Burj Khalifa

Highlight: The world's tallest building and Dubai's best panoramic city views

Dubai's landmark building and major tourist attraction is the Burj Khalifa , which at 829.8 meters is the tallest building in the world and the most famous of the city's points of interest.

For most visitors, a trip to the observation deck on the 124th floor here is a must-do while in the city. The views across the city skyline from this bird's-eye perspective are simply staggering.

The slick observation deck experience includes a multimedia presentation on both Dubai and the building of the Burj Khalifa (completed in 2010) before a high-speed elevator whizzes you up to the observation deck for those 360-degree views out across the skyscrapers to the desert on one side and the ocean on the other.

Enjoying the view from the Burj Khalifa

Nighttime visits are particularly popular with photographers due to Dubai's famous city-lights panoramas.

Buy your Burj Khalifa "At the Top" Entrance Ticket in advance to avoid long line-ups, especially if you are planning to visit on a weekend.

Dubai fountain

Highlight: A family-friendly evening entertainment spectacle

Wrapping around the Burj Khalifa are the gardens of Burj Park, with walkways dotted with modern art sculptures. Burj Park is where you come to see the Dubai Fountain display on Burj Lake.

Modeled on the famous Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas, this is the world's tallest performing fountain, with water displays shooting up to 150 meters high into the air.

The 30-minute-long displays take place regularly after dark, and although the display itself is free, there are entrance charges to access the add-on experiences.

The floating platform of the Dubai Fountain Boardwalk is one of the most popular experiences for close-up views, while there are also opportunities to take an abra (traditional wooden boat) onto Burj Lake to see the fountains from the water.

Dubai Mall

Highlights: Dubai Aquarium, plenty of family activities, dining options, and brand-name shopping

Dubai Mall is the city's premier mall and one of the city's best places to visit for a day of shopping and indoor activities to keep the kids busy. It provides entry to the Burj Khalifa as well as the Dubai Aquarium.

There is also an ice-skating rink, gaming zone, and cinema complex if you're looking for more entertainment options.

The shopping and eating are endless, and there are nearly always special events such as live music and fashion shows within the mall. The most famous of these are the annual Dubai Shopping Festival in January and February and the Dubai Summer Surprises Festival in July and August.

Dubai Aquarium

Highlights: An awe-inspiring introduction to the underwater world

One of the city's top tourist attractions, the Dubai Aquarium houses 140 species of sea life in the huge suspended tank on the ground floor of the Dubai Mall.

Although there is free viewing from the mall, the highlight of a visit here is entering the Underwater Zoo, with its three-story high, 270-degree views along the length of the glass-panel tunnels.

As well as viewing the vast amount of marine life, the Dubai Aquarium offers plenty of aquatic experiences and things to do for visitors who want a close-up encounter with some of the aquarium's inhabitants, from hand-feeding eagle rays to diving with reef and tiger sharks.

Aquaventure Waterpark

Highlight: Water-based theme park fun for a day devoted to family entertainment

Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark , based at Atlantis, The Palm on the Palm Jumeirah—Dubai's famous man-made island development—is a great place to cool off after a few days of hectic shopping and sightseeing.

The waterslide action here is excellent and world-class, with the Aquaconda, the world's longest water slide; a nine-story-tall slide, aptly named the Leap of Faith; and water coaster rides.

There's also underwater safaris using Sea TREK helmets; a dedicated water play area for smaller children with slides; and for when all your energy has been used up, a 700-meter sweep of white-sand beach.

Address: Crescent Road, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai

Off-roading in the Dubai desert

Highlight: See the UAE's dramatic interior of sweeping dunes on Dubai's best day trip option

You don't have to travel far from Dubai's coastal skyline of skyscrapers to reach some of the UAE's desertscapes of rippling dunes.

Both the dune fields and desert of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and the orange-hued dunes of Maleha (actually in the Emirate of Sharjah ) are within day-tripping distance of the city.

Desert adventure tours can combine a range of activities, from sandboarding, camel rides, and 4WD safaris to traditional Arabian falconry displays and desert dinners under the stars. There are also options for overnight camping under the stars.

The typical tour itinerary, giving visitors a taster of desert life, is easily slotted into even a short trip to Dubai, taking around six hours door to door, with a mid-afternoon departure from the city.

The Dubai Desert 4x4 Safari offers a half-day desert adventure and includes a camel ride, sandboarding lessons, a sunset barbecue, and a belly dancing show.

For a less rushed tour experience, choose one of the companies that operate inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, where trips can include wildlife drives to spot the reserve's free-roaming herds of gazelles and, if you're lucky, Arabian oryx.

Burj al-Arab

Highlights: Treat yourself to one of Dubai's most famous dining experiences

The Burj Al-Arab is the world's tallest hotel, standing 321 meters high on its own artificial island on the Dubai coastline.

Designed to resemble a billowing dhow sail, the exterior of the building is lit up by a choreographed, colored lighting show at night.

Decadent in every way possible, the Burj Al-Arab is one of the most expensive hotels in the world, with the most luxurious suites costing more than $15,000 for one night.

For those without unlimited credit, the way to experience the over-the-top opulence is to book afternoon tea at Sahn Eddar (a minimum spend is required) in the soaring atrium lounge.

Non-guests can also book dinner at the Ristorante L'Olivo at Al-Mahara where floor-to-ceiling glass panels in the dining room walls allow you to view sea life while you eat, or you can enjoy French and Italian classics for lunch or dinner with city vistas at the Michelin starred Al Muntaha .

Address: Jumeirah Road, Dubai

Mall of the Emirates

Highlight: Cool off from the desert heat with some winter sports then shop till you drop in the mall

Mall of the Emirates is one of the city's most famous malls, with the spectacular (and surreal) Ski Dubai facility inside.

The indoor ski slope is complete with chairlifts and a penguin enclosure, all at a continuous temperature of -4 degrees Celsius.

There's also a cinema complex and a family entertainment center with a whole host of rides aimed at both the big and small.

The shopping opportunities are boundless, as are the eating options, offering every conceivable world cuisine.

Address: Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai

Abra ride on Dubai Creek

Highlight: Abra rides across the creek for city skyline views

Dubai Creek separates the city into two towns, with Deira to the north and Bur Dubai to the south.

The creek has been an influential element in the city's growth, first attracting settlers here to fish and pearl dive. Small villages grew up alongside the creek as far back as 4,000 years ago, while the modern era began in the 1830s when the Bani Yas tribe settled in the area.

The creek is where you come to capture city views from the water, either by taking a trip on one of the many dhows that have been restored as tourist cruise boats or by hopping on an abra (small wooden ferry) between the ferry points on the creek's Bur Dubai and Deira banks.

On the Bur Dubai side of the creek, rubbing up against the Bastakia neighborhood, the waterfront has been regenerated as the Al Seef district, with a waterfront promenade backed by traditional coral-block and limestone buildings, a floating market, and shops selling crafts. It's a great place for a stroll with excellent water views.

Farther southeast down the creek, on the Deira bank just north of Al-Maktoum Bridge, is the Dhow Wharfage. It's still used by small traders from across the Gulf who sail their dhows onward to Kuwait, Iran, Oman, India, and down to Africa's horn.

This tiny remnant of Dubai's traditional economy is a fascinating place to wander around and watch cargo being loaded and unloaded on and off the dhows.

At the southeastern end of Dubai Creek, just before the creek joins with Dubai Canal, is the newly developed Dubai Creek Harbor with a waterfront marina walkway, which offers excellent vistas of the city skyline.

Beautiful flowers blooming at the Dubai Miracle Garden

Highlight: Colorful photography options amid Dubai's most creative gardens

This is the zaniest garden ever. Not content with constructing the world's largest buildings and malls, Dubai has created the world's largest flower garden. Dubai Miracle Garden spans 2,000 square meters and is home to a reputed 100 million flowers.

Everything that can be covered with flowers has been, from twee English-style cottages to windmills and trucks. There's even a flower version of the Burj Khalifa.

Stroll the walkways and enjoy the riot of color and the wacky flower displays.

Address: Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Rd, Al Barsha

Bastakia (Old Dubai)

Highlight: Admire Dubai's vernacular Gulf architecture amid the lanes of the tiny old town quarter

The Al Fahidi Quarter (previously known, and sometimes still referred to as the Bastakia neighborhood) was built in the late 19th century to be the home of wealthy Persian merchants who dealt mainly in pearls and textiles and were lured to Dubai because of the tax-free trading and access to Dubai Creek.

Al Fahidi occupies the eastern portion of Bur Dubai along the creek, and the coral and limestone buildings here, many with walls topped with wind-towers, have been excellently preserved.

Wind-towers provided the homes here with an early form of air conditioning—the wind trapped in the towers was funneled down into the houses. Persian merchants likely transplanted this architectural element (common in Iranian coastal houses) from their home country to the Gulf.

Lined with distinct Arabian architecture, the narrow lanes are highly evocative of a bygone, and much slower, age in Dubai's history.

Inside the district, you'll find the Majlis Gallery , with its collection of traditional Arab ceramics and furniture (housed in a wind-tower), and the Al Serkal Cultural Foundation with a shop, café, and rotating art exhibitions (located in one of the historic buildings).

Global Village at night

Highlight: Evening entertainment hub with a global cultural focus

From October through April, this entertainment park provides family-friendly entertainment themed around taking visitors on a journey around the world.

Global Village's 26 country pavilions, ranging from Iraq to Japan and Russia to South Korea, each offer an individual experience of that country's culture, entertainment, and heritage. It's a unique option in the city for evening entertainment for families with little ones in tow.

As well as the pavilions, there are plentiful dining and shopping options on-site. Younger members of the family will enjoy the fun-fair-style Carnaval with plenty of rides, such as bumper cars, carousels, Swiss swings, and a big wheel, along with faster rides and a roller coaster.

Address: Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road, Dubai

Abra in Madinat Jumeirah

Highlight: Scenic canal cruises on traditional abra boats for easygoing sightseeing

The development complex of Madinat Jumeirah is a dining and retail district with a couple of five-star hotels, all set along the palm-tree-fringed banks of an artificial canal network.

All of Madinat Jumeirah has been styled to mimic traditional Gulf architecture, with wind towers and mashrabiya detailing.

Souk Madinat Jumeirah here offers easygoing shopping, with a large variety of traditional craftwork and souvenirs from the Gulf and across the wider Middle East, but the main reason to head here is to hop on an abra (small wooden ferry) and cruise down the canal.

Abras leave regularly from Souk Madinat Jumeirah's promenade and loop around the waterway, providing plenty of photo opportunities of the lush gardens and traditional architecture of Madinat Jumeirah, with the tall swooping sail of the Burj Al Arab in the background.

Address: King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, Dubai

Aerial view of Jumeirah Beach Residence beach

Highlight: Dubai beach life summed up with everything you need at your fingertips

This long, wide strip of sandy white bliss is the number one beach destination for Dubai visitors .

Some of Dubai's most popular beach resorts are strung out all along its length, making this one of the most popular places to stay for visitors who want to make hitting the beach a major part of their Dubai stay.

The large areas of the beach have excellent facilities, with plenty of sun loungers, restaurants, lifeguards patrolling the stretches designated for swimming, and water sports operators offering jet skiing, kayak rental, parasailing, and boat rides.

This is a safe beach choice for families traveling with tots, as the turquoise water of the Gulf lapping the shore is shallow and calm.

Address: Dubai Marina, Dubai

Dubai Museum

Highlight: Delve behind the high-rise facade to discover Dubai's heritage

Dubai's excellent museum is housed in the Al-Fahidi Fort, built in 1787 to defend Dubai Creek. The fort's walls are built out of traditional coral blocks and held together with lime. The upper floor is supported by wooden poles, and the ceiling is constructed from palm fronds, mud, and plaster.

In its history, the fort has served as a residence for the ruling family, a seat of government, garrison, and prison. Restored in 1971 (and again extensively in 1995), it is now the city's premier museum.

The entrance has a fascinating exhibition of old maps of the Emirates and Dubai, showing the mammoth expansion that hit the region after the oil boom. The courtyard is home to several traditional boats and a palm-leaf house with an Emirati wind-tower. The right-hand hall features weaponry, and the left-hand hall showcases Emirati musical instruments.

Below the ground floor are display halls with exhibits and dioramas covering various aspects of traditional Emirati life (including pearl fishing and Bedouin desert life), as well as artifacts from the 3,000- to 4,000-year-old graves at Al Qusais archaeological site.

Sitting slap-bang between Dubai's older neighborhoods clustered around the creek and the city's modern sprawl, this ginormous 150-meter-high picture frame is one of Dubai's latest sights.

Inside Dubai Frame , a series of galleries whisk you through the city's history and explore Emirati heritage before you travel up to the Sky Deck, where there are fantastic panoramas of both old and new Dubai to be snapped on the viewing platforms.

Afterwards check out Future Dubai gallery, which imagines what a futuristic vision of the city will look like.

La Mer Beach

Highlight: Take a day off sightseeing and head to the white sand for a relaxed break beside the sea

Backed by a fringe of palm trees, the stretch of La Mer Beach in Jumeirah is an easygoing spot for a full day of sun and sea.

Water sports operators here offer Jet Ski trips, boating, fly-boarding, and kayaking for beachgoers who itch to get off the sand, but for those who simply want to sloth out between swimming, there's plenty of sun lounger rental and a wide variety of cafés and restaurants just a hop from the sand for snacking and full meals.

La Mer is a sheltered bay with tranquil water, so it's a safe choice for both families and less-confident swimmers. Like all of Dubai's main beaches, it is regularly patrolled by lifeguards during the day.

If the sea and sand aren't enough, at the beach's northeast point, you'll find Laguna Waterpark, with several waterslides, a lazy river, and a surf pool.

Address: Jumeirah Road, Jumeirah

Jumeirah Mosque

Highlight: Gain greater insights into Islam on a tour of Dubai's most famous mosque

Jumeirah Mosque is considered by many to be the most beautiful of Dubai's mosques. An exact copy of Cairo's Al-Azhar Mosque, which is eight times its size, the Jumeirah Mosque is a fine example of Islamic architecture.

This stone structure is built in the medieval Fatimid tradition, with two minarets that display the subtle details in the stonework. It is particularly attractive in the evening when lit with floodlights.

The Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Cultural Understanding (which also runs a program of tours, lectures, Arabic classes, and cultural meals) organizes guided tours of the mosque designed to try to foster a better understanding of the Muslim faith.

Tours begin at 10am daily, except Fridays.

Address: Jumeirah Road

Kite Beach

Highlight: Learn to kitesurf on one of Dubai's best water sports beaches

Thanks to its surf and prevailing wind, the northern section of Umm Suqeim Beach is Dubai's top spot for kitesurfing.

The beach is home to an array of water sports operators offering equipment hire, as well as kitesurfing lessons, along with paddleboarding and kayak rental.

This long stretch of yellow-sand beach sweeps south along the coast (becoming Umm Suqeim Beach), with plenty of space for sunbathers looking to lap up a lazy day of swimming and soaking up the rays on the sand and excellent facilities and dining choices. There are good views of the Burj Al Arab from the southern end of the beach.

While in the Jumeirah area, it's well worth brushing off the sand for an hour to visit the Majlis Ghorfat Um Al-Sheef just a three-kilometer hop from the beach. Built in 1955, this was the summer residence of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed al-Maktoum.

The residence, made out of gypsum and coral block, has been restored and maintains much of the original beautiful decor, giving you a better understanding of the opulent lifestyle of Dubai's rulers.

The Majlis Gardens feature a reproduction of an impressive Arab irrigation system, and many shady date palms.

This wide, eight-lane highway is rimmed with towering glass, chrome, and steel high-rises along its entire length. It's one of the best on-the-ground vantage points for Dubai's famed skyscraper views.

Main attractions are along, or just off, the strip between the roundabout and the first intersection, and most of Dubai's famous malls are located along the road's route.

The Dubai World Trade Tower has an observation deck on its top floor, which offers visitors panoramic views (a cheaper option than the Burj Khalifa), and the Gold and Diamond Park (Sheikh Zayed Road) is a one-stop shop for jewelry lovers, with 118 manufacturers and 30 retailers all under one roof.

Deira

Highlight: Shop the traditional way amid the heritage souks of Deira

Deira lies on the northern bank of Dubai Creek and the winding streets here unveil the melting pot of different nationalities that have come to call Dubai home. On the shore, ancient dhows load and unload with modern banks, hotels, and office buildings as a backdrop.

For travelers, Deira is most famous for its traditional souks (markets), which bustle with shoppers at all times of the day.

Deira Gold Souk is world-renowned as the largest gold bazaar in the world.

The Deira Spice Souk sells every imaginable spice, with stalls overflowing with bags of frankincense, cumin, paprika, saffron, sumac, and thyme, as well as the fragrant oud wood, rose water, and incense.

The fish market provides a much less touristy experience.

While in the district, culture lovers shouldn't miss two of Deira's finely restored architectural gems. Heritage House was built in 1890 as the home of a wealthy Iranian merchant and later became the home of Sheik Ahmed bin Dalmouk (a famous pearl merchant in Dubai). Today, it's a great chance to see the interior of a traditional family home.

The Al-Ahmadiya School, constructed in 1912, is the oldest school in Dubai and is now a museum of public education.

Dubai skydiving

Highlight: Get the best aerial views of the city with Dubai's best thrill-seeker activity

For the ultimate sightseeing adrenaline rush while you're in the city, tandem-skydive over Dubai from Skydive Dubai's Palm Drop Zone.

There are bird's-eye views of the city's skyscraper coastline, Dubai Marina, and the artificial islands of Palm Jumeirah, all the way down the 3,900-meter-high plunge.

The entire experience takes around 90 minutes and includes the flight; an instructor you'll be harnessed to during the skydive; and a skydiving camera operator, who'll take pictures during your dive.

If you prefer desert dune scenery, Skydive Dubai also operates a separate tandem-skydiving experience in the desert, about 35 kilometers out of the city.

Skydiving in Dubai is an activity you need to book as far in advance as possible due to limited numbers and the high popularity of the experience.

Dubai Opera

Highlight: Enjoy the best of Dubai's cultural life while on your trip

For nighttime attractions, look no further. Opened in mid-2016, Dubai's classy new opera building is the centerpiece of the waterfront district in downtown Dubai and is a major cultural hub and main entertainment venue.

The Dubai Opera hosts a year-round program of famous musical theater productions, concerts by world-class musicians, opera, ballet, and classical music, as well as smaller productions, comedy nights, and concerts.

The 2,000-seat theater building itself is an astonishing piece of architectural mastery and one of Dubai's new landmarks, with its highly-contemporary glass and steel walls jutting out over the waterfront, built to resemble the curves of a traditional dhow.

Dubai Butterfly Garden

Highlight: Take a nature break without leaving the city

It's a great chance for kids to get close-up views of butterflies as they often land on visitors' shoulders and hands.

There's a museum here, too, with plenty of information on butterfly varieties, their habitats, and life cycle.

Local music and dance are performed from October to April, and visitors can get advice from practitioners of traditional medicine.

An important stop-off on the migration routes, it's a prime place to spot flamingos in winter when massive flocks of these majestic pink birds wade through the lagoons, backdropped by soaring high-rises.

Various hides in prime spots have been set up within the park to allow bird watchers good views of the birdlife.

Sheikh Saeed Al-Maktoum House

Highlight: Delve into Dubai's history amid the museums of this royal complex

Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum was the Ruler of Dubai from 1921 to 1958 and grandfather to the current ruler. His former residence has been rebuilt and restored as a museum that is a fine example of Arabian architecture.

The original house was built in 1896 by Sheikh Saeed's father, so he could observe shipping activity from the balconies.

It was demolished, but the current house was rebuilt next to the original site, staying true to the original model by incorporating carved teak doors, wooden lattice screens across the windows, and gypsum ventilation screens with floral and geometric designs.

Thirty rooms are built around a central courtyard with wind-tower details on top.

Inside are the exhibits of the Dubai Museum of Historical Photographs and Documents with many wonderful old photographs of Dubai from the period between 1948 and 1953.

The marine wing of the museum has photos of fishing, pearling, and boat building. Throughout the building there are many letters, maps, coins, and stamps on display showing the development of the Emirate.

Nearby is the Crossroads of Civilizations Museum , which explores the United Arab Emirates' historic role as a trading center between Asia, Africa, and Europe long before oil became this region's most prominent industry.

Located inside the old residence of Sheikh Hashr bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, who was a member of Dubai's ruling family, the exhibits trace this coastal area's history as part of the global trade routes, with displays of artifacts and manuscripts.

Also on-site are the Rare Books and Manuscripts Museum and the small Armory Museum.

The district's program of rotating collections focuses both on the work of major artists, as well as highlighting new Middle Eastern talent.

This emerging district is also the place to come for fashion and accessory boutiques by local designers, pop-up restaurants, and café life, and it showcases the energetic and youthful buzz of a city, which is usually more noted for its corporate face.

By far, the best times to visit Dubai are the months of November, December, January, February, March, and April when the weather is, in general, at its most pleasant. This is peak tourism season, though, so prepare for hotel prices to be at their highest.

Keen shoppers after discounts galore should head here during January when the entire month is devoted to the Dubai Shopping Festival. Be aware that January is Dubai's coldest month, though, with an average high of 23 degrees Celsius and temperatures dropping as low as 14 degrees.

For the best weather, particularly if you're going to hit the beach or head out into the desert during your trip, plan to travel here during the months of November or April when the average daytime temperatures sit between 25 and 26 degrees Celsius, and only peak as high as 31 degrees.

These two months usher in plenty of blue skies and sunshine for outdoor activities, but without the scorching heat of summer. Whichever month you choose, pack a warmer layer. You will need it to counter the ferocious air conditioning of Dubai's many indoor venues.

Other Considerations When Timing Your Visit to Dubai

Before deciding on which month to visit, check out when Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting is happening. During this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sundown every day. The Islamic calendar is lunar, so the dates for Ramadan shift every year.

Ramadan in the UAE is strictly followed, and eating, drinking, chewing gum, and smoking in all public spaces is forbidden from daybreak to sunset for everyone, including non-Muslims.

Although some restaurants, mostly those based in international brand hotels and usually one designated café in a mall, will still serve food during the day (with blinds pulled down across the restaurant windows, so that those fasting don't need to see people eating) nearly all restaurants and cafés shut during daylight hours and only open up at sunset.

From sunset onwards, it's feasting time, with many hotels and restaurants putting on special Iftar (the Ramadan after sunset meal) menus, which need to be pre-booked due to high demand.

Businesses, including tourist sights and shops, are open, but keep shorter hours for the entire month.

A benefit of visiting during Ramadan is that the city is less busy than usual, as many Dubai locals decide to head on holiday during this month, and the city also receives fewer tourists.

Dubai is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. In this article, I will be sharing with you my top 10 must do leisure activities in Dubai. Before we go into that let me briefly give you an insight into this city-state. Dubai is an Emirate (a state in the United Arab Emirates) that is located on the Arabian Peninsula. It has a population of over 2 million people, and it is one of the wealthiest cities in the world. It has a very diverse culture with people from all around the world living there and it has been described as one of the most liberal cities in the Middle East.

Dubai attracts people from all over the world who come to experience the wonders of this beautiful city, from the world-famous Burj Khalifa to the amazing beaches and malls that offer an experience like no other. Dubai is famous for its luxurious lifestyle and it offers a range of activities for people to enjoy their leisure time. So if you are visiting Dubai or living here, and you are looking for some fun and excitement, here are the top 10 leisure activities to do.

One of Dubai’s most famous sights is its man-made islands that were created by filling in part of Dubai’s coastline with sand, rocks, and coral to create land for building homes, hotels, and shopping malls. One of these islands is Palm Jumeirah which was created to look like a palm tree when seen from above. The Palm has been shaped into three fronds

Table of Contents

1. The Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa a man-made wonder is the tallest building in the world. The Burj Khalifa is a mixed-use building that consists of residential apartments, offices, and hotels. The design of this building took inspiration from Islamic architecture and old Arabic styles. It includes a total of 163 floors with 12 elevators that can take you to the highest point in less than 60 seconds. It is not only a spectacular view from the outside but also offers breathtaking 360- degree views of Dubai from its observation deck on the 124th floor. Guests also get to enjoy some food and drink from the restaurant on this floor.

2. Desert safari

10 must do leisure activities in Dubai

Desert safaris are a very famous activity in Dubai that attracts tourists from all over the world. You simply cannot visit Dubai and not immerse yourself in the Arabic culture through the desert safari experience.

It all begins with a drive through the desert in jeeps or 4x4s, which take you to the sand dunes of the desert. As they speed through the desert, driving up and down the dunes, it gives you the thrill of the desert safari.  The cars will stop at various points so that you can get out and explore the desert on foot, enjoying the scenery while interacting with camels, falcons, and other animals on your way.  The desert safari is a beautiful display of culture and heritage, and it is one not to be missed. It is a must-visit for anyone who visits Dubai and is looking for an adventure.

3. Ski Dubai

Dubai is home to the world’s first indoor ski resort that is open year-round with skiing activities, penguin interactions, and snow! Yes, snow indoors. Ski Dubai is so special to tourists and most importantly locals, as they get a taste of something they do not have at home – a winter experience. This attraction is popular during the festive season among the expats living in Dubai, as they get a taste of a winter Christmas.

4. Shopping

10 must do leisure activities in Dubai

Dubai has become one of the top shopping destinations in the world. From Dubai mall which is the world’s largest shopping mall with more than 1200 shops, restaurants, and much more, to the souqs such as Souk Al Bahar or Dubai Creek, in Deira which are the hub of gold and trade.  Dubai has become a shopping paradise and the center of commerce in the Middle East. Shops in Dubai offer a wide range of stores, from high-end international brands such as Burberry and Louis Vuitton to local shops selling traditional Emirati products such as incense and spices. There are big malls like the Mall of the Emirates, which have all the luxury brands on offer, and smaller malls like Al Ghurair Centre that offer more affordable prices.

Although the shopping experience in Dubai is about the glitz and glamour; it’s also about the cultural diversity, with stores that reflect this global melting pot. Dubai has it all.

5. Beaches in Dubai

Dubai Beaches - my top 10 favourite things to do in Dubai

The long coastline of Dubai offers many beaches with white sands and crystal blue waters, that attract tourists, expats, and locals every summer who are attracted by the sun and sand. Dubai beaches are known for their beauty as well as the amazing hotels and resorts that are situated right next to them. The 12 km coastline offers beaches that suit everyone’s tastes and preferences, from quiet secluded beaches to lively one that is bustling with activities such as water sports and beach volleyball.  Whatever your preferences, you are promised pristine shores with breathtaking views, ensuring that you feel relaxed with the perfect amount of sand and water.

There are two types of beaches in Dubai – one is natural and the other one is man-made. The natural beaches are usually more secluded while man-made ones have more attractions like restaurants, shops, etc.

The beaches in Dubai are often ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and should therefore be at the top of your bucket list.

6. Water Parks

One of the most popular among all attractions in Dubai is the water parks. The water parks in Dubai are an excellent way to have fun with your friends and family, and a great way to beat the heat. They offer something for everyone including thrilling rides, lazy rivers, wave pools, and many more.

Dubai Mall is not only known for its amazing shopping experience, but also for the incredible wonder, the Dubai Mall Aquarium. It is the largest aquarium in the Middle East that is home to many different types of fish including sharks and stingrays, as well as aquatic animals like sea lions and penguins.  It is one of the most visited attractions in Dubai with more than 2 million visitors every year.

The aquarium is not only home to fish, but also to sea lions and penguins and so much more. Visitors can walk through the marine zoo and can get up close with these animals by viewing their natural habitat.  Dubai Mall Aquarium is a fun and educational experience for children and adults.

A boat cruise in Dubai offers an unrivaled experience, with a spectacular view of the city’s skyline and coastline. This activity can be done on a private or shared basis; a private boat cruise will allow you to enjoy your time without any interruptions, while a shared cruise will give you the opportunity to meet new people while enjoying this amazing experience together. Leisure & Lifestyle In Dubai

Glitz and glamour – the two Dubai lifestyle essentials. Discover what it’s like living the lifestyle of Dubai residents.

Find The Best Rates For Your Health Insurance Abroad

The one thing you won’t hear expats complaining about is the lifestyle in Dubai.

The emirate as a whole has developed a strong tourism-based economy. As a result, the attractions and amenities on offer in Dubai are inimitable, and naturally, all residents can benefit.

From a range of theme parks to private beach clubs, from incredibly opulent shopping malls to cinema complexes and an abundance of restaurants, Dubai really does have it all.

Getting your liquor license is no longer required

Here is the good news: in 2020, the UAE introduced new legislation stating that drinking alcohol without a license is no longer illegal in the United Arab Emirates.

New Year fireworks display in Dubai Marina

However, it’s best not to be carried away.

Alcohol prices in Dubai are high because alcohol is taxed at about 30%.  There is literally zero tolerance for drink-driving – so don’t think you can get away with just a quick half before getting on the road.

If you’re stopped and caught out, the penalties are high.  You’re not even supposed to transport alcohol in a taxi or on public transport.

Shopping is integral to the lifestyle in Dubai

Beyond drinking, there is plenty more to do in Dubai.

Shopping is a big part of the lifestyle in Dubai. If you like shopping, there’s the annual Dubai Shopping Festival with incredible events, competitions, and prizes.  It takes place at the start of the year and includes all sorts of additional attractions, such as impressive fireworks displays.

For the rest of the year, you can visit the malls – and whilst the shopping options in Dubai aren’t particularly exceptional (they’re the same products you can buy anywhere in the world), the malls are worth visiting as many of them are attractions in their own right.

Take the Mall of the Emirates, for example; it has its own indoor ski slope.  Or how about Souk Madinat Jumeirah with its waterways?

Dubai Marina Mall is pretty amazing, too, with over 200 retail stores, restaurants, bars, and cafes; there’s also a cinema, ice rink, and indoor sky diving. The mall also features various entertainment options, such as live music performances, art exhibitions, comedy nights, and more.

There are over 40 malls in Dubai, most of them vibrant entertainment centers where it is quite possible to spend a whole day shopping, dining, and having a great day out.

Having shopped ‘til you’ve dropped, perhaps you’d like to have something to eat?

There are so many different restaurants in Dubai that you can eat out at a different establishment every night of the year!  Gordon Ramsey, Jamie Oliver, and Gary Rhodes all have restaurants in the emirate if you fancy something a celebrity chef has allegedly created.

Alternatively, pick a nation’s cuisine and Google it followed by the suffix ‘in Dubai’; chances are you’ll find a restaurant catering to your tastes.

Time Out Dubai is probably the best place to start when looking for a restaurant – and it’s an excellent place to find out what’s going on day to day in the emirate.

Dubai theme parks

With so many options on offer, your chances of getting bored in Dubai are virtually zero.

Dubai amusement parks offer you a fun and exciting way to spend a day. From thrilling rides at IMG Worlds of Adventure to family-friendly fun at Legoland Dubai, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for an adrenaline-filled day out or a more relaxed outing with loved ones, you can find it in this vibrant destination.

IMG Worlds of Adventure is one of the largest indoor theme parks in Dubai, offering an array of thrilling rides and attractions for all ages. With over 20 themed rides, shows, attractions, and interactive experiences spread across four epic zones – Cartoon Network, Marvel, Lost Valley – Dinosaur Adventure, and IMG Boulevard – you will be spoilt.

Legoland Dubai tickets can be bought online or at the entrance. If you buy them online, they will come at a discounted price. You can also find special deals and offers that are posted on the website from time to time. It is advisable to book in advance as this helps avoid long queues and gives you more time to explore all the attractions inside the park.

Motiongate Dubai is a paradise destination for all Hollywood fans. It is a part of Dubai Parks and Resorts and features 27 rides and attractions from some of Hollywood’s biggest movie franchises, such as DreamWorks Animation, Sony Pictures Studios, Lionsgate, and Marvel. With thrilling roller coasters, enchanting live shows, and interactive experiences for all ages – Motiongate Dubai is the perfect destination for family fun.

Not far from Motiongate, there’s another incredible theme park – Bollywood Parks Dubai, renowned for its fun, vibrant, and interactive rides designed to provide an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages. The park features some of Bollywood’s most iconic characters, thrilling rollercoasters, and world-class attractions such as 4D cinema experiences and virtual reality tunnels.

Dubai beach clubs and gyms

Dubai beach clubs and gym memberships make it easy to stay active when living in Dubai. Many beach clubs offer a range of equipment, from water sports to running tracks and outdoor gyms, so there are plenty of ways to keep fit without joining an expensive gym.

The city also offers many jogging trails for those who prefer open-air exercise, as well as a large number of sporting and leisure facilities. Whether it’s swimming, tennis, football or yoga, Dubai has something for everyone – making it the perfect place to stay healthy and active.

Dubai lifestyle – summary

For expats living in Dubai, the one thing that becomes quite important after the initial euphoria of your new life experience has waned is establishing community and companionship.  The good news is that there is no end to clubs and societies you can join, and there are plenty of small groups and friendly fellowships to connect with.

From mother and baby groups to a rugby club, from the Working Mothers Club to the Dubai Irish Society.  Once again, you name it, and it probably exists in Dubai.  Naturally enough, most expats are really welcoming to new members because they can easily remember what it was like to be newly arrived and a bit lost in the big city.

Dubai is now emerging as a top destination for “bleisure” tourism, as more people fly into the city with a mix of business and leisure needs in mind, a spokesperson for a government entity has said.

“The demographics of Dubai’s visitors are changing,” said Hoor Al Khaja, acting associate vice-president for International Operations at Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET).

“More people are travelling to Dubai to visit and remotely work from here. Even for this travel market, many of our delegates chose to come in earlier, utilise their holidays and do some sightseeing. Some are choosing to stay on after the exhibition to enjoy their time here,” Al Khaja told Khaleej Times on the sidelines of Arabian Travel Market 2022, which opened on Monday.

“The city has been booming with new segments and new demographics. We are trying to cater to this new market by offering a new range of visas. We closely monitor their behaviours, search trends and more to meet their needs.”

Hoor Al Khaja is acting associate vice-president for International Operations at Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism.

Dubai had 2.2 million visitors in the first two months of 2022 alone. One of the reasons Dubai has become extremely popular is because of the way the city handled the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Hoor Al Khaja. “We shut down quickly, and we were quick to reopen, but our reopening was very thoughtful and safe. It was a showcase for us as a city of how agile and resilient we are.”

When the world was shutting down, we were going ahead and opening everything we promised we would. We have opened up many new attractions, from Ain Dubai to Deep Dive to the Museum of Future. So as the world comes out of the pandemic, there are so many things for tourists to see and do.

Some of the trends

Bleisure: More people are choosing to combine business and leisure in the city. Several people choose to work remotely while on holiday in the city.

Conscious Travellers: People are searching much more aggressively about the safety protocols and security measures before travelling. This is especially true for those with families. In this respect, Dubai becomes much more appealing as people realize that the city is safe and accessible

Short Booking Lead Times: Traditionally, many of our travellers in markets like Europe or America would book a couple of months or even a year in advance. However, with all the uncertainties and volatility in travel that has cropped up, many people are choosing to make their bookings just a couple of weeks in advance.

Sustainability: More travellers are conscious of the environment, and this plays into their decisions about which destination to pick. People are picking cities that match their ethos. With initiatives like Dubai Can- where residents are being encouraged to carry refillable bottles instead of single-use plastic bottles- Dubai is catering to those segments of travellers.

Long-term tourists: There has been a steady increase in long-term visitors. There are no longer static visitors who come and leave. The tourist demographics have changed significantly, and they keep coming back for longer periods of time.

More people are choosing to combine business and leisure in the city. Several people choose to work remotely while on holiday in the city.

People are searching much more aggressively about the safety protocols and security measures before travelling. This is especially true for those with families. In this respect, Dubai becomes much more appealing as people realize that the city is safe and accessible

Traditionally, many of our travellers in markets like Europe or America would book a couple of months or even a year in advance. However, with all the uncertainties and volatility in travel that has cropped up, many people are choosing to make their bookings just a couple of weeks in advance.

More travellers are conscious of the environment, and this plays into their decisions about which destination to pick. People are picking cities that match their ethos. With initiatives like Dubai Can- where residents are being encouraged to carry refillable bottles instead of single-use plastic bottles- Dubai is catering to those segments of travellers.

There has been a steady increase in long-term visitors. There are no longer static visitors who come and leave. The tourist demographics have changed significantly, and they keep coming back for longer periods of time.

leisure top tourism dubai

Dubai is known as a top travel destination because of its natural beauty, architecture, sites, and infrastructure. However, most of the top attractions are fun activities, sports, and leisure interests of different visitors. Dubai is the ultimate tourist getaway with unique activities, water, and theme parks to fulfil your fantasies. There are numerous activities to engage in during your leisure time, like swimming, walking on the beach, and snow skiing.

Why Visit Dubai

Dubai is not only a modern city, but it is very open to visitors; however, you should remember to respect the law. The strict enforcement of law means that tourists are safe at all times throughout the city. Dubai is also ideal for solo and women travellers.

One of the many reasons to visit and engage in the activities in Dubai is for a unique experience. This city is home to various fun activities, which are only present in this region. For instance, you can visit the tallest building in the world or the art gallery.

You can get into leisure activity in Dubai such as shopping in the exquisite malls or the souqs. There are also shopping activities, such as the Dubai Shopping Festival where you can get discounts and bargains.

Activities, Sports, and Leisure in Dubai

Activities, Sports and Leisure in Dubai

Dubai has become a tourist hub for sports and leisure activities. You can never run out of something to do in this city. The following activities, sports, and leisure in Dubai will keep you excited throughout your visit:

Activities in Dubai

  • There are many activities to engage in; for instance, you can visit the Burj Khalifa, which is the city’s famous landmark. This is the world’s tallest building, and it provides stunning views of the city. From the viewing decks, you can see the Dubai Fountain Show and the synchronized water display from a bird’s eye view.
  • One of the most exciting activities in Dubai is to go sightseeing. Dubai is known for its many sites and attractions. Whether you are interested in traditional culture or modern architecture, there is something for you to explore.
  • You will be surprised to find out the exciting activities in Dubai; for instance, the Green Planet Indoor Rainforest. Although Dubai is a desert, you can visit this exotic rainforest and enjoy the flora and fauna. This activity is suitable for all ages as it educates about nature and gives you a first-hand experience with nature.

Sports in Dubai

  • There are many sports to try in Dubai; for instance, skydiving. Instead of spending the day in your hotel in Dubai, get out and enjoy skydiving. If you are a thrill lover, this port will have your adrenaline running high.
  • Other sports in Dubai include sandboarding, which is similar to snowboarding in the mountains, although this is done in the desert. This is a famous sport in the city. The availability of sand dunes and varying heights and slopes makes Dubai a center for desert-based sports. Many people love sandboarding because it is not only easy, but it is also safe. You don’t have to be an experienced rider or follow a list of procedures. This is one of the solo sports in Dubai to try during your visit.
  • You can also try flyboarding if you love adventure and thrill. This sport is simple because you need to strap the water jet board on your feet and let the force propel you into the air. Your hotel in Dubai might have wonderful features, but you need to get out and enjoy thrilling adventures like flyboarding.

Leisure in Dubai

  • Dubai is not only known for the many sports and activities but because of the many leisure pursuits. The Global Village is a great place to spend your leisure time in Dubai. This is a cultural and seasonal shopping event held in Dubai. The good thing about this event is that there are over 90 countries showcasing their cultures. Entry is only Dh 15, and a lot of activities happen during the weekends. The Global Village starts in November and goes on till April so you can relax for a few days in your hotel in Dubai and still attend the event.
  • Another way to spend your leisure time in Dubai is to visit the fountain, which is found in Dubai Mall. If you want to experience this spectacle, you need to leave your hotel in Dubai early because the show starts at 6pm-10pm every 20 minutes on weekends and 6pm-11pm on weekdays. This is the world’s largest choreographed fountain system it shoots water up to 152.4m high and illuminated by 6,600 lights.
  • If your leisure time involves shopping, there are a lot of places to conduct this activity. Shopping malls are open daily until 10 pm and until midnight during the weekends. You can hide from the hot weather in the mall and enjoy big sales events. If you love fashion, there are many high-end and fashion retail shops that sell designer and quality clothes. There are many exciting things to do in the malls; for instance, you can visit the Dubai Aquarium and underwater zoo in the Dubai Mall. You can also spend your leisure in Dubai by visiting the souqs. There are gold, spices, and textiles souqs to choose authentic and cheap items.
  • Your hotel in Dubai might be wonderful, but you need to get out and spend your leisure time in the beautiful Dubai Miracle Garden. Walk through the beautiful petals and scents and take beautiful pictures. This is one of the parks that are open during the winter. Apart from the Miracle Garden, Dubai has cool places to chill during summer, such as the magnificent waterparks. For instance, Aquaventure which is the largest waterpark in Dubai, or the Wild Wadi Waterpark, which is one of the oldest in the city.

Dubai is a tourist destination not only because of the many sites and architectural designs but because of the many exciting activities and sports. Whether you are a thrill-seeker or love to enjoy your leisure time relaxing, Dubai has everything for you.

7 Underrated Places to Visit in Dubai

Here are some lesser-known destinations that have managed to fly under the radar in Dubai.

Dubai consistently ranks as one of the world's most popular cities, with close to 16 million visitors in 2018 . It's also one of the world's most well-documented cities, and recognized as a top social media influencer hub. So, with whopping tourist numbers and accolades like that, what surprises could the well-known destination still hold?

In 2016, I studied abroad in Dubai for an entire academic year. Much has changed since then, of course, but fortunately, what remained unweathered were the local connections I made. After four years, I still had friends who were happy to help me discover the many parts of Dubai I had not experienced before. And what I learned in the three months that I recently spent working remotely there is that the city still has a few tricks up its sleeve.

Here are a few of the underrated gems I uncovered.

Whether you're traveling with your sweetheart or looking for a fun friend activity, Love Lake is a lesser-known spot that's worth a visit. Located off Al Qudra Road, 45 minutes from downtown Dubai, this place offers a breath of the great outdoors, especially between October and April before it gets too hot, as well as some relaxing activities, like walking the pathway, barbecuing, playing outdoor games, and bird-watching.

Love Lake is also part of the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve and a seasonal landing spot for migratory birds such as flamingos, swans, and Egyptian geese. As a wildlife advocate and Steve Irwin wannabe, finding a natural animal experience in Dubai was an absolute delight. It's a great place to go when you want to relax — you can sit and peacefully watch the birds fly in and out of the area, and the beautiful carp fishes swirl around the water's edge, hoping for some bits of bread.

Dubai has strict rules about flying drones, but if you get a permit or simply check Google Earth, you'll see the stunning reason why its name, Love Lake, is apt: The entire thing is shaped like two huge, interlocking hearts.

Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa

Another hidden desert oasis, Bab Al Shams is a destination worth visiting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Couples and families can stay in one of the 113 traditional Arabian-style rooms. However, as a solo budget traveler, I found a great alternative.

For just around a $30 taxi ride from the Dubai Marina and a $50 USD fee, day visitors can enjoy Bab Al Shams' 360° Nature Brunch picnics, which includes a large umbrella for shade, a classic picnic basket and utensils, and pillows to sit on in front of a low-to-the-ground table.

Mosquitoes and flies don't survive as well in the desert, so you'll enjoy your outdoor meal in peace, and if you're lucky, even catch a glimpse of a reem gazelle or Arabian oryx. Many people come to Dubai for the skyscrapers and shiny landscapes, but its deserts have stunning experiences with fewer crowds and more history.

Queen Elizabeth 2

Dubai has a long-standing relationship with Britain, since it used to be under the empire's protection due to the General Maritime Treaty of 1820. The Queen Elizabeth 2 completed its final voyage on Nov. 26, 2008, and since then has been docked near Dubai's Gold Souk, at Port Rashid. One of Dubai's most unique hotels, it was fully refurbished in 2017 and is remarkably modern. The docked ship operates as a hotel and museum, and with its Heritage Tour ($23 USD), you can walk through the ship's history.

However, if you think that the QE2 presents the perfect opportunity to recreate that iconic shot from "The Parent Trap" in front of the life preserver (as I was), I'll have to burst your bubble, since the majority of shots from the 2002 film were actually filmed on the Queen Mary 2. But the QE2 is a great date spot nonetheless, and a wonderful place to watch the sunset without having to worry about crowds blocking the Dubai skyline.

Lebanon Island

Chances are, you're familiar with Dubai's famous habit of constructing complete islands for leisure. Well, they're at it again with Lebanon Island. The private beach club, restaurant, volleyball court, pool, and events space are reachable only by boat. Dubai's World Islands is regarded as somewhat of a failed project as a whole, but Lebanon Island offers a great opportunity to get off the mainland and away from the crowds for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Palm Jebel Ali

You've likely heard of Palm Jumeirah , home to some of Dubai's most iconic hotels and restaurants. But do you know about its bigger sister? Not far from this world-famous landmark is another man-made archipelago that's two times the size: Palm Jebel Ali. This failed construction project has been salvaged by the outdoor adventurists of Dubai, and you'll find a shooting club, motocross track, camping grounds, and beach completely taken over by kitesurfers.

Though construction began in 2002, the 2008 financial crisis all but stopped development, which is evident by the half-finished bridge. Dubai might be known for its over-the-top attributes, but the kitesurfer's beach had a casual atmosphere. Despite the expensive cars in the parking lot, visitors donned wetsuits and casual beachwear, bringing a bit of California's refreshing surfer energy to Dubai.

The Cove Rotana Resort, Ras Al Khaimah

Technically outside of Dubai, The Cove Rotana Resort is still a must-visit. This hotel's standout feature? The Santorini-esque room structures that are staggered on the hillside down to the lagoon. The Mediterranean vibes continue with bright-pink bougainvillea that weaves throughout the property and the stunning cloudless sunsets. Even better, the resort, which draws families and couples every year, is only around a one-hour drive from downtown Dubai.

Arabian Tea House

Arabian Tea House has a few locations in Dubai, but arguably the best experience can be had at the branch at the Jumeirah Archaeological Site in Jumeirah. The location was excavated in 1969, and unearthed artifacts were determined to be as old as the Abbasid era in the ninth century A.D. It is now managed by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, and you can discover a bit more of Dubai's lesser-known cultural roots before or after your meal.

Pro tip: Try to align your visit during the sunset for a stunning view. It's also preferable to go during the week for prime seating, and as far as what to order, consider some simple karak tea and luqaimat (traditional sweet dessert dumplings) for a light meal. In the middle of this fast-paced city, you can have a serene sit-down meal with family or friends.

Dubai achieves its best ever annual tourism performance with international tourists

07 Feb, 2024

leisure top tourism dubai

- Dubai achieves its best ever annual tourism performance with international tourists growing by 19.4% to 17.15 million in 2023

Dubai welcomed more tourists than ever before in 2023, attracting 17.15 million international overnight visitors over the course of the year, according to the latest data published by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). Representing a 19.4% YoY growth over the 14.36 million tourist arrivals in 2022, last year’s figure also exceeded the previous record of 16.73 million visitors registered in 2019.

The growth aligns with the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 launched just over a year ago by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to further consolidate Dubai’s position as one of the top three global cities for business and leisure, and the best city to visit, live and work in.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, said: “The best ever performance of Dubai's tourism sector in 2023 is a testament to the foresight of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. His Highness’s commitment to fostering resilience, excellence and innovation across economic sectors and encouraging meaningful public-private partnerships that deliver value has had a transformative impact on tourism development in the emirate.

Dubai’s ability to constantly generate diverse and refreshingly novel travel and tourism experiences catering to a wide range of visitors has been a key factor behind this exceptional performance. With several indicators outperforming pre-pandemic levels, this year’s results mark Dubai out as a vibrant focal point of growth in the global tourism landscape.”

Celebrating a record-breaking year in 2023, Dubai further bolstered its ranking as the No.1 global destination for an unprecedented third successive year in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2024, the first city to achieve this unique accolade. The milestones are testament to the emirate’s vibrant and diverse offerings, supported by world-class infrastructure, exceptional service at all touchpoints, and continuous collaboration between the government and private sectors.

The city caters to travellers of all budgets and preferences, and a year-round calendar of business, leisure and sporting events continues to attract international visitors.  The tourism sector's performance closely parallels the emirate's 3.3% GDP growth in the first nine months of 2023, further highlighting the symbiotic relationship between tourism and economic prosperity. Accommodation and food services activities witnessed a remarkable 11.1% growth, solidifying Dubai’s position as a global tourism leader.

Dubai’s international visitor performance has outshone global tourism trends, with the latest data from the UN World Tourism Organisation revealing that, overall, international tourism reached 88% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2023. The only region to overcome pre-pandemic levels with 22% visitation growth above 2019, the Middle East led global recovery in relative terms.

His Excellency, Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), said: "The significant rebound of Dubai's tourism sector, outstripping global recovery rates, stands as a testament to the vision and leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This surge not only commemorates the inaugural year of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 but also highlights the efficacy of a strategy that is a decade in the making, exemplifying resilience and adaptability as central to our economic impetus.

Under the oversight of this decisive leadership and a proven public-private partnership model, Dubai has sustained robust growth, fostering confidence within local and global industries, players and enablers.

Our success stems from a diversified portfolio, with significant gains in leisure, new emerging segments, and the MICE sector as a whole, which have been further catalysed by liberal visa policies and dynamic private sector ambition. These strides reinforce Dubai's status as a premier destination for living, visiting, and conducting business.

With the Dubai Economic Agenda D33’s strategy serving as our economic compass for the next ten years, we are committed to strengthening the tourism sector, enhancing our assets and infrastructure, and stimulating broader economic growth. This comprehensive approach ensures tourism thrives in tandem with our goals of talent acquisition, business acceleration and government innovation, to position Dubai as the epicentre for all those eyeing their next phase of growth and expansion."

Key regions maintain momentum

The strong tourism performance in 2023 saw Dubai maintain its position as a first-choice travel destination for visitors both from key traditional and emerging markets. From a regional perspective, the GCC and MENA delivered a combined 28% of the share, demonstrating Dubai’s allure as a trusted and favoured destination for visitors from neighbouring markets. Western Europe and South Asia accounted for 19% and 18% of arrivals respectively, while CIS/Eastern Europe recorded a 13% share. The North Asia and South-East Asia region accounted for 9% of arrivals, the Americas contributed 7%, Africa 4% and Australasia 2%.

Dubai’s hospitality sector, which is integral to the emirate’s destination promise and overall growth of the tourism industry, continued to perform strongly, surpassing pre-pandemic levels across all hospitality metrics - Occupancy, Occupied Room Nights, Guests’ Length of Stay, Average Daily Rate (ADR), and Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR).

Occupancy remains among the highest in the world

Average occupancy for the hotel sector in 2023 stood at 77.4%, among the world’s highest, increasing from 72.9% in 2022 and exceeding the 75.3% average occupancy in 2019. The high occupancy level is an exceptional achievement, given an overall 19% increase in room supply in 2023 compared to 2019.

Milestone 150,000 room keys achieved

Dubai’s hotel inventory at the end of December 2023 comprised 150,291 rooms at 821 establishments, compared to 146,496 rooms available at the end of December 2022 across 804 establishments and 126,120 rooms available at the end of December 2019 across 741 establishments. Last year’s milestone achievement reflects the growth and success in the hospitality industry.

Occupied room nights surge to record high

In 2023, occupied room nights soared to a record high of 41.70 million, marking a 11% increase compared to 2022 (37.43 million). This growth also represents a substantial 30% rise from the pre-pandemic figures of 2019, which saw 32.11 million occupied room nights.

Reflecting the commitment of the city and hospitality sector to offer competitive pricing, the 2023 ADR of AED536 matched the ADR in 2022. The hotel sector’s robust performance is also evident in its RevPAR growth – an increase of 6% compared to 2022 (AED415 vs. AED391) and a growth of 33% over the pre-pandemic period of 2019 (RevPAR of AED312). Guests’ Length of Stay was 3.8 nights in 2023, a 10% increase from 3.4 nights in 2019.

His Excellency Issam Kazim, CEO of the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), said: “As Dubai continues its exponential growth in alignment with the D33 Agenda set forth by our forward-thinking leadership, we remain committed to further elevating our standards and to advancing with innovative and distinctive world-class infrastructure, experiences and attractions.

The extensive range of offerings and Dubai's reputation as a secure, inclusive and accessible destination have been consistently recognised across multiple global indices, culminating in the city being crowned the No.1 global destination for an unprecedented third year in a row in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2024.

Our partners have played a crucial role in achieving this top ranking through their contributions to Dubai's tourism expansion and the industry's rapid resurgence, especially with their active involvement in our global campaigns and marketing endeavours. The sustained success will further enhance visitors’ enduring trust, confidence and affinity for Dubai, as it accelerates towards the goal of becoming the best city to visit, live and work in, and ultimately converting visitors into long-term residents.

We are strategically harnessing the significant momentum generated during a highly successful 2023 to drive growth across all segments of tourism. As we look forward to welcoming more visitors in 2024, the unwavering support of our public and private sector partners will be pivotal in enhancing our capacity to showcase our unparalleled offerings tailored to cater to the diverse preferences and budgets of international travellers.”

Global liveability hub

In addition to securing the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Awards, Dubai also garnered recognition across various fronts, offering residents and visitors a unique blend of opportunities, safety, and world-class amenities in a vibrant and dynamic setting.

In a report by financial services provider Remitly, Dubai was hailed as the No.1 city in the world to relocate to in 2023, showcasing its allure as a preferred destination for individuals seeking new opportunities and a high quality of life. Furthermore, property consultancy Savills identified Dubai as the best city in the world for remote workers, emphasising its conducive environment for professionals embracing the virtual working lifestyle.

Dubai’s appeal as a thriving global hub was further highlighted by Euromonitor International’s Top 100 City Destinations Index 2023, which named Dubai the world’s No.2 city destination, highlighting its popularity among international travellers. The city's recognition as one of the top 10 cities in the Global Power City Index, as reported by the Mori Memorial Foundation’s Institute for Urban Strategies in Japan, further reinforces its stature as a key player on the global stage.

Kicking off global partnerships and campaigns

As part of its year-round drive to showcase Dubai to the world, DET entered into a landmark collaboration with Spanish football giants Real Madrid Club de Fútbol. The multi-year agreement has brought together two iconic brands and builds on Real Madrid’s longtime partnership with Dubai's flagship airline, Emirates, while Dubai Parks and Resorts™ will also be home to the first Real Madrid-themed park, Real Madrid World.

Keeping with the emirate’s “nothing is impossible” spirit, Dubai hosted another record-breaking stunt with Red Bull Air Race Champion Luke Czepiela landing his plane on the helipad of Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, encouraging visitors and residents to achieve new heights and push boundaries. Another feat in 2023 saw American Brian Grubb performing a world-first wakeskate and base jump at the Address Beach Resort.

Dubai has also established a strong and ongoing partnership with Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer that goes beyond a typical concert. "Hans Zimmer Live" marked his first Middle East performance at Dubai's Coca-Cola Arena during the region’s longest running Dubai Shopping Festival, kicking off a deep exploration into the city's culture.

This collaboration was not just a one-time show. Zimmer has become a vocal supporter of Dubai, creating "Sounds of Dubai," a unique musical piece that captures the city's vibe.

More than just entertainment, this collaboration aligns with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, showcasing Dubai's ability to blend tradition with innovation, highlighting the value in its creative talent. This diverse approach enriches Dubai's global image as a hub for culture and collaboration, contributing to the city's ongoing success story.

International events destination

Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE) positions Dubai as an international entertainment hub, and in 2023, the city hosted an array of year-round events spearheaded by the iconic Dubai Shopping Festival. DFRE’s annual Retail Calendar encompasses everything from arts and books, food and sports, music and concerts, heritage and culture through to shopping and fashion, as well as retail promotions offering life-changing prizes to lucky residents and visitors.

The region’s leading destination for business events, Dubai attracts a wide range of business travellers through its calendar of annual exhibitions and trade shows that are among the largest in the world. Major business and leisure events held in 2023 included Gulfood (134,000 visitors and 5,000 exhibitors), Gitex Global Dubai (170,000 visitors and 6,000 exhibitors), the International Boat Show (30,000 visitors) and Arabian Travel Market (40,000 visitors). Dubai Business Events, part of DET and the city’s official convention bureau, ensured continued growth in this space by working with stakeholders to win a record 349 bids to host international conferences, congresses, meetings, and incentive travel programmes over the coming years.

Culinary innovation and accolades

With a vibrant and thriving gastronomy scene, Dubai is a modern culinary capital with 13,000 restaurants and cafes offering a wide variety of cuisines and experiences. Following its launch in 2022, the second edition of the MICHELIN Guide Dubai was released in 2023, with three new one-star restaurants and one new two-starred included. In total, the 2023 guide featured 90 restaurants, up from 69, including three that were awarded two stars, 11 with one star, three with a Green Star, 17 Bib Gourmands and 59 Michelin selected restaurants.

Two homegrown Dubai restaurants were included in The World's 50 Best Restaurants List for 2023. Trèsind Studio was ranked at No.11, Orfali Bros Bistro was No.46 while Ossiano was part of the extended list, at No.87. There were also 113 Dubai restaurants included in the Gault&Millau UAE 2023 guide.

Delivering on sustainability goals

Dubai is a leader in sustainability, with its efforts aligning with global objectives, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030. Aligned with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy, the ongoing Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) drive initiated by DET provides support for the hospitality industry through several programmes.

In July 2023, DET launched the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp, a new initiative, as part of DST, that recently recognised 70 hotels with the highest level of adherence to DET’s ‘19 Sustainability Requirements’, the first of its kind in the region. Developed in collaboration with Dubai’s hospitality sector, the stamp is designed to accelerate efforts towards empowering the tourism sector to achieve its sustainability goals and serve as a validation of the hotel’s dedication to sustainable practices.

Other sustainability initiatives include Dubai Can, with its ‘Refill for Life’ campaign promoting the use of reusable bottles and encouraging people to refill via 50 water fountains established throughout the city. A second Dubai Can project, the Dubai Reef, was launched in December 2023. One of the world’s largest marine reef developments, Dubai Reef is part of the city’s efforts to increase fish stocks, support sustainable fishing, and contribute to boosting food security. It will also play a vital role in reducing carbon emissions and increasing marine biodiversity.

DET also relaunched the pioneering Carbon Calculator tool that measures the carbon footprint within Dubai’s hospitality sector. The city’s sustainability profile received a significant boost towards the end of 2023 when the UAE hosted COP28, the UN Climate Change Conference, at Expo City Dubai.

Global cruise and yacht tourism destination

As a key pillar of the emirate’s tourism industry, cruise tourism will help drive efforts to transform Dubai into one of the world’s top three cities for business and leisure in line with the D33 Agenda. The expansion of the cruise sector has significant benefits for Dubai as a regional tourism hub and the development of the cruising industry further consolidates Dubai’s status as a gateway to the region.

Dubai’s 2023-2024 cruise season was launched with the arrival of the luxury liner Mein Schiff 2 in October. The vessel docked at the Hamdan bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal at Mina Rashid, marking the start of another exciting period for cruise enthusiasts. Visitation by cruise passengers is largely concentrated around key cruise hubs, such as Mina Rashid which offers easy access to the historic Dubai Creek, home to the city’s rich cultural heritage, and Dubai Harbour located next to the lively Dubai Marina and the iconic Palm Jumeirah.  Dubai’s position as the region’s cruise hub is further validated by the city being awarded the Best Port at the CRUCEROADICTO AWARDS in Spain, an international recognition of the best cruise lines, ships, and ports selected by global cruise travellers.

With 15 marinas, more than 3,600 berths and seamless support facilities for pleasure crafts, superyachts and gigayachts, Dubai has also become a magnet for global yacht tourism. The winter season from October to April attracts more and more yachts annually and the emirate’s strategic location provides easy access to some of the most scenic yachting destinations in the region, as well as the UAE’s stunning coastline.

New initiatives to spur growth

Another major initiative announced in 2023 was the Dubai Master Plan for Public Beaches, which aims to increase the length of public beaches by 400% by 2040 and increase services offered on public beaches by 300% by 2025. Dubai’s tourism offering will be further expanded with the implementation of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. Strategic goals of this long-term plan include doubling green and leisure areas and enhancing their qualities, safeguarding the emirate’s cultural and urban heritage, and providing sustainable and flexible means of mobility. Under the Master Plan, the total space dedicated to hotels and tourist activities will increase by over 100% over the next two decades.
