Our Pick of Winery Tours on the Mornington Peninsula

Whether you’re commemorating a big birthday, celebrating a milestone, or just looking to treat yourself and your friends to a memorable day, a winery tour is always a good idea. Open air, delicious fresh food, views of rolling hills and vineyards, good mates, and wine. What’s not to love?

If you’re toying with the idea of a wine tour in Victoria, the Mornington Peninsula is the ultimate region to explore. Renowned for its stunning vineyards, incredible local produce, and world-class wines, the Mornington Peninsula is home to some of the best big-name and boutique wineries in the country.

Not all winery tours are made equal, so we’ve collated a list of the best winery tours on the Mornington Peninsula. From private luxury experiences to cycling trips, this list has a tour for every palette.

Winery and Lunch Tour with a Private Car

horse riding wine tour mornington peninsula

If you’re looking to go all out and splurge, the Winehop Winery and Lunch Tour with a Private Car is our top pick.

Unlike other pre-arranged winery tours, with this tour you’ll get to choose the four wineries you visit. You’ll be chauffeured in your own private car too, which is why it’s a little pricier than the other options listed. The tour includes tastings at all four wineries, lunch, and a complimentary glass of wine.

You’ll also be picked up and dropped off from your chosen location, so all you need to do is get dressed in your winery best! Pick up time is around 9:30am and drop off is around 5:00pm, meaning you’ll have plenty of time to leisurely roam around each of the venues.

This tour requires a minimum of two people and a maximum of seven people, so it’s perfect for an anniversary surprise or a day out with friends.

Cost: $285 per person ($220 deposit payable on booking)

Food and Wine Taste Trail

horse riding wine tour mornington peninsula

If you’re not overly fussed about a private car, the Explore Australia Food and Wine Taste Trail offers a classic winery tour experience.

It’s slightly cheaper, at $189 per head, and you’ll be experiencing the best of the Peninsula. The day begins with a wine tasting at Point Leo Estate, straight into another tasting at the Rare Hare at Jackalope.

Then, you’re off to Monalto for your third wine tasting and lunch, before making your way to St Andrews Beach Brewery for a taste paddle.

The day concludes with stop offs at Murray’s Lookout and the Peninsula Bathing Boxes for some incredible views and insta-worthy pic opportunities.

There are several pick-up and drop-off points, so head to the Mail Exchange Hotel, Her Majesty’s Theatre, the Regent Theatre, the Travelodge Hotel Southbank, or Geelong Fishermans Pier.

In our humble opinion, this is the ideal wine tour experience for travellers and larger groups.

Bottomless Brunch by the Bay

horse riding wine tour mornington peninsula

For Hen’s and Buck’s parties and birthday celebrations, the Tour Local Bottomless Brunch by the Bay is the perfect activity.

Don’t be fooled by the name — it’s an all-day event, so you’ll have loads of time to soak up the Mornington Peninsula (and its wines).

This is a private group tour, so you and your guests (minimum of 6, maximum 25) will have the luxury midi-bus all to yourselves. This means you can choose your pickup location too (bonus!) as long as its within 40km of the Melbourne CBD or South Eastern Suburbs.

Your entertaining tour leader will take you on a journey through the Peninsula. You’ll begin by enjoying bottomless mimosas with brunch at The Cafe by the Bay, where you can wander the beautiful Mt Martha Foreshore.

Then, you’ll enjoy a signature gin tasting and grazing platter at the Gin Distillery, before heading to The Red Hill Winery for a cellar door wine tasting.

In the afternoon, you’ll travel through Red Hill and relax at the stunning Pt Leo Estate, before returning to your designated drop-off location.

While this one is a little pricier, it’s definitely worth it if you’re after a luxurious experience.

Peninsula Hidden Gems

horse riding wine tour mornington peninsula

While the big-time wineries are definitely must-sees, it’s the smaller, boutique wineries that deliver the most personal experience.

The Grape Explorations ‘Peninsula Hidden Gems’ tour focuses on boutique, family-run wineries off the beaten track.

On this tour, you’ll likely have the chance to meet the winemakers themselves and receive an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at all things wines and vines.

This intimate, personal experience will allow you an insight into the stories behind the wineries, which you won’t get with larger scale venues.

You’ll be treated to a two course lunch and wine tastings, as well as luxury private transport.

This eight hour tour is available all seven days of the week, and includes pick up and drop off from the location of your choice.

Cost: $175 per person

Actually, there are a great number of different horse riding experiences on the Mornington Peninsula and here are just three of the best:

Gunnamatta Trail Rides

Do you want that classic horse riding experience?  You know the one you imagine with you cantering down a windswept beach like something out of a romance novel…ok, well not quite like that but horse riding on the beach? Yes, of course you do.

Well, Gunnamatta are the guys to see about that experience.  They will take you on beautiful coastal bush tracks and spectacular beaches.  They have 75 well trained horses for every level including those who have never ridden before and their facilities are world class. Our kids particularly love this activity and beg to visit every time we stay in on of our beach cottages or holiday home rentals here on the Mornington Peninsula.

This is a great one for the kids.  This Mornington Peninsula Adventure Park is set on 200 acres with views of green pastures and horses grazing – it’s like a little town with Bass Strait in the background. The theme that makes up the ‘Ace-Hi Experience’ is one of ‘The Old West’. Since its opening Ace-Hi has always portrayed a western theme and this has helped them establish themselves as a truly unique and exciting adventure theme park.

The little town consists of a number of themed facilities including two homesteads, authentic wagons & an old red rattler train carriage. The sheriff’s office & jail house together with the livery stable located in the same area. The beautiful sandstone chapel restaurant makes the perfect dining hall.

For young infants one parent is required to hold the infant steady on the pony while another parent leads the pony around the track.

Pony rides are available for children from 10am-12pm & 1pm-4pm weekends & school holidays. Bookings are not essential, however if you intend to pony ride then please ring ahead to check on the availability. Pony rides are only $10 per ride & all tickets can be purchased from the Chapel restaurant.

An Epicurious Journey On Horseback Through Australia’s Mornington Peninsula

horse riding wine tour mornington peninsula

“Please sign this form,” instructs the blonde woman at the reception of Horseback Winery Tours . “It basically ensures you realize you’ll be drinking wine while riding a horse.”

While I’ve been horseback riding many times, I’ve never done it as a wine tour. My horse, Twisty, is one of the more docile horses, which allows me to enjoy the rolling vineyard hills and country landscape as we trot along to some of the area’s most respected wineries. Passing acre upon acre of grape vines is the perfect way to work up an appetite for the area’s signature Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays.

Our first stop is T’Gallant , one of the more well-known wineries on the Mornington Peninsula. The rustic cellar door has their wines whimsically written on chalkboards around the shop, and the group gets to try a variety or whites, roses, reds and dessert wines, all made in European fashion with an Australian twist. Winemaker Kevin McCarthy is a natural artist, producing vintages that are “artisan and pure, reflecting the character of the maritime Mornington Peninsula.”

While their 2006 Ophelia Sparkling Pinot Noir/Chardonnay Vintage is full and rich with fruit, their 2010 Tribute Pinot Grigio is created in honor of the Alsatian winemakers of France, with flavors of pear, almonds, green loves and a mushroom finish. Personally, I fall in love with their 2011 Romeo, a bright red wine with a plump palate and sweet raisin finish.

“This wine is a blend of Shiraz and Muscat that resembles a port and goes great with cheese,” explains our tasting guide. “Remember, the foods you eat will affect the flavor of the wine.”

The progressive tasting ends with a sample of their 2011 Juliet White Moscato, a straw-colored wine with a nose of fresh fruit, flowers and ends with a crisp finish.

Tastings at Green Olive at Red Hill.

Once the group is satiated, we begin our journey to the next winery, Green Olive at Red Hill . This farm-to-fork operation not only makes vino, but also produces olives, herbs, vegetables, jams, relishes, olive oils, chutneys, marmalades, dukkah, salts and in-house roasted coffee. In terms of protein, free range Isa Brown hens produce farm-fresh eggs, while their onsite bred Wiltshire Sheep help them to make handmade lamb sausages, salami, meatballs and salt cured lamb. These products pair perfectly with their Kelpie Bridge wines, which include a 2010 Chardonnay, a 2008 Shiraz and a 2011 Chardonnay Pinot Noir Sparkling.

While they may not produce a lot, what they do make is high quality. According to winemaker and owner Greg O’Donoghue, they work to create wines that reflect the vineyard as an expression of the soil, climate and proximity to the ocean.

“We want to grow very small parcels of grapes and turn them into good wines,” he says. “We use minimal chemical intervention. We also use different composts that are sourced locally with a major enthuses on healthy soil – healthy vines.”

This becomes clear once the tasting begins, as each vino has something special to bring to the table.

While their Kelpie Bridge 2010 Chardonnay is an easy drinking wine with flavors of oak and a definite citrus twang on the nose. Moreover, the Kelpie Bridge 2008 Shiraz has smokey, charred fruit flavors, chewy tannins and a spicy finish.

Getting back on my horse, I’m thankful at how well-behaved Twisty is. Although my buzz has made me a more confident rider, I’m nervous it may have also affected my coordination. As we ride, however, the natural beauty of the area seems to sober me up and I make it back to the barn without incident.

Montalto's Vineyards

Just because the horseback riding is over, however, does not mean the wine drinking is, as the Mornington Peninsula is home to myriad boutique wineries. My growling stomach brings me about five minutes up the road to Montalto. The upscale restaurant resides in a rustic space set on 60 acres of vineyard, ponds and sculptures. Because the walls of the restaurant are floor-to-ceiling glass, diners can stare off at the perfectly manicured lawns and rows upon rows of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay while sampling meals made with onsite and locally sourced ingredients. In fact, the restaurant and winery boasts an herb and vegetable garden, fruit and nut orchard, olive trees and berry garden. With each menu item, you’ll get a perfectly paired wine suggestion.

“With your seared scallop entree the suggested pairing is a 2010 Montalto Single Vineyard ‘Hawkins Hill’ Chardonnay,” explains our server. “With your main course of duck breast, I recommend the 2011 Motalto Pennon Hill Tempranillo.”

Their wines are produced with care as owner John Mitchell ensures each varietal is a true expression of its terroir.

“It’s about letting the environment in which the grapes are grown shine through in the wine,” explains Mitchell. “We do this by keeping our yields low and our viticulture and winemaking inputs low. We let our vines strike a natural balance, with sensitivity to their environment.”

All wines are made using sustainable viticulture practices, using no irrigation or plant sprays and fertilizing the soil with compost, which becomes obvious in the honest flavors. While the Chardonnay is ripe with generous notes of quince, peach and nectarine, the Tempranillo is young and approachable with gentle tannins, red cherry and a hint of oak. Each pairs perfectly with the selected dish, decisions of genius epicures.

As the sommelier, a jolly man from Venice, comes to refill my glass, I put my hand over it.

“I think I should slow down,” I say. “I’m getting a wine belly.”

He laughs, pointing to the forming pouch on his own stomach. “This is not fat. It’s memories.”

Peninsula Hot Springs

Although already relaxed enough to fall asleep and have delicious dreams of tapenades and single vineyard wines, I continue my journey of inner peace. Local Charles Davidson adds to the relaxing atmosphere of the community with his Peninsula Hot Springs . While he originally designed the property to help the locals relax, he loves welcoming travelers to experience pure tranquility.

For $25-$35, visitors can spend the day hopping from hot spring to cold spring, each natural bicarbonate pool full of minerals like sulfur, sulfates, sodium chloride, boron, magnesium and potassium. Many of the pools assist with ailments like arthritis, skin conditions, high blood pressure and issues with the lymphatic system. For an added benefit, there is an onsite spa, Zen Chi massage machines, Turkish baths and massaging thermal mineral showers as well as classes like sunrise yoga and meditation.

While there are myriad pools to choose from, I make my way up the paved trail — past the mediation platform, cave pool and reflexology walk — to the top level pool overlooking the entire peninsula. As I slowly submerge myself in the soothing minerals, my sore muscles instantly loosening, I stare out over the vineyards, farms, trees and rolling green. I’m completely immersed in relaxation and beauty. It’s hard to believe I’m less than two hours from the city of Melbourne , consumed in Australian wine country culture.

Peppers Moonah Links

Accommodation

For those staying overnight on the Mornington Peninsula, one accommodation that perfectly represents the culture of the area is Peppers Moonah Links Resort . With an expansive links golf course, luxurious accommodations in natural tones and an eco-friendly philosophy, this is a great option for the conscious traveler.  Their onsite restaurant features a creative menu paired with local wines and beers as well as ingredients sourced from their onsite herb garden and the surrounding area. For rest and relaxation, indulge in the Endota spa’s signature “Drenched” treatment, where you’ll be covered in a custom blend of hot aromatherapy oils, sweet hone and  natural clay before being rinsed with water to “wash away your worries.” At night, bring a bottle of wine back to the room and soak in the deep bathtub overlooking the vibrant green golf course and rolling hills through floor-to-ceiling glass.

A FUN AND UNIQUE HORSE RIDING EXPERIENCE

Our family (kids 13 and 15) hadn't been horse riding before and the beach ride was a great introduction. The staff were great and explained things very well, and the horses were lovely :) I had originally planned to book a 1hr ride, thinking that would be enough for a first time, but the 2hr beach ride was perfect (ended up 2.5 hours) - enough time to get comfortable walking and trotting, and experience both trail and beach. Highly recommend it, great holiday experience with teens.

An absolutely fabulous experience, unmissable if you are visiting the Mornington Peninsula. Our 2-hour private beach ride was gorgeous, with helpful friendly guides and really sweet horses. Our family loved every minute, from the slow walking on the stunning beach to the exciting trotting through the bush trails. Thank you!

My son and I did the St Andrew’s Beach trail ride yesterday .. it was wonderful .. beautiful trail walk and the beach was stunning .. we were matched up with our horses ..Diva and Bullseye felt safe in the capable hands of Karly and Robyn .. who were both very professional and lots of fun.. I have ridden in the past but not for a long time .. my son had never been on a horse and was quite nervous but he loved it .. highly recommend for first-timers ❤️

My partner and I had the most amazing morning at Gunnamatta trail rides. They were very accommodating and made us both feel very comfortable having never been horse riding before! The instructors were lovely and we got great photos on the beach! Great experience, highly recommend.

Everything is nice, except the weather is way too hot. Horses are very calm and controllable, even beginner can ride well. And instructors are really helpful. They teach us how to ride horses easily and also take care of horses. All the way to the st Andrew beach, the view is spectacular. Amazing experience!
