Taylor Swift was gunning for a truly epic release week long before The Tortured Poets Department actually dropped, with the pop star surprising fans by unleashing 31 new songs — as opposed to the previously confirmed 16 main and four bonus tracks — in the span of two hours April 19.
Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’: All 31 Tracks Ranked
She’d been crafting the sprawling, Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner-produced project for about two years before it finally arrived, with the singer telling fans at a February Eras Tour show that she’d been working on it since the moment she submitted the Billboard 200 -topping Midnights to her label some time in 2022. The unavoidable news cycle about her breakups from longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn and The 1975’s Matty Healy , as well as her blossoming romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, only added fuel to the fire of hype leading up to Tortured Poets , which Swift further stoked by saying at another Eras concert , âIâve never had an album where I needed songwriting more.”
What’s Your Favorite Track From Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department…
Come April 19, and her inimitable lyricism , discourse-provoking songwriting and apparent allusions to the aforementioned relationships proved to be more than enough to make millions of listeners tune in, the 14-time Grammy winner smashing records left and right in the process. Before Tortured Poets even hit the Billboard charts, it was doing unprecedented numbers in streaming, sales and vinyl — not to mention selling 1.4 million copies in its first day on the market, according to Luminate — giving Swift’s peers a run for their money in more ways than one.
Keep reading to see all of the major records The Tortured Poets Department has broken — so far — below.
Spotify's Most Pre-Saved Countdown
Before Tortured Poets was even released, its countdown page on Spotify broke the streaming service’s record for most pre-saves in history. The countdown launched on March 28, two weeks ahead of the album’s release date, inviting Swifties to watch as each second ticked down.
Spotify also continuously updated the tab with links to the pop starâs merch as well as cryptic videos of Swift printing lyrics from the LP with a typewriter.
Single-Week Vinyl Sales
Of Tortured Poets 1.5 million first-week sales, 700,000 of those copies were vinyl. That breaks Swiftâs own record for the largest sales week for an album on vinyl in the modern era, or since Luminate began tracking data in 1991, beating the 693,000 sold of 1989 (Taylorâs Version) in its first week in 2023.
Prior to its release, Tay announced four vinyl variants of Tortured Poets — “The Manuscript,” “The Albatross,” “The Bolter” and “The Black Dog” — each containing the 16 songs on the album’s main tracklist plus one bonus song.
Single-Day Spotify Album Streams
Not only did Tortured Poets become Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day in history in less than 12 hours after its release, it also became the first album on the platform to amass more than 300 million streams in a single day ever.
The streaming service’s previous single-day record-holder was BeyoncĂŠ, whose Cowboy Carter garnered 300.41 million on-demand official streams in its first full week of release.

Single-Day Spotify Song Streams
Similarly, the opening track on The Tortured Poets Department — “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone — broke Spotify’s record for the most streams ever garnered by one song in a day.

Apple Music Pop Albums
Apple Music also shared that The Tortured Poets Department had broken its record for biggest pop album of all time by first-day streams shortly after the LP’s release.

Fastest Album to 1 Billion Streams on Spotify
Just five days after TTPD was released, it became the first album in Spotify history to surpass one billion streams in a single week. It now stands as the fastest album in history to hit the milestone.
Biggest Streaming Week of All Time
In its first six days on the market, Tortured Poets became the most streamed album in a single week with 799 million streams across all platforms, surpassing Drake’s previous record of 745.92 million with his 2018 LP Scorpion , according to Luminate.

Taylor Swift releases âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ double album ahead of Record Store Day: Highlights
Catch up on all things 'The Tortured Poets Department':
- Fans celebrated Swift's midnight release of "The Tortured Poets Department" with listening parties and themed gatherings . Many critics praised Swift in their reviews.
- Swift surprised fans at 2 a.m. ET with news of 15 extra songs.
- The album features collaborations with Post Malone and Florence + the Machine. Swift described writing the album as deeply personal. "Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it," she said.
- NBC News' resident Swifties stayed up to blog the biggest takeaways after the album's release.
Vinyl industry rep says pandemic-era manufacturing bottlenecks have eased
"The Tortured Poets Department" is set to be released in special-edition "ghost"-colored vinyl, available both directly through Swift's website and exclusively at Target.
During the pandemic, that might have alarmed vinyl record buyers. As vinyl plants shuttered and employees were sidelined, vinyl production ground to a halt, causing reports of weekslong backlogs and orders going unfulfilled outright.
But in an interview with NBC News on Friday, Dustin Blocker, president of the Vinyl Records Manufacturing Association, said those issues have been resolved and that suppliers now have more than enough capacity to handle any orders coming their way, including massive ones like Swift's.
"In Q3 2023, we saw the [production] timeline start to go back to normal," Blocker said. "And in Q4 it really got back to normal. Now, everyone, including the huge plants, takes only 8-12 weeks [to produce] ... so it's very good news for everyone."
Blocker said any price increases on the supply side sparked by the bottlenecks have essentially reversed.
So, the $40 price tag on the Target edition of "TTPD" is most likely the result of choices made by Swift, her label and the retailer, he said.
Jack Antonoff is sharing BTS pics

Jack Antonoff is giving Swifties what they want: more content.
The Bleachers frontman, who is also Swiftâs longtime collaborator and friend, shared pictures of Swift and collaborators on the album, including Florence Welch .
The acting U.S. secretary of labor has a question for Taylor
Acting U.S. Labor Department Secretary Julie Su has a key question for Taylor Swift and her "Tortured Poets Department":
"Is this department unionized?" she wrote in a post on X .
Su, 55, has served as acting secretary since March 2023; she has faced stumbling blocks to being confirmed full time for the role over her perceived pro-union bias .
Destin celebrates Swift shoutout
Nicole Duarte
The city of Destin, Florida, is here for the Swiftie boost.
Google searches for the beach town shot up minutes after Swiftâs âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ was released. The album mentions Destin in the song âFlorida!!!â featuring Florence + The Machine.
The city is celebrating the shoutout:
As is Destin's mayor:
Trump gets a question on Taylor
Vaughn Hillyard
A reporter who is part of the pool following Donald Trump on Friday at his hush money trial was able to get in a question to the former president about the new albums.
Trump didn't engage.
Taylor Swift reveals âDatelineâ as an inspiration for âFlorida!!!â
Maddie Ellis, TODAY
Taylor Swift has taken over radio stations, from Channel 13 on SiriusXM to iHeartRadio briefly renaming itself to iHeartTaylor and sharing messages from the songwriter.
Swift revealed in a soundbite played on iHeartRadio that âFlorida!!!â â the eighth track of the album and featuring Florence + the Machine â was inspired by âDateline.â
âIâm always watching, like âDateline,ââ Swift said with a laugh. âPeople, you know, have these crimes that they commit where they immediately skip town and go to Florida. They try to reinvent themselves, have a new identity, blend in.â
Itâs the same with heartbreak, she said.
âI think when you go through a heartbreak, thereâs a part of you that thinks, âI want a new name. I want a new life,ââ she said.
Or perhaps in Swiftâs case â a new era?

The double album appeared to avoid leaks
Kaetlyn Liddy
The standard edition of "The Tortured Poets Department" is said to have been leaked ahead the album's release. The origin of the apparent leaks is unclear, but none of the songs on the extended "anthology" version of the album seem to have been compromised.
Leaks of major artists' work sometimes occur when physical copies of the album arrive prematurely at record stores or department stores, before the tracks are released on streaming platforms. Fans suspect the surprise drop of the double album was a factor in the 15 extra tracks avoiding leaks.
The extra content was so unexpected that the lyrics of the anthology version have yet to be uploaded to Spotify .
âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ broke a Spotify record in 12 hours
"The Tortured Poets Department" is already Spotifyâs most-streamed album in a single day this year, edging out BeyoncĂŠ's "Cowboy Carter" in less than 12 hours, Spotify confirmed to NBC News.
Swift currently holds the all-time record for most streams in a day by album and by artist for 2022's "Midnights."
Who are The Blue Nile? About the Scottish band named by Swift
In the album's ninth track â "Guilty as Sin?" â Swift name-drops a beloved '80s Scottish band, The Blue Nile.
"Drowning in The Blue Nile. He sent me 'Downtown Lights.' I hadnât heard it in a while," Swift says in the song.
"Downtown Lights," released in 1989, was the peak of The Blue Nile's commercial success in the U.S., with the song reaching No. 10 on the Billboard American Modern Rock Tracks chart. 1989 is also Swift's birth year and the title of her fifth studio album.
Known for their avoidance of publicity, The Blue Nile has released just four albums since forming in 1981.
Fans share their theories and joy on social media
It wouldn't be a new Taylor Swift album without fans wondering who it's about or decoding the names mentioned in each song. (Who is Cassandra , Taylor?)
That speculation will surely continue, but now that the album is out, fans can't believe their luck. Reactions on social media praised the sonic and lyrical range of the album, saying that "everybody gets everything," whether you listen to Swift for her synth-pop hits or her intimate folk songs.
Author and creator John Green couldn't wait to wake up his daughter to tell her she gets 31 new Taylor Swift songs today.

TikTok rolls out new features to celebrate new album
Daysia Tolentino
As Swifties show their love for "The Tortured Poets Department" on TikTok, they have the chance to be featured in a "Fan Spotlight" carousel that highlights videos with the #TORTUREDPOETSDEPARTMENT hashtag.
TikTok released a "Taylor Swift In-App Experience" that serves as a landing page for all things "TTPD." Fans can complete challenges in exchange for limited-edition "TTPD" profile frames and some Taylor-related searches unlock animations inspired by the album. Searches for "Taylor Swift," "Taylor Nation," and "The Tortured Poets Department" lead fans to the landing page.
The features are particularly notable because Swift's music was pulled off the platform earlier this year as part of a disput between TikTok and Universal Music Group, though many of her tracks returned earlier this month .
Fans on TikTok have already been loving "TTPD," sharing numerous theories , tears and rankings .
Swift's song 'Fortnight' with Post Malone hits No. 1 on Apple
Jason Abbruzzese
That didn't take long.
The song "Fornight" off Swift's new album quickly hit No. 1 on Apple's top song chart. It features rapper and singer Post Malone.
Swift also took the next four spots with "The Tortured Poets Department," "So Long, London," "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toy," and "Down Bad."
The National's Aaron Dessner on working with Swift: 'some of the most lyrically acute, intricate, vulnerable and cathartic' songs
Aaron Dessner, a musician who is part of the rock band The National, posted to Instagram about working with Swift on the album along with a pic of her in a studio.
He said that he has now worked with swift on more than 60 songs, including 17 across her newest release.
"I am forever grateful to Taylor for sharing her insane talents with and trusting me with her music. I believe these songs are some of the most lyrically acute, intricate, vulnerable and cathartic Taylor has ever written and I am continually astonished by her skills as a songwriter and performer," he wrote, adding in thanks to a long list of other artists and producers.
Will Swift break her own streaming records?
The October 2022 release of Swift's 10th studio album, "Midnights" shattered records on Spotify and Apple Music.
"Midnights" became Spotify's most-streamed album in a single day with 184.6 million streams when it debuted. Swift also broke the record for most-streamed artist in a single day on Spotify with 228 million streams.
The album also become the biggest album of all time by a female artist in Apple Music history by first-day and first-week streams worldwide.
Can Swift outdo herself?
Will Swift's album inspire a new college course?
As Swift became increasingly synonymous with American pop culture, universities around the country started creating entire courses dedicated to studying her lyricism and impact.
Some courses focus on Swift as a business and marketing mastermind, while others analyze her storytelling techniques with all the detail and skill of poetry analysis.
Time will tell whether this new album will inspire yet another college course. Our guess is with all the literary references, it's sure to be on some professors minds.

Saturday is Record Store Day
The release of "The Tortured Poets Department" will come just in time for a notable day in the music industry calendar: Record Store Day on April 20. The annual event has been observed since 2007 to celebrate independent record stores and is often accompanied by exclusive drops by major artists.
Swift has yet to announce a special event, but the date is marked in the TTPD Timetable on her Instagram, suggesting she might have something up her sleeve.
Swift describes new album: 'Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.'
Patrick Smith
Taylor Swift has offered fans a glimpse into the creative process behind "The Tortured Poets Society" and the emotions that inspired it.
In a press release Friday morning to accompany the new release, the artist said:
"The Tortured Poets Department. An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time â one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure.
"This period of the authorâs life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted.
"This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.
"And then all thatâs left behind is the tortured poetry."
To sleep or stream? Swifties question staying up even later
Can you wait until the morning to listen to the 15 extra songs on Swift's anthology?
If you answered no, you're not alone. Online, fans joked that they didn't expect to get this little shut eye.
Among the fans: Gen Z Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla.
"I got votes in the morning. Do I sleep or listen" he wrote .
Others had similar thoughts.
"TAYLOR I HAVE A JOB OH MY GOD" wrote one fan, tagging the artist on X .
"lol Taylor I have to get up early to run errands before work please" wrote another X user.
Leave it to Swift to give us adrenaline to keep us all up a little longer.

Surprise: a double album!
"The Tortured Poets Department" is a secret DOUBLE album.
In a 2 a.m. ET surprise, Swift announced an extra 15 songs.
"Iâd written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so hereâs the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology," she wrote on X . "15 extra songs. And now the story isnât mine anymore⌠itâs all yours."
It's 2 a.m.
Now what, Taylor?
ICYMI: Swift's powerhouse publicist Tree Paine gets profiled by WSJ
Swift's longtime publicist, Tree Paine, whom many fans know by name, was the subject of a lengthy Wall Street Journal article published Thursday ahead of the new album's release.
While she declined to be interviewed for the story, it delves into how she became one of the most powerful people in the entertainment industry since she joined Swift's camp in 2014.
âThere isnât a publicist in NY, LA or Nashville that wouldnât jump at an opportunity to work with someone as talented as Taylor Swift and her management team,â Paine said at the time, according to the New York Post .

Couples are now wary of Swift's 'Lover' as a love song
Elena Nicolaou, TODAY
âLoverâ â at least until recently â was widely received as one of Swiftâs classic love songs. When the album of the same name came out in 2019, its title single was declared first dance song material , or even a â wedding waltz .â
In the song, Swift paints a portrait of quiet intimacy. Her wild âRedâ days, of thrilling romances with highs and lows and uncertainties in between, had settled into something steadier with one person, captured by a simple chorus: âYouâre my, my, my, my lover.â
But that interpretation is now in question, as Swift recasts some of her songs in a different light. Ahead of the release of âThe Tortured Poets Department,â she released five playlists on Apple Music , sorting old songs into groups inspired by the five stages of grief, or âheartbreak.â
Aaron Dessner is credited as a songwriter on five of 16 tracks
Dessner, who is a member of the bands The National and Big Red Machine, is one of two producers who worked on "The Tortured Poets Department."
He's credited as a songwriter on five of the 16 tracks on the standard album.
Dessner first collaborated with Swift on her eighth studio album, âFolklore,â for which he shared in the Grammy win for album of the year. He made several guest appearances with Swift on the U.S. leg of the Eras Tour, joining her onstage during the acoustic set for performances of songs they wrote together.
Here's what some critics are saying in their reviews
Angela Yang
The critics have spoken. Here's a roundup of some of their takeaways on "The Tortured Poets Department."
Billboard âs Jason Lipshutz praised Swiftâs boldness for releasing a âknowingly messy, wildly unguarded breakup albumâ at whatâs arguably the peak of her career. It's more mature than her past heartbreak albums, he writes, and ânot everyone will love it, but the ones who get it will adore it fiercely.â
Variety âs Chris Willman wrote that the album can serve as an âunapologetically dramaticâ soundtrack to listenersâ own heartbreaks.
Labeling it Swiftâs most personal album yet, Rolling Stone âs Rob Sheffield described it as âthe cathartic confession of a woman who thought she had adulthood â and adult romance â all figured out, only to find herself realizing she knows nothing.â
And unlike on past albums, Swift doesnât portray herself as a victim in this one, wrote the Los Angeles Times â Mikael Wood. Instead, the album emanates âa proudly villainous energy as Swift embraces her messiest and most chaotic tendencies.â
Jack Antonoff, Swift's longtime collaborator, posts love for album
Antonoff, Swiftâs longtime collaborator and friend, shared his love for the new album on X .
"Love this album more than I can say," wrote Antonoff, who worked on âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ as a producer.
Antonoff also co-wrote eight of the album's tracks.
Swifties are starting to post reax on X
In typical fashion after a Swift album drops, reactions from fans are pouring in online, and they TEND TO COME IN ALL CAPS.
As any Swiftie will tell you, listening to new music from the artist always proves to be a collective emotional experience.
Spotify appears to be holding it together (so far)
The last time Swift debuted a brand-new album, Spotify crashed. No major issues so far this time around.
Shoutout to the engineers and people behind the scenes who are probably working overtime to make sure Swifties don't panic.
We have a new countdown
Donât go to bed yet! Taylor Swiftâs Instagram page is displaying a new countdown to 2 a.m. ET. This wasn't on the timetable ...
Swift releases statement after album drop
In her first social media post after âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ was released, Swift shared a statement about the album online.
These songs reflect her experiences from a moment in time that was equally âsensational and sorrowful,â she wrote, adding that it is a chapter now closed.
âOnce we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it,â Swift wrote. âAnd then all thatâs left behind is the tortured poetry.â
Who is Clara Bow?
Daniel Arkin
The 16th and final track on the album is named for Clara Bow, one of the leading lights of Hollywoodâs silent era.
Bow, unlike a lot of stars from the 1920s, managed to successfully pivot to roles in talkies by the end of the decade. She co-starred in âWingsâ (1927), which today is probably best known as the first movie to win the Oscar for best picture.
Iâm not a Swiftie, so I donât have much insight into how Taylorâs music connects to Bowâs acting career â but Iâm curious how this track will be interpreted by the die-hards.
The album is here
BRB, weâre busy listening with the rest of yâall.

Bars, venues hold special Swift parties
On the eve of Swiftâs album drop, event venues across the country (and around the world) hosted release parties so Swifties could get their first listen of the âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ on the dance floor.
At Pianos in New York, music from across Swiftâs discography will play until the new album drops at midnight. Attendees are encouraged to come in themed outfits and friendship bracelets, and the bar will be serving Swift-inspired cocktails.
In Los Angeles, El Cid is hosting a listening party complete with fan-made merch, giveaways and a themed wall for photos. Attendees can also expect performances from drag queen Jade Jolie, who appeared in Swiftâs âYou Need to Calm Downâ music video.
Several Swiftie-themed events are also being held across the Washington, D.C., area, according to The Washington Post, which compiled a list .
A Swiftie mom and daughter are hosting their own album party
Kristie Gilmore, 36, is ready to celebrate with her daughter, who was born shortly after Swift's â1989â album and has been a Swiftie ever since.
Gilmore decorated her Boston-area apartment with balloons, signs and stickers in the color palette of âThe Tortured Poets Department.â She sprinkled the table with handmade confetti of the albumâs logo and made TTPD-themed âmembership cardsâ for themselves and each of her daughterâs friends.
âTheyâve been counting down since Taylor announced this album,â Gilmore said, adding, âTheyâre just hanging out, having a dance party. Theyâre gonna try to stay up till midnight and listen to it.â
What are the track lengths?
The average track length on âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ is 4 minutes and 4 seconds, making it the third longest album across Swiftâs discography.
The longest song is âBut Daddy I Love Him,â which clocks in at 5 minutes and 40 seconds.
âI Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)â is the shortest song, at 2 minutes and 36 seconds.
Travis Kelce shared his early thoughts about the album
Ahead of the Super Bowl, Swift's boyfriend, Travis Kelce, the star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, weighed in on the new album.
âI have heard some of it, yes. It is unbelievable,â Kelce said . âI canât wait for her to shake up the world when it finally drops.â
The couple , who have become the internet's favorite love story , were most recently spotted at Coachella 's first weekend.
Taylor Swift beat reporter speaks to NBC's Hallie Jackson
USA Todayâs Taylor Swift reporter , Bryan West, spoke with NBC News about the album drop and all the Easter eggs being spotted by fans.
Swift's music is back on TikTok despite UMG dispute
Kalhan Rosenblatt
Some songs that Swift fans know âAll Too Wellâ returned to TikTok this month, months after they were removed.
The songs were among the many tracks Universal Music Group pulled off TikTok after the label and the platform failed to reach an agreement  this year. (UMG has no relationship to NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News.)
UMG, known as one of the âBig Threeâ global music companies, cleared its music from TikTok in late January, saying it was doing so because of a lack of compensation for artists and songwriters. TikTok previously fired back at UMG, accusing the company of putting âtheir own greed above the interests of artists and songwriters.â
The economics of 'The Tortured Poets Department'
Doha Madani
Die-hard Taylor Swift fans will be spending a pretty penny on her latest album release as she releases four variants of the album with one exclusive track each.
Each variant of âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ is named after the bonus song found at the end of the album: âThe Manuscript,â âThe Bolter,â âThe Albatrossâ and âThe Black Dog.â If a fan wanted to collect them all, the minimum for $13.99 CDs at a store would cost at least $55.96 before taxes.
Longtime Swifties are already familiar with her tendency to provide deluxe editions, as anyone who was around for her original â1989â release can recall the Target exclusive that included three bonus tracks and three voice memos recorded by Swift.Â
Her âMidnightsâ release included a Target exclusive track that was added to streaming only months later, and in May she released a new song on âMidnights (The Late Night Edition).â But this is the first time Swift has put an exclusive song on each individual variant, with no clear timeline for when they might be added to streaming.Â
2024: The year of Post Malone and the pop girlies
Rebecca Cohen
Fresh off of a collab with BeyoncĂŠ on "LEVII'S JEANS" from her now-famed "Cowboy Carter," Post Malone finds himself on another major release of 2024: Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department."
He joins Swift on the album's first song, "Fortnight." Swift announced that "Fortnight" would be the album's lead single and the song for which she is releasing a music video 8 o'clock tomorrow night.
"Iâve been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation and those melodies he creates that just stick in your head forever," Swift wrote on social media. "I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight."
While best known for more rap-focused songs, Post Malone is clearly making the rounds in the pop music scene, having also recently collaborated with Noah Kahan on "Dial Drunk." But his back-to-back appearances on arguably two of the biggest albums from pop artists this year raise the questions: Is Post Malone becoming a pop girlie? Is he just having a moment? Or is it all of the above?
There's a book about Swift's impact headed to bookshelves
Rolling Stone writer and music historian Rob Sheffield's book "Heartbreak Is the National Anthem: How Taylor Swift Reinvented Pop Music" will debut Nov. 12.
He's expected to dive further into Swiftâs music and fan connection.
Swifties are celebrating with their own listening parties
Many Swifties are sharing their elaborate party setups online as they prepare to celebrate the album release at home.
Karen Rothdeutsch, 25, has decked out her bedroom in upstate New York with âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ-themed decorations, complete with a platter of homemade cupcakes decorated to match Swiftâs various vinyl variants.
âI just made my space a little more immersive for my first listen,â Rothdeutsch told NBC News. âIâll be sitting in my bed with a box of tissues and a notebook, writing down my thoughts and probably checking into Twitter every so often to see what everybodyâs thinking about it.â
She said she procured the decorations over the course of several weeks, but the whole setup cost her less than $100. While she decorates on a budget, she said she did splash out on the vinyl variants and collectorâs edition CDs.
Swift's new album is already breaking a Spotify record
Spotify said on X that the âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ became the most pre-saved album countdown page in the streaming serviceâs history.
Since its launch on March 28, TTPD's countdown page has ticked down to the albumâs drop, now just hours away.
Was Swift's Grammys dress a 'Fortnight' Easter egg?
The white gown Swift wore to the 2024 Grammys, where she announced "The Tortured Poets Department," appears to have been an Easter egg.
Swift appears to be wearing a very similar dress in the teaser for the "Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)" music video, which will debut 8 p.m. ET tomorrow.
Swift was also pictured hugging Post Malone at the ceremony. Some fans online pointed out a similar shot of the two singers that appears in the teaser for the music video.
Swift drops 'Fortnight' music video teaser
Swift blessed fans with a teaser for âFortnight (feat. Post Malone)," the album's first single.
"At this hearing, I stand before my fellow members of The Tortured Poets Department with a summary of my findings. Album tonight. Fortnight music video tomorrow at 8pm et," Swift wrote in a post on X , which was accompanied by a short video clip.
The black-and-white teaser gave a sneak peak of the visuals for the music video. It's a combination of dramatic period gowns and a bleak medical setting in this supercut that is reminiscent of "Poor Things," which Swift's longtime friend Emma Stone recently won the best actress Oscar for.
Swift had announced she'd be dropping a music video at 8 p.m. ET tomorrow by sharing a âTTPD Timetableâ on her Instagram page this week.
Merch is here â and already selling out
Hours before the albumâs release, themed merchandise for âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ is now available to order online.
The merch drop includes hoodies, crewnecks and gold jewelry branded with the albumâs logo. A display case for the album vinyls seemingly sold out within minutes.
ICYMI: The Eras Tour concert film is on Disney+
In case you need something to do as you count down to the new album, âTaylor Swift: The Eras Tourâ is on Disney+. Swift announced the film would be available for streaming in February.
The film features all songs from the three Los Angeles tour dates during which it was filmed at SoFi Stadium. They include âcardigan,â as well as four additional acoustic surprise songs from the tour: âI Can See You,â âMaroon,â âYou Are in Loveâ and âDeath by a Thousand Cuts.â
Swifties online are freaking out over purported âleaksâ
The internet was at it again this week, with some online circulating what they said were leaks of Swift's new album. It is unclear from where and when the apparent leaks originated, but one Reddit thread is already filled with commentary.
As early as Tuesday, "taylor swift leak" appeared to be blocked from searches on X. Instead, when a user tried to search the phrase, a blank page popped up with the message, "Something went wrong. Try reloading."
The secret message has been decoded
The sixth and final word of the secret message, âmortem,â was revealed today, hidden in the lyrics of the song âBegin Again.â
The complete secret message is: âWe hereby conduct this post mortem.â
In a collaboration with Apple Music, Swift sorted some of her existing songs into thematic playlists , along with audio messages from her.
The messages seemed to confirm some fansâ theories that the playlists mirrored the five stages of grief â denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance â indicating that the new album may grapple with grief or loss. Swift later used a song from each playlist to reveal a hidden word on Apple Music every day leading up to the release of âThe Tortured Poets Department.â
Swift sets fans loose on an international puzzle
Swifties had a big day yesterday after murals with QR codes were unveiled in cities around the world, including Mexico City, Paris and Chicago.
Fans stumbled upon the murals, which Swift had not announced, and scanned them to find a link to a YouTube Shorts video. Every mural had a unique code that led to a different video, each revealing a new letter as part of a word puzzle.
Fans came together online to help decode the puzzle, which seemed to hint at the new album's first track, because it spelled out "for a fortnight."
Swifties in Los Angeles flock to Spotify pop-up library
Many Los Angeles Swifties celebrated the new album with a pop-up library installation in partnership with Spotify.
The three-day event, which runs through today at The Grove, featured a sneak peek at some of the album's lyrics.
Fans posted videos of themselves lined up for hours to get a glimpse at the installation.
A manuscript was front and center at the installation, revealing new lyrics periodically as the pages were turned over the course of three days.
Many fans online tried to identify other potential Easter eggs in the pop-up library, such as a bust of a peace sign, quill and fountain pens and a globe that appeared to be pointing to Florida, the name of a track on the album.
Why is the album called 'The Tortured Poets Department'?
Fans were quick to note that âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ is the longest title for a Taylor Swift album by a large margin, a distinction previously held by her third album, "Speak Now." Before "TTPD," "Speak Now" was her only album title consisting of more than one word.
Speculation surrounding the new album and its uncharacteristic title has primarily revolved around Swiftâs 2023 breakup  with British actor Joe Alwyn after their six-year relationship.
After the album announcement, a 2022 Variety interview  between Alwyn and Paul Mescal resurfaced on X. The pair revealed in the interview that they were both members of a WhatsApp group chat titled the Tortured Man Club, prompting some fans to draw parallels  between Alwyn and Swiftâs upcoming album.
The true meaning of âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ remains to be seen, but the album's rollout has featured references to famous poems like Charles Baudelaireâs âThe Albatross,â among other literary references.
Clues keep coming
Speculation continues to grow over clues for lyrics, song titles and the albumâs first music video.
Not much from Miss Swift so far
It's been a notably quiet rollout for "The Tortured Poets Department."
No themed Instagram grid overhaul, no lead singles, not even a cryptic calendar leading Swifties on wild goose chases for potential Easter eggs.
A week before the release, Taylor Swift was rocking out at Coachella instead of feeding her fans who are desperate for a hint of what's to come.
Aside from a hand-painted QR code on the side of a building in Chicago, a planned exhibit at The Grove in Los Angeles in partnership with Spotify and a quick video released Tuesday that appears to leave the "Midnights" era in the dust as viewers tour The Tortured Poets Department, Swift has been silent on what we can expect.
In the video , posted to her Instagram account, we did get a glimpse of a schedule that only showed release day, and on it, the promise of a music video on Friday at 8 p.m. ET. Fourteen tick marks beneath led some to think the music video could be for the 14th track on the album, or for the leading song, "Fortnight," since a fortnight is 14 days.
Swifties believing in the latter theory proved to be correct. Swift announced that the music video would be for "Fortnight" in a Thursday afternoon social media post.
Swifties online continue to grasp for any details to try to figure out what this mastermind might have in store for her beloved fan base.
What songs are on the new album?
Here's what songs are on the track list.
- "Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)"
- "The Tortured Poets Department"
- "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys"
- "So Long, London"
- "But Daddy I Love Him"
- "Fresh Out the Slammer"
- "Florida!!! (Florence + the Machine)"
- "Guilty as Sin?"
- "Whoâs Afraid of Little Old Me?"
- "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)"
- "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart"
- "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived"
- "The Alchemy"
- "Clara Bow"
Swift has also announced four bonus tracks: "The Manuscript," âThe Bolter,â âThe Albatrossâ and âThe Black Dog.â Each bonus track will be available on a separate vinyl variant and won't be on the streaming version of the album.
When does 'The Tortured Poets Department' drop?
Swift's 11th studio album, "The Tortured Poets Department," will be released Friday at 12 a.m. ET, or 9 p.m. PT.
It will be available for purchase on vinyl, on cassette, as a digital album and in CD form. It will also be on several streaming services, including Spotify and Apple Music.
But if you plan to stream âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ right after its release, be prepared for potential delays. When Swiftâs most recent brand-new album, âMidnights,â was released, Spotify briefly crashed  because of intense demand.

Taylor Swift fans speculate her songs are about Matty Healy and Joe Alwyn – who are they?
By Caitlin O'Kane
April 19, 2024 / 1:21 PM EDT / CBS News
Taylor Swift dropped her highly-anticipated "The Tortured Poets Department" on Friday and at 2 a.m. the star surprised fans by dropping an additional 15 tracks, calling it a "double album." Fans furiously began dissecting the lyrics of the songs, trying to discern who they were about. Many speculate most songs are about her recent exes, Matt Healy and Joe Alwyn. Who are they?
Who is Joe Alwyn?
Alwyn, a 33-year-old British actor, and Swift began dating in 2016 and broke up last year while she was on her Eras tour. He is known for films like the Oscar-nominated "The Favourite" and "Mary Queen of Scots."
Swift, known for writing songs about her high-profile relationships and giving fans Easter eggs as to who they are about, has admitted to writing songs about Alwyn before. In 2022, she told Entertainment Tonight that the song "Lavender Haze" from her album "Midnights" is about wanting to stay in the "lavender haze" feeling you have when you're in love – even when it's made difficult.
"Like my relationship for six years, we've had to dodge weird rumors, tabloid stuff and we just ignore it. This song is sort of about the act of ignoring that stuff to protect the real stuff," she said.
Alwyn has even contributed to Swift's albums before, under the pseudonym William Bowery, ET reports. He is credited in the track "Sweet Nothing" on "Midnights" as well as several songs on "Folklore and "Evermore," her two 2020 albums.
Swift confirmed in her documentary "Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions" that Alwyn was on those albums. He contributed to the songs "Exile," "Betty," "Champagne Problems," "Coney Island" and "Evermore" and even won a Grammy for his work.
Alwyn lives in London, so fans speculate her track "So Long To London" on "The Tortured Poets Department" is about their breakup.
After her public feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West in 2016, Swift "moved to a foreign country," she told Time Magazine during her "Person of the Year" cover interview last year. "I didn't leave a rental house for a year. I was afraid to get on phone calls." These feelings are reflected in the lyrics of the song.
Several songs on the new album are about a difficult breakup, including "Down Bad," "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys," "Fresh Out the Slammer," and " Fortnite," which features Post Malone.
Who is Matty Healy?
Healy is a member of the band 1975. He and Swift have supported each other's music throughout the years – with the pop star attending one of his concerts in 2014.
Romance rumors swirled then, and Healy said in a 2016 interview with Q Magazine that he had a "flirtation" with Swift, which gained him news coverage, but that she "wasn't a big impact" on his life, ET reports.
Healy once wore a t-shirt promoting Swift's 1989 album during a concert and Swift was photographed wearing a 1975 shirt.
When "Midnights" came out in 2021, Healy admitted his band recorded a song with Swift for the album but it didn't make the cut.
Then, about a month after her breakup with Alwyn, Healy attended the Eras tour in May 2023, and the pair were photographed holding hands. They were spotted together several times, but called it quits in June, ET reports.
Fans speculate her song new, "Fortnight," is about Healy because of the several blatant references to their mutual friends.
"Sometimes I wonder if you're gonna screw this up with me, But you told Lucy you'd kill yourself if I ever leave," she sings, seemingly referring to Lucy Dacus, a member of the band Boygenius.
"And I had said that to Jack about you so I felt seen, Everyone we know understands why it's meant to be," she sings in another verse, seemingly referring to her frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, who helped Swift and Healy reconnect, a source told ET.
Travis Kelce
After her brief relationship with Healy, Swift began dating Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce after he attended an Eras tour concert. Their relationship soon became a massive spectacle, with fans and media following their every move.
Swift was first seen at a Chiefs game in September 2023 and attended several other games, often bringing celebrity friends. There was much fanfare over her attendance at the Super Bowl, which the team won . She is even attributed with boosting sales of Kelce's jersey.
Fans speculate her new song "Alchemy" is about Kelce because the love song includes many subtle football references.
"So when I touch down, call the amateurs and cut 'em from the team," she sings.
Swift and Kelce often travel to be together and "touch down" could be a play-on-words for a football touchdown.
"These blokes warm the benches, we've been on a winning streak," she sings in another line.
"Where's the trophy? He just comes runnin' over to me," is a line that fans speculate is about Swift and Kelce embracing after his Super Bowl win.
Kim Kardashian
On "The Tortured Poets Department," there is a song called "thanK you aIMee" – stylized so the letters KIM are capitalized. Fans believe this is a blatant reference to Kim Kardashian.
Aside from referencing a "bronze spray-tanned statue," which likely refers to spray tan fan Kardashian, Swift appears to sing about the fallout after her feud with Kardashian and Kanye West, the rapper known as Ye.
Ever since Ye interrupted Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs, there has been tension between the artists that seems to have never gone away.
When Ye released a song that referenced Swift in 2016, Swift claimed she was not OK with the lyrics. But Kardashian released audio from a phone call between Swift and Ye during which Swift appears to give the rapper her blessing to mention her in the song.
"All that time you were throwin' punches, it was all for nothin'," Swift sings in "thanK you aIMee."
"I wrote a thousand songs that you find uncool, I built a legacy, which you can't undo, But when I count the scars, there's a moment of truth, That there wouldn't be this if there hadn't been you," she sings in another song.
The three appeared to have mended their rift several times, with Ye sending Swift flowers and Kardashian and Swift seen dancing during a Ye performance at an awards show. But the feud was seen to have damaged Swift's reputation – and fans believe her album "Reputation" was inspired by the fallout. In her Time interview, Swift called the scandal "a career death."

Swifties Trying to Rewrite History and Make Taylor Swiftâs â1989â About Matty Healy May Have Lost the Plot
Following the release of The Tortured Poets Department , some Taylor Swift fans are speculating that her sixth studio album, 1989, may actually be about Matty Healy — and we’re afraid they may have lost the plot entirely.
Beloved Swifties, we appreciate your prowess, but 1989 has and always will be dedicated to Mr. Harry Styles (allegedly). Although it’s understandable that TTPD has caused many to reevaluate some of Swift’s more recent work, including 2022’s Midnights , rewriting history to make a record so specific to Styles about someone else simply doesn’t make a ton of sense.
Before we dive into the reasons it’s a no, here are the three things fans are attempting to harp on when it comes to 1989 . Many believe lyrics in “Style,” particularly “You’ve got that long hair slicked back / White T-shirt” apply to Healy’s 2014 performance vibe, while others think Swift’s silhouette being featured in both the “Style” and “Fortnight” — a TTPD song rumored to be about Healy — music videos is a deliberate parallel. On a bigger scale, some Swifties think because 1989 is about a delicate, on-and-off relationship — described in “OOTW,” “I Wish You Would” and “All You Had to Do Was Stay,” for example — it must trace back to Healy, since the Swift and The 1975 frontman met the same year the record was released.
Back to why this is wrong. Starting with the most obvious of evidence, Swift and Healy didn’t even meet until one month after 1989 was released. The twosome first crossed paths in November 2014 when Swift attended a The 1975 show alongside pals Ellie Goulding and Selena Gomez . Healy later opened up about being introduced to the pop star while on the Australian radio program Shazam Top 20, where he admitted the duo exchanged numbers.

If how time works isn’t enough proof, there’s always the fact that one of Swift’s singles on the album is literally titled Style, using wordplay to compare the duo’s on-and-off romance, which lasted from 2012 to 2014, to clothing and fashion that “never goes out of style.”
Although Swift never actually names names in her songs — except she kind of does in this one, right? — she also didn’t try to hide her inspiration for “Style” when discussing it in a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone , telling the outlet, “We should have just called [the song], ‘I’m Not Even Sorry.'”
Styles, for his part, wrote “Two Ghosts” in 2017, which many believe is a response to Swift’s track. “Same lips red / Same eyes blue / Same white shirt / Couple more tattoos,” he sings in the first verse, likely in response to Swift’s “I got that red lip classic thing that you like” and “You got that long hair, slicked back, white T-shirt” lyrics.
“Out of the Woods” is another 1989 track that clearly belongs to Styles, as it references his and Swift’s infamous snowmobile accident that resulted in both of them going to the hospital, with Styles getting “20 stitches.”
Though she didn’t name Styles at the time, Swift later confirmed to Rolling Stone that the song was about the crash, telling the outlet she wasn’t hurt in the incident before correcting herself, saying, ”Not as hurt.’” When asked why nobody has ever leaked information about the accident, she added: ”You know what I’ve found works even better than an NDA? Looking someone in the eye and saying, ‘Please don’t tell anyone about this.'”
When the music video for “OOTW” dropped in 2015, Swift was featured lost in a snowy woods in a blue dress. The garment was a callback to her and Styles’ breakup in January 2013, when they called it quits while vacationing in the Virgin Islands following a “heated argument.” Swift reportedly cut her trip short and headed home to Nashville to begin rehearsing for her Red tour and was photographed leaving the resort on a boat while donning a blue dress.
Swift can also be seen wearing the necklace of a paper airplane gifted to her by Styles in both the “OOTW” and “Style” videos. The jewelry is referenced in the “OOTW” lyric, “Two paper airplanes flying.”
Swift and Styles’ beachside breakup also came back into play for Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) , which she released in October 2023 with a series of bonus Vault Tracks. In “ Is It Over Now? ” Swift calls back to multiple other 1989 songs, singing, “Blue Dress / On a boat.” The snowmobile accident also ties in, with the lyrics, “Red blood / White snow.”
“Now That We Don’t Talk,” another track off 1989 (Taylor’s Version) , also seems to Styles hanging out on boats with his One Direction bandmates following their breakup with the line, “Now I don’t have to pretend I like acid rock / Or that I like to be on a mega yacht / With important men who think important thoughts.”
“Slut!,” meanwhile, touches on the idea of being judged for a public romance as a woman while the man skates by. Swift and Styles were infamously photographed together everywhere they went, with Swift taking a lot of heat from One Direction fans.

“Send the code, he’s waiting there / The sticks and stones they throw froze mid-air,” she sings in the second verse. “Everyone wants him, that was my crime / The wrong place at the right time.”
If Healy was an on-and-off love for Swift since 2014, they certainly kept it under wraps, but Swift has all but confirmed that was the case when it came to Styles. During an interview on The Morning Show i n December 2014, Swift confessed that much of 1989 , but “Style” in particular, is about a romance you can’t seem to get over. (While there could be something to Swift having similar feelings about Healy since they rekindled things in 2023, she’d have to have a look into the future to be speaking about Healy then.)
“‘Style’ is actually about those relationships that are never really done ,” she explained. “You always kind of have that one person who you feel like might interrupt your wedding and be like, ‘Don’t do it, we’re not over yet.’ I think everybody has that one person who kind of floats in and out of their life and the narrative is never truly over.”
Swift has touched on this concept with her other records, most notably Folklore’s “The 1” and Midnights’ “Question,” which directly samples from “OOTW.” While Swift did perform “Question” while dating Healy at her May 2023 Eras Tour show, the song likely was originally penned with Styles in mind. Swift sings about a time when her ex saw her in a “crowded room” with “some meathead guy,” which could callback to Styles standing on stage at the 2017 Billboard Awards and seeing Swift kiss then-boyfriend Calvin Harris .

As for Styles himself, the musician has all but confirmed many of Swift’s 1989 tracks are about him. When asked his feelings on being the rumored subject of her music during a 2014 Google hangout , he said, “We always say that we write from personal experience, and I think everyone does. So, it would be hypocritical to say ‘Oh, you can’t write songs.’ And she’s really good, so, they’re good songs. I’m really lucky in that sense.”

During a Rolling Stone interview three years later, Styles expanded on his thoughts, but did note that he can’t be sure the songs are 100 percent about him.
“I’m lucky if everything [we went through] helped create those songs,” he said. “That’s what hits your heart. That’s the stuff that’s hardest to say, and it’s the stuff I talk least about. That’s the part that’s about the two people.”

'Tortured Poets' release live updates: Taylor Swift drops 15 extra songs at 2 a.m.
Tick. Tick. Tick. When the clock struck midnight (ET), a meeting of "The Tortured Poets Department" was called to order. Then it was extended at 2 a.m.
Taylor Swift released her 11th era album on Friday ushering in new poetry with dagger-to-the heart ballads and fresh bops. And it included 31 songs altogether after she made a surprise annoucement of 15 extra tracks under the banner "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology."
As the meeting got underway, the sepia toned department was abuzz, which is why reporters Austin Curtright (a sports reporter and Swiftie) and Bryan West (the full-time Taylor Swift reporter) are collecting highlights for the department's minutes complete with all of the information you need to know about the new album.
Grab your quills, typewriters and parchment as we dive into the highly anticipated new album âThe Tortured Poets Department.â
Travis Kelce is 'So High School'
"You know how to ball, I know Aristotle, brand new, full throttle," Swift sings on track 22. "Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto. It's true, swear, scouts honor. You knew what you wanted, and, boy, you got her."
It's a real-life rom com playing out on a football field. From the 13 games Swift has attended including the Super Bowl to the three countries outside the U.S. that Kelce has seen the Eras Tour : Argentina, Australia and Singapore. The love story has played out in front of millions of spectators.
"Are you gonna marry, kiss or kill me? Kill me. It's just a game, but really, really, I'm betting on all three for us two," Swift sings. It's a nod to a video that resurfaced of Kelce being asked by The Messenger the exact question. He says he would marry Katy Perry and kiss Taylor Swift. (Ariana Grande got the ax.)
Does 'The Anthology' have songs about Kim Kardashian?
In classic Swift fashion, she got creative with her capital letters on "thanK you aIMee," a song about a mean schoolgirl. Or is it? The "KIM" most often associated with Swift is Kim Kardashian , who famously referred to Swift with a snake emoji. (Speaking of which, there are several mentions of snakes on "Cassandra.")
Swift referenced her feud with Kardashian in her Time person of the year interview.
"You have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar," she said. "That took me down psychologically to a place I've never been before. I moved to a foreign country. I didn't leave a rental house for a year. I was afraid to get on phone calls. I pushed away most people in my life because I didn't trust anyone anymore. I went down really, really hard."
'The Black Dog' is a real bar
In this song, Swift refers to a bar, the "Black Dog," that she notices her ex going to one night. He has forgotten to stop sharing his location. Something so trivial invokes incredible sadness and thoughts of comparison, maybe jealousy. Swift writes an invented narrative that the ex is meeting a new girl who won't understand the starting line of a song because she's too young. Part of the lyrics are, "I move through the world with a heart broken. My longings stay unspoken, and I may never open up the way I did for you."
The Black Dog is a London pub located at: 112 Vauxhall Walk, London SE11 5ER, United Kingdom .
The tender whimper on the last note captures perfectly the pangs of saying goodbye to a relationship.
15 extra songs drop at 2 a.m.
Of course, Swift stays keeping her fans on their toes. At 2 a.m. ET, two hours after the initial release of her newest album, Swift released 15 more songs to "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology," announcing it as a "secret double album."
"Iâd written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so hereâs the second installment of TTPD," she wrote on X.
Here are the 15 new tracks:
- "The Black Dog"
- "imgonnagetyouback"
- "The Albatross"
- "Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus"
- "How Did It End?"
- "So High School"
- "I Hate It Here"
- "thanK you aIMee"
- "I Look in Peopleâs Windows"
- "The Prophecy"
- "Cassandra"
- "The Bolter"
- "The Manuscript"
The best lines from 'Tortured Poets'
All's fair in love and poetry, but mostly poetry. Whether for captions, for comments or for referenced writings, here are some of the best lines when it comes to Taylor Swift's 11th era album : "The Tortured Poets Department." Let the lyrical games begin.
Could 'The Alchemist' be about Travis Kelce?
Could the second-to-last song of Taylor Swift's new album, "The Alchemist," be about her current love interest, Travis Kelce?
The song has the lyric, "Where's the trophy? He just comes, running over to me," which could be in reference to Kelce winning the Super Bowl last season with the Kansas City Chiefs. After the win, Kelce met Swift on the field at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, where the couple shared an intense moment together.
Jack Antonoff 'overwhelmed'
Frequent Taylor Swift collaborator Jack Antonoff, who's one co-writer of "The Tortured Poets Department," shared his thoughts on album on X, formerly known as Twitter, shortly after its release:
"love this album more than i can say," he wrote. ".... love you all very much ... more later very overwhelmed ... love you taylor."
More news may be coming at 2 a.m. ET
Don't go to bed yet, Swifties. It seems as if another announcement is coming after the midnight release of "The Tortured Poets Department," as there's a countdown for 2 a.m. ET on Swift's Instagram account.Â
It could potentially be bonus songs, similar to how Swift rolled out extra songs for her last album, "Midnights." But who knows with Swift.
The countdown can be accessed by scrolling all the way up or down on Swift's Instagram page.
Track 5: 'So Long, London'
In a heartbreak letter to the English capital city Swift had called home, the singer says so long to London. The choice of this song for Track 5 on her new album "The Tortured Poets Department" is intentional. Throughout Swift's 11 eras, Track 5 is reserved for a special, vulnerable song.
âTrack five is kind of a tradition that really started with you guys," Swift said live on Instagram in July 2019 , "because I didnât realize I was doing this, but as I was making albums, I guess, I donât know why, but instinctively I was just kind of putting a very vulnerable, personal, honest, emotional song as Track 5."
âSo Long, Londonâ puts Swiftâs poetry prowess on display. Read more about the track.
'Tortured Poets,' track-by-track
âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ Â is an asylum full of dashed wedding hopes, cemeteries, drugs, lustful longing and heart-shattering tragedy.
Fans believed Taylor Swiftâs  new project would mirror âFolkloreâ  and âEvermore,â but they didnât anticipate the newest music being dressed in synths similar to the vault tracks of â1989 (Taylorâs Version).â  You can definitely hear the influence of co-writers, co-producers and close friends Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff .
If the singerâs 250+ song discography were a card catalog, you could track sounds and themes here that run parallel to hits from other eras. Call it the âTaylor Swiftâ decimal system, and read all about it.
'Florida!!!' is 'one hell of a drug'
The only song in Taylor Swift's discography to include three exclamation points, "Florida!!!" is one of two collaborations on "The Tortured Poets Department.â
Swift teams up with Florence + The Machine for Track 8. Swift's dad, Scott, told fans in Florida, the song about the state was his favorite off the album. Cue the drums, bum-bum-bum-bum-bum.

Taylor Swift shares message after release of 'The Tortured Poets Department'
Swift explained the meaning of her new album shortly after its midnight release. Here's what she said:
"The Tortured Poets Department. An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time â one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure. This period of the authorâs life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up.Â
"There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it. And then all thatâs left behind is the tortured poetry."
Taylor Swift name-drops Patti Smith and Dylan Thomas on new song. Hereâs why
The chorus of the title track mentions two literary legends and one of the places that connects them: Patti Smith, Dylan Thomas and the Chelsea Hotel.
Swift sings in âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ: âI laughed in your face and said, âYouâre not Dylan Thomas. Iâm not Patti Smith. This ainât the Chelsea Hotel. Weâre modern idiots.â
Dylan Thomas is a Welsh poet and writer famous for " Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night ,â âUnder Milk Woodâ and âFern Hill.â Thomas was born in 1914 and died in 1953.
Patti Smith is a famous poet, author, songwriter, singer and painter born in 1947. Her Instagram bio  reads, âWriter. We are all alive together.â Smith is still an active writer. She did a book signing in New York City Thursday morning.
The Chelsea Hotel (or Hotel Chelsea or The Chelsea) is in Manhattan. Built in the late 19th century, the 12-story hotel is a New York designated landmark that has famously housed writers, painters, authors and the whoâs who of fashionable socialites. And still does.
Stephanie Burt, a Harvard professor who teaches a class on Swift, explained the layers of the lyric.
âI Can Do It With a Broken Heartâ is quintessential Taylor
âI Can Do it With a Broken Heartâ is so quintessentially Taylor , writes national music writer Melissa Ruggieri.
With fluttering synths and an electro-pop beat, itâs structured as one of Swiftâs trademark glistening pop gems. But in the lyrics, Swift travels through the most potent psychological exploration of âthe show must go onâ since Smokey Robinson and The Miracles described â The Tears of a Clown â in 1967.
USA TODAY reviews âTortured Poetsâ
These 16 tracks of pensive pop, out now, are the antithesis to âLover.â Heartbreak and misery wrapped in melody. Rainbows faded into sepia tone. An era endured not enjoyed.
National music writer Melissa Ruggieri breaks down how Swift pulls listeners into the depths of misery catalyzed by a public breakup while she staged the biggest concert tour in history.
Ruggieri also reveals that "TTPD" is bookended with a prologue â a poem by Stevie Nicks â and an epilogue framed as Swiftâs summary report as the chairman of The Tortured Poets Department (Chaos, âleads the caged beast to do the most curious things,â she writes).

Taylor Swift, Post Malone recreate 2019 AMAs hug in 'Fortnight' music video
Turns out, Post Malone has been a part of "The Tortured Poets Department" long before the album's release, as Swift and Malone recreated their famous hug at the 2019 American Music Awards in the sneak peek of the music video "Fortnight," a single from Swift's new album that features Malone.Â
Track lengths in order of longest to shortest
Spotify announced the track lengths a week before the release. Bonus songs were not included.

- "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys" 3:23

Five writers credited on the album
Per usual, Taylor Swift is credited as a composer on all 16 tracks. Two she did by herself: "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys" and "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" Austin Post (Post Malone) helped with the song he is featured on, "Fortnight," and Florence Welch (Florence + The Machine) is credited on "Florida!!!"
Jack Antonoff, a co-producer of Swift's since her "1989" album, is credited on eight titles: "Fortnight," "The Tortured Poets Department," "Down Bad," "Fresh Out The Slammer," "Guilty As Sin?," "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)," "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" and "The Alchemy."
Aaron Dessner, a co-producer of Swift's since "Folklore," is credited on five tracks: "So Long, London," "But Daddy I Love Him," "loml," "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" and "Clara Bow."
Credits for the bonus tracks have not yet been released.
Easter egg clues hiding in plain sight
Hours before the Grammys, TaylorSwift.com âcrashedâ showing an âError 321 Backend fetch failed.â Error 321 is a communication error that would appear on a fax machine with a poor telephone line connection. Below, âhneriergrd:â appeared to be an unscrambled version of âred herring,â which is a clue or piece of information intended to be misleading or distracting. And underneath that was âDPT: 123.â DPT backwards is TPD, "Tortured Poets Department."
Misheard lyrics: 10 funniest mix-ups from 'Blank Space' to 'Cruel Summer'
Even the most ardent Swiftie can hear a lyric incorrectly, and, as the self-deprecating among us tend to do, can laugh (or would it be shake?) it off.
Maybe you still think Swift is singing about âStarbucks loversâ in âBlank Spaceâ or her âgood girl faceâ in âStyle.â Or maybe you learned you were singing some of her lyrics incorrectly from watching The Eras Tour movie with subtitles.
Given Swiftâs vast catalog â and her penchant for lyrical loquaciousness â there is a lot of room for error. From USA TODAY music writer Melissa Ruggieri, here are 10 of our favorite mondegreens (the official term for misheard lyrics).
Who could the new songs be about?
Swift, who has released some iconic for breakup anthems over the years, hasn't explained â and likely never will â the real-life inspirations behind some of her heartbreaking songs. However, assuming at least some of the songs from "Tortured Poets" have meaning derived from her love life, Swift's 11th album could include songs about three recent love interests.
Swift has dated, or been connected with, three people since the release of her last album "Midnights": actor Joe Alwyn, musician Matty Healy and current boyfriend Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Deciding which, if any, she sings about will be for the lyric-analyzing Swifties to decipher.
All 11 of Taylor Swift's No. 1 songs, ranked
In anticipation of â The Tortured Poets Department ,â USA TODAY music writer Melissa Ruggieri ranked Swiftâs 11 No. 1 hits (and yes, she probably would appreciate the numerical symmetry to her new album).
Swift drops merch, sneak peek of âFortnightâ video
Just hours before the release of the album Swift officially released merch for it.
Along with the merch drop, Swift also released a sneak peek of the music video for "Fortnight," the first single on her album that features Post Malone. The post on X, formerly known as Twitter, noted the music video will release at 8 p.m. ET on Friday.
"At this hearing, I stand before my fellow members of The Tortured Poets Department with a summary of my findings," the post read. "Album tonight. Fortnight music video tomorrow at 8pm et."
Swift starred alongside Malone in the snippet of her upcoming music video for "Fortnight," which means 14 days or two weeks of time.
Swift's merch includes an assortment of clothing, along with multiple pieces of jewelry and a "The Tortured Poets Department" vinyl case. Each item features the albumâs âTTPDâ logo.
'Fortnight' with Post Malone to be first single
The opening chapter to "Tortured Poets" is the lead single.
Swift shared the news on Instagram at 2 p.m. ET that her collaboration with Post Malone  will hit radio stations. "Fortnight" will also be the music video that airs Friday night at 8 p.m. ET.
"The first single from The Tortured Poets Department isâŚâŚâŚâŚ. Fortnight featuring @postmalone  đ¤," Swift said on Instagram. "Iâve been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation and those melodies he creates that just stick in your head forever. I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight. Honestly canât wait for you guys to hear this song at Midnight TONIGHT and see the video at 8pm ET TOMORROW."
Announcing Swift's newest chapter
Swift announced her new project at the Grammys after her 13th career win.
"I want to say thank you to the fans," Swift said holding her Grammy for pop vocal album, "by telling you a secret that I've been keeping from you for the past two years, which is that my brand-new album comes out April 19."
The first bonus track announced was "The Manuscript." Two weeks later onstage in Melbourne, Australia, Swift announced a second variant including the bonus track "The Bolter." The following week she unveiled a third variant in Sydney, Australia, with the bonus track "The Albatross." And in Singapore, she revealed a fourth variant called "The Black Dog."

A Dull Tour Of Moscow âIn Car 141
By Theodore Shabad Special to The New York Times
- April 3, 1972
MOSCOW, April 3âA twohour tour in a police patrol car through a quiet Moscow residential neighborhood can be a dull affair.
On a recent evening, as Car 141 of the 109th Precinct moved at 15 miles an hour through the broad, virtually deserted streets of the Sokol district of northwest Moscow, there were no idle youths lurking in doorways, no street fights, no automobile accidents.
âWe are on the lookout mainly for drunks and other potential troublemakers,â said Lieut. Col. Aleksandr F. Petrikov, a borough police official who accompanied a visitor on the inspection tour.
With them in the back seat of the police car was a reporter from Novosti press agency, which had arranged the ride as part of a briefing on the Moscow police, or the Militia as it is known here.
Shops Are Checked
The senior patrolman, First Sgt. Sergei I. Zimin, 50 years old, scanned the large apartment blocks on both sides of the road for any indications of trouble. All was quiet.
From time to time, the driver, Sgt. Viktor A. Shelgunov, 37, brought the car to a halt at designated stopping places. While he stayed near the car to listen for radio ;calls, his colleague walked about for a. few minutes to check shops and other establishments.
âSee how he looks right and left,â Colonel Petrikov said, keeping up a running commentary. âHe looks at every house to make sure all is quiet. If anything ever happens, he can immediately call in either of the two other cars we have patrolling in this area.â
The patrolmen kept a particularly vigilant eye on the few cafes and restaurants along the route. These are points of particular concern to the Moscow police in their fight against drunkenness and the wide range of petty crime that goes under the heading of hooliganism.
Streets Considered Safe
Moscow does not appear to be troubled with muggings, assaults and similar forms of street crime that pose a problem in New York, for example. Although the Soviet press does not report crime except on a selective basis, there appears to be a consensus among Muscovites that their streets are generally safe at night.
Most Soviet citizens have jobs, with women making up half of the labor force, and the earlyâtoâbed and earlyâtorise habits appear to be a significant factor in keeping people off the streets late at night.
It was 9 P.M. as the police car cruised through the Sokol neighborhood, and the few persons who were on the street seemed to be on their way home. ,
Long silences on the car radio linking the patrol car with the precinct house were punCtuated by occasional test calls.
âBelgorod,â Sergeant Zimin said in a quiet voice, âThis is 141. Do you read me? Over.â
â141, this is Belgorod. I read you,â came the sonorous reply from the station house, using the name of a Russian city as its call sign.
Finally there was a call for â help, and Car 141 sped off to the address. A group of citizen policemen patrolling on foot had detained two young men on the complaint of a young woman.
Wanted to Get Acquaintedâ
âThey tried to take my hand,â the woman said.
âWe did not mean any harm, we just wanted to get acquainted,â one of the two sought to explain. The other appeared to be too frightened to talk.
Although the young woman declined to press charges, the two patrolmen drove the youths to the precinct house while the visitors waited at a street corner.
âThey will probably Just check out their identity, place of employment and so forth,â Colonel Petrikov explained.
âWe are strong on crime prevention here, and any in cident like this is reported to the employer and coâworkers. They will see to it that it does not recur.â
The evening operation at the 109th Precinct appeared to be limited to its three car patrols.
Asked whether foot patrolmen were used in the area in addition to the citizen volunteers, Colonel Petrikov said, âWhat for, there would be nothing for them to do.â
A tour of the station house revealed mainly neat and empty offices, a room for briefings, lectures and social events and a weapons room in which a sandâfilled panel along a wall bore a sign reading, âPoint your gun here when loading and unloading.â
Colonel Petrikov said that each precinct had a resident officer who was charged with public relations, lectures in community centers and schools and informal followups of minor incidents.

Paramore's Hayley Williams Is 'So Ready' for Eras Tour Amid Taylor Swift's 'Impressive' 'TTPD' Album Release
Hayley Williams is ready to hit the road with longtime pal, Taylor Swift ! The Paramore frontwoman gushed over Swift's new album, The Tortured Poets Department , while offering a tease of the band's upcoming Eras Tour run.
The 35-year-old musician took to her Instagram Story on Monday, after enjoying an electric Record Store Day over the weekend, to share a handful of her current favorite albums. Unsurprisingly, Swift's TTPD made the list.
"Had me from the storytelling alone, my friend," Williams wrote. "Every one of us knows this kind of grief! It's so impressive to me how specific and colorful Taylor's words get without ever losing the universal thread. I'm so ready to be tour-mates."
Also receiving honorable mentions from Williams were BeyoncĂŠ 's Cowboy Carter , Brittany Howard's What Now , Rufus Wainwright's Want One , Bee Gees' Main Course , Tierra Whack's World Wide Whack , Radiohead's The Bends , The Smile's Wall of Eyes , Blonde Redhead's Sit Down for Dinner and Idles' Tangk .
Paramore is set to open for Swift on her Eras Tour when it resumes on May 9 in Paris, France. The band will continue to tour with her through her remaining international tour dates, which includes a whopping eight shows at London's Wembley Stadium .
The dates come less than a year after Paramore's headlining This Is Why tour was derailed due to a lung infection for Williams. At the time, Williams shared with fans that she would be using her downtime to "dive head first into creating some better routines" and getting back into "the creative process."
"For me, when we get into this mode it always feels nice to disappear in a way," she admitted in a post on Discord . "Maybe this time I will be able to find balance between the disappearing and yet not completely shutting out the world. But probably not."
It was last summer that Swift, 34, announced that Williams' band would be joining her on the Eras Tour around the same time she dropped Speak Now (Taylor's Version) . On the rerecorded full-length, Williams is featured on the from-the-vault track, "Castles Crumbling."
"Really canât contain my excitement because⌠weâre adding 14 new shows to The Eras Tour," Swift shared in July 2023. "And I get to travel the world doing shows with Paramore!! Hayley and I have been friends since we were teens in Nashville and now we get to frolic around the UK/Europe next summer??? Iâm screaming???"
In a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show , Williams spilled details on how she and Swift first became friends back in 2008.
"Me and Taylor met because both of us -- Paramore and Taylor -- were nominated for Best New Artist the same year at the GRAMMYS," she said.
Though the late Amy Winehouse took the trophy that night, Williams and Swift ended up at the same after-party.
"We were at some GRAMMY party -- it was actually Timbaland's GRAMMY party. [It was] huge. I was very nervous," Williams recalled. "But a woman came up to me and she said, 'I'm Taylor Swift's mom and, you know, Taylor doesn't have a lot of friends her age that do music. And I would love to, like, you know, introduce you guys or get your number or whatever.'"
"So Andrea, the legend that she is, she connected us," Williams added, referencing Taylor's mom, Andrea Swift.
Swift's 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets D epartment , and its lead single, " Fortnight " featuring Post Malone , were released on Friday to much fanfare.
In terms of traditional album sales, Billboard reports that Swift's TTPD sold 1.4 million copies -- including CD, vinyl, cassette and digital download versions -- in its first day alone. This surpasses her own biggest sales week, when 1989 (Taylor's Version) sold 1.359 million copies. All signs indicate that TTPD will be making a massive, record-shattering debut when tracking for its first week concludes on Thursday, April 25.
The 31-track collection -- which turned out to be a surprise double album -- features a hefty helping of heartbreak songs following her splits from Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy , as well as a few sweet love songs amid her current relationship with Travis Kelce .
"She has put her heart and soul into the music, just like with everything she does," a source told ET about the album, "and can't wait for her fans to listen to it and to share it with them."
