6 Best Places for Kayaking in Oregon: A Wild and Scenic Tour

kayak trips oregon

I dip a blade into the river and am bathed in purity, as I imagine it feels to be plunged into Juan Ponce de León’s mythical long lost fountain of youth.

The icy spring-fed stream, in the middle of summer’s heat, is pulsing with runoff that crests the brim of my kayak and buffets my strokes. Every splash or involuntary capsize rejuvenates the spirit and, I like to think, restores my crows feet and creaky bones.

It’s something about the water. Maybe it’s in my blood.

As an Oregon native reaching back at least five generations, I know many of my grandmothers loved the rivers as much as I do; water skiing, catching crawdads and swimming the waterways kept them as young at heart as they keep me.

While all sorts of activities along the water’s edge can be soothing to the soul, there’s no replacement for the intimacy felt by kayaking in Oregon. And I am pretty sure if you take your own dip in our local drink, you’ll agree.

Kayaker relaxing along the Oregon Coast

The Wild and Scenic Kayaking in Oregon

Oregon is world-renown for its prolific and pristine waterways. In fact, the state has the most Wild and Scenic river mileage in the lower 48 (2,173 miles to be exact), owing partly to the progressive-and-preservation-minded constituents. It’s also worth noting, Oregon seems geographically precocious when it comes to this type of terrain.

In addition to the fresh waters that hug their way down scenic mountains, gorges and canyons, the state is bordered by the Pacific Ocean. In between you’ll find alpine, desert and temperate forest, along with plenty of lakes to kayak in Oregon. Sometimes these are standalone units to paddle and sometimes they give way to each other along the trace of a river or coastline.

From the basalt rock river beds of Central Oregon to the lava tube river tunnels of the High Cascades, the unmatched scenery is what keeps me looking for the best places to kayak in Oregon. And where to kayak in Oregon is exactly what I will share with you.

1. Deschutes River, Central Oregon

Man kayaking along the Deschutes River in Oregon, between grassy banks.

I hail from Central Oregon and one of the reasons I moved there was all the great paddling accessible by way of the Deschutes River. From easy access day trips on the town section to remote multi-day excursions, there are kayak trips for everyone.

An oasis

The Deschutes River is a lush refuge in the arid and harsh high desert. Towering ponderosa pines and aspen groves line the banks intermingling with fairly fresh (according to geologic time) sharp ah-ah lava—flows which oozed from the Newberry Formation thousands of years ago. This lava creates an intricate network of tubes—bridges or tunnels—and bedrock which the river flows in and out of numerous times on its path to the mouth of the Columbia River.

During your time on the water you are sure to see great blue heron, osprey, belted kingfisher, beaver, otters, deer and even bighorn sheep in some locales, along with relics from by-gone railroad and timber operations.

Thrills accessible from town and beyond

Much of the river from its headwaters at Lava Lake to its middle section at Cline Falls State Park is flat water and easily navigable. My favorite stretch is central to Bend and located right in the middle of town: Riverbend Park to Bill Healy Bridge . This area can be paddled year round and is ideal in the summer. It is 1-2 miles one-way and is very accessible to newbies (note that if you’re just getting into the sport, you’ll want to read my kayaking tips for beginners to help you get started).

If you want to challenge yourself with a small thrill, paddle as far upstream from Riverbend Park as possible, until you hit a natural Class 1 rapid just upstream of Bill Healy Bridge. Try ferrying in and out of the small currents all channelized by fallen rocks and boulders in the river profile. Be ready for a fish tale or possible capsize. Consider wearing a skirt and helmet.

The Bend Paddle Trail Alliance has a map/booklet which outlines the best places to flatwater paddle on the Deschutes River, especially on the upper reaches. The map is available for purchase at the Bend local paddle shop, Tumalo Creek Kayak and Canoe , as well as retail and hired

Fall. Central Oregon often has beautiful Indian summers filled with warm weather and colorful foliage

Depending on where you access the Deschutes River a Deschutes Forest National Forest Pass may be necessary. For details on keeping the Deschutes River healthy see the Deschutes River Watershed Council page

Accommodations are offered all over Bend. For the budget visitor Bunk and Brew Historic Lucas House is the hostel for you. You may even find a kayaking friend to paddle with there. Once you’re unpacked and settled in, go for a short walk to find one of three breweries downtown or one of the other 14 in and around Bend. My personal favorite spot for microbrews and crowd pleasing pub fare is Brother Johns (a nickname for Mount Bachelor, the Cascade peak from which much snow melt fuels the Deschutes). Or, try Deschutes Brewery, named for the river, obviously

2. Rogue River, Southern Oregon

kayaking the Rogue River

The Rogue River is the quintessential experience for kayaking in Southern Oregon. An original Wild and Scenic river designated for protection in 1968, the Rogue tends to define the pristine and untouched aesthetic kayakers seek.

A historic river known the world over

In the Siskiyou Mountains and Kalmiopsis Wilderness, the Rogue River has some of the most beautiful scenery of any river, in the state, or even the world over. Smooth and dark Madrone trees, various types of towering oaks and lush wildflowers all adorn a steep, and oftentimes, cliffed out river bank.

Stops at Whiskey Creek Cabin, Zane Gray’s Cabin at Winkle Bar and Rogue River Ranch—all in the National Historic Registry—are just a handful of the sites and buildings preserved by the Bureau of Land Management.

You can see it all in 3-5 days

The best way to see all 35 miles of the wild and scenic Rogue is on a commercial multi day river trip with a professional outfitter like OARS , the one I guide with. Recommended vessel? An inflatable kayak. Why commercial? The trip requires a lot of logistics and extensive gear. While some folks do organize private trips, they are incredibly experienced boaters. For most, a commercial trip is the best route.

An inflatable is my recommendation

Whitewater can be a tricky type of water to navigate in a rigid kayak. A traditional kayak requires expertise, like knowing how to roll and other maneuvers, for example, while an inflatable kayak is incredibly forgiving to a novice. It’s possible to traverse the Rogue River in a raft, but you’ll see and feel so much more navigating a smaller, more nimble vessel.

A range of rapids

On the trip you’ll experience all the rapids, from class I to class IV up close and personal with the watchful eye of professional raft guides hot on your tail in case anything goes sideways. Going into each rapid you and the other kayakers receive beta (or directions) from a guide and then try your hand at the rapid yourself. Meanwhile the guides carry all your belongings, food, camp equipment and everything but the kitchen sink on the rafts. The guides set up camp and cook the meals while you splish and splash.

Fine for beginners

Completely untrained novices sign-up for commercial inflatable kayak river trips all the time. During the most recent trip I guided, I inflatable kayaked Blossom Bar (class IV) for the first time. Guests aren’t allowed to kayak it (though they are allowed to paddle nearly everything else on the river) because it’s such a consequential rapid. Instead, guides paddle the kayaks past the biggest portion of the rapid called “the move” to ducky beach where guests are invited to get back in the yaks.

Initially I was incredibly intimidated but with a recent drop by a magnitude of 2,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) in water level, I found that the rapid was much easier in an inflatable kayak (than a raft) and I will be stoked to kayak the entire river someday soon.

Summer time. While the fall and spring are nice as well, the weather isn’t as consistent. You may experience the cold, rain, snow or all three

If you go with a commercial trip they will handle the permitting. If you go with a private group you will need to apply for a permit or get a cancellation permit at Rand

Many people fish on the Rogue River, typically on drift boat trips. For food and drink check out the west coasts famous In and Out Burger in Grants Pass. A quick stop into Sawyer Paddles and Oars in Gold Hill is also worth the thrill of seeing the digs of a homegrown southern Oregon paddle company. They can also outfit paddlers with last minute supplies

From Portland head South on I-5. From California, head North on I-5. Take the Merlin Road, exit 61. Stay in Galice or head all the way to the launch site at Grave Creek

3. Willamette River, Willamette River Valley

Panoramic view of Portland, Oregon, with the Willamette River in the foreground and Mount Hood in the back.

The Willamette is a 187 mile river which drains the northwest quadrant of Oregon through its floodplain, the Willamette Valley. This river valley is incredibly fertile making it for great agriculture including many vineyards, and it touches numerous cities on the I5 corridor. The Willamette is a thread of connectivity for anyone in its vicinity. It also goes right through downtown Portland, reminding me of Chicago River, one of the best kayaking spots near Chicago , although with fewer crowds.

Disneyland for boaters

Further up in the watershed there are some stout whitewater runs housed in a multitude of forks that attract hardshell enthusiasts (the real deal, big kid rapid-runners). Down river, towards the mouth, the Willamette is a haven for water skiers, trollers and other motorboatists.

The down river can be affected by the coastal pressure cells, gails and tides that ride upriver through the Columbia and haunt the confluence point near Sauvies Island, an area that doesn’t quite qualify as sea kayaking, but tidal and brackish all the same. Scappoose Bay makes a nice and super mellow half-day kayaking outing if you’re in the area.

Retrace the steps (and paddle strokes) of early settlers

When I think of the Willamette River, I think of fertile soils growing grapes for wine and monuments to historic events like Champoeg State Heritage Area . Kalapuya Indians, fur trappers, explorers and settlers all passed through the Willamette River Valley and you can retrace some of their steps by kayaking from Champoeg to Canby Ferry, perhaps a 5 mile jaunt down river.

Accessible terrain

This stretch of river has no whitewater though it is deep and wide. Not only does a Champoeg launch give you the chance to camp on-site and explore the park’s offerings like Manson Barn and Farmstead (a 1860s-style garden and barn) and the Pioneer Memorial Building (a pavilion and plaza on the banks of the Willamette marks the site of the famous 1843 vote that formed the first government in the Northwest), there are gorgeous wild pheasants roaming the premises and tons of facilities and amenities to be taken advantage of.

Having grown up in the Willamette Valley myself, just a stone’s throw away from Champoe in southwest Portland, the river holds lots of meaning. The McKenzie River, mentioned later in this article, drains into the Willamette and it connects to the Columbia which the Deschutes drains into. The Willamette has been a thoroughfare since the days of yore in what is now the I-5 corridor. It’s a common ground—or common waters oasis—that has connected river recreationalists, sleepy farm operators and urban commerce movers and shakers since time immemorial.

When I think of the Willamette River, I think of the Kalapuya Indians, fur trappers, explorers and settlers that all passed through the region.

4. Columbia River, Columbia River Gorge in Northern Oregon

Fall colors among the trees alongside the Columbia River.

Scoured out by a flood of epic proportions, the Columbia River Gorge has a magnificence and grandeur rarely matched in the states, let alone the world. Paddling below its towering layers of basalt and paleo soils on either bank makes you feel infinitely small in the best possible way. There are innumerable put-ins and take-outs along the river, while the same is true for campsites at state parks, scenic viewing stops and other historic and interpretive points of interest.

Early explorers

Pre-Lewis and Clark, the reputation of Columbia River preceded it—select settlers in explorative circles on the east coast heard whispers of a massive water thoroughfare known as the River Oregon. When explorers like Peter Skene Ogden and David Douglas experienced the river, their records noted a cosmopolitan causeway with trading posts consisting of elaborate native commerce piggybacked by trappers. Innumerable languages were spoken and goods of all kinds proffered.

When I am kayaking in the gorge, I like to think about early peoples navigating the same waters by canoe, not for overblown romantic purposes but for business endeavors on behalf of their communities and families. Commuting back and forth as business professionals in their own right.

From my father to me to you

My favorite route to kayak was shown to me by my father—and that was shown to him by a long lost high school sweetheart (although he would never admit that). The put-in is at Rowena Ferry Road which terminates north on a peninsula jutting out into the Columbia River towards the Klickitat River on the opposite side of the gorge in Washington.

The crossing can take between 20 and 30 minutes in favorable conditions. Once on the other side, the mouth of the Klickitat River can shift and change between visits. Sometimes much sediment is built up and one might need to walk their kayak. When my father and I made the trip we found many birds and many blackberries.

Remember , you have to get back too

On the paddle back, white caps on the river had kicked up and the waters were far more rough than at the onset. It took us more like an hour to get back. During the return ferry my father was a bit ghost-faced and was white knuckling the paddle for fear of a capsize. Keep this in mind and be sure you are confident in your ability to traverse rough waters.

Despite the possibility of choppy and difficult conditions, I like this kayaking trip because I am most certain many before me had to venture across the Columbia in similar and worst circumstances. Imagining what those folks went through makes me appreciate modern gear, radar and instantaneous moment-to-moment weather reports.

I like to think about early peoples navigating the same waters by canoe, not for overblown romantic purposes but for business endeavors on behalf of their communities and families.

5. McKenzie River, Cascade Range

Whitewater Kayaking the crystal clear waters of the McKenzie River

The McKenzie River is a great place to crossover into whitewater. Just ask any Oregonian, and like me, they’ll say this is where they experienced their first rapids.

Dip your toes into whitewater

If you’re looking to challenge yourself and move from flat water to light whitewater, the McKenzie River from Forest Glen to Silver Creek is the perfect spot. The best part? There is actually an inflatable kayak on the market named the McKenzie , intended for this exact purpose. It comes in a single and a tandem, in case you want to brave things with a buddy. Coincidence, I think not?

Forest Glen to Silver Creek: Beginner friendly

Deep in the Cascade Range, meandering through basalt tunnels and popping in and out of the surface, until a recent forest fire, the McKenzie was also hidden in a shroud of underbrush. Post-fire it’s far more exposed and easy to scout from the highway that parallels it. The friendliest stretch to try your hand at whitewater on is Forest Glen to Silver Creek. The rapids top out at class II+ even during spring high water. That being said, check flows through American Whitewater and call the local ranger station for updates if it’s your first run. Note that wood or newly fallen trees can be a particular hazard in the spring—and anytime of year.

What you’ll love about this stretch as a beginner is that there are pools between each rapid so in the event a capsize occurs, you’ll have plenty of time to self-rescue and get back in your boat. Rapids like Frogger, Eagle Rock and Screamer will challenge your limits but are totally accessible to the well prepared novice.

Keep challenging yourself upstream

Once you’ve mastered this stretch, pick away at sections up river. The further you move up river, the more you will challenge yourself. I learned to whitewater kayak in this exact way with the help of Tumalo Creek Kayak and Canoe, mentioned earlier in the article.

6. Clackamas River, Northwest Oregon

A kayaker navigating big whitewater on the Clackamas River

Located on the west side of the Cascade Range, the forests surrounding the Clackamas River are green and full of diverse plant life. The Clackamas is known as a classic Pacific Northwest River with great, intermediate Class III hydraulics in its upper reaches. On the lower plains, before the Clackamas outlets into the Columbia, the river calms and is ideal for floating or kayaking.

An epicenter of boating culture

Annually, the Clackamas River hosts Clack Fest , a boating festival with head-to-head, slalom and downriver races. In addition, the middle Clackamas is a favorite for sessioning and playboating, a form of kayaking where the boater faces upstream and practices doing tricks while surfing a wave or hydraulic.

Before kayakers sought out the Clackamas as a whitewater haven, 10,000 years ago it was inhabited year-round by Native American hunters, fishers and gatherers. Since that time the land near the river has been sold for logging purposes and even to early railroad companies. Most recently PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric Company) has used the watershed for hydraulic power gathered through dams.

Dipping your toe in

Perhaps even more accessible than the novice-friendly McKenzie River run mentioned earlier, is the Clackamas section from Barton Park to Carver. Rated as a class II and only 5 miles long, this is a great stretch to get started on whitewater. Consider an inflatable kayak unless you already have experience in a hard shell.

While traveling down the river you may find you are accompanied by floaters. Although the stretch is lined in parts with houses, because of a dense forest it doesn’t have the urban feel of the Willamette. This is a very popular stretch after work or in the evening when the lighting permits. Since the river is fed in part by spring run off, expect it to feel more like Class II+ in the spring and more like Class II- in the summer. There may be times in the summer when flows are too low for the river to be navigable, hence its popularity with floaters.

Additional Information to Know About Kayaking in Oregon

There are a few things you’ll want to note about kayaking in Oregon before setting your GPS for Portland and heading out on the open road. Here’s a quick and dirty of must knows before you go.

Do you need a permit to kayak in Oregon?

Each river stretch likely has its own permitting system. Some might require a forest service or parks pass while others may require a recreation pass specific to the water way. A good way to check is by calling the local land manager directly or checking American Whitewater , which notes all stretches of water navigable in the U.S, current hazards and flows. The latter two bits of information are also important research before getting on the water.

Invasive Species Permit

A Waterway Access Permit is required for non-motorized boats 10 feet and longer. The Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Permit is included in Waterway Access Permits are required for paddle craft 10 feet and longer, and an out-of-state aquatic invasive species permit is required for motorized boats operating in Oregon waterways.

Safety: Wear your life jacket!

Bring and wear a life jacket or personal flotation device when you are kayaking. U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in 81% of recreational boating fatalities in 2021, and that 83% of those who drowned were not wearing a life jacket.

Remember your Leave No Trace principles

It’s best to take only memories and leave nothing behind while in the wilderness, on a protected river or outside anywhere. Check out the link for details!

A Refresher

Kayaking in Oregon is widely considered the pinnacle when it comes to paddling in the U.S. (to take nothing away from all the places to kayak in Florida , Colorado or elsewhere). Part of this is the many Wild and Scenic waterway designations and the rest is the nature of the landscape and countryside. Beaches, mountains, deserts and every type of terrain in between is woven with rivers, lakes and the sea.

If you haven’t dipped a kayak blade into an Oregon waterway and enjoyed the nurturing sway yet, I highly suggest you give it a taste. Who knows, you might just find your own fountain of youth.

Our 2-hour tours run Tuesday through Sunday starting at 9 AM , 12 PM , 3 PM , and 6 PM . Our 6 PM tours are by request only and we'll need at least 4 participants and 48 hours prior notice. Whether you want to go for a quiet morning paddle or watch the sun set behind the historic Yaquina Bay bridge, we'll help you craft an unforgettable trip.

What To Bring

Our guided kayak tours run “rain or shine”, so you'll want to be prepared for the conditions on the day of your tour. Your feet will definitely get a little wet. Paddle jackets and pants are provided (in limited sizes) . We recommend the following items:

  • Footwear that can get wet.
  • Quick dry clothing (cotton is not recommended) .
  • Extra layers (a windbreaker or rain jacket/pants) .
  • Waterproof case for your smartphone and/or camera.
  • Gratuity for your guide (optional, but appreciated) .

How To Find Us

Our tours launch from our boathouse located at Port Dock 7 in Newport, Oregon. Parking is available at the Port of Newport (with a parking pass that we'll provide you) , with additional on-street parking on SE Bay Blvd. Please remember that Newport is a working port, so we ask that you be respectful and park closest to the street so that fishermen have priority access.

Once you have arrived, simply go down the access ramp to the docks, and take an immediate left at the bottom of the ramp (at the seafood barge) . Walk past the sailboats and we're the first boathouse that you come upon.

Cancellation Policy

We require at least 24 hours cancellation notice prior to your scheduled tour, or we cannot provide a refund. All of our tours are weather dependent, and may be cancelled due to inclement weather or other unsafe conditions. If your scheduled tour is cancelled due to weather or safety concerns, you'll receive a full refund.

Common Questions

Yes. All guests must sign a liability waiver in order to participate. Parents will need to sign a waiver for any guests that are under 18 years old. We recommend signing the waiver electronically ahead of time.

Parking is available at the Port of Newport (with a parking pass we'll provide you) , with additional on-street parking on SE Bay Blvd. Please remember that Newport is a working port, so we ask that you be respectful and park closest to the street so that the fishermen who work at Port Dock 7 have priority access.

Our kayak tours run “rain or shine”, so you'll want to be prepared for the conditions on the day of your tour. If your scheduled tour is cancelled due to weather or safety concerns, you'll receive a full refund.

Yes. We have lockers available and someone will either be present at the boathouse or it will be locked during your tour. You are welcome to bring your own padlock if you prefer a bit more security.

Yes. Individuals weighing more than 300 lbs should not participate. This is because our life jackets are only rated to provide buoyancy for persons up to 300 lbs .

The kayaks we use are Ocean Kayak Malibu Two tandems, which have a usable weight limit of 362 lbs per boat. We suggest that anyone over 200 lbs get in touch with us prior to booking. If you and your paddle partner together weigh more than 350 lbs , we may put you in a boat alone.

While we understand that many people enjoy paddling with their furry friends, we do not allow any animals in our kayaks.

In accordance with ADA guidelines , we do allow service dogs that are individually trained to assist a person with a disability in our boathouse.

No. Since there are other people on the tour, we do not allow fishing or crabbing gear on our tours. However, the route that we take isn't the best fishing or crabbing location anyway 😀.

Unfortunately, we do not rent out our kayaks. However, there are other options. Both Ossie's Surf Shop in Newport and Oregon Coast Kayak Connection offer kayak and paddleboard rentals.

Tillamook Coast

Kayaking on the Oregon Coast

Tillamook Coast Kayaking

There are great spots to get out on the water all over the TIllamook Coast. Whatever your level—longtime landlubber or paddling pro—you have options here.

The north fork of the Nehalem River converges with Nehalem Bay near Nehalem . You can start at either the Nehalem or Wheeler Marina. It is a great paddle for beginners and intermediate paddlers who want to explore the scenic coastal waterways. As you paddle along the Nehalem River, watch cormorants and harbor seals fishing, Chinook salmon jumping, and sea birds flying by. The bay is close enough to the Pacific Ocean to give you a little push up the river’s north fork during some incoming tides. Riding the tide is one of the benefits of coastal paddling.

A paddle in Rockaway Beach or Garibaldi offers views of a sheltered cove, perfect for beginners, and nestled at the foothills. The Three Graces are large stoned outcroppings between Rockaway Beach and Garibaldi that offer fantastic views as you glide by. There is also a small stream off Rockaway Beach that joins the two bodies of water of Lake Lytle and Crescent Lake.

The Tillamook Bay watershed links five distinctive rivers together: the Miami River, The Kilchis River, The Wilson River, The Trask River and the Tillamook River. Put in at either Tillamook or Bay City to experience a low impact way of viewing this amazing waterway system.

Other places to kayak in Tillamook County include:

Netarts Bay and Cape Meares Lake; which are near Netarts , Oceanside , and Cape Meares . Sand Lake, Nestucca Bay, Little Nestucca River, Nestucca River and Salmon River are near Pacific City and Neskowin. With its seven- estuary system featuring six bays and over 800 miles of tidally influenced river systems it is sure to delight any paddler. You will also paddle upon clandestine sloughs and backwater channels to further enhance your flat-water experience.

For starters

Don’t have your own kayak and want some help getting going? Kayak Tillamook is an authentic guide service with strong environmental ethics that offers service in Tillamook County, providing year-round flat-water tours on lakes, bays, rivers and sloughs throughout the region. They lead tours throughout the region and prioritize making the trek comfortable for anyone—novices can safely test the waters on a group tour. Experienced guides make kayaking a fun and accessible sport to try, and as long as you bundle up, you can head out year-round. The company even brings along thermoses of hot apple cider in winter, to keep you warm from the inside out. Coupled with the right gear, and paddling hard enough to work up a sweat, you’ll stay warm throughout the trip!

What to know before you go

With a little preparation, kayaking is a fantastic, leisurely way to experience the beauty of our region. Make sure you dress warmly enough that you’ll be OK in the event of a capsize. Avoid cotton, which will soak up water like a sponge, and put on swimwear as your base layer. Other general necessities that will make your trip more comfortable:

  • Sun protection (think sunglasses, sunblock, a good hat)—remember, you can burn even on a cloudy day!
  • Gloves (ward off blisters and insulate fingers from the wind)
  • Water trail map (see below)
  • Insect repellent
  • Water bottle
  • First aid kit
  • Waterproof bag (preferably one that floats!)

Consider how long your trip is going to be, and pack more food/water/clothing layers accordingly. And make sure you tell someone on shore your itinerary.

One oar two?

Once you’ve prepped on every other front, there’s the actual boat to consider. Buy or rent one, then decide if you want to head out alone or take a lesson to get the basics down. The Coast has great options for each of these, and experts at stores, rental facilities and guide agencies who will help you get what you need.

And if you’re heading out with a buddy, you have the option of paddling in your own boats or sharing a tandem kayak to build your teamwork skills. But keep in mind that while a tandem looks like double the fun, it can be (a bit more than) double the work, too. While solo kayaks are light and maneuverable in the water, tandems are quite a bit heavier; their shape and size can make balancing a little tougher. It’s also worth noting double-seaters require pretty seamless harmony between the two paddlers—they are casually (and caustically) referred to as “divorce boats” for the discord they’re known to cause between rowing mates. That said, plenty of pairs like the added challenge of working in synchrony. Know yourself and your companion, and choose what suits you best.

As long as you’ve planned ahead, you’re ready to have a great time kayaking the Oregon Coast! Come to Tillamook County for the experience of a lifetime.

Formed by the now-collapsed volcano, Mount Mazama, Crater Lake is spectacular in the winter and summer. Our guides will take you on the West Rim Drive road surrounding the lake, offering scenic views of the water and the park’s volcanic formations in all of their winter glory.

Whatever adventure you choose, you will always see a diversity of wildlife, especially birds. The Upper Klamath Basin has 2/3's of the birds on the Pacific Flyway migratory route stopping here throughout the year. We have seen and categorized over 120 different species on the Williamson River alone! You might also see River Otters, Beavers, Turtles, or other animals that come down to the water's edge, such as Coyotes, Foxes, Mink, Weasels, etc.

Shuttle Services

We make it easy! Our shuttle rig operates in the Upper Klamath Basin and can haul up to 18 kayaks in one trip to get you on the water. When you rent a paddle craft, for a small fee, we will deliver the boat to the waters you will be on, when you finish, we will come and pick up the boats and shuttle you back to your launch location if need be.

Are you not using our gear? That's ok; we'll help you with a shuttle too. When you plan your trip, arrange with us to be picked up and shuttled back to your vehicle, then enjoy your trip knowing we will be there to pick you up.

Kayak Cleaning Services

The waterways in the Upper Klamath Basin are some of the most nearly pristine in the nation. Oregon law requires watercraft to be clean when going from one waterway to another. Invasive species and organisms can hitch a ride on a dirty boat. We offer a kayak cleaning service at our location in Chiloquin to help you keep your kayaks clean. We clean all of our paddle crafts thoroughly after each use and have done thousands of cleanings. We suggest you clean your kayaks before entering any new waterway. We only charge $10.00 per kayak.

We welcome large groups!! We can place up to 30 kayaks on the water for larger group events. We love working with kids to see them experience a new activity and enhance their learning. We have put together many school field trip outings, wilderness schools events, corporate team-building retreats, and youth group events We can help you and your large group enjoy a fantastic outdoor fun-filled kayaking day.

We are Dedicated to your Satisfaction!

So you have never been in a kayak but want to learn. We can help! The waters that we paddle on are mostly pretty flat and offer ideal conditions for the beginner. Some waterways are for the more adventurous, but our experienced guides and staff can give you the kayaking lessons you need.  We can provide you with kayak lessons while in a group or one-on-one session.

Some places to enjoy in the upper klamath basin, map of the upper basin.

The Upper Klamath Basin has some of the most pristine waters in Oregon, originating in the Cascade Mountain Range, which includes Crater Lake National Park and the Upper Klamath Basin, where these waters form the Klamath River and flow to the Pacific Ocean.

The Wood River

For the intermediate kayaker. You can start at Jackson F. Kimball State Park near Fort Klamath, and float the Wood River through the Wetlands and out onto Agency Lake. An awesome nature viewing, 6+ mile journey. Or ride bikes around the secluded wetlands and enjoy the area by land.

The Williamson River

Spring creek & collier park.

One of the favorite rivers in our area to enjoy kayaks on is The Williamson River. At its starting point, coming straight out of the ground, it's beauty is unmatched as well as the World Class Trout Fishing it has to offer.

Upper Klamath Lake & Agency Lake

For the beginner kayaker. Starting as a spring who's water originates from below Crater Lake National Park, Spring Creek, located at Collier State Park has some of the most beautiful clear waters in the Klamath Basin. And you will see beautiful Osprey's and Eagles who call this place home.

Upper Klamath Lake is the largest body of water in all of Oregon so there is lots to see. On the upper end it converges with Agency Lake with the Wood River flowing into Agency Lake. A bird watchers paradise! Heron's, Pelican's, Eagles, Gulls and allot more.

Guide To Kayaking In Oregon (Some Fishing Too!)

With a brilliantly diverse landscape, the Northwestern state of Oregon is a fantastic place for outdoor pursuits. The Beaver State has plenty of water, including the USA’s deepest lake, so finding a great spot to paddle shouldn’t be too difficult.

But to help guide you to some of the best spots for kayaking in Oregon, we’ve put together some useful information that you might find handy when planning your next trip.

Table of Contents

Why Oregon?

Oregon is known for its wide range of landscapes, which includes a North Pacific coastline, forests, mountains and deserts. The state has borders with Washington in the north, Idaho to the east and California and  Nevada  to the south.

As well as this, there’s an abundance of lakes and rivers, so it can be a great place to get out and  enjoy the wilderness in your kayak , whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure.

As well as this, there’s an abundance of lakes and rivers, so it can be a great place to get out and  enjoy the wilderness in your kayak , whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure.

Best Time Of The Year To Go?

While many of the lakes and rivers can be paddled all year round, you may find it more comfortable during the warmer summer seasons. From spring through summer and fall can often be the  most busy time of the year  for watersports due to the warmer weather and summer vacations.

The colder weather in the winter may mean that you might need to wear a wetsuit or take additional precautions in the event that you get wet.

You could potentially  fish all year round in Oregon , but if you have your eye on a particular species of fish, it might be a good idea to check with local experts before you head out.

Top Spots To Go Paddling In The State Of Oregon

Deschutes river.

Just a short distance east of the Portland area you’ll find the Deschutes River. The river flows north through central Oregon, with the lower section being designated a Wild and Scenic River.

As well as being scenic, the river is also steeped in history, with links to Native Americans and 19th century pioneers. The river is also a popular place for fishing, with trout and salmon being frequent catches.

The Deschutes can be run at any time of year because of the consistent water flow and there are a mixture of  Class I to Class VI rapids . There are various sections that can become busy during the peak summer season with kayakers, anglers, and  paddle boarders . There are also several kayaking and whitewater rafting companies in the area because of the whitewater runs.

Video: Half Day Kayak Canoe and SUP Deschutes River Tour

There are  p lenty of access points  along the Deschutes, with services and recreational facilities in the towns of Bend and Maupin. You will also find campsites around Maupin and towards the  mouth of the river  as it meets the Columbia River.

Video: Deschutes River – Whitewater Kayaking

Devil’s Lake

Not far from the center of Lincoln City, on the Pacific coast, just west of Salem, is Devil’s Lake. There are places to camp in  Devil’s Lake State Park , where you will also find access to the lake.

The lake also has a very small river that leads to the Pacific Ocean, although it’s too small to be paddled. The lake itself can be a good place for beginners because of its calm waters.

Devil’s Lake can be a great place to spot wildlife, as there is a wide range of bird species, as well as deer and elk in the area.

Tualatin River

Just southwest of Portland is the Tualatin River, which has a 40 mile long Water Trail that can be easily paddled by families and beginners, as well as anyone with an interest in wildlife.

The Tualatin River flows through several small towns and private property but also runs through the  Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge . The wildlife refuge is home to many species of birds, mammals, fish and plants, so can be a great place to paddle through if you like to take photographs.

The river is slow moving and  can even be paddled upstream . However, during the winter the higher water levels and log jams may make the route a little more hazardous.

There are several access points along the river, some with restrooms and facilities and others a little less equipped. The Tualatin River runs into the  Willamette River , which can also be paddled but you should be aware that many motorized vessels will likely be sharing the water with you.

The Tualatin River is also a good choice if you’re looking to fish, as it’s popular for trout and  bass fishing .

Is Kayak Fishing Popular In Oregon?

With Oregon having lots of rivers and lakes, not to mention the Pacific Ocean, it’s no surprise that there are also plenty of places to fish. One thing that you will need before you head out, however, is an  Oregon Angling License  to allow you to attempt to catch fish.

If you’re looking to  take your kayak out in the ocean for some fishing , Sunset Bay State Park can be a good spot. It has sandy beaches and a calm bay, for easy launching. Sunset Bay is located on the coast, around a two and half hour drive southwest of Eugene.

There are plenty of  spots to go fishing near Portland , with one being Scappoose Bay; around 30 minutes north of the city. The marina at Scappoose Bay has boating access and kayak rentals. The bay has access to the Multnomah Channel and the Columbia River and you can catch a variety of fish, from largemouth  bass  and bluegill to  crappie  and bullhead.

No matter where in Oregon you plan to fish you need to make sure you stick to the  rules for fishing limits .

Are There Kayak Laws For Oregon?

  • PFDs  – You must have a wearable US Coast Guard approved life jacket on board for  each person . The PFD must be of a suitable size for the wearer and be easily accessible.
  • Children under 13  must wear a US Coast Guard approved PFD while on board any kayak.
  • Visual Distress Signals  are required to be carried while kayaking on coastal waters after sunset and before sunrise.
  • Sound Producing Device  – you are required to carry a whistle while kayaking on Oregon waters.
  • Waterway Access Permit  – all non-motorized boats 10 feet or longer are required to have a Waterway Access Permit. This is required for both coastal and inland waters. There is a fine of $115 if you fail to carry this.
  •   Pull The Plug  – all vessels are required to be drained on leaving any body of water. You could be fined $30 if you don’t drain your kayak.

We had such a great time! Guides, Marcus and Emilee were knowledgeable, helpful and made the adventure a great experience. I was nervous heading out on the ocean, but they helped make it a fun and relaxing experience. Saw seals, cormorants, and a variety of other sea life. It was a great morning!

GET ON THE LAKE IN OREGON WITH JO PADDLE!

Josh was great and it was so refreshing to hang out with someone who takes pride in his community and family. Be sure to book your trip at the beginning of your stay in the Wallowa’s so you can get the run down from Josh on all the best things to do, trails to hike, and local “hot spots”. Ok. No real hot spots, but truly an amazing place to spend a peaceful time with great people and beautiful scenery. The night time kayak adventure is a complete “next level” in connecting with nature.

Hannah and her husband were very helpful and accommodating with our time on the lake. We had a little bit of a rough start due to the weather but when we contacted Hannah she was more than happy to adjust our reservations. You can tell how much they actually love and enjoy what they do as a company and that they’re all about providing a great experience for everyone. A very warm and friendly environment. I highly recommend Joseph Oregon Paddle for your time on Wallowa Lake.

Such a fantastic experience. Highly recommended. The process was so easy! We had a wonderful time making memories with our kids. We’ll be back!

The 3 of us (adults) opted for the night kayak ride with the glass bottomed boats. What a hoot! The equipment was detailed and in beautiful shape. The guides were well informed and engaging. But most impressive was the attitude of caring and safety that the family team demonstrated, well beyond the minimum required. Thank you Jo Paddle of Wallowa Lake Oregon for making our night trip such a lasting memory!

Very informative and caring couple who runs Jo Paddle. They are thorough in what to do if you are new to paddle boarding, and had extra amenities like sunscreen, water and bug spray at no additional cost if you needed it. They also had a lot of good, not-so-well known information on things to do in the area. It was extremely helpful and appreciated.

We had a great time on the Nighttime Adventure Tour! Our guide was local and knew the lake well. We loved the stability of the kayaks and the see-through feature. We got to see the bottom of the lake several times and our guide led us to areas to see 2-3lb trout swimming under our kayaks! By the end it was very dark, which was amazing for seeing the stars! We highly recommend this company and tour! Thank you JO Paddle for a memorable experience!

Highlight of our Vacation

The kayak tour with Tony was the highlight of our vacation this year. It was so peaceful being on the river, and the wildlife put on a show for us. From seals laying on the beach, otter swimming over to check us out, to bald eagles perched on tree limbs, we saw beauty all around us. We even saw two seals fighting over a fish! It was amazing!

Guided Kayak Tour

Looking to find a kayak rental, my husband and I found the Safari Town Surf Shop. The friendly family-run shop owner, Tony took care of us right away. We were on a guided tour the next morning in the beautiful and environmentally protected area at the mouth of the Salmon River. We paddled close to the ocean, then doubled back to explore the estuary. A seal, herons, egrets, and other waterfowl greeted us on this calm, quiet morning. We felt totally safe and in good hands. Thanks for the great time Tony!

Wonderful kayak experience!

I took my adult son on a 2 hour guided kayaking trip with Safari Town Surf Shop and we had an amazing time! Guided kayaking on the Salmon River

We had a two hour guided kayak trip on the Salmon River just north of Lincoln City. It was our first time kayaking. The weather and river conditions were fantastic. Safari Town Surf shop provided everything we needed and met us at the river. Our guide, Kevin, was extremely friendly, personable and helpful in showing us how to kayak safely. We had a great time. We highly recommend. We’ve already booked another trip and invited friends to go with us.

Jill C

Best surfing lessons!

My family and I traveled to Oregon for vacation this summer. We all wanted to learn to surf. Amazingly, with their help, we learned in one day! My girls are 17 and 14. We booked a lesson with Safari town which included a lesson for each of us- they fitted us with wetsuits and boards. Kevin and Chase took us to the perfect spot and were helpful And patient while we learned the techniques. We then got to keep the boards for the rest of the day to continue to practice. We had a great time and it was a highlight of our trip. I highly recommend these folks. They clearly take pride in their business and it shows.

Kaylee Peery

We booked a kayak tour with Tony and it was fantastic. He was super chill, willing to work with all levels of kayaking abilities, he was adaptive to our pace, and went out of his way to help us take in some of the wildlife. We will definitely be back, and will recommend him to any and all visitors to Lincoln City and the surrounding areas!

Great local shop. Tons of rental inventory with the best rates (as far as I could find). My early morning lesson with Kevin was great; his instruction was clear and easy to understand and he had precise answers to my questions, especially about reading the wave and getting up once I caught the wave. I’ll definitely be back!
