The Best Machu Picchu Cruise Tours

celebrity cruise tour to machu picchu

Beyond Pisco sours and ceviche, what's the first thing you think of when you think of Peru? If you answered Machu Picchu, you'd be in good company. The country's most visited destination and the most important Incan archaeological site in the world is set on a high plateau amid the densely forested, mist-enshrouded mountains and valleys of inland southern Peru.

But, Machu Picchu is a long way from Lima -- more than 683 miles -- which is often the only port of call in Peru for cruises to South America. Even the most ambitious shore excursion can't cover that much ground in a day. Fortunately, for cruisers who don't want to miss Machu Picchu, several cruise lines offer cruises that include Machu Picchu as part of their South America and Galapagos itineraries.

Called cruise tours, these pre- or post-cruise land-based extensions take in Machu Picchu, Cusco and other highlights of the Sacred Valley, as the surrounding area is known. Take note: The journey is still a journey -- It involves flights to Cusco, transfers to points closer to Machu Picchu, buses, train rides or strenuous hikes up to the site, and walking into and around the site itself.

Check out some of the top South American and Galapagos cruises that include Machu Picchu, from familiar big-ship operators to smaller, boutique and ultra-luxe brands.

Celebrity Cruises: As part of its 14-night "Best of Chile & Peru" cruise on Celebrity Silhouette, Celebrity Cruises offer passengers a quick trip to Machu Picchu and Cusco. The ship docks for three nights in Lima, where the 72-hour Lost City of the Incas trip is an optional add-on. The express trip takes cruisers to their base at a five-star hotel in Cusco, from where they'll explore the Temple of the Sun and the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman -- both in Cusco -- followed by an ascent by train and exploration of Machu Picchu.

The cruise is round trip from San Antonio, Chile, and the Machu Picchu add-on is priced separately. Several 16-day Celebrity cruises to Galapagos and Machu Picchu combine 10 days' exploration of the Galapagos Islands with six days in Lima and the Sacred Valley.

Silversea Cruises: Ultra-luxury Silversea Cruises combines the Galapagos and Machu Picchu by offering four- or five-day explorations of Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley as pre- or post-cruise extensions to its San Cristobal to Baltra (Galapagos) itineraries. The five-day Machu Picchu extension includes touring Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Urubamba and Machu Picchu, with luxury accommodations and the journey to Machu Picchu aboard the Hiram Bingham -- named for the Yale University professor credited with discovering Machu Picchu --  or PeruRail's panoramic Vistadome train.

The Machu Picchu extensions are also offered with Silversea's 15-day sailings from Fort Lauderdale to Lima or vice versa on the Silver Moon, with stops in the Caribbean and a Panama Canal crossing.

Tauck : Group tour veterans Tauck offer a combined Machu Picchu and Galapagos cruise and land tour, meaning there's no additional cost for the land portion of your trip (all internal flights, excursions and most meals are included in the price). Its "Peru & the Galapagos Islands" and "Hidden Galapagos & Peru" trips start with six-night tours of Lima, Machu Picchu and Cusco, including accommodations in luxury Belmond hotels, followed by a six- or seven-night (respectively) cruise through the Galapagos Islands on small expedition ships.

Lindblad-National Geographic: Expedition-focused Lindblad-National Geographic cruises to the Galapagos and Machu Picchu allow travelers to spend nine days exploring the Galapagos Islands, followed by a week of immersion in Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. A highlight of the trip is an early-morning hike to watch the sunrise over the ruins of Machu Picchu. Accommodations include luxury Belmond hotels.

G Adventures: Specialists in small-group adventure travel, G Adventures offers a tempting duo of South American adventures -- a 10-day catamaran cruise of the Galapagos paired with a seven-day extension to explore Cusco and Machu Picchu. There are two options for the extension: the more strenuous "Inca Discovery" includes a four-day trek on the challenging Inca Trail, with overnight accommodations in tourist-class hotels. The "Machu Picchu in Style" trip includes train travel to Machu Picchu instead of the rigorous hike.

Both tours offer the chance to visit local artisan cooperatives and support sustainable tourism ventures on the ground. For travelers who book both the Galapagos cruise and the Machu Picchu extension, G Adventures will pay for the flight from Quito, Ecuador, to Lima.

Editor's Note : Viking Cruises will sail 13- and 15-day Galapagos sailings from Lima to Quito, including Machu Picchu, scheduled to set sail in 2021.

Princess Cruises: If you want to see Machu Picchu first and then relax into a nice long cruise, or cruise first and then tackle Machu Picchu, Princess Cruises' "Machu Picchu Explorer" offers both options. The 18-day cruises on Coral Princess either start in Los Angeles and end in Lima, or begin in Lima and continue through the Andes, around Cape Horn and on to Buenos Aires, Argentina. A six-night exploration of Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu includes a lot of time spent exploring Cusco and its surrounding archaeological sites.

Holland America Line: Instead of offering Machu Picchu as a pre- or post-cruise option, Holland America's Machu Picchu excursion happens mid-cruise, as part of its 17-Day "Inca and Panama Canal Discovery" itinerary aboard Zaandam. When the ship stops for two nights in Lima, passengers have the option of taking the two-night "Cusco & Machu Picchu Overland Adventure." The trip includes flights to/from Lima to Cusco, a train ride to Machu Picchu, tours and most meals.

Passengers then fly on to Trujillo, where they meet the ship at the port at Salaverry. The Machu Picchu excursion offers either standard accommodations or a deluxe package with five-star hotels and the ultra-luxe Belmond Hiram Bingham train to and from Machu Picchu.

Azamara: Small-ship cruise provider Azamara offers a six- or seven-night tour of Cusco and Machu Picchu that includes a transfer to the Incan site aboard Hiram Bingham train. Pre- or post-voyage tours depart from Lima and finish in Buenos Aires -- or vice versa -- and include five-star hotel stays, gourmet meals and tours. The trip is available as an add-on to several of Azamara's cruises in South America and Antarctica.

Related : South America Cruise Tips

Oceania Cruises: Premium cruise line Oceania offers a three-night Machu Picchu trip as a precursor to its 20-day cruises from Lima to Buenos Aires. The standard package includes one night in Lima and two nights in a five-star hotel in Cusco with a city tour, plus Vistadome train travel and transfers to Machu Picchu. The deluxe pre-tour adds round-trip travel to Machu Picchu on the luxury Hiram Bingham train.

Uniworld River Cruises: Uniworld makes its first foray into South America with a combined cruise and land-based journey through the Peruvian Amazon and the Sacred Valley aboard Aria Amazon. The 15-day trip begins in Lima, followed by a seven-night cruise through the Amazon rainforest. Included at the end of the cruise are four nights in the Sacred Valley, with visits to Machu Picchu and Cusco. Prices include return flights and a one-way upgrade to business class.

Avalon Waterways: Another company offering Machu Picchu and Amazon River tours, river cruise line Avalon Waterways offers several itineraries with Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley built in. Its 11-day "From the Inca Empire to the Peruvian Amazon" cruise and land-based tour starts in Lima and goes directly to Cusco for four nights. The trip includes an overnight near Machu Picchu and two full days spent touring the site.

Then, from Cusco, cruisers are flown to Lima and transferred to Iquitos, deep in the Peruvian Amazon. From there, passengers will transfer to Nauta for a five-night Amazon River cruise aboard the all-suite Delfin III. Avalon also offers an 18-day "Cruise to Machu Picchu and Galapagos."

Editor's Note : It's worth noting that while Norwegian Cruise Line offers South America sailings, the cruise line does not currently offer Machu Picchu cruise tours.

Be wary of high elevation. As you set off for your trip to the Sacred Valley, remember that the region is part of the Andes Mountains, meaning it's all at high elevation. Cusco itself is at 11,200 feet above sea level, while Machu Picchu is actually lower, at about 7,972 feet. Unless you already live at high elevation, your body will need time to acclimate to the change and you might exhibit symptoms of altitude sickness. These can include headache, dizziness, nausea and shortness of breath -- even short walks can leave healthy people gasping for air at these altitudes. If you have any concerns about your health and fitness for a high-elevation vacation, consult your doctor before booking your trip.

Dress for the weather. Due to its high elevation, Machu Picchu has relatively mild summer temperatures and its winters are chilly and frosty. (Remember that when it's winter in North America, it's summer in South Americaand vice versa.) In all seasons, you'll want to bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellant for your journey. Summer months (December to March) can be quite rainy, so pack a lightweight, waterproof jacket. In the dry winter months (June to August), you'll have cool weather and plenty of sunlight -- Long pants and sleeves are recommended, as is a medium-weight jacket.

Day 1 Thursday

Quito arrival.

On the first day of your journey, you’ll be greeted at the airport by a Celebrity Cruises ® representative and transferred to the JW Marriott hotel. Enjoy free time to relax and settle in.

Day 2 Friday

Breakfast is served at the hotel. During your guided tour of the capital of Ecuador, situated at an altitude of 9,350 feet, you’ll stand on the equatorial line at the Intiñan Solar Museum, and marvel at the monastery of San Francisco and la Compañia Church. Your Tour Director will escort you throughout your Quito stay, and serve as your personal concierge. Lunch with a spectacular view of the city, and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local gourmet restaurant.

Day 3 Saturday - AM

Quito/baltra island.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Baltra, Galapagos. During World War II, Baltra served as a U.S. military base protecting the Panama Canal from enemy attack. Now the cactus-strewn landscapes of Baltra are home to the region’s main airport and where you will meet the ship. From the airport, it is just a short bus and zodiac ride to the ship for embarkation.

Day 3 Saturday

Black turtle cove, santa cruz.

A Zodiac ride into Black Turtle Cove, one of the most beautiful sites in the Galapagos, takes you through a complex maze of tranquil saltwater inlets surrounded by mangroves. Once inside the cove, quietly explore the area looking for sea turtles, several species of rays, and sharks. It is also a nesting site for brown pelicans, egrets, and herons. Excursion options: Zodiac.

Day 4 Sunday

Rabida island.

A small island south of Santiago, Rabida is best known for its red sand and eroded volcanic landscape. A nesting colony of pelicans makes its home here, along with sea lions, finches, mockingbirds, Galapagos Hawks, and some seabirds. With good conditions, the snorkeling can be excellent. Excursion options: Zodiac, walk, swim, kayak and snorkel.

Egas Port, Santiago

With its black sand beach, coastal tide pools, and blue-water grottos, this stop offers a wonderful taste of the Galapagos and the opportunity to see shore birds, Galapagos Hawks, sea lions, marine iguanas, and Galapagos fur seals. Sea lions, colorful tropical fish, and sea turtles are often seen while snorkeling (conditions permitting). Excursion options: walk, swimming, snorkel.

Day 5 Monday

Tagus cove, isabela island.

Historically an anchorage for pirates and whalers, this site offers a breathtaking view of Isabela, its volcanoes, and a saltwater lagoon. Along the shore, seabirds, penguins, sea lions, sea turtles, and nesting flightless cormorants can often be found. Excursion options: Zodiac, walk, snorkeling and kayak.

Espinoza Point, Fernandina Island

Fernandina is the youngest island in the Galapagos and, as Darwin wrote, it is “covered with immense deluges of black naked lava.” Along with its extraordinary black lava rocks, this point of land hosts the largest colony of marine iguanas in the Archipelago, along with sea lions and a nesting site for flightless cormorants. Excursion options: Walk, snorkel, hike.

Day 6 Tuesday

Urvina bay, isabela island.

Composed of five merged volcanoes, this is the largest island in the Galapagos and the most recently active, the latest eruption having occurred at Wolf Volcano in 2015. Here you will see large land iguanas, finches, and if lucky, a giant tortoise or two. In 1954, magma from one of the island’s volcanoes caused part of the bay to be uplifted some 6 meters, allowing you to walk through the remains of what was once a thriving underwater reef. Excursion options: Walk, hike, snorkel, swim.

Vicente Roca Point, Isabela Island

The half-collapsed remains of an ancient volcano make for a spectacular setting at this site. Awe-inspiring cliffs, blue waters, and wildlife create a Zodiac ride to remember as you search for sea turtles, penguins, fur seals, the flightless cormorant, marine iguanas, marine mammals, and the oddly shaped form of the elusive sunfish. Excursion options: zodiac, deep water snorkel.

Day 7 Wednesday

Bartolomé island.

Bartolomé Island offers one of the region’s most photographed views, and is a spectacular geological setting. Its barren moon-like volcanic landscapes, spatter cones, and pinnacle rock make for a unique stop. It is also home to the endemic Galapagos penguin and provides an excellent opportunity for snorkeling. Excursion options: hike up some 368 stairs “To the Top” of the volcano, a Zodiac ride, and an optional beach swim or snorkel.

Las Bachas, Santa Cruz Island

Las Bachas Beach is located in the north of Santa Cruz Island. Its soft, white sand is derived from remains of coral, shells and algae making it a favorite nesting site for sea turtles. Behind the beach there is a small brackish lagoon, where it is possible to observe flamingos and other coastal birds, such as black-necked stilts and whimbrels. Excursion options: Walk, swim, and snorkel.

Daphne Island

Daphne is a satellite volcanic cone located north of Santa Cruz Island. The crater floor is an important breeding site for blue-footed boobies. The cliff shore of the island is home for sea lions, pelicans, blue-footed boobies, and tropic birds which can be observed during the circumnavigation of the island.

Day 8 Thursday

El barranco, genovesa.

El Barranco, also known as Prince Phillip’s Steps, is a steep stairway that leads up through a seabird colony full of Nazca and Red-footed Boobies. Once at the plateau, the trail continues inland and passes more nesting booby colonies in the thin Palo Santo forest. Keep an eye out for Galapagos doves, mockingbirds, storm petrels, and a short-eared lava owl if you are lucky. Excursion options: Hike, zodiac, deep water snorkel.

Darwin Bay, Genovesa

Darwin Bay’s soft white sand is only the beginning of a spectacular excursion. A trail from the beach takes you into lush mangroves where red-footed boobies nest. Other local wildlife includes sea lions, swallow-tailed gulls, frigate birds and more. Snorkeling is a must here, as the nutrient-rich water attracts all types of marine life including sharks, sea lions, sea turtles, and the occasional manta ray. Excursion options: Walk, swim, snorkel and kayak.

Day 9 Friday

Puerto ayora, santa cruz island.

The main population center of the islands, Puerto Ayora is home to the National Park Service tortoise-breeding center and the Charles Darwin Research Station. You will have the opportunity to take a bus ride to the highlands to observe giant tortoises in the wild and walk through a lava tunnel. Optional time for shopping will be available. Excursion options: Tortoise-breeding Center/Charles Darwin Center, Highlands.

Day 10 Saturday

From Baltra, you’ll fly to Quito, and then on to Lima, Peru. A Celebrity representative will be on hand to assist with all your transfers. You’ll overnight at the Westin Lima hotel.

Day 11 Sunday

Lima / cuzco - sacred valley, peru.

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will pick you up and transfer you to the airport for your flight to Cuzco. Upon arrival, visit Awanakancha, a farm of South American camelids and watch local families demonstrate the traditional process of weaving. Lunch is served at Casa Hacienda Orihuela in The Sacred Valley, where the Orihuelas, a family of great art collectors, will be your hosts. Dinner and overnight at the Tambo del Inca Luxury Collection hotel in The Sacred Valley.

Day 12 Monday

The sacred valley.

Experience the Urubamba Valley, The Sacred Valley of the Incas. Explore the impressive ruins, featuring hillside terraces and a crowning temple designed for worship and astronomical observation. You’ll tour Ollantaytambo and the Pablo Seminario workshop, then lunch at Wayra Ranch- a feast led by the prominent Chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino and Nacho Solis.

During your guided tour of the capital of Ecuador, situated at an altitude of 9,350 feet, you’ll stand on the equatorial line at the Middle of the World Park and Museum, and marvel at the monastery of San Francisco and la Compañia Church. Your Tour Director will escort you throughout your Quito stay, and serve as your personal concierge. Lunch with a spectacular view of the city, and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local gourmet restaurant.

Day 3 Saturday - AM

Quito - flight to baltra island - embarkation.

Day 3 Saturday - PM

Black turtle cove.

Day 4 Sunday - AM

Sullivan bay, santiago island.

During a volcanic eruption in the early 1900’s, this area of Santiago was covered with flowing lava. Today, the hardened fields of black rock create a geological wonderland. Take advantage of the cool of the early morning for a walk to view twisting hardened lava flows, collapsed craters, and lava ovens. Tall red scoria cones and pioneer plants also dot this unusual and very young landscape. Excursion options: Walk.

Day 4 Sunday - PM

Bartolomé island.

Bartolomé Island offers one of the region’s most photographed views, and is a spectacular geological setting. Its barren moon-like volcanic landscapes, spatter cones, and pinnacle rock make for a unique stop. It is also home to the endemic Galapagos penguin and provides an excellent opportunity for snorkeling. Excursion options: hike up some 368 stairs “To the Top” of the volcano, a zodiac ride, and an optional beach swim or snorkel.

Day 5 Monday - AM

Urvina bay, isabela island.

Composed of five merged volcanoes, this is the largest island in the Galapagos and the most recently active, the latest eruption having occurred in 2009.

Day 5 Monday - PM

Tagus cove, isabela island.

Historically an anchorage for pirates and whalers, this site offers a breathtaking view of Isabela, its volcanoes, and a saltwater lagoon. Along the shore, seabirds, penguins, sea lions, sea turtles, and nesting flightless cormorants can often be found. Excursion options: Zodiac, walk, snorkeling and kayak.

Day 6 Tuesday - AM

Espinoza point, fernandina island.

Excursion options: Walk, deep-water snorkel, hike.

Day 6 Tuesday - PM

Vicente roca point, isabela island.

Day 7 Wednesday - AM

Egas port, santiago island.

Day 7 Wednesday - PM

Espumilla beach, santiago island.

A sea turtle nesting site, favored attractions in this area include the Palo Santo forest, beach, and the lovely landscape. The trail passes a small seasonal lagoon where flamingos and white-cheeked pintail ducks are sometimes seen. Continuing on, the trail loops through the arid zone, where some of the tallest Palo Santo trees of the entire archipelago are found. Look out for the Galapagos Hawk as well as Darwin’s finches. Excursion options: Walk.

Buccaneer Cove, Santiago Island

Once a refuge for British buccaneers, pirate ships would anchor in this protected bay to make repairs and stock up on tortoise meat among other things. The steep cliffs, where hundreds of seabirds perch in front of the dark red sand beach, are a magnificent site. Excursion options: Kayak, snorkel, zodiac.

Day 8 Thursday

Puerto ayora, santa cruz island.

The main population center of the islands, Puerto Ayora is home to the National Park Service tortoise-breeding center and the Charles Darwin Research Station. You will have the opportunity to take a bus ride to the highlands to observe giant tortoises in the wild and walk through a lava tunnel. Optional time for shopping will be available. Excursion options: Tortoise-breeding Center/Charles Darwin Center, Highlands.

Day 9 Friday - PM

El barranco, genovesa island.

Darwin Bay, Genovesa Island

Darwin Bay’s soft white sand is only the beginning of a spectacular excursion. A trail from the beach takes you into lush mangroves where red-footed boobies nest. Other local wildlife includes sea lions, swallow-tailed gulls, frigatebirds and more. Snorkeling is a must here, as the nutrient-rich water attracts all types of marine life including sharks, sea lions, sea turtles, and the occasional manta ray. Excursion options: Walk, swim, snorkel and kayak.

Day 10 Saturday - AM

North seymour island, genovesa island.

North Seymour is a small island just north of Baltra. It is home to the largest colony of frigatebirds in the Galapagos. While keeping an eye out for male frigatebirds trying to impress potential mates with an inflated red neck pouch, you may see blue-footed boobies dancing in a timeless courtship ritual. Sea lions and large land iguanas also roam about this rocky terrain. Excursion options: Walk.

Day 10 Saturday - PM

Baltra disembarkation / transfer to puerto ayora.

Baltra is home to the region’s main airport, and where you will fly out after a zodiac and bus ride to the airport.

Day 11 Sunday

In the morning, take the opportunity to sleep in, enjoy a massage* in the hotel’s fabulous spa or go for a swim in the indoor pool—the choice is yours. At noon, your guide takes you on a culinary tour. Begin at Surquillo, the local food market, then enjoy lunch at one of Lima’s gourmet restaurants, and visit the bohemian district of Barranco. Breakfast and dinner, as well as overnight accommodations are provided at the Westin Lima Hotel.

Day 12 Monday

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will pick you up and transfer you to the airport for your flight to Cuzco. Lunch is served at Casa Hacienda Orihuela in The Sacred Valley, where the Orihuelas, a family of great art collectors, will be your hosts. Dinner and overnight at the Tambo del Inca Luxury Collection hotel in The Sacred Valley.

Day 13 Tuesday

The sacred valley.

Experience the Urubamba Valley, The Sacred Valley of the Incas. Explore the impressive ruins, featuring hillside terraces and a crowning temple designed for worship and astronomical observation. You’ll tour Ollantaytambo and the Pablo Seminario workshop, then lunch at Wayra Ranch- a feast led by the prominent Chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino and Nacho Solis. During your meal, delight in stunning equestrian Peruvian Paso horse entertainment and marinera music. Dine and overnight at Tambo del Inca Luxury Collection.

Day 14 Wednesday

Sacred valley / machu picchu.

After breakfast at the hotel, depart for Machu Picchu on the Vistadome train. Lunch will be served at the Sanctuary Lodge in Machu Picchu. Tour the exceptionally preserved buildings and mysterious passageways underlying the city. Then, enjoy welcoming aperitifs, dinner, and an excellent selection of wines while relaxing on the Belmond Hiram Bingham back to Cuzco for an evening of local music, dancing, and Pisco sours. Overnight at Hotel Monasterio in Cuzco.

Machu Picchu Excursion Option - 2017

Hello fellow CC'ers!

My partner and I are currently booked on a 14-day cruise for March, 2017 heading out of Chile, going through the Panama Canal and ending up in Miami. That being said, I figured since we were down there and don't know when we will be back, we might take advantage of the Machu Picchu outing. This is a three-day event that takes you there and you meet back up with the ship. As you can see, it is VERY expensive, and I wanted to put the feelers out there to see if anyone has done it, and if they felt that it was worth it or not. I appreciate any advice the community has to offer!

Have done it with another tour company. It is wonderful. Lots of people do it with private tours for less cost and a bit more relaxed touring especially if you are a bit younger than the Celebrity cruising demographic of 60ish.

Cool Cruiser

Is it worth it to see Machu Picchu? Absolutely!! However, I would find a much cheaper way to do it.

An incredible ancient city......we did it on our own in conjunction with Celebrity's Galapagos cruise at a fraction of the cost Celebrity was charging. Got private tours and transport from the airport in Cusco. Also did Lake Tittiaca and reed islands while we were there-wonderful experience. Definitely do it, but much better privately and less expensive too. Good luck!

Keep in mind that to do this excursion on your own, you'll be leaving the ship in Lima, Peru and re-joining it in Manta, Ecuador on the 26th. And if anything should go wrong with that transfer to Manta, the ship's next port is Colon on the 28th.

10,000+ Club

Go on your own. We were on another ship but left in Peru and rejoined the ship in Ecuador. We were able to spend 3 days and two at Machu Picchu.

I did this exact excursion with my mother, but from a Princess cruise. If you think you might never get to Machu Picchu again, absolutely worth it. We went because at 70, Mom felt it was her only chance. I always thought I'd get back some day with my husband, but it hasn't happened yet.

I think it would be too risky to do it on your own, and I say this as someone who always books my own excursions and pre/post extensions. Mostly the flights back from Cusco to Manta would be tricky. Ours was delayed, and the ship had to wait for us. We flew in the morning from Cusco to Quito, had a day long tour, and flew in the late afternoon/evening to Manta from Quito. Not sure how the Celebrity tour works, but at the time, that was the only way to get from Cusco to Manta.

I'll be happy to answer any other questions about how the tour ran to the best of my recollection.

ETA: That is a lot of money, though, ours was $1,400 (12 years ago). Not sure if I could pull the trigger for that amount, YMMV. You could do an entire Machu Picchu/Sacred Valley/Lake Titicaca for less than that as a separate vacation I would think?

5,000+ Club

Did this on our own in combination with a Galapagos cruise.

Would never do it with Celebrity. First of all, the price is literally 2-3 times what you can do it for on your own. Secondly, you may have much less time at Machu Picchu. When we did our tour, we had made a morning tour of the ruins and were having lunch when the Celebrity group first arrived. We also stayed after they left in the afternoon (since we were spending the night in Aguas Calientes) and had time to go back to the ruins in the morning before we took the train back to Cuzco.

Yes, the Celebrity tour uses the Hiram Bingham (the "upscale" train) but you are going to be stomping around ruins for an afternoon, how important is the "class" of the train?

And, you lose 3 days off the ship. Honestly, I am quite confident you could return to the USA, fly to Lima at a later date, spend 4 or 5 days in Lima and Cuzco and Aguas Calientes, including 2 days at Machu Picchu and do it for LESS than the Celebrity tour. For example, our tour for 4 days which included all accommodation, the train trip, guide in both Cuzco and MP, was less than $1500 total for 2. Airfare from Lima to Cuzco is less than $200 per person RT.

"Convenience" is simply not worth that kind of $$$ to us.

We did the southbound version of your itinerary on the Infinity this last December. Great trip!

While in the planning stage I briefly explored the Machu Picchu excursion option. We chose not to do it because 1) it took away time aboard, 2) it provided too little time in Cuzco and Machu Picchu, and 3) it was too expensive. All concerns which have already been mentioned by others on this thread.

Instead of Machu Picchu as an excursion from the Infinity, we did the following:

1 - We stayed over several days after our cruise ended in Valparaiso. Had a couple of days in Valparaiso, then up to Santiago, a flight over to Easter Islands, 3 nights/4 days there, back to Santiago, then back home. You could do much the same by going a few days early. Valparaiso is worth at least 2-3 days, ditto Easter Islands. You'll never be closer to Easter Islands; the only flight to the islands is from Santiago.

2 - We booked a Galapagos trip for 2018. We will go to Machu Picchu as an extension on that trip and intend to make our own arrangements that are less expensive and less constraining than we could do with the typical ship's excursion.

500+ Club

We initially were going to take this excursion on a Holland America cruise, but decided against it. After talking to people that had been to Machu Picchu, they said there was a lot more to see than just Machu Picchu in the Sacred Valley. If you have the time, it's much cheaper to go on a separate tour for 8 - 10 days and you will also get acclimated to the altitude. As one of the previous post indicated, on a separate tour you get to spend more time at Machu Picchu and have time if you want to climb to the Sun Gate.

In any case, going to Machu Picchu is really worth it.

3418ahl

You might check Enrichment Journeys. They attach land tours to a lot of cruises, but you do have to book the cruise through them. We just got back from a Santiago to Rio cruise on the Infinity and had an eight day land tour with Enrichment Journeys prior to the cruise, including Machu Picchu, the sacred valley, etc. They then dropped us off at the ship pier to board. The accommodations and guides were first rate.

Because of altitude, the short cruise line excursion can really be very uncomfortable and not very satisfying, especially with the money involved. A suggestion might be to go prior to the cruise and make the arrangements on you own. There are a number of threads about this. One of the best experts in this area of the world was greatam, now deceased, but she answered many questions and these can be found here.

1982CruzStart

1982CruzStart

We did a trip to MP off a cruise in 2012. We knew it was probably the only time we would get there. We did it privately, spent much less than the cruise line excursion and even stayed at the hotel right outside the gate of MP and had a private guide for 6 of us. Well worth it. We lucked out and joined Jade13 for our trip, she had done all the research and for the most part had the trip all planned out before we decided to join them. It was unforgettable.

I would be reluctant to do it privately for just 2 of us but there were others off the cruise ship that did that as well as 1 couple that went with Abercrombie and Kent and it still cost less than the cruise line excursion.

As for altitude sickness when going for such a short time, we took medication prescribed by a travel doctor and had no issues at all.

Look into your options but whatever you do don't miss the opportunity to go if you think this may be your only chance.

north29

The cost of a cruise ship trip, is WAY TOO high, I did most all of Peru, for 14 days for $2500 all inclusive +air. Peru is one of my favorite trips I have ever taken. Like, I said, there is more to see and do in Peru than Just Machu Picchu

If for health related issue with some cruisers/travelers, it might be a good deal.

If you do not speak Spanish, I would not recommend doing it on your own.

Click on the you tube link in my sig. there are two videos of our trip.

Celebrity offers a Machu Picchu extension from the Galapagos cruises on Xpedition. When we took the cruise in 2015 we passed on MP because the trip seemed too short and altitude sickness seemed too likely. But I noticed that for this year Celebrity has extended that excursion to address both problems. The trip you are considering seems much too short.

Hi we also plan to take a private tour to Machu Picchu and would love to know about your 4 day tour ie who arranged the guide, driver, did you book the train and entry into MP yourself etc. Thanks in anticipation Raema

There are a number of tours available, we can't mention specifics here but they are easy to find. They handled everything from transport to the airport in Lima, arrival in Cuzco, hotel in Cuzco, pickup (EARLY) for the train to Aguas Calientes (paid for), entry and a tour guide at MP, hotel overnight in Aguas Calientes and a return the next day on the afternoon train. Another night in Cuzco, flight to Lima the next AM. Seamless. They may have restructured some of their tours so you may want to customize a bit.

We must have been on Solstice when original post was made. We have done this trip from our Infinity S America B2B with celebrity guides etc. Personally I would not have taken any other option, the flight to rejoin the ship had engine problems so we were all put on the next flight and other passengers were given compensation for us taking their seats. Instead of boarding in the port we had to tender out to the ship which had to move due to tides.it was the 1st time we had seen the Staff Captain driving a tender with crew using flashlights to guide him through the yachts in the marina. Ido not like heights but it was a wonderful experience which we would not have done on our own. Please don't forget the possibilities of altitude sickness

I agree. It is a bucket list item to see, but there are much less expensive alternatives.

Machu Picchu

Getting to Machu Picchu

Located along the central west coast of Peru, Callao is the primary seaport for the nation’s capital,  Lima . And for visitors arriving by cruise ship, this is where a journey to the fabled cloud city of Machu Picchu begins. When Spanish conquistadors came to Peru feverish with thoughts of gold, they never dreamed that a place as mysterious as Machu Picchu could exist. Fortunately, they never found this “lost city of the Incas,” and it remained a local secret for hundreds of years — until it was rediscovered by Yale professor Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Getting To Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu lies in the Andes Mountains approximately 80 kilometers northwest of the Peruvian city of Cusco. The combination of its isolated mountaintop location and the fact that the route to it was such a well-kept secret, ensured Machu Picchu was never found by marauding conquistadors. Archaeologists believe the site is an Incan royal retreat or a religious complex — researchers are still unraveling the secrets of this place. The Incas left behind no written language, so no records exist to give clues as to its purpose. What is known is that fewer than 1,000 people lived at Machu Picchu at any given time and it was abandoned early in the 16th century — some theorize this was due to a smallpox outbreak. The city is built on a series of terraces 11,000-feet above sea level, covering some 5 miles of territory. A network of 3,000 carved stone steps links together each piece of this ancient puzzle. The remains of its numerous buildings, courtyards, ramps, and walls is a breathtaking site to behold — what makes it even more impressive is that the Incas lacked iron or steel and had not invented the wheel. Yet the stones used in its construction were fitted together with such precision no mortar was needed.

How To Get To Machu Picchu?

The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, its official title, is one of the world’s most important archaeological sites, and as such, it’s been named to the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Once secret and isolated, Machu Picchu has become a renowned destination on many an adventurer’s bucket list. So, you won’t have to cut your way through the rainforest with a machete like Indiana Jones to get there. Two options exist for getting to the site; both require a short flight from Callao to Cusco. For those who want something close to the tomb raider/explorer experience, then a hike along the Inca Trail is the route to go. Distance and time varies as there are several routes to choose — all start from outside Cusco. The most popular are the four- and two-day treks. Due to the popularity of Machu Picchu and the subsequent heavy use of the trail network, the Peruvian government has put a limit on the number of people who can traverse the trails each day. Only official guide operators may escort visitors and booking trail time with one of these groups well ahead of time is recommended.
