finished product on the market to meet the International Maritime Organization’s FTP Code 2010, which brought new requirements to the testing procedures for decorative panels on walls and ceilings with real wood veneer and lacquered surfaces.

Halogen-free and made of sustainable material – real wood veneer – the product is sound – absorbing and stays below the safety limits for combustible materials, making cruise interiors safer.

Best Sustainable Product: Magicman’s sustainable repairs

The Best Sustainable Product award was given to Magicman. Credit: Magicman.

An increasingly critical award for an industry that has a lot to prove when it comes to the environment, the Best Sustainable Product award was given to Magicman, an over 25-year-old restoration service based in Brighton, England.

The company is long established in the marine industry for repairing damaged items and rejuvenating them with new colours and finishes, creating savings on new materials and shipping costs. Having recently expanded to North America, Magicman’s 2019 portfolio includes 113 marine projects for the likes of Holland America Line, Carnival’s AIDAvita and Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas.

Among the reasons behind this accolade is Magicman’s current push for operators to consider the environmental benefits of maintaining their vessels while in service. The company recently sent a team of technicians to help with repair works onboard Viking’s Viking Sky; the crew boarded the ship while it was docked in one port and then got off, having completed restoration, at the next departure harbour.

Best Newbuild: Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady

Sir Richard Branson’s Scarlet Lady secured the best newbuild prize. Credit: Virgin Voyages.

Sir Richard Branson’s brand-new Scarlet Lady secured one of the most coveted prizes of the night, the best newbuild. In the words of the award announcer, Trimline co-chairman Mike Oliver, this was received for creating a “boutique hotel vibe at sea, whilst not compromising on scale”. He added that its “design, style and function have made cruising interactive for a whole new generation”.

Launched at the dawn of the coronavirus pandemic, the new ship was long anticipated for bringing a fresh new approach to cruising that appeals to younger generations. Among its most attention-grabbing features are nightclub space The Manor, an outdoor running track and onboard wellness programme called Vitamin Sea, and a ship-wide plastic ban.

Cruise Ship Interiors Awards presented at CSIE Europe

A total of 11 awards were presented to companies, teams and individuals in the industry

Cruise Ship Interiors Awards presented at CSIE Europe

By Alex Smith | 08 December 2021

The Cruise Ship Interiors Awards, supported by marine lighting provider and global headline sponsor Kalmar, took place at Cruise Ship Interiors Expo Europe on 2 December at ExCeL London.

A total of 11 awards were presented to members of the cruise interiors community to recognise their efforts over the past year. A judging panel of industry experts which included Jon Ingleton, executive editor of Cruise & Ferry Interiors and Cruise & Ferry Review, hand-picked the successful finalists.

Among the awards given at the ceremony was Supplier of the Year, sponsored by Cruise & Ferry Interiors, which was presented to British textile merchant Agua Fabrics. The company was recognised for its customer service and ability to quickly source suitable alternatives that meet a project’s requirements.

Iris Ceramica Group’s ActiveSurfaces ceramics was awarded The Innovation Award, while Eumar Design was recognised for its environmental efforts with The Sustainability Award. The Technology Award was presented to marine interior refitspecialist Trimline for its new business application, the Trimline App. Meanwhile, outfitter MJM Marine and health technology company Vyv received The Collaboration Award. The two companies worked together to adapt Vyv’s antimicrobial lighting products for use in the maritime industry.

“We are delighted to win this award for our collaboration with such an innovative company,” said Gary Annett, CEO of MJM Marine. “With our expertise in the outfitting industry we are well placed to help clients integrate Vyv lighting products into existing spaces onboard cruise ships as well as newbuilds. They offer safety and security to customers and staff at a time when people demand higher environmental wellness standards. That’s really important as we work with our clients in the cruise industry to get their fleets up and running again safely.”

Two awards were presented to individuals to recognise their outstanding contribution to their teams and the wider industry. Andy Yuill, managing director of design studio SMC Design, received The Leadership Award for his work during the recent challenging period, while Petra Ryberg, head of design at P&O Australia, was given The Community Champion Award.

Finally, the efforts of teams within the industry were recognised with four awards. Cruise Line Team of the Year was presented to Carnival Corporation, while Design Studio Team of the Year was awarded jointly to SMC Design and Rottet Studio following their work together on Viking Cruises’ Viking Octantis. Outfitting Team of the Year was presented to The Deluxe Group’s marine fit-out team in recognition of its ability to adapt to difficult circumstances to complete unique projects. Finally, Fincantieri received the Shipyard Team of the Year award, recognising the shipbuilder’s position as a leader in global cruise ship design and construction.

Categories for the third edition of the Cruise Ship Interiors Awards will be announced in summer 2022.

Cruise Conversations Live 2022

The third edition of Cruise Conversations Live took place at Cruise Ship Interiors Design Expo Americas 2022. This leading cruise industry conference occurred throughout the two day duration of the show, with four inspiring conference sessions, and, new to CSI 2022, three industry related workshops designed to address suppliers’ most pressing questions.

In April, the first five speakers for Cruise Conversations Live 2022 were announced. The line-up included Thomas Westergaard (Hurtigruten), Sascha Lang (Royal Caribbean Cruises) and Javier Calle (Studio DADO) to name a few. Closer to the event, CSI published the full 2022 conference program . This included sessions addressing how interiors could become more sustainable, supply chain management, and discussions around what makes great design great. The 2022 conference program also included a Cruise Ship Interiors Design Expo first: three workshops dedicated to addressing suppliers’ biggest challenges and questions. The key takeaways from Cruise Conversations Live 2022 were summarised in Cruise Conversations Live 2022 Roundup: Our Top Six Takeaways.

Cruise Ship Interiors Design Expo 2021

In the run up to Cruise Ship Interiors and Hospitality Expo 2021, an exciting show itinerary was announced with many things not to miss including 250+ exhibitors, a Happy Hour drinks reception, product launches, and the brand new Health & Hygiene Zone . This was a new area of the show floor that would be exclusively dedicated to exhibitors whose products and services guarantee the health & safety of passengers and crew on cruise ships. This addressed the increased demand of hygiene and safety protocols on board cruise ships amid the COVID-19 pandemic. An extensive conference program was also announced with inspiring sessions covering guest behaviour, the future of hospitality, and more in its opening day . The second day of the cruise industry conference would then close with discussions around health & hygiene and sustainability from leading voices in the cruise interiors industry.

A long-awaited reunion

In July 2021, registration opened for CSI & CSH , as well as for Cruise Ship Interiors Design Expo Europe. The events, taking place on 28 – 29 October 2021 in Miami, and 1 – 2 December 2021 in Europe, would each commence with a reunion party for the cruise interiors industry. This would allow attendees to unite and celebrate the community for the first time in two years. Following the big cruise interiors reunion party, over the course of two days, attendees, made up of cruise lines, architects, designers, outfitters and suppliers, would be able to enjoy action-packed show floors, inspiring conferences, and face to face networking for the first time in two years. All networking opportunities, conference sessions and more can be found in the 2021 show itinerary.

In October 2021, CSI and CSH announced new dates for the event due to ongoing travel restrictions in the US. Changing from 28 – 29 October to 10 – 11 November 2021, these new dates would allow more exhibitors and visitors to attend the show.

Finally, in November 2021, CSI & CSH kicked off with a bang at the official reunion party. Here the cruise interiors and hospitality communities gathered for the first time in two years. The next morning, day one of CSI & CSH was commemorated with a ceremonial ribbon cutting. This set off the two-day event of thought-provoking conference sessions, a vibrant exhibition featuring the most ground-breaking exhibitors, and exciting networking events. Finally, CSI & CSH finished after its second day on 11 November 2021. The 2021 show was a great success, with many of its key moments captured in the 2021 show gallery.

Cruise Conversations Live 2021

The second Cruise Conversations Live conference took place at Cruise Ship Interiors Design Expo Americas 2021. Over the course of two days, delegates gathered to hear leading insights from 25+ speakers , including Nedgé Louis-Jacques (Tomas Tillberg Design), Captain Patrik Dahlgren (Royal Caribbean Group), and Dee Cooper (Virgin Voyages). Across seven stimulating panels and keynote sessions, they spoke about a variety of topics. These included standardizing health & hygiene on cruise ships, sustainability, the latest interior design trends of 2021, and more. CSI later summarised the most thought provoking talking points in a blog post, five takeaways from Cruise Conversations Live 2021.

Cruise Ship Interiors Design Expo Americas 2020

After a successful launch show in Miami, CSI announced that it would host its first Cruise Ship Interiors Awards . This would take place before the second show in June 2020. A later press release announced the award categories and judges.

Following the COVID-19 outbreak, unfortunately Cruise Ship Interiors Design Expo Americas 2020 was postponed. This difficult decision was made to protect the health and safety of attendees and prevent the spread of COVID-19. The dates for the next CSI & CSH expo were later confirmed as 28 – 29 October 2021.

As a result of this, the 2020 Cruise Ship Interiors Awards took place virtually. In June 2020, viewers tuned in to a live premiere of the ceremony where the judging panel revealed the CSI Award winners.

CSI & CSH Online

In July 2020, a virtual event, CSI & CSH Online, was announced . This would take place in September 2020, bringing the cruise interiors and hospitality communities together for an action-packed day of successful meetings, an industry-leading conference program, and Q&As. The event ran on 2 September 2020 and included a live cruise industry conference and virtual networking for hundreds of leading brands from cruise design, refurbishment and newbuild to guest experience, F&B and health & hygiene. Cruise Conversations

Cruise Conversations was a webinar series that facilitated discussions between cruise industry experts on the most pressing topics and trends facing the cruise interiors industry. An in-person accredited conference program takes place over two days each year at Cruise Ship Interiors Design Expo Americas.

Cruise Conversations Webinars

In 2020, CSI launched the Cruise Conversations webinar series. The webinar series consisted of longer, multi panel episodes, and ‘Cruiseday Tuesdays’, shorter, more informal conversations. All the Cruise Conversations webinars are available to members of CSI+, Cruise Ship Interior Expo’s exclusive member platform.

Cruise Conversations episodes typically featured three speakers moderated by Toby Walters, CEO, Cruise Ship Interiors. They provided an in-depth exploration into significant topics. The first episode, COVID-19: Putting a Positive Spin on the Elephant in the Room, saw industry leaders discussing their top design priorities after the global pandemic. In the second episode, Getting Specified: Top Considerations from Top Designers , cruise line representatives discussed the process of procuring suppliers, and the type of suppliers that are in most demand. The discussion gave many insights into the ways in which suppliers can get specified for cruise interiors . Speakers from the likes of MSC Cruises and Princess Cruises & Holland America Line shared their top tips.

Episode three of Cruise Conversations, Sustainability on the Seas , explored one of the industry’s most current issues. Webinar guests discussed the ways in which the pandemic has opened the door to a return to an even more sustainable cruise . The fourth episode of Cruise Conversations live was The Future of Cruise Hospitality. Here, leading voices in the cruise hospitality community explored how hotel operations, dining, and housekeeping must change to survive COVID-19.

Cruiseday Tuesdays

Cruiseday Tuesdays, another series hosted by Cruise Conversations, consisted of shorter episodes that ran between the Cruise Conversations webinars. These were informal discussions with one leading voice in the cruise interior community. Speakers included Petra Ryberg (P&O Australia), Derek Barkas (YSA Design), Callie Tedder-Hares (Volume Creative), and Jon Ingleton (Cruise & Ferry Review).

In early 2021, Elite Exhibitions, organisers of Cruise Ship Interiors Design Expo Americas and Europe launched a subscription platform, CSI+. CSI+ membership is for forward-thinking professionals working within the cruise interiors sector.

CSI+ membership gives VIPs the power to search and source suppliers, share their expertise, keep up to date with the latest trends, and grow their professional network. For suppliers, CSI+ provides the opportunity to establish a network, build valuable relationships with peers, increase brand awareness, discover collaboration opportunities, get the latest insights and connect with buyers.

Members of CSI+ receive access to exclusive networking opportunities including the Community Networking Hour and face to face CSI+ socials. These include CSI+ member-exclusive events held at Cruise Ship Interiors Expos. Members also gain access to product sourcing via the CSI+ Makers list, premium listings on the online Member Directory, and the opportunity to submit content for the CSI+ Community Bulletin. In addition to these benefits, CSI+ is the best place to stay up to date with the latest industry insights through white papers, industry reports, conference sessions and more.

In 2023, CSI+ unveiled a new branding and website relaunch . This new visual identity followed a cohesive design style, matching the refreshed CSI branding launched earlier the same year.

Hotel & Resort Design South

In November 2022, Elite Exhibitions launched a new show, Hotel & Resort Design South (HRDS). Taking place alongside CSI, Hotel & Resort Design South is a brand-new hotel product sourcing and networking event. HRDS was created exclusively to connect designers, architects and the global supply chain with hotel & resort brands from the South and LATAM.

Taking place 6 – 7 June 2023 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, HRDS included a full day of content via a dedicated conference program, a Product Showcase featuring the most innovative products and services on the market, plus a host of exclusive networking opportunities including Speed Networking which provides participants with a one-to-one meeting experience.

To complete the HRDS experience, attendees were presented with a leading design conference and workshop agenda. Consisting of thought-provoking keynotes and inspiring content delivered by the biggest names and brands in the industry. These sessions left attendees feeling inspired, up to date on the latest trends and provided them with a holistic view of the state of the hotel interiors industry.

HRDS will be returning for a second year on 6 – 7 June 2024 at the Miami Beach Convention Center alongside Cruise Ship Interiors Design Expo Americas.
