The 4 best Hollywood tours
Take one of these awesome Hollywood tours to see more than just the Walk of Fame and the Chinese Theatre
get your guide
Hollywood tours are in no short supply, from the open-top vans that line the Hollywood Walk of Fame to intimate walking tours. At their best, they take the guesswork out of exploring major tourist attractions and celebrity hangouts, and can sometimes offer an offbeat look at Hollywood history. But finding a perfect route is a challenge, especially when most Hollywood tours barely even take place in Hollywood; in fact, most are excursions through West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip as well as Beverly Hills .
We’ll be honest: Enterprising visitors are better off with a DIY approach. A smartphone, a Metro pass, and a ride-hailing app cost far less than a proper tour, and you’ll be able to tackle everything at your own pace.
But if you’re looking for a bit more hand-holding and have upwards of $40 to spare, a couple of quality options do exist for Hollywood tours. So we hopped aboard Tinseltown’s top tour buses to find you the best tours through L.A.’s most famous neighborhoods.

Best Hollywood tours
1. starline sightseeing tours hop-on hop-off.
- Things to do
- Walks and tours
- price 2 of 4
Starline Sightseeing Tours essentially operates an entire network of double-decker bus circuits across the city, from Downtown to Santa Monica. Unlike most full-day tours, you’ll never be held hostage to a particular itinerary. Buses arrive at most major tourist attractions across the city every 20 to 30 minutes, so feel free to avoid awful spots and linger in more interesting ones (the Hollywood-West Hollywood-Beverly Hills loop clocks in at just under two hours). Faux Robin Leach narration pumps through headphone jacks at every seat. The ritzy British accent lends extra hilarity as it recounts Hollywood lore, like the El Pollo Loco where Brad Pitt used to dress up as a chicken, or the liquor store where Guns N’ Roses used to get sloshed.
Don't miss: The multilingual audio commentary comes in eight languages, so no one has to miss out.
2. Hollywood Studios and TMZ Private Day Tour
However you make your way to this tour, you can’t possibly miss the bus; it has TMZ emblazoned in huge lettering down the sides of it and it’ll likely be surrounded by excitable folks. The lack of windows means taking photos is a breeze – plus, it allows your guide to yell witty quips at passersby when you roll through celeb hotspots. Inside the bus, a history of salacious celeb details are offered via amusing anecdotes. Essentially, this is three tours in one: The sightseeing aspect efficiently and lightheartedly covers the most notable stops in Hollywood, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills. Additionally, it’s a celebrity-hunting tour – the guides are armed with camera rigs to record fodder for TMZ – where success is never guaranteed.
Don't miss: Views of the Hollywood Sign, Rodeo Drive and Sunset Strip.
3. Hollywood Boulevard Prime Time Van Tour
- price 1 of 4
Walk anywhere on Hollywood Boulevard and you’re sure to be stopped by someone hawking a discounted van tour. The canopy-topped vans offer a comfortable alternative to driving yourself through Hollywood gridlock and the frightfully narrow roads through the hills up to the Hollywood Sign. However, the tours rarely delve deeper than “there’s Eva Longoria’s house.” For those looking for a no-frills way to snap some photos of Hollywood’s tourist highlights and celebrity homes, it’s difficult to find a more practical, cost-effective way.
Don't miss: You'll be driving past the homes of Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Elvis Presley and more... so keep your eyes peeled for celeb sightings.
4. Los Angeles: Luxury Hollywood Sightseeing Trolley Tour
It's not just about the views and famous sights on this Hollywood tour; passengers will be riding on a vintage trolley to make this experience even more memorable. Glance over at celeb homes and cultural hotspots, like Miracle Mile to the Original Farmers Market, from the comfort of crushed velvet seats. Your guide will be sharing stories that relate to each site as you pass by, making for a jam-packed three-hour joyride.
Don't miss: Look out for the onboard charging ports and remember to ask for the WiFi details.

Guide to The Best Seats on the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood
No trip to Universal Studios Hollywood is complete without experiencing our signature attraction, The World-Famous Studio Tour . This legit journey through the actual sets of some of your favorite movies and television shows is mixed with exhilarating attractions and entertaining insights, making it an educational thrill ride unlike anything you can experience anywhere else. And while it’s safe to say there are no bad seats on the Studio Tour, there are definitely some preferred seats, depending on what you’re most excited to see. Let me break it down for you.
Flash Flood
The flash flood on our Old Mexico set was added to our backlot tour back in 1968. You may recognize it from films like “Big Fat Liar” and “ Fletch Lives”, but seeing it in person is truly something else. A rainstorm starts out of nowhere and before you know it, 10,000 gallons of water are rushing toward you, blasting through windows, knocking over signs, when suddenly… *WHOOSH* It stops just short of washing away the entire tram. How? Movie magic, of course.
Best Seats: Car 2, Left Side
King Kong 360 3-D
The first of its kind on the Studio Tour, this attraction was created under the direction of “King Kong” director Peter Jackson. As you make your way through Skull Island, the tram is suddenly surrounded by hungry dinosaurs and giant insects.
Luckily, Kong is on your side. Actually, he’s on all sides, throwing punches (watch out for dinosaur saliva) and catching tram cars. Good thing the tram roof is built to support that kind of weight.
…it is, right?
Best Seats: Car 2, Right Side — if you want to see Kong’s epic entrance Car 4, Left Side — if you want to see what happens to Car 5
War of the Worlds
One of the most well-known sets from the Studio Tour is the plane crash from Steven Spielberg’s, “War of the Worlds”. Now I won’t tell you all the fun facts about this set (that’s what the tour is for), but it is a real 747 airplane that was torn apart for the movie and it is truly something to behold up close. As the neighborhood appeared in the film, you can still see the smoking wreckage of the crash and the scattered debris. Don’t worry — the tram will stop for a moment so you can snap plenty of pictures.
Best Seats: Car 3, Left Side
Some may recognize the peaceful village around the water as Cabot Cove, from the classic show, “Murder, She Wrote”. However, this section is most commonly known as Jaws Lake, home of the unstoppable great white shark from the movie “Jaws”. After greeting one of the divers in the water, the tram will pause on the dock (for safety, I guess?), allowing the shark to cause some destruction by the gas pumps before attacking the tram. This is why they tell you to keep your arms inside the vehicle, folks.
Best Seats: Car 2, Right Side — to get a good look at the shark just as he emerges Car 3, Right Side — to get a good look at the shark and enjoy those fire effects (if it’s chilly outside)
Earthquake — The Big One
This part of the tour has been featured in movies like “Beverly Hills Cop III” and the TV show “Bones”. Much like King Kong 360 3-D, this attraction delivers thrills and action on all sides, so there are no bad seats. The difference here is that all the effects are practical (no 3D glasses needed). Plus, if you missed the fire effects from Jaws Lake or the flood from Old Mexico, Earthquake features both — and they’re on opposite sides!
Best Seats: Car 3, Left Side — for those fire effects (just watch out for the gas truck) Car 3, Right Side — for that impressive flood
Courthouse Square
Your tour guide can rattle off dozens of different movies and TV shows that have been filmed on this beautiful block of the backlot (and likely a few current productions!), but none more well-known than “Back to the Future”. While some of the facades have changed, you’ll still be taken back to 1955 (or 1985, or 2015). There’s plenty of fun stuff to see on all sides, but the tram tends to pass by the iconic courthouse and clocktower just once.
Best Seats: Car 2 or 3, Left Side – for the best view of the courthouse
New York Street & Colonial Street & Six Points Texas
A good portion of the tour is spent traveling down streets designed to look like any city but Hollywood. This is where the history of filmmaking on the Universal backlot comes alive with facades everywhere. Because this is a working studio, the route can vary day-to-day!
Best Seats: Anywhere!
Fast & Furious — Supercharged
There’s a government spy on board the tram and the villainous Owen Shaw is on his way to take them out (and I don’t mean to dinner). Fortunately, the “Fast & Furious” crew is aware of the situation and are here to protect you and everyone else on board. After a failed attempt to hide out at Sullivan’s Garage, the tram finds itself in a high-speed chase through the streets of LA, with intense action happening all around it. This attraction uses similar technology to King Kong 360 3-D, meaning that once again there aren’t any bad seats. To take it a step further, the action throughout is pretty similar on either side, and one character is even carried along both sides of the tram by helicopter (before jumping back into their moving vehicle, of course).
Best Seats: Any Car, Left Side – for a good look at the souped-up vehicles right when you enter Sullivan’s Garage Any Car, Right Side – for a good look at the pre-show dance party and Shaw’s arrival
As you can see, no matter where you sit on the World-Famous Studio Tour, you’re bound to get an unforgettable experience. Just remember to stay seated while the tram is in motion, and don’t put those 3D glasses on just yet. Action!
Let us know in the comments below your favorite part of the Studio Tour and we’ll see you soon!

For Norman Bates: Car 4, right side, second to last row. The actors who play him are usually really cute and they’ll get right on your face.
Lol. It’s sad that I know this.
I’m at Universal Studios tour guide. The Normans will be happy to hear this. Starting today through Halloween horror nights Norman is up at the psycho house so your best view will be on the left side in car four. 👍🏻
Hi. Universal Studios tour guide here. For the earthquake section you have your sides flipped. Truck comes down on the left. Flood comes from the right. 👍🏻

The World Famous Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood – The Ultimate Guide
The World Famous Studio Tour is Universal Studios Hollywood’s best attraction. This one-hour tram tour takes you around the backlot of one of the oldest active movie studios in the world .
This is a real, working movie studio. As such, you’ll see some of Hollywood’s most famous filming locations and sets from your favourite shows and movies. This also means you could see celebrities while on the Studio Tour .
However, to temper expectations, I’ve been on the Studio Tour several times and never seen a celebrity. However, I did see Mario Lopez at the theme park entrance once.
The Universal Studio Tour is suitable for the whole family . There are no height restrictions. In fact, I recently went on the tour with my 14-month-old son.
The tour is hosted by Jimmy Fallon and a live guide who provides commentary throughout. Y ou will remain on the tram for the duration of the tour , during which time you will see and experience:
- Fast & The Furious: Supercharged
- King Kong 3D
- Bates Motel
- War of the Worlds Plane
- Jupiter’s Claim
- Flash Flood Simulator
- Earthquake: The Big One!
Some of these experiences can be scary for young children. However, you can not opt out of any experience. Instead, you will remain on the tram throughout.
If you are travelling with small children or those with sensitivities, I recommend sitting on the left of the tram at the very front or the very back . Jaws and Norman Bates are the scariest experiences and they aim for the middle of the tram on the right.
Studio Tours at Universal Studios Hollywood are also available in Spanish . However, these tours are only at pre-set times.
On my most recent visit to Universal Studios Hollywood these times were: 10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 4:30pm, 5:30pm, and 6:15pm. Meanwhile, Studio Tours in English are available non-stop throughout the day.
You are permitted to take photos and videos throughout the Studio Tour . However, flash photography is prohibited during 3-D experiences (King Kong and Fast & Furious).
Where Is the Studio Tour?
The Studio Tour is located in a dedicated lower lot area of Universal Studios Hollywood . To get to this part of the theme park, head straight from the entrance towards Springfield.
Once inside Springfield, continue heading straight until you get to The Simpsons Ride. You then want to turn right. At this point, you should see a sign overhead with ‘Studio Tour’ plus the wait time.
Be sure to turn right and not left at The Simpsons Ride. The dedicated Studio Tour, lower lot area, is separate from the general Lower Lot.
To get to the Studio Tour entrance, you’ll need to take an escalator. However, a lift is also available off to the right-hand side.
Wait times for the Studio Tour vary significantly depending on the time of year. In the off-season, I walked straight onto a tram. However, in peak season, I’ve waited for up to one hour.
Top Tips for the Universal Studio Tour
There are no toilet breaks during the Studio Tour . If you need the toilet, you’ll find them off to the right as you come down the escalators.
You can not take strollers on the Studio Tour , but there is a large stroller parking area located next to the attraction’s entrance.
You can use a Universal Express Pass on the Studio Tour . The line for Universal Express Pass ticket holders is at the ride entrance. I used a Universal Express Pass on a recent visit. Using the pass, I walked straight onto a tram while the standby line was at 20 minutes.
The Studio Tour is free with admission to Universal Studios Hollywood . However, you can purchase a Universal VIP Experience ticket for a more in-depth Studio Tour and other benefits.
You do not have to book a slot on the Studio Tour . Instead, each tour is done on a first-come, first-served basis. Each tram roughly holds 100 – 150 people, split across six carriages.
Generally speaking, the best time to go on the Studio Tour is in the morning when the theme park first opens . The lines are smaller during this time, so you should be able to go straight out onto the tour.
However, the Studio Tour is not the most popular ride at Universal Studios Hollywood, and it has a really large capacity. So, I suggest going to popular rides such as Mario Kart first.
That being said, I recommend avoiding the Studio Tour around lunchtime . This is when it’s most popular, and the wait time is often the longest.

Pyscho: Bates Mansion & Bates Motel
One of the biggest draws for the studio tour is the Bates Motel and Mansion.
At the mansion, you will pass by the mansion with Norman awaiting you on the porch. As you leave, you will narrowly escape his attack as he approaches with a rubber knife.
At the hotel, you will come across Norman carrying what seems to be his most recent victim and putting them in the trunk.
Once spotted, he slowly comes for the tram with a rubber knife.
Disaster Zone
Here you’ll journey through the disastrous wreckage of the Boeing 747 from Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds.
It’s one of the most amazing, yet terrifying set pieces on the whole tour!
If you do the Universal VIP Experience , you’ll be able to get even closer and walkthrough the actual wreckage.
Flash Flood
During your tour, you will stop in the street of a Mexican Village and a storm will quickly roll in.
Suddenly, you will be caught in the midst of a flash flood, watching as the storm waters rush towards you from down the village hills.

The Tram tour continues through the Isla Nubar set , encountering some silly dinosaurs along the way.

Another extremely popular staged event during the tram tour is encountering Bruce.
As you drive through the harbor area , everything is peaceful and serene.
But if you have seen the film, you know it’s not all it seems. Bruce eventually makes a shocking appearance!
Celebrate 4th of July at Universal Studios Hollywood: Fireworks, Tips, Food and more!
The tram tour enters a San Francisco Subway Station underground when a sudden 8.3 earthquake hits.
This effect is achieved with a hot set, in which certain props stay in place and won’t move.
The hot set features flooding water, a derailed subway train, a gasoline truck crashing through the roof with fire and spark effects.

History of the Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour
For context, Universal Studios Hollywood is still a working film studio.
It’s on top of being a theme park nestled within the glimmering San Fernando Valley hills of Universal City.
To this day, it is still one of the oldest film studios to exist to this very day.
While some like myself also visit to enjoy the shows and attractions that the theme park side offers, one should ALWAYS make time to enjoy the studio tour.
In fact, this is how Universal Studios Hollywood started its roots as a theme park!
The Early Days of Universal Studios Hollywood
Back in 1914, Carl Laemmele purchased a ranch in the San Fernando Valley and Universal City was born!
It included the studio itself, a working zoo, its own police force and mayor, along with Native Americans living on the land.
On March 14, 1915, Universal Studios had a two-day grand unveiling with approximately 10,000 guests in attendance.
Later on, for the price of 5 cents (about $1.50 in today’s money), visitors could come and see everything that went on inside the huge studio while it was cranking out movies.
At the time, Universal City was still rural, and visitors were able to purchase fresh produce.
Their admission included a boxed lunch with chicken as well!
However, because of the rise of “talkies” or Movies with sound in 1927 and the fact that sets were not yet soundproof, the tour was ended in 1930.
MCA Takesover Universal Studios Hollywood
Once MCA (Music Corporation of America) took over in 1962, it was suggested that the tour be reopened once again to increase revenue.
The Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour was revitalized on July 15, 1964, and technically that is the day the theme park was born.
Upon its return, it featured dressing room walkthroughs, peeks at productions and later down the line, staged events.
One of the early issues was giving things for younger children to do.
Earlier parts of the tour included the Ark Park petting zoo, which was an expanded version of the zoo already on site.
It boasted 200 animals and birds representing over 30 different species.
Universal Studios Hollywood Height Requirements (2024 Cheat Sheet)
The Flash Flood Scene is Added to the Studio Tour
In 1968, the Flash Flood scene was added due to a screen actors guild rule that stated that visitors couldn’t visit soundstages.
This meant they couldn’t show as much of the real experience and improvised with these special effects addition.
It proved extremely successful with 20,000 gallons of water rushing down the street of a Mexican Village.
In 1970, the Animal Actors Stage School was opened, which sadly recently closed to make way for the rumored Fast and Furious roller coaster.
Many things have come and gone with the tour such as a King Kong Encounter, a Battlestar Galactica laser battle, a rockslide and a collapsing bridge.
Today, the tour still remains one of the most popular attractions at the park, featuring tour guides, some who would later become celebrities in their own right.

My Final Thoughts and Review on the Universal Studios Backlot Tour
The Universal Studio Hollywood Studio Tour is not only one of the most favored attractions at the park, but a favorite amongst the studio tours in the city.
It has a storied history and is fun, exciting and puts you right in the middle of some of your favorite past and present television and film productions.

It’s a great way to take a break from the excitement of other attractions from the day.

SUNDAY AM FINAL: Sony ‘s Bad Boys: Ride or Die had a great Saturday of $19.5M , -10% against previews/first day of $21.6M , for what’s shaping up to be a $56M opening. This is the highest-grossing R-rated opening since Oppenheimer last July, and Will Smith ‘s sixth-highest U.S./Canada opening overall of his career and his 18th No. 1 opening as a leading man.
That Friday to Saturday hold is very close to what Bad Boys for Life did, which was -8%. PLFs and Imax stateside delivered 38% of the gross. Imax only repped 9.3% of the fourth pic’s North America weekend, or $5.2M at 401 auditoriums. The fourthquel played through the night, with 32% made of the gross earned after 8 PM showtimes, per EntTelligence. Admissions for the Smith and Lawrence reteam were 3.9M, repping 53% of the domestic foot traffic, followed by The Garfield Movie with 9%, IF with 8%, and New Line ‘s bomb The Watchers with 7%, or $7M on the $30M negative pick-up, ouch. Global on the Ishana Shyamalan-directed movie is $11.7M .
Top five cities for Bad Boys: Ride or Die were New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, and Chicago. AMC Southlake Pavilion in Atlanta is the top-grossing cinema in the nation with $155K so far.
Anyone obsessed that the Oscar slap would derail Smith’s career — um, no. Studies showed that Smith’s box office value among moviegoers would not tarnish post the controversial incident.
Another thing to crow about: Batgirl directors Adil and Bilall’s success this weekend comes in the face of conquering Watchers, a rival Warner Bros wide release.
Smith did a surprise appearance at the Baldwin Hills Cineplex over the weekend. Take a look:

Smith and Sony rolled out the global PR tour for Bad Boys: Ride or Die like D-day, covering three continents and ten cities, including Dubai, Riyadh, Madrid, Berlin, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Brussels, Amsterdam, New York, and Miami, with red carpet premieres in a bulk of ’em. Among the highlights there was a stunted arrival in Los Angeles on a double decker bus, with live performance by Smith, a turnout of 50k fans in Mexico City alone, and the first Hollywood premiere in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Natch, there were national appearances by the guys on Hot Ones, Fallon, Kelly Clarkson, Live with Kelly & Mark, Today with Hoda & Jenna, The Talk and Kimmel .
Smith can’t eat spicy wings:
A TikTok challenge was created inviting users to grab their “ride or die” and post fun videos to show how they’re a Bad Boy. Khaby Lame, who is the most-followed person on TikTok (162.5M Followers), had a cameo in the fourthquel and shot custom social content with Smith and Lawrence.

Across U.S. and 16 international markets, Sony engaged influencers with a huge social reach of more than 1.4 billion to support the release of the film, with the stars collaborating with many of them.
Updated diversity stats for Bad Boys 4 are 44% Black, 26% Latino and Hispanic, 18% Caucasian, and 8% Asian and 4% other. EARLY SATURDAY AM WRITETHRU: More great news, knock on wood, that the marketplace is rebounding – a bit. Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die secured $21.6M yesterday on its way to a $53M opening. Some even have it a tad higher at $54M at 3,885 theaters. While that’s what tracking saw three weeks ago, the sour market poured cold water on those prospects. Turns out, initial tracking was right. This is all according to early AM estimates.
Updated Screen Engine/PostTrak exits are 5 stars, 90% positive, and a great 84% definite recommend with a 97% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and an A- CinemaScore (the previous three movies all received As).
Bad Boys for Life drew 58% under 35, with 42% Black moviegoers, 30% Caucasian, 18% Hispanic and Latino and 10% Asian American/other. The fourthquel, also produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, showed 50% under 35 with 44% Black, 26% Hispanic and Latino, 18% Caucasian and 12% Asian American/other buying tickets. Those buying their tickets day of were 72% which tells you how much walk-up business this had, and which couldn’t be observed in some tracking (though some had a sense would occur).
RelishMix noticed an upbeat word of mouth out there with fans forgiving Will Smith post Oscar slap saying, “I’m glad Will Smith is back. His action movies never disappoint,” and, “Martin Lawrence is so funny and makes me laugh so hard like from deep, deep down inside funny.” Chatter relishes the balance between the action and comedic elements spotlighted in the trailer, with some feeling this is an improvement on the previous 2020 entry Bad Boys for Life , saying, “Last one was mid, but this one already looks and feels better like a Bad Boys movie”. Reports PostTrak, 35% of those who bought tickets came because of either Smith or Lawrence while 38% came because of the cast alone. Forty-two percent told exit polls that they came out last night because the fourthquel looked fun and entertaining.
Other deets about Bad Boys: Ride or Die, overall 53% Male / 47% Female with 44% of the audience between 18-34 years old with the largest demo tied between 25-34 and 35-44 at 26% apiece. Bad Boys : Ride or Die played in the East, South and South Central with the AMC Southlake Pavilion in Atlanta the highest grossing cinema in the nation with $81K.
Sony’s second place brag, The Garfield Movie , is eyeing a $10.3M third weekend at 3,959, -26%, for a running total of $68.9M by Sunday. The reboot will soon pass the domestic take of the 2004 20th Century Fox movie which ended its run at $75.3M.
New Line’s The Watchers is still not being watched with an estimated $2.9M Friday, and $6.7M-$7.1M weekend. The Ishana Shyamalan feature directorial debut gets a C- CinemaScore and 57% Rotten Tomatoes audience score. RelishMix notices negative chatter: “Negative convo on The Watchers is limited to those turned off by M. Night Shyamalan’s involvement as a producer after being dissatisfied with many of his past cinematic ventures.” This despite the fact that the social media universe metrics at 150.7M are running 9% above first installment horror norms across TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube and Instagram combined.
Watchers diagnostics saw a low PostTrak of 55% positive, 36% definite recommend. Male leaning at 53% on this PG-13 movie with 27% of the audience between 18-34 years old and 32% of the audience 35+ years old with the largest demographic being 25-34 years old at 28%. The movie pulled in 45% Caucasian, 26% Latino and Hispanic, 18% Black, 6% Asian and 5% other. The genre movie most predominant area was South Central, Mountain and West with the AMC Burbank the pic’s top grossing venue at $14K to date.
FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Exhibitors and distribution execs, even non-Sony ones, are breathing a sigh of relief as it looks like the Will Smith-Martin Lawrence fourthquel Bad Boys: Ride or Die is heading to $50M this weekend at 3,885 theaters. This is after a $20M-$21M Friday, which includes Thursday night previews of $5.9M . Last night’s evening shows were solid, and they held up against the first night of NBA Finals. Very good news after this summer has seen such notable event movies like The Fall Guy and Furiosa underperforming.
Bad Boys 4 has all the octane from PLFs and Imax screens.
Sony can crow further about its hold on the No. 2 spot this weekend with The Garfield Movie , which is seeing a third frame of $9M-$10M , -32%, for a running total of $68.6M on the high end by Sunday at 3,959 theaters.

Third place belongs to Paramount’s family movie IF, with a fourth weekend of $7.1M at 3,582 theaters after $2M Friday, -32%, for a running total of $92.6M by Sunday. That will be 1% ahead of Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy at the same point in time; that 2021 pic ended its U.S./Canada run at $121.6M.
Crashing in fourth place is New Line’s Ishana Shyamalan-directed thriller, The Watchers , with $3M today, including $1M previews, for what’s looking like a $6M-$7M start at 3,351 theaters. M. Night Shyamalan, who produced his daughter’s movies, also self-finances them and then sells them to the studio. In the wake of working with Universal, Warner Bros. attracted him over to its lot. I’m told that the studio shelled out $30M before P&A for The Watchers alone. This movie is not a Lionsgate genre thrifty price-profit special.
FRIDAY AM: Sony’s R-rated Bad Boys: Ride or Die did $5.875 million in domestic box office Thursday in previews that began at 3 p.m., a total that is actually only 8% off from the previews of the franchise’s previous long-awaited threequel, 2020’s Bad Boys for Life, which did $6.36M.
That’s a great start for Bad Boys: Ride or Die as it enters what has been an embattled marketplace due to lack of movie inventory from the strikes, not to mention a lack of mass-appealing movies — that is outside of Disney/20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes , which just crossed $144.3M. Audience reaction last night to the Will Smith-Martin Lawrence reteam was 5 stars and 88% positive on Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak, while Rotten Tomatoes audience score stands at 97%.
Demos, which change throughout the weekend, were 36% Black, 29% Hispanic and Latino, 20% Caucasian, 10% Asian, and 4% other. Men over 25 were dominant at 40% followed by women over 25 at 38%.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die saw a $23.6M first day, which led to an ultimate best-in-franchise three-day total of $62.5M and a four-day of $73M, but keep in mind that the threequel was working off the heat of a 17-year gap between sequels, not to mention it was MLK weekend. If all goes well, Bad Boys: Ride or Die winds up north of $40M.

New Line’s PG-13-rated The Watchers , the feature directorial debut of Ishana Shyamalan, is showing previews of $1M at 3,000 locations. That amount of Thursday night cash is on par with Universal’s Abigail. However, reviews are sour here at 29% Rotten, and the PostTrak exits were really bad at 1 1/2 stars, and 52% positive. Yikes. This despite a rather even turnout among age demos with 36% men over 25, 24% women under 25, 20% women over 25, and 20% men under 25. The projection for this movie heading into the weekend was $8M-$10M. Abigail opened to $10.2M off an 85% Rotten Tomatoes audience score.
The rest of Thursday shook out as follows:
1.) The Garfield Movie (Sony) 4,108 theaters Thu $1.5M (-7% from Wed), Wk $21M , Total $58.6M /Wk 2
2.) IF (Par) 3,783 theaters, Thu $1.2M (-7%), Wk $15.9M , Total $85.5M /Wk 3
3.) Furiosa (WB) 3,864 theaters, Thu $730K (-38%), Wk $15.5M , Total $54.4M /Wk 2
4.) Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (20th) 3,450 theaters, Thu $825K (-18%), Wk $13.1M , Total $144.3M /Wk 4
5.) Fall Guy (Uni) 2,826 theaters Thu $437K (-17%), Wk $6.3M , Total $82.4M /Wk 5
Jesus Thirsts: The Miracle of the Eucharist (Fath) 1,098 theaters, Thu $602K , 2-day cume $2.4M /Wk 1

The new Hollywood Bowl rideshare lot is a total game changer. Here’s how it works
- Copy Link URL Copied!
Being at the Hollywood Bowl to see a show is a magical experience. Getting there? Not so much, thanks to streets that get so clogged with traffic that it sometimes feels like every single one of the 17,000 people filling the storied venue to capacity are behind the wheel of their own car inching slowly up Highland Avenue.
Years ago, in an effort to make sure we got to the Bowl on time — reliably, every time — with a minimum amount of stress, my wife and I abandoned the idea of driving ourselves and parking on-site (a logistical nightmare) or taking one of the several shuttle buses from afar (an extra step that some swear by but requires the patience of a saint), in favor of taking a rideshare, building in an extra hour and wearing comfortable shoes.

Ditch traffic and parking. How to get to the Hollywood Bowl without your car
You don’t need to deal with gridlock and stacked lots at the Hollywood Bowl. You can take the Metro B (Red) Line and walk, ride a shuttle, or for the truly daring, bicycle.
June 3, 2022
Once the traffic inching up Highland Boulevard toward the Bowl slowed from a crawl to a near-complete standstill — which it absolutely always did with at least a quarter mile left to go — we’d disembark and make the rest of the way on foot. On the return, we’d try to beat the congestion and demand by hoofing it all the way down to Hollywood Boulevard before hailing a ride home. Neither of us particularly relished adding a mile-long walk to the end of the night, but the trade-off was avoiding the worst of the inevitable rideshare chaos.
Last time we went, though, things were different. Instead of heading up Highland and straight into the inevitable sea of Bowl-bound traffic, our driver took a circuitous route through the hills, emerged onto Cahuenga Boulevard and headed south. Sensing what seemed to be an epic blunder that would take us directly into the maw of vehicular misadventure, we exchanged nervous glances in the back seat and checked our watches. Then he did something wholly unexpected. Instead of continuing south straight toward the Bowl, he crossed over the Hollywood Freeway (via Pilgrimage Bridge), then headed south, taking the graceful arc of a right turn onto Odin Street. A few minutes later, we found ourselves disgorged onto a triangular patch of land across Highland from the Bowl’s entrance, which we could easily access via a pedestrian underpass.

After the show (James Taylor is still killin’ it in concert, btw), instead of slogging a mile down Highland to call a car, we just retraced our steps back through the pedestrian tunnel to the magical triangle where fleets of recently hailed Ubers, Lyfts and the occasional Alto arrived — also via Odin street — and slotted into numbered rows to make it easier to locate a driver once they arrive. Within about 15 minutes (lightspeed in Bowl terms), we were onboard, waved into a Highland southbound lane and on our way home. It was a game-changing, Bowl-going rideshare experience that shaved a good two hours and a 1.25-mile hike off our transit time.
That triangular space used to be the Bowl’s parking lot C, and its conversion into a streamlined rideshare hub was quietly announced on the venue’s website in mid-March — along with plans to dedicate part of lot B (the stacked-parking lot adjacent to the Hollywood Bowl) to mass transit. According to a representative for the L.A. Phil, which manages the Bowl, the venue averages about 1,000 rideshare cars per night.
The new rideshare setup, which went into effect when the season kicked off on April 11 (with the Jimmy Buffett tribute concert “Keep the Party Going”), resulted in cutting 350 of the venue’s 1,700 available stacked-parking spots.
While that was certainly bad news for anyone trying to snag one of those remaining 1,350 spots, I can tell you from firsthand experience that for the rideshare crowd, it’s game-changing good news.
The Hollywood Bowl rideshare hub lot C is located at 6655 Odin St. Information on additional transportation options, including shuttle buses and on - site parking, can be found at hollywoodbowl.com .

George Strait concert sets record at Kyle Field
Earlier this month, George Strait, and two other artists performed for a whopping 110,905 fans , breaking the U.S. record for the biggest crowd at a ticketed concert. The record was previously held by the Grateful Dead for a New Jersey concert at Raceway Park in 1977.
As if that wasn't impressive enough, it was also the 72-year-old's first time performing on that particular stage.
"We got some Aggies out there? Oh yeah!" Strait said at the concert. "I’m ashamed to say this, but this is my first time to ever be in Kyle Field. Damn! Just invite me back!"
The Texas concert attendance isn't the only record George Strait holds. In the history of country music, he holds the record for the most number-one albums and singles, gold albums, platinum albums and multiplatinum albums. He currently claims 40 gold albums, 33 platinum albums and 13 multiplatinum albums.
