Barog: A Land of Exquisite Beauty

Barog Kasauli

Literally, wow! These were my words when I first got to know about this majestic town which is located at a distance of 17 km from Kasauli. Brimming with serenity and adorned with pine deodar forests, this place is indeed one of the best sightseeing places near Kasauli. Dolanji Bon Monastery, Suketi Fossil Park, Choor Chandni Peak, Graveyard of Barog, and Barog Camping Grounds are some of the major attractions of this quaint hamlet. However, these places are not just the reasons to visit, the rich history of Barog can also arouse the curiosity of anyone to get to know more about this place.

The town came into limelight in the late 20th century when Kalka-Shimla railway line was in construction. The name Barog came from a British railway engineer’s name who committed suicide during the construction of the same railway line. Barog was an incharge of a tunnel project which was supposed to be built alongside the railway track. However, a mistake was made due to some miscalculation. As a result of this, he got fined and humiliated which led him to end his life.

However, Gurkhas were defeated in the war and the region later came under British rule. At present, it is under the possession of Indian Army and serves as a training centre for the Gurkha region. Inside the fort, there are 180-year old canons that were once used in battles. Apart from exploring the fort, visitors can also indulge in trekking in the valleys located close to the fort.

During this time, the sky turns into a canvas enhanced with hues, a sight which is worth to see. You can likewise appreciate the all-encompassing perspective on the scene from the highest point of Sunset Point.

Sunrise Point

A good way off of 1.5 km from Kasauli Bus Stand, Sunrise Point is a lovely perspective arranged on Lower Mall close to Ros Common in Kasauli. This point was in the past called Hawa Ghar because of the consistent air flows consistently.

The dawn point is about 300m from Ros Common. A total perspective on the dawn can be experienced from the spot. From the sunrise point, guests can appreciate the all-encompassing perspective on the Chandigarh city and the encompassing regions. The rising sun in the midst of the slopes of the Shivalik run adds to the appeal of this spot.

This is a much-adored special case to the, in any case, calm Kasauli. For an unassuming community that it is, the shopping center street gives complimenting alternatives to shopping and eating out.

While most territories in Kasauli are strange, one must not miss this brilliant hustle-clamor of the town. The market is at its energetic best during early nighttimes and a night walk around is energetically prescribed.

Heritage Market

An unquestionable requirement visit place for each shopaholic and foodie. You can get the best deals on keepsakes, garments, woolens and embellishments. Remember to enjoy neighborhood roadside nourishment, for example,  Ban Samosa and Ban Gulab jamun, which are massively well known. This is one of the best place to shop and enjoy variety of food items at various stall available in the market.

Feeling bore and want to get away with city crowds then Kasauli will be the right choice for you. You can easily book your trip to this beautiful place and has a lot of attraction spot. This is why tourists are attracted to this place and come from different parts of the world. So why waste time!!! Let rock and enjoy this scenic beauty.

Incredible places to visit in Kasauli

Christ Church in Kasauli

Summers in India bring unbearable heat strokes and thus Northern India quickly fills up with tourists. The fresh, unpolluted air of the mountains, the caressing cool breeze of early mornings and the long walks on the steep roads make for a perfect holiday. Wondering what to see Kasauli this summer? I’m going to present the must-see places to visit in Kasauli for an incredible mini vacation.

Incredible Places to visit in Kasauli

Kasauli a small hill station in  Himachal Pradesh ,  India  is a choice for a quick getaway for weekends and a short trip to the hills to beat the city heat. So, I present you with the amazing places to visit in Kasauli for refreshing weekend trips.

Places to visit in Kasauli

Manki point.

Manki Point aka “Monkey Point” is nothing but an Indian God Hanuman’ s Temple on the highest point of a hilltop near Kasauli. The Manki Point is not exactly in Kasauli Hill station and you can either hike or drive to the main entry point.

Manki Point lies under the protection of the Indian Airforce (cantonment area) and thus mobile phones are not allowed once inside the premises. From the checkpoint, it is a steep hike which can take up to 20-30 minutes depending on your fitness level. The views from the highest point of Kasauli are indeed worth the effort of taking the hike. Hence, Manki Point qualifies as one of the top places to visit in Kasauli. Although not being able to take pictures can be a letdown, security is security after all.

Route to Manki Point Kasauli

Sunset Point

The panoramic views of the hills with the sun in front of your eyes is the gorgeous Sunset Point for tourists. It is a 20-30 mins walk towards Upper Mall Road amidst all greenery. The entire area is protected by Army and various checkpoints are set up till Sunset Point. Cars can go halfway but no parking is allowed, so walking is recommended. The ideal season for visiting Sunset Point is summer as it will allow you to witness a beautiful sunset. We went in Monsoon, we couldn’t see anything but clouds covering the entire mountain range as you can see in the pictures below.

Kasauli Sunset point in clouds

Christ Church

Established in 1884, the Christ Church is another one of the eminent places to visit in Kasauli. The architecture of the Christ church has a sharp resemblance to Gothic structures . European roots are visible in the interiors of the church as the stained glass in the windows was imported from England.

Don’t miss this church while in Kasauli to take you to the times of British influence in India. The point to note here is that tourists have to remove their shoes before entering the Church. The Christ Church is located right opposite the Kasauli Bus Stand and is easily visible from Mall Road .

Christ Church in Kasauli

Gilbert Trail

One of the most beautiful locations and another one of the wondrous places to visit in Kasauli is the Gilbert trail. The Gilbert trail is a steep pathway taking through nature and greenery to the top of the hills. The path is not only steep but also narrow which is advisable only for those who like a bit of adventure during their vacations.

The Mall Road

The Mall Road is synonymous with almost every hill station in Northern India, and thus, one is also found in Kasauli making it one of the wonderful places to visit in Kasauli.

Kasauli is a small hill station compared to its counterparts Manali and Shimla and thus the Mall road is also smaller. The markets on the Mall roads sell woollens, and wooden materials and also have a few quaint cafes.

A nice way to place to spend the evenings, amid all the hustle of the village. Hawkers selling fresh corn, coffee, and Indian chai cafes right in the centre of the market are the main attractions. When purchasing any souvenirs from here, don’t forget to bargain, as they initially quote sky-high prices. We bought wooden souvenirs and A/C quilts at a reasonable price. Honestly, apart from that, we didn’t find anything worth purchasing from there, as most of the stuff seems imported from nearby big cities.

Roaming on Mall Road never gets old & it’s one of the amazing things to do in Kasauli.

Where to stay in Kasauli

Kasauli being an army base has a lot fewer hotels and thus a visit to Kasauli in the peak season can get tricky. I highly recommend booking the hotels when going in summer and on weekends. We went without booking on a long weekend, but we were lucky to find a hotel on the upper end of Mall Road. That was the last family room available for that weekend. We had seen people sleeping in their cars the entire night because of the availability of hotel rooms. We booked Hotel Puri, which I wouldn’t recommend because it isn’t that par. If it wasn’t among the last few options for a family, I wouldn’t have opted for Hotel Puri. Their unhygienic bed sheets and shady rooms didn’t let the air in.

Some of my recommendations for the best places to stay in Kasauli –

Savoy Greens  – The hotel with spectacular views of the hills. They have facilities like Wi-Fi , an airport shuttle, and in-hotel breakfast as well as a bar also available. Recommended for a couple as one of the best places to stay in Kasauli!

Cottage In Hills  – Cottage in Hills in downtown Kasauli, with views to enjoy your stay. Enjoy their gardens, and home-like stay, with Wi-Fi, refrigerator, microwave oven and groceries delivered. Recommended for a couple who want to stay in a quaint hotel in the hills.

Dippys Hotel  – Liked by couples, for private parking availability, wi-fi, and restaurant in the hotel. A decent 3-star hotel in the mountains with facilities like free toiletries, bathrobe, and slippers too which is rare in a small hill like Kasauli.

Alasia Hotel  – Looking for a hotel with a bar? Don’t look beyond Alasia Hotel . The hotel offers a bar, continental breakfast, and also a garden to enjoy mornings & evenings.

Where to eat in Kasauli

Most of the restaurants are typical North Indian which you will find easily on Mall Road. A variety of restaurants are there in the Tibetan Market and mall road. Hop on any café and you will feel refreshed after sipping Indian chai in the cool weather.

I love Kasauli! What a charming little hill station with gorgeous walks 🙂

Yes, it indeed is a beautiful place 🙂

I am from Delhi and our favourite nearest hill station has always been Kasauli!! Have so many childhood memories which you revived through your blog!! Loved it!

So glad you liked the post and I could revive some of your best memories 🙂

This looks fantastic. We recently visited Rajasthan and I wanted to make it further north SO badly, but it didn’t happen. Next visit!!

Rajasthan is beautiful and so is North India 🙂 maybe next time!

Wow, Kasauli looks really nice. Thinking of India, I would never imagine such a peacefully looking spot with a christian church, but it does look lovely. Thank you for the share

There are a lot of Churches in India because of its British influences 🙂

I remember reading about Kasauli in an old book published by the Indian Railways. I was in school then but the name stuck with me. I haven’t been to Kasauli yet but I soon will. From your words and photos, it appears enchanting.

It is indeed 🙂

US 50 bridge closed west of Gunnison due to safety concerns

Travel advisory.

US 50 bridge crossing the Blue Mesa Reservoir near Dillon Pinnacles that is now closed

Gunnison and Montrose Counties  — A safety closure is in place for a bridge on US Highway 50 located west of Gunnison. The Colorado Department of Transportation is closing the bridge at the urging of the Federal Highway Administration and state bridge engineering experts due to the findings of an ongoing safety inspection, which identified anomalies in the bridge on Thursday, April 18. The closure is in place between US 50 Mile Point 131 (intersection with Colorado Highway 92) and MP 138. Local traffic will be allowed through the closure point to reach residences. Motorists should use COtrip to plan an alternate route. See below for more information about the northern and southern recommended alternate routes. CDOT has set up an incident command and will coordinate with local, state and federal agencies in order to respond as quickly and effectively as possible. CDOT has been conducting a special inspection for high-strength steel bridges for the Blue Mesa bridges as required by the Federal Highway Administration. This inspection was required because of known issues with similarly constructed bridges elsewhere in the country. A defect was observed during an early investigation of the bridge at approximately Mile Point 136.3. CDOT immediately brought in a second inspection crew with resources to perform another method for testing whether the defect posed a safety hazard on the bridge. The second inspection took place on Thursday, April 18.  CDOT is continuing to assess the safety of the bridge and to quickly determine options for interim and permanent fixes – and will keep the public informed as soon as more information is available. The bridge closure is located between Gunnison and Montrose. It is located east of the US 50 Little Blue Creek Canyon project, which is currently in a planned winter shutdown.

Recommended Alternate Routes

This closure will create a significant detour for commuters between Montrose and Gunnison. The recommended detour route for through traffic is via Interstate 70 to the north or US 160 to the south. CDOT understands the inconvenience that this creates and is rapidly evaluating options to improve options for residents, businesses, and travelers on the western slope. The northern route is 354 miles and requires approximately six hours of travel time. The southern route is 331 miles and requires nearly 7 hours of travel time. CDOT and local partners are exploring whether it is feasible at this point in the season to clear local seasonal routes that may be able to significantly reduce the detour time for local travelers.

Know Before You Go

Travelers are urged to “know before you go.” Gather information about weather forecasts and anticipated travel impacts and current road conditions prior to hitting the road. CDOT resources include:

  • Road conditions and travel information: COtrip.org
  • Download the COtrip Planner app: bit.ly/COtripapp
  • Sign up for project or travel alerts: bit.ly/COnewsalerts
  • See scheduled construction lane closures: bit.ly/laneclosures
  • Connect with @ColoradoDOT on social media: Twitter , Facebook , Instagram and YouTube

Remember: Slow For The Cone Zone

The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
  • Be patient!

Download the COtrip App!
