Safari Lounge, which had been affectionally nicknamed “The Dead Animal Bar” by Islamorada locals, was a beloved Lower Matecumbe landmark for decades.

Now let’s fast-forward to today and: Breaking News!!! Suntex Marinas came to the rescue with that much-needed TLC in the form of major renovations to the building; inside and out, throughout the property, everything from a brand-spanking new full kitchen with all new equipment, to a new and beautifully-landscaped private beachside lounge.

Newly renovated and opened and feels that way. We knew the outside area was not open yet due to negotiation with the HOA. Too bad because the outside eating area is VERY nice. So we gave it a try any way. Nice simple menu. I... had the shrimp dinner and hubby went safe with the Mahi sandwich. Sandwich was as expected and good. The shrimp dinner was perfect! Eight grilled shrimp with peppers and onions plus rice and black beans. Portion was perfect and allowed me to order dessert. Beat key lime I have had in awhile! Hubby’s chocolate cake was huge! Pretty tasty as well. Angela gave fantastic service and the kitchen was fast. More

First… The positives! The fried fish sandwich was amazing, great flavor texture very fresh. Ask them to add 2 pieces of cheese, it makes a difference. Also the fries are very good. Pass on the fish dip. Not much flavor and was sweet. Tuna salad... very good highly recommend. Pass on the conch fritters also sweet no conch. Location is very cool great views white sand beach and it’s only 3 months old. Now the worst service we have ever experienced. We were a table of 11 and their place was basically empty. We wanted the bill split by couple the server said no no no no.. Then we ask the manager and guess what. It was yes yes yes yes. Server forgot drink orders, then some lunch items, extremely slow service and at times we had to get up a get our drinks at the bar since they are just sitting there. But i would think they will work out the issues… i hope because the food was fantastic. Also the oysters wonderful and fresh… More

Excellent dinner tonight! Did not know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised at the delicious food and cocktails. I had the matcumbe salad with blackened shrimp - Yum! The blackened shrimp were excellent. Rest of family had mahi tacos, caesar salad with blackened shrimp,... and shrimp scampi. All enjoyed their meal. Cocktails or margaritas, painkillers, and coconut mojitos were also enjoyed. And to top off the evening Frannie our server was a big hit! More

We went as a group of four couples. Living nearby Safari would be a great spot for an easy meal. The host was somewhat rude to one of our friends. We ordered a variety of apps and entrees from the short menu. The restaurant was... out of French fries and subbed Rosemary potatoes which Rosemary apparently forgot to show up in. I had Oysters which were small but tasty. I had fish and chips. The fish was just barely OK, and again, the potatoes were not chips, but basically home fries. My wife had a Caesar salad with shrimp. The grilled shrimp were fine, the salad had a left over appearance. One party ordered Conch fritters, no taste whatsoever, the fried pickles were very tasty. The best looking entree was Mahi Mahi with beans and rice. Our friend said it was good. Apparently there was only one person in the kitchen so maybe that presented a challenge. This place has some great potential with an infusion of a little imaginative menu planning. Running out of French fries? Out tab with the tip was $100.00 for a couple. Not a good value. More

The staff was friendly and helpful. Happy hour was GREAT! The fish tocos Yum! Actually everything was Yum! We ordered all of the happy hour apps and the family liked everything. We had dinner there one night and the salmon was delicious so we went... back for the Caesar salad with grilled salmon. It was delicious too. The view is wonderful and the restaurant was very clean. No outside seating huge disappointment, rumor is there won't be for a long time. Our server was Isidro very attentive. Food was very disappointing. Drinks were very weak. It was quite empty for a Friday night. No hostess greeted us. Shane was very sweaty, not... appealing for a restaurant. The server from the table neutrons was so loud and obnoxious, very inappropriate. The bathrooms were messy and unisex. The place is nice with a cool lion but very boring, no ambiance at all. The outside being closed is a huge let down. Friends of our came in March were told a month and still shut down. Would I visit again, huge NO! More

Was so happy they were finally open. They did a great job remodeling the restaurant. The service was tremendous and the food was awesome. We had shrimp, oysters, cod, mahi and all were delicious. We wanted to eat on the outside deck but were told... the clearance had not yet been approved by the village. Living at Tollgate across the street I can tell you that I would appreciate the ability to dine alfresco looking at the ocean. Best of luck to Suntex and the great staff. More

The only negative issue was the coupon offering 1 free frozen drink to every guest turned out to be 1 free frozen drink per table. The server... was not even aware of this issue. We specifically made the drive to this place for our last night on Islamorada because we heard they had a stunning view. While this was true, we weren't allowed to eat (or even enjoy our drinks) out on the gorgeous deck. There were lovely tables... out there, but they were blocked off. We ordered drinks to start, but decided to leave without having dinner. Quite disappointing. More

Awesome new restaurant with great views and great food. We had the conch fritters, buffalo chicken sandwich and steak tacos. Francois at the bar kept us entertained and our drinks full the entire time, I highly recommend this place.

This is a great spot for a nice dinner with an amazing view! The food was great. Tons of flavor and a generous portion. Our server Francine was wonderful. We stopped in on our way home to Duck Key. We had drinks, fish dip, tacos, and a salad. The fish dip was amazing. Highly recommend stopping there and the view is amazing. A hidden gem.

Sadly the food was below average as was the portions. We stopped our first night and immediately agreed that although convenient, we would not return. Servers were beyond friendly and fantastic but the food was subpar.

South of the Seven

Tucked inside the Sugarloaf Lodge, owners chefs Paul Kapsalis and Kris Kubik serve modern American fare like roasted barrelfish with lemon caper sauce, shrimp and lobster cannelloni, and pecan-crusted chicken stuffed with bacon and blue cheese. Carnivores are not forgotten either, with the menu boasting a generous selection of meat dishes like the 55-ounce Prime bone-in Tomahawk ribeye steak.

Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen & Bar

A little removed from the party scene on Duval Street, this peaceful American restaurant inside the Perry Hotel Key West offers some of the island's best meals. Self-described as American coastal comfort food, appetizers like she-crab soup with blue crab sherry fritter and yellowfin tuna tartare are not to be missed before moving to other dishes like grilled pork chop with sweet corn and asparagus risotto, blackened mahi with blue crab succotash, and center cut filet of beef with goat cheese whipped potatoes.

Cuban Coffee Queen

Several outlets throughout town make it easy to get a regular caffeine fix, breakfast sandwiches, and plenty of merch like t-shirts with cheeky messages like “Drink More Cuban Coffee and Do Stupid Things Faster.” Coffee is available by the pound, meaning the caffeine party can continue at home.

B.O.'s Fish Wagon

Epitomizing the relaxed vibe of Key West, this colorful venue made from driftwood welcomes diners with a junk car swathed in bumper stickers. The menu is a straightforward array of fresh seafood caught from the docks a few blocks away, along with the prerequisite burger. The fried conch sandwich is a must, as is an order of gigantic onion rings.

Azur Restaurant

This local favorite is the ideal brunch spot within walking distance from all the action on Duval. Grab a table on the lush outdoor patio and indulge in Key lime French toast (yes, there’s pie in there!) and the crab cake Benedict served on a flatbread or Roesti potato pancake with brie, prosciutto, arugula, and hollandaise.

Eaton Street Seafood Market & Restaurant

Primarily a seafood market for the locals, this spot also serves one of the best lobster rolls south of Maine. The secret is the lobster-to-bun ratio. While many lobster rolls are guilty of overdoing it with carbs, diners are treated to a tidy, buttery, toasted bun generously packed with chilled lobster salad heavy on lobster meat. There’s no real seating inside, so snag one of the spots outside.

5 Brothers Grocery and Sandwich Shop

This tiny corner grocery has been doling out some of the best Cuban sandwiches and Cuban coffee for several generations. SAFARI TIM: THE KEYS REMEMBERS THE GRUFF BARTENDER WITH A HEART OF GOLD

Sometimes, bartender Tim “Safari Tim” Swann would just answer his customers’ orders with a grunt. Other times, he would simply hold up a cardboard sign with a handwritten message: “Loser!”, “Go the f*** home,” “Wrong Way A******,” among others. Still other times, he would flip people the bird from behind the bar. 

But yet, the man was beloved. A whole crew of his friends and former customers gathered recently at Islamorada’s Angler House Marina to reminisce about him. And he was legendary enough to be mentioned in writer David L. Sloan’s book “The Florida Keys Bucket List.”

Safari Tim passed on May 19 at age 60 after a years-long battle with vascular disease. He died in his sleep.

“That’s our blessing,” said Krissy Carnahan about his peaceful death. Carnahan helped arrange the Angler House gathering and was one of his best friends.

Swann came to the Keys from Louisiana in 1997, and after short spells at other hospitality venues, he ended up at the D.A.B. — the Dead Animal Bar, locals’ affectionate name for the Safari Lounge. He worked there for a long time, so long that he got the nickname “Safari Tim.” And he attracted a community of like-minded souls. 

Carnahan met him at the D.A.B. and recalls many a night that they hung out with the crowd until “the sun was coming up,” she said. “He said a lot by hardly saying anything. And he was a heavy pourer,” she said with a laugh. 

“The Dead Animal Bar was truly a Keys bar, and Tim was the heart of it,” said Carnahan. “The D.A.B. was not corporate. I lived in Lower Mat and it was the place to go — I met my husband on the dock there.”

Swann’s best friend was Kenny White. He pointed out that somehow, everyone knew Safari Tim. White recalls randomly running into someone in Canton, Ohio, who had visited the D.A.B. and remembered meeting the gruff yet soft-hearted bartender.

Sloan listed visiting Safari Tim and the Dead Animal Bar as Number 37 in his book “The Florida Keys Bucket List.” He groaned when Keys Weekly told him that Swann had passed.

“He was an amazing creature,” Sloan said. He added, half-jokingly, “His eyes told you he knew where all the bodies were buried, but the smile on his face said he wasn’t going to tell you.”

Swann’s former coworker, Kevin Potter, said, “He would always try to do something special for friends on the side of the bar — never to draw attention — with words, or an object.”

White agreed, saying Swann once gave a bartender at the Whistle Stop a new pair of shoes simply because he had complimented Swann’s shoes a couple weeks prior.

“And if you mentioned you liked a photo, he would have it put on canvas and slip it across the bar to you a couple weeks later,” said Carnahan.

The Angler House gathering turned into a mini celebration of life, with friends shouting memories between tables. 

“No one ever saw him run,” said one. 

“The man never raised his voice,” said another.

“He had this expression he always said,” said Beau Ricksecker, “‘Not my monkey, not my circus.’”

And when someone was overserved, he would quietly defuse the situation, often with humor, by holding up one of his cardboard signs.

His friends also noted that in order to poke fun at his gruff exterior, he would be the first to wear goofy holiday costumes, such as an ugly Christmas sweater or a supersize necklace of Mardi Gras beads, strung with large shiny balls that were the center of many an off-color joke.

“He was the nucleus of the community that started around the D.A.B,” said Potter. “He started a community of people who are still together now.”

But times changed. The Safari Lounge closed after Hurricane Irma swept through. Swann eventually found work at the Angler House. 

Toward the end, Carnahan and White called Swann “their son.” He had stopped drinking and smoking a few years before he passed after warnings from doctors about his vascular disease. But he had an aversion to medical care, and he was supposed to go for surgery. Yet he didn’t.

White would tell Swann, “Timmy, if you don’t call me, I’ll bang on your door.”

But one day in May, Swann didn’t answer Carnahan’s texts. And she knew. 

Swann’s family recognized that his Keys family was important to him, so they gave his friends half his ashes. Carnahan said they will organize a formal Celebration of Life and decide where to put his remains.

“We found those old cardboard signs in his room,” Carnahan said, sadly. “And people are still texting me, ‘Where’s Timmy?’”

Carnahan said that Safari Tim Swann’s Celebration of Life will be planned for when the snowbirds are back in town, possibly around the first of the year. For readers who are interested in attending, she suggests keeping an eye for announcements on Facebook.

The best Florida Keys Bars can offer stunning views, a chance to mingle with the locals, fun drinks and that feeling you’ve escaped off the map to a slower paced way of life. A fun way to catch the flavor of the Florida Keys is to bar crawl down the islands. Here are the best places you don’t want to miss!

We asked you, our readers, which Florida Keys Bars ( excluding Key West ) are your favorites and here’s how you ranked them. (If you’re looking for Key West information, click here for the Top Key West Bars as voted on by our readers)

Let’s travel down the Overseas Highway from the upper keys to the lower keys checking out the best bars along the way.

Best Florida Keys Bars:

1. alabama jacks (almost key largo).

Is it any surprise? Alabama Jacks is one of the best bars in the Keys. An iconic dive bar and one of the Florida Keys most popular places. Technically, it’s still located in the Miami-Dade county in the city of Homestead, Florida, but it’s definitely still part of the Florida Keys experience.

An open air restaurant and bar right on the mangrove lined water ways. Decorated in funky Florida shack style, with live music and off beat entertainment. It’s a biker bar, a locals bar, a fisherman crowd and a tourist attraction all rolled into one. Talk about eclectic and cool.

Alabama Jacks is the most popular of the Florida Keys Bars.

We love the clogging dancing ladies dressed in their cowboy boots and square dancing skirts. It’s just something you’ve got to see for yourself. And they encourage anyone to join them up on the dance floor.

The Parrot Breeze and the Rum Punch are both tasty tropical drinks if you’re looking for that Florida vibe and the conch fritters are fantastic!

Check out the Jimmy Buffett newspaper article framed on the wall just outside the bathrooms. He gives Alabama Jacks a great review. If you’ve got the time to take the slight detour off US1 to Card Sound Road ($1.50 toll road), it’s a worthy spot for a drink when bar crawling down the Florida Keys.

It closes at dusk, so make sure you get there with plenty of daylight left to enjoy the ambiance.

2. No Name Pub (Big Pine Key, Turn off at Mile Marker 31)

Another off the beaten path funky Florida Keys bar is the No Name Pub , the oldest bar in the lower Keys opening in 1936. Their tag line is “You Found It” because once upon a time (in a world with less technology) it was hard to find. Google Maps and GPS will easily take you there today.

Take caution driving to the restaurant as both times I’ve been there, the adorably tiny Florida Key Deer were meandering along the roadway.

The No Name Pub serves a variety of American foods, Florida favorites and their pizza is what most people rave about. I’ve had their smoked fish dip for an appetizer and highly recommend it. Stop in to tack your dollar bills on the wall (along with a hundred thousand others, making awesome interior decor!), grab a cold beer and enjoy a piece of old Florida. Be glad you found it.

3. Caribbean Club (Key Largo, Mile Marker 104)

The most famous bar on the list! The Caribbean Club was built in 1938 and in 1947 it was used as a filming location in the Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall film Key Largo . If you watched the Netflix original show, Bloodline , there were outdoor scenes filmed here as well.

It’s still a real dive bar and locals hangout, it doesn’t feel touristy at all. Pool table, bar with a view and outdoor picnic tables shaded by palm fronds. It’s pretty basic and that’s why it’s awesome. It’s classic “old Florida.”

You can easily drink away an afternoon here. The drinks are a reasonable price and service is friendly. Have that first drink at the bar and feel like a local, then take the next one out back and enjoy the water views.

4. Snappers (Key Largo, Mile Marker 94.5)

Oh what a view! Snappers is a seafood restaurant with a large Tiki style outdoor bar right on the water. Plenty of seating and a great view of the water and marina. Fresh seafood and all your favorite tropical drinks to enjoy while you watch the boats go by.

There are three different bars at Snappers. My favorite spot to sip a cocktail is in the brightly painted Adirondack chairs along the walkway at the Turtle Club bar. Unfortunately, the last hurricane through the Keys destroyed this little bar. Hopefully it will be rebuilt soon.

For now, head to the Tiki Bar! It’s the spot for watching the game to enjoying the view. Snappers has an extensive beer, wine and cocktail menu and you can order off the full menu at the Tiki Bar if you’re hungry. The Reef Bar is a small spot indoors, perfect for cool or windy evenings.

Snappers is also a great place for a dinner night out. Obviously you lose the ocean view, but you gain live music from local musicians. And only at a Florida Keys bar will you see the musician playing from a little pontoon boat tied up to the deck. Pretty cool way to add extra square footage.

5. Lorelei (Islamorada, Mile Marker 82)

Another Florida Keys bar with a picturesque sunset view. The Lorelei sits on the edge of the Florida Bay with tons of outdoor seating where you can watch the sunset and listen to live music every night. It’s also a beautiful spot to to enjoy a tropical drink during the day. The waterfront setting is true Florida Keys with tables on the sand and mangrove islands in the distance.

I’ve only been here once and it was packed. Judging by the pictures on TripAdvisor, that’s fairly common, so get there early if you plan on having a drink in your hand by the time the sun starts to set. Plus, happy hour is from 4pm-6pm making it another good reason to get there early.

Grab a seat at the Lorelei Cabana Bar and order a slice of their excellent Key Lime Pie to compliment your Key Lime Colada (one of their specialty cocktails) and wait for the sunset.

You can’t miss it when driving down US1, just look for the giant mermaid.

6. Sunset Grille & Raw Bar (Marathon, Mile Marker 46.9)

Like a mini resort without hotel rooms, this is one of my favorite Florida Keys bars. Right next to 7 mile bridge, we recently stopped in to enjoy an evening at the Sunset Grille & Raw Bar , which is quite the happening spot.

There are multiple bars to choose from and all offer a fabulous view. The indoor/outdoor bar looks over the large swimming pool (yes, I said swimming pool) and the expansive ocean views. Feel free to bring your swim suit and take a dip. Plentiful seating along the bar rail, it’s another perfect spot to watch one of the Florida Keys famous sunsets.

The outdoor pool bar is usually quite busy, so if you can’t find a stool, walk around the end of the bar and grab an Adirondack chair on the sand under the palm trees. There is not a bad seat in the house!

Truly one of the best bars in the Keys with really great food. Now, when I’m driving back from Key West, this will always be a planned stop.

7. Holiday Isle Tiki Bar (Islamorada, Mile Marker 84)

This is serious Tiki. The Holiday Isle Tiki Bar is a large thatch covered beach bar with a great view of the ocean. The Tiki Bar has been rebuilt a few times over the years due to hurricane damage and the resort is now completely renovated.

Once upon a time, this was a real hot spot with a salty vibe. Now it’s a little more resort refined Florida Keys bar. It’s still a laid back atmosphere where t-shirts, shorts and flip flops are the perfect attire. Even though this cool tiki bar has gone through various reincarnations, I still recommend spending a glorious day at the bar, sipping a cocktail and watching the Atlantic Ocean kiss the Florida Keys sand. You’ll almost feel like you’ve left the United States for a Caribbean island.

Their claim to fame is back in 1972 their bartender mixed left over liquors creating the very first Rum Runner.

Along with all unusual statues in the Florida Keys (there are many), the Holiday Isle Tiki Bar has a giant Rum Runner drink statue – which is worth the stop just to get your picture taken with it. Might as well try their signature cocktail while you’re there since it is the home of the original Rum Runner cocktail. It’d be a shame to stop for a quick picture without taking a seat at the bar.

8. Hogfish Bar & Grill (Stock Island, Turn off at Mile Marker 5.1)

I know this is a top ten list about great places to drink, but I also want to mention the Hogfish Bar & Grill serves up amazing food too. I’ve loved everything I’ve tasted. The fresh fish sandwich and stuffed fish dish are both made with Hogfish, which turns out to be pretty delicious. And by “fresh” I mean right off the boat!

It’s an open-air restaurant and bar furnished with large picnic tables under a peaked thatched roof. There’s not much of a view since it’s located next to various dock areas in a marina. It’s off the beaten path and you might have a little trouble finding it, but you’ll get there.

Like most bars in the keys, the atmosphere is completely chill and on the weekends you’ll have a really good time. The live entertainment gets this place rockin’. Try the Key Lime Mojito!

9. Boondocks Grille & Draft House (Ramrod Key, Mile Marker 27.5)

“The largest Tiki Bar in the Florida Keys” is their claim and it is huge. Boondocks is another open-air establishment and offers a ton of seating under thatch as well as on the large patio.

One of the few Florida Keys bars with a proper stage for live music and they bring in a lot of talent to their stage. Live music 5 times a week plus fun nights such as bingo and trivia. Ton of TVs if you want to watch the game and a mini putt-putt course next door.

A nice place and you can have a lot of fun here. Get a pitcher of beer, the Key Lime Martini or their Category 5 Hurricane and spend a few hours under the Tiki. Bring the dog.

10. Islamorada Fish Company (Islamorada, Mile Marker 81.5)

Feel the sea breeze and marvel at the see-through waters from your shaded table or bar stool at the Islamorada Fish Compay . Located right on the main road, this cool Florida Keys Bar is built out over the water with a wide pier jutting out towards sunset.

Showing off beautiful open water views during the day and in the evenings they light up the Tiki torches on the beach giving the ambiance of an exotic tropical island.

The food is a hit or miss and the best way to enjoy the unique vibe of the Islamorada Fish Company is with a few cocktails. I’ve always ordered a fruity frozen drink here because it just feels right. The Pina Colads with a floater is fantastic.

Lots of Tarpon to watch and once in a while a Manatee comes by for a visit. Of course, the Bass Pro Shop is right next door.

We have visited most of these places over the years and think most are great. We also love the atmosphere at Geiger Key and love Hog Fish. We hope to catch up with Jo Mams wherever he’s playing in Jan.

Cool places all, however The Safari Lounge on Lower Matecumbe knocks ALL these places down a notch. Also Gilberts needs to be on everyones “Keys Radar”.

Do not bother with the Hog Fish. Ugh. For a lower Keys experience, go to Half Shell Raw Bar or Schooner Wharf if you want to discover the real Key West.

“The Hungry Tarpon” in Islamorada should def be on this list. We hit it up every time we make it down to the Keys. It’s located and overlooks Robbie’s pier, where you can watch people feed humongous Tarpon while you dine. Amazing drinks and make sure to ask for Tim the bartender. He has awesome stories for days. Hog Heaven is a great time too.

Hi Jimmy! I’ve never been to the Hungry Tarpon but now I can’t wait to check it out. LOVE Hog Heaven. In fact, the top picture of the drink on the picnic table is where I took that photo. I really thought Hog Heaven would get enough votes to be in the top 11, but it didn’t make it. Still a place I love though!

Description

The inhabited islands of the Florida Keys are just one small part of a 100-mile-long strip of shallow water flats, tangled channels and wild mangrove islands separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico. Much of this vast area is untouched marine wilderness preserved as the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and in several wildlife refuges and national parks that lie within the Sanctuary. Your safety is Cool Key West‘s number one concern. In general, sea kayaking is safer than most other outdoor pursuits, even bicycling.

How stable are the kayaks and do they ever tip over?

The tandem kayaks Cool Key West used on Key West Backcountry Safari comfortably hold two paddlers and are extremely stable, much more than solo kayaks. It’s actually quite difficult to tip a tandem kayak over. Capsizes happen to fewer than 1 out of 100 participants. Nearly all capsizes are a result of water fights and other sorts of goofing around.

How long is each activity on the Key West Backcountry Safari?

On Key West Backcountry Safari guests will enjoy 45 minutes of sailing to Key West National Wildlife Refuge, a 60 minute guided kayak tour and 60 minutes of reef snorkeling.

Will I get seasick on Key West Backcountry Safari?

If you have any doubts about becoming seasick on the water, we recommend taking a Dramamine® Motion Sickness Relief tablet the night before your trip. Some people recommend taking it the night before your cruise and then again that morning so you will not feel so drowsy.

What is the age limit for snorkeling?

There are no legal age limits for snorkeling. We have found that age 5 or 6 is a good age to learn the basics of snorkeling, however, it’s entirely up to individuals to make the best choice for their family.

I've never snorkeled before, will I be OK?

First-time snorkelers can be assured of one-on-one instruction and assistance. We find introducing folks to our world very rewarding!

Do I need kayaking experience or will you teach me?

No experience is necessary! Beginners are welcome on all of our kayak tours. Most of our guests have never been in a sea kayak before. Anyone in average physical condition may join a kayak tour. If you can hike or bike, you can paddle our sea kayaks. You do not need any swimming skills either.

The only prerequisite is a healthy spirit of curiosity and adventure.

Regardless of age or skill level you will find that our expeditions offer enough flexibility to make your experience with us safe and rewarding. We will show you proper sea kayaking technique and water safety before leaving the beach. And your expert guides will be with you throughout the adventure to give you pointers and improve your skills.

Can we use our own snorkeling gear?

The snorkel gear we use on Cool Key West tours is high quality and for your protection, the equipment is sanitized after each use. However, if you feel more comfortable using your own snorkeling equipment, feel free to bring it on the tour. Please note, there is no discount for providing your own equipment and we can’t be responsible for any lost or damaged items.

Can I go snorkeling if I cannot swim?

Yes, this is possible, as long as you are comfortable going into the water. All Cool Key West snorkeling tours adhere to strict safety regulations and have been designed to be enjoyed by all.

Your safety is our #1 priority, which is why:

• You will be wearing a flotation device at all times.
• On many tours, there is a stairway from the boat into the water so you won’t have to “jump” in!
• There are trained staff in the water and watching from the boat at all times.

With 6.5 oceanfront acres, stucco arcades and a Spanish tile roof, the resort on the National Register of Historic Places channels the glamour of the Roaring Twenties. The hotel officially opened on New Year’s Eve 1920 and has been a favorite of celebrities and visiting dignitaries ever since. The high-ceilinged lobby has Cypress wood beams and columns and glossy hardwood floors. The ornate sea foam green and conch shell pink Victorian mansion at the southern end of Duval Street is the historic Mansion on the Sea, originally built as a private residence in 1897. Over the years, the mansion’s hosted everyone from Ernest Hemingway to Leonard Bernstein and John F. Separated from Key West by the narrow Cow Key Channel, Stock Island is the area’s last working waterfront and feels more industrial than the rest of Key West. The Perry Hotel and Marina, which opened in 2017, gives travelers unprecedented access to this slice of “old Key West” where longtime Keys families, fishermen and artists reside. There’s nothing old timey about the clean lined hotel with plenty of raw concrete, exposed steel and natural wood. With its location in Stock Island Marina Village, fishing and boating charter possibilities are endless. The hotel’s excellent Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen and Bar (where fresh seafood featured in dishes like cioppino and shrimp and grits comes directly from the working boats on the waterfront) is worth visiting even if you’re not staying at the hotel. Hotel guests can also lounge by the waterfront pool and sip a cocktail by the fire pits at sunset.

What was previously a collection of historic inns across Old Town is now Kimpton Key West. With its range of locations and varying price points, no matter which you choose, each property enjoys a lushly landscaped courtyard pool and Kimpton’s updated interiors in a nautical scheme with a palette of soft blue and cream and Balinese-inspired dark hardwood furniture.

Wander through enough furniture stores and you're bound to run into sleek pieces of wood furniture that manage to look classic but also modern at the same time. Given the design style's appeal, we decided to round up the best places to buy mid-century modern furniture online. We were delighted to find some of our favorite retailers, such as Castlery and Wayfair , have a wide selection of mid-century modern furniture, ranging from lounge chairs to bookshelves . The price of mid-century modern furniture varies by retailer and furniture piece, although you can expect to pay anywhere between a couple hundred for a bedside table to more than $2,000 for a dining table set. 

Best mid-century modern furniture overall: West Elm

West Elm is known best by many as being the premiere place to shop for mid-century modern furniture. Browse their site and you'll find lounge chairs, coffee tables, dressers, beds, dining tables, bookshelves, desks and more in the mid-century style. 

What's more, you can easily find the brand's selection by inputting "mid-century" into the search bar. Scroll through the collection and you'll find many pieces currently on sale, including this mid-century bookshelf with drawer for $200 off and this mid-century media console for $300 off. The latter piece of furniture is made of FSC-certified wood , can fit a TV up to 96 inches and comes with ample storage, including two cabinets and six drawers. 

Best budget mid-century modern furniture: Amazon

Can't afford West Elm's mid-century modern furniture? No problem. Head over to Amazon. The retail giant has mid-century modern pieces at a fraction of the price. The caveat with buying from Amazon is that it's not a dedicated home store the way that the other retailers we listed are, so you may find yourself taking longer to find the piece you want.

Best selection of mid-century modern furniture: Wayfair

Wayfair's inventory is massive, so you have a large selection of mid-century modern furniture to choose from. The quality will often be better than Amazon, and sometimes, you'll find pieces that are more affordable than West Elm. In fact, we've found some West Elm dupes on Wayfair.

Most of the dining tables themselves are more than $1,000, but you can find a couple of options under $700, including this small round dining table , perfect for compact kitchens or dining rooms, for $499. Shopping for a family dining table? We love this extendable option that seats eight. 

Dining sets with chairs are more costly, but they'll save you the time and hassle of having to buy chairs separately. We like this set that comes with an oval dining table and four padded seats. Best mid-century modern bedroom furniture: AllModern 

AllModern offers a smaller selection of furniture than its parent company, Wayfair, but many of the choices are certainly more stylish. This includes mid-century modern furniture. AllModern has mid-century options across furniture categories, but what stands out is the bedroom furniture.
