Last, this rum tour in Nassau will pass by Bob Marley’s former home for cool stories. The excursion ends at Cable Beach , one of the island’s most beautiful beaches, where you’ll have some time to relax and swim. My advice is to skip the swimming part if you had way too many drinks.

Take on the best excursions in Nassau by opting for thrilling jeep tours that offer different exploration experiences. Jeeps let you go off the beaten path and discover hidden gems. What To Do In Nassau With Kids

Headed to The Bahamas and looking for things to do in Nassau? You’ve come to the right place! Whether for kids or adults, there are tons of unforgettable things to do in Nassau.

What to do in Nassau, Bahamas

Finding what to do in Nassau with kids is not hard! The Bahamas are a beautiful place to visit and downtown Nassau is the hot spot of the island. I dare say we enjoyed our time around Nassau more then we did at the Atlantis.

This year, our family decided to take our Spring Break trip to The Bahamas. Mostly because we wanted to visit the Atlantis Resort ( which was a real let down and you can read more about that here ) .

But I also knew that even the best resorts do no hold my daughter’s attention after a few days. And since this trip was going to be 8 days long, I knew I needed to find more of what to do in Nassau!

  • Related: Best Places to Eat In Nassau

Exploring Downtown Nassau

Everything we did in downtown Nassau can easily be done in one day if you don’t have a lot of time. But you can definitely spread it out and not rush around if you want to spend more than a day exploring the area.

We planned for one day, but ended up coming down for a second day (mostly because the kids were bored of Atlantis).

Getting Around Nassau

Navigating Nassau was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be. They have tons of taxis for all the tourists and its really easy to find one.

TIP: Taxis don’t measure their fare like they do in the US. They just wait until the end of your ride to tell you how much you owe. Don’t fall for this! Tell the taxi driver where you are going and what the cost will be to get there. And don’t be afraid to negotiate…it’s almost expected!

Take the Jitney! The jitney is the Bahamas public bus. They are extremely safe and easy to travel on. And the best part is they are only $1.25 per person. This means our family of 4 were able to travel from the Baha Mar Resort to downtown Nassau for only $5.

We also felt super safe in the jitney. It was actually packed with other tourists because the jitney runs from most of the resorts to the downtown shop area. We met some other travelers on our jitney ride and our kids said the jitney was one of their favorite things to do in Nassau. Go figure!

The Best Things To Do In Nassau, Bahamas

The best part is, everything I mention is super affordable. Because The Bahamas are super expensive and it was nice to have a day where we didn’t spend our life savings. This is a list of everything you’ll want to do when going to Nassau with kids.

The Pirate Museum

One of our favorite things we did in Nassau was the Pirates of Nassau Museum . Even the kids loved it!

It cost around $12 per person to get in (less for kids) but check their prices online to make sure they haven’t changed. The museum is a self-guided tour that takes you through tons of history of Nassau and the pirates that landed on shore hundreds of years ago. They have a full-sized pirate ship and lots of interactive stuff to look at.

We were able to walk right in with no wait and it wasn’t too crowded either. The entire museum took us about 2 hours and of course, it ends with a gift shop to buy some cool pirate gear.

I wont give away all the secrets and surprises but I will say this… both the kids AND the adults really enjoyed this museum!

The Pirates of Nassau Museum, Nassau

Fort Fincastle

After the pirate museum, we took about a 10-minute walk to Fort Fincastle. The walk was easy but the kids did complain a little. A horse-drawn carriage would also have been a fun way to get there.

Fort Fincastle was built around 1793 and was built to provide protection for Nassau during the time of pirates. It sits on top of the highest point of Nassau so you can look all the way around it and see the entire island. Guided tours were only like $5 and I highly recommend them. You can walk through yourself, but our guide was funny and made the fort a lot more interesting for the kids with lots of cool and gory facts.

Fort Fincastle, Nassau

Queens Staircase

If you go to fort Fincastle, don’t miss seeing the Queens Staircase (I mean, its literally right next to it).

The Queens staircase is literally something you just walk to and take a bunch of cool photos of. It wont take you long. But the history of it is pretty cool. It was built solely by slaves BY HAND. They cut the limestone out of the mountain to form this giant staircase.

The walls surrounding it flow with water from the rocks and it is pretty impressive. It makes for some really great Instagram photo ops!

The Queen's Staircase

The Straw Market

After out time at Fort Fincastle and the Queens Staircase, we took a light walk back to downtown Nassau to the Straw Market.

The straw market is an open air market located along the shore near the cruise ships. Its a great place to buy some souvenirs like bags, shirts, statues, mugs, and even some authentic hand made items from local Bahamians.

Fair warning! Vendors at the straw market are very pushy and make it hard to stroll around and look. You need to have thick skin if you intend to shop there. It’s something I was used to but it really bothered the kids and made us leave early.

Before we left, my daughter dig her hair braided here. There are several ladies who do the hair braiding at the straw market. The rest of the vacation, people would stop my daughter and compliment her braids and ask where they could get them done… so if you are looking for hair braiding, head over to the straw market!

The Straw Market in Nassau

Parliment Square

Parliament square is a great place to walk around and look at a little history of The Bahamas. Its also located right in downtown Nassau near all the cruise ships so its an easy walk while you’re shopping.

You’ll also find most of the touristy shops here if you are looking for some Bahamas shirts or souvenirs for your family and friends.

TIP: Shop here before you buy anything at the resort ! My daughter wanted a stuffed pig to remember her time swimming with the pigs and it was $30 at the resort. We found the EXACT Same stuffed pig in a shop in downtown Nassau for only $10.

Parliament Square in Nassau

Junkanoo Beach

Junkanoo Beach is the public beach in downtown Nassau that is open to the public and probably one of the most popular beaches in the area. Its close to the cruise ships and right in the middle of downtown, so its easy to walk to and spend a few hours at.

The sand is soft and plentiful and there is a ton of activities you can do there. Not to mention there are tons of places to eat along the sand.

TIP: Be careful when at Junkanoo beach. It is the area of the highest theft in Nassau. I personally know a family that had all their backpacks stolen from the beach while they were in the water. Invest in a beach safe to keep your valuables out of thieves’ hands!

Junkanoon Beach

Other Things To Do Around Nassau

If you are staying in The Bahamas for a while, there is plenty to do! While we did some really cool things in Nassau, here are some of our absolute favorites that you shouldn’t miss.

Swim with Pigs! Hang out with Iguanas, swim with sharks, snorkeling Pablo Escobar’s plane, and swim with pigs. Take a day trip with Shore Thing Escapes for the BEST day in The Bahamas!

Spend a Day on a Private Island! Head over to the Blue Lagoon Island and spend an entire day on a private beach, with drinks, floats, and swimming with the dolphins.

Which Atlantis Hotel is Best For Families: How To Choose The Right One

I was in rhe Bahamas a week ago….i wish i had gone downtown..stayed at tbe atlantis most of the time..its was fun but am sure me amd my daughter would have enjoyed downtown more…what other vacation travels would you recomend….travel is my passion as well thanks

How old is your daughter? We just got back from Kauai and that so far is our top favorite destination. The beaches and snorkeling are amazing and there are tons of adventure activities that kept us busy!

I really enjoyed reading this blog. I’m shocked you had such a bad experience at Atlantis. I’ve heard great things about the resort. I’ll have to read your blog to find out why before we plan a trip there. We’ve been to Nassau and spent some time downtown but it sounds like we have a bit more exploring to do. We’ll be in the Bahamas later this year. I was bummed when our cruise changed the itinerary to the Bahamas but now I’m excited to see some things we missed. Thanks for all the info.

August 29, 2019 By Sippy Cup Mom Leave a Comment

While the Bahamas have been popular tourist destinations for many years, in March 2019, visitor numbers reached an all-time high of 749,040.

Thanks to the incredible beaches, balmy weather, and plenty of attractions in the capital city of Nassau, it’s clear why this slice of the Caribbean is a must-visit.

Whether you want to relax and kick back on a white sandy beach or explore the best family-friendly Nassau attractions, there really is something for everyone.

To learn more, check out this selection of the best things to do in Nassau!

best family excursions in nassau

  • Head to Ardastra Gardens

Set on four acres of tropical gardens, the Ardastra Gardens, Zoo, & Conservation Center is one of the best family-friendly Nassau attractions.

Flamingos march on command to entertain visitors, while children love hand-feeding the rainbow lorikeets. The zoo also specializes in the conservation of several endangered Caribbean species, including a variety of iguanas and the Bahama Parrot.

  • Enjoy Blue Lagoon Island

No trip to Nassau is complete without a day on Blue Lagoon Island. Also known as Salt Cay, Blue Lagoon Island is a private island located 3 miles from Nassau that’s full of  fun things to do  for the whole family.

As a natural habitat for sea lions, dolphins, and a range of fish species, Blue Lagoon Island is home to a three-acre marine mammal facility. Here, animal lovers can participate in the Dolphin Encounters program. As well as learning all about dolphins, the program offers you the chance to feed, pet, and even swim with these friendly mammals.

Other fun ways to spend your day on the island include touring the island on a Segway, relaxing in a hammock, snorkeling, and swimming. And children are sure to love the island’s water park, which is packed with inflatable toys and games.

  • Visit the Pirates of Nassau Museum

Here at the Pirates of Nassau Museum, children can learn more about Nassau’s seafaring days. Museum visitors get to explore the shantytown of Nassau as well as a replica of the pirate ship Revenge . There’s also plenty of pirate paraphernalia to interest your kids, while the theatrical pirate hosts are sure to keep them entertained.

  • Go on a Powerboat Adventure

If you’re looking for family activities with more of an adrenaline rush, how about a day trip in a powerboat?

It’s the ultimate way to take in all the sights and sounds of Nassau from the water. Plus, you’ll get the opportunity to snorkel in the crystal clear reefs and feed sharks, iguanas, and stingrays in the wild (if you dare)!

Food is included in the package, with a menu featuring grilled fish, steak, hot dogs, and pasta, as well as wine, liquors, juices, and sodas.

  • Relax on Cabbage Beach

While you’ll find plenty of nearby beaches on any map of Nassau, Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island is ideal for families.

Cabbage Beach is quieter and less crowded than other beaches in the area. And, with its crystal clear turquoise waters and a long stretch of white sand, it’s clear why it was named one of the world’s best beaches.

Gentle sea waves make it perfect for little ones to swim and paddle in while all you moms and dads can relax and sunbathe on the beach’s sandy shores.

  • Have a Blast at Atlantis Resort

As well as Cabbage Beach, Paradise Island is also home to one of the top Nassau attractions, Atlantis Resort. It’s the kind of place you have to experience to believe.

At this incredible resort, you’ll find 11 pools, a golf course, a casino, the largest open-air marine habitat in the world, and several walk-in aquariums.

Atlantis Resort is also home to the Adventure Water Park. The aquapark is complete with a variety of water slides, a replica Mayan temple, and an artificial river with rapids. Plus, there’s even a water slide that cuts through an aquarium full of sharks.

  • Experience Stingray City

There’s no shortage of opportunities to interact with marine wildlife in Nassau. But for something a little different, Stingray City offers you the chance to meet, pet, and feed stingrays.

Unlike some other species, the southern stingrays at Stingray City are harmless. As such, you and your family can enjoy the graceful movements of these unusual creatures as they caress you with their silky wings. There’s also a photographer on hand to capture these memorable moments.

  • Explore Parrot Jungle’s Garden of the Groves

Garden of the Groves is an 11-acre tropical paradise that you and your kids will love exploring. With waterfalls, an abundance of trees, and exotic flowering shrubs, you’ll feel like you’re in the depths of the jungle as you walk.

The area is home to a range of bird species, including the red-legged thrush, the long-tailed tropic bird, and the nighthawk. And, the forest groves of Rand Memorial also offer the perfect opportunity to spot flamingos along its network of dense trails.

  • Shop for Souvenirs

Nassau’s famed Straw Market is a great spot for you and your kids to buy souvenirs and local specialties as mementos of your family vacation.

Little girls will love the handmade tote bags and straw purses at the market. But with hundreds of vendors selling a variety of goods, you’re all sure to find something you love.

Another great destination to shop for souvenirs is Bay Street in downtown Nassau. With a wide selection of shops, you’ll be spoiled when it comes to finding trinkets and gifts. Plus, the Nassau downtown area is a great place to try local food and drink specialties, such as rum cake.

  • Try the Local Cuisine on Bimini Road

Whether you’ve spent the day shopping, sightseeing, or snorkeling, you’re bound to have worked up an appetite.

And there’s no better way to experience the different flavors and foods of the local cuisine than by heading to Bimini Road in the Marina Village shopping district.

Bimini Road has put itself on the Nassau map as a great family-friendly destination for exploring Bahamian cuisine. Try local favorites such as Jerk chicken, fried plantains, peas and rice, and conch stew and fritters. Delicious!

The Best Things to Do in Nassau with Kids

As this list of the best things to do in Nassau shows, this popular vacation destination offers plenty of ways to keep your kids entertained.

Cruise Tips for Families

Nassau, Bahamas with Kids [CRUISE PORT GUIDE]

Last updated January 12, 2021

Atlantis Resort - Nassau Bahamas with Kids Cruise Port Guide

Its year round steady daytime temperature and proximity to Florida – just 185 miles southeast of Miami – make Nassau a popular port of call.

Nassau is located on New Providence Island and is connected by bridge to Paradise Island – home to Atlantis Resort.

Primary Language Spoken: English

Currency: Bahamian Dollar. The US Dollar is widely accepted at par on New Providence Island and Paradise Island

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in Nassau?

Prince George Wharf is where all cruise ships dock in Nassau.

Situated adjacent to downtown Nassau, Prince George Wharf can accommodate up to 7 cruise ships at a time – meaning there can be up to 20,000 cruise passengers visiting a day.

Festival Place Welcome Center is the building cruise visitors pass through on the way to downtown Nassau. Festival Place is just steps away from where ships port.

Passengers who have booked a port excursion that requires bus or van pickup can meet their tour guide or excursion director at the water fountain on the left hand side as you exit Festival Place Welcome Center.

On the right hand side of Festival Place’s building exit, you’ll find taxis, carriage rides, scooter rentals, tour boats, ferries and the water taxi to Paradise Island.

Getting Around Nassau

Taxi – Taxis are the most popular way for cruise passengers to get around Nassau. They can be easily found right outside Festival Place. For families traveling with young children that require a car seat or booster seat, we recommend bringing your own or booking an excursion/tour in advance with a taxi company that has car seats and booster seats.

Bus – Locally known as “jitneys”, the public bus transit in Nassau is an affordable way to see the island. Fares vary depending on the route and exact change is required. Payment is made when disembarking.

The closest bus stop to the Prince George Wharf cruise ship dock is in front of McDonalds at George and Bay Street (across from the British Colonial Hilton). This bus goes from downtown Nassau to Cable Beach – approximately 4 miles west of the cruise port.

Walking – Downtown Nassau is walkable as the area isn’t too large. Guests can pick up walking tour maps at Festival Place. The duty free shopping area is approximately 5 minutes walking from Prince George Wharf to Bay Street.

The Straw Market, Diamonds International, and other Caribbean port favorites like Del Sol are located near by too. Families with young children in strollers should be aware that some sidewalks near the port are cobblestone and you’ll need a stroller that can handle uneven walkways.

Water Taxi – For cruise guests heading to Paradise Island, the Nassau Water Taxi runs every half hour between 9AM to 6PM from the Prince George dock. One-way ticket costs $4/person.

Horse-Drawn Carriage – This can be a fun way to tour the downtown area. They cost around $15 per person for a 25 minute ride. They can be found just outside of the Festival Place Welcome Center.

Car – Renting a car is not recommended for cruise passengers because of the limited time you have in Nassau. Car rentals are quite expensive (over $100/day) and you’ll be driving on the left hand side of the road.

Kid Friendly Beaches in Nassau

There are no shortage of beaches in Nassau or Paradise Island. All of the beaches listed below are public (no admission fee, no lifeguards) and are near the Prince George Wharf cruise port.

Junkanoo Beach – This is the closest public beach to port – less than 15 minutes walking. Junkanoo Beach is not a large beach and can get crowded quickly if there are several ships in port.

Junkanoo Beach has public toilets and change rooms which make it popular with cruisers, vacationers and locals. There are several food and souvenir vendors along the beach. Some food and drink vendors offer free WiFi connection. Beach chair rentals can run anywhere from $5 to $10 per day.

Cable Beach – Located about 5 miles west of downtown Nassau is Cable Beach – known for its crystal clear waters, soft sand and smaller crowds. Cruisers can get there by taxi (approximately $20) or by the #10 bus ($1.25 per person).

There are many dining options available for Cable Beach visitors – restaurants at nearby hotels or local food vendors. Cable Beach stretches about 2.5 miles and is home to several luxury resorts – most which offer day passes if you’re interested in more amenities like pool access, lunch, change rooms or specific water sport activities.

Cabbage Beach – One of the most well-known beaches in the world and located on the northern side of Paradise Island, it is home to several large hotels and resorts including Atlantis Resort and Hotel Riu Palace Paradise Island.

Cruisers can get to Cabbage Beach by taxi or water taxi. Public access to Cabbage Beach is on Casino Drive next to Riu Palace.

Because of it’s location, it tends to get crowded and very busy by noon and mid-afternoon. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available for rent – expect to pay $10/chair and $20/umbrella as well as water sports equipment.

There are several food and drink vendors but no restrooms or change room facilities. If you require these amenities, it’s recommended you by a day pass at one of the hotels or resorts.

Just a word of caution – Cabbage Beach is often red-flagged in the winter months for its rip tides and strong waves.

The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar is a Nassau family resort with numerous activities for adults and children to enjoy during the day and into the evening. The resort stays true to the Bahamas’ natural beauty, with hotel rooms and suites containing floor-to-ceiling windows with spectacular ocean views and surrounding greenery.

The hotel also has over 40 restaurants, bars, and food trucks featuring a slew of world cuisines and every type of dining experience, from fine dining to beachside food stands. Adults can compromise with the kids by spending one evening at a fine dining sushi bistro with a cocktail lounge and eating delicious wood-fired pizzas the next night.

Grand Hyatt Baha Mar has a massive golf course right on the water, a long stretch of white sandy beach, and multiple pools for lounging by the water. The hotel also provides snorkeling equipment and wildlife tours to guests interested in seeing the local flora and fauna.

Kids will be overjoyed to know that the Grand Hyatt has recently constructed a massive 15-acre waterpark called Baha Bay with 24 slides, including thrill slides and water coasters. There’s also a lazy river, a tipping bucket and water battle playground, a wave pool, infinity pools, and a beachfront lounge area, to name a few.

Located on Nassau’s paradisiacal Cable Beach, Rosewood Baha Mar offers both a high-end, refined luxury experience for adults along with educational and entertaining children’s programs. You can choose from numerous accommodation options at Rosewood, from luxurious hotel rooms in a high-rise hotel with great ocean views to large family-style suites to large villas with your own private pool.

Rosewood Baha Mar guests have free access to the Grand Hyatt’s Baha Bay waterpark, which has water slides, wave pools, beachfront lounges, a large casino, surf simulations, and nine bars and restaurants. You and the family could spend three full days inside this massive waterpark, exploring all its different activities.

The Rosewood Baha Mar also has a kids club that provides fun educational programs for kids and family-friendly tours that take you out of the hotel and into Nassau proper. The children’s program has enjoyable, interactive activities for the kids, like a massive pirate ship replete with pirate costumes for role-playing.

If you aren’t versed in the fantastical lore of Atlantis , it’s a figment of Plato’s imagination described as a paradisiacal eutopia fit for the Greek Gods. The Bahamas have made such a treasure island a reality by creating the massive Atlantis resort complex, with six different hotels inside of it. One of these hotels is The Reef.

The Reef strives to provide a home-away-from-home experience for families who want a private and exclusive vacation with their close-knit family. Instead of navigating a massive multi-story hotel, The Reef provides guests with personal residential-style suites and villas. Each residence at the reef has a private pool and exclusive access to a secluded portion of Paradise Beach.

The suites and villas have their own kitchen for enjoying family meals together, but you also have access to delicious restaurants offering fresh seafood, burgers, and more. The Reef also has its own Starbucks, so parents can start the day with a familiar cup of joe.

The Reef also has an exclusive giant infinity pool for families to enjoy a peaceful break from ocean activities. While the Reef is an intimate and more private resort experience, you still have access to the rest of the resort’s countless restaurants, beaches, docks, theaters, and water parks.

best family excursions in nassau

The Royal is another hotel inside Atlantis, located in the center of the enormous complex, within walking distance to all the most sought-after natural landmarks and aquatic entertainment facilities. Kids want everything at their fingertips, and that’s why the Royal is the best place to stay for families who want an action-packed vacation.

Your luxurious hotel room spares no expense, and you just walk outside the lobby to be right in the middle of Atlantis’ famous Aquaventure water park, with massive slides, lazy rives, tide pools, and so much more. There’s even a ride that drops you through a pitch-black tunnel that soon reveals a shark tank with live sharks swimming around you before spitting you out into a giant pool. We guarantee you won’t experience a thrill like that anywhere else!

Another unique amenity inside The Royal is a giant multi-story aquarium that takes you below sea level to marvel at the wealth of marine life swimming peacefully around you. It’s a breathtaking experience for kids and adults.

best family excursions in nassau

The Coral at Atlantis is a 600-room hotel within the greater Atlantis complex built with families in mind. The Coral’s rooms are mainly family-sized suites with multiple bedrooms that open out onto private balconies with fantastic ocean views and lush tropical greenery.

The Coral has numerous family-friendly restaurants like an authentic family-style southern Barbeque restaurant called Virgil’s with giant platters of hickory-smoked barbeque and classic sides that the whole family can share after a long day in the sun. The Coral also has a great ice cream parlor featuring Bahamian-style ice cream, gelato, and sorbet served in waffle cones or sandwiched between two freshly baked cookies.

The Coral has an exclusive natural pool that hooks up to Atlantis’ massive lazy river. The whole family can float on to access other areas of Atlantis, like the waterpark at the Royal. The Coral also has a teen-only nightclub called CRUSH. Teens yearning for a bit of independence from their parents can dance the night away and sip sugary mocktails while parents also get a little time to themselves.

best family excursions in nassau

Located between Cove and Paradise beach inside Atlantis, The Cove offers the most privacy and caters more to the adult crowd, with adult-only pools, bars, and fine dining. The Cove keeps kids in mind with three other multi-level pools and exclusive access to secluded areas of both Cove and Paradise beach to enjoy the joys of a family picnic in unfettered nature.

Adults can enjoy refined restaurants like Sip Sip, with innovative seasonal dishes and craft cocktails. Families can have a relaxing oasis all to themselves with the most luxurious accommodations at The Cove, as well as access to the rest of Atlantis’ more adventurous and entertaining activities.

There are shuttles from The Cove to attractions like Dolphin Cay, the largest marine-mammal sanctuaries and habitats in the world, where you can swim and snorkel with dolphins, seals, and schools of vibrantly colored tropical fish. You can also sign up for educational tours with Dolphin Cay staff, who will give entertaining and informative lectures on the Cay’s many marine mammals, followed by an interactive play session with adorable sea lions.

best family excursions in nassau

The Beach at Atlantis is both a family-friendly and budget-friendly hotel within Atlantis. If funds are tight this year, you can still have a luxurious and fun-filled Caribbean vacation at The Beach. The smaller, more casual rooms at The Beach are still very comfortable and offer great views of the surrounding resort.

The best part about The Beach is that you pay less for your hotel room while still having access to activities, beaches, pools, restaurants, casinos, and entertainment programs offered in the other five hotels on the complex.

That said, The Beach has plenty for kids to do before you even start to explore the rest of Atlantis. There is a kid’s arcade called Gamer’s Reef where kids can play nautical-inspired interactive video games. The Beach is also home to a pottery studio where you and the kids can paint bowls, sculptures, and household objects, creating a beautiful memento of your time at Atlantis.

Located on the more exclusive New Providence Island, right on the shores of the stunning Cable Beach, SLS Baha Mar is as spectacular as its surroundings. SLS Baha Mar has received countless excellent reviews from guests for its incredible setting, service, and amenities, with write-ups in the New York Times and Conde Nast Traveler’s list of the top resorts in the Bahamas.

There are two giant infinity pools right on the beach, so you can follow up a day snorkeling and building sandcastles with a refreshing dip in the pool while still watching the waves crash. SLS Baha Mar has a wide selection of fine dining and sophisticated restaurants along with creative fusion concepts and casual beach bars and grilles. Plus, kids five and under eat for free at seven different restaurants.

Kids can also enjoy complimentary access to the Baha Bay Aquatic Park next to the Hyatt hotel. Adults can enjoy the Caribbean’s largest casino, lush spa, and an 18-hole golf course.

best family excursions in nassau

Like the famous Jimmy Buffet song, Margaritaville is the ultimate paradise for families looking to relax, play, and enjoy the Bahamian, laid-back beach life. Margaritaville has plenty of beachside lounging and endless frozen margarita bars for adults to relax. There’s also a massive lazy river where adults and kids can float, entertained by the incredible views of nature surrounding the hotel.

Margaritaville has the Fins Up Waterpark for kids and teenagers, with a surf stream simulator, slides, water playgrounds, and a challenging climbing wall. There’s also a high-tech entertainment complex with arcades, virtual-reality sports games, bowling, pool tables, and a movie theater.

Younger kids can enjoy a day of crafts, swimming at a guarded pool, and beach games orchestrated by a set of trained counselors.

Lastly, Margaritaville is steps away from Nassau’s bustling city entrance, where you and your family can explore shopping, restaurants, and city-wide events for a more authentic experience of the Bahamas.

best family excursions in nassau

One of the oldest resorts in the Bahamas, The Ocean Club opened in 1962 on the stunning and still less developed Paradise Island. Instead of a giant resort complex with multi-story hotels that obscure ocean views and uproot swaths of natural forests, The Ocean Club truly makes you feel at one with nature.

All buildings at the Ocean Club are low-rise plantation-style structures surrounded by jungle with lush walkways leading to more than 5 miles of white sandy beach. All rooms have oceanside balconies, and the grounds have a multi-tiered garden with old stone steps surrounded by bright pink bougainvillea that you can climb to witness spectacular views of the Nassau Harbor.

The Ocean Club has a large team of certified counselors to offer a full itinerary of games, classes, and excursions for kids. The Kids Club House has an arts and crafts room, a reading and board game corner, a computer lab, and a video game section with every console imaginable.

Sandyport Beach Resort is a family-owned and operated resort with families in mind. Suppose you’re looking for a more intimate, authentic, and secluded beach vacation away from the hustle and bustle of the enormous all-inclusive resorts like Atlantis or other Baha Mar giants. In that case, Sandyport is the perfect resort for you.

Sandyport has access to two incredible beaches: Lagoon Beach and Ocean Beach. Both offer miles of stunning shoreline, relaxing hammocks hung from the surrounding palm trees, fluffy white sand, and epic snorkeling. The resort provides complimentary snorkeling gear along with family boat tours with locals who know all the best spots. Sandyport has luxurious amenities like spas, pools, and lounge areas, as well as a kids’ pool with two slides.

The quaint and colorful buildings, smaller number of rooms, and authentic Bahamian fare served at the numerous restaurants and bars at Sandyport guarantee you and your family a family and culturally oriented vacation.

best family excursions in nassau

Located right in the heart of Nassau, Melia Nassau Beach offers a relaxing and fun-filled all-inclusive experience for the whole family with easy access to the capital city’s cultural attractions.

Melia lies right on the shores of the famous Cable Beach. You can spend the day lounging in the sun, snorkeling, and building sandcastles from the perfectly powdery white sand and then hit the town in the evening to explore the city center and buy a souvenir at one of the many interesting shops therein.

Melia’s various swimming pools have built-in waterfalls for the kids to play in. Their family programs include a Kid’s Club and exclusive family gardens where kids and their parents can participate in daily games and other family-friendly activities.

best family excursions in nassau

The British Colonial Hilton Nassau is an excellent intermediary between a massive all-inclusive resort like Atlantis and a small, modest family resort like Sandyport. The red-roofed colonial-style resort reflects the historic downtown Nassau in which it lies. A massive, manicured lawn offers outdoor restaurant seating that leads to a vast private pool overlooking a private beach with great views of the Junkanoo Beach cruise port.

The hotel has paddleboards and kayaks for the whole family to set out on an ocean adventure. There’s also an old-timey theater on the premises that offers great family entertainment like music and dance performances.

Another unique amenity at the British Colonial Hilton is that they have pet-friendly rooms, so you can bring the kids and the fur babies.

best family excursions in nassau

For families on a budget who want a relaxing vacation without all the frills of a five-star all-inclusive resort, the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Nassau is an excellent option that still has a ton of amenities for adults and kids.

There is a sizeable onsite pool and lounge area replete with a poolside bar and a snack bar for the kids. A large daily breakfast buffet and coffee and tea service are complimentary. You get private access to a beautiful beach where you can rent a private beach cabana and sun chaise loungers or simply post up with towels and a cooler full of snacks to enjoy a day at the beach.

You’re also a four-minute walk from the cruise port at Junkanoo Beach and the Straw Market, Nassau’s premier flea market and major tourist attraction.

In fact, the true origins of the Swimming Pigs lie in the neighbouring island to Big Major Cay which is – Staniel Cay. Staniel Cay was a small farming community, and so the farmers kept their pigs on Big Major Cay keeping their fowl smells away from the Staniel Cay Village.

The Exuma Cays are an exquisite collection of 365 tropical islands. And best visited from Nassau by plane for a Day Trip. This stunning archipelago of islands can be best viewed from above – that is where the best views of the turquoise waters and white sand beaches are.
