Most importantly, consider what you’ll need in terms of total space and organizational compartments. Make sure the backpack you choose can accommodate your laptop, travel snacks and drinks, handheld gaming console or books to read for fun, however many changes of clothes you need for your trip, or anything else you’d typically bring along while traveling. 

Many backpacks will list whether they can accommodate 15.6-inch or 17-inch laptops, and some brands will list the specific dimensions of the laptop sleeve or compartment within the backpack. In addition to comparing the measurements of your laptop to those advertised by a potential backpack, consider whether you want a dedicated zipper compartment for your laptop or if a padded sleeve inside the main compartment will do. 

With laptop backpacks for travel specifically, there are two useful features to look out for: hidden pockets and a USB charging port. Some backpacks come equipped with a zipper compartment positioned on the side or the back of the bag, making it incredibly difficult or impossible for someone to pickpocket what’s inside. These pockets are perfect for your valuables, like your wallet, smartphone, or keys. 

Then, some bags include a USB charging port accessible on one side of the backpack and a cable inside that you can attach to a power bank you own. This allows you to comfortably charge your phone without needing to carry the power bank while you walk around a theme park or sit in the backseat during a road trip. With some travel backpacks, you can slip your phone into a side pocket so you don’t need to carry it, but it’s easily accessible when you need it.

Whether you’re a student, a remote worker, or just someone who always likes to have their laptop to hand, you’ll know how important a good laptop backpack can be to help carry your laptop safely.

There are a ton of laptop backpacks on the market, and not all of them are great. With so many options, finding the best one for your needs can be tricky. To help you pick the right model, we’ve sifted through a wide range of laptop backpacks and have rounded up our top picks. 

Our picks include a range of options, including waterproof, slim-design, business-attire and adjustable backpacks. Our testers have spent hours walking the streets, commuting and traveling with these backpacks to see how they hold up over time.

Best all-around pick

Nomatic travel backpack.

If you want one backpack that'll work for your daily commute, a day trip or weekend away or as an airplane carry-on, this is it. I continue to be amazed at how well designed this bag is every time I use it and it truly feels like the company thought of everything. Take, for example, the key leash. Most bags have a short one stitched inside a pocket -- some more accessible than others -- and can't be removed. Nomatic includes a retractable clip-on key leash that can be moved to another pocket or just removed entirely. 

Another good example is the internal design. The main compartment gives you enough room for your lunch, a jacket, books and whatever else you might carry with you on a daily commute including a hard case for sunglasses. Like many travel bags, though, there's a zipper around the outside (all the zippers are weather-sealed, by the way) that expands the size to give you space for shoes and clothes for a day or two. What is unique is that when you expand the bag, it reveals another zipper that opens the backpack like a clamshell for easy packing.

A compartment at the front of the bag has all the organization you'll need for cables, a mouse, power adapters and other accessories. It also has an RFID pocket to keep your credit cards, ID and other things safe. A separate zippered lined pocket above the front compartment is perfect for your phone and there are cable pass-throughs from the pocket to the front compartment so you can put a power bank in the latter and charge your phone on the go. 

Then there are things like external pockets on each side that stretch to fit a water bottle or umbrella but close flat to the bag with magnets when empty. The backpack stands on its own and has grab handles on the top and sides so you can easily carry it when it's off your back. The shoulder straps even tuck into the cushy back panel so they don't flap around or get snagged when sliding it under an airplane seat. Also, the separate laptop compartment at the back can be unzipped and laid flat to slip it through TSA without taking your laptop entirely out.

At $300 (£236, AU$457), the Nomatic Travel Backpack is not exactly a bargain, but given its versatility, the quality of materials and thoughtful design, it's worth every penny. 

Best budget backpack

Solo duane hybrid briefcase.

Can't decide between a shoulder laptop bag and backpack? Hybrids like the Duane solve this with a design that works as both. Detachable backpack straps stash in a pocket on the back when you want to attach its removable shoulder strap. There's enough room for books, your lunch and whatever else you need to get through the day including a dedicated laptop compartment for up to a 15.6-inch laptop. Plus, despite a price as low as $44, it carries Solo NY's five-year warranty.

Best for daily commuters

Incase arc commuter pack.

The Commuter Pack is a winner with great organization and an all-around thoughtful design. For example, the zippered pockets on each side can be used to hold a water bottle or umbrella but can also be used to simply secure small items. It's also a good place to charge your phone on the go. And when they're not in use, there are no saggy pockets to look at.

The main compartment has plenty of room for your lunch, headphones, books or whatever, and there's a large slip pocket for files, too. There is also a set of elastic tie-down straps similar to what you'd find in a suitcase -- perfect for holding a jacket. A separate laptop-and-tablet compartment with a weather-sealed zipper keeps them protected and easy to access. The laptop sleeve fits up to a 16-inch MacBook Pro and is lined with faux fur to prevent scratches (it feels amazing, too). 

My favorite feature, though, is the hidden faux-fur-lined pocket on the top. It's a quick-and-easy spot to drop your phone or sunglasses, and it has a magnetic closure so stuff won't fall out. But the best part is that the pocket is accessible even when the pack is on your back. 

Best small backpack for photographers

Brevite jumper.

What's great about the Jumper is that it works equally well as a daypack as it does a camera bag. Unzip the main compartment and you have a large open space for your daily essentials and a small zippered pocket for valuables (though there's no key leash). On the front, there's a zippered compartment with small organizational pockets to hold cables, batteries, earbuds and more. A water bottle pocket on the right, a hidden zippered pocket in the padded back panel and a separate laptop compartment at the back with a weatherproof zipper all give you enough storage for your daily commute or walking around campus. 

Just behind the front compartment's zipper, though, is another zipper that opens the entire bottom half of the backpack to the inside. With the compartment open, you can use the included four padded dividers to organize and protect your camera equipment in the bottom half. The sides of the backpack and the bottom are padded as well. A panel inside at the top of the bag drops down to form a separation between the top portion and your camera gear so you still have room for stuff that's not camera gear. Straps on the bottom can hold a large tripod (or a jacket) or you can use the side pocket for a small travel tripod instead. 

Lastly, there's a zippered opening on the left side to give you fast access to your camera without having to lay the bag down and open the front section. It's a really clever, versatile compact design. And for those who don't need the camera protection, Brevite makes a version that's just for hauling your stuff.

Best large backpack for photographers

Peak design everyday.

If you like clean, streamlined designs and bags that can shrink or grow depending on your needs on any given day, you'll appreciate the  . Peak Design got its start making camera accessories, which shows in the bags design and features like its origami-inspired removable dividers, but the stylish backpack is great even if you're not a photographer. 

Large zippered side panels give you easy access to everything inside regardless of where it is in the bag. Each side panel has separate zippered storage areas for accessories and a slim padded laptop compartment is accessible through a zipper at the top. It will easily carry an iPad or snugly hold up to a 15-inch MacBook Pro. 

All the zippers are weather-sealed and the fabric is water-repellent, and a magnetic latch system lets you expand or shrink the top of the bag, so you can fill it to the top and still secure everything inside. External side pockets and hidden straps give you more storage on the outside. 

All of those features and the quality construction will cost you, though: The smaller 20L-size bag I tested costs $280, while a larger 30L version is $300.

Best rolltop daypack

Deuter up seoul.

The Up Seoul is a daypack version of the bigger rolltop bags messengers use . Rolltops are great because if you suddenly need more space in your backpack, you can unroll the top and create a chimney for your stuff. Plus, rolling over the top keeps rain out. However, once they're full it can be a pain to get to stuff at the bottom of your bag. 

The Up Seoul solves this access issue with a zipper at the top of the bag that goes across and then down the right side, giving it a wider opening. On the inside, you'll find a padded laptop sleeve, a couple of slip pockets, a shallow zippered pocket with a key leash and an elastic water bottle pocket. On the outside, there's a slip pocket on the left for a water bottle or umbrella, a large zippered pocket on front and a hidden zippered pocket on the right big enough for your phone that can be accessed with the bag. 

Soft padding on the shoulder straps and back panel and removable sternum and waist straps help keep this bag comfortable even when it's packed full. The Deuter Up Seoul is  available in two color combinations and is made entirely from recycled materials.

Best convertible satchel backpack

Moshi treya lite.

Despite the "Lite" in the name, this bag actually offers quite a bit. Available in tan or black, the $210 satchel is made from vegan leather that is ridiculously soft to the touch. Included straps and multiple attachment points allow you to wear it as a shoulder bag, a messenger and, yes, a backpack. You can also just use it as a handbag. 

Inside there's a sleeve for up to a 13-inch laptop, plus space for all your necessities. And if you need a bit more space, the top unsnaps to increase your storage. The top flap closes with magnets, but there's also an interior zipper to keep things more secure. 

A hidden slip pocket on back gives you somewhere to quickly stash your phone or sunglasses, though there's also a zippered Napoleon pocket back there for anything else you want to keep close at hand. The external pocket on front is actually a removable clutch and can be used with the shoulder strap for when you don't want to lug a bigger bag. 

Best customizable backpack

North st. belmont backpack.

The Belmont is a simple backpack with a zippered front pocket, two slip pockets -- one on each side -- for a water bottle or umbrella and a drawstring top covered with a flap to keep out the weather. It's on the inside where things get more interesting. 

Along with a built-in suspended 15-inch laptop sleeve there are two rails of soft Velcro. Using those rails you can customize the internal storage with  removable organizer pockets . Customizing your pockets means you get exactly what you want, plus when the bag is really full, you can just remove the pockets to get to your stuff without unpacking the backpack first. 

The Belmont, like all of the company's bags, are made to order in Portland, Oregon. It's available in a dozen color options and they're made from water-, tear- and abrasion-resistant Cordura or recycled EcoPak EPX fabric .

No matter how nice-looking a backpack is, it can still make you look like a 12-year-old at the office. With a clean design and a combination of 1050 denier ballistic nylon and leather accents, the Pro Executive is a stylish laptop case and office-friendly adult backpack. 

The backpack features multiple compartments. Four external pockets keep your everyday essentials organized while two large main compartment sections give you room for everything from a change of clothes to a 15-inch laptop (though a newer slim 17-inch laptop will fit). The golden interior works as a light to help you find what you're looking for fast. And the backpack stays upright when you put it down. 

Waterfield Design makes all of its bags in San Francisco and while that makes them a little pricier than others, it's worth paying extra for the high-quality results.

When it comes to backpacks that pair well with business attire, leather is usually the default material. Leather is expensive and heavy, though, especially with backpacks large enough to accommodate a large laptop. The Slipstream fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro but its lightweight fabric and lining made from recycled materials keep weight down without sacrificing style. It's been waterproofed, too, so a sudden downpour won't get your stuff soggy or damage your laptop in the separate rear compartment. 

There are no exterior side pockets for a water bottle or umbrella, but two slip pockets inside the main compartment can easily hold both. The shoulder straps are padded with memory foam and covered with a soft, smooth fabric to help protect your clothing. They're also curved for greater comfort.

The main compartment is large enough to hold a bike helmet, a change of clothes or whatever else you need to get through your workday. A small compartment on the front is handy for your phone, sunglasses and keys. And, despite being made from fabric, it has a structure to it that allows it to stay standing when you put it down -- whether it's empty or packed full. The Tortuga Setout Laptop Backpack is the smaller version of their original Setout pack. This bag is a 24-liter masterpiece for anyone looking for a smaller laptop bag that feels and looks great. We might have rated it second best travel computer backpack but for many this will come out on top. The Setout Laptop Backpack has plenty of organisational features including mesh pockets and a super-secure area for your laptop. The Setout Laptop is marketed as a laptop bag for those who do lots of air travel and we find it to be a great bag to take onto planes as its easy to find our stuff, and it fits snuggly under seats (even on Ryanair).

Personally I love how compact this bag is – 24L is normally a little small for me but I make an exception for this. While I personally miss having a water bottle pocket on the side, the grab handle is a nice touch for those occasions when my back and neck needs a rest. The zips also open really smoothly. Its size made it feel great to wear day in day out and the quality of the materials felt like it would cope well with daily abuse!

The Harber London Slim Laptop backpack is stylish and functional. It is quite literally a laptop backpack and won’t fit too much more in (although they do make bigger packs so take a look at their site) and just perfect for minimalists who want something a little bit special. The pack is crafted from Premium Full Grain Leather which feels really classy, soft and supple to touch. The interior is nicely padded, there are loads of pockets for you cables as well as a handle if you want to carry it.

This pack is very different to the other pack on our list and isn’t really comparable to say the more versatile Tortuga. It is however perhaps the most classy and stylish and I felt pretty hip when testing out in my home city; it certainly has more sex appeal than the functional North Face.When they sent me this to try I was impressed. It is a niche product but that for the right person this would be the absolute perfect choice. What I really like is how minimalist it is – no unnecessary bulk and will look good if you’ve got a meeting to attend but want something more practical than a briefcase.

At 24l, the Osprey Metron is a well sized daypack which will accommodate your laptop, and lunch quite nicely. There is of course a padded laptop pouch along with enough pockets and pouches for keys, cards and pens. The compression straps are also a nice touch and we appreciated the way we could fasten the backpack down so it deint you won’t stick out like a tortoise and barge into people (as much) when you crowd onto the morning train.

TI personally used this backpack for day to use for a good while before I replaced it with an Osprey Quasar – the latter I found could also be used to double up as a hiking backpack. Though we’ve included it here as the best bag for commuters, our team really loved how versatile this bag felt. Osprey is known for their outdoor bags and our team felt this one was suited to just about anything you could throw at it, from hiking to biking into the office. The bag itself is made out of 300D polyester, and the black option has a triple-coated weather-resistant front panel. The shoulder straps are made with breathable mesh, and the back panels are padded too. The main compartment has plenty of storage space, and it expands by 35% to fit all of the clothes you may need. You can also maintain a slimmer profile if you are just using it for layovers and day trips.

While I personally don’t like the look of this one, we found it to be one of the best laptop bags for travel because of the way the laptop sleeve is set up. This backpack is smaller than others on this list, but the Incase Compass makes use of its space and we hardly felt the limitations. All in, what we loved most about this bag was how the laptop had its own dedicated pocket away from everything else.

The pack is accessed by a top-lid opening that pulls back – that’s not an opening style that I am too used to but it’s fine and actually makes packing and unpacking very easy. Inside the pack, the main compartment is split into 3 handy compartments including a very generous laptop compartment. To the touch, the material used in construction of the Gregory Rhune feels quite strong and durable and yet, the pack feels very light to carry. Overall, this is a great backpack for commutes and for day travel.

The Timbuk 2 is quite similar to the Incase above. It’s a smaller laptop TSA-friendly backpack that works great for both travel and work, and is one of the best lightweight laptop backpacks. There is a side pocket for your water bottle and a front pocket that is useful for your passport and boarding pass so I would gladly take this onto a flight. The main compartment has plenty of space, and the one in front of it has three smaller compartments for organization.

This backpack is comfortable too – it feels nice against the back and on the shoulders. The drawback about this bag is that it’s not big enough to take on most long backpacking trips; however, if you are just looking for a bag for everyday use, and quick weekend trips, this is a sleek, low-profile backpack that will keep all your stuff organized. Our team loved how balanced the weight felt in this pack when their laptops were stowed.

AER has done it again! They’ve taken the same ergonomic principles that were used for their laptop backpack and applied them to a messenger bag. The result: an amazing laptop messenger bag that is very efficient, effective, and, above all, useful. The AER Travel Sling 2 X-Pac is very useful. It comfortably holds a 16-inch MacBook and can even hold a camera kit with a few lenses after some rearranging. The fact that the interior of this bag can be rearranged, much like a camera bag, makes it stand out from the rest as well. At the end of the day, this is more than a messenger bag.

We were quite intrigued about giving this a go as many are used to the traditional backpack setup. To be honest, this is a great bag but after a while I did start to feel the weight of my laptop handing around my neck. Still, I loved how compact and lowkey the bag was whilst also providing a surprising amount of storage and organisation and I was also impressed with how comfortable the padded strap felt on one shoulder.

All in, we loved this sleek and professional-looking bag, but one of the standout features they told us about what they particularly loved was the zippers. Not only are they super strong and smooth, but they’ve got built-in loops for locking them and keeping your laptop secure. Above all we loved what just how bloody hard wearing these beasts are. What I loved less was the price tag though.

#13. Fjallraven Kanken Laptop Backpack

A simple and easy to use laptop backpack.

Fjallraven is one of the most recognizable backpack brands out there. Seriously, you can’t walk a mile in the city and not see someone sporting one of these boxy bags as they appeal to just about every type of person. The Fjallraven Kanken, one of the company’s flagship models, can also be used as a traveling laptop backpack. They are spacious enough to a hold a 15″ computer, include a nice dedicated laptop sleeve, and are pretty resistant to the elements. If you’re looking for something quick and easy, not to mention in-vogue, then buying all Fjallraven Kanken wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Fjallraven’s do have their limits though. I personally find their boxy design is a little awkward sometimes, although these bags are still comfortable to wear. If you need an everyday backpack, and not JUST a backpack for traveling, it’s hard to go wrong with the Fjallraven Kanken. It’s proven itself over and over and will probably keep on doing just that.

We recently came across Stubble & Co and tried a bunch of their packs for ourselves – honestly we were seriously impressed by most of them. The Roll Top is a great hipster-style 20L bag perfect for carrying around your laptop as well as having heaps of room for your other accessories. What really makes it stand out for a day pack is that the laptop compartment is in a separate pocket on the back of the bag. This both makes it mega secure (especially for a roll top) and also saves the massive main compartment for everything else.

Internally the main compartment is one massive space with a selection of pockets and organisers attached to the other side of the laptop compartment/ back panel. This works well giving you some level of organisation whilst also being super roomy.

The Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack is the perfect travel companion for digital nomads. It offers a large capacity along with many compartments for organisation. The size is generally perfect for 5-7 days of light packing and has fast become one of my favourite bits of travel gear .

I chose this backpack as my travel bag for all my weekend getaway trips while backpacking through Southeast Asia. It comfortably fits my stuff for weekend getaways and helps me stay organised with the handy laptop sleeve.

I really love all the compartments included; they help me stay extremely organised. The Best Backpack

When I (Adrienne) travel for work, I typically carry a Tom Bihn bag. The compact clamshell Synik 22 is my favorite. It's a small, low-profile bag that nonetheless fits a ton of stuff, thoughtfully placed and designed. For example, the zippered water bottle pocket is located in the middle of the backpack instead of on the side, so it won't tip you off balance. The pen pockets are located in flaps on the side rather than in the middle top, for convenient access when you're walking. The exterior is made from Bluesign-certified 400-denier ballistic nylon with top-of-the-line YKK water-repellent coiled zippers that are three times the size of normal daypack toothed zippers. You stand a better chance of lopping a finger off than you do getting this zipper stuck. Each bag has a lifetime guarantee.

Because the bag is so small, the pass-through on the back is only 7 inches wide—too narrow to slip over the handle of a carry-on. And the dense fabric and plentiful hardware—the zippers, O-rings, and buckles—make it a little heavy. But in the 22-liter size, I didn't notice the extra weight. It's the perfect, organized conference companion, but it's on the highest end of what we think is worth spending on a bag.

★ A roll-top Tom Bihn: The Tom Bihn Addax for $304 has become one of my go-to bags. Roll-top bags are more versatile than zippered ones. Don’t have enough room? Unroll it and stick your bike helmet in. Too much? Roll it down to compress the space. If you live in a rainy area, roll-tops keep water from seeping through the top zippers. Like all Tom Bihn bags, the pockets are metaphysical perfection, with a huge laptop pocket with two-way access that also has a tablet pocket for my Kindle, and front pockets with O-rings to hook keys and other sundries. It has a huge luggage pass-through and hefty padded shoulder straps. It's also hand-sewn in the US from PFC-free material and has a lifetime warranty that’s as bombproof as the ballistic nylon fabric. It’s a good thing because, at this price, you only want to buy it once.

Most Stylish

I (Medea) am a working, grown adult, not a high schooler headed to algebra or a hiker traversing the Alps. When I leave my work-from-home bubble to venture outside, my bag should look like a perfectly curated accessory to my outfit, not a ragged relic or a rugged pack. The 8.5-liter Rains Backpack Mini helps me maintain my sense of style without stripping away function. It holds my 13-inch MacBook and the accessories I need for work. I've even packed this little bag with an extra outfit and toiletries (in addition to my laptop) for a night away. Plus, it looks so pretty.

You can upgrade to the 13-liter version for $125 , but both sizes have the same-size laptop sleeve. They're waterproof and come in fun colors (I bought one in lavender a few years back), and the Mini has held up well over the past few years. There's a small phone zip pocket on the back panel, but when I'm commuting I like to keep my wallet there so I know no one can grab it. Look at Rains' other backpacks if you like its understated, Scandinavian style.

Best Budget Bag

Despite being more affordable than most of the bags on this list, this Herschel looks just as nice and is just as capable. I (Medea) used the Heritage as my school bag and filled it with a day's worth of textbooks and a laptop in its dedicated 15-inch sleeve. I've also used it as an overnight bag stuffed with clothes and a pair of shoes, and as a carry-on with essentials should my luggage get lost. It has since followed me into my work life too. It's made from 600-denier polyester with a faux leather bottom and handle.

After years of heavy use, it has only recently started to show signs of wear, especially on the top handle. The bag itself hasn't ripped, and the straps are holding strong. The downside? There's no water bottle pocket. If the Heritage isn't what you're looking for, take a look at the rest of Herschel's backpacks .

★ Alternative: Cariuma makes some of our favorite recycled shoes , and the company also makes a simple laptop backpack ($89) out of recycled materials. It has an extremely basic design, without too many pockets, and it can fit laptops up to 17 inches deep. I like the bright green interior, which makes it easy to see all your stuff.

Best for School

I (Adrienne) live next to a small private college, and the backpack I see the most often on students is a North Face backpack with an exterior bungee. The North Face offers several options in both men's and women's versions , but the Jester is the most affordable. It's versatile enough to take to school on weekdays and use for day hikes or traveling on the weekends. It comes in several different prints, but the solid version I tried is made from 600D recycled polyester with recycled plastic trims and a 28-liter capacity—more than big enough for my 13-inch laptop, jacket, snacks, and water bottle.

I like that the bag is affordable, recycled, and incredibly light (about a pound). I tried the women's version, which fits my narrow shoulders well, and has a FlexVent suspension system for maintaining airflow between your back and the bag. The top front pocket is incredibly spacious and well organized, with pen and lip balm pockets, and enough room for my giant sunglasses case, phone, and wallet. The bag is also balanced so that the weight lands between your shoulders instead of on your hips, which is more comfortable. Everyone likes this distinctive giant bungee, and I understand that it helps pin wet jackets to your pack. However, it flops all over the place and gets caught on things if I'm not careful, and I do not like it.

★ Alternative: JanSport also makes affordable school backpacks. If you'd like to spend a bit more than the standard Superbreak ($38) , the Pro Pack system ($150) has a detachable front pack. When unhooked, the front pack is a fully functioning cross-body bag, and the backpack works with or without it. The strap unclips so it can be safely tucked away inside.

Best for Work

Backpacks are by far the most comfortable carrying option, but they don't always look professional enough for the workplace. If you're prepared to spend almost $600, this all-leather bag doesn't compromise on function. WIRED reviews editor Julian Chokkattu made it through CES 2023 with this on his back. He stowed a 13-inch MacBook Air (it can fit up to 16-inch laptops), an iPad in the second laptop sleeve, chargers, cables, his camera, and a separate flash. There's decent organization in there with a spare zippered pouch and padding at the base to protect your goods.

The front pocket can store a few other slim items, and he likes the tiny pocket near the handles for keys or sunglasses. But the side pockets are too tight to fit a water bottle.

★  Alternatives: We love Cuyana's leather tote , and its Leather Backpack ($478) is just as beautiful. The laptop sleeve fits my 13-inch MacBook, and a second pocket fits a tablet or Kindle. Two front magnetic-close pockets held my Owala water bottle . A more moderately priced option is the Bostanten backpack purse ($130) . As you might expect from the much cheaper price, the leather is shiny and stiff, and you have to treat the toothed zippers with some care or they catch. However, if your budget does not fit a $500 work bag, this will work well.

A Vegan Work Bag

This bag is beautiful. I (Medea) picture an artist wearing this around the city, holding their sketchbook and a paperback. Unlike a lot of the backpacks we like, the Bobobark looks great if you're dressed up, and it converts from a backpack to a purse—you can use the handle like a tote, sling it from one shoulder, or wear it cross-body. The straps could stand to be more comfortable though, and I opted to use it as a tote more than a backpack because of that.

The Bobobark is made from cork, which gives it a leather look without using animal products. It's water-resistant and durable, and the company sells cork conditioner and coloring cream to keep it looking its best—for the price, you will want to make sure it lasts a long time. While this size will hold your laptop and a few books, there's also a beautiful mini backpack/purse I've been eyeing.

The Best Backpack-Tote

United By Blue's Carryall tops our list of the Best Recycled Bags . It goes from tote to backpack easily, just unzip the back pocket, pull out the comfy backpack straps, and clip them onto the sturdy D-rings at the base. The material is water-resistant, and it's padded, so your 15-inch laptop is safe. The Carryall has two bottle pockets and enough organizational pouches to keep organized.

Everything is made of recycled materials, too—the interior, exterior, and straps are 100 percent recycled nylon, the padding is a combo of 60 percent recycled nylon and 40 percent recycled polyester, and even the zipper pulls are 100 percent recycled nylon paracord.

★ Another Convertible Tote: The Cotopaxi Del Día Todo Convertible Tote ($75) is made of repurposed nylon and polyester (as are all of the Del Día bags) and has wide, comfortable straps. There aren’t many organizational pockets—WIRED reviewer Louryn Strampe says she likes the cavernous main compartment. In this category, I (Adrienne) also like Patagonia's Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack ($99) , which is recycled and also packs down small.

A Small, Customizable Bag

You've probably seen a Fjallraven bag on any plane, train, or bus. The 13-inch Kanken pack is especially small and good for everyday use, and it manages to fit a MacBook Pro in its laptop pocket. Plus the large main compartment and smaller front pocket can fit a Kindle, a thick planner, and a notebook, with room for lunch or a change of clothes. The fabric is rigid and repels water, and the company offers lifetime repairs (with a focus on sustainability ). I love the colors the bag comes in, but arguably the best part is that you can customize the Kanken .

The side pockets are tight, so they won't fit every type of bottle. (It held a 20-ounce Starbucks bottle, but anything wider won't do.) The Kanken comes with a foam pad that adds an extra layer of cushioning while you wear it, and you can take it out to use as a cushion when you need to sit on a hard surface. (It's not super cushy, but it's better than the cold, hard ground.) The Kanken also comes in a 17-inch version if you need the extra space.

★ A convertible Kanken: We also like Fjallraven's Kanken Totepack ($100) , which is essentially the same as the backpack but can switch from shoulder bag to backpack. It's smaller and not as padded as the United by Blue bag, but it's cute and compact, and it repels water. You don't have to unzip and clip the straps either, so if you're in a rush, just pull the straps over your shoulders.

The Cheapest Backpack

Out of the Woods makes its bags from what it calls “ supernatural paper ”—responsibly sourced tree cellulose—and it says 93 percent of the water used for manufacturing is returned to the source. It looks a little like leather but does feel like a piece of paper. And it's just $38. The main compartment has a snap-closure laptop sleeve, and the front pocket fits a 9.5-inch tablet (barely, but it zipped). I wouldn't overpack this bag, for the risk of putting too much weight on the straps, but they're comfier than I thought they'd be considering they're not padded. However, the square of fabric where the straps are sewn to the actual bag needs to be worn in. It feels a little like an annoying shirt tag on my back.

Narrow and Versatile

I (Adrienne) love Camelbak’s Adventure Travel Pack for everything from biking wine and watermelon to neighborhood parties to going on short hikes and cross-country flights. It’s so useful that I’m always startled to realize it only has a 20-liter capacity. I have it in the 100 percent recycled white color, which saves water and only emits half the greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating the dying process. It still looks pristine after a few weeks of being shoved under plane seats and left in backyards.

It’s a panel loader, which means you can unzip the top and see exactly where everything goes, like a duffel. This is convenient when packing for trips—I was able to fit clothes, a Dopp kit, and electronics for an overnight trip. (I know these types of zippers fail more often than top loaders, but it does make it easier to arrange and sort items near the bottom of the pack.) I particularly like how narrow it is; it fits my back and goes under airplane seats that even my children’s backpacks can’t. The bottle pocket has a zipper that makes it expandable so it can fit a little coffee thermos or my giant Yeti. Exterior compression straps also help squeeze my clothes even smaller. This is a great backpack if you want something that looks sleek enough for a work bag but is durable enough to take on a weekend trip to Yosemite.

★ Alternative: I also love the Patagonia Black Hole Backpack ($149) . This 25-liter bag is the perfect combination work/adventure bag. The suspended 15-inch laptop pocket clips shut, and the rest of the pockets are thoughtfully placed. It’s extremely light (a little over a pound) and is made from 100 percent recycled ripstop fabric.

Vegan Leather With a Detachable Pouch

The Metro Backpack's sophisticated look appealed to me à la the Rains bag—they're just nicer to look at if you like to match your bag to your outfit. This one has a secret too. The front pocket is a pouch that snaps on and off, so you can pack it full of things you may need on your lunch break, like makeup, tampons, or even just your wallet and sunglasses. There's a Folio Kit ($60) you can get separately that can be snapped on in its place.

The rest of the bag can be accessed via the clamshell opening. There's a zippered pocket and mesh slot against the back of the main compartment, and against the front side, there are felt-lined pockets made from recycled water bottles. These easily hold a laptop and a tablet, but there's an additional 15-inch laptop pocket against the back of the bag. The straps are comfortable, but they get heavy quickly. I tried this vegan leather option, but for a few bucks less you can opt for the nylon.

Best Bike Bag

While toting around the Morrison backpack, a friend immediately said to me (Adrienne), “That's the coolest bag you've ever tested.” North Street bags are made by hand in Portland, Oregon. The exterior fabric is durable 1,000-denier Cordura, and the interior is a waterproof X-Pac VX21 liner with a drawstring closure underneath a buckled flap. The interior laptop compartment is suspended over the bottom of the bag, and I like that the key ring and zipper pulls are made from bright, easily findable red webbing.

It converts from a backpack to a pannier in about a minute. Just pull the backpack straps out of the pouch on the back and clip them on, or tuck them back into the pouch to switch to the pannier clip. I didn't find the rack clips to be uncomfortable at all. North Street switched to padded straps since we tested, which may be more comfortable, if bulkier.

★ Another locally-made bag: The bag that I am currently using is also handmade for cyclists, but in Los Angeles. It blows my mind that the Road Runner Slacker Day Pack ($145) is only 13 liters, because it magically held everything I needed for a full day of travel and work at CES 2024 . I particularly like the flap, which buckles over a cinched top and let me get through security quickly by stuffing things in and out. Another small and reliable company is Timbuk2. The Division Laptop Backpack ($109) is WIRED reviewer Matt Jancer's backpack.

The Best Camera Bag

Reviews editor Julian Chokkattu loves Wandrd's Prvke series bags to hold all his gear, from his mirrorless camera and extra lenses to a 16-inch MacBook Pro and various other accessories. Despite months of regular use, it's in fantastic condition, thanks to the 1,680-denier ballistic nylon exterior and the weather-resistant zippers. Lots of little pockets adorn the bag to store cables, card readers, microfiber cloths, and the like—even one underneath that houses a rain fly to keep the bag dry when it's raining.

Julian opted for the Photography Bundle, which adds a camera cube filled with foldable Velcro dividers you can use to organize camera gear and keep them secure. It's also easy to access a camera from the side pocket without needing to take off the entire backpack. Wandrd is currently on Version 3 of the Prvke. For Organizers

The Dux's design takes some getting used to, but its organizational options might make you forget about its looks. This bag is very structured and surrounded by foam padding, so it can take a few bumps without breaking everything inside. Unzip the front pocket to unfurl two mesh zipper pouches and an additional fuzzy zipper pocket that fits fragile gear like sunglasses. Plus, there's a clip for keys, and if you need more room, you can unzip the bottom of this top pocket to directly access the main compartment of the bag.

This main section has three separate compartments you can access via either side of the bag, and it comes with a small pouch. You can fit cameras and lenses, or shoes and an outfit—whatever the day requires. (You can also remove the dividers.) The side entry flaps have their own pockets too, so every little thing you need to keep track of is accounted for. The two bottle pockets can unzip to expand—handy if you're carrying a tripod. The back is plushly lined with suspended pockets for a 16-inch Macbook Pro and tablet. There's yet another deep pocket on the very back of the bag near the handle, and slots on the shoulder straps to hold your phone, though it was tough to fit an iPhone with a Popsocket on the back.

A Tactical Bag

The GoRuck GR1 was designed by a former member of the Special Forces, so it's tough enough to take whatever you or nature can think to dish out. Its slim profile in no way betrays its awesome carrying capacity, which is bolstered by a hefty amount of MOLLE webbing to accommodate all sorts of straps, carabiners, or other items you might choose to clip to the interior or exterior.

The thick, padded straps take a while to break in, and at 3.5 pounds it's heavy for an everyday pack. But if you’ve spent years customizing your idiosyncratic carry system, complete with hand-sewn straps and just the right pouches for all your gear—or if you exit and enter your workplace by busting through a plate-glass window—then the GR1 will thrill you.

It’s your run-of-the-mill NPC bag—but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. There’s one big main compartment; a dedicated, padded laptop pocket; a roomy pocket in the front; and space for a water bottle. It’s partially made with recycled materials. It's often sold out.
• Targus Zero Waste EcoSmart Backpack for $60 : Targus’ Zero Waste Backpack is a solid backpack for under $100, and it's made from 20 recycled water bottles. It ships rolled up in a recycled plastic package that unfolds and slips into the laptop pocket to give the bag structure.
• Troubadour Explorer Ridge Backpack for $325 : Troubadour bags are functional, sleek, and extremely expensive. This backpack's interior is nicely organized with pen holders, a mesh pocket, and a few other slots for your knickknacks, plus a padded section for a 16-inch laptop.
• Aer Designs Slim Pack for $115 : For quick trips, this 8.5-liter bag still fits a laptop, charger, wallet, water bottle, phone, plus a snack. Its durable polyurethane coating can be easily wiped clean.
• STM Goods Myth 18-Liter Backpack for $120 : Reviews editor Julian Chokkattu liked carrying this bag. A suspended laptop pocket keeps it safe from accidental drops and the thick padding helps it sit comfortably on your back.
• Lo & Sons Hanover 2 for $238 : The Hanover 2 has a clever, padded, and detachable insert with four pockets in it. Use it for work to store a day planner, notebooks, coffee mug, and water bottle, or take it out and replace it with a diaper changing station , tiny rain jackets, and seemingly thousands of stuffed animals for the little ones.
• Able Carry Daily Backpack for $138 : This pack is thin, so you can stuff it to the brim before it starts to get bulky. And stuff it full you can, because it has a pocket for everything . The Thirteen Daybag for $139 is similar but slightly smaller.
• Mission Workshop Rhake for $435 : This roll-top bag has a ton of pockets, and its two-layer weatherproof construction and Velcro closures keep the contents dry. But those pockets aren't easy or fast to access, it's heavy, and it's even pricier than when we first tried it (and rising).
• Solo's Re:fresh Machine Washable Backpack for $50 : Solo's affordable lightweight bag is made from 15 recycled plastic bottles, and it's meant to be machine-washed up to 12 times. We've occasionally washed bags not meant for this, and without issue, but if you (or your kid) is prone to messes, it's nice that this one is made to endure the rigors of the washer.

Our Favorite Accessories

Oh, you have a backpack and you just … put things in it? And carry them around? That's great if it works for you, but don't worry if it doesn't. Most of us use an additional organization system. (This also lets us switch bags quickly and easily while we're testing.)

• VentaPak for $46 : The VentaPak clips onto the back of your bag, pushing your pack 2 or so inches off you, increasing airflow and hopefully curbing sweating. Surprisingly, it didn’t look super obvious, and at only 12 ounces, it doesn’t add much weight. There are standard and small sizes, so check the website measurements if you’re not sure if it'll fit your bag.
• STM Dapper Wrapper for $30: This is my favorite tech organizer for cables. It rolls up everything I need—my laptop charging block, a couple of USB-C cables, a portable battery or two—and unfolds it neatly so that everything is visible. No cable rat nests here!
• Eagle Creek Pack-It XS for $15 : My husband packs a tiny toothbrush and toothpaste in here so he can brush his teeth after lunch or after getting off a plane. It's a good habit, and no one has ever offered him gum in a hinting manner. You should also do this.
• Delfonics Pouch for $23 : Almost every bag manufacturer makes organizational pouches too. I like Delfonics and Baggu because they're affordable and come in a wide variety of sizes and bright colors. Bright colors are easy to see in the bottom of a bag!
• Herschel Pencil Case for $22 : Yes, every backpack usually has a pen pocket or two. Even in this digital age, that's not nearly enough writing utensils, especially if you use a paper planner . Get a pencil case and corral them from dropping to the bottom of your bag and exploding.

Perfect is a dirty word in product design, but we’re about stumped when it comes to drumming up a quibble about the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45 L ($300). This redeye-ready clamshell design is made to the highest of standards.

It’s made of quality materials, utilizing aluminum hardware and a burly 400-denier nylon canvas — and it easily ticks all our boxes for the best overall travel backpack. The interior of the bag is split into two compartments: a larger main area for storing the majority of your kit and a secondary sleeve at the front of the bag with five zippered pockets. The main pocket also sports a foam-padded laptop sleeve and three more pockets.

One of the more impressive aspects we discovered along the bag’s inaugural leg from Seattle to Anchorage was how easily the straps of the Travel Backpack stow away into the bag. Two foam panels on the back of the bag flip away to secure them and then close with a magnetic closure — very slick. This was our favorite strap-stowage system, with the zippered panels of the Matador GlobeRider45 coming in a close second. We find the Peak Design bag compresses smaller.

Then there are the little details. An ID-size sleeve on the back panel provides all the information should your bag get separated from you. Zipper pulls thread through one another to keep what’s yours safe. And a collapsible system adjusts the bag from a full 45 to 35 liters.

In our review, there’s little about the Peak Design pack that misses the mark. The company leans heavily toward the camera-toting travelers among us, but the 45 L Travel Backpack makes no compromises and works just as well for any user group. The high price is undeniable, but for the scope of the travel pack, it’s a buy-once-cry-once purchase we would make again.

Also available in a 30L size , the range of Travel Backpacks from Peak Design is so well-thought-out that you can practically see the cogs turning in their creators’ heads. We think they make the best travel backpacks on the market.

Even at the regular price, the Dakine Campus 33L Backpack ($75) is a great deal. And considering you can grab one on sale for $45, it’s a must-have budget travel backpack.

It has everything you need to keep your travels organized, without getting too big or complicated. This design has a padded laptop sleeve and a fleece-lined top pocket to keep your sunglasses safe. There’s an organizer pocket that’s perfect for pens, a phone, and easy-access essentials. We love pockets, and this backpack has plenty.

And if that weren’t enough, it also has an insulated cooler pocket to keep your snacks fresh on the go, plus double side pockets keep drinks handy. We found the straps comfortable during long travel days. Be sure to use the sternum strap when carrying a heavy load for the best fit.

While this bag does excellent at travel, it isn’t quite what the bag was designed for, thus it’s missing a few travel niceties like a compression system or the ability to pack away the straps. We didn’t find that we missed them desperately, but they would have been nice for a few instances. For similar-sized backpacks with more of a travel bend to them, look to the sleek Timbuk2 Never Check, or the uber-customizable Tom Bihn Synapse 25. But prepare to shell out some more for them.

If you’re looking for a sub-$100 backpack (under $60 during sales!) that does the basics, then the Dakine Campus Backpack is for you. It comes in a variety of colors and is also available in a 25L capacity .

Our Farpoint pack was easily the best load carrier of any we tested and a close contender for the best travel backpack overall.

Far beyond what any of the other travel packs offer, the pack even allows you to adjust the torso length — unheard of in the typical travel pack. Newly updated, these packs have been tweaked to ride the line between traditional backpacks and functional luggage, a claim we can substantiate.

The 40-liter capacity is just about the sweet spot for domestic carry-on luggage limits, and these packs make good use of the space. We could easily pack away a long weekend’s worth of travel essentials into the bag with a little space to spare.

Whereas many other travel packs stash straps away into the body of the pack, the Farpoint and Fairview move in the opposite direction with a deployable strap cover that neatly seals in the suspension for safekeeping when checked. This produces a clean profile that’s ready to be slung around, but it’s not quite as easy and quick as the magnetic panels of the Peak Design Travel Backpacks, as you need to unclip straps to tuck them away.

The interior of the pack is rather spartan, incorporating only one zippered pocket, a laptop sleeve, and two internal compression straps. We would have rather seen a bit more organizational features involved like those that the Matador GlobeRider and Topo Designs Global Travel bags incorporate, but for those who stuff more than pack, the Farpoint and  Fairview may very well punch the ticket.

With one foot on the platform and one on the trail, these packs from Osprey will get you where you’re going and carry a trip’s worth of kit with ease.

Aiming to do more with less, the Matador SEG45 Segmented Backpack ($200) proposes a future free of packing cubes and splits up the bag for you, making the organization of your travel pack a breeze.

The full 45 liters of volume is shared among the five segments (6, 9, 15, 9, and 6 L) and trades volume between the full clamshell compartment and the segments. Each of these segments is accessible via its own water-resistant zippers and can be collapsed as your needs change.

We found organizing by clothing type made the most sense in our own packing, but you could even pack based on the day of the week or the use. The clamshell-accessed main compartment was ideal for holding larger items like spare shoes or quarantining spent outfits.

Known for its overbuilt but lightweight bags, Matador didn’t spare the SEG45, utilizing 420D UHMWPE-reinforced nylon in the pack body, as well as 100D Robic Dynatec weave on the interior. It should be noted that this travel backpack doesn’t have any kind of frame and will rely on being packed well to carry correctly. Because of this, this pack won’t carry as well as bags like the Osprey Farpoint/Fairview, so consider packing mostly clothing in the SEG45.

Our testers felt this bag excelled as a travel bag you might deploy once you’ve hit your destination, as it packs away into larger bags so well. Unfortunately, however, the shoulder straps don’t pack away into the bag itself, so you’ll have to wrangle them into place to keep things tidy.

No matter what you’re up to, everything has got a spot to live in the SEG45 . Need a bit less space? Matador offers the SEG28 ($250) for that.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Looking to squeeze out every last liter of allowed space? Patagonia named this pack in honor of the cause: the Patagonia Black Hole Maximum Legal Carry-On 45 L ($239). This bag can be carried in a number of different ways, but we found it shined during travel as a shoulder bag.

Borrowing fabric from Patagonia’s line of burly Black Hole Duffels , the MLC 45 is made for the long haul. The 900-denier polyester ripstop is coated in a TPU laminate and feels ready to take on the surliest baggage carrier. We certainly felt no remorse in tossing the bag around.

At 45 L, the MLC is certainly right at the cusp of the maximum allowed size, but thankfully that space is well divided up inside the pack. Inside the main clamshell-accessed compartment is a blizzard of zippers and mesh pockets and dividers. Anything we tossed inside was well-stabilized.

Because there isn’t much of a frame to speak of, the Black Hole MLC doesn’t carry the best when slung over both shoulders and can sag when not entirely full. But over a shoulder with the included shoulder strap, this pack feels great and can be easily accessed on the go. This is one of the only packs in our testing to feature a shoulder strap (the other being the Topo Designs Global Travel Bag).

On top of all this, we greatly appreciate that the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45 L is made with 100% recycled body fabric, lining, and webbing. Perfect for grabbing and going, this pack is ready to move.

Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L

With an understated look that betrays the truly impressive fit and functionality inside, the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L ($279) doesn’t need to brag — it knows it’ll tote your kit through the worst of your travel or everyday commutes without missing a beat. This bag is our newly anointed best commuter-style travel backpack.

From a fabrics and materials standpoint, it’s clear that someone at Evergoods truly nerded out when they brewed up this bindle. The 840D ballistic nylon 6 that makes up the exterior of the pack is burly (errantly spilled coffee wipes right off), and compliments the thick #10 zippers and spacer-mesh back panel. Even the Evergoods logo is low-key: a simple 2×2” patch on the front of the bag with a slash. That’s it — and we dig it.

Bar none, the Civic Panel Loader has the best laptop sleeve we’ve ever encountered in a backpack, and that’s saying something. The side-accessed zippered aperture can hold a 17” Macbook Pro, and nestles into a fully padded space at the rear of the pack. This sleeve is suspended from the bottom of the bag, as we’ve seen in many forward-thinking bags, but goes a step further and protects the laptop from the side with an aluminum stay — the primary functionality of which is to support the side handle on the bag. Genius.

The high-polish finish on the CPL24 feels reminiscent of the attention to detail we loved about the Tom Bihn Synapse 25, but we ended up enjoying this pack even more for a simple reason: side carry. The broad handle on the side of the pack is reinforced by that aluminum stay, and it creates a perfectly supported carry for jostling through crowded terminals.

On the interior of the pack, two large pockets are subdivided with a few smaller sleeves and pockets, which are oriented to be accessed with the bag on its side. We carried this pack for a month straight of remote work, lugging it to coffee shops and co-working spaces, and it supplanted all other packs we’ve used previously. “It’s hard not to love a pack that makes your life easier,” says Senior Editor Nick Belcaster. “This pack does that. Laptop, headphones, notebooks — a whole lot goes into the pack without a care.”

Up there with Nomatic, GORUCK, and Tom Bihn, Evergoods is certainly among the pack-makers that put intelligent design and smart material choice above all else. The Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L is the final word when it comes to a travel pack you can carry every day. We certainly do.

Timbuk2 Never Check Expandable Backpack

Pulling off a good expandable backpack can be a tough task, with fabric accordion folds often taking up valuable real estate on the interior when collapsed in lesser bags. Not so with the TimBuk2 Never Check ($209), which takes a simple backpack shape and elevates it with premium materials and design to create one of our favorite travel backpacks for tucking under an airliner seat.

Unlike a lot of the pure-function rectangular bags in our lineup, the Never Check is a real looker — easily one of the best styled in our testing so far, and we’d have no qualms about bringing it along as a business bag. Small details like rubber-covered zipper pulls, anodized G hooks, and supple webbing keep it looking sharp. The 27.5-liter size is just about dead-on for most airline ‘personal item’ size requirements, and this bag easily slides under a seat.

The main compartment is accessed through a clamshell zipper on the front of the bag, which is gusseted to hang open while you’re loading it up. During the few national and international flights our Senior Editor Nick Belcaster deployed the bag on, this was easily enough space for everything you might want during a plane ride. And for everything else, a front pocket is lined with multiple drop and zip pockets for organizing small gadgets like chargers or keys.

The back panel of the Never Check is a plush ½ inch of comfortable foam, and combined with the equally padded shoulder straps made for a very nice carrying bag. The straps unfortunately do not stow away, but on a lower volume pack such as this, it’s a much less useable feature in our opinions.  And finally, one of our favorite features: the wide laptop sleeve. This 15” opening is generous enough to accommodate the larger laptops of today, and is suspended from the bottom of the backpack to ensure bumps don’t turn into bruises.

Just like the name suggests, the Never Check Expandable Backpack provides a svelte solution to bringing a bag with you during airline travel — or even just to the office. Its clean profile and attention to detail impressed us, and it would make an excellent work-to-weekend bag.

Matador GlobeRider45 Travel Pack

With a pocket or sleeve for pretty much everything, the new Matador GlobeRider 45 ($350) gives the Peak Design Travel Pack a run for its money when it comes to the best overall travel pack. 

Our Managing Editor raved about the GlobeRider after serious testing where she pretty much lived out of it for 3 months: “If you travel often and look for crucial components like internal and external pockets, laptop storage, and backpack and hip straps, consider the Matador GlobeRider 45. It’s a unique design in that the [pack] seems to have it all — every feature I’ve needed so far, both living out of it and in my travels — in a pretty packable size.”

What impressed us most was the way the GlobeRider was able to balance both an eye-watering amount of organization and versatility, and burly durability that ensures that this pack won’t shy away from tough travel conditions. In total (and we double-counted) there are 19 individual pockets on the pack, in all types of stretch mesh, zippered, and collapsible configurations. When good organization is key, the GlobeRider reigns. 

On the back panel of the GlobeRider, one of the more novel stowage systems we’ve seen packs away the shoulder straps and hip belt for when you want to slim down the pack. Two zippered panels — similar to the structure of the Peak Design packs, save for the closure — envelop the straps when not in use, and provide a lump-free panel for toting around. 

When it comes to downsides, the GlobeRider doesn’t miss much. The laptop sleeve aperture is a bit small at 9.5”, which in today’s age of mondo-screened computers may be limiting to some with larger devices. There also is no ability to convert the pack to a shoulder bag like the Patagonia MLC does, which can be handy when moving quickly through the airport.

Dang-near the top of the list, the Matador GlobeRider 45 would be an excellent choice for anyone who practices one-bag travel, or desires to have a place for everything in their journeys. The price does sting a bit, but based on the long-term testing we’ve completed so far, we’ve seen no indications that this pack will fade away anytime soon.

Thule Aion 40L

Better known for their roof boxes and racks, it’s fair to say that Thule knows travel, and the addition of smart, organized, and comfortable travel packs like the Thule Aion 40L ($200) makes all the sense in the world to us. This pack is a finely-honed bag for international and local travel alike, and is decked out in some high-class materials.

Like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC pack, the Aion 40L aims to go for the maximum allowed capacity, and at our measurements (21.5” x 15” x 8”) the pack slides in just half an inch less than the normal 45 linear inches typically allowed. That’s efficient. The space is split up into two main compartments and a laptop sleeve, with the larger opening with a full clamshell zip.

This inner compartment hosts a few zippered pockets and internal compression straps, but the star of the show here is the integrated TPU rolltop bag. This sack can be used to cordon off your liquids (and easily presented for inspection), as well as separate your pile of ‘to-do’ laundry. This reminds us of the ActiveShield compartment in the Gregory Border Traveler pack, but we enjoy the removable aspect here even more. 

Round the back of the pack, the spacer-mesh swaddled laptop sleeve rivals the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader , and has an additional sleeve for items like tablets, notebooks, or chargers. The back panel itself is impressively cushioned (one of the more luxe in our testing) and that extends to the shoulder straps. 

Unfortunately, there’s no shoulder strap-stowage system here, so you’ll have to wrangle those yourself, and while we typically enjoy the lack of a hip belt in smaller travel packs, the absence in a 40-liter pack is a little puzzling. Fully loaded, the Aion could certainly benefit from one, and while a separate sling bag can be added to function as one, you’ll need to fork over $50 for it.

Ranking high up there with your Peak Designs and your Ospreys, the Thule Aion 40L nails the style and material departments, and with a full 40 liters of space on board, has all the room to pack for your week-long trips — no roof box required.

Osprey Archeon 30L

First off, one word: Rugged. The Osprey Archeon 30L ($250) is a high-end build that spares little in the material department, and looks dang good while it’s at it. The 30-liter size makes this bag weekend travel-ready, and we greatly appreciated the fit and finish.

The overall design of the Archeon reminds us a good bit of the Peak Design Travel Bag (certainly the all-waterproof exterior zippers and curved side-entry pockets), but it’s the exterior fabric that really impressed. The 840D ballistic polyester is coated with a carbonate polyurethane coating, a bolstered recipe that increases durability by a magnitude over traditional PU coatings. In testing, we wore out before putting a dent in it.

The pack itself breaks down into two main compartments, with the main pocket opening behind a curved clamshell zip (we did have a little trouble with the zipper passing behind the exterior straps. Removing them fixed that). Inside, three expandable tech pockets tuck away all of your small kit, and do a good job of keeping things tidy on the interior.

On the exterior, Osprey doesn’t disappoint when it comes to suspension straps, which are comfortable, adjustable, and stashable. The mini wing-style hip belt earns special praise on packed flights, where we find traditional hip belts to be a hassle to store, and combined with the slick shoulder-strap stash pocket, the Archeon converts to minimal mode in under a minute.

Something the Archeon certainly could use, however, is a slightly larger aperture into the laptop/tech compartment. As-is, the zipper doesn’t quite extend down far enough to truly open up the pocket, and as such it can feel a bit like rummaging around in the dark looking for cords and chargers in the bottom of the pack. Extending these zippers down to the middle of the pack would seem to fix the issue, and we hope a later iteration might address this.

Nonetheless, we were still impressed by the Osprey Archeon 30L . There’s also a 40-liter version if you’re looking for a max-capacity carry-on, and even a smaller 24-liter for kicking around coffee shops day-to-day.

Arc’teryx Granville 25 Backpack

Made for moving through the city over the concourse, the commute-ready Arc’teryx Granville 25 ($220) takes travel backpacks to the streets in a sleek and tough design that we couldn’t keep from grabbing every day.

Crafted from the same N400r-AC² nylon ripstop as Arc’teryx’s high-end climbing packs, the mountain DNA is strong in the Granville, with fully taped seams that make the pack highly weather-resistant. In our impromptu “rain” test, a garden hose fired directly at the pack wasn’t able to get a drop past the tough exterior.

On the front of the pack, a single water-resistant zippered pocket was practically made for your keys, and could accommodate a few other essentials for when you’re on the go. Tossing back the shaped lid, a single drawstring entry leads to the interior space, which is mainly one large pocket, with a few zippered and drop pockets to separate smaller items. If you’re looking for the same style pack, but with a bit more organization built-in, the Tom Bihn Synapse 25 divides up its space well.

The padded interior laptop sleeve will accommodate up to a 16” laptop, and is suspended within the main compartment in a way that leaves us feeling confident in slinging our computer across a shoulder. Compared to other more airline-focused travel packs, the Granville 25 has its feet more firmly planted on the ground, and excels at bus, bike, or foot travel.

Whether your commute is just across town or across the country, the Arc’teryx Granville 25 makes for a good-looking carry-all that’s bound to be around for a while.

Topo Designs Global Travel Bag 40L

Chunky zippers, an overhead-savvy profile, and multiple ways to sling it over your shoulder: The Topo Designs Global Travel Pack ($229) has honed in on much of what we love in a travel backpack.

During a recent trip from Seattle to Southern California we were heavily saddled with the maximum the airline would allow. But this pack made use of every inch of space and reached the allowance of what we could check as our carry-on. The 40 liters of internal capacity is broken down into a series of dividers and pockets, which made condoning off things like electronics from the rest of our kit easy. And the interior of this pack is a cheery canary yellow, which helps with ease and visibility.

On the exterior of this pack, three separate carry styles are available to get you through the concourse in whatever way you choose. We found the full-featured backpack straps to be our go-to, which even sport load-lifters for a comfy carry. This suspension system does tuck away for when you might want to check the bag, though we found the hipbelt to be a bit tricky to fully retract.

Rounding out this travel-ready backpack is a tough build that makes use of 1000D recycled nylon and heavy-duty zippers, and we had no qualms with tossing this bag around during our trip. Perfect for anyone who subscribes to the one-bag travel ethos, the Global Travel Pack from Topo Designs makes the grade for those who want the most out of their carry-on.

The Allpa 28L Travel Pack ($170) will change the way you travel. It’s sleek, durable, and able to fit an incredible amount of stuff in a small space. The zippered mesh pockets keep clothes organized. And the compression straps maximize what you can pack.

The tough polyester and nylon construction can take a beating without any signs of wear. And we appreciate that the externally accessed, padded laptop sleeve makes pulling out your electronics at security checkpoints a breeze. There’s also a small outer compartment to keep essentials at hand.

You can completely tuck away the backpack straps and carry the pack like a briefcase, or wear it comfortably as a backpack. We’ve stuffed this pack to the gills countless times and have never had a problem with the zippers. Light rain showers or spills roll right off the TPU-coated exterior, but for legit rainstorms, just pull out the included rain cover.

The Allpa also comes in 35L, 42L, 50L, and 70L capacities. As our editor noted in the 42L review , “Building on its fun and functional ethos, Cotopaxi beefs up its bestselling product. The Allpa Travel Pack earns big points for clever design, clean aesthetic, and a surprising number of handy — and hidden — features.”

Yes, the Cotopaxi Allpa packs are an investment, but anyone who travels regularly will find it a worthy one. These powerhouse travel backpacks are sturdy, versatile, and built to last.

Tom Bihn Synapse 25

Refined and clean-looking, the Tom Bihn Synapse 25 ($243) is a high-end travel backpack we just can’t stop staring at. It just looks that good. Made of burly textiles and zippers, this pack was built to stand the test of tough travel and come out shining on the other side.

The Synapse 25 is the larger version of Tom Bihn’s Synapse 19 , a popular backpack made for daily carry. The bump in volume is appreciated in this travel-oriented version and is doled out in one large compartment as well as a set of pockets on the front of the pack.

We found all the pockets easily accessible, save for the side wing pockets. While these were excellent for the organization of smaller bits and bobs, the openings were a bit awkward to jump into.

Topped off by a cushioned suspension (the foam is a half-inch of supple EV50), this travel backpack didn’t weigh us down on long days of travel when fully packed. And when we wanted to go light, even the webbing hip belt was removable. In terms of the ability to bop around town as a daily driver, this pack is up there with the TimBuk2 Never Check and Arc’teryx Granville packs (we liked the back panel on this pack the most).

Along with being carry-on compliant, the Synapse is also one of the few bags on our list that are compact enough to fit under most airline seats without hogging too much precious legroom.

Osprey Nebula 32 Daypack

When it comes to backpacks, Osprey has put in the time — and it shows. The Nebula 32 ($140) feels like it’s all the brand’s most popular packs morphed into one. Most of all, we love how it seamlessly goes from city streets to trails.

This backpack can do it all, whether you’re hauling your laptop and books around town; water, food, and layers on an easy hike; or all of the above and then some for a weekend away.

The internal storage pockets are great for organizing all of your things for easy access. And while the Nebula 32 is top-loading, the main pocket opens up wide enough so you won’t have to unload everything to get to the one thing you want at the bottom. The sternum strap and hip belt are comfortable as well, especially when carrying a heavy load.

On smaller volume packs like this, sometimes design concessions need to be made to accommodate all the functionality, and on the Nebula it’s in the side compression straps. Like on the Osprey Farpoint/Fairview, the compression system of the pack overlays across the main compartment zipper, meaning you’ll need to undo some straps before rifling around in the storage area. Not a deal breaker, but a little annoying when the TSA line starts to back up behind you.

Overall, the Nebula 32 won’t disappoint if you make it your go-to smaller-volume travel backpack.

How We Tested Travel Backpacks

The staff of GearJunkie is a hot-footed bunch, restlessly plodding across the country or around the globe in search of adventure and whatever else comes our way. And we have a lot of stuff, which necessitates having a travel bag or four in the stable.

Surely any old bindle will do in carrying your kit around, but having a travel backpack that is dialed into the needs of travel can turn a stressful situation into a manageable one. We’ve been testing travel backpacks since 2019 and have put the market slice through the wringer on thousands of miles of travel to weed out the best of the best.

Senior Editor Nick Belcaster has a zeal for international travel, and he leads up our current travel pack testing, logging almost 10,000 flying miles in the last year alone. From Iceland to Utah, Belcaster has carried these packs and lived out of them for weeks, relying on them to support back-to-back travel excursions. The International Jet-Setter: The term ‘One Bag Travel’ is no stranger to you, and you’ve just about got your life distilled down into 45 liters of space. If international travel is your bag, then a backpack that’s up to the task will be essential to see you through to further time zones. Efficiency will be the name of the game here, and going with a pack that is dang-near the carry-on maximums for international flights will mean you can make it through without checking a bag. Look for near to 45-liter packs with plenty of organization baked in, as well as a comfortable (and stashable) carry system.

For international travel, the bag we reach for most often had to be the Peak Design Travel Backpack , with a razor-thin second place going to the Matador GlobeRider45 Travel Pack . For an emphasis on organization, the Matador SEG45 splits up the volume well, and if you’ll be schlepping bags around a long way, the Osprey Farpoint & Fairview Packs have all the Osprey suspension we love.

The Weekend-Warrior: Maybe it’s a work trip, and maybe it’s just for fun, but it’s only going to take 2-3 days total, and you’ll need a bag that can pack it in. For weekend excursions, we find packs in the 25-35 liter range work well for the minimalists among us, and the 30-40 liter range for those who like a bit more options.

The Tom Bihn Synapse 25 is easily one of the most stylish packs in our review, only slightly edged out by the Timbuk2 Never Check , and both make the grade for a single overnighter in a foreign locale. For a bit more space, you can’t go wrong with the Topo Designs Global Travel Bag 40L , a fun pack that is a lot tougher than the multi-colored exterior would let on.

The Commuter: No flight involved! Duty calls, and sometimes you’ll need to lug around a bit more kit than the old briefcase can allow for. Commuting with a travel backpack is a great way to stay comfortable on longer rides, as shoulder and handbags are cumbersome over the long run. Focus on a bag with a more traditional backpack shape that puts an emphasis on ease-of-access, and is in the 20-30 liter range.

For bumping around town, we’ve come to love the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24 , which not only lugs our remote office around with ease, but also looks pretty slick doing it. The drawstring opening here is a huge boon for quickly stashing a jacket, and the tough exterior fears no weather forecast. For a budget just-get-it-done choice, the Dakine Campus 33L will make it happen for less.

The right size pack for you depends on a few things. First, where are you going? And, how long do you plan to stay? Winter travel often comes with more gear, so you’ll need to pack extra layers. Longer trips often require larger bags.

That said, your personal packing style will be the most important factor. We know minimalists who happily travel for months with only a single backpack in tow and others who want the largest travel backpack possible in addition to a totally stuffed duffel bag . One method isn’t better than the other, but knowing your style is helpful when choosing a bag.

In general, we’ve found that something in the 28-45 liter range is ideal for comfort and packability. Many packs will also offer a compression system to allow you to limit the overall volume of the backpack. We’ve seen many different ways to accomplish this, but the most effective by far were the button snaps and expanding zipper of the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L . Packs toward the 40-45 liter range will be your carry-on bags of choice, and the 45-liter Peak Design, Patagonia MLC , and Matador GlobeRider are perfect for maxing out your allowed space. The 40-liter Osprey Farpoint/Fairview packs give up a little internal room for the luxe suspension system they’re carried with.

Packs in the smaller end of the range, from around 25-30 liters, make better personal items, and the TimBuk2 Never Check , Tom Bihn Synapse , and Patagonia Black Hole backpacks all fit snuggly underneath an airliner seat. These small bags move through a city gracefully and look more like everyday carry backpacks than traditional luggage.

What good would a bag be if you couldn’t get into it? From a simple drawstring to a thicket of Velcro and zippers, there are plenty of ways to keep your bag closed while you’re on the go, but not every one will be amenable to travel.

Zippered Clamshells: Most travel backpacks will use a clamshell-style design that opens up the backpack like a suitcase, allowing you to pack intentionally as opposed to stuffing things in. Oftentimes, an internal strap system will help keep your items contained while you’re on the move.

Packs with this clamshell design may also opt to add internal dividers to the main storage area, and make these dividers removable — should you need the entire storage area uninhibited. For packs without internal dividers or straps, consider adding a few packing cubes to keep your items organized.

In addition to the rear entry, some backpacks will offer additional entry points through the top or front of the pack. This can be helpful when you need to quickly retrieve something like a passport from your bag, without the need to totally spill the contents. The majority of packs in our review close in this clamshell manner, and a few of our favorites are the Peak Design Travel Backpack , Osprey Farpoint & Fairview 40 Travel Packs , and Matador GlobeRider45 Travel Pack .

Zippered Top-Access: Much like many traditional backpacks, zippered top-access packs load and unload from the topside, and generally only offer one point of entry/egress into the pack. For this reason, packs of this flavor are generally left packed during travel, as digging around for something at the bottom can be a hassle.

Bags of this stripe, including the uber-nice Tom Bihn Synapse 25 and expandable Timbuk2 Never Check , most often make better personal items over carry-ons, as their smaller volumes make for easier searching within.

Drawstring Top-Entry: While not quite as common as a zippered clamshell or top-access pack, drawstring top-entry packs can make for very quick and easy access to your kit if you’re on the move. These packs will integrate an extended fabric collar to the top of the storage area, which can be compressed when needed, or overstuffed with bulky items like jackets.

Commuters will find drawstring entry bags the most appealing, and the Arc’teryx Granville 25 has become one of our dedicated laptop toters for everything from remote work stints at the coffee shop to jumping on a ferry for work.

Carrying Options

There are plenty of ways to lug your kit to your boarding gate, but not all of them will be comfortable for everything. Over-shoulder backpack straps can support a good bit of weight but typically will need some type of frame to truly be supportive. The Osprey Farpoint/Fairview packs were the best-carrying packs in our testing, owed largely to the wire frame and Airscape mesh back panels, but we also enjoyed the carry of the aluminum frame stays on the Matador GlobeRider.

A shoulder strap travel backpack, like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L , can be slung across your body and provide a great amount of accessibility on the go. Don’t expect to carry too much weight this way, however.

And then there’s the classic suitcase style, easily towed anywhere. It’s good to note many travel backpacks will have stowable straps to better streamline the pack for a trip through an X-ray machine or stowed under a seat. The strap storage design of the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L impressed us most of all, utilizing magnetic closure flaps to pack away the shoulder and hip straps neatly.

Pockets & Organization

There’s an organizational saying: “A place for everything and everything in its place.” And we couldn’t agree more. Keeping track of everything while you travel is key for organization. And while more pockets always seem better, there is a threshold where having too many simply becomes more places to misplace things. Instead, we recommend packs with three to six pockets.

The Cotopaxi Allpa and Topo Designs Global Travel Bags both have ingenious inner organization systems complete with large zipping “pockets.” It has just enough space to find room for everything but not so many compartments that you’ll be hunting all day for your misplaced passport. For even more organization, the Matador SEG45 splits into five different segments that are accessible from the exterior of the pack.

Bringing along a laptop is a necessary evil for some travelers, and having an incorporated laptop sleeve in your travel backpack can keep it safe during travel. Most laptop sleeves will be padded with some type of foam and nestle in close to the back for maximum protection. In order to be TSA-compliant, a laptop sleeve will need to fold entirely flat away from the pack to be scanned.

Because flying with liquids over 3.4 ounces is prohibited in the U.S., carrying all of these items in a separate toiletry bag can make your foray into the screening line a breeze. Many of the packs on our list incorporate many external pockets where such a bag could be stashed and produced when needed.

Travel luggage takes a beating, so durability is a top concern. Luckily, gear manufacturers realize this and are making increasingly burly yet portable packs. The fan-favorite Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L pack is made with a 900-denier ripstop nylon outer with a TPU laminate for extra durability. It’s nearly indestructible, water-resistant, and versatile.

If you’re traveling somewhere with inclement weather or if your pack needs to double as a climbing bag or hiking pack, durability is extra important. And it’s worth paying more for a backpack that is water-resistant.

Space Efficiency & Carry-On Compliance

Astute observers will note many of the packs in our review sport a rectangular shape, which is certainly due to designers aspiring to create a more space-efficient pack. This isn’t to say that more shapely packs won’t make it happen, but when you’re struggling to make every liter of space count, maximizing dimensions matters.

Carry-on luggage is any bag that you plan on bringing into an airplane and storing in the overhead bins. Because space is limited, airlines dictate the maximum size that any carry-on can be. In the U.S., the most common size is 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches, or 45 linear inches (length + width + height). However, this is just a rough guideline; some airlines differ from these dimensions, and you should refer to their information directly.

In general, these dimensions provide a travel backpack with around 40-45 liters of internal volume, so buying a pack that’s as close to that as possible will provide the most space allowed. Many of the packs on our list have the ability to compress to a smaller size, such as the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L .

Be mindful as well, that any protrusions from your travel pack such as shoulder straps or handles will also need to fall within the maximum allowed size. Many travel backpacks today incorporate some type of strap-stowing ability, such as the magnetic panels of the Peak Design packs, the zippered cover of the Osprey Farpoint/Fairview, and the hybrid zipper/panel of the Matador GlobeRider 45. All of these provide a more streamlined profile that should both hit the mark, and fit better into overhead bins.

Travel backpacks run the gamut of prices — from affordable to downright pricey. There are a number of factors that play into what you get for the money.

Budget-Minded Travel Packs

Travel backpacks, as a category, are generally a bit pricer than your average luggage, as they incorporate tough materials that can put up with extensive wear over the lifespan. Travel is tough on bags, so it’s unsurprising that even budget travel backpacks will cost you around $100-150. These packs often will incorporate more traditional architectures such as a zippered top access, as opposed to the more complicated (and spendy) full-zip clamshell designs. For example, the Dakine Campus ($75) is pretty much your average school bag.

Volumes, too, will be a bit limited in this price range — added material adds cost. The 32-liter Osprey Nebula ($140) is about the best price-to-volume ratio you can get.

Mid-Range Travel Packs

Mid-range packs make up the bread and butter of travel packs, and can be had for around $150 to $200. These designs are often more of the full carry-on variety, and aim to capitalize on permitted volume as much as possible. The 45-liter Matador SEG45 ($200), Patagonia Black Hole MLC ($239), 40-liter Osprey Farpoint/Fairview ($185), and Topo Designs Global Travel Bag ($229) all shoehorn in just about as much space as a friendly gate agent will let you get away with.

For the price, you also get a good variety of functionality that makes travel easier, such as stowable pack straps, interior segmented pockets and sleeves (done excellently on the $170 Cotopaxi Allpa ), and an external compression system that limits the space your bag takes up. Some packs, like the TimBuk2 Never Check ($209), don’t exactly hit these parameters, but instead make up for it in high-quality design and materials.

Premium Travel Packs

Above $250, you’re likely paying for premium materials or a to-the-hilt design that leaves absolutely nothing on the cutting room floor. The Peak Design Travel Backpack ($300) is a great example, and utilizes super high-quality nylon canvas, custom aluminum hardware, and supple seatbelt material webbing in its build, as well as fitting in just about every conceivable feature you could want in a travel pack. The same can be said of the Matador GlobeRider 45 ($350), which uses high-tech UHMPWE-reinforced materials and sports a total of 19 pockets.

The Tom Bihn Synapse 25 ($243) is a bit of an outlier, as it commands a high dollar amount not for the extreme amount of space it offers or amount of features, but for being a hyper-customizable, hand-made bag that uses the nicest textiles available, as well as the best zippers, webbing, and foam in its design. If you’re a fan of the finest materials, this is your daily driver pack.

What Is One Bag Travel?

The ‘One Bag Travel’ ethos and travel backpacks go hand-in-hand. Simply put, to travel in one-bag style is to be minimalist in your luggage choices, and only take what you can carry onto the plane/train/pack animal. Not only does this do away with the fuss of deciding what exactly to bring along with you, but it also allows for breezing through airports — skipping the need to check baggage, wait at baggage claim, or fear for lost luggage.

In order to most effectively travel with one bag, be sure to read up on exactly the baggage size allowances provided by your transportation. This can affect both overall size and weight, and having an expandable pack is a large benefit here. In this way, you can carry just enough to skirt through under the limit, and then expand the bag when you’ve hit your destination for more breathing room. If you aim for a 35-40 liter backpack, you’ll be right on the money for one-bag travel.

Finally, remember that this bag is going to be the only item of luggage you’ve got, so ensure it’ll be comfortable enough for the long haul. Look for padded back panels and hip belts that’ll transfer the load correctly, and if they stash away — all the better.

Our team unanimously agrees that the best travel backpack is the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L . It’s extremely durable, and it offers plenty of organizational pockets to stash your kit away in. The clamshell opening makes packing a breeze, and we really appreciated the unique shoulder strap storage options available to turn the pack into a stripped-down bag that would slide into any overhead compartment.

The best size bag for traveling depends largely on your travel itinerary and mode of transport. The Cotopaxi Allpa packs range from 28 to 42 liters.

The 28-liter option makes for a compact and comfortable backpack that easily fits in overhead airplane compartments. The 42-liter option is a bit more like carrying a duffel bag on your back, but it still manages to fit in overhead compartments. It’s a great option for maximizing carry-on capacity in backpack form.

While both have their place in travel, a backpack can offer some advantages over a suitcase. Since they’re much more portable, backpacks can be brought to many more places where a suitcase won’t work. Suitcases can be your large load carriers, but a good travel backpack gives you the freedom to strike out on daily adventures.

Travel backpacks absolutely can be carry-on luggage, given they meet the size requirements. In the U.S., the most common maximum size is 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches, or 45 linear inches (length + width + height). But this is only a common size, and different airlines will have different specifics. Consult with your airline specifically to determine what they allow.

While different body types will find different travel packs comfortable, we can all agree that a good support system and ample foam make for a comfortable carry. In our own testing, we found the Osprey Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 Travel Packs were by far the most comfortable due to their plush suspension systems.

Because many different airlines operate a slate of different planes, there isn’t a standard under-seat luggage size, although there is an average: 16 inches x 12 inches x 6 inches. Some airlines allow personal items larger than this, but you should consult with their customer service for specifics. Our favorite personal item-sized travel pack was the Timbuk2 Never Check Expandable Backpack , which at 24 liters compressed easily slides under a seat.

Traveling with a laptop can be stressful, and I know how important it is to get the right backpack to keep your machine safe, but still easily accessible while traveling.

I worked for several years as a product engineer, and I frequently had to travel for weeks at a time while hauling my big-ass engineering laptop along for the ride. I went through several backpacks trying to find one that worked well, and along the way, I learned a lot about what sets the best laptop backpacks apart from the mediocre alternatives.

My first priority in a laptop backpack is that it has ample protection to keep my computer safe from bumps and dings while traveling. It also needs to be super easy to access my device so I can catch up on emails on the go or pull it out for TSA.

Of course, my backpack is going to be carrying more than just my laptop. I want a pack that has enough space and organization for charging cords, headphones, books, water bottles, and anything else I need to bring with me.

The NOMATIC Backpack is their classic urban pack that is perfectly optimized for traveling with a laptop. The padded laptop sleeve is very protective, easily accessible, and has room for most full-size devices.

This laptop bag opens with a YKK-brand zipper that wraps around the entire perimeter. This zipper is super smooth and durable, and the massive wide opening makes it super easy to access anything inside without having to dig.

You also get tons of small pockets for organization. There is a water bottle pocket on the side, a big external pocket with several separate compartments, and more zippered pockets inside the main compartment.

One I don’t love about this bag is that it only comes in black. Actually, I think all NOMATIC products are black, I’m not sure if they sponsor Batman, but that’s the only color you’ll see on their bags. It looks very sleek and professional, but I personally prefer to have some color choice and a bit of personality.

It also only fits up to a 15.6-inch laptop size. That’s standard size so most people will be covered, but if you have a big 17-inch laptop you’ll need a bigger bag.

This bag comes in either a 14 L or 20 L size. I’d recommend going with the larger 20 L just to make sure you have enough space. It still isn’t huge, but it has an expandable design that gives you 4 L of extra space when you need it. If you carry a lot of stuff on a regular basis, you’ll probably want something a tad bigger, but for a slim pack that can fit a bit more when needed, this is a great choice.

Aer is a San Francisco-based travel brand that started with a crowdfunding campaign for a hybrid gym bag/work bag. They build a wide array of travel bags centered around durable materials, simple designs, and functional features for travel.

If you’re going to be flying with your laptop, it’s important to have a bag that is specifically designed with the requirements of travel in mind. The Aer Tech Pack 2 is a streamlined, thoughtfully-designed laptop pack that works really well for travel because it is protective and packed with travel-oriented features.

The center of this bag is the suspended laptop pocket that isolates your computer from the outside. This means it is protected from bumps or impacts while you’re traveling. It’s also very easy to access your laptop through a dedicated zipper.

This versatile backpack has a luggage handle pass-through strap on the back panel. This means it’s super easy to attach it to the top of your luggage for wheeling through the airport. You also have grab handles on the top and side that make it easy to carry in any orientation.

I’ve spent a lot of time wearing a backpack while traveling, and if it isn’t comfortable, my shoulders get pretty sore after a few hours. The Aer Tech Pack nails it with comfort. It has nice wide, thickly-padded shoulder straps and a chest strap to help distribute the load.

It is also made with super durable materials. You get burly 1680D Cordura on the sides and a waterproof 840D front panel. This pack has a lot of structure, so it keeps its shape even when it’s empty, and it feels very sturdy and substantial. I seriously doubt you’ll be able to

Of course, those thick, tough materials do make this pretty heavy for a relatively small backpack (it’s only 17L). If you’re concerned about weight, you may want something else. I haven’t found the weight to be much of a problem though, and I’d rather have a bag that can take some abuse.

Matein Travel Laptop Backpack : Most Affordable Laptop Backpack

I get it, sometimes you just need the cheapest product you can find that still gets the job done. I’m a bit of a cheapskate, and I try to save money wherever I can.

If you’re strapped for cash, the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack on Amazon gives you a totally functional everyday backpack at an insanely low price.

The most important thing here is the padded laptop sleeve. It’s not the most protective out there, but it does have some cushioning to protect your device from small bumps.

You also get tons of internal pockets. Almost to the point where there are more than you could ever possibly need. There are water bottle pockets, four different compartments you can access from the outside, and several slip pockets and zippered pockets in each compartment. I personally would prefer something a bit simpler, but if you like having a place for everything, you’ll love the abundant organization here.

One thing I like about this bag is that there is an array of size choices, and it’s very obvious what laptop size fits in each one. You can buy a 14-inch, 15.6-inch, or 17-inch bag, and the size exactly corresponds to the size of device that will fit in the laptop sleeve. This takes a lot of the guesswork out of getting a bag that will fit your laptop.

Now with such a cheap bag, you can expect some compromises. The materials and components aren’t great, the zippers aren’t very smooth, and it’s just plain ugly, to be blunt. Okay, it’s not that bad, but you definitely won’t be winning any style awards.

The shoulder straps do have some padding, but it isn’t much.

If you’re on a super tight budget, this Matein backpack does what you need at a fantastic price point. Still, if you can scrape together a little extra cash, there are some other packs on this list that are higher quality while still being quite affordable. And hey, you can always look for a used bag to save money.

Rains Backpack : Best Waterproof Laptop Backpack

When I was in college I used to carry a kitchen trash bag inside my backpack to wrap around my computer if I ever got caught in heavy rain or snow (which happened frequently). You know what? It worked great. I would roll into class with a totally waterlogged backpack, but my laptop would be nice and dry. That one trash bag lasted three years, too.

I probably would have saved a lot of hassle by getting myself a waterproof backpack , though.

While I do love simplicity, I wish there were just a bit more organization in this bag. Laptop backpacks have to carry things like a charging cord, mouse, adapters, and other computer accessories, so a few more pockets would be a welcome addition.

Another thing it lacks is padded straps. The Rains Backpack only has thin webbing shoulder straps to carry the load. While this works fine, I’d want something more padded and supportive for carrying it on longer days.

For true minimalists, though, this pack has everything you need and nothing you don’t. And it really shows in the styling. The Rains Backpack is just plain stunning.

Swissgear 1900 ScanSmart : Best Full-Featured Laptop Backpack

It’s everything you’d expect from a protective, padded laptop pocket, with enough space for most big 1, but then a wraparound zipper lets the whole back panel and laptop sleeve fold out from the main bag and lay flat, with just a mesh panel covering your laptop. This means you can send the bag and laptop through airport security scanning without fully removing your device.

I really hate digging my laptop out of my bag to go through security, so I love this feature that eliminates that hassle. This makes it a great laptop bag for frequent flyers.

Beyond the neat laptop sleeve, this bag is packed with pockets and features. There are 6 different compartments you can access through external zippers, each of which has several internal pockets for extra organization. It has elastic suspension shoulder straps, a hidden sleeve for passports, a protective hard case pocket, side compression straps, a “floating” tablet pocket, and even a dedicated webbing loop for holding sunglasses. And with 31 L of storage, there’s plenty of space for all your essentials and then some.

If this bag has a problem, it’s that it is too loaded-down with features to the point of being overcomplicated. You’ll never run out of places to put things, but you might not know what to do with all the pockets!

It has two water bottle pockets, but I don’t love them. They are made of a thin mesh and are too small for larger bottles.

My biggest gripe? I think this bag is pretty ugly. It has a very utilitarian, bulky styling that just doesn’t look great to me. Is it a great, functional bag though? Absolutely.

When I have gear that looks good, I am more excited to use it, and I feel better when I’m traveling. A backpack with sleek, dialed-in styling has an almost magical effect; it makes me feel more confident and put together—like I could step off the ground and fly…

Okay, maybe I’m getting a bit carried away there, but you get the idea. We all like gear that looks good.

The Bellroy Melbourne is a slim city-oriented backpack that combines spot-on styling with smart functionality. It probably won’t stand out in a crowd, but it’s hard to deny the appeal of the minimal, understated styling.

The laptop sleeve is well-padded and has enough room for a 15-inch device. I just wish you could access it without opening the main compartment of the bag, but since it’s easy to get to, that’s not a big deal.

The closure system for this pack is very unique, and I’ve found it to be really intuitive to use. There is just a simple flap opening at the top, with magnets to hold it closed. There is also a zipper running down the full length of one side of the pack. You can choose to get in either way, or you can use both to fold it wide open, making it super easy to pack or get to all your items inside.

At 18 L, this is a pretty small backpack, so you won’t be fitting a ton inside. There’s also an even smaller 12 L version, but unless you are a true minimalist, I’d recommend sticking with the bigger size.

WANDRD PRVKE : Best Travel Backpack for Laptop and Camera

If you’re carrying camera gear in addition to your laptop, you have a very specific set of requirements from your bag. You need to look for camera backpacks that offer tons of padding and protection for all your sensitive equipment.

WANDRD was started by two brothers who couldn’t find a camera bag on the market that fit their requirements. Instead of settling for something mediocre, they decided to set out to build one themselves and make it the best camera backpack ever.

The WANDRD PRVKE is the original award-winning pack they built (though it’s seen some improvements over the years).

The first thing you’ll notice about the PRVKE is that it has tons of options for accessing your gear. There is a simple roll-top opening, full-length zippers that let you fold open the entire body of the bag, and side-access pockets so you can get to your gear on the go.

The laptop sleeve on the PRVKE is built into the fold-open front panel (instead of right next to your back like most packs). This means it’s super easy to access your laptop while you’re traveling. The downside is that if you don’t have the bag packed very full, your laptop can awkwardly shift around since it’s on the side farthest from your body.

If you’re carrying camera gear, you’ll want to opt for the photography bundle, which includes a removable padded camera cube, removable waist straps to carry more weight comfortably, and accessory straps for mounting tripods or other gear on the outside of the pack.

The padded shoulder straps are wide and comfortable, though I wish waist straps came standard with this pack. You do get them with the photography bundle, so maybe that’s not a problem for most people who will be buying this bag.

Okay, yes, this is an article on the best laptop backpacks , but I think it is worth having one shoulder bag in here. While backpacks are becoming more and more common in workplaces, there still are some times that you want to look a bit more professional, and a sleek messenger bag is a great option for that.

Timbuk2 was started in 1989 by a San Francisco bike courier who wanted to create a functional messenger bag for urban travelers. The first Timbuk2 product was the classic messenger bag, and they’ve been improving their designs ever since.

The Commute Messenger Bag 2.0 is a refined bag with a dedicated laptop compartment, dialed-in styling, and smart features. It’s simple, but well-built and easy to use.

The laptop sleeve on this bag is roomy and well-padded. You’ll be able to fit most full-sized devices (though giant 17-inch screens won’t fit), and there’s plenty of protection to keep your machine safe.

The versatile design can convert between a shoulder carry, cross-body carry, or briefcase depending on how you set up the straps. I love having options.

Before you jump on buying this, I personally would recommend you make sure to consider whether you really want a messenger bag over a backpack. I’ve had problems with messenger bags causing discomfort after carrying them for hours at a time, and there are plenty of professional-looking backpacks that still look at home in an office environment.

Harber London is a family-owned brand based in (you guessed it) London that specializes in premium leather goods that merge old-world craftsmanship with modern design. Their wallets, bags, and accessories are stylish, well-made, and very functional.

It all starts with the materials. The Harber London Slim Laptop Backpack is built with premium full-grain leather. The leather they use is tough and durable but smooth and supple at the same time.

The design of this backpack is very simple. It is a low-profile rectangle with a top zippered opening, a padded laptop sleeve, a few internal pockets for organization, and one external zippered pocket.

This pack is very minimal and compact. I love the sleek, slim design, but it doesn’t have much room for carrying stuff. You can fit a laptop (up to 16-inches), a few accessories, and not much else. If that’s all you need, then this will work great, but it doesn’t have much versatility for using as a day pack when you need to bring more along.

The leather shoulder straps on this bag don’t have padding, but they are reasonably wide. Normally, I would want much more supportive and padded shoulder straps, but since you won’t be able to carry much weight anyway, it isn’t much of a problem.

The biggest downside with this bag? The cost. It’s a high-end backpack, and unfortunately, the price reflects that.

The quality and craftsmanship of the Slim Laptop Backpack are really what set it apart from anything else. It looks amazing, feels even better, and is really well thought out.

Gregory Juxt 34 : Best Hiking Laptop Bag

If I’m traveling to a new place, odds are I’m going to be exploring its hiking trails (even if I’m technically on a work trip). It seems silly to bring a separate hiking pack in addition to my laptop/work bag, so I want something that can fit both purposes and kill two birds with one stone.

Gregory builds some of the best hiking backpacks out there, and the Gregory Juxt 34 is an adventure travel backpack that combines the trail comfort and support of their hiking bags with styling and features that make it ready for around-the-world travel.

If I were to travel back to Nepal to go trekking in the Himalayas again, this is the bag I would choose to bring, especially if I were bringing any tech with me.

This pack comes with a removable “electronics caddy” which is essentially a padded sleeve with space for a 15” laptop, tablet, headphones, cables, and other electronics. I love the fact that it’s easily removable, meaning you can pull out your laptop and electronics if you’re going for a hike. The pack is also designed to fit a hydration bladder in the same space. The versatility is awesome!

The Juxt is built around a trail-oriented suspension, which means it has a supportive wrap-around hip belt, padded straps that wrap around your shoulders, a sternum strap to dial in the fit, and a perimeter frame to distribute the load to your hips. This is a much more supportive design than most travel packs. You’ll be able to carry heavier loads with ease, both on trails and through the airport.

This bag has several other features you’d expect in a full-on hiking backpack. There are generous hip belt pockets, compression straps to cinch down your load, and even load lifters on the shoulder straps. Load lifters are adjustable straps connecting the backpack straps to the top of the frame. It’s rare to see them in travel bags, and they make a huge difference in distributing the weight.

I do wish the hip belt was removable or could stow away somehow. While I love having a hip belt for hiking, it really just gets in the way at the airport.

Overall, if you’re looking for a versatile pack that can carry your laptop and go for a hike, the Gregory Juxt is the best one I’ve found.

KÜHL Eskape 25 : Best Travel Backpack for 17-inch Laptop

KÜHL is another Utah-based brand that builds rugged gear inspired by the mountains. Many of their products remind me just a bit of old-school frontier explorers.

The KÜHL Eskape 25 is designed to be the “world’s best backpack.” While that claim is a bit audacious, I do think KÜHL did a great job making this a bomber, versatile pack that works great for traveling with a laptop.

If you’re one of those people who travels around with a massive 17-screen, you know how hard it can be to find a good backpack that fits your monstrous device. The highlight of the KÜHL is the massive laptop compartment that can swallow even the biggest laptops with ease.

The laptop sleeve is very protective, with ample padding around the sides and bottom. It also is totally separate from the main compartment, meaning it’s super easy to get your device out when you need it.

Beyond the laptop storage, you have a surprisingly spacious main compartment that zips fully open, making it really easy to pack and access your stuff. There are also several external zippered pockets to keep small essentials within easy access.

The padded straps are enough to spread the weight over your shoulders, but I personally wish they were a bit more substantial for those times when I have to carry heavier loads.

Like all of KÜHL’s products, the Eskape 25 has a pretty rugged, outdoorsy style. While I love that, it probably isn’t for everyone. There definitely are other packs that look more refined and stylish.

Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Laptop Backpack : Most Durable Laptop Backpack for Travel

Osprey is known for building some of the most popular backpacking and hiking packs in the business. That expertise also carries over to a range of fantastic everyday and travel backpacks. Their travel packs are durable, supportive, and packed with features.

The Osprey Farpoint 40 is different from most of the other backpacks on this list because it is built as a full-size carry-on backpack. If you want to travel with one bag to carry all your clothes and your laptop, this is the way to go.

The Farpoint has a side-access laptop sleeve right against the back panel, where it is very padded and protected. I like that it’s totally separate from the main compartment, so you don’t have to dig through to get your laptop out.

Speaking of the main compartment—it’s big! Surprisingly so. It opens up wide and gives you plenty of space to pack clothes and gear for extended trips (as long as you’re a light packer).

For me, the comfortable carry system is a big win for this bag. I hate how so many big travel packs skimp on support, padding, and hip belts. The best backpacks for one-bag travel focus on comfort, and it’s pretty obvious that Osprey used a lot of their knowledge from hiking packs in designing this. It has a sturdy frame sheet with a wire perimeter frame, well-padded straps, a very supportive hip belt, load lifters, and a sternum strap.

The backpack straps can also all be tucked away behind a zippered panel, leaving you with a smooth surface that’s much easier to stuff into overhead bins. It also means you don’t have to worry about straps getting snagged when it runs through security machines.

One downside of using this as your laptop bag for one-bag travel is that it doesn’t fit under your seat on the airplane and has to go in the overhead bin. This means you won’t have access to your laptop if you leave it in the bag. There are multiple zippered mesh pockets inside to help with organization.

My biggest complaint is that there’s no side water bottle pocket! I hate keeping my bottle inside my bag (or worse, clipping it on with a carabiner), so It’s a bummer that there’s no dedicated water bottle holder here. It’s such a simple feature and is standard on most packs, so I’m not sure why Osprey got this one wrong.

It can be a challenge to find a backpack for women , especially those with smaller frames. You need something that carries everything you need without being overly big and bulky. The Patagonia Atom Tote Pack is a compact bag that’s designed to provide a smaller fit while still providing a surprising amount of storage.

Patagonia is one of the most well-known brands in the outdoor industry, and they build some seriously capable gear. My favorite thing about Patagonia, though, is their commitment to sustainability. The Atom Tote Pack is made from recycled nylon and polyester, is Fair Trade Certified, and has a water-repellant finish that is free from harmful PFC chemicals.

The overall design of the pack is very simple and streamlined. There’s a zippered-opening main compartment with a removable laptop sleeve inside. I really like the removable sleeve because it adds a lot of versatility; you can use this pack for your laptop one day and a day hike the next day.

One major downside is that it won’t fit full-size laptops. While that’s to be expected from a small pack like this, it still is a bit of a disappointment. If you have a compact device though, that may be no problem.

There is a stretchy water bottle holder on each side of the pack, meaning it’s easy to stay on top of your hydration while you travel. Even though this is a small-ish bag, there’s room for big bottles like Nalgenes.

Bonus? While Patagonia generally is known for being somewhat expensive, this pack is actually the most affordable on this list!

For men looking for the absolute best laptop backpack, the Peak Design Everyday Backpack is a super functional, versatile, and well-built pack that works well on all fronts. It’s designed to work really well as a camera pack, but it’s capable of way more than that.

First, the laptop storage. The Peak Design Everyday Backpack has a top-access dedicated laptop compartment that is super easy to get into without opening the main body of the bag.

For getting into the main compartment, you have lots of choices. There is a lock-shut flap opening on the top and big zippered openings on either side. The side openings mean it’s really easy to get something out of the bottom of your bag without digging through everything else.

The inside of the bag is padded and has removable dividers that you can use if you’re carrying camera gear (or anything else for that matter). Though this works really well as a camera bag, I’ve found the dividers are actually pretty useful for keeping my everyday electronics organized and accessible.

My biggest complaint with this bag is the price. It is way more expensive than most simple daypacks, and you may have a hard time justifying the spend. If you want a top-notch feature-packed backpack, though, this is a great choice.

Choosing the right laptop backpack is no easy task, and it depends a lot on how will you use it. Do you need a reliable everyday backpack or a spacious carry-on backpack? Will you use it for commuting? travel? hiking? all of the above?

Here are some of the top factors to keep in mind as you search for the perfect pack for your needs.

Laptop Size

This one is easy to overlook, but not all laptop backpacks will fit every laptop. A few years ago I got a new, chunky 15.6-inch laptop for work, only to find it didn’t fit in my old laptop pack. I didn’t want to buy a new bag, so I ended up cutting slits in the side of the laptop compartment to make it fit (this is the same pack where I used a trash bag to keep my laptop dry in downpours).

Needless to say, getting a pack that fits your laptop correctly is a better solution. Most manufacturers will clearly label what size laptop their pack can fit.

When in doubt, I’d get a pack that can fit a 15-inch laptop. This covers most compact and full-size devices (including 15.6-inch screens).

Computers are expensive, delicate machines, and it’s important to keep your laptop safe while you travel. It’s worth looking for a pack that has lots of padding around the laptop compartment.

One feature you can look for is a “suspended” laptop sleeve. This means the sleeve is held up an inch or two from the bottom of the bag so there is more between your laptop and the ground if you ever drop it.

Laptop Accessibility

A bag can have the best laptop protection, sturdiest construction, and most comfortable design out there, but it won’t do its job if it’s impossible to get your laptop out when it’s fully packed. When you’re traveling, it is important to have easy access to your device, whether you need to pull it out for airport security scanning or catch up on work tasks.

I prefer packs with a laptop compartment that is totally separate from everything else. That way I don’t have to dig through the main compartment of my pack to pull it out.

Total Storage

You’re going to be carrying more than just a laptop in your backpack, so it’s important to consider the overall space that’s available. Backpack size is usually measured by how many liters of volume fit inside.

• If you just need to bring your laptop, accessories, and a few small essentials with you, a pack under 20 L should work just fine.
• 20-30 L packs work well if you need to carry more stuff, but aren’t packing everything for a trip in your backpack.
• If you are traveling and will be using your backpack as your only luggage, you’ll probably want 40 L or more of room.

During our lab tests, we were able to fit a laptop, a pair of shoes, toiletries, a shirt, a pullover, and a pair of joggers, as well as a book, wallet, keys, and lotion. Even packed to the brink, the backpack weighed maybe 15 pounds — not a huge burden to tote around an airport. The storage options varied between a protected laptop sleeve, small organization pockets, and water bottle pockets; in addition to a battery pack pocket for USB storage and on-the-go charging capabilities. 

The materials lend themselves to a durable and low-maintenance design. Made with recycled polyester sourced from plastic water bottles, this backpack is water-resistant and can be cleaned with a gentle wipe-down. It also held up to wear and tear, with no marks or visible damage after our durability test.

The cushioned straps are comfortable on your shoulders, though they’re close together up top so it could be uncomfortable for some folks if it rubs your neck. That said, we think it’s one of the most comfortable and well-fitting backpacks of the day. When you consider the storage, durability, high-quality materials, comfort, and low price, this bag is a must for any regular traveler.

How it's held up: When we tried this backpack in the real world, we were continually impressed with its capacity. It’s a bit of a Mary Poppins bag because it almost feels bottomless. We could fit our laptop, several books, cosmetics, snacks, and essentials like a wallet and keys in this spacious bag — with plenty of space left over. The whole back panel even opens up as a protective sleeve for your laptop or tablet. The zippers had smooth closures, and the padded straps made the backpack comfortable to wear throughout the day when traveling. We agree with the lab’s assessment of the straps’ narrowness at the top. That said, this lightweight backpack distributes its weight and you feel the impact more on your hips than your shoulders. But it’s not just a good-looking backpack, it’s functional too. It looks small on the outside, but once you open it, there is more than enough space for a sweater and any tech you have; there’s even a zippered section for a water bottle. While the bag is only available in black, there are several interior colors available as well as various hardware options.

While it comes in two sizes, neither fits a laptop larger than 13 inches. The premium nylon material is water-resistant and quite durable, and because it’s padded all the way through, the laptop survived the fall test. We noticed the material was a little stiff at first, but it became more flexible and adjustable as time went on. You can also use it as a backpack or a tote, thanks to the sleek top handles.

This is a gorgeous bag that’s as eye-catching as it is effective. The design is perfect for everything from commuting to air travel. Even without the detachable bag on the front, there was a good amount of room for storage. The backpack comes in durable nylon or vegan leather options, and both materials are water- and scratch-resistant. The only initial hiccup with the design was the lack of a water bottle holder on the exterior of the bag. 

We loved the look of the vegan leather and though it feels slightly stiff, the bag is comfortable to wear. This bag kept the dummy laptop secure during the drop test — we were impressed with its durability. We think it’s a well-made backpack with thoughtful features like padded handles, plenty of pockets, and a detachable front pouch for staying extra organized.

How it's held up: While home testing for two months, we noticed that the front attached bag falls off occasionally which isn’t ideal, and the deep pockets can be a recipe for losing items at the bottom of your bag. When you travel with a backpack, it has to endure quite a bit of wear and tear. This one-pocket backpack from Troubadour was the most durable among those we tested. Its canvas-like material is actually a recycled polyester, and though lightweight it can sustain a good beating. After dropping it seven times during our tests, it didn’t have any scuff marks or damage and still looked brand new. The amount of padding on the straps creates a super cushioned feel, though it wasn’t super breathable and our tester got a little sweaty when carrying it around.

In addition, the capacity was impressive — we could fit a surprising amount of clothing and cosmetics. The large number of pockets allows for extensive organization, and the water bottle pockets can fit up to a 24-ounce bottle. The design is sleek, and the main compartment is spacious, but we did notice the top of the compartment tapers down slightly, so the opening is a little hard to get into. Though slightly inconvenient, the slides’ fabric expands to help you access the compartment better. Overall, this is a well-designed, durable, and comfortable backpack to invest in.

How it's held up: We found this bag to be spacious, durable, and comfortable for regular commutes. It has a series of pockets and compartments for organization, as well as a protected laptop pocket, which is easy to access and unzip. The main pocket issue also existed in our real-world testing; basically, it’s hard to get into this backpack on the go, because the zipper lives under a tapered flat. So we just had to stop and take the backpack off to get into it. However, the padding was extremely thick and comfortable to wear throughout the day. Though we were nervous about the laptop sleeve not having a padded bottom, the backpack kept the laptop protected during our drop test. We were, though, impressed with the comfort. The straps are nicely padded and adjustable, and a good width apart to feel comfortable around our frame. The overall features of this bag make it very convenient and portable: Its comfortable and durable design, expansive capacity, water-resistant lining, and protective laptop storage make it a fabulous laptop backpack for travel.

How it's held up: We used this bag on two international trips and it fits an astonishing amount. It fully opens, which makes it easy to see where everything is inside (no digging around!). We loved the overall look and design, and while some might find it a bit utilitarian in appearance, considering the price and all the features, we’d say it’s a steal.

How it's held up: Upon receiving this backpack, we threw our old backpack away (literally at the office) and have never looked back. It felt lightweight, and while there wasn’t padding, it didn’t really need any since it’s so small. 

While walking around, the bag was comfortable on our shoulders, even when fully packed. It sat a little low on our backs but that’s not a dealbreaker. It passed the durability test without any marks of scuffs, but since it’s a genuine leather bag, we would advise you to be mindful of its care. Given the material, we understand the higher price tag, but it could be too expensive for some budgets. Overall, we think this is a sleek, quality backpack that would be a fun accessory to take your work on the go. 

How it's held up: When we tried this backpack outside the lab, it fit everything we needed to carry around. We really liked the front pocket for storing quick-grab items like your keys, wallet, and phone. And the fact that it can charge your phone while you’re out doesn’t hurt. We like the look of the buckle straps but in terms of comfort, the backpack sits a little low on our backs. We weren’t particularly careful with the bag, and it still hasn’t scratched. The design and small size would make this an ideal work bag for commuters.

In fact, everything from the test fit in the bag, but it’s definitely more of a commuter bag or a second carry-on, rather than a main bag for a trip. It’s a highly cushioned bag, with plenty of support when wearing it, as well as padding around your laptop for extra protection. 

Other cool features include the USB cord, all of the various organization pockets and compartments, and a trolley strap to attach it to luggage when you don’t feel like carrying it. Our one lament was that there was only one water bottle pocket, and it was not very large. The overall design is super lightweight, and we think the outer and inner materials both seem high quality and durable — plus, nothing was damaged during the drop test. It’s a very sleek bag that doesn’t have a huge capacity, but it looks professional and is extremely organized. It would be a great bag for work commutes or as a personal item on a plane.

To start, it’s huge — we took it camping and we were able to fit an entire tent inside the main compartment as well as clothing and other small gear. There isn’t an actual laptop sleeve for this one, but it can fit a 16-inch laptop and then some.

We hiked with it full for two hours and it was more than comfortable. There are a decent number of pockets, water bottle sleeves, and an extra compartment on the back, perfect for a book or other flat item. It is somewhat heavy, but that’s because of the extra durable material which showed no dirt or wear after a weekend-long camping trip. It’s also waterproof and keeps everything inside dry on a particularly rainy day. 

This one is a little expensive, but if you want a versatile backpack you can use as a carry-on for travel, a pack for camping, or a durable bag for any journey, this is worth the investment. In addition to two water bottle holders (which we wish were a bit larger), there are several hidden pockets for valuables, and many more for organizing. 

We also loved the design of this backpack. The straps and back are also mesh which is great for breathability. Plushy straps, a leather top handle, and classic canvas material are just a few features of this versatile backpack. We were somewhat worried about the canvas collecting dust and being susceptible to stains, but it fared well during testing. It held up during our impact test and protected the laptop from sustaining any damage. We would recommend this product, especially to a student or someone commuting. 

How it's held up: Over two months, we used this backpack about three times per week for work and various times for travel. This backpack has a plush drop-proof laptop sleeve which proved effective during testing — protecting the test laptop from sustaining damage. The backpack feels very durable and offers lots of cushion for the items inside. It’s also compatible with Solagaard’s sister product — the Solarbank Boombox — which acts as a portable charger, Bluetooth, and sound system. The only hiccup is you have to purchase the Solarbank separately.

• Durability: To test the durability and level of protection, we dropped each bag with a prop laptop inside twice, to see if it provided adequate cushioning to keep the computer intact. The laptops were then checked for scratches and damage and turned on to see if the internal hardware had been affected by the impact. As a general rule, most airlines won’t let you carry on a backpack that’s bigger than 22 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 9 inches deep. This is to ensure the bag will fit comfortably underneath the airplane seat or in the overhead compartment. If you have a backpack that exceeds these measurements, you’ll have to add a luggage tag and check it in, so keep the dimensions in mind when making a selection. A durable nylon or polyester will be the most enduring material for a laptop backpack for travel. Both materials are water-resistant, and less susceptible to rips and tears than other materials. In some high-end bags you’ll see leather used, which is fairly durable, and also provides an element of style. So the best material depends on whether you care more about fashion or function.

This attractive but expensive travel backpack has customizable straps and great, cushy padding. It comes in only one size, however.

I traveled with a Farpoint 55 for years, across dozens of countries for months at a time. In 2023, Osprey released new incarnations of the Farpoint 55  and the sized-for-smaller-torsos Fairview 55 .

These new versions mostly kept what we liked about the previous ones and fixed what we didn’t. Best of all, they’re among the least expensive travel backpacks available. After several years as runner-ups, the packs are once again our top picks.

The front of the main pack still unzips like a suitcase, so you can easily fit and access a week’s worth of clothes and toiletries. The daypack, which attaches to the front of the larger pack, has room for camera gear, daily essentials, and a small laptop (via a built-in sleeve). The main pack’s straps can tuck behind a zippered flap, so they won’t catch on anything if you check your luggage.

The best change: The main packs are now overhead-bin-sized for most airlines. (You’ll have to use the daypack as your underseat bag.) Other notable updates include height-adjustable shoulder straps and big exterior pockets on the daypack. Previous versions of these bags used ripstop nylon. The current one uses a heavy-duty recycled polyester, which held up well during a six-week trip across Europe.

Osprey offers a lifetime warranty.

If you want something a little larger than the Osprey packs, the REI Co-op Ruckpack 60+ Recycled Travel Pack - Men’s (for travelers with longer torsos) and the REI Co-op Ruckpack 60+ Recycled Travel Pack - Women’s (for travelers with shorter torsos) are just as adjustable and comfortable. The Ruckpacks had been our top picks for several years—we now prefer the new Ospreys because they’re carry-on sized.

The Ruckpacks have a smaller daypack than the Ospreys, which isn’t as good for photographers and digital nomads, but the main packs are larger, which can be good if you’re carrying bulkier items like a heavy jacket. While not carry-on-sized, the main pack’s overall dimensions are still manageable. The Ruckpack 60+ is also a little cheaper than the Osprey packs.

The Ruckpacks are made from a tough, recycled ripstop nylon that stands up to wear. REI offers a return period of up to a year if you’re a member (90 days if you’re not). However, if the problem is a manufacturing or materials defect, the packs are covered by REI Co-op’s warranty, which has no specified expiration date.

The Salkan The Backpacker looks and feels like a higher-end travel backpack. The polyester cloth feels extremely rugged, and there’s extensive padding in every place the pack touches your body.

Available in black and lightish green, The Backpacker has nine color options for its exterior compression straps, so you can mix and match based on your preferences—or even change them up. This gives The Backpacker the most customizable palette of any of our picks.

While looking more stylish on TikTok and Instagram isn’t generally a primary consideration for us, overall The Backpacker feels well made, and it has many of the same thoughtful features as our top and runner-up picks, including lots of pockets, smooth zippers, and height-adjustable shoulder straps.

These are offset, however, by a much higher price. Also, the main pack is technically too large to be a carry-on for most airlines, and the bag comes in only one size. (Salkan says it’s best for people 5-foot-6 to 6-foot-4).

The research

I’ve lived, worked, and visited 60 countries on six continents, as well as all 50 US states. I spent the majority of 2014 through 2020 traveling. Over the last few years, I’ve done a mix of extended road trips and multi-month international adventures. For all those years, I lived out of a backpack while abroad. I’ve also traveled in Africa, China, and throughout Europe with a variety of terrible backpacks and luggage, so I know what’s best to avoid.

A travel backpack is for people who want to travel around the world unencumbered by heavy, slow-moving wheeled luggage. An internal-frame backpack in the 50- to 65-liter range has more than enough room for all of the possessions you need to travel anywhere for an indefinite amount of time—as long as you’re okay with doing laundry once you get to a destination. (If you’re going to carry heavy jackets, going-out clothes, multiple pairs of footwear, or other bulky gear, you may want something a tad bigger .)

A travel backpack is not for business travelers who’d like to maintain appearances, nor is it for outdoor enthusiasts looking to spend six weeks hiking in Patagonia. Based on my experience and research, we looked for travel backpacks with the following qualities:

• Fifty to 65 liters, including a daypack: We looked at bags between 50 and 65 liters (including an integral, removable daypack). Packs this size can easily hold everything you need for any length of trip, while being small enough to remain manageable while you’re wearing it.
• Clamshell opening: For extended travel use, backpacking backpacks have annoying qualities, including that they tend to load only from the top and are sealed with a drawstring. This design saves weight and means there’s one less thing to break. But it’s a total hassle when you want something from the bottom of the bag because you have to unload and reload the entire pack. We looked for bags where the front zips fully open like a suitcase, making it easy to pack or repack and find things during your trip.
• A well-framed structure: A fully loaded backpack, even a small one, can easily weigh more than 20 pounds. My old Farpoint 55 usually hovered in the mid-30s, though that included a DSLR, three lenses, a battery pack , a laptop, a 360 camera , and other work-related gear. A fully supported internal-frame pack distributes the weight onto your hips, which are much stronger than your back and shoulders. If you’re going to be doing a significant amount of walking, you’ll want something with a frame.
• Durability: We looked for features to help the pack last, like some sort of cover to contain the straps (for easier storage on planes and trains), as well as lightweight and water-resistant materials.
• Plenty of storage (and separation): I’ve done all of my traveling in the past five years with a 55-liter backpack (which includes a 15-liter daypack). I tend to overpack a bit, but 55 liters lets me carry everything I need (the full list is below) for weeks, or even months, at a time.

Here’s what I usually bring for any length of trip (and this is our standard kit for testing):

• main pack (the command module , if you will)
• daypack (the lunar excursion module )
• pair of walking shoes or sneakers (along with the shoes I’m wearing)
• five shirts, one pair of shorts, one pair of jeans (not shown because I wear them in transit), one merino wool underlayer
• warm hat (because my head lacks insulation)
• five pairs of underwear, five pairs of socks, one extra T-shirt for laundry day, one bathing suit (I really recommend packing cubes )
• rain jacket in an Eagle Creek bag
• various adapters , camera batteries, chargers, etc.
• various toiletries, vitamins, etc.
• Osprey rain cover
• razor, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.
• well-worn flip-flops
• travel towel
• portable Bluetooth speaker
• prescription dive mask
• merino wool jacket
• inflatable pillow

• sun hat (because my head hates sun)

For our first version of this guide in 2016, we narrowed our choices to 11 possible contenders. For that initial round of testing, I poked and prodded the different packs to sort out whether they had any obvious flaws or issues. I had adults of various sizes try each pack to get a sense of what short and tall people preferred.

For each subsequent update, including this one, I tested with similar methods whatever new or substantially redesigned packs were available. In between updates, I took one of our picks on some extended travels.

The Osprey Fairview 55 and the nearly identical Osprey Farpoint 55 have been one of our picks since the first version of this guide came out in 2016. (The Fairview is for people with 15- to 19-inch torsos, as measured from the top of your hip bone to your C7 vertebra, the one that sticks out when you press your chin to your chest. The Farpoint is for those with torsos from 17 to 22 inches long.) They’re now our top picks again, and here’s why.

You can carry them on the plane. Once you detach the daypacks, the main packs are now carry-on-sized, making them the most versatile travel backpack we’ve tested. Interestingly, the total capacity remains roughly the same as those of our other picks—that is, we were able to stow the same amount of clothing in this bag as we could in the REI Co-op packs and the Salkan . The daypack, in this case, would count as your personal item—on most airlines, this would mean you couldn’t also bring a large purse or a briefcase.

Or check your bag—your choice. The shoulder straps can be secured behind a zippered panel, so if you want to check the bag or put it in a packed luggage compartment on a train or bus, they won’t catch on anything. Doing this essentially turns the main pack temporarily into a duffle bag, complete with sturdy and well-padded handles on the top and side.

They’re adjustable. Like our other picks, the main pack has height-adjustable shoulder straps. This crucial feature lets you get an all-important personalized fit that makes carrying the pack for any length of time far easier. The straps were padded enough for our testers’ comfort (though not as cushy as the Salkan’s, and slightly less so than the REI Co-op’s).

They have comfortable, easy-to-use daypacks. The daypacks are roughly the same size, or a little larger, than those of our other picks, something travelers who plan to cart lots of camera gear or other daily essentials will appreciate. The top of the shoulder straps connect to form a sturdy handle, which is extremely, ahem, handy. Each daypack easily holds a 15-inch MacBook and is comfortable to wear over long treks. There are two large exterior mesh pockets for water bottles . Though the daypack is a little short on organizational slots and pockets, its comfort made it the best overall.

The backpacks are tough. The Farpoint and the Fairview are made from 450-denier recycled polyester, which feels thick and sturdy, though more “plasticky” compared to the Salkan. (Denier is a measure of the fiber thickness in a fabric.) I put the Farpoint through six weeks of train, bus, and airplane trips across Europe, and it didn’t show any signs of wear or breaking.

You can attach a lock, if you want. Unlike the Salkan The Backpacker, both the main pack and the daypack’s main zippers are lockable.

The backpacks come in more color options than our other picks. Currently, the Farpoint comes in black, green, blue, and grey. The Fairview comes in black, green, red, and purple.

The packs include a lifetime warranty. Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee covers repair of any damage or defect for life—or replaces the pack, if repair is impossible. If you just want to return the pack unused, you have 30 days.

It’s been a pick in this guide for seven years—and counting. I have put my money where my mouth is, so to speak. After testing this 2023 pack, I liked it so much that I bought one for myself, replacing an Osprey Farpoint that had been my go-to pack for years of travel.

It comes in additional capacities. If you already have a daypack that you like, the Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 are just the main pack from the 55 (they’re also picks in our guide to carry-on travel backpacks ). You can add the daypack later if you want. If you want more space and don’t mind checking your luggage, the Osprey Farpoint 70 and the Osprey Fairview 70 are slightly larger versions of their Farpoint 55 and Fairview 55 counterparts—anything we’ve said about the Farpoint 55 and the Fairview 55 also applies to them. They would work well for those who want to go with the Osprey but need more room in the main pack for, say, clothes for multiple climates, bulky items like ski parkas, and the like.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

• The U-shaped opening of the daypack is surprisingly small, restricting access. You can’t easily spot things at the bottom or carry bulky items. On the other hand, this does limit what might spill out of the pack if you forget to fully close it, something that has happened to me several times with the old half-clamshell design.
• Previous versions of the Farpoint and the Fairview had large zippers that basically fused the daypack to the main pack. With this version, the daypack hangs off the back, secured only by the nylon compression straps. The straps loop through reinforced parts of the daypack, so it seems reasonably secure, and this new design does let you stuff more things in both packs—but as someone who carries a lot of expensive gear in the daypack, I’m less than excited about it.
• The pack isn’t as comfortable as the heavily padded Salkan. Osprey seems to have prioritized weight and breathability over padding. In warmer climates, though, this could be a good thing.
• Unlike our other picks, the Farpoint and the Fairview don’t include a rain cover. One is available separately, however. Osprey recommends the large size for the 55 L packs.
• The new design is slightly smaller than the old one, as well as being a little smaller than the REI Co-op and Salkan packs.
• Lastly, while looks are entirely subjective, the Farpoint and the Fairview are very much “backpack-looking backpacks.” The dark color choices are safe, to put it mildly.

The REI Co-op Ruckpack 60+ Recycled Travel Pack - Men’s and the REI Co-op Ruckpack 60+ Recycled Travel Pack - Women’s were previously our top picks, until they were replaced this year by the improved Osprey packs.

It’s easy to get just the right fit. The Ruckpack has well-padded and height-adjustable straps, closer in size and padding to those of the Salkan than those of the Osprey . Like the Osprey but unlike the Salkan, the Ruckpack comes in two models, one marketed toward men and the other toward women. The men’s model, available in black or blue, is for people with torsos between 17 and 21 inches. The women’s model, available in black or reddish orange, fits torsos between 15 and 19 inches.

It’s sturdy. The Ruckpack uses a recycled, 210-denier ripstop nylon. It feels similarly sturdy as the Osprey, though not as sturdy as the Salkan. Previous versions of the Ruckpack have held up well over time, and we’ll continue testing to see how the 2023 version wears.

It’s bigger than the Osprey, although the daypack is smaller. Capacity wise, there’s a bit more room in the Ruckpack’s main pack than in the slightly smaller Osprey’s. The daypack, however, is a little smaller. Which backpack works better depends on what gear you carry and how you want to carry it. If you have a lot of things you want on your person at all times, the Osprey is better. If you have more or bulkier clothes, and no camera or less-bulky daypack gear, the REI might be better.

It has more pockets than our top pick. These pockets are on the inside (three are accessible via external zippers) and the outside (on the hip belt, for instance). This is especially convenient if you want to quickly stash items or get to them without having to open the main compartment. And, unlike the Osprey packs, the Ruckpack includes a rain cover.

You will have to check it. The Ruckpack’s dimensions make it too large to qualify as a carry-on, even if you detach the daypack from the main pack. The main pack’s straps can be stored behind a zippered panel when you check your bag.

The main pack’s zippers are easily lockable. However, the daypack’s zippers don’t have the standard holes for easy locking. Instead, you have to thread the lock through the holes in the pull tabs. This isn’t a huge deal, but it’s an odd oversight.

REI has a good return policy. REI has a one-year “ 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed ” return policy if you’re a member (90 days if you’re not). This is not quite as epic as Osprey’s lifetime guarantee, but you should have enough time to determine whether or not you like the pack. However, if the issue is a manufacturing defect, you should be able to return it any time.

The Salkan The Backpacker is a higher-end travel backpack for people who want the comfort of our top pick but are willing to pay more for swappable design options and more organization.

It has more organization than our top pick. The capacity of the main pack is 45 liters, basically the same as that of our main picks . It has more organization and compartments than the Osprey packs, however. There are two large water-bottle compartments on either side and a laptop compartment inside, as well as several other small, zippered compartments. In addition to the main zippered hatch, the top opens with a drawstring like a hiking backpack, allowing fast access or storage. This drawstring design does allow you to stuff a bit more into the pack than the Osprey or REI Co-op packs. However, the main pack is technically too tall to be a carry-on for most airlines.

It has the best padding. The shoulder straps are well padded—the best I’ve seen—and height adjustable. The back panel and hip straps are generously padded, too. All this does make the pack nearly twice as heavy as the Osprey, though we’re talking only a few pounds (under 8 pounds compared with the Farpoint’s 4-plus pounds). For reference, the Farpoint, fully loaded with all my clothes, heavy camera gear, and so on, was around 35 pounds, including the bag itself.

You can customize it. The pack is available in two main colors: black and light green. In addition, the straps have complementary color options, including orange (shown above), pink, and maroon, plus five other choices. This allows for more personalization and flair compared to the Osprey and REI Co-op packs. Salkan also sells several accessories to go with The Backpacker, such as packing cubes, water bottles, and a laundry bag that attaches to the inside of the main pack.

It’s sturdy—but has not-so-great attachments. The bag’s 900-denier polyester fabric (even stronger than our top pick’s 450-denier fabric) is extremely strong and should resist rips or tears. What zippers The Backpacker has run smoothly, but the design oddly eschews them in key places. While the main compartment has a zipper, as do multiple smaller compartments, the main and daypack’s top openings do not, using drawstrings and a flap instead. These flaps are secured with aluminum “G”-shaped hooks (Salkan calls them buckles) that slide into nylon straps. The hooks feel nice in your hand and could well last longer than the plastic clips on the Osprey and REI Co-op packs. However, connecting them takes a few moments longer than using a clip or zipper would—time that adds up. They also feel less secure, like they could slide loose under load and movement. (These hooks are also what connect the daypack to the main pack.)

It has a great warranty. Salkan has a “ ‘No Landfill’ Lifetime Guarantee ”: “If there is something wrong with your backpack that shouldn’t be, then we’ll try to repair it, and if we can’t, we’ll replace it.” In addition, the company has a 100-day trial period within which you can return or exchange the pack if you don’t like it.

But it’s pricey. The Backpack costs much more than the Osprey or REI Co-op packs. While it’s arguably better-looking than either, this doesn’t add much functional difference. The pack’s comfortable, but so are the others. It’s adjustable, but so are the others. It comes with a rain cover, but so does the REI Co-op pack, and Osprey’s is $40. Is the Salkan’s extra cost and organization worth the better aesthetics? That’s not for me to say.

And we couldn’t attach a lock. There’s no way to lock either the main pack or the daypack. There’s no way to attach a lock to the “G” hooks. The nylon drawstrings at the main pack’s top opening, as well as the daypack’s, offer no practical way of attaching a lock. For such a well-designed and feature-rich pack, this is a surprising oversight. Is this a dealbreaker? Probably not, at least for most people. With the daypack buckled and the drawstring closed, it’s highly unlikely someone could reach in while you’re wearing it without you noticing. However, I frequently leave my pack in luggage rooms at hotels or the occasional hostel without lockers, and not being able to lock it when it’s out of sight would concern me.

This is not a comprehensive list of everything we tested in previous iterations of this guide—just what’s still available.

During our research, we checked out a number of companies that make great packs, but none of those packs met all of our criteria. In most cases this was because the company specialized in top-loading bags, bags with wheels, bags that were too big, or very large bags that didn’t include daypacks. These companies included Black Diamond, Berghaus, Dakine, Eagle Creek, eBags, EMS, Ferrino, Gregory, High Sierra, Kathmandu, Kelty, Minaal, MEI, The North Face, Ortovox, Outdoor Research, Patagonia, Rick Steves, Thule, Timbuk2, and Victorinox.

The Deuter Aviant Access Pro has many of the features we liked, but its daypack is too small. The pack’s also more expensive than our top picks.

The men’s and women’s Thule Landmark 60L are well-made, sturdy packs, with a wide main-pack opening and most of the same features that we like in the other packs. They’re more expensive, though, and the daypacks aren’t as comfortable.

The Tropicfeel Shelter Backpack is a highly customizable pack to which you can add “modules” that expand capacity or change its use. It’s a cool idea, and the pack seems well designed, but it’s extremely expensive and doesn’t really add that much practical use over our main picks.

When you’re looking for a new travel backpack, the options are seemingly endless, as are the features and the price. It’s easy to get carried away and spend $300, $400, or even $800 on a travel pack, but what if you’re a casual traveler or just beginning your one bag carry on journey? Don’t get us wrong, that $800 backpack is really great, but you might not want to make such a sizable investment if you don’t travel full-time.

Enter tomtoc . The brand is well-known for its affordability, yet it aims to protect your digital gear in an innovative and tech-savvy way. So what happens when you have those aspirations while creating a large carry on travel backpack that works for business or family travel? Let’s find out!

External Components

A lot is happening around the exterior of this 40L laptop bag , beginning with the 100% post-consumer polyester made from PET plastic bottles. It has an interesting texture that seems quite thick and durable and has no issues when stuffed in a car trunk, the overhead bin of an airplane, or your hotel room closet. Indeed, the material looks pretty much like it did when we started using it a few weeks ago, even after daily commutes and a family trip to Florida.

There’s a bit of sunscreen on the back, a slight scuff on the front only visible when you look closely, and several loose threads scattered around the bag, but that’s it. It remains to be seen if the threads will continue to unravel or just be annoying, but it’s probably one of the most obvious nods to the inexpensive nature of this bag.

There’s a rubbery logo near the top left corner of the front of the bag and a small “tomtoc original” label sewn to the edge of the back panel, and that’s about it for branding. The brand placement seems slightly odd only because of the bag’s structure. It’s easily visible when the bag is stuffed full for a trip, yet when you empty it and cinch down the compression straps, the top folds over and obscures it slightly. You can straighten the front panel out to mitigate this, but perhaps tomtoc has enough self-confidence that it doesn’t feel the need to shout its name to the crowd.

Speaking of which, four compression straps on the bag connect with unbranded buckles. They contain the bulk of the pack after you’ve unpacked or when you’re taking a shorter trip, and we also thread the top ones through the handle of a water bottle to hold it in place when we have to lay the Navigator-A82 down. There aren’t any strap keepers here, and the adjusters can work themselves loose after a while, but, for the most part, they get the job done.

There are two carry handles on the tomtoc Navigator-A82, as well. The top one is extremely cushy and has breathable mesh on the underside. However, carrying the bag this way for too long is hard if you’re on the shorter side. So we were happy to see a carry handle on the left side of the bag, as well, until we tried to carry the fully packed bag by this handle through the airport. It, unfortunately, lacks any padding and is a simple webbing strap. While that makes it lay flat and out of your way if you don’t need it, we would have appreciated a little padding.

If you’re packing for a longer trip and using the Travel Laptop Backpack with rolling luggage, there’s a pass-through strap on the back panel for the handle to slide through. It’s vertically oriented, so you’ll have to turn the bag on its side to do this; however, since it’s such a tall bag, that makes a lot of sense so you don’t have the top of the bag rubbing your hand as you walk through the airport.

While the buckles are unbranded, the zippers are not; they’re YKK and work well. We say that because the only hiccup we encounter has nothing to do with the zippers or their tracks but with the pulls. Cords woven through the metal pulls end at 1-inch plastic knobs with the tomtoc name debossed on them. That’s great for grabbing the zippers, especially as they’re all hidden under fabric welts to keep moisture at bay. However, the zipper cord and pull for the top quick-grab pocket frequently falls into the track of the laptop compartment, preventing you from smoothly zipping that area. The zippers are right next to each other at the top of the bag, so there’s really no way to avoid this happening, and it’s something to keep in mind as you close up the bag.

After you get it situated and swing it on, you’ll notice this backpack’s very comfortable harness system. There are four panels of mesh-covered, cushioned padding to blunt the feeling of what you’ve packed inside. It forms nicely to your back, especially if you leave your laptop behind, but it still cushions the blow of your device when you bring one. The luggage pass-through creates a vertical air channel, and the padding has another horizontal break to promote airflow. We have to say, we didn’t end up with a sweaty back, even in high Florida humidity. Things may heat up if you carry it for hours, but this isn’t a hiking backpack, so you’re less likely to need to do so. Going from the car to the airport to the Uber to the hotel and your room isn’t long enough to be a problem.

The shoulder straps are also well padded, and while the cushion extends to where they connect to the bag, we haven’t had issues with them pulling at the traps. They seem to have enough flexibility of movement to accommodate differently-sized users. On the left strap is an attachment point where we hook hand sanitizer to keep it nearby while traveling, and there is also a sternum strap to help carry the load. It slides on a piece of webbing on each shoulder strap for granular adjustment and stays where you place it. There are elastic keepers on this and the shoulder straps to contain the excess.

So, we have to say the flexibility we mentioned above can lead to a saggy look, especially when you’re carrying less gear. However, while the lack of a frame sheet may be off-putting to some users, others may find the flexible yet cushioned rear panel forms nicely to the back. If you want more rigidity, slide in your laptop. It adds structure otherwise lacking in the back panel.

Almost all of that sagginess disappears when you pack it for a trip. The tomtoc branding shows clearly, and the bag stands tall and proud like a soldier waiting for orders. It does not have the extreme boxiness of some travel backpacks and is, instead, a little rounder while not being so curvy that it is hard to pack. Your mileage will vary as to how you feel about this, but some of our testers appreciate the fact that it doesn’t look like you’re carrying a suitcase on your back.

Inside The Pack

There are a lot of places to fill outside of the main compartment, so buckle up and get ready for the ride.

We’ll start at the top with that quick-access pocket we alluded to earlier. Aside from the zipper sometimes getting caught in another track, this is a good place for your phone, wallet, and keys, especially when the bag is full. While a stuffed main compartment slightly impacts how much room is in this pocket, heavier gear in the top pocket weighs the top down when it’s empty, leading to sagginess.

Instead, we find it easier—and more aesthetically pleasing—to toss quick grab gear in the larger pocket along the front panel with the bag compressed. You still have plenty of room for a phone, wallet, keys, and more, yet it doesn’t drag down the top of the bag. Plus, it’s just as easy to access through the vertical zipper on the left side. If you are heading out on a trip, it’s just another place to put gear you want to access throughout the journey, so fill it with snacks, masks, or even a paperback book.

There are travel water bottle pockets on each side of the bag, so you can carry water and coffee, or bottles for yourself and a friend, or a bottle and umbrella. Whatever you choose, you’ll find the pockets are pretty wide and include elastic at the top to go around thicker gear. If you sip from something thinner, like a Hydro Flask Standard Mouth Bottle , and it includes a handle (again like the Hydro Flask), you can feed the top compression strap through the handle to hold it in place so it doesn’t slide out at security or anywhere else you may lie the bag down.

On the back of the bag, a double-sided zipper runs around the top three sides and even turns the corner to the bottom. That’s because the laptop compartment is designed for you to send the bag through with your computer still inside the backpack—if your TSA officer allows it. It will lie flat on the conveyor belt and should allow the X-ray machine to do its job. Of course, if security tells you to take your devices out of the bag, just do it. Taking the time to educate them on your bag’s design is not worth the effort and is unlikely to affect your experience.

Inside, you’ll find a large padded sleeve that holds up to a 17-inch laptop and includes a nice false bottom to protect your computer if your bag falls off the hook in the restroom (not that that happened to us…). In front of it is another padded sleeve for a tablet or, frankly, a second, smaller laptop—a 13-inch MacBook Air fits nicely. There is a large webbing strap that attaches via a long strip of hook-and-loop fastener to hold your devices in place. We like the adjustability it gives you to tighten it further over different size devices.

On the opposite side is a large zipper mesh pocket. It’s located near the bottom of the compartment, though, so it’s not as easy to access if you only open this area partway. Still, if you don’t have a separate tech pouch , it’s a good place for your cords, chargers, and other accessories.

You’ll find a large red tab at the top of this side (adjacent to the main compartment, in case you got lost). It’s surrounded by two zippers with red corded pulls. Pull the tab to unzip and reveal rear access to the main compartment. Since it uncovers that entire section, it can make it easier to pack if you don’t like doing so through the front. It’s also a convenient way to pull out your 3-1-1 bag in the TSA line or shove in a sweatshirt if you get too hot without undoing the compression straps since they don’t block the laptop compartment.

You can also access the main compartment through the front of the bag. Unbuckle the compression straps on the left side to access the zipper, which runs between the back of the quick-access pocket in a backward C along the left side to just below the bottom compression strap on the right side of the bag.

When you open it this way, it looks a bit like a duffle bag or a suitcase, with a large space ready to fill. Along the bottom, you’ll find a stiff piece of (we’re guessing) plastic coated in the same tomtoc-printed liner fabric as the rest of the bag’s interior. You can push it to the right, toward the bottom of the bag, if it was upright, and it stiffens up that side to provide structure while you pack. We think that’s a unique solution to the problem of saggy, hard-to-pack sides. Instead, when you push it into place, this main compartment becomes quite easy to fill, especially if you put packing cubes , toiletry bags , and pouches to good use.

There aren’t any internal straps or pockets in this area to hold your clothing in place or stash small gear, so we really recommend using cubes and other methods of organization to keep your tees, shorts, and shoes from sliding around willy-nilly as you walk. The large size Herschel Supply Co. Travel Organizer fits nicely on the bottom of this bag, leaving room for the small and medium cubes toward the top.

While some may say this bag doesn’t look as big as other 40-liter bags, the flexible material allows you to pack quite a bit inside. We easily fit everything we needed for a 5-day trip inside with some room to spare to bring home souvenirs. Is there a perfect personal item for a flight that doubles as a laptop backpack?

I got the Tortuga Laptop Backpack, and right away, I sensed that in its features, I was looking at one of the best laptop bags for travel to date. After taking it on my trip to Halifax, Canada, as well as on some day trips closer to home, I have some thoughts that I’ll share with you in this review.

You can decide if the price tag on this thought-out and durable laptop backpack (and airplane “personal item”) is worth the investment. Be sure to check out my photos of how it looks, too.

A bit about Tortuga Backpacks

Dan first told me about Tortuga when he was on Remote Year . When looking for bags, he found the brand as one of the more solid high-quality travel bag companies out there.

These days, the brand is still alive and well, and Tortuga is even releasing some new products optimized for travelers .

The Tortuga product offering is rather simple now. You can shop for travel backpacks , the Laptop Backpack (this review!) or accessories . If you want to keep all your travel gear matching, you can go with all Tortuga gear, because it all comes (only) in black. Honestly, I like black a lot: it shows less dirt, fewer scuffs, and looks minimalist in my travel photos.

Tortuga started with two friends who agreed that suitcases didn’t let you travel hands-free, and that the type of luggage you have can really make or break your trip.

Tortuga products prioritize a few very meaningful travel qualities: durability, comfort, organization and size. They emphasize the importance of the airline traveler who will be seeking for easy-to-understand yes-no answers on questions like, “Is this bag the correct size to be a carry-on?” or “Can this bag fit under an airplane seat?”

Recently, Tortuga has started grouping the Tortuga products by function or purpose , which is a nice thing to explore on the website . You can search by under-seat luggage, carry-on luggage and commuter backpacks. The website also calls out features like bags that protect against theft and pickpockets .

Background on the Tortuga Laptop Backpack

The Tortuga Laptop Backpack is an addition to the already-existing carry-on sized 30L and 40L Travel Backpacks . It is a totally unisex bag geared toward travelers of all ages who appreciate quality builds and comfort.

The Laptop Backpack is meant to be a “personal item” on a flight. As you’ll see in my experience traveling with it, below, it is a pretty roomy and forgiving backpack to take as your under-the-seat item on a plane. It fits perfectly below the seat in front of you.

The Laptop Backpack is probably meant for the traveler who wants to travel and work remotely , as I often do. If you know me or Dan, you can sense that we are always working on this website and all our gear reviews !

In addition to focusing on safe laptop stowing and handy pockets, the Laptop Backpack from Tortuga organizes my in-flight essentials (everything from a spare toothbrush to an extra shirt). It’s also a day bag or daypack, that can take you to a coworking space or maybe just around a new city, when you need a backpack that’ll fit a windbreaker, a water bottle, a guidebook or snacks.

The more I’ve used this bag, the more I can also see it working as a daypack shared between two people, because it could probably fit two peoples’ sweaters, travel-sized umbrellas, a travel camera or other things. Two people could take turns wearing this backpack around a city so that one of them can take a break from wearing a backpack. I think I’ll suggest this idea to Dan.

Main features of the Tortuga Laptop Backpack

Here are the main features of Tortuga’s Laptop Backpack , as well as my thoughts on them and how they worked out for me during my trial run with the bag.

I went to Halifax, Nova Scotia and used the Tortuga Laptop Backpack as my personal item on the flight, while checking my Quince suitcase that had my, Dan’s and our baby’s stuff.

Sized to be a personal item

I found that the Laptop Backpack is a perfect bag to go under the seat on an airplane. And speaking of going to the airport, it’s easy to take out my laptop from the laptop compartment during airport security.

The size of the backpack worked out well for me. I was able to fit a sweatshirt (I fly with the Aviator hoodie ), my MacBook Air and a backup change of clothes (in case my checked luggage got lost — a real fear of mine because I am a carry-on type of person). I also fit in a heap of veggie travel snacks and travel day essentials, like some travel-sized toiletries and passports for me, Dan and our daughter.

Laptop compartment

I like that I can access my laptop in this backpack from the sides or the front. Specifically when I’m going to be flying, it is important to me to have a backpack that has a dedicated laptop compartment with its own zipper.

Gone are the days when I’m going to fly with a personal item that has to go through security, and my laptop is in a sleeve with stuff like a jacket and my snacks (see a theme here?) layered on top of it. This gets messy.

The Tortuga Laptop Backpack has a padded laptop sleeve (it’ll fit up to a 16” laptop), lined with handy pockets. It has a Velcro flap that keeps the laptop secure and avoids sliding.

The pockets on the laptop sleeve have spaces for things like an Apple Pencil , a pen, card pockets (if you don’t use a wallet, or have extra things like hotel keys and metro passes) and that tablet sleeve in addition to a smaller e-reader pocket. You could also fit a notebook in any of those flat larger mesh pockets.

Laptop storage

Here’s a tip: you can even fit two laptops and a small tablet (like an iPad ) or Kindle inside. Dan and I sometimes share a bag when we go to a coworking space or cafe to get some work done. If we’re not going far, we sometimes use one bag. This backpack works for us with his MacBook Pro and my MacBook Air . We’ve brought along an iPad, and it also fits without any issues.

The laptop storage is what spurred me to include the Tortuga Laptop Backpack in my default packing list for working remotely during travel .

Two water bottle pockets

Yes, this backpack has two water bottle pockets (!!). This is great if you’re a righty, or a lefty, or if you just can’t decide which side to keep your water bottle on.

Or, maybe you walk around a new city with both a water bottle and a coffee thermos . Either way, I enjoyed that this backpack had two spots for drink bottles, because Dan and I used both of them during our trip.

Front pocket

This pocket is best for storing flat items or smaller loose items, like all my granola bars (yes, I travel with quite a few, just in case I’m not near food and I get hungry).

You could fit a small Kindle in there, or a notebook for your travel journal needs.

Sternum strap

I’m a fan of sternum straps, because, as someone on the short and small size of average American adults, I like something that can help take weight from my shoulders and put it elsewhere.

I often wind up using sternum straps on backpacks and the Tortuga Laptop Backpack has one that adjusts and slides.

Luggage pass-through

I definitely used the luggage pass-through strap to secure the Laptop Backpack onto my suitcase. It was functional. You’ll see below in my criticisms what I thought could improve about it.

It looks like Tortuga recommends also using the sternum strap as an additional way to secure the Laptop Backpack to any suitcase when you’re walking through the airport. Unfortunately, I didn’t try this.

Grab handle

A grab handle is important to me, both for pulling a bag out of a car or an overhead bin, as well as hanging it from a hook in a restroom. The strap on this backpack is sturdy and strong.

Top exterior pocket

I used this pocket quite a lot, actually. Typically, I take trips with a travel fanny pack , but this time, we flew with our baby, and I used my Kibou , which didn’t have room for our passports.

We kept all three of our passports in the top pocket of the Tortuga Laptop Backpack , so I was thankful for that pocket. It was just the right size, and very secure.

I also used the key holder to attach my keys, which I knew I wouldn’t need during a trip to Canada! I wanted to make sure they were secure and in a specific place for when we got home.

Also, for added convenience, the top pocket is also accessible right into the main cavity via a zipper. Surprise!

Lockable zippers

If you need to lock up your bag with valuables inside, or if you’re checking out of your accommodation and leaving the bag in storage for the day, you can lock these zippers with a travel lock .

There’s a small circular hole in the exterior zippers that can help protect against theft in these situations if you put a lock there.

What I didn’t like about the Tortuga Laptop Backpack

In this section, I’ll walk through some of the things that I didn’t totally like about using the Tortuga Laptop Backpack.

I found the luggage pass-through to be a bit thin and flimsy, which surprised me.

It worked when I needed to attach the back to my Quince rolling suitcase , but it was absolutely not as secure as some other bags that we’ve used, like the Trouabdour Ki Backpack or the Away Daypack .

It was the most surprising aspect, for me, and it seemed like an afterthought for a very well-thought-out and useful backpack. I think it could have been crafted in a different way and with thicker elastic.

Laptop securing flap

The Velcro laptop securing flap on the padded laptop sleeve sometimes got in the way, and I wish it was removable. I didn’t feel like I needed it during the times when I’ve traveled with my laptop inside. The friction from my laptop seemed to be enough to keep it in place.

There’s nothing wrong with having extra protection. Some users of this backpack might feel like this gets in the way when wanting to take your laptop out of the bag in a quick setting, like at airport security.

I can see how it is useful for a MacBook Air, though, because a lighter laptop like mine can slide around more easily than a heavier and larger one. We tested the backpack both with my MacBook Air as well as Dan’s MacBook Pro .

The top pocket, which can hold a considerable amount of stuff, felt top-heavy when I put a lot up there, like dense snacks. If you have a heavy tech pouch or maybe an empty water bottle, the top pockets tends to be a little floppy.

For this reason, consider that more lightweight items should go in the top exterior pocket to avoid the entire backpack being top-heavy (as I did experience this).

Not great for petite women

I’m short, at 5’2”. In all honesty, I don’t think this backpack looks too fantastic on me because I look best in smaller feminine backpacks, like my Troubadour Momentum backpack . I also have a small frame, and I wear petite clothes. It could just be that I’m not meant to wear a 24L backpack as a daypack. In fact, I do prefer smaller daypacks.

This bag looks great on Dan, though, and would likely look great on most men. If you’re a woman taller than I am, or with any build bigger than mine, you should do just fine in how this bag not only looks, but feels, on your body.

The materials and specs

When Dan and I test bags and travel apparel , we have a good sense if the product is high in quality by the feel. I’m sure you’ve felt the same thing when rummaging through stores where you normally shop.

Material feels cheap when it’s thin, feels a little too lightweight, has flimsy and plastic zippers and low-quality hardware. In the past, I was using a backpack that had zippers that broke in just a year and a half of use. That was incredibly disappointing, because it put the bag basically out of commission for me.

When I first got the Tortuga Laptop Backpack , the material makeup immediately gave me a sense of, “Ah, this bag is built with a lot of intention in the materials and the design.” Tortuga has a page dedicated to the material of their products, so you can learn more.

Here’s a summary from that page:

• The Tortuga Laptop Bag is made from 200D recycled polyester with a 200 gsm weight.
• The material, SHELL200, is a three-layer laminated sailcloth, which is known for its durability, lightweight footprint and waterproofness.
• It’s fairly abrasion-resistant, and has a high threshold for tear strength.
• The zippers are YKK, which are the industry standard of high-quality zippers. They better last for years!

The volume of the bag is rated at 24L, and I feel like I can utilize that space fairly well. I categorized this bag as a smaller-size backpack in my list of the best women’s travel backpacks , because it’s not quite 30L, and it works as a larger-end daypack.

The top pocket has a good amount of space, and helps add to the back without feeling like I need to overstuff the capacity.

The main cavity actually felt like it was going to keep giving me more space. When I flew to Nova Scotia from NYC , it was one of the first times I left for a trip and my personal item was NOT bursting with stuff. I was kind of thinking like, how am I going to fill this up, and do I need to? Maybe I just pack more efficiently, nowadays!

With nothing packed, the bag weighs 2.1 pounds. It’s not too heavy, like some canvas or nylon bags, and it doesn’t feel too light, as if all of your stuff is going to break the bag.
