How to watch Star Trek Discovery Season 4 in the UK with Pluto TV

Boldly go where you've not gone before and sign up for Pluto TV

Star Trek: Discovery

Only a few days after learning Trekkies in the UK and parts of Europe won't be able to watch the new season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery after Netflix lost the rights to the show, Pluto TV is here to save the day – and it's free.

The latest season of Star Trek : Discovery will be available on Pluto TV, a free, no sign-up TV service from ViacomCBS, in the UK, as well as Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland, from November 26, 2021.

The sci-fi series has always been exclusive to Paramount Plus , a service that's available in the US, some Latin American countries, Australia and some Scandinavian countries. But everyone else was able to watch seasons 1 to 3 on Netflix.

However, just before the new season was about to drop, a new deal meant Netflix lost rights to the show – and fans were furious. Not only was this announcement last minute, but there was also no clear answer about when they'd get to see season 4 at all – a situation that speaks to the confusing nature of streaming services in 2021.

But, luckily, the move that even Spock would have called "highly illogical" is now not an issue for UK viewers who have the option to watch season 4 of Discovery on Pluto TV, where new episodes will be shown on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm local time. Stand down, red alert.

What is Pluto TV?

If you want to watch Star Trek: Discovery but you're dragging your heels about signing up for another streaming service, don't worry. Pluto TV is a bit different.

Firstly, if you haven't heard of Pluto TV before, don't worry. It's becoming increasingly popular, but it isn't a Netflix or Amazon Prime competitor.

Get daily insight, inspiration and deals in your inbox

Get the hottest deals available in your inbox plus news, reviews, opinion, analysis and more from the TechRadar team.

Instead, it's a free, ad-supported streaming service from Viacom, the owners of MTV, Nickelodeon and more, that works on a range of devices. The good news is, you don't even need to sign-up for it. You can go to pluto.tv right now and start watching.

But it doesn't just have a different business model to Netflix, Pluto TV offers up lots of different channels of TV and movie content. However, rather than local channels – or some the ones you'd find in a standard Sky package – there are more than 100 channels, some of them quite niche.

For example, in terms of movie channels you have Horror, Sci-Fi and Thriller to choose from, among others. But there's also an entire channel dedicated to just Mythbusters and another to only fans of Sherlock. There are also some live channels and on-demand shows, too. If you suffer from decision fatigue and never know what to watch, prepare to be even more overwhelmed.

But if you like having loads of choice as well as the freedom to watch for free without signing up – Pluto TV's tagline is literally 'Drop in. Watch free' – then this could be your new favourite TV service.

To get started with Pluto TV, you can head to pluto.tv to watch it in your browser. Or download the Pluto TV app, which is available on many devices and all major platforms, including Apple devices , Google and Android devices , Amazon devices and many more.

You'll also find Pluto TV in some cool and unlikely places too, like in BigScreenVR , which shows you all of the TV service's programming on your choice of huge virtual cinema screens – some are in space and some are around a campfire – where you can watch with your friends.

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 4 will stream on Pluto TV in some countries

The move is a consolation prize for fans who lost netflix access..

Don't panic that Star Trek: Discovery vanished from Netflix in many countries right before season 4 arrived — you might have a stopgap solution, depending on where you live. ViacomCBS has revealed that Discovery 's latest season will be available on the company's free Pluto TV service in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK starting November 26th. New episodes will be available each Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9PM local time. There will be a simulcast on the Star Trek channel in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

If you'd rather have more permanent copies, people in France, Germany, Russia, South Korea and the UK can also buy the fourth season from "participating digital platforms" starting on the 26th. If Paramount+ is already available in a country, such as Australia, many Latin American countries and Scandinavian nations, you'll have to sign up but can get 50 percent off the first three months with the code STARTREK.

This still leaves former Netflix viewers a step behind their Paramount+ counterparts, but they at least won't have to wait until 2022 to follow Michael Burnham's latest exploits. And ViacomCBS wins regardless — this might spike Pluto TV membership, even if only some users stick around once Paramount+ is available in their regions.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 4 Debuting Internationally On Friday On Pluto TV And Paramount+

Last week ViacomCBS surprised the world by announcing they had bought back the international rights for Star Trek: Discovery from Netflix, with the launch of season four outside North America moved to Paramount+ internationally in early 2022. But today they announced they are moving that release date up to this Friday.

Season 4 arrives this week internationally

The news of the move from Netflix to Paramount+ along with the last-minute delay until early 2022 did not go over well with fans, and even the cast and creatives behind the show were caught off guard . Today ViacomCBS International Networks made a new announcement to make it clear to fans that they are listening. The statement starts with:

To all of the International Star Trek: Discovery fans: we hear you. We love this series too. We love it for the incredible cast, the hardworking crew, the imaginative storytelling, the groundbreaking, diverse characters who bring the show to life and what it represents to so many people around the world. Star Trek has always put its fans first. We want to do the same.

In order to accommodate the transition from Netflix to Paramount+ internationally, they pledge to do “everything we can to get the new season to you as soon as possible.” How this will be done will differ based on country (see specifics below). The statement concludes with this pledge:

We too are super fans of Star Trek and incredibly proud of Discovery . We promise to give this franchise and its loyal fans all the global love and visibility it deserves in our expanding universe on Paramount+.

Current Paramount+ countries

Paramount+ has already launched in a number of territories and season four will debut on Friday, November 26 in these countries with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes being released weekly. Paramount+ is currently available in Latin America, the Nordic Countries, and Australia. They are also offering fans signing up to Paramount+ a 50% off promotion for their first three months using the code: STARTREK.

Pluto TV Europe

In Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, season 4 will be made available on ViacomCBS’ free live streaming service Pluto TV . New episodes will drop at 9 pm local time on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with a simulcast running on the Star Trek channel in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. This will begin with the first two episodes on Friday, November 26.

Available for purchase in select countries

In the UK, Germany, France, Russia, South Korea and additional select countries, Season 4 will be available for purchase on participating digital platforms beginning Friday, November 26.

Many thanks for the heads up. I believe Pluto is available via the Roku streaming stick here in the UK, although I’m sure there will be numerous ways to access this channel.

This is excellent news, I’m glad they listened and corrected their mistake. Pluto is also available on Amazon Fire Stick, LG televisions and through a web browser.

Thanks Matt.

I can confirm you can also get the Android app and cast to your Stadia and Chromecast. I’m not sure what’s meant by sci-fi channel though because there isn’t one. I just assume we’ll be able to search and find it from 9pm 26/11

This suggests there is demand for Secret Hideout Trek content internationally, despite what the naysayers say. The suits got enough blowback that they knew they had a problem they needed to fix. Bad on them for causing the problem, good on them for listening to their customers, and fixing their mistake.

It still seems to me that ViacomCBS got caught in a game of chicken in its renewal negotiations with Netflix, and someone(s) at the senior level weren’t convinced of a need for an interim solution.

The audience blowback may have been necessary to unstick some high level authorizations to go with the alternative option.

It wasn’t a game of chicken. They show was produced for All Access, not Netflix. What they had with Netflix was a licensing deal to provide the show in regions where All Access wasn’t available and it would seem that they had an option to take the show back at their discretion. Viacom needs content for Paramount+ and if you’re rolling out your service where Netflix is already available you kind of need your show back otherwise people won’t subscribe.

Pluto accomplishes the same in regions where Paramount+ isn’t available since it’s still gives Viacom control of their own content.

ViacomCBS policy would have permitted a non-exclusive licence to Netflix that retained Paramount+ the right to stream as well where it exists. In fact, this negotiating position was publicly stated at investors meetings with the upcoming Discovery renewal specifically cited.

So, it clearly sounds as though negotiations for a non-exclusive licence to Netflix failed, but continued to the last minute.

In bargaining, that’s usually a sign of one side playing chicken to test if the other will cross its non-negotiable ‘red lines’.

On Netflix side,, it sounds like they were testing to see if ViacomCBS will hold to its new corporate no exclusive content licence policy.

On both sides, it seems like it was about more than just Discovery but instead ViacomCBS stance as a content producer.

I mean it was playing in 190 countries on Netflix. Even if you have a low average bare bottom, just as an example, of 10,000 Discovery fans averaged per country, multiply that by 190 you still have millions of potential upset fans. You add another zero and you have tens of millions.

That’s the thing, these Star Trek shows are playing globally on a level that’s never been done before until Netflix showed up. More people are probably watching the classic shows today than they ever did when they were in production because the access is so much bigger and easier now. I mean even when Voyager and Enterprise was on the air, there were people IN America that didn’t have access to those shows then if UPN weren’t in their area. And now just recently I was talking to someone on Reddit a few weeks ago who is a big Enterprise fan from the Philippines and started watching Trek for the first time a year ago.

Discovery got a huge benefit of being the first Trek show aired not to just majority of the world, but also to everyone at relatively the same time as well. None of the older shows ever had that advantage before and in one fell swoop both were taken away with Discovery.

it really comes down to Viacom controlling their own content. CBS needed Netflix more than Netflix needed Discovery when it launched. Now that Paramount+ is rolling out in regions where it hadn’t previously been available they need their shows back.

Discovery doesn’t pull Mandalorian numbers (or as diverse an audience across age and demos) and Paramount+ doesn’t reach nearly as many viewers worldwide but Discovery is still one of their anchor shows.

Of course I agree and I think its nothing wrong for Paramount+ to want Discovery now that they are expanding worldwide. But they could’ve gone a MUCH better way about it at the same time. I don’t pretend to know how these deals work (or the number of lawyers involved to make them happen) but this should’ve been worked out way before a few days before it was suppose to air to the world; many who has been waiting nearly a year for it.

But it does prove that Discovery is popular enough. Like you said, not the Mandalorian but at least has a solid base of followers. Netflix doesn’t seem too bothered to let it go, but it’s still Netflix. They have tons of hits, many probably way more popular than Discovery and most importantly hits that they directly own. And they still have the classic Trek shows to keep showing that’s probably more important to them, at least for now.

But Paramount+ case, they are going to need every advantage going in these new markets and Discovery is an asset. I still wonder what are they going to do about PIC and LDS on Amazon? Hopefully whatever happens, they don’t pull those shows days before their new season premieres too.

This was likely in response to blowback from the cast and producers, not fans.

As for the fix, it’s really more of a stay of execution. Once Paramount+ rolls out in the regions currently served by Pluto, the show will be pulled from Pluto.

The shift to Paramount+ was bungled but it was inevitable.

Amazing! I rarely use Pluto but I have the app. Today a notification came up on my phone with something about Star Trek but I swiped it away without reading, thinking it was recommending me some B movie with a Star Trek actor in. For those that don’t know, it’s a free ad-supported streaming service that mimics live TV by having themed “channels”. I quite like it as a concept, because I sometimes struggle deciding on something on Netflix and would much rather go by what’s on. There is also an on demand option as well. It’s on Android (with casting), iOS (I think), web browser and some smart TV platforms. It has a lot of guff, but a lot of variety, for example there is a dedicated Andromeda (not that that’s not guff) channel and a dedicated Most Haunted channel (definitely guff).

Looking forward to watching this legally! Maybe it will pave the way for more free-to-view Star Trek?

Pluto not available in Ireland unfortunately so looks like we’re going to have to wait until 2022 if we want to watch it legally. That is assuming we’ll be included in the Paramount+ launch. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was assumed we’re still part of the UK.

Yes, Ireland is one of the group of countries getting Paramount+ in 2022 https://trekmovie.com/2021/08/05/star-trek-prodigy-coming-to-paramount-in-uk-europe-as-part-of-new-deal-with-sky/

You will be able to buy each new episode on iTunes every Friday, and other similar places. So each ep should be £2.49 each in UK, so Euro conversion of that. Worth it I reckon, cost of half a sandwich :)

If it’s available via iTunes there’s usually a Season Pass all-in price which works out a little cheaper than buying per-episode, I think. That said, it is incumbent on the broadcaster to deliver the media to iTunes in a reasonable fashion – some shows are delivered day after, others are sometimes MONTHS later (Adventure Time fans know what I mean)

The only silver lining might be when Paramount+ is released in Ireland we’ll get all the S4 episodes released up to that point at once.

Discovery like my gagh is best served binged.

Wow, I’m actually pretty shocked by this decision. It’s painfully common for media giants to ignore its customer base with the arrogant (albeit most correct) assumption that there’s nothing its customers can actually do. So props for ViacomCBS recognizing not only how much they screwed up, but how large a fan base Star Trek has internationally. Obviously this decision is far from perfect since a number of countries still won’t have access to Trek until next yet (and even then, a number of countries will still be left out), but it at least shows that ViacomCBS is listening.

It wasn’t viewers they were responding to, it was the talent and the producer’s who were vocal about unhappy they were. Someone dropped the ball by not informing them of what was going on. Fan considerations were likely secondary.

Glad there is an option now. It was a very bad PR move. Glad they are fixing it…all for the fans!

TrekMovie Team, Happy Thanksgiving to you all! Grateful you keep us up-to-date with everything related to Star Trek. Also The Orville, which is great. =)

Well, if it’s the same Pluto TV we get free in the UK (such as on Fire TV), they just play a few programmes in a loop – usually old re-runs of Maury, Jerry Springer and Ghost Hunters. :-( So if this is true, it’s good news.

Well whoop-di-doo. What a favour to those of us who live in Asian countries who used to get it on Netflix. Still the square root of useless.

Multi platform streaming generally is in such a messy transitional phase at the moment. It feels mad that there is so much territorial variation when the tech is global, hopefully it will be temporary effect (until paramount+ collapses for lack of scale or whatever)

Just to put this in perspective: the way most independent filmmakers have been able to make money from the VHS era on, is to get paid by territory. As the world becomes one territory, we lose a lot of options, and a lot of potential income.

I find it rather odd how so many fans tear apart this series year after year, yet when all of sudden there may be a delay in getting the new season, they act like Santa Claus cancelled Christmas?

If Santa Clause cancels Christmas 2 days before, than fans have a reason to act that way.

Sure, but if a broad group of fans did not like Santa Claus and bitched and moaned about him year after year, would they really care? That was the point I was trying to make.

No worries, for my part I really like Discovery. This was just an observation I made that I found very ironic.

Crazy thought: the people complaining are people who like the show, not people who dislike it. I hope that clears up your confusion.

So every single fan who’s complaining about this on this and other Trek sites this week loves Discovery and haven’t been involved at all in frequently complaining about Discovery that is common on most Trek fan sites?

Really? I did not know that! Thanks! ;-)

Happy to help. I could tell you needed it.

The fans who tear the show apart didn’t care. Those who were vocal about it were fans of the show.

what a great news! it’s a gesture that could cost a lot in terms of subscriptions but will be appreciated by fans.

Not necessarily as it will only be airing free on Pluto in markets where they haven’t launched Paramount+. However, if they were to roll out this service in those territories before the end of season 4 then I think it’s reasonable to assume that the free episodes will stop and anybody wanting to see how the season ends will need to do so via Paramount+ or the digital purchase model. You never know, this strategy might actually increase subscriptions.

Ok, ok, fine. Thank you. Good to see there is still some soul in this economic body.

I wonder if they saw the numbers on the torrent trackers…

As an Australian the 50% off code is tempting

So its free on Pluto Internationally and paywalled domestically? I am reading that right?

Free on Pluto in regions where Paramount+ is not available (and a lot of regions are still shut out).

This is obviously great news. I didn’t even know Pluto was in other countries so anything helps. I actually suggested why not just put the episodes on iTunes since every other Trek show and film is sold there. And since it’s basically everywhere, at least people have the option to buy the episodes and of course Viacom still makes money.

And maybe this was all being done when they decided to take it from Netflix but highly doubtful since the press release said NOTHING about alternative viewings, just that it would arrive on Paramount+ someday. So yeah, I think just like ALL the changes Discovery itself has gotten, it’s mostly due to the backlash. At least they listened and trying to do something about it now. Sad they didn’t have a plan in place before but better late than never.

Right, Discovery is the most reinvented Star Trek series of all time. The only thing I would compare to it is TMP versus TOS, which was a huge shock at the time, both in the look and tone.

I don’t know if I agree its the MOST reinvented. I still think DS9 holds that title and was really the first Star Trek to go a radically different way than the others. Unless you just mean how much they changed the show after it started.

But I will say once they threw it in the 32nd century then yes that did make it feel a very different show in its setting than the others and a big reason I’m a much bigger fan of it today. I been wanting a Trek show to go farther in the future since Voyager and even then I was thinking maybe a century past that show at most.

Yes, I meant how they reinvent it year-to-year.

Well if we are including movies in this then I would say Star Trek 2009 def takes the cake as the most reinvented Trek of them all by a long shot. I mean it was literally reinvented considering they recast the entire TOS cast.

I am not sure if Bryan Fuller is completely responsible, but all I can say is the first few episodes of Discovery were in retrospect, pretty much a disaster. Fortunately, you are right, they have slowly changed the show significantly for the better, morphing it into a completely new show set in the next milleneum. Best of all Kurtzman gets a do-over – in a few months we will get another series set about 10 years before TOS.

I think Fuller was smart to try something new, but to kill off the Captain (who became one of my favorite characters in the 1st hour of the show) and to think insubordination and going to prison was going to somehow endear an audience to the main star of the show was a real miscalculation. Too bad we just can’t redo those first 4 or 5 episodes.

Yup, the last minute cancellation on Netflix was careless to say the least and perhaps incompetent. Good to see them trying to remedy the situation and as you said, better late than never – now only 1 week behind us in the U.S. and Canada.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Americans!

It was bungled but more likely because of blowback from the talent and producer’s, not fans.

One week for some,lol!

And Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Call me if Paramount suddenly remembers Asia.

Ya know, I’m an ex-pat living in Japan, but I’m really getting annoyed at these “International fans! Don’t worry! We’ll fix this!” just to find out what they meant was “British and Western European fans!”

Just a small part of EU fans, many are left out also in Europe.

Same. Up here in Sapporo though surprisingly not freezing. I found Pluto TV attached to Amazon Prime. Will check for Discovery tomorrow.

Any update for India ?

I’m very pleased with this decision. They seem to be doing their best now to make the show as available as possible, in some format. That’s all I would ever ask.

These are great news! I am really looking forward to the new season of Discovery! But I have to admit I would have prefered to watch it anytime and without advertisement on an ON TIME lauched P+ in Germany or on Netflix. I am deeply confused on the bad management and marketing of the distribution of Star Trek content internationaly. I am absolutly ready to pay P+ (or anybody else) money to watch any new Star Trek but I am shaking my head that they are not able to collect my money because of bad management. But thank you to all parties involved for finding this solution.

The ads yesterday werent that long and not annoying. I enjoyed it watching a Star Trek Show at the evening at a fixed time after soo many years. Feels like old times again!

Someone will have to explain how this is on Pluto in the UK. Pluto is free to air and show left over 90s TV shows like unsolved mysteries and Baywatch. How does a supposed flagship production go out for free?

Because this way they get some revenue, rather than losing it all to piracy

Pluto is owned by Viacom isn’t it?

This is obviously just a temporary measure until they can get Paramount+ up and working. As Matt said, this way they can at least collect some advertising revenue (and smooth things over a little bit with their fan base) instead of pushing people into piracy or pissing them off because they have to wait until next year.

They can also use it to encourage Pluto viewers to subscribe to Paramount+ once it launches.

“New episodes will drop at 9 pm local time”

Is it 1990 again?

Yes, Aired once and that’s it.

Here in Germany it airs 3 times. 1990 again? Hmm, feels like 2002 at 8.15pm again when Enterprise aired. I for my part like the idea that the show is watched at the same time.

I didn’t hear much good about Pluto, and nothing at all before this news dropped. Anyway I’ll probably skip season 4 and maybe Discovery altogether… Never liked the Burnham character and there’s just too little focus on some of the more interesting characters like Saru, Tilly…

As far as I can tell, in the UK it’s shown on Pluto, but only “live” – in other words, no replay option. So if you are out at 9.00pm on Fridays, you miss it. That surprises me.

Dont know if the daily schedule is the same, but here in Germany pluto offers reruns on Saturday and Sunday. And they offer the dubbed and original version on different channels. The commercial breaks weren’t annoying and as long as usual on tv.

Yes, Pluto is more like regular TV than an on-demand streaming service. But like DaveCGN said, the episodes seem to run at least three times. Sure, it’s less convenient than watching the show on Netflix whenever you like. But it’s better than nothing.

Life long admirer of ALL things star trek. But I have to say, with all of the AMAZING hairstylists they have, why can’t they come up with something better for both Adira and Tilley??? Shaved head, really?? And Tilley’s just looks like they just don’t know what they are doing!! Come on guys!!!

How to watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4 online today — Paramount Plus, Pluto and Netflix info

Will you see the real Kobayashi Maru when you watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4?

Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham in an image from Star Trek: Discovery season 4

You'll get a blast from the past when you watch Star Trek: Discovery season 4 online. The returning Paramount Plus series is starting off with a big familiar phrase: Kobayashi Maru. But we've gotten a report from a reader about another hiccup in actually finding the show, see below in the section about Australia.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4's premiere episode debuted on Nov. 18. It's entitled "Kobayashi Maru," it went live at 3 a.m. ET / 12 a.m. PT.

The season 4 premiere is titled Kobayashi Maru, and as you probably remember that is the name of Starfleet Academy's typically un-beatable test. It's also the name of the periled civilian vessel in said test, which pushes cadets to try and save a ship that (unbeknownst to them) cannot be saved. Since Star Trek: Discovery takes place before Star Trek: The Original Series, one wonders if we'll learn more about the origins of the mission.

The official description suggests that they may actually be saving the original Kobayashi Maru: "After months spent reconnecting the Federation with distant worlds, Captain Michael Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery are sent to assist a damaged space station – a seemingly routine mission that reveals the existence of a terrifying new threat."

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 is also going to explore the Covid-19 pandemic, in its own way. Specifically, through the lens of a massive anomaly ripping apart the galaxy and destroying everything in sight. This will prove a big test of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who has only recently found stability in her role commanding the crew of the USS Discovery.

While Star Trek: Discovery was one of the best Netflix shows internationally, it's leaving this week, and won't be there for the new season. Annoyingly, it's kind-of a Paramount Plus exclusive — something that will push users to piracy in one form or another (I got a reader from South Africa in my Instagram DMs today, and I was sorry for his lack of decent options). Also on Paramount Plus, you'll be able to watch South Park: Post Covid , once it debuts in the U.S. on Thanksgiving day.

Why do I say "kind-of" a Paramount Plus exclusive? Den Of Geek reports that "Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 will begin streaming on Pluto TV in the UK." The series will arrive on Nov. 26 at 9 p.m. local time.

Fortunately, Paramount Plus is on all of the best streaming devices , so no need to worry about accessing it. Unfortunately, Paramount Plus hasn't launched in wider European regions yet.

Discovery season 4 trailer

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 to air internationally on Pluto TV

  • Start dates

Star Trek franchise owners ViacomCBS have reacted to the fan outcry over Discovery ’s removal from Netflix.

In a surprising turnaround, Paramount owners ViacomCBS are providing an alternate way for non-North American fans to watch the latest season of Star Trek: Discovery ; in anticipation of the launch of their Paramount+ service, they pulled the show from Netflix just days before its fourth season premiered.

Star Trek news bonanza Discovery Season 4 first look

During the “transition”, before the international rollout of Paramount+, fans can catch up with Captain Michael Burnham via the free-to-air streamer Pluto TV.

Here’s the announcement:

To all of the International Star Trek: Discovery fans: we hear you. We love this series too. We love it for the incredible cast, the hardworking crew, the imaginative storytelling, the groundbreaking, diverse characters who bring the show to life and what it represents to so many people around the world. Star Trek has always put its fans first. We want to do the same.

They go on to list the countries where the show can be seen on Pluto TV, offering a three-month discount on Paramount + too (where available). The full details are on the Official Star Trek website .

The first two episodes of Season 4 will debut on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi Channel on Fri 26 th November at 9PM. Subsequent episodes will drop weekly at the same time after that, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

pluto tv star trek discovery season 4

If you’re not familiar with Pluto TV, it’s available here and via NOW and Roku devices in the UK. It’s also on Amazon Fire devices, iOS, Android and Samsung TV Plus.

Pluto TV is what’s termed a FAST service, that’s Free Ad-Supported Television. A Viacom acquisition in 2019, prior to the CBS merger, it’s fair to say that hosting Discovery for a season will do the streamer no harm at all. Primarily, the service runs old content over a range of linear channels – including one devoted to Baywatch! It also holds a varied back catalogue of films.

We’re fighting (and losing) the urge to be rather cynical about this announcement; against a fan backlash, this is a quick fix but hardly the natural home for a high-profile show like Discovery . Providing a linear broadcast might assuage some fans, but it’s not really a replacement for the convenience of accessing episodes on demand via Netflix.

Should you still want that flexibility, you’re welcome to pay for it of course. Season 4 is also being made available to buy via digital platforms in some countries, including the UK, Germany and France, from the 26 th November too.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 finally has a UK release date – and it's this week

UK viewers don't have to wait much longer

Star Trek Discovery season 4

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 finally has a UK release date – new episodes are arriving on British screens this week.

In the past, the first three seasons of the show premiered on Netflix for international audiences 24 hours after the episodes debuted on Paramount Plus in the US – season 4 episode 1 dropped on November 17 across the pond, which would have traditionally meant a premiere on November 18 in the UK.

However, a recent statement from the official Star Trek: Discovery Twitter account stated that season 4 would be delayed for viewers outside the US and Canada – the statement said the new season would be available internationally in 2022 as Paramount Plus expands globally. Seasons 1 to 3 are no longer available to watch on Netflix, either.

That's not the case for the UK, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland, however. Free streaming platform Pluto TV will drop new episodes at 9pm local time on its Sci-Fi channel each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, starting with the first two episodes of season 4 on November 26. Season 4 will also be available for viewers in the UK to purchase from November 26.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 sees Sonequa Martin-Green's Michael Burnham take a seat in the captain's chair as the crew of the USS Discovery faces an invisible anomaly, over 900 years after the events of Star Trek: The Original Series.

While we wait for new episodes of Star Trek: Discovery to arrive on the small screen, fill out your watch list with our picks of the best sci-fi movies of all time.

'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 4, Episode 10 provides Tarka's backstory

The set up for the season four finale continues ... very ... slowly.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" Season 4, Episode 10

As the fourth season of " Star Trek: Discovery " trudges on, it's impossible to shake the feeling that we've been here before. Not only is the basic premise of this seasonal story arc virtually identical to the last one, but when the season is considered as a whole, the primary plot is moving at about the same speed. A breadcrumb here and there and then lots of additional content padding out the rest of the plot.

At the same point last season, Episode 10 of Season 3, we'd just had "Terra Firma, Part II," the conclusion to the Mirror Universe two-parter that while thoroughly enjoyable, really offered nothing whatsoever to the ongoing plot. And here we are again, almost. (If you want to get caught up on "Discovery", check out our Star Trek: Discovery streaming guide or our overall Star Trek streaming guide for the entire franchise.)

If "Discovery" was following a series-long story arc, like "Battlestar Galactica" or "Babylon 5" or even "Deep Space Nine" and to some extent "Voyager," then it's possible, from time to time, to deviate from the path of the plot without risk of getting lost or distracted with what is, in essence, a collection of short stories.

To best enjoy "Star Trek: Discovery," you really should forget all about the nonsense concerning the dark matter anomaly and enjoy each episode as a standalone installment. Because if you wait around for anything substantial to happen regarding the main plot, you might get bored. With four seasons and 56 episodes so far, each episode costing upwards of $8 million, you'd think perhaps the people at Paramount would've nailed the formula by now. Instead, it feels like it's been written using the same template as the last season and even the season before that.

This episode opens with a conference at Federation HQ with Kovich (David Cronenberg) — arguably the most interesting character currently in this incarnation of "Star Trek" — chairing said conference with the likes of General Ndoye (Phumzile Sitole), Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr), President T'Rina of Ni'var (Tara Rosling) and others also in attendance. In front of him are communication devices from throughout "Star Trek," including one from "The Original Series," plus a Gorn communicator from "Arena" (Season 1, Episode 19) together with one from "Picard" and several others. The purpose of this coveted collection is purely to illustrate how Species 10-C might not communicate in the same way most other sentient lifeforms in our galaxy do. Plus, the early release of publicity photos from this scene was meant to send "Star Trek" fans running to their social media accounts, foaming at the mouth at the prospect of a potential series crossover.

Related: 'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 4, Episode 8: A not-awful installment

Thankfully, that's not the case and it's just a little harmless misdirection. Kovich totally steals the scene, which he has a tendency to do, and there's a reference to the "Enterprise" episode "Carbon Creek" (Season 2, Episode 2), which while divisive among many fans, remains one of this writer's favorite "Star Trek: Enterprise" episodes.

"Vulcan surveyed Earth for almost a century before making first contact," Kovich says, suggesting that observation is essential to peaceful first contact.

Kovich exists this scene in spectacular understated fashion, hinting he has more disasters to deal with

In the "Enterprise" episode, Sub-Cmdr. T'Pol entertains Capt. Archer and Cmdr. Tucker with a tale of how in 1957 a Vulcan survey ship crashed on Earth, near a small mining town called Carbon Creek, Pennsylvania, 106 years before first contact in Bozeman, Montana in 2063.

Following the meeting, President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) informs Vance that she was handing power to her deputy (we don't know who that is yet) since she believes her background as a politician and an ambassador will prove useful in Discovery's upcoming mission. T'Rina also unexpectedly joins the mission, much to Saru's delight, but bridge crewmember Lt. Bryce (Ronnie Rowe) elects to stay behind; perhaps there's limited space on Discovery.

Related: 'Star Trek: Discovery' Episode 7 sets up a mid-season cliffhanger

Discovery's mission is to fly through the Galactic Barrier and attempt first contact. Ah, the Galactic Barrier. In the "Star Trek" universe, this was an energy field composed of negative energy surrounding the rim of the Milky Way galaxy. It's invisible to both the naked eye and visual recording equipment at a distance.

According to Memory Alpha , the first encounter occurred in 2065 with the SS Valiant, but unfortunately, the ship was swept into the barrier, ultimately resulting in the destruction of the ship and the loss of all hands. Then, in 2265, the USS Enterprise discovered the disaster recorder ejected from the Valiant. Decoding its message, they retraced the Valiant's path, being almost destroyed in the process in "The Original Series" episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (Season 1, Episode 1) that was actually the second pilot.

Lt. Bryce, we hardly knew you. His full name was Ronald Altman Bryce, according to Memory Alpha

It was subsequently referenced in two more TOS episodes, "By Any Other Name" (Season 2, Episode 21) and "Is There in Truth No Beauty?" (Season 3, Episode 7) and it's determined to be mostly made up of "negative energy."

This shouldn't be confused with "the Great Barrier" at the center of the galaxy, which made its most well-known appearance in "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier." However, since 1989, we've learned that a black hole one million times the mass of the sun, called Sagittarius A* (pronounced "Sagittarius A star") is in fact at the center of the Milky Way.

Related:   'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 4, Episode 6 keeps the tempo up

Similarly, nothing like what we're shown exists at the edge of our galaxy. Instead of giant "space cells" floating about or anything remotely like that, the edge of the galaxy is a bit fuzzy, similar in principle to the edge of the Ort Cloud that marks the boundary of our solar system. As the boundary is crossed and the gravitational influence of the last heavenly body is left behind, there is basically nothing but noble gases, carbon compounds and lots of big, black empty space.

No, OK, we don't know for sure . No, OK, no one has been out there, but all science points to this conclusion and it's clear that the writers on "Discovery" have incorporated a throwback to "The Original Series" and that's fun. But it feels like it jars against all the efforts made in previous episodes and other seasons to keep the science at least reasonably accurate, promoting STEM and stimulating young minds and all that. Yes, there's still plenty of room for science fiction (transporter technology, mushroom-powered propulsion and so on) but this one isn't a result of future technology, it's been this way for very roughly 13.61 billion years.

In order to survive traveling through this fictional fortification, both Book's ship and the USS Discovery must upgrade their shields to incorporate programmable antimatter . For the NCC-1031-A that's pretty straightforward since they can utilize Starfleet resources, but for Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) and Book (David Ajala) it presents a little bit more of a problem. They must travel to an unnamed planet where Tarka is certain there is more than enough hidden away in a secret stash.

Upon landing, Book freaks out as he sees a giant antenna-like structure that he recognizes as part of an Emerald Chain work camp. Interestingly, we first saw these in last season's episode " Scavengers " (Season 3, Episode 6), so that's nice continuity from the writers. And so Tarka explains his backstory and motivation to secure the dark matter anomaly's power source.

There's a nice continuity callback to the planet Hunhau from the third season episode "Scavengers"

We learn through flashbacks that while he himself was a prisoner in an Emerald Chain facility — the very one they are approaching — Tarka gradually became very dear friends with an alien scientist also held captive there named Oros (Osric Chau). Turns out that Oros is a brilliant scientist and before being thrown in with a cellmate, Tarka had spent a very long time in solitary confinement, which explains his less-than-perfect social skills. Meanwhile, Oros explains to Tarka that he's been working on an interdimensional transporter.

Their relationship is nice to watch as it develops and the dialogue is good. All in all, it's a nice feature in this episode, even if it doesn't advance the plot very far. In the second string story, Discovery must navigate through the Galactic Barrier to reach the space where species 10-C is believed to exist. This involves a series of maneuvers through a giant sea of bubbles, or "spacial cells" caused by vacuum-state fluctuations. However, even Discovery's reinforced shields can't withstand the negative energy concentrations and gamma ray radiation for long, so time spent outside one of these "spacial cells" must be kept to an absolute minimum.

Related:   'Star Trek: Discovery' Episode 4 ends with a surprise you didn't expect

In order to introduce a new ticking clock to the plot, it's revealed that Vance has sent an encrypted message to the Discovery. We already knew that the anomaly had sped up its boronite harvesting and was due to move soon, and indeed it has ... but it has reappeared in the Alpha Quadrant, and based on their projections, gravitational waves will begin impacting Ni'Var and Earth within the next 71 hours. Uh oh.

Tarka's backstory features a great character called Oros and hopefully we'll see him again in the finale

Tarka reveals that he had told Osyraa about the interdimensional transporter in exchange for his freedom and long before he had really go to know Oros. At this point in the flashback, we see guards coming for both of them, but Tarka is able to overpower them. He's understandably remorseful about having betrayed the alien who is now his best friend, but during the struggle Oros has been badly injured. He insists Tarka leave before more guards arrive and that they will meet in Kayalise together, which means "home" in his language; a place beyond suffering, a place without the Emerald Chain and a place he has been searching for — and his calculations had proved it was real.

We hear about how it took Tarka several days before he was able to safely return to the compound after having escaped, in an attempt to rescue Oros. While he was hiding, there was a massive power surge in the camp and he witnessed ships leaving in droves, but his friend was long since gone, and the laboratory — in fact, the entire complex — was deserted. However, he found their symbol for Kayalise, the symbol for the golden ratio etched into a wall. He believes Oros made it to their new home and he continued to return to the ruins of the compound every year, hoping to find another sign. Of course, he eventually built his own transporter, but he could not find the power source until the dark matter anomaly showed up.

Related: 'Star Trek: Discovery' Episode 3 is stuffed full of subplots and side stories

They grab the hidden antimatter, which had been stashed there by Tarka many years ago to power his own interdimensional transporter and embark on their own journey through the Galactic Barrier and on into unknown territory. Meanwhile, the Discovery is just one step ahead and has cleared the Barrier and is warping on to initiate first contact with species 10-C.

The symbol for Kayalise. Did Oros make it to the other dimension and return to give Tarka a sign?

There are just three episodes left now and we're pretty much expecting Book and Burnham to join forces somehow, and Tarka will possibly get to use his interdimensional transporter — or maybe die trying, a bit like Dr. Tolian Soran in "Star Trek: Generations." But if there's a species 10-C reveal even half as lame as last season's Su'Kal moment, we're going to be very disappointed indeed.

Rating: 7½ /10

Share All sharing options for: Star Trek: Discovery is finally free to do whatever it wants

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that even among the greatest television shows in Star Trek history, most of them take two seasons to stop being kind of bad. Never has that been more true or more excruciating than in the case of Star Trek: Discovery .

pluto tv star trek discovery season 4

Polygon is looking ahead to the movies, shows, and books coming soon in our Spring 2024 entertainment preview package, a weeklong special issue.

Often it felt like what Discovery was really doing in its early seasons was discovering what didn’t work. Strong performances from a great cast? That works. A Klingon design that absolutely nobody liked ? Definitely not. But despite the stumbles, Discovery season 1 had still averaged C’s and B’s with reviewers, and had built an audience and a subscriber base for Paramount Plus. On the strength of Disco ’s first season, Paramount greenlit Star Treks Picard , Lower Decks , and Prodigy , three new shows covering a huge range of ages and nostalgic tastes. And spinning out of Disco ’s second season, which introduced familiar , nostalgic characters and a brighter, more Star Trek-y tone, Paramount produced Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , inarguably the best new addition to the franchise since 1996.

Star Trek: Discovery crawled so that the rest of modern Trek could run... and then it started to walk. The show’s third season saw the USS Discovery and crew in the place that should have been their starting blocks: the bleeding future edge of Star Trek’s timeline. Thanks to season 3’s groundwork, season 4 became the first time that Discovery had a status quo worth returning to. In its fifth and final season, Star Trek: Discovery is finally free — free in a way that a Star Trek TV series hasn’t been in 23 years.

Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery, season 5. Wearing a glowing uniformed spacesuit, she clings to the back of a spaceship speeding through hyperspace, colorful lights streaking the background.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is such an elder statesman of the television elite that it’s easy to forget that it was daring. The show’s triumph wasn’t just that it featured a new cast of characters, but also its audaciousness in imagining the future of the future — and making that future unmistakably different . The Original Series showed a racial and national cooperation that seemed fantastical in its time, with an alien crewmember to denote the next frontier of embracing the other . Next Generation saw that bet and raised it, installing a member of the Klingon species, the Federation’s once-feared imperialist rival state, as a respected officer on the bridge of Starfleet’s flagship.

Next Generation ’s time period — one century after Kirk’s Enterprise — wasn’t a nominal choice, but a commitment to moving the story of Star Trek forward. From the show’s foundations, Gene Roddenberry and his collaborators, new and old, set a precedent that the Federation would evolve. Therefore, in accordance with the utopian themes of the franchise, old enemies would in time become friends. Next Generation embraced The Original Series ’ nemeses and the rest of ’90s Trek saw that bet and raised it again, pulling many of Next Gen ’s villains into the heroic fold. Voyager welcomed a Borg crewmember and disincorporated the Borg empire; Deep Space Nine gave the franchise the first Ferengi Starfleet cadet, and brokered a Federation-Klingon-Romulan alliance in the face of an existential threat.

But Discovery — at least until it made its Olympic long-jump leap 900 years into the future — couldn’t move Star Trek forward. So long as it was set “immediately before Kirk’s Enterprise,” hemmed in by the constraints of a previously established era of Star Trek history, it could graft on new elements (like Spock’s secret human foster sister) but it couldn’t create from whole cloth (like a galaxy-wide shortage of starship fuel that nearly destroyed the Federation). Like its predecessor, the ill-fated Star Trek: Enterprise of the ’00s, it was doomed to hang like a remora on the side of the events of The Original Series , or, if you’ll pardon another fish metaphor, doomed like a goldfish that can only grow as large as its half-gallon fishbowl will allow.

Discovery ’s later, free seasons in the 32nd century have shown the Federation at its most vulnerable, a subtler echo of Picard ’s own season 1 swing at fallen institutions . (Fans of Voyager and Deep Space Nine know that this is an extremely rich vein of Trek storytelling.) In its third season, Discovery solved a galaxy-wide fuel crisis that had shattered the community of the Federation. In its fourth it fought for a fragile new Federation alliance and its millennia-old ideals.

And those seasons have also boldly committed to the idea of imagining the future’s future — 900 years of it. The centuries-old rift between Vulcans and Romulans is long healed, Ferengi serve as captains in Starfleet, the work of Doctor Noonien Soong has brought new medical technologies to the fore.

Even still, Discovery hasn’t been truly free in its third and fourth seasons. Star Trek: Picard was out there, forming new past elements of a post- Next Gen / Voy / DS9 era that Discovery had to abide by. And, after all, the show still had to make sure there was something for its own next season to come back to.

Blu del Barrio as Adira in Star Trek: Discovery. She kneels confused before a strange figure dressed in white with white hair, with red robed figures in the background.

But now — with Prodigy and Picard finished, and Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks locked into their settings of Star Trek’s established past, and Starfleet Academy and Section 31 not yet in production at the time that its final season would have been written — Discovery has reached the final final frontier for a Star Trek show. If you’re a Star Trek fan, that should excite you.

Not since Deep Space Nine in 1999 and Voyager in 2001 has a Star Trek series had the freedom to wrap up its run with the Federation in any state it wants to. With franchise flagship Next Generation at an end, and Voyager restricted to the Delta Quadrant only, Deep Space Nine used its last seasons to throw the Federation into all-out war, making sweeping changes to the established ficto-political norms of ’90s Trek. Voyager used its finale to do what Captain Picard never could: defang the Borg (mostly).

We don’t know exactly what Discovery will do with that freedom. Season 4 directors have talked about reaching “ into the past to get further into the future ,” and likened it to Indiana Jones. Official news releases have said the crew will “uncover a mystery that sends them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries.” But speculating on what that means would be beside the point.

Discovery , the show about an intergalactically teleporting starship, can finally, actually, go anywhere. It’s been almost a quarter of a century since a beloved Star Trek series was so free to boldly go. Let’s hope they’re very bold indeed.

April 2024 TV Guide: 56 shows on TV and streaming this month

I get so excited when a new month is near because that means a bunch of shows are either premiering or returning. And believe me, April 2024 is jam-packed with many fan-favorites! I'm going to have to clear up so much time on my calendar.

March brought with it many great additions , and this month will keep you fellow TV fans busy with the return of series' like Walker season 4 ; The Big Door Prize season 2; Star Trek: Discovery season 5 (aka the final season), and When Calls the Heart season 11 , as well as debuts of productions including Water Under the Bridge and The Veil on Hulu .

Below we highlighted some of the biggest returns and highly-anticipated premieres to be on the lookout for. And be sure to keep scrolling all the way down to see the full list of what's to come in April further below!

All American season 6

One of the shows we're most looking forward to is definitely All American season 6 on The CW. And thankfully, it's coming at the very beginning of the month on Monday, April 1 at 8 p.m. ET. When the sports drama returns, it will have been almost a year since we got new episodes of the series. This is due to delays from the writers and actors strikes. But, now we're back on track!

The main cast is all returning except for Taye Diggs as Coach Baker who died in season 5. The familiar faces you'll see back on your screens are Daniel Ezra as Spencer, Samantha Logan as Olivia, Michael Evans Behling as Jordan, Greta Onieogou as Layla, Bre-Z as Tamia "Coop" Cooper, Cody Christian as Asher, Karimah Westbrook as Grace, Monet Mazur as Laura. Chelsea Tavares as Patience, Hunter Clowdus as JJ Parker, Jalyn Hall as Dillon, and Kareem J. Grimes as Preach.

Season 6 episode 1, "Things Done changed," will start off at the beginning of a new school year with Spencer and Jordan "officially eligible to enter the NFL draft," per the synopsis. Because of this, Spencer is at the center of the "media spotlight." Olivia comes back to L.A. after "being changed by her time" in London, while Layla works on opening up her new lounge where Patience will perform for the first time "since being stabbed." Finally, Asher and Jaymee are living the parent life with their new baby AJ.

Vanderpump Villa

Reality series Vanderpump Rules is a popular one amongst fans, especially following Scandoval. Now, the franchise is growing with a spin-off - Vanderpump Villa . The new series premieres Monday, April 1 on Hulu. There will be a total of 10 episodes. The first three will be released on premiere day, followed by one new installment weekly until the finale on May 20.

The series of course sees Lisa Vanderpump at the helm, and takes place at her French villa: Chateau Rosabelle. We'll be following the staff as they try to provide "luxurious, once-in-a-lifetime experiences" for guests, while also facing rivalries, romances, and "raucous misadventures," per the synopsis. Get ready for all sorts of drama! Vanderpump always knows how to bring it.

If you're a fan of crime thrillers and the iconic The Talented Mr. Ripley novel by author Patricia Highsmith, then you'll definitely want to tune in to new Netflix series Ripley on Thursday, April 4 . The eight-episode series stars Andrew Scott in the titular role; Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood; and Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf.

Tom Ripley is a grifter "scraping by in early 1960s New York," per the synopsis. When he's hired by a wealthy many to go to Italy to try to get his "vagabond son" to come back home, this leads to Tom's first step into "a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder." There's a total of five books, so plenty of material to work from! The Tom Ripley franchise is a popular one, and I have no doubt Netflix's take on it will be just as good as well.

Mary & George

I think the series I'm most looking forward to on the April list is definitely Mary & George ! I love historical dramas, and this one just sounds so complex, dramatic, and spicy. All ingredients for the perfect series I'd say! The drama premieres Friday, April 5 on Starz.

There's a total of seven episodes, with Julianne Moore taking on the role of Mary Villiers and Nicholas Galitzine as her son George. The television production also stars Tony Curran as King James I, Laurie Davidson as Robert Carr, and Trine Dyrholm as Queen Anne. Check out the synopsis and trailer below:

Mary & George is inspired by the unbelievable true story of Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore), who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George (Nicholas Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) and become his all-powerful lover. Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors. And with England’s place on the world stage under threat from outside forces and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher. Prepared to stop at nothing and armed with her ruthless political steel, Mary married her way up the ranks, bribed politicians, colluded with criminals and clawed her way into the heart of the Establishment, making it her own. Mary & George is a dangerously daring historical psychodrama about an outrageous mother and son who schemed, seduced and killed to conquer the court of England and the bed of King James I.
