Luxury Cruises to the British Isles

From legendary landscapes to a rich history, there’s so much to explore on British Isles cruises. Discover iconic sites like the White Cliffs of Dover and the mysterious wonders of Stonehenge. Follow in the footsteps of the Beatles in Liverpool. Journey to Dorset’s Corfe Castle, one of the country’s most picturesque ruins.

Shop for Waterford crystal in Ireland, and kiss the famous stone at Blarney Castle. In Scotland, learn the secrets of whisky, cruise the still waters of beautiful Loch Lomond, and explore the imposing Inveraray Castle. Wherever you visit on our European cruises to the British Isles, you’ll discover green, rolling landscapes, sleepy rural villages, dynamic cities, and layer upon layer of history. Whether your interest is music, medieval history, historic pubs, or fashion, you’ll find it here.

British Isles Cruise Highlights

Majestic castles.

Experience the storied history of the British Isles through the region’s famous castles. From Dover, travel to London and marvel at the 11th-century Tower of London, home of the Crown Jewels. In Kent, see dreamy, 900-year-old Leeds Castle, where Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon lived. Edinburgh Castle is a must, perched imperiously on Castle Rock, while 15th-century Stirling Castle whisks you back to the time of the great Scottish kings and queens.

Pub Culture

Pubs are endemic to British culture, and every village has at least one, where you’ll find a bucolic garden, a roaring fire in the cooler months, a fine array of beers on tap, and often, gourmet “pub grub”. Chat with locals in Ireland over a pint of Guinness, or sip cider in the sunshine in leafy Dorset or Kent. Seek out pubs in London that date back to the 16th century, frequented by such luminaries as Dickens, Keats, and the highwayman Dick Turpin. You’ll always find a friendly welcome.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites

The British Isles are packed with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, both natural and man-made. The elegant city of Bath has one of the best-preserved Roman spas in the world, while Stonehenge dates back 5,000 years. From Belfast, explore Giant’s Causeway, a phenomenal natural wonder comprising thousands of basalt columns. In London, admire the blooms and exotic flora at Kew’s Royal Botanic Gardens, or the gracious Palladian architecture of Maritime Greenwich, bisected by the 0° longitude meridian.

Featured British Isles Cruise Ports

Liverpool, england.

Liverpool is rich in maritime history and popular culture. If you’re a Beatles fan, you can visit the humble childhood homes of John, Paul, George, and Ringo. See Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, both of which inspired songs, and the Cavern Club, where it all began. Other Liverpool sights include the Three Graces, three iconic buildings on Pier Head, from where early emigrants to the United States departed. Visit the Cathedral, the largest in Britain, with soaring Gothic arches.

Belfast, Northern Ireland

Dynamic Belfast, today a thriving, modern city, is famed as the epicenter of the “Troubles” that spanned three decades from the 1960s. Visit the Peace Wall that separates Catholic and Protestant areas, daubed with poignant murals, as well as the infamous Crumlin Road Gaol, operational until 1996 and believed to be haunted. Titanic followers shouldn’t miss the superb Titanic Belfast exhibit, which tells the story in multiple dimensions of the world’s most famous ship, which was built here.

Dover, England

Dover is the gateway to the historic towns, lush countryside, and natural attractions of southeast England. Visit the White Cliffs of Dover for dramatic landscapes, wartime history, and coastal vistas. Venture to Canterbury to explore Canterbury Cathedral, dating back 1,400 years, and explore moated Leeds Castle, once home to six medieval queens. Spend the day in nearby Tenterden, where you can ride a vintage railway and taste English wine. Or head to London, an easy day trip away.

British Isles Cruise Itineraries

Explore the British Isles on either Celebrity Silhouette, which sails out of the Dutch port of Rotterdam, or Celebrity Apex, which is based in Southampton all summer long. Cruises last from 11 to 13 nights, incorporating exciting ports in Iceland or circumnavigating Britain.

Itineraries

Why cruise to the british isles with celebrity cruises.

Cruise the British Isles with Celebrity and you’ll have a choice of convenient departure ports including Rotterdam, just an hour away from Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and Southampton, England, a seamless journey from London. You’ll be able to enjoy the comforts of a sophisticated, contemporary ship for your European adventure.

The revolutionized Celebrity Silhouette features stylish, modern design, impeccable service, and, like all our ships, menus crafted by a Michelin-starred chef. Gaze out at Britain’s towering cliffs and green coastlines from the al fresco Lawn Club Grill, or feast on French classics with a contemporary twist in Murano. On Celebrity Apex, head to the leafy, light-filled lounge, Eden, for cocktails and dinner, or have lunch in the sunshine at the Rooftop Garden. Sink into a sofa on the Magic Carpet, an al fresco lounge high above the water with uninterrupted sea views. Choose The Retreat for suite accommodation, access to a private sundeck and lounge, and a table in the chic restaurant, Luminae at The Retreat.

United kingdom.

Regal. Charming. Scenic.

Comprised of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the United Kingdom definitely has dozens of reasons worth leaving home for. Mountains, valleys, hills and dales, forests and gardens, oh and no less than 25 UNESCO World Heritage sites scattered throughout, are but a few. You will find a slew of cathedrals, castles, palaces and country houses spanning history. Centuries of inspiring the world, influencing the arts, and forming natural beauty have developed this land into one great nation.

Destination Must-See's

UK ms1

A world in a city is a common way to describe the metropolis of London, the capital of England. A cultural melting pot of over 230 nationalities, London is the financial, political and cultural capital of the UK. It is booming with activity and bursting with sightseeing treasures. You’ll find historic highlights from the haunting Tower of London to the ornate Buckingham Palace and more modern attractions such as the world-famous Harrods department store and the towering London Eye.

UK ms2

The capital city and second most populous in Scotland, Edinburgh has been recognized for its historic and cultural attractions. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK after London. Great shopping, historic architecture and great Scottish whisky are just part of its allure. Its greatest draw is Edinburgh Castle. This sprawling medieval castle and fortress sits atop Castle Rock in the city center, dominating Edinburgh’s skyline.

UK ms3

Giant’s Causeway:

At the foot of the basalt cliffs on the coast of Northern Ireland’s County of Antrim lies the stunning Giant’s Causeway. Travelers flock to this UNESCO World Heritage site to experience the 40,000 massive dark columns rising from the sea. The natural phenomena has sparked legends of giants and magic, but its unique geology points to volcanic activity from over 50 million years ago. The Giant’s Causeway is a beautiful sight and the experience of a lifetime.

UK ms4

Cornwall, a region located on a peninsula in southwest England, is comprised of many different towns and villages that feature beautiful beaches and picturesque coastlines. Bordered by the Celtic Sea and the English Channel, one of its most popular towns is St. Ives. This seaside port town just north of Penzance on the coast of the Celtic Sea is known as the art center of West Cornwall and has a sub-tropical feel and beautiful beaches.

Destination Must-Do's

UK md3

England’s Lake District:

Lose yourself in the natural beauty of this mountainous region in northwest England dotted with tranquil lakes. One of the picturesque villages in the region is Grasmere, once home of and inspiration to the romantic poet William Wordsworth. Perhaps you will take a sail on one of the lakes and take in the peaceful backdrop of lush green mountains, serene shorelines and pristine calm waters dotted with tiny islands.

UK md2

Stonehenge:

Walk in the footsteps of so many before you when visiting prehistoric Stonehenge. This mysterious rock formation dates back to the Stone Age and remains one of the world’s most famous sites. Standing in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, Stonehenge is perhaps the most important prehistoric monument in England. The experience of seeing this timeless monument is not to be missed – it will surely be a highlight of your visit.

UK md1

This large, deep freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extends approximately 23 miles southwest of the city of Inverness. Loch Ness is best known for the alleged sightings of the Loch Ness monster. While Loch Ness is not the largest Scottish loch by surface area, it is the largest by volume, with its deepest point at 755 feet. Along the shore, you will find the ruins of Urquhart Castle. This once mighty site rests on the headwaters of Loch Ness and dates back as far as the 13th century.

UK md4

Prepare to step back in time in the English countryside. The Cotswolds are roughly 25 miles across and 90 miles long, stretching from Stratford-upon-Avon to Bath. The region is known for its small towns and villages with homes made from golden colored Cotswold stone and grass roofs that sit among lush greenery and rolling hills. Stratford-upon-Avon is perhaps its most famous town. Lying along the River Avon, it’s famed for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare, one of the world’s great playwrights. Be sure to make a trip to see the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Expert Advice

diana

Think “go to the right.” It is their natural flow of traffic even when it comes to walking. It is important to not only look both ways when crossing the street, but also when on an escalator, stand to the right. When walking down the street, stay alert and follow the flow – to the right.

UK e2

Expect to be offered tea, a lot. The British love their tea and not only during afternoon tea, any time for any reason. But you should know there is a “proper” way to drink it. The rules are – sit up straight, do not blow on it, take small sips with your pinky down, and put the cup on the saucer between sips. Now you are prepared to sip away.

UK e3

Bring a raincoat and umbrella, as it rains one out of three days in the UK. It does vary from region to region, but generally speaking, they are important items to have on hand at all times.

British Isles Cruises

Shore Excursions

British Isles cruises offer numerous delights, from famous landmarks, world-class museums and galleries to well-manicured parks and cultural experiences. Here is a just a sampling of the wide range of shore excursions available.

Visit Buckingham Palace in London: For just a short period each summer when the Royal Court has left London for summer vacation in Scotland it is possible to view the State Rooms of Buckingham Palace. Here, among some of the finest pictures and works of art in the world, visitors can see where the Queen and members of the Royal Family receive and entertain their guests on State, ceremonial and official occasions.

Take a Panoramic tour of Edinburgh: A panoramic narrated tour of the city takes in Edinburgh's principal sights, from Holyrood Palace to the elegant Georgian buildings of the New Town. Visit Edinburgh Castle atop the Royal Mile and enjoy free time to view the Crown Jewels of Scotland or explore St. Margaret's Chapel and the Great Hall of James IV.

Kiss the Blarney Stone in Cork: Blarney village lies in the protective shadow of historic Blarney Castle. The castle was built in two sections and has a massive oblong keep, with battlements that are typically Irish in form. Below them, the famous Blarney Stone is set in the wall, and to kiss it, one has to lean over backwards from the parapet walk of the battlements. Legend tells us that by doing so you receive the gift of eloquence.

Enjoy a pint of Guiness beer in Dublin: The Guinness Storehouse is located in the heart of the Guinness Brewery. It is a dramatic story that began over 250 years ago and ends in 'Gravity', the sky bar, which has astonishing views of Dublin. The 'Guinness adventure' begins the moment you walk through the door and into the building's giant, pint-shaped heart of glass. Find out how the drink that carries Arthur Guinness's name has traveled around the world. After your visit, you will have the opportunity to taste the world famous stout.

Visit a Goldsmith’s Workshop on Guernsey Island: Drive through the country lanes of Torteval before stopping to visit the Russell family's authentic Goldsmith's workshop, which is set on five acres of prize-winning landscaped gardens. The modern tree sculpture in the running stream and the little waterfall leading to an ornamental Koi pool all add to the ambience of this idyllic spot. While visiting, you’ll have the opportunity to watch artisans at work and admire a variety of their handmade products.

Tour Christchurch Cathedral in Waterford: A glorious example of Georgian architecture, the church you see today is the third to be built on this hallowed site. The first was constructed in 1096; the second was built in the medieval era. The present Georgian structure, with its dramatic spire, is one of the finest churches of its time. Standing before it, you can almost feel the history, as it was here that a papal decree was read out, authorizing the English and Norman king, Henry II to reform the church in Ireland. Following an informative introduction offered by your guide, you are free to explore the cathedral's interior independently.

Explore Hillsborough Castle in Belfast: At Hillsborough Castle, delight in discovering the residence of the British Royal Family and visiting dignitaries. President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair met at Hillsborough Castle on April 7, 2003 to discuss world affairs. A guided tour of the castle will acquaint you with the tales of the Hill family, who held the title of Marquis of Downshire, and the Governors. Hear about the castle's role in more recent Northern Ireland history and view many interesting pieces of furniture and works of art.

Walk in the Footsteps of the Beatles in Liverpool: You will pass through the city center of Liverpool and into the suburbs, viewing the birthplaces, former homes, schools and venues associated with the Fab Four along the way. Pass such renowned sights as Penny Lane and Strawberry Field before pausing at Mathew Street to see the location of the old Cavern Club.

Seemingly tucked away in the corner of the world, the British Isles nonetheless exert a world-wide influence that belies their small size. English literature buffs familiar with Shakespeare, Jane Austen, or the Romantic Poets will relish Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, the Lake District , and Bath, while amateur historians will enjoy visits to medieval castles, the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. In Scotland, experience the local culture – ‘neeps and tatties’, the Edinburgh military tattoo, and local whiskey ; while in Wales , enjoy our walking tour of its unjustly neglected coastline.

Across the St George’s Channel (Irish sea), our visits to Dublin take in Ireland’s tangible historical remnants – the Book of Kells, O’Connell Street, and St Patrick’s Cathedral – in order to understand its turbulent history. We also offer a trip off the beaten path to see Northern Ireland, including the Giant’s Causeway. And wherever we are, our itinerary always takes time to journey into the British Isles spectacular scenery: England’s Cotswold and quaint villages; Snowdonia National Park in Wales ; the Scottish highlands and Loch Lomond; and Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher and Killarney National Park (on the Ring of Kerry). For those mature and senior travellers seeking a small group tour of the British isles and small group tours of Ireland and Scotland 2020 – 2021 we offer over 100 departures from our small group tour of the British isles collection each year.

Odyssey’s tours to Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales are all an escorted tour with a tour manager often accompanied by a knowledgeable local tour guide. Whether your are on a Ireland tour for the first time or a Scotland tour heading for the Scottish highlands, our tour director will have the itinerary for your sightseeing tour planned out. If you are on walking tours of England Scotland and Ireland, then on this walking holiday your tour manager will have the coach ready for ready for the hike into the countryside, over rolling hills, pausing in quaint villages for lunch. We enjoy preparing for each tour to ensure whatever small group tour or walking holiday you choose that we have prepared for your trip.

Exploring Britain's Prehistoric Past: The Definitive Guide for Travellers

Article on Britain's neolithic past for small group educational tours for senior couples and mature solo travellers interested in learning about Standing stones, burial chambers , Skara Brae and Stonehenge or Beaker people.

When is the best time to go on your UK trip?

The best time to visit the United Kingdom is in spring (late March to early June) and autumn (September to November), when it’s usually warm and dry. You’ll see beautiful spring flowers or the leaves changing hue in autumn, and avoid the much busier summer period.

Why choose a small group tour?

Odyssey specialises in educational small group tours , for seniors , typically groups between 6 to 12 people, and no more than 18 travellers. Odyssey has been offering this style of adventure and educational programs, since 1983.

We offer a wide range of educational, cultural and heritage journeys that expand horizons and broaden the mind. Our tours are designed for active, inquisitive travellers in a small group environment.

What's the accommodation like on a group tour?

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our long stay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?

Whether travelling solo, in a couple, or with friends, Odyssey Traveller caters primarily for travellers over 50, over 60, over 70 or 80 years of age. Therefore, your travelling companions are sure to share your interests. They will want similar experiences in an environment of mutual understanding. We design all programs with the mature traveller in mind. Travelling solo does not mean travelling alone, so when there’s free time to explore you’re sure to have another solo traveler or couple ready to join you if you wish. Single travelers make about a third of our groups and many a repeat travelers!

How big are the group sizes on your tours?

Odyssey specialises in educational small group tours , for seniors , typically groups between 6 to 12 people, and averages at 12 participants per tour, a mix of singles and couples.

First solo trip with Odyssey?

Odyssey offers a collection of genuine small group tour(s) Odyssey tours are priced to reflect that these are small group tours. Typically this means you are part of a small group of 6 to 12 people, not part of a group of 18 or more. Small group means you and fellow traveller enjoying an evening meal around one dinner table. So, we do not achieve the economies of scale of 18 plus on a coach that a larger tour operator would offer, because this is not the type of trip or touring experience our clients seek from us.

Odyssey tours are genuinely based around;

  • A Small group tour of less than 18 people for the mature traveller as holidays for a couple and holidays for solo travellers over 50.
  • Knowledgeable local expert guides and a great tour leader who has an interest in the theme of the tour.
  • Inclusive pricing, including all entrances, tipping and the majority of meals included. That means, no hidden extras with respect to cost. Transparent pricing of the single supplement for the single traveller.
  • A learning based escorted tour with a like minded fellow traveller.
  • Accommodation in 3 & 4 star hotels and self catering apartments.
  • A blend of group learning, touring activities and free time to explore a place further, whether on a discovery or walking holiday program.
  • No name badges or flags to follow when out and about.
  • Travel to places that extend your learning and curiosity, often where others will not follow.
  • Spending typically between 60 to 85% of the operating cost of the tour in the country visited, benefiting the local communities directly.

Do you have any other holidays that aren't with a group?

Odyssey welcome enquiries for private groups, at a minimum of 6 participants.

What is a small group tour?

Tours typically span between two to three weeks in duration. An Odyssey small group tour seeks to stay typically 2 to 3 nights in each location in good 3 or 4 star hotels. These are an escorted tour that have evolved to be a good blend of touring and seeing. As well as opportunities to spend time in key places to take a half or full day break from the group enabling you should you with to be a solo traveller for a few hours or explore with a travelling companion a particular place or take time out for a break, before we travel on to our next destination. For the solo traveller , Odyssey has a expansive range of holidays for solo travellers over 50 to choose from, though we do not offer a regular river cruise or a dedicated solos holiday or solo travel tours.

For the solo traveller there is a single supplement charged on all of Odyssey Travellers small group tour programs. The single supplement reflects the cost of single occupancy of a hotel room with a double bed in your own room (generally, no single bedded rooms are offered across Europe) or a single cabin on a cruise . There are no additional charges made any client booking holidays for solo travellers over 50 years of age, just the single supplement , we like to keep a level of transparency in the prices charged.

Which countries do small group tours go to?

Odyssey Traveller offers tours all over the world. We have a range of tours across Europe , The British Isles , Asia , Africa , The Middle East , and The Americas . We can take you to see the Northern Lights in the outermost regions of Norway. You can travel with us to the jungles of Madagascar to experience its magnificent landscape and wildlife or see the ruins of Machu Picchu in South America . Or take a journey through history with a tour with the theme of Britain’s canals and railways . If you enjoy a spot of cruising, join our Journey through Mongolia and Russia which includes a 10 night river cruise between Moscow and St. Petersburg, or our Egypt tour with an amazing Nile river cruise . DAY 1 - Overnight flight to Great Britain.

The Trip Documents will provide guidance for airport check-in and for arrival in the British Isles. Relax on your transatlantic flight with the assurance that Image Tours has taken care of all the details.

DAY 2 - ENGLAND . . Arrival at London Airport - Oxford - Warwickshire.

Upon arrival, clear passport control and collect your luggage. Refer to the "Arrival Instructions" in the Trip Documents for directions on where and when to meet your tour manager. During the motor coach transfer to your hotel in Warwickshire, make a brief stop in Oxford where Henry II established the first university of Britain in 1167. Tonight, at your hotel, get acquainted with your fellow travelers during the "Welcome Dinner." (Dinner)

DAY 3 - ENGLAND . . Stow-on-the-Wold - Stratford-Upon-Avon - Warwickshire.

Views of the unspoiled countryside known as the Cotswolds clearly confirm you have arrived in England. Gentle hillsides, peaceful meadows, and charming villages with old stone buildings characterize this region. The first destination today is Stow-on-the-Wold, offering antique shops and an opportunity to take a souvenir photo with your hands in the village's authentic stocks. Then it's on to Stratford-Upon-Avon, where half-timbered houses with thatched roofs create a truly English setting. The introductory tour includes a picture stop in front of Anne Hathaway's Cottage and entrance to the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Enjoy some free time in Stratford-Upon-Avon or join the optional Warwick Castle excursion (see Optional Excursions) showcasing 1,000 years of history. Return to your Warwickshire hotel for dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 4 - ENGLAND . . York - County Durham.

Drive north via the Nottingham area. Around lunch time, arrive in the historic city of York and spend the afternoon exploring the sights that interest you. "The Shambles" is one of the most picturesque streets in Britain with unique shops, cafés and restaurants. York also boasts the most complete example of medieval city walls still standing in England today. Walk along them for exceptional views. Be sure to take a look inside York Minster Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in England. In the late afternoon, travel through North Yorkshire to County Durham for hotel check-in and dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 5 - ENGLAND . . Hadrian's Wall & SCOTLAND . . Jedburgh - Edinburgh.

A morning drive takes you to Hadrian's Wall, a fascinating Roman monument nearly 2,000 years old. Stop at Chester’s Roman Fort to study a section of the 70-plus mile structure at a closer range. Shortly after crossing the border into Scotland, reach Jedburgh where you will be treated to an English Tea with cakes and finger sandwiches. Following tea, use your free time in Jedburgh to tour the Mary Queen of Scots House, see Jedburgh Abbey, or do some shopping at the Woollen Mill. A late afternoon arrival at your Edinburgh hotel provides time to freshen up and relax. Dinner is independent, or join the optional Scottish Dinner excursion (see Optional Excursions). DAY 6 - SCOTLAND . . Edinburgh.

Start the day with a guided tour of Edinburgh. Afterward, a good place to spend your free time is along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh's Old Town. As you walk past the classic old houses, you may wish to visit one of the unique attractions such as the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh Castle, Writer's Museum, Gladstone's Land (the oldest standing house in Edinburgh), Museum of Childhood, or the high-tech Our Dynamic Earth Museum. Edinburgh offers a variety of options for tonight's independent dinner. [ During the first two weeks of August, Image Tours includes attendance to the world famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a spectacular show by military bands, performed outside the castle ]. (Breakfast)

DAY 7 - SCOTLAND . . Gretna Green & ENGLAND . . Liverpool.

The morning stop will be at the Old Blacksmith’s Shop in the border town of Gretna Green, which became well known for “run-away weddings” officiated by the blacksmith. Starting in 1754, English couples would cross the border to be married under the liberal terms of the Scottish laws. Continuing south from Gretna Green, travel back into England and on to Liverpool, the birthplace of the Beatles. A 4:00 p.m. arrival at your Liverpool hotel provides time to explore and shop. Your tour manager will offer an optional Magical Mystery Tour excursion (see Optional Excursions) highlighting landmarks made famous by the Beatles. Dinner is independent tonight so that you may choose to dine at the hotel or at one of the pubs, restaurants or live music venues along Mathew Street. Here you will find the replicated Cavern Club, where the Beatles regularly played during their early years. (Breakfast)

DAY 8 - WALES . . Snowdonia - Caernarfon - Ferry from Holyhead & IRELAND . . Dublin.

This day is devoted to the sweeping landscape of Northern Wales. After a morning stop in Betws-y-Coed, continue through the thick pine forest into Snowdonia National Park, a mountainous region with rough but beautiful terrain. At Caernarfon, admire one of the castles built by King Edward I. A quick independent lunch will allow time to climb the castle's tower (approximately £11 admission fee). After the motor coach crosses the Menai Bridge onto the Isle of Anglesey, pause to take a picture of the town with the longest name, which we abbreviate here as Llanfair P.G. For your independent dinner, you have the choice of dining while you ferry from Wales to the Republic of Ireland or at a pub upon arrival in Dublin. (Breakfast)

DAY 9 - IRELAND . . Dublin.

The capital city of the Republic of Ireland offers much to keep you busy and entertained. A local guide joins you this morning to provide insight into the city's history and to point out the popular landmarks including Dublin Castle, Trinity College and the Guinness Brewery. Entrance into St. Patrick's Cathedral is included. Following the city tour, the afternoon is free for individual pursuits. The area west of Dublin has become known as the center of the Irish horse breeding and training industry. After touring the Kildare National Stud Farm, visit the Japanese Gardens of Tully House. As you continue toward western Ireland, relax and enjoy the scenes of meadows, glens and crystal clear rivers. One of the friendly country villages along the way will provide a pleasant spot for an independent lunch. Bakeries will offer you tea sandwiches, and family-owned pubs will serve up hearty Irish dishes. Then it's on to your County Kerry hotel, hosting you for dinner this evening and a two-night stay. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Travel to the Iveragh Peninsula, also known as "The Ring of Kerry," for a day of spectacular coastal landscapes. An included visit to the Roman Baths Museum reveals the advanced engineering developed by the Romans. Then, it is on to mysterious Stonehenge. Dating back to about 1500 B.C., one can only speculate how the stones reached the site and how they were moved into place - some  weighing 45 tons! LONDON DINNER & THEATRE

Tour Extensions

London post-tour extension, tour year 2025.

Today begins your British Isles adventure with Image Tours. The Image Tours “Departure Instructions” will provide guidance for airport check-in.  Relax on your transatlantic flight with the assurance that Image Tours has taken care of all the details.

Upon arrival, clear passport control and collect your luggage.  Refer to the “Arrival Instructions” in the travel information provided by Image Tours for directions on when and where to meet your tour manager.  During the motor coach transfer to your hotel in Warwickshire, make a brief stop in Oxford where Henry II established the first university of Britain in 1167.  Tonight, at your hotel, get acquainted with your fellow travelers during the “Welcome Dinner.”  (Dinner)

Views of the unspoiled countryside known as the Cotswolds clearly confirm you have arrived in England.  Gentle  hillsides, peaceful meadows, and charming villages with old stone buildings characterize this region.  The first destination today is Stow-on-the-Wold, offering antique shops and an opportunity to take a souvenir photo with your hands in the village’s authentic stocks.  Then it’s on to Stratford-Upon-Avon, where half-timbered houses with thatched roofs create a truly English setting.  Orientation includes a visit to the birthplace of William Shakespeare.  Following your visit, enjoy free time in Stratford-Upon-Avon or join the optional Warwick Castle excursion (see Optional Excursions) showcasing 1,000 years of history.  Return to your Warwickshire hotel for dinner.  (Breakfast, Dinner)

Drive north through the Nottingham area to the historic city of York. Arriving around lunch time, spend the afternoon exploring the popular sights. “The Shambles” is one of the most picturesque streets in Britain with unique shops, cafés and restaurants.  York also boasts the most complete set of medieval city walls still standing in England today. Walk along them for exceptional views.  Be sure to take a look inside York Minster Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in England. In the late afternoon, travel through North Yorkshire to County Durham for hotel check-in and dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

A morning drive takes you to Hadrian’s Wall, a fascinating Roman monument nearly 2,000 years old.  Stop at Chester’s Roman Fort to study a section of the 70-plus mile structure up close. Shortly after crossing the border into Scotland, arrive in Jedburgh where you will be treated to Afternoon Tea with cakes and finger sandwiches.  Following tea, use your free time in Jedburgh to tour the Mary, Queen of Scots House, see Jedburgh Abbey, or do some shopping at the Woollen Mill.  A late afternoon arrival at your Edinburgh hotel provides time to freshen up and relax before stepping out for an independent dinner.  (Breakfast, Afternoon Tea)

Start the day with a guided tour of Edinburgh. The Royal Mile, Edinburgh’s Old Town, is a wonderful place to spend your afternoon free time.  As you walk past the classic old houses, you may wish to visit one of the unique attractions such as the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh Castle, Writer’s Museum, Gladstone’s Land (the oldest standing house in Edinburgh), Museum of Childhood, or the high-tech Our Dynamic Earth Museum.  Edinburgh offers a variety of options for tonight’s independent dinner.  [During the first two weeks of August, Image Tours includes attendance to the world famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a spectacular show by military bands, performed outside the castle] .  (Breakfast)

The morning stop will be at the Old Blacksmith’s Shop in the border town of Gretna Green, which became well known for “run-away weddings” officiated by the blacksmith (known as the anvil priest).  Starting in 1754, English couples would cross the border to be married under the liberal terms of the Scottish laws.  Continuing south, travel back into England  and on to Liverpool, the birthplace of the Beatles.  A 4:00 p.m. arrival at your Liverpool hotel provides time to explore and shop. Here you will find the replicated Cavern Club, where the Beatles were discovered.  (Breakfast)

This day is devoted to the sweeping landscape of Northern Wales.  After a morning stop in Betws-y-Coed, continue through the thick pine forest into Snowdonia National Park: a mountainous region with rough but beautiful terrain.  At Caernarfon, admire one of the castles built by King Edward I.  A quick independent lunch will allow time to climb the castle’s tower (admission fee).  After the motor coach crosses the Menai Bridge onto the Isle of Anglesey, pause to take a picture of the town with the longest name(58 letters), which we abbreviate here as Llanfair P.G.  For your independent dinner, you have the choice of dining while you ferry from Wales to the Republic of Ireland or at a pub upon arrival in Dublin.  (Breakfast)

The capital city of the Republic of Ireland offers much to keep you busy and entertained. A local guide joins you this morning to provide insight into the city’s history and to point out the popular landmarks including Dublin Castle, Trinity College and the Guinness Brewery. Entrance into St. Patrick’s Cathedral is included. Following the city tour, the after noon is free for individual pursuits. A popular attraction is the “Book of Kells Experience” at the Trinity College Library (admission fee). Here you will view the Book of Kells, an ornately decorated and meticulously scribed edition of the Gospels from 800 A.D. Equally popular is a tour of the Guinness Brewery (admission fee). Tonight’s dinner is independent, or join the optional Irish Dinner Show excursion (see Optional Excursions). (Breakfast)

The area west of Dublin has become known as the center of the Irish horse breeding and training industry. Tour the Kildare National Stud Farm, followed by a visit to the Japanese Gardens of Tully House. Then it’s on to your County Kerry hotel, hosting you for dinner this evening and a two-night stay. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Travel to the Iveragh Peninsula, also known as “The Ring of Kerry,” for a day of spectacular coastal landscapes.  Along the way, make several photo stops.  A lunch at one of the seaside villages is included.  At one of the farms en route from the coast to Killarney, observe a sheep herding demonstration.  For tonight’s independent dinner, Killarney offers everything from excellent restaurants to friendly local pubs.  After dinner, return to your County Kerry hotel.  (Breakfast, Lunch)

The morning visit to Blarney Castle is sure to be a tour highlight.  Capture enchanting photos and impressive views as you walk the grounds and study this 17th century fortification with walls that are 18 feet thick at the base.  Learn of the magical tales associated with the castle, the most famous involving the Blarney Stone.  Enjoy an independent lunch at one of the charming restaurants in the village of Blarney.  An early afternoon arrival in Waterford allows for time to explore the town on foot or to participate in the optional Waterford Crystal Experience excursion (see Optional Excursions).  Dinner is included at your hotel.  (Breakfast, Dinner)

An early morning departure is necessary to reach the ferry in Rosslare for your crossing from Ireland to Wales.  You will have time for an independent lunch while on the ferry. Arriving in Wales, view the scenery along the coastal road between Pembrokeshire National Park and the Wye Valley.  By mid-afternoon, arrive in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Take a stroll through the 56-acre Bute Park, relax over afternoon tea at a café or participate in the optional Cardiff  Castle excursion (see Optional Excursions). Continue to your hotel for check-in and dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Crossing the mouth of the River Severn, return to England for a tour of Bath: the elegant spa town where the Romans harnessed the natural hot springs 2,000 years ago.  An included visit to the Roman Baths Museum reveals the advanced engineering developed by the Romans.  Then, it is on to mysterious Stonehenge.  Dating back to about 1500 B.C., one can only speculate how the stones reached the site and how they were moved into place — some weighing 45 tons!  Upon arrival in London, check in and enjoy a relaxing “Farewell Dinner” at the hotel.  Tomorrow, the entire day will be devoted to sightseeing in the British capital.  (Breakfast, Dinner)

Today begins with a guided bus tour of London’s famous landmarks such as the Royal Parks, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament with Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Trafalgar Square.  Following the city tour, you will have a few hours to pursue your personal interests.  If you have a specific destination in mind, the Tube system (Underground) is easy, fast and economical.  Your tour manager will also provide suggestions for some of the most popular attractions.  Spend lunch time amid the bustling shops and street performers of Covent Garden.  Or, study works of art by da Vinci, van Gogh, Rembrandt, Michelangelo and Picasso at The National Gallery.  Located on the banks of the River Thames, the London Eye Ferris wheel provides unique views of the city.  In the evening, London offers numerous options for independent dining and entertainment.  Or, join your tour manager for the optional London Dinner & Theatre excursion (see Optional Excursions).  (Breakfast)

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO British-Isles Cruises Insider

Because of its island climate, the British Isles don't get quite as warm in the summer or quite as cold in the winter as elsewhere in Europe. People love to visit in the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, when the weather is usually warm and dry.

Of course, British weather is known to be temperamental, and rain is frequent. Pack layers even if you're visiting in summer, as the evenings can get cool, and bring a waterproof jacket and outerwear regardless of the season.

You can find longer 12 night sailings around the British Isles from Amsterdam, Netherlands and shorter sampling sailings out of Southampton, England .

Tipping is not customary across the British Isles like it is elsewhere in Europe and in North America. Some restaurants do add a service charge to bills.

If driving in the British Isles, remember Ireland road signs are in kilometers, while Great Britain uses miles instead.

FOR FOODIE'S A CUISINE OF COMFORT

Each country in the British Isles is known for its signature pub grub and comfort food dishes. These hearty and predominantly meaty meals keep locals warm in a region known for its bracing weather.

Traditional Irish Stew for St. Patricks day

Stir the Pot

Made from slow-cooked meat — typically lamb or beef — and root vegetables such as potatoes, onions and carrots, a bowl of Irish stew with a side of crusty bread is only made better when washed down with a pint of Guinness.

Cote de Boeuf with Yorkshire Pudding

The Proof's in the Pudding

Typically served on Sundays, a traditional British roast usually includes roast beef, roast potatoes, a side of vegetables and Yorkshire pudding, a baked pudding often served with gravy. Head to a London pub to tuck into this English tradition.

British Fish and Chips

The O.G. Fish and Chips

Across the British Isles, you'll find thousands of restaurants and shops exclusively serving fish and chips, which first appeared in England in the 1860s. Flaky, tender white fish is deep-fried in a thin, crunchy layer of batter and served alongside thick-cut fried potatoes and "mushy" peas, as the locals call them, which are blended with cream or occasionally ultra-rich bone marrow.

Did anyone have any favorite excursions, included or independent, that you enjoyed on the BIE cruise?

Were there any excursions you wished you had not booked?

We're not going until next June but never too early to plan!

We enjoyed the Ffestiniog railway in Wales, especially the scenery to and from the train and lunch in a lovely town. It is a long day, but you get to see a beautiful part of Wales. This excursion was sold out, so when we got on board, we went immediately to the service desk and asked to be put on a waitlist. They ended up creating a whole second group for this excursion because of the widespread interest.

In Belfast, my husband greatly enjoyed the Saint Patrick tour, which takes you out into the countryside. (I was unable to go due to a sprained knee.)

For included tours, we loved the Highlights of Historic Orkney. It included a good overview of the main island, including being able to get out and see the standing stones. There was also plenty of time to wander on our own in a couple of nice villages.

We also loved visiting the farm in Bergen. Delightful host and interesting insights.

Thank you Twitchly! I'll look into these.Hope your knee is feeling much better.

If you're going to Lerwick, Shetland, I can recommend  https://www.shetlandminibustours.co.uk/   and in Orkney we did a tour (shared with another couple), but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the company.

We more often than not are happy to use the ship's included tours, but the advantage in these small islands (which we unfortunately will probably never get the chance to return to) is that we had most places to ourselves on the tours, as the guides could plan their itineraries to avoid the coaches.

Se did the BIE this summer and loved every minute ... it was even a repeat as we did it back in 2018 but felt "brand new" as we mixed things up with our excursions and did a lot on our own (no tour, Viking or otherwise).

  • In Shetland we loved the "Crofting" excursion ... I believe it is now called something like "Rural Shetland".  We had a lovely ride into the countryside to a croft and there had a demonstration of sheep shearing, got to pet their shetland ponies, and (best of all!) got to watch their champion border collies in action.  The weather was abysmal; wind and rain like I hadn't seen in a long time but no one cared ... loved every minute!  In the interest of full disclosure, I love animals, dogs in particular so there was a bias at the start.
  • We did the Festiniog Rail excursion in Wales and it was very nice ... but ... be forewarned that the train is not air conditioned (duh!) and we were there during the heat wave that hit the UK summer.  The windows were open so the breeze helped but it was hot.  The lunch was lovely and the service was great but again ... no air conditioning and the food, good as it was, was the hale and hearty "comfort food" which was perhaps not the best on a hot day.  After lunch there was more than an hour of free time in the town but not as much to see and do as we might have liked.  We ended up getting ice cream (looooong lines!) and sitting in a covered breezeway near the train station to try to stay cool.
  • We did the "Belfast Food Trail" in Belfast and had a great time!  The guide was great and the group from the ship was lovely ... that really makes a difference on excursions.  We got to see a lot of Belfast at the ground level and taste some of the best Belfast has to offer in the way of food!  We ended our tour in the oldest pub in Dublin where, after persistent cajoling,  the Assistant Cruise Director honored us with a lovely rendition of "Danny Boy".  He got a standing ovation from everyone in the pub ... and some outside as well!  It was a moment!
  • We went to the winery in Dover and had a lovely tour, wine tasting and lunch.  It was very nice but a wee bit pricey.

Have a great trip ... we loved it (obviously!)!

We are going on this cruise next spring and it is great to read recommendations.  We have two private (for 4 people) tours reserved in Belfast and Invergordon and are looking for two people to join us. If anyone is on our April  2023 cruise, please join the roll call!

We also did the BIE this past summer and enjoyed a combination of Viking tours and private tours.  If you have time, I would recommend taking the train that runs between Oslo and Bergen, beautiful scenery.  As for tours, we did a private tour in Shetland ( David Malcolm - Discover Shetland ), a retired doctor and local historian!!  In Orkney we joined another couple and toured with See Orkney , great excursion and were able to see so much more than expected.  As for optional excursions, we also enjoyed the Ffestiniog Railway tour, long day, but as others have said, beautiful scenery.  This excursion tends to sellout first, but were able to get on the waitlist once on board and it seemed that Viking added an additional bus to accommodate the demand.  I would also recommend the Canterbury and Leeds Castle tour. We arrived at Leeds Castle just as they were opening the gates, so for the first hour it was more like a private tour!

Thank you so much! We are also doing the pre in Oslo and taking the train. Any recommendations for sights or restaurants in Olso would be greatly appreciated!

Recommend: Vigeland (open 24 hours), Munch and National Museums ( both Art Museums, opened this year), walking on the roof of the Opera House (sunbath there if the weather is good), Viking Ship and Fram museums, Raadhuset, Aker Brugge (shopping, dining area). Lots to do in Oslo!

Agree with @janetcbl , there's lots to do and see in Oslo!  In addition to the list above, we also enjoyed the Nobel Peace Center and Oslo City Hall . The Viking Ship Museum is currently closed for renovations until 2025.  Enjoy!

Any suggestions for the 2 day pre cruise in Bergen, besides those shown on the Viking website?

Just now, JerryInIL said: Any suggestions for the 2 day pre cruise in Bergen?

“Norway in a Nutshell” with an overnight in Flam. Almost any TA can book it for you, and some people wait until they get to Norway, but that is taking a chance. I have done this trip in all seasons/all weather….it is always great and the scenery magnificent!

As @janetcbl  says, the Norway in a Nutshell is great and can also be done as one day. For Bergen itself - a walking tour of Brygge; funicular to Mt. Floyen; tour the Fishmarket;  Rodne fjord cruise below which leaves from the wharf right downtown, about 20 minute walk from the ship.   🍺 🥌

Thanks Rob and Janet for the suggestions.

Since there's been some interest on this forum for information about British Isles Explorer excursions, I thought I would share the excursions that Viking is offering on our BIE cruise (May 9, 2023 - London to Bergen).  In My Viking Journey, shore excursions for our cruise were posted yesterday much to my surprise (almost 5 months in advance!).  I've attached a spreadsheet with the excursions being offered, times and prices. Of course, no guarantees that the same excursions and times will be available on the other BIE cruises, especially those traveling from Bergen to London.

I also included (in the far right column) the 2022 prices when available.  On average, prices increased about $20 per excursion (usually between $10 to $30) in 2023 compared to 2022.

For future BIE cruisers, hope this helps with your planning!

Thanks for taking the time to do this and sharing it here. Our BIE cruise is after yours - May 27, 2023 - and we were surprised to see excursions listed about 3 days ago! Our cruise is also London to Bergen, but the excursions are not all the same. I compared the day in London and found 5 of the 6 excursions were the same. Our offerings do not include Southwark - but we have the Imperial War Museum and Classic Monuments of London (total of 7 choices). It appears that we’ll be in port longer as, for example, the Tower of London is in the afternoon while yours is in the morning. I haven’t compared any of the other days, but everyone should be aware their BIE cruise may have different offerings.

THANK YOU, @Moonlion !   I haven't even looked at it yet and I know that it will be a fantastic help in planning our 2024 BIE.

I wonder how much more we will have to pay over the 2023 prices?

May 29, 2023 is "Spring Bank Holiday" in the UK -- a three-day weekend nationwide.

The tides on the Thames also have a lot to say about arrival and departure times -- and no captain wants to get that data point wrong.

Also interesting to note the Chelsea Flower Show is May 23-27. It's one of the largest flower shows in the world. We attended one year. It is spectacular.

I havent done the BIE, but on our Midnight Sun we did the Highland Park day in Orkney - which is great if you are a whisky person.  It was the tour, a very nice tasting, lunch, a visit to where peat is harvested, and then we hit some historic sites.  Our guide was a hoot and there was additional whisky poured throughout the tour 🙂

In Shetland I had tried to book David Malcom, but he was already booked.  Instead we spent a lovely day with his daughter (Kittywake Tours).  We did what is think is the South Mainland Tour.  So many puffins!

You'll need to buy tickets now (or as soon as available) if interested. Hampton Court flower show has a lot of the same exhibitors but has a bigger site and is a lot less crowded.

Kew is also worth a visit if interested in horticulture

The Highlands (Invergordon), Scotland

Invergordon lies in the mountainous, heather-covered Scottish Highlands amid a patchwork of farmland. The small community celebrates itself with a series of stunning murals painted by local artists; a walking trail leads visitors to them all, passing colorful window flowerboxes along the way. Whisky is another mainstay here, produced in a local grain distillery. This charming port is the gateway to a breathtaking region that provides a fascinating glimpse into the days of warring clans, and into the legend of “Nessie,” the fabled monster of Loch Ness.

Cruise Overview

Nature and heritage around the british isles.

*Please note that on our 8 May 2024 departure, in the Orkney Islands we will visit Stromness instead of Kirkwall. Join a walking tour of this charming harbour town and learn about its maritime and Viking heritage - as well as a local pirate - as you wander through narrow streets packed with an assortment of curious shops.

Picturesque towns full of history

Experience the beauty and variety of the British Isles on an expedition cruise. Explore the quaint villages, charming towns and impressive historical landmarks. Discover the Viking and Gaelic heritage of Waterford and Stornoway, and sample single malt whisky on Islay.

Nature and wild islands

You’ll encounter the wild landscapes of the Hebrides, the tropical-looking Isles of Scilly and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the Isle of Man, as well as enjoying scenic walks along the Pembrokeshire and Devon coasts.

PLEASE NOTE: In keeping with our adventurous spirit, we visit small remote ports on our expeditions. Due to sea conditions and secluded locations we visit, it's not always possible to dock in port. Sometimes we have to use our small expedition boats to get ashore.

Depart from Dover

Set sail on your island-hopping adventure

Your expedition cruise starts in Dover. If you have time before boarding MS Maud, take a walk along the famous White Cliffs at St Margaret's Bay for incredible views of the coastline and the sparkling English Channel below.

Once you've picked up your expedition jacket and settled into your cabin, you'll have a chance to meet your Expedition Team, who'll be your friendly hosts and knowledgeable guides. Then enjoy your first dinner aboard the ship – your adventure has begun.

Relax at sea

Get to know your basecamp at sea

Enjoy an idyllic day at sea with plenty to do. Admire the views from MS Maud’s Observation Deck, visit the Science Center for insights into the island destinations ahead, or take advantage of the gym and hot tubs.

Photography enthusiasts can pick up some pointers from our onboard photographer on how to capture wildlife and landscapes. You'll find the comfort of the Explorer Lounge a great place to read or watch the world glide by.

You can also enjoy a talk by the Expedition Team, experienced explorers who will share their extensive knowledge of the places ahead with you.

The 'Land's End' of Wales

Explore scenic coastlines and the UK's smallest city

Nestled between the Preseli Hills and the Pembrokeshire coast is the charming coastal town of Fishguard. You’ll find the original hamlet and harbour in Lower Fishguard and spectacular sea views from the ‘Main Town’ above.

A short drive away is the UK’s smallest city, St Davids. More a village than a city, it owes its city status to its 12th century cathedral. You can explore this conservation area as part of an included excursion.

The dramatic headland nearby is the most westerly point in Wales. Here you can enjoy spectacular views along the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastal path.

Elegant Belfast

Discover Northern Ireland’s capital

We sail into Belfast, a city with a proud seafaring history and the birthplace of the Titanic. History buffs will enjoy Ulster Museum and Belfast Castle, while nature lovers can visit the Botanic Gardens.

Stroll the cobbled streets of the chic Cathedral Quarter, with its elegant Victorian architecture, and pop inside St Anne’s Cathedral to see its beautiful mosaics. In Donegall Square, you'll find the historical landmarks of City Hall and the Grand Opera House, with its beautiful façade.

Belfast also allows access to the iconic Giant’s Causeway, and the rugged northern coastline. Explore the towering cliffs and distinctive hexagonal columns of this natural wonder.

Captain's Choice – Castlebay

Island gems in the Outer Hebrides

One of the best things about expedition cruising is the feeling that anything can happen on any given day. That’s why we’ve carved out one day to take full advantage of exploring the region.

Today, the Captain and the Expedition Team will decide whether we explore Barra or Vatersay, the two most southerly inhabited islands of the Outer Hebrides, linked to each other by a causeway.

Go in search of birds and sea life in our expedition boats or attempt to land in the innumerable coves and beaches that dot the islands close to Castlebay.

Highlights of Orkney

Learn about Kirkwall's Norse heritage

Today we sail to the Orkney Islands' largest town, Kirkwall. Explore this vibrant and compact Viking-influenced capital on foot.

Visit the regal St Magnus Cathedral, made from distinctive local red sandstone, and the adjacent Earl’s Palace to see the stone ruins of this once-grand Renaissance building. The Neolithic settlement of Scara Brae is also only a bus ride away.

Whisky aficionados will enjoy Kirkwall's Highland Park and Scapa distilleries for their distinctive single malts. If you fancy something different, Orkney Distillery produces Kirkjuvagr gin from Orcadian botanicals.

excursions british isles

Stalwart Stornoway

Experience the Gaelic culture of the Hebrides

Our expedition cruise arrives at Stornoway, the Isle of Lewis and Harris capital. As you explore the area around the harbour, keep an eye out for seals, eagles and otters. Enjoy a visit to the Gothic-style Lews Castle with its spacious grounds full of trails and offering fantastic views.

Further afield, take in the 5,000-year-old Callanish standing stones and Dun Carloway, the best-preserved Iron Age broch in Scotland. Maybe pick up a memento of Harris Tweed, which is woven here.

Islay's whiskey and nature

Fire up your spirit of discovery on 'Whisky Island'

Islay is the proud home of world-famous peaty single malts – but that's far from the only reason to visit.

Islay is also a wildlife paradise, home to over 200 species of birds – including oystercatchers, gannets and Golden Eagles. From its sandy beaches, you can sometimes spot dolphins and basking sharks.

Port Ellen is the gateway to three of the island’s nine distilleries. Of course, no trip to Islay is complete without a 'wee dram' from one of these famous and historic whisky producers, including Laphroaig and Ardbeg.

Enigmatic isle of Man

Explore Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man

The scenic approach to Douglas is not to be missed! We head ashore to explore the capital of the Isle of Man. Learn about the island’s Celtic and Viking heritage, trace its development as a Victorian tourist resort, and see its stunning rugged coastline.

There’s so much to pack into your day in Douglas. Visit the Manx Museum, check out the murals in St Thomas’s Church.

Waterford's Viking Triangle

Uncover Viking history in Ireland’s oldest city

Welcome back to Ireland - the Emerald Isle. Today you’ll set foot in the oldest city in Ireland, founded by the Vikings in the 10th century beside a ford in the River Suir. Waterford is a well preserved and very walkable small city, famed for its beautiful crystal glass production. Intricate and bold street art daubs walls and houses in this city of culture, so don’t forget your camera.

Walk around the Viking Triangle, so named for the three-sided shape made by the thousand-year-old walls that once surrounded the city.

The Isles of Scilly

Enjoy crystal waters, sandy beaches and natural beauty

Just 30 miles off the tip of Cornwall are the Isles of Scilly. This enchanting archipelago is home to some exquisite small islands. If conditions allow, we’ll split our time here. You can explore Tresco’s white sandy beaches and its renowned 19th century Abbey Gardens, or visit St Mary’s, the largest of the isles.

Alternatively, join a trip around the archipelago, visiting shipwreck sites and spying seals lying on the rocks. You'll also sail around the bird sanctuary of Annet to spot puffins and various other breeding seabirds.

The delights of Devon

Get set for historical attractions and idyllic beaches

The picturesque banks of the River Dart mark our arrival into beautiful Dartmouth. Steeped in maritime history and culture, this charming town is home to the Royal Britannia Naval College and Dartmouth Castle.

Tread the coastal paths and trails that extend along this stretch of coastline, exploring secluded coves and remote beaches. Food lovers may wish to try Dartmouth’s seafood, while those with a sweet tooth can indulge in the local fudge or the famous Devonshire cream tea.

Return to Dover

End your British Isles adventure where you began

The sight of the White Cliffs of Dover signals the end of this exploration of the British Isles. As we sail into Dover with the iconic cliffs coming into view, we’ll dock at the harbour and then it’s time to say a fond farewell to MS Maud and to all those who have made your expedition cruise so memorable.
