What To Expect On A Walk Around Downtown Belize City
Albert Street or “Outta town”, are both synonyms for what we know as the heart of the Belize district – Downtown Belize City. From 9 am to 7 pm, locals and tourists alike flood the street of downtown Belize City for anything your heart desires. Whether it is delicious tacos, mouth-watering meat pies , hot jam rolls, or fresh fruit from one of the corner vendors ; you name it, it will be right there for you. But not only will you find an abundance of food options, but downtown Belize is also known for its historical landmarks and colonial buildings and houses. This country is a complete melting pot of cultures, so a walk around downtown Belize City is just what you need to experience culture and soak in the ambiance.
What To Expect
Battlefield Park in Belize City. Image courtesy IE Ltd.
When walking down the crowd-filled sidewalks of Albert Street you will see small entrepreneurs on each side of you. Some will be selling gold or silver jewelry, handmade jewelry, or paintings. On each corner you can find a food vendor – the smell of fresh peanuts and pepitos ( macoby seeds ) will draw you near. You can also find fruit stalls or carts selling golden plums, mangoes, craboo, or whichever fruit is in season for $1 a bag . On King Street, there is a small Belizean restaurant that has stood there for more than 20 years – Dits Restaurant . H ere you can find warm jam rolls, lemon pie, milk cake and so many other delicious Belizean deserts. Who doesn’t enjoy sightseeing and snacking at the same time?
Historical Landmarks
St. John’s Anglican Church.
At the far end of Albert S treet, you will notice a large colonial-designed church, known as St. John’s Cathedral, which is the oldest church in Belize. It was built in 1812 and 4 native kings of the Miskito tribe w ere crowned there. Across the street is the Government House or House of Culture which is open for visitors to explore the small museum inside.

When walking down Bishop Street, on your right you will see the Court Houses and across from that is the Battlefield Park which used to be a meeting place for locals. Occasionally , you will notice horses passing by on either side of the street.
The historical Swing Bridge of Belize City. Image via Belize
A little further on, you will find Mule Park and the famous Swing Bridge which connects the north and south side of Belize; on special occasions, the bridge is swung to allow boats to pass through – this is quite a sight to see. Upon planning your trip to Belize, make sure a walk around downtown Belize City is on your to-do list.

Things to Do in Belize City
Long ago stripped of its status as the country's capital, Belize City remains Belize's business, transportation, and cultural hub. Sooner or later you'll probably have to spend some time here, unless you do all your in-country traveling by air or have a very precisely planned itinerary.
With a population of some 50,000, with 20,000 in the suburbs, Belize City is surrounded on three sides by water, and at high tide it is nearly swamped. It's a strange, dense warren of narrow streets and canals (the latter being little more than open sewers, and pretty pungent in hot weather), modern stores, dilapidated shacks, and quaint wooden mansions, coexisting in a seemingly chaotic jumble.
The city was originally settled by the ancient Mayans, who lived up and down the coast here. By the mid-1600s, pirates were using the current site of Belize City as a hideout and provisioning spot. Soon after, the British arrived and set up a logging base here, fueled by slave labor. Logs were harvested inland and floated down the Belize River for milling and shipping. This logging base soon became a colonial settlement and the seat of Britain's colonial empire on the Central American isthmus. Belize City itself is said to sit on a foundation of wood chips, discarded ship's ballast, and empty rum bottles.
Belize City has historically been beset by tragedy. The entire population abandoned the city and moved to St. George's Caye in 1779 following a Spanish attack. The Baymen, as the British settlers called themselves, returned and resettled the city in 1784. Massive fires razed much of the city in 1804, 1806, and 1856. Deadly hurricanes inflicted heavy damage in 1931 and 1961. Between these events, the residents endured smallpox, yellow fever, and cholera epidemics. Belize City had been declared the capital of British Honduras in 1892, but after Hurricane Hattie struck in 1961, the country's capital was relocated inland to Belmopan.
Today, most people who know it well will encourage you to pass through without a second thought. A common nickname among locals is something that rhymes with “Belize Gritty,” which is sadly fitting. This is an urban area in a developing nation, and the gang violence here has earned Belize one of the highest homicide rates in the world. While tourists are typically spared from this, precautions must be taken to avoid victimization of any kind.
That being said, Belize City remains the urban heart and soul of Belize, and a surprisingly fruitful place for shopping. Belize City is also the best place to see the culture of the country concentrated in one place, whether it’s the local arts community, fishermen pulling in their daily haul, or even just people-watching at hole-in-the-wall restaurants.

Trip advisor reviews
We did the ATM cave tour with Our 5,8, and 10 year olds and it was incredible! Our guide Jr, was so good with the kids! He took so much time to explain everything that we were seeing.. including all of the plant and animal life on the hike to the start of the cave. We never felt rushed. Being in the cave was like being in another world and Maya Walk as a company really reiterates how important it is to respect where you are. We loved that about Maya walk. All of the staff were professional and kind. The lunch after we came back from the cave tour was wonderful! Big thanks to Jr for making this day awesome for our family!
We booked two tours through this agency. We were impressed with their degree of professionalism. We first did cave tubing trip, which was far better than I expected. The next day we did their tour of the ATM cave with Juan Carlos as our guide – he is the guide you want! He shares a great deal of information, not just on the cave, but on pre-Hispanic culture, and makes it accessible and relevant to the tour. On both days we were served a meal after the activity. We highly recommend these two activities with Mayawalk, and in the order that we did them.
