Hokkaido (kC, Hokkaidō) is the second largest, northernmost and least developed of Japan's four main islands. Its weather is harsh in winter with lots of snowfall , below zero temperatures and frozen seas , while in summer it does not get as hot and humid as in the other parts of the country .
With its unspoiled nature , many national parks and rural landscapes, Hokkaido attracts many outdoor lovers, including skiers and snowboarders in the colder seasons and hikers , cyclists and campers from June to September.

Journey to the East, featuring Sapporo Snow Festival
I traveled as a solo traveler to Eastern Hokkaido earlier this year. What an experience. I have been to many other parts of Japan but this is certainly something like no where else in Japan. Amazing bird watching. Beautiful cranes. Stunning lakes. Outstanding food throughout. It would not have been possible to see this part of Japan on my own. We traveled by private car for most of the journey (apart from taking the train from Sapporo across to Kusshiro). Our local guide was from the area which made the experience even better. My highlight on the trip was the onsen baths, spectacular scenery, and meeting with indigenous Ainu people. I had read lots about Japan's ancient people so to meet them in person was probably the biggest highlight. I would highly recommend this tour and going with Unique Japan Tours. They were amazing to travel with.

Why Travel Self-Guided in Hokkaido
Getting around by public transport is fun and green.
Hokkaido is the northernmost prefecture in Japan and also has the lowest population density. The island of Hokkaido is vast, with scenic landscapes, which you can enjoy taking in while travelling slowly on local trains and buses. Finding the right bus stops and paying the correct fares in coins can be challenging if you do not speak the language. However, we believe traveling alongside with local people makes for a fun adventure. People from Hokkaido can be shy when it comes to speaking English but they are warm at heart and are willing to help visitors in any way they can.
You are the guide...
Going independent allows you to enjoy the freedom and flexibility during the day. Although we pre-arrange accommodation (and some activities with guides) and suggest places to visit and activities to do, what you actually do during the day is up to you. You are your own guide, deciding where to go, where to eat, and what to do during the day. You are free to set your own daily schedule. Having a smartphone equipped with a local SIM is indispensable, as it will serve as your capable assistant guide, helping you with navigation and translation.
... but you are not alone
We are here to support you throughout the planning process and while you are traveling. We make reservations for the accommodations with included meals as described. We will arrange dinner with hotels where dining out is not an option, especially in remote villages. Activities that require bookings in advance will be arranged by us.
We provide daily cue sheets and vouchers for each day. The cue sheets provide the information about the details of public transport you should take on each day, where and what time the bus or train departs and arrives, and how much it costs. The vouchers are to be handed in to the receptionist or the guide at check-in, just to avoid any confusion and lost in translation moments.
In an emergency, whether you've missed your transport, gotten lost or are unwell, we are also just a phone call away. You can travel independently with the confidence of knowing you have a local friend ready to help if things don't go quite to plan.

Miyuki i. japan tour reviews.
“ Great Tour ”
We had a great day exploring Sapporo. Miyuki was lovely to spend the day with. Unfortunately it was a dreary day, which has no bearing on Miyuki as a guide. She did great pivoting and making the best out of a cold and rainy day. It had been warmer but there was a cold snap. We went into some buildings most people choose to just look at from the outside and snap pictures. It was a chance to warm up for the next leg of the trip. I think you are doing yourself a disservice choosing to not go in at the clock tower. If you are from the USA, yes it is modeled after buildings in Boston. But it you enjoy history, Miyuki knows a lot and while it looks like a Boston building it is in Sapporo, Japan. We were also thankful for her knowledge of all the underground walkways and subways. That was a welcome reprieve from the wind. Where we stopped for lunch was delicious. She was also prepared with a map and told us a few things while we waited for our food. It was a great day. Highly recommend. Especially if you only have a short time. I definitely want to go back,
Dear Karen san Thank you for the great review. And thank you for reading all the explanation carefully in Clock Tower and Former Hokkaido Government Building. There are more places you can enjoy in each season. I hope you have another opportunity to come back to Hokkaido. Regards, Miyuki
“ Otaru, a beguiling city ”
Miyuki showed us the charms and beauty of the city. We had a pleasant day with her.
Dear Mary san Thank you for having me as a guide. And Thank you for visiting Sapporo 2 times. Unfortunately all snow and ice festival in Sapporo and Otaru just finished. But it was beautiful day in Otaru. I am glad to know your son is interested in Anime and Japanese culture. I hope you have another chance to visit Hokkaido again. Thank you so so much, Miyuki
“ A Beautiful City ”
This was our second tour with Miyuki and we enjoyed it just as much as the first. Otaru is quite beautiful and even more so as it was snowing. We never felt rushed with Miyuki and she was happy to let us look in any of the shops that we passed and even encouraged us to do so. My adult daughter was particularly impressed as other guides have rushed us past shops. We were booked to make glass beads however the shop was not open at the time Miyuki had booked. This did not deter her as she adjusted the itinerary to have lunch and tried to find another venue. We ended up at the original shop at a later time and it was a lot of fun. Our final stop was the sake brewery and after showing us through Miyuki went back to collect our bead creations so we didn’t have to backtrack. We all thoroughly enjoyed our day thanks to Miyuki.
Thank YOU again. I really appreciate your warm comments for our trip. I can’t thank you enough. I hope you have another chance to come and see beautiful nature in Hokkaido with your family. Millions thanks, Miyuki
