ESL teaching at refugee centers, children's ministry

Servant Life partners in New York City to send American teams on short term missions experiences. Our mission partner there is an outreach ministry to unreached immigrant people groups in New York. Most of the people ministered to come from closed countries where missionaries and evangelism are not allowed. Presently, they oversee two evangelistic ministry centers: one geared toward Muslims from West Africa, and one which focuses on Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs of South Asia. Servant Life teams will serve with this partner by hosting children’s and youth day camps, with the hope of sharing Jesus Christ with Muslim students.

Our NYC mission partner focuses on meeting the spiritual, physical, and social needs of the Muslims in their target neighborhoods. At the two ministry centers, they have many classes and services. Their missionaries lead ESL & citizenship classes, computer classes, youth and teen programs. They also host other special events in the summer and around holidays, which serve as platforms for evangelistic presentations. The next stage of their ministry involves starting small Bible study groups, individual discipleship sessions and, eventually, church plants among the Muslim converts in New York.

What will my team be doing?

While you are in New York City, one of your primary ministry opportunities will be serving in their ministry centers to teach ESL to refugees. You'll also engage in children's ministry or possibly park outreach in these ethnically diverse communities. During your time on this trip, you might have the opportunity to minister to Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs from different countries around the world, people coming from places like South Asia and West Africa. Enjoy a free day on your trip where you can also explore the city.

What does a general weekly schedule look like?

Saturday. Travel day. Arrive and get settled in. Orientation for the week ahead.

Sunday. Free day. Worship at local church, sightseeing, etc.

Monday - Thursday.  Ministry days: ESL classes, Bible clubs, park outreach, kids ministry, etc. One afternoon includes a tour of a foreign house of worship (such as mosque, temple, etc.)

Friday.  Travel home. (Note: For around $55 per person, you can stay an additional day to have another day of sightseeing.)

What does my cost include?

Transportation in NYC. From the moment you land at the airport (LGA) until the moment you leave, we will help you get everywhere during the week. Your trip cost includes a weekly metro pass which will be our primary means of transportation. Teams choosing to fly into JFK will have to pay an extra $20 per person to cover the cost of train tickets from JFK to your place of lodging.

Housing. Your team will sleep in bunk bed style accommodations with access to hot showers and bathrooms.

Meals.*  Breakfast is included every morning, and lunch is included on ministry days (Monday - Thursday), but you are responsible for your dinners and lunch the other days. Our ministry team can recommend some great local options.

T-Shirt.   Every participant gets an awesome mission trip t-shirt.

Pre-Trip Training Material. We provide training sessions, trip overview documents, assistance from our team of mission trip experts, and communication with in-country missionaries to make sure your group is fully prepared for your trip.

Pre, During, and Post-trip Devotionals.   This 4-week printed missions journal will help every team member grow and encounter Christ.

Airfare is not included in the trip cost, but will be taken care of by Servant Life's travel agent who gets humanitarian rates and often free baggage. You may book on your own if you prefer to do so, but we ask to approve the itinerary first.

Worship/Warfare Week NYC (groups & individuals)

After more than twenty years, Worship Warfare Week (WWW) is still bringing hope and joy to the parks of NYC. WWW is a time of intercession for the city, with prophetic and spontaneous songs flowing from live public worship on the streets. It’s an action-packed and rewarding week of fun, praise, worship, dramas and powerful interactions with many tribes, tongues, and nations as we declare among the peoples that the Lord reigns (Ps 96). Partnering with volunteers, churches and teams, we utilizes worship, drama, dance, personal testimonies, face-painting, and Prayer Stations to engage this great city with the powerful Gospel of Jesus. This NYC missions trip is open to youth groups, families, college-age groups and individuals.

Since the year with COVID-19, we have not been able to host this outreach.  We will evaluate from year to year.

Global missions: brazil (groups & individuals).

Women are finding freedom from prostitution. Bible studies now take place in the brothels. Men weep and repent of their unfaithfulness. Backslidden pastors and  church leaders who find themselves on the run or in the streets are strengthened to follow Jesus once again. Lives are being changed; both those who go on the trip and those whom we serve.A very powerful work is going on in Brazil, which we ourselves simply marvel at. Its only explanation is GOD!

Since 1997, Street LIFE Ministries has facilitated a two-week global outreach, focusing on Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Music and drama are used to engage men and women at the bus stop, rehabs, favelas, center city, brothels, etc. in order to share the hope and grace found in Jesus. Whether addicted, homeless, living in prostitution, or simply longing for more in life, all are embraced and encouraged toward our great God. Local partners follow up with those we meet to connect them to healthy communities. You can reach those on the streets of Brazil too!

Testimonies

“At first I was quite apprehensive about taking my youth group to New York City for a mission trip. My fears were unfounded, however Street Life Ministries did a fabulous job of giving us a wonderful experience in safe and controlled settings. I had great expectations of what God might do in my kids lives if they were really challenged to step out of their comfort zones and to take a stand for the Lord. I was not disappointed!”

Bill Ackerman, NH

“This week has been very stretching and I’ve gained a lot that I will take with me for the rest of my life.”

Lexi Beachy, OH, age 17

“This week God did an amazing work in my life. I completely surrendered my life to Him and gave everything up for Him. I really praise Him for that because for so long, I had been just going through the motions but didn’t really have a genuine relationship. It’s a new beginning for me and I praise Him for that.” Chelsea Nette, IN age 20

serving on a mission trip to New York City

New York City, located in the Northeast of the United States, is the most densely populated city in the country with a population of over 8 million. Often referred to as ‘the city that never sleeps’, it is known for its many skyscrapers like the Empire State Building, Central Park, and the broadway theatre in Times Square. Holding major financial, commercial, and cultural power, it can easily be considered the world’s capital.

However, there are many challenges as 18% of New York residents live in poverty. A lack of affordable housing has caused a significant increase in homelessness within recent years. 1.2 million people in New York City are food insecure, making up 50% of food insecure people across New York state. Additionally, the average meal cost is twice as high as the national average of $3.25. (New York City Council, 2023) Go on a mission trip to New York City!

The 3 S's in New York City

mission trips to new york city

This week, we had the opportunity to lead mission trip volunteers in New York City hailing from Massachusetts and Washington state. It was a privilege getting to serve alongside such awesome groups, and the week was wonderful! Most of the projects we worked on throughout the week were with the Salvation Army, Experience Mission’s biggest ministry partner in New York.

Urban Mission Trips

While you've probably heard of the Salvation Army before, there is so much more to the organization than the thrift stores and soup kitchens it's famous for. The Salvation Army was founded in London in 1865 by William Booth. At the time, the local church was welcome only to the wealthy and prominent people in the community.

It was turning a blind eye to the poor, addicted and broken, and acting more like a social club for the rich than as a place of worship for all. Outraged by this blatant disregard for the command to love our neighbors, William Booth and his wife Catherine left the church and started the Salvation Army. What began as a social movement, quickly grew and expanded across the world.

The Army focused on sharing the gospel of Jesus by addressing the most important human needs, "The Three S’s"—soup, soap, and salvation.

Urban Mission Trips

After meeting a person’s immediate physical needs (soup) and restoring their dignity (soap), the Booths could effectively share the message of Christ. Today, the Salvation Army is active in over 120 countries around the world, and the gospel is still the driving force behind every ministry of the organization worldwide.

With a surplus of ministries, including soup kitchens, kids’ day camps, and Bible studies, the Army continues to bring glory to God each day, with the motto “Doing the most good.” Mission trip volunteers have jumped right into these ministries, leading Kids Club in the mornings and helping out with the soup kitchen in the afternoons. We have seen firsthand the blessing the Salvation Army is in this urban community and are expectant for what the Lord will continue to do through the people here. As you consider where you might serve on mission trips in the future, please pray for the city of New York and for the Salvation Army’s efforts to reach the lost, broken, and undignified in their midst.

Collette Konkel

Darlene konkel, kristen ogle, tyson stout, are you ready to make a change.

Is your heart stirring for more, but you just aren’t sure what that looks like? We get it, the tension of living with one foot in heaven and one foot on earth is tough. But what if we could live every day like Jesus and the disciples did so long ago?

The Bible isn’t just a storybook, it’s an action plan that exhorts us to go and serve and discover how to live every day with hearts beating for what God is doing on this earth.

We wanted people like you (and us for that matter!) to have the opportunity to experience Heaven’s heart for the nations.

All it takes is a YES in your spirit to answer the call of what you know God’s called you in your heart to do. Are you ready for a change? It’s time to make an impact and activate your passions!

INSTAGRAM FEED

The cost of your trip covers your food, lodging, Adventures t-shirt, journal, ministry expenses, international health insurance (if applicable) and other associated costs.

For mission trips in the U.S., you are responsible for your round-trip airfare/transportation to the trip location and transportation during the mission trip. For overseas trips, you are responsible for your round-trip travel/transportation to the city that corresponds to your location. Adventures will provide ground transportation upon your arrival.

Participant minimums vary trip to trip. Check with your Missions Representative for your trip’s minimum.

We are not doctors and have no medical training so we are not qualified from a medical perspective to say you should or should not get certain vaccinations. We suggest that you determine which vaccinations you may need by visiting the   CDC website   or consulting your local travel health specialist and reviewing their recommendations based on the country(ies) you will be visiting. Some countries require a Yellow Fever Certificate to enter, so pay particular attention to that.

You may or may not choose to receive all the vaccinations recommended by the CDC or your physician. It is your personal decision what vaccinations you receive, but we recommend you seek a medical professional’s advice concerning that decision.

Do not purchase your airfare until you are directed to do so by your Admissions Representative. If a trip cancels due to lack of interest, Adventures will refund all money paid to Adventures but is not responsible for airfare and will not refund it.

Your Mission Leader will be wearing an Adventures t-shirt, similar to the one you will receive prior to your departure date. You will be sent additional information from your Mission Leader directing you to a central meeting location.

On the field, lodging varies per location. You may be provided a bunk bed or cot or you may be asked to bring an air mattress to sleep on the floor of a local church. Males and females will be separated for lodging. You will receive more information regarding your housing arrangements prior to your trip.

Yes, however accommodations vary by location and it may not be in a traditional shower. You will have access to clean water.

You are welcome to bring your cell phone to take pictures, use as alarm clock, an ipod, etc. However, your cell phone may or may not have reception in overseas locations.

Please evaluate your reasons for bringing phones or ipods on this trip. You are on the trip to minister to others, to serve God, and develop a deeper relationship with God. Phones and other electronic devices may be a distraction to what God is trying to tell you.

That being said, we also realize phones can be great ministry tools! We want you to take pictures and video of your trip. And don’t forget to tag them with #adventuresinmissions when you post them to social media. Please note: Adventures is not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged electronic devices.

How much spending money you bring depends entirely on your personal spending habits and financial situation. Remember, all your meals will be covered by Adventures. So, extra personal money would be entirely at your discretion.

Remember when you’re on the field in ministry, you represent God, Adventures, and local missionaries. Modesty is the key in guiding decisions of what clothes to pack; a good rule of thumb: when in doubt, don’t bring it. A general packing list and our dress code will be provided for you..

Be prepared to cover up tattoos or remove piercings if the host cultures/ministries find them offensive. If this is necessary, your leaders will let you know this before you get in country.

For information on applying for a passport for the first time, visit this  website  or make an appointment at your local post office. Generally, it takes approximately 4 – 6 weeks from the time of application for you to receive your passport. We must have your passport information before airline tickets are purchased so please get your passport ASAP. Sometimes it may take longer than 6 weeks to receive your passport, so apply now.

Generally, Mission Leaders are adults who have led or participated in previous Adventures trips, and some Mission Leaders are Adventures staff. During your trip, your Mission Leader will be the liaison between your team and the ministry host, coordinating daily ministry schedules. The Mission Leader also facilitates nightly debrief sessions, encouraging your team to respond to what God is doing during the trip. Our goal is for you to have contact with your Mission Leader roughly 1 month prior to your trip.

We at Adventures In Missions take the responsibility and care of our participants very seriously.

The reality is the world can be an unsafe place. That truth is not limited to overseas travel. While we cannot guarantee safety, safety and security is a top priority for our programs. We set protocols to minimize risk while expanding each student’s exploration of God’s Kingdom.

Our staff monitors safety concerns and issues around the world, including organized protests, political uprisings, medical alerts, and natural disasters. We maintain active communication with our international contacts and will change locations if we believe the risk level in an area is no longer appropriate for our participants.

A deposit of $75.00 per person is required to secure each participant’s space on the mission trip. The remaining trip balance will be due in two equal installments. The first payment is due approximately 6 weeks days prior to your trip start date and the second payment is due approximately 4 weeks prior to your trip start date. Please refer to our Financial Policy in your online profile for specific any additional financial deadlines and policies.

Discover NYC In Comfort: A Guide To New York City Bus Tours

New York City bus tours unveil the mosaic of cultures, history, and vibrancy that define the Big Apple. This city, alive with endless energy and tales at every corner, offers a journey beyond the ordinary. From the towering skyscrapers reaching for the skies to the hidden gems in the city’s historic neighborhoods, New York presents a canvas painted with strokes of diversity, resilience, and innovation. It’s not just a city; it’s a world of its own, awaiting discovery.

Get into the heart of New York’s cultural scene with  discounted Broadway tickets  from Visit NYC. We bring the allure of the theater within your reach, offering deals that open doors to mesmerizing performances. Witness stories unfold on stage, where emotions run high and talents shine bright. Our Broadway experiences promise a show and a journey into the soul of New York’s theatrical world.

Best Time to Take a Bus Tour in NYC

The sights of New York are not limited to a season or a time. But some moments bring out the best in the city. Warm spring days and crisp fall mornings often offer the perfect balance of comfort and clear skies, ideal for a bus tour that will take you past historical highlights and modern marvels alike. During these times, the city sheds its extreme heat and cold for a pleasant day of sightseeing.

For those willing to wrap up warmly, winter brings its charm. The streets are less crowded, and holiday lights frame the view from the bus window – this is a quiet time to contemplate the city’s architecture without the usual hustle. It’s when you can appreciate the true structure of the city, the bones beneath the flesh of everyday rush.

Night Tours to See New York City Lights

There is something about New York at night – a certain magic that daylight can’t capture. The city buzzes with different energy after sundown, and night bus tours are an excellent way to witness this transformation. The city’s famous buildings light up like stars against the night sky, and you see the true liveliness of New York.

These tours can offer a fresh perspective on familiar sights. Times Square’s neon lights seem to glow hotter, and the quieter streets of downtown take on a dignified grace. On a bus, you are privy to an unobstructed view of it all as the city’s nightlife comes alive around you. It’s a visual treat, an absolute shouldn’t-miss experience.

Themed Bus Tours for Every Interest

New York has a tour for every type of traveler, and bus tours in the city are no exception. Themed tours are unique trips planned around specific interests – food, film locations, or historical landmarks. You could spend a morning nibbling through New York’s culinary routes or an afternoon following the fictional footsteps of your favorite TV show.

Film aficionados will be thrilled to follow a route showcasing iconic movie scenes in real-life settings. On the other hand, history buffs can be whisked off to sites steeped in the city’s past, complete with tales of bygone days. These tours are created not just to show but also to tell – narrative journeys guided by themes that take you beyond the mere view from the window.

Each of these themed explorations offers more than the sum of their stops – they provide stories, tastes, and sights that stick with you, providing a richer understanding of the diversity and depth of New York. They’re specially tailored snippets of the city, delivered on the move.

Tips for a Comfortable and Enjoyable Bus Tour

A bus tour in New York City promises adventure and new sights, but comfort and enjoyment don’t just happen. They require a bit of planning. First, it’s wise to check the weather before your tour. The city’s weather can shift suddenly, so dressing in layers allows you to adjust to changes throughout the day. Comfortable shoes are a must, too, in case you want to hop off at an intriguing location.

Remember to pick seats that suit you best. If you love to capture moments, a seat on the upper deck of a double-decker bus might be your best bet for unobstructed views. However, if you’re sensitive to the sun, you might prefer the sheltered lower deck. Bringing along water and snacks can keep energy levels up without pausing the tour for refreshments.

How to Combine Bus Tours with Other NYC Attractions

New York City bus tours offer a comprehensive overview of the city, but pairing them with visits to specific attractions can deepen your experience. A smart strategy is to review the bus tour route in advance and note any stops near attractions you’re keen to explore further. Many bus tickets offer hop-on and hop-off options, allowing you the flexibility to explore an area on foot and then continue your journey later.
