Trek for the beginner

Trek on Vasota jungle was my first ever trekking experience. I went with a group of 18 people, from Mumbai. We left on a Friday night, reached Bamnoli (35kms from Satara) by Saturday morning. Bamnoli is situated on the bank of lake Shivsagar of Koyna (river) dam, is the nearest village accessible by bus to visit Vasota/Tapola/Nageshwar temple. Public transport (bus) is available from Satara. In Bamnoli, you need to register and book a boat at tourism office. They charge nearly Rs.4000 per boat (max 12 person capacity) and the boatman will act as guide. If you are a solo trekker, may be you can join with other group to reduce cost. The tourism office start at 8AM, they allot a number and announce when the boat is ready. The boat ride takes nearly 1.15hrs to reach Vasota base point. At Vasota forest office, produce the registration slip, and show your bags to count number of plastic items in it. They let you go ahead with some cash deposit. On return, if you fail to produce all "plastic" items you carried, they deduct money from the deposit. Since Vasota is a protected forest area, with wild animals in it, the state has taken precaution to avoid plastic litter in the forest. You begin trek from here to cover length of around 3.5kms thru the forest. Walk way is very clear, no worry of getting lost (unless you want to). Except few sections most of the path is filled with rocks/stones. You cross two small streams, but shoes won't get wet. Although the elevation is gradually increasing, some places require higher steps to climb. It took around 1.40hrs for me reach the top, couple of regular trekkers from our group took 1.15hrs., all people reached max in 2hrs. At top, you get the breathtaking view of Western ghats (Sahyadri), surrounded by forest and lakes below. It was sheer pleasure to see the peaceful nature, and cold wind sweeping across. We spent around 1hr by finishing lunch and taking pictures. Our guide (the boatman) took us to Echo point, and a place where a Peshwa queen's palace once existed (all you can see now is base stone structure!). We started decending from same way we climbed, took me 1.15hrs to reach base. On our way back stopped at one of the streams, some took bath but beware of leaches. We drank the purest of natural water from the streams. It sure better than any packaged drinking water. Once you reach the base, don't forget to collect your deposit, and ride back to Bamnoli. Level of trek is easy-medium. Key points to note: The Bamnoli village is very safe, but public toilets are in very poor state, just few (around 10 nos ) and long queues. Since they get crowd only on weekends/holidays local authorities are not looked upon this. Local restaurents cater food for the trekkers, as well keep bags/backpacks for small charge. Carry enough water (at least 2ltrs) while trekking, you won't get any fresh water once you leave Bamnoli.

Best time to visit is during winter seasons. The trekking requires endurance, not very high though. There are no washrooms near by if you reach there at night. Try to reach early morning.

Trekkers must do this trek. You will start hiking after the wonderful boat ride for an hour. It will take around 1.30-2hrs to complete the trek. Tips: 1.Carry sleeping bags. You can sleep in the temple nearby so that you can start trekking early in the morning(8A.M). 2. Carry glucose pack or energy bars 3. Carry sweater when you are visiting in winter 4. Trekking in Monson/ rainy season is prohibited.

Vasota or Vyagrahgad fort ranks at the top of our trekkers list due to the jungle experience it offers & peace, serenity & awesome views of koyna backwaters & plains & valleys. We left from Pune & camped in Satara in the night & took early morning 5.45 am first bus to Bamnoli which took one hour. You need to get prior permission from forest department to visit Vasota since it is part of Koyna wildlife sanctuary & also need to inform them the names etc of all people who are arriving. Your bags & all belongings get checked at the base since you are not allowed to carry liquor or any firecrackers which can be a hindrance to the animals & natural habitat of the jungle. Also your group needs to be at least 8+ since the cost of the boat is around 2000 INR irrespective of the no. of persons in the boat. So you can easily hire one if in a group. The boat journey is around 1.5 hours which is a scenic treat in itself. Surrounded by lush mountains & greenery on both sides, as you traverse through the koyna dam backwaters, it's a Mesmerizing experience. The water is very clear & the sight of reflecting sunrays through the waters is awesome. Lots of memorable photos can be taken here. Once the boat reaches Bamnoli base camp from where the actual trek starts, fill up your water bottles in the water streams there, since there's very little water on top. There are 2 forts, old Vasota & new Vasota. We can visit new Vasota, but not old one because of very high risk traverse & no exact trail. We climbed the jungle to see a very rare Hanuman & Lord Ganesh together temple & a small pond. The forest is so dense that at many places, sunrays get fully blocked due to the tree cover overhead. While climbing, be careful to stick to your group & beware of any wild animals like bear, wild cows etc. & maintain silence to keep the natural surroundings as it is. Then we encountered an old Shiv temple from where we got excellent views of lake & way downwards. The major attractions for sightseeing on the fort are Babu kada, Nageshwar Peak, Mahadev Temple and if you are planning in Aug-Oct,you can enjoy awesome views of Kas-Pathar the valley of flowers and ofcourse Tapola. Also, if you happen to visit Vasota in monsoons, be careful of the several leeches on the fort which stick to your skin & extract blood. Hence, wear thick & hard jeans etc & ankle high boots etc to avoid their bite. After visiting Vasota fort, the route to Nageshwar peak/cave is equally thrilling & splendid with a narrow walkway having deep valley on one side & thick bushes on the other. We even found marks of bull (Rangava) on the way. We covered this distance within 90 minutes. Then we came near the huge Nageshwar cave. The cave is very clean and big. It can hold 20-30 people easily. Shivling is placed here. In last few years the cave and path which leads to cave is built and protected well. The path to the top of Nageshwar is a 50 ft steep climb after the cave where Nageshwar kund is also located. At Chota Nageshwar point, one can see Nageshwar cave and surroundings view. Whole path to Nageshwar which is not covered by forest and which is most thrilling can be observed. We spend some time to chill in cool breeze and sneaking Sahyadri. You can also see the point where boats drop trekkers. We got to know that from end of backwater it takes 8-10 hours to reach Koyna dam. The other attraction Babu kasa is simply amazing & awe inspiring. It is very similar to konkan kada of harishchandra gad. Very steep fall of 1000 and more feet. Very beautiful. Behind that there is Old Vasota which is now unreachable and closed for trekkers. During return journey to the base camp, again there is dense forest & foot trails of wild animals can be seen. On returning to the base, we swam in near the lake banks, but mud was there, so we abandoned it. The boat came on time & during the return journey through koyna backwaters, we stopped near an amazing & brilliantly carved Ganesh temple on the way. The Ganesh idol, the temple architecture, the ambience & peaceful atmosphere here was outstanding. After taking darshan, we embarked on our way back to Bamnoli, again clicking amazing pictures in the boat ride. Then after catching a bus to Satara, we had dinner in a nice non-veg restaurant which was very tasty. The great memories of this beautiful trek will always be cherished in our mind & soul. Some more information regarding the trek & any help required: 1. Night Stay,Permissions to visit fort and food can easily be arranged at Bamnoli. Tents available at Bamnoli. No stay allowed at Met-Indavali or fort. 2. Ample boats are available to Vasota from Bamnoli. Costs around Rs.2000 /- for 12 people. 3. 91-231-2542766 is Western Maharashtra forest office number where you can inquire about accessibility to fort. Friends, this is a must visit trek for every avid trekker. Don't miss it.

Trek at vasota comes with many surpises..to start need to do a 2 hours boating. The boat journey is awesome sceanary and mountains beside. Two options to visit vasota and do trekking. Vasota or nageshwar temple.not recemmend to do both places in a day. But we did both in a day.first nageshwar and then vasota fort . Route is tough it takes lots of energy. Then went for vasota. Dead defying and amazing depth comes along with route from nagehswar temple to fort vasota. Must try for trek lovers Difficulty level: moderate to hard.

Vasota fort trek is designed for trekkers who are looking for a thrilling adventure that gets their heart racing and rewards them with beautiful gifts of nature. If you are willing to go for the Vasota trek from Pune, you can take the NH4 from Pune to reach Satara, which is at a distance of 110 km from Pune station. Travellers living in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, and other nearby locations can also easily join in for the adventure.

Vasota fort is a fairly ancient hill fort built at an altitude of 1,171 meters near Bamnoli in the Satara district of Maharashtra. The fort is located within dense forests and valleys of Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary. The fort is situated on the banks of the Shivsagar lake and is surrounded by water on three sides.

The Vasota fort also has rich historical significance for the Marathas. It was built by Kolhapur Shailahara Raja Bhoj II during the Bhoj dynasty and was later seized by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji Maharaj chose to call the fort “Vagrahagad” which literally meant the fort of the tiger. Staying true to the name, he also intended to habituate tigers in their natural habitat surrounding the fort.

The fort was essentially seized to use as an area for defence. The fort of Vasota has played an important role in the Indian National Movement under the leadership and guidance of the powerful Maratha warrior – Bajirao Peshwa. Later, in an attempt to strike a blow to the Maratha Empire, the British destroyed the fort completely. However, when you visit the fort, you will be able to make sense of the marvellous architecture and witness the ruins that stood the test of time.

In modern times, Vasota jungle trek has become more prevalent instead of the fort itself. Trekkers who are willing to go for an exciting nature walk amidst the lush green forests often prefer going to Vasota and experiencing the best of nature. A number of trekkers opt for this trip across the year because of its scenic beauty and high endurance levels that set their adrenaline gushing!

The Vasota jungle trek also provides you with the option of boating in the lake surrounded by the lush green forest and hills. Although trekkers make their way to the fort and jungle all year round, a monsoon trip is always favoured by most travellers. During the monsoon season, rains make the forest glow in a different light altogether and make it even more beautiful.

If you are looking to spend some time in the lap of Mother Nature and forget about all your stress, you should definitely come for the Vasota jungle trek. You can rest assured that the trip will revitalize your mind and body, replenishing your energy before you go back to the hustling of your city life.

Vasota Fort Trek in Sahyadri Tiger Reserve

Old Vasota Fort

After three weeks in Ahmednagar, we came to Kasturi’s hometown Satara earlier this week. As we were looking at options for a day hike, Vasota Fort was on the top of the list. Kasturi always wanted to go there, and after  Kalsubai , a day trip to Vasota Fort seemed doable with Kavya.

Vasota Fort (elevation 3600 ft / 1100 m) is in Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and is part of Sahyadri Tiger Reserve. It is a moderate hike at 6 km out and back with about 500 m vertical, but the ferry ride to the trailhead makes it unique. Vasota fort was built in the 12th century by Bhoja II of the Shilahara dynasty. It is also known as Vyaghraghad (Vyaghra meaning Tiger).

We decided to make a day trip to Vasota fort on November 16 and hired Omkar, a family friend, as our driver for the day. Earlier in the year, he had completed Narmada Parikrama – a 3000 km circumambulation of the Narmada River in 30 days. I was looking forward to chatting with Omkar and hearing about his experience.

We left Satara at 6:30 am and made our way to Bamnoli. Bamnoli is one of the several villages along the Koyna Reservoir-Shivsagar Lake and is about 40 km from Satara.

vasota trek photos

On our drive to Bamnoli, we saw signs for Kedareshwar Boat Club (near Munawale), and it claimed to offer the shortest boat ride to Vasota Fort. But, we didn’t know much about it, so we continued to Bamnoli as it has long been the base village to get to Vasota Fort. We arrived around 8 am, just as the Bhairavnath Boat Club office was about to open.

Bamnoli - Vasota Fort Trek

It costs INR 3700 (~ CAD 63) for the ferry ride to Vasota and back. Omkar was going to join us on the trek, so it was just four of us. Considering the cost, the guy at the boat club suggested that we wait for more people to arrive to share the cost. The ferry can take a total of 12 people.

vasota trek photos

We had a leisurely breakfast at a nearby restaurant. Unfortunately, even after an hour, we didn’t have company, so we went ahead and booked the ferry for Vasota. Madhavrao Jadhav was our ferryman, and he was also our guide for the trek. Although we didn’t need a guide, we didn’t have an option.

vasota trek photos

Two guys who worked at the Range Forest Office at the trailhead for Vasota Fort joined us. As part of their job, they get a free ride on the ferry.

Vasota Ferry Ride

It was a noisy but still enjoyable (not for Kavya) one-hour ride to Vasota boat station.

Vasota Fort Trek - Ferry

Hike to Vasota Fort

We checked in at the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve forest office and paid INR 570 (~CAD 10) that included our entry fee (INR 30/person), boat parking (INR 150), guide fee (INR 200) and Tiger Foundation fee (INR 100).

vasota trek photos

One ranger checked our bags and noted the number of Plastic/Nalgene bottles we were carrying. We paid INR 500 as a deposit and would get it back once all the bottles were accounted for on our return.

Vasota Fort Trek

The hike to Vasota Fort starts just beyond the forest office. Our guide suggested staying on the trail to ensure we don’t get any Leech on ourselves. The first km of the trail is relatively flat, and there are two water sources in this section.

Vasota Fort Trail

After the second stream, the trail starts to climb gently. The trail is well maintained and clean, which unfortunately is a rarity on popular Sahyadri treks these days. I hope other parks/sanctuaries in Maharashtra adopt the practice of checking plastic bottles/packages and ensuring that the trails remain trash-free. I won’t even mind the mandatory guide fee if the guide can keep the hikers in check and impart some civic sense.

Vasota Fort Trek

We passed two trail signs for Nageshwar Sulka (cone-shaped peak) around 2.6 km (as per GAIA) from the trail junction. Omkar and I had talked about potentially going to this point if we had time. But, our guide said that the trail was closed due to a recent landslide.

Vasota Fort Trek

Soon, we were at the last section of the trail, which was in the open. We had a clear view of the forest and the Koyna Reservoir-Shivsagar Lake. It was amazing to look back at the terrain we had covered so far.

(New) Vasota Fort

After hiking steadily for an hour and twenty minutes, we arrived at the fort’s Maruti Temple.

Vasota Fort Trek

We continued our hike to the North end of the fort, passing another temple and arriving at a beautiful lookout. From here, we had a clear view of Nageshwar Sulka and Choravne village to our West and the forest we had hiked through to our East.

vasota trek photos

Then we retraced our steps and made our way to the South end (also named Babu Kada) of the Vasota fort. The view from here was equally impressive. Just as we were admiring the landscape, our guide mentioned that we were on the New Vasota Fort and the Old Vasota Fort was atop the mountain in front of us. Unfortunately, the trail to Old Vasota Fort is now closed.

Vasota Fort Trek - Old Vasota Fort

Kavya was hungry by now, and we found a shaded spot for our lunch break. A few more groups arrived at the fort as we were having lunch. Our guide said that there are 100+ boats docked at the Vasota boat station on a busy day. Given our experience at Kalsubai, we had chosen a weekday to do this hike to avoid the crowd.

Back to Bamnoli

After a 30-minute lunch break, we started our descent.

Vasota Fort Trek

It took us just over an hour to get back to the forest office.

Vasota Fort Trek

After collecting our deposit, I stepped in to see the exhibits about wildlife in this region. One of the charts highlighted eighteen different types of snakes. Thankfully, we only saw some monkeys and didn’t come across any snakes.

Vasota Fort Trek - Range Forest Office

On our ride back, it took us about an hour and fifteen minutes to get back to Bamnoli.

Vasota Fort Trek - Boat Ride

It was only 4 pm, but we were hungry after the hike and decided to have an early dinner at the restaurant next to the boat club office. The food was delicious.

Bamnoli - Vasota Fort Trek

It was 7 pm by the time we got back to Satara. In the last 12 hours, we had driven for about three hours, had a two-hour ferry ride, hiked for close to four hours with amazing views and spent the remaining time in a beautiful village – Bamnoli. It was one of the best days of our India trip so far.

Omkar and Narmada Parikrama

Omkar did this Parikrama for religious/spiritual reasons. He walked for 10-15 km a day for the first few days and slowly ramped up the distance over three months. Towards the end, he did 50+ km a day. Omkar shared some fantastic stories about this unique journey. If you are interested in knowing more about Narmada Parikrama, read this  post  by Jubin Mehta.

“ Walking along the banks is such a powerful experience that words often fall short. It is like the tao. The moment one tries to communicate the essence, it is lost. “ – Jubin Mehta

Hi Shashi, you seem to be having the time of your life in the Sahyadri! While we are being drenched by what the weather pundits are calling “a parade of storms” and “atmospheric rivers”, you are basking the warm autumn sunshine there!! Your post on Vasota brought back fond memories of my trek there with my wife and a few friends in November 1985. We combined it with a trip to Kas Lake and it was a total 5 day Mumbai-Mumbai trip by train, ST buses and of course the boat across the Koyna lake. Very few people would trek in that area in those days and we were so very fortunate to see that area. Back then it had not been declared a tiger sanctuary, but I do remember seeing distinct claw marks on the trunk of a tree while we were walking through the forest! Will send you some old photos from those days to you on email. Take care and stay safe! Cheers and my best regards to Kasturi and Kavya.

Your stories are always amazing. Kasturi tells me of how Kaas Pathar (Plateau) was during her childhood and now the extent of commercialization is disturbing. I can’t even imagine what it must be like to go to Vasota back in 1985. I would love to see some of your pictures. Thank you for sharing them.

Cheers, Shashi

Hi Shashi, Did you encounter any tigers?

I enjoyed reading about your treks. The lake and the view from the hill top look amazingly calm. Keep your posts coming.

We didn’t. Based on a news report from 2020, there are eight tigers in the reserve but they move around the reserve. Given the hike we did is quite popular, I believe Tigers and Leopards would stay away from this area.

Best trek information .Excellent work

Sanjay – Thank you for reading the post and your feedback.

Vasota Fort Trek (also called Vyaghragad) is located in the Satara district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It was famously defended by Tai Telin a mistress of Pant Pratinidhi a killer of the fort when he was captured. Vasota fort is attributed to the Kolhapur Shilahara Raja Bhoja II (1178–1193) of Panhala. Vasota always remained with Marathas, Shirkes & Mores in the 16th century & then incorporated in Swarajya by Shivaji Maharaj in 1655 during the conquest of Javli. Shivaji Maharaj named the fort “Vyaghragad” (Vyaghra – means tiger), owing to its difficult natural defense. After Shivaji Maharaj, the brave Maratha Bajirao Peshwa carried on the Swarajya mission of ousting the Mughal invaders from our country. Checkout Our Other Events in Mumbai

Vasota Fort Trek and Lake Side Camping

Vasota Fort is one of the famous forts for trekking in the Sahyadri Mountains, it is also known because of its wilderness and beauty. Vasota Fort is also known as "Vyaghragad" (Vyaghra - means tiger). Situated in the evergreen forest of Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary Vasota offers the best experience of the Jungle Trek with Lake Side Camping.

vasota trek photos

Vasota Fort protected by dense jungle, it is inaccessible except for the long and arduous trek. Vasota Fort offers awe-inspiring views of Koyna Backwater. Walking in the dense jungle would be a lifetime dream for so many of you. Isn’t it? For me, it definitely is.

With having some similar experience on my jungle trek to Andharban , I was looking for other jungle treks. I had heard of the Vasota Fort jungle trek earlier so I made it a point to add on my trip to explore Satara.

How to Reach From Mumbai?

There is multiple base village among those two are very popular Bamnoli and Tapola. But the problem with these two locations it's too crowded. So 10kms from Bamnoli is an unexplored base village Furus - less crowded and crystal clear Koyan lakes backwater to enjoy lake swimming. From Furus, one needs to take a boat ride to reach the starting point (Met Indavali) of the Vasota Fort Jungle Trek. There is no direct connectivity to any base village from Mumbai. But Satara has good connectivity from Mumbai and from Satara you can reach the base village easily for Vasota Fort Jungle Trek. From Satara, it would take you 2 hrs around 60 kms to reach our base village Furus. Direct buses do operate between Satara and Furus every 2 hrs, the route passes through the famous Kaas Plateau .

vasota trek photos

Bus: Satara is very well connected by road from Mumbai. The frequency of buses is quite high, and usually, bus leaves in the night from Mumbai. It will take around 6-7 hrs to reach Satara from Mumbai.

Train: Satara has good rail connectivity from Mumbai, Pune and the rest of the country.

Private Car: If comfort is your priority and travelling in a group go by car. Furus is well-connected to Mumbai by roadways it will take around 7 hours via Mumbai - Bengaluru Highway.

Where to Stay?

Camping at Vasota Fort is not allowed. You have to stay or camp at the base village. There are a few homestays and camping site along the Koyna Lake in Furus. If you want to enjoy a clean crystal Koyna lake view, less crowded and enjoy the lake swim on a chilled morning. Do check out Range Adventures Holiday Resort, Furus ( Please drop a mail at [email protected], if you need any help for booking ). The tent that I carry during the trek is Quechua Camping Tent MH100 . It has enough space for 2 people.

Day 1: Lake Side Camping & Walk Around Satara

Breakfast @ chandravilas.

One of the popular spot for breakfast in Satara is Hotel Chandravilas Bhuvan you can have a Maharashtrian style breakfast of misal pav or puri bhaji. Hope you have a stomach for spicy food.

Sajjangad Fort - The final resting place of Saint Ramdas

Post breakfast before starting your journey to Furus make a visit to Sajjangad. Sajjangad fort (meaning “Fort of good people) is located around 12-13kms from Satara city. It is the final resting place of Sant Ramdas, a saint and social reformer in 17th century India. His teachings and works written in books such as Dasbodh are read and followed by many people even today in the state of Maharashtra. It is possible to reach the top of the fort by vehicle. From there one has to climb around 200 steps to reach the gate of the fort.

Sajjangad Fort: Chatrapati Shivaji Mahadwar

There is two entrance gate of the fort, first known as “Chatrapati Shivaji Mahadwar” and second as “Shree Samarth Mahadwar”. The fort is open for devotees from sunrise to sunset. Being a place of Samadhi by Samarth Ramdas Swami, the spiritual guru of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, it is a holy place.

Sajjangad Fort: Shree Samarth Mahadwar

The maintenance of the fort and the Samadhi (final resting place) of Ramdas is taken care by Ramdas Swami Sansthan, a trust which has existed since the time of Shri Ramdas Swami. The trust provides free lodging and food for the devotees of Samarth Ramdas Swami. People can notice while climbing to Sajjangad that there are many different small temples of Lord Hanuman.

Samadhi Of Ramdas Swami and Lord Ram Temple

There is a Samadhi (final resting place) of Ramdas Swami and a beautiful lord ram temple. This area is very peaceful than any other holy place. There is a way thru the temple to go on the backside of the temple. Hanuman temple is located on the left side corner. The moment you come out of the temple on the backside, you will get a stunning view of dam water (Urmodi Dam), mountains, valleys, Waterfall (Can be seen only during monsoon) & sunset. I was stunned to see such a spectacular impressive striking views of nature.

Urmodi Dam: Aerial View From Sajjangad Fort Near Hanuman Waterfall/Temple

History: What Happened In Past

The fort was made by Bahamani Emperors in between (1347-1527). After that in (1527-1686), it came under the Adilshah dynasty. Mughal king defeated Adilshah and the fort came under the Mughal rule. Shivaji Maharaja conquers the fort and it was renamed Sajjangad after he requested Shri Ramdas Swami to set up his permanent monastery.

On The Way To Sajjangad Fort

Lunch @ Sajjangad R estaurant

There is one small local restaurant at Sajjangad parking. You need to order in advance as they need at least 30 min to prepare your meal. Pithle Bhakri is very tasty whereas the rest of the food was average. After our lunch break, you can proceed towards our Lake Side Camping site in Furus which was our ultimate destination. Post lunch lets head towards our final destination for Vasota Fort Jungle Trek, the base village - Furus.

Camping @ Koyna Backwater

Imagine sitting by a campfire surrounded by a landscape of crystal clear lakes and layers of cold evening weather. It just set to be one of the most memorable ones. To witness the amazing sunset on a crystal clear Koyna Lake, try to reach the base village before 5:00 PM. After the sunset, the sky will be pitch black and the mountains will disappear and you would see the bright stars in the dark sky. Enjoy Barbeque followed by yummy dinner over bollywood music witnessing amazing moon rise from the mountains and in no time the lake around the campsite will glitter like a diamonds. The cold breeze along with the moonlight will definitely make the night a memorable one. Now its time to sleep, tomorrow will be a big day for us.

Day 2: A Trek Within The Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary

Early morning just around sunrise at Koyna Lake

You have to get up early to experience the early morning view of Koyna Lake from your tent. For experience take a plunge into the turquoise chilled Koyna Lake. Let me tell you the lake will look inviting but its extremely dangerous if you can't swim, so be careful. After a nice refreshing swim in the cold lake and recharging hot and spicy breakfast, its time to move towards your final destination - Vasota Fort Jungle Trek

Base Village to Met Indavali (Starting Point)

After a delightful breakfast starts your ferry journey to Vasota Fort - latest by 7:30 AM. Two hours long boat ride may sound tedious but believe me, when you look at the crystal reflections of islands on the water and when you observe the purity of nature, you are bound to fall in love with those islands. Koyna Backwater Lake is also known as Mini Kashmir. Even after the commercialisation of Jungle treks to Vasota Fort, the locals and the tourist often take care of the location by keeping it clean and green.

Koyna Lake - The route was scenic beauty

As you approach the island that leads to Vasota Fort, you could clearly see the mountain range of Vasota Fort. The jungles on these islands are always dense and lush green, regardless of the seasons.

Mountain Range Of Vasota Fort

At the start, you will find a forest department office where you will need to pay all the fees (Boat parking, Forest Entry, Guide, Camera). Also, a counting of plastics being carried along will be done and a security deposit of ₹500 will be taken. The deposit will only be returned if the plastic count is the same on your return. A very good initiative to keep the mountains clean.

Trekking Through dense forest of Vasota

Met Indavali to Vasota Fort

It's 09:30 AM when I started my trek passing through dense jungles. Hardly a 10 minutes of trek you will find a Hanuman Temple and running water stream which you can, of course, enjoy on a way back. Sunlight could barely pass through that dense forest cover. Time passed by so quickly and within around 2 hours, you can easily make it to the top.

Trekking through dense forest of Vasota

The fort is mostly in ruins. It comprises of three main sections – Old Fort, New Fort and Nageshwar cave temple. There is a temple of Lord Hanuman at the entrance. The other point of interest is Babu Kada which is a huge U shaped cliff that lies next to the Vasota Fort. From this point, one can view the Old Vasota Fort which is closed for trekkers due to the presence of wild animals. From the top, you can clearly see the beautiful lake formation between the mountains. The mountains have their glory as well.

Babu Kada: A huge U shaped cliff that lies next to the Vasota Fort

Babu Kada is very similar to Konkan Kada. Very steep fall of 1000 and more feet. Very beautiful. Behind that, there is Old Vasota. Which is now unreachable and closed for trekkers. On the way to Babu Kada there were two tanks full of drinking water.

On the way to Babu Kada there are two water tanks

For Babu Kada, you need to take left from the top Hanuman Mandir and the new fort is on the right of the Hanuman Temple. With Panoramic views from every side, Vasota fort offers unique majestic views of the diverse mountain range. With snake-shaped lakes from one side to edgy mountains on the other. You can even spot the boats parked by the lake from the top, though you may need a sharp vision for that.

Hanuman Temple On The Top Of Vasota Fort

Enjoy the views of the surrounding regions from the top, enjoy a photo session from every possible corner and angle from the Vasota Fort. Have your carry refreshment/ lunch before you start with the descend as you need to be back to the base before 4:00 PM since the base village is roughly two hours long ride and you need to be at the base village before sunset. The trek back to the boats is fairly fun as it's all descend.

The view from Vasota Fort looking at the twisted Koyna Lake

While returning the sunset transformed the green lakes into the calm reflective grey ones and as time moves towards sunset the sky will turn all indigo purplish-blue.

Sunset Transformed the green lakes into grey ones

So finally the dream of trekking through the dense jungles of Koyna wildlife sanctuary was fulfilled. Still wondering how beautiful it would be just after the monsoon season. At the base, site rest for while enjoying hot tea before moving back to Satara City for your return journey to Mumbai.

Best Season To Visit Vasota Fort

The trek remains closed from mid-June to mid-October. The best to visit is just after the monsoon i.e. October to December. Summers aren’t a bad time either to visit Vasota fort as the surroundings remain green throughout the year.

Listen To Me:

Carry some ready to eat food, atleast 3-4 litres of water and a mat/bedsheet to rest. There aren't any food options available during the trek at Vasota Fort

Talk to the native villagers gently and give respect to them, because you are their guests.

Wear full sleeves T-shirt and Pant, that will protect you from the wild insect. I ts a jungle, we are bound to bump into these wild insects like leeches. If possible carry a walking stick also.

Though the northern part of India is often considered the best destination for adventure, the southern part does not lag behind. The Western Ghats that run for about 1600 km over an area of approximately 140000 sq km are perfect to indulge in some adrenaline-pumping activities.

A busy schedule is no reason to deprive the thrill seeker inside you of adventure. If you are a resident of Mumbai or any of its nearby cities or towns, or spending your holidays here, then you can take this Vasota jungle trekking tour to spice up your life. This short, 3-day sojourn is the perfect opportunity for you to get the adrenaline rushing through your veins without having to take a big break from work.

While there are numerous destinations within the massive Western Ghats for a trekking and camping venture, Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is an ideal option. The landscape of the park is defined by dense jungles, scenic backwaters and pristine lakes. A couple of days here are perfect to have fun and return with a new energy.

Beginning with pickup from Mumbai, the Vasota Trek brings you to Bamnoli and further to Met Indavali. This is where the adventure truly begins as you commence the on-foot excursion. The journey first takes you to the imposing Vasota Fort, which offers awe-inspiring views of the Western Ghats from an elevation of around 3842 feet. It presents a brilliant photography opportunity as you can click amazing photos from up here. The activity schedule on the first day of the tour includes a boat ride on the charming backwaters of the Koyna River as well.

Descending from the fort, you reach the base camp, situated on the banks of a placid lake. This camping experience will offer you myriad opportunities to indulge in fun games. The memories of the quality time you spend here with your loved ones will remain with you forever. On your way back home, you get to spend some time on the alluring Kaas Plateau. The charm of the plateau will leave you spellbound. Owing to its magnetic beauty, it has earned the name, the Plateau of a Million Flowers.

The Vasota jungle trekking and lake side camping experience concludes when you reach Mumbai on the third night of the excursion. Needless to say, this will be one of the most refreshing holidays of your life. The best thing is that this tour does not demand that you take a long vacation; you can go for this wonderful venture during one of your long weekends. Another good aspect is that the trek is graded moderate; therefore, almost anyone with reasonable fitness can undertake it.

Day 00: Mumbai to Bamnoli The Vasota Jungle trekking adventure begins with a late-night pickup from Mumbai, from where you travel to the peaceful village of Bamnoli.

Day 01: Bamnoli to Met Indavali | Boating | Trek to Vasota Fort Post arrival in Bamnoli, meet the rest of the team and relish breakfast. Thereafter, proceed towards Met Indavali village, where the Vasota Trek begins. But, before you hike, you will enjoy a boat ride on the pristine reservoir of the Koyna River.

After boating, continue the journey to Met Indavali, and on reaching here commence trekking to the famed Vasota Fort. Also called Vyaghragad, the centuries-old fortress is mostly in ruins now. Situated at an altitude of about 3842 feet above sea level, it commands mesmerising views of the surrounding landscape.

Spend some time exploring the fort and the various temples here, and after lunch begin the descent to the base camp.

On reaching the camp site, rest for some time before enjoying dinner. The fun continues even after the sun sets as you can indulge in a plethora of activities at the campsite. Later, enjoy a good night’s sleep in your tent under the star-lit sky.

Day 02: Excursion to Kaas Plateau |Met Indavali to Mumbai Wake up to the refreshing sight of the lake, and then freshen up. Following breakfast, you can indulge in numerous games on the shores of the lake. Enjoy group activities, and have fun with your friends and family.

After these activities, begin the second section of the Vasota jungle trekking and lake side camping tour by embarking on your journey back to home.

On your way back, you will pass through the scenic Kaas Plateau, also known as the Plateau of a Million Flowers. During the monsoon season, colourful wildflowers of numerous species blossom to give the landscape surreal beauty.

Savour lunch on the picture-perfect plateau, and later continue the journey; enjoy evening tea on the way. The amazing excursion ends when you arrive in Mumbai.

The Vasota fort is attributed to the Kolhapur Shilahar chief Bhoja II (1178-1193) of Panhala. In the 16th century, Vasota was always held by the Marathas, Shirkes and Mores.

Vasota Fort, also known as Vyaghragad, is an ancient hill fort located near Bamnoli village in the Satara district of Maharashtra, India. It stands tall at an elevation of around 3842 ft. and is nestled amidst the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, offering a thrilling trek through dense forests and stunning views of the Koyna backwaters. The fort is believed to have been built in the 12th century by Bhoja II of the Shilahara dynasty.

The Vasota Fort trek is considered to be an easy to moderate trek, making it suitable for beginners with a decent level of fitness. The total distance of the trek is approximately 6 km (out and back) with an elevation gain of around 500 meters. While the initial part of the trail is relatively flat, the later sections involve a gradual climb. There are no technical climbs or challenging patches on the route.

Vasota Fort aka Vyaghragad

Vasota Fort aka Vyaghragad Vasota Fort straddles the Ghat line, protected by a bear-infested jungle. It is inaccessible except for a long and arduous trek. It has two forts, an old one and a newer one. It is possible to visit the new Vasota Fort through thick jungles.

At Bamnoli (Base Village) regular motor ferry services are available that take us to Met-Indavali from where we can walk on the western shores of the lake. Proceed along an arm of the Koyna Lake to the west. The route is now thickly forested with no human habitation. Climb through the dense forest by a tricky route to reach the top of the fort.

Trekking Route and Details

The trekking route from Met Indavli village to Vasota Fort is about 6 km long and takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete. The trek is considered to be of moderate to difficult level as it involves a steep and rocky ascent through the dense forest. The trek requires prior permission from the forest department as it passes through the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary. The trek also requires a guide who can lead you through the forest and tell you about the flora and fauna of the region.

The trek starts from Met Indavli village, where you can register your name and pay the entry fee at the forest office. You can also hire a guide from here who will accompany you throughout the trek. You can then board a small boat that will take you to the other side of the lake, where the actual trek begins.

The trek begins with a flat walk along the lake for about 15 minutes. You can enjoy the views of the lake and the hills on both sides. You can also spot some birds and fish in the water. You will then reach a small temple dedicated to Nageshwar , which is believed to be one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva . You can take a break here and offer your prayers.

The trek then becomes steep and rocky as you enter the forest. You will have to climb over boulders, rocks, and roots as you make your way through the forest. You will also have to cross some streams and waterfalls on the way. The main attraction of Vasota Fort is the panoramic view of the Koyna backwaters and the surrounding hills. You can see the blue water of the lake contrasted with the green forest of the hills. You can also see some islands and peninsulas in the lake that add to its beauty. You can spend some time here admiring the view and taking pictures.

You can then descend back to Met Indavli village by following the same route. You can then take a ferry ride back to Bamnoli village and return to Satara by bus or car.

Moderate difficulty, breathtaking views – perfect for adventure seekers. Remember, the journey from Pune takes around 4-5 hours, so plan wisely!

History of Vasota Jungle Trek

Nestled in the Sahyadris , Vasota Trek boasts a rich past dating back centuries. Initially under the rule of local dynasties, it was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji in the 17th century and renamed “ Vyaghragad ” (Tiger Fort) due to its strategic location. Later, the British heavily damaged the fort in the 19th century. Today, the trek offers a glimpse into history via remnants like the Nageshwar Cave Temple and fort walls, while immersing you in the beauty of its dense jungle and stunning views.

The best time to visit Vasota Fort Trek

Choosing the right season for your Vasota Trek adventure depends on your preferences for weather and experience:

Winter (October – February): Ideal season ! Cool, dry weather with clear skies makes for comfortable trekking and stunning panoramic views. However, temperatures can drop at night, so pack accordingly.

Summer (March-May): Warmer with occasional rain showers, offering lush greenery. Prepare for increased humidity and potential afternoon thunderstorms. Note that the fort closes during extreme heat periods.

Monsoon (June – September): Strictly AVOID ! The forest becomes dense and slippery, while heavy rains and leeches pose safety risks. The authorities also prohibit treks during this season.
