RALLY TO REHOUSE

A Christian Outreach serving the homeless and disadvantaged.

Welcome to The Journey Home

In 2022, we served more than 1,800 people in 1,156 households. And, because of the community’s support, The Journey Home was able to help 119 households move into housing; and an additional 247 households avoid eviction for a total of 366 households stabilized in their housing. 297 individuals received life-saving winter shelter through our Coldest Nights program and our Wellness Clinic saw and treated 127 people. We served nearly 40,000 meals this past year with the help of more than 1,000 volunteers.

Planned Giving

For Fort Worth residents who are struggling with homelessness, Presbyterian Night Shelter is a haven, offering food, shelter and the opportunity to ignite the journey from homeless to home. The shelter’s goal is to equip guests so they can successfully transition to a safe, stable and independent lifestyle, ultimately ending chronic cycles of homelessness.

If you would like to extend your support of Presbyterian Night Shelter to make a lasting impact from a will or bequest, there are a variety of ways you can do so that benefits you and your estate. Let’s  partner together to plan your legacy gift to Presbyterian Night Shelter. By documenting your intention to provide a legacy gift, you will become a member of the 1984 Legacy Society.

Ways to Give

Gifts by bequest.

A bequest is perhaps the easiest and most flexible way to have a lasting impact on Presbyterian Night Shelter. You can name the shelter as a beneficiary in your will or living trust; designate a gift of a specific dollar amount; give a particular asset; a percentage of your estate; or the remainder of your estate once all of your other bequests have been fulfilled. With a bequest, you maintain complete control of your assets during your life and can reduce income taxes, capital gains taxes and estate taxes.

For a specific bequest in wills or trusts, use the following suggested bequest language. Please share this information with your attorney or other advisor:

I give and devise to Presbyterian Night Shelter (Tax ID # 83-2124862)

Located in Fort Worth, Texas, the sum of $______ to be used for its general support (or the support of a specific fund or program).

For contingent, residual or other types of bequest language, please contact:

Brenda Rios, Vice President of Development 817-632-7414 [email protected]

Beneficiary Designations

Naming Presbyterian Night Shelter the beneficiary of many of your financial resources can be as simple as making Presbyterian Night Shelter a full or partial beneficiary of these accounts. In most cases, all you need to do is complete a revised beneficiary designation form with the company holding your assets. These can include your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement plans; bank accounts; commercial annuities; life insurance policies; and other assets. A beneficiary designation can reduce income taxes and, possibly, estate taxes for your loved ones.

Life Income Gifts

A life income gift to Presbyterian Night Shelter can be designed to produce benefits for you and Presbyterian Night Shelter at the same time. In exchange for your gift, we agree to pay you a fixed payment for life. Whatever is left will benefit Presbyterian Night Shelter. This type of gift is  particularly attractive because you often can reduce taxes, increase your spendable income and, at the same time, make a gift that will have a substantial impact on the future of Presbyterian Night Shelter. You benefit now, and we benefit later.

Gifts From Your IRA / Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

If you are 70 1/2 or older and have an IRA, you can ask your IRA administrator to make a gift of up to $100,000 per year directly to Presbyterian Night Shelter, allowing you to support the shelter and reduce your taxes at the same time. Only traditional and Roth IRAs are eligible for this type of gift. The distribution to Presbyterian Night Shelter will help satisfy your required minimum distribution (for those 72 and older) and reduce your taxable income.

Want to Know More?

Please contact us at [email protected] or 817-632-7414.

If you have included Presbyterian Night Shelter in your estate plans, please let us know. We would like to make sure the purpose of your gift is understood, thank you for your generosity, and recognize you as a member of the 1984 Legacy Society.

Journey Home is a comprehensive and supportive program for individuals experiencing homelessness . Journey Home is designed to provide a safe place for unsheltered persons to reside as they are connected to supportive services. Access to resources such as employment, mental health services and supplemental assistance will reduce many of the barriers which prevent individuals from obtaining and maintaining permanent housing.

Journey Home has an Emergency Shelter, transitional housing units, and helps clients find and maintain permanent housing . Journey Home, First Presbyterian Church, Bethany Lutheran Church, and other organizations in town have partnered with Katy Trails Community Health to bring affordable or free medical care to Warrensburg through a mobile clinic each Tuesday. Every Thursday, Katy Trails or the Compass Health Network provide affordable or free dental care. Tuesday & Thursday, Journey Home organizes a breakfast and hot lunch at First Presbyterian Church of Warrensburg for the community, but especially for those in need. First Presbyterian Church is open from 8AM-3PM on Tuesday & Thursday. The Shop is another mission of Journey Home. The Shop takes donated household items and offers them for free to the community on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 1PM-4PM.

Journey Home is not the project of any particular organization or church, but is intended to be a place of support which is strongly endorsed and maintained by the Johnson County community . The board is seeking grant opportunities, however commitment from the community to maintain the program through donations, financial contributions, and volunteer involvement is an absolute necessity if the program is to be sustainable long term.

If you, your church, or your group/organization are interested in helping Journey Home, please visit our Shelter page, JCRC page, and The Shop pages for opportunities and continue reading below to see other donation links!

Leading the Effort to End Homelessness in the Capital Region of Connecticut

At Journey Home, we believe that everyone deserves to feel the comfort and safety of home.

Homelessness is a complicated and expensive social problem.

Without coordinating all available programs and services:.

  • Responses are siloed
  • Efforts get duplicated
  • Dollars are wasted

Journey Home coordinates the Capital Region’s system for ending homelessness. We guide the efforts between service providers, government agencies, businesses, and local communities to achieve enduring, systemic change.

How Journey Home is Making a Difference

Our mission is to ensure a home for all.

We’ve spent more than a decade committed to ending homelessness in Connecticut’s Capital region by applying sustainable solutions to the barriers that create cycles of homelessness.

Every day, we work to:

  • Prevent as many people as possible from losing their housing
  • Increase the speed at which we find housing for anyone who is already experiencing homelessness
  • Help folks move into their homes and provide the furnishings and services they need to never become homeless again

Richard Buckminster Fuller says, “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”

For Connecticut, that new model is the Coordinated Access Network, a way for people who are experiencing homelessness to access housing and support services in a standardized and organized way. It involves having clear protocols, assessment tools, and agreed-upon priorities within the community that serves homeless individuals.

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”

–Richard Buckminster Fuller

The Results (So Far)

Decrease in the number of people experiencing chronic homelessness since 2015, journey home mission: our mission is to ensure a home for all..

We believe the most powerful way to do this is collectively - by working together with service providers, elected officials, businesses and local communities to end homelessness in the Capital region of Connecticut. We will build partnerships, advance innovative solutions and achieve enduring, systemic change.

Boston Dynamics retires original Atlas humanoid robot after more than 10 years

Boston Dynamics said its original hydraulic Atlas robot has been retired after it was first...

(TMX) -- Boston Dynamics on Wednesday unveiled the latest version of its Atlas humanoid robot, featuring an upgrade from hydraulic actuation to fully electric, and designed for real-world applications.

The first Atlas robot debuted in 2013, originally developed for search and rescue operations and funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). That iteration was a hulking 6 feet, 2 inches tall, weighing 330 pounds, and although it could move independently, it had to be tethered to a power source.

More than a decade later, the hydraulic Atlas has been retired , and the fully electric Atlas is set to begin its journey in the real world with automaker Hyundai.

“In addition to investing in us, the Hyundai team is building the next generation of automotive manufacturing capabilities, and it will serve as a perfect testing ground for new Atlas applications,” Boston Dynamics said in a blog post.

Boston Dynamics previously released its Spot and Stretch robots commercially. The company said its Atlas rollout will be similar to that of Stretch, with a “small group of innovative customers” testing Atlas over the next few years, beginning with Hyundai.

The new Atlas is stronger than the most recent iteration of the hydraulic Atlas, and has a broader range of motion. But it’s still being improved, with engineers exploring “several new gripper variations” to meet diverse customer needs.

Boston Dynamics said commercial deployment is about more than just the robot, however, “requiring IT infrastructure, employee buy-in, connectivity, workflows, safety standards, and operational processes for the robots and the data they generate and rely on.”

The company learned about the necessity of broader digital transformation with Spot, which has seen more than 1,500 deployments so far, perhaps most famously with police departments around the country.

Along with upgraded hardware, the new Atlas benefits from upgraded software, making use of recent advancements in AI and machine learning tools, including reinforcement learning and computer vision.

Boston Dynamics’ new Orbit software provides a centralized platform for managing entire robot fleets, site maps and data. While it currently only supports Spot robots, Stretch and Atlas will soon be integrated, the company said.
