Check-In M

Rimowa Check-In M

The preferred stealth wealth suitcases of Succession ’ s masters of the universe now come in sleek all-black models, making it that much easier to lean into the quiet luxury aesthetic. Good looks aside though, the British brand’s Carry-On X is a favorite of business travelers and frequent fliers alike, thanks to its large front pocket—also a hard-shell construction—perfect for travel documents and electronics, details like silent Japanese spinner wheels and Italian leather trim, and up to an inch of expansion capability.

Dimensions : 15" x 21.7" x 9.6" (10.6" expanded); 9.5 lbs

A 5-star review: “This Carry-On is not only incredibly beautiful, it’s functional, practical and does everything you want it to do. Incredibly well thought out and designed for people who travel a lot and need functionality.”

It always bodes well for a suitcase’s credibility when it gets the pilot seal of approval. Such is the case with this carry-on by Sterling Pacific, a new luggage brand based in Reno, Nevada, which has earned top marks with the world’s most frequent fliers thanks to details like an all-aluminum construction (even in the handles), an easy-to-use one-sided rectangular trunk design, and—in an industry rarity—a two-wheel construction, which is how the true OGs roll.

Dimensions : 22.5" x 14" x 8.5" ; 11.5 lbs.

A 5-star review: “As both a 4+ million miler and an engineer I rate the quality and construction of the case as excellent. The best part is it’s NOT a clamshell. Having to separate items in equal amounts it’s not very practical. This solves the issue with a single space.”

We can thank Rimowa for turning hard-shell luggage, especially of the aluminum variety, into a global status symbol. There is also more than a century of innovation to justify its popularity—as legend has it, aluminum became the company’s signature material because it was the only thing that survived a factory fire in the ’30s.

Dimensions : 26.4" x 17.8" x 9.5"; 11.9 lbs.

Bric's Bellagio 2.0 Carry-On

Bellagio 2.0 Carry-On

That the Princess of Wales is partial to Bric’s luggage may be endorsement enough, but the heritage Italian brand—headquartered in tony Lake Como—has also earned its reputation through 70 years of craftsmanship. The signature Bellagio line, constructed in polycarbonate and finished with leather trimmings, is perfect for those who want a hard-shell with a more classic and feminine vibe.

Dimensions: 14" x 8" x 21"

Samsonite Tech 2.0 Expandable Luggage 2-Piece Set

Tech 2.0 Expandable Luggage 2-Piece Set

Not of the camp that luggage should be a splurge? Then the answer is Samsonsite, a brand as established and trusted for its quality pieces as for its great price point. It checks all the boxes required of a durable suitcase: sturdy polycarbonate shell, ergonomic handles, really good wheels, lightweight, and with expansion capabilities.

Dimensions: 27" x 19.4" x 13" (for check-in model)

A 5-star review: “I took these to Hawaii, Europe, and Lake Tahoe. These are so durable! It has all the pockets and storage you could want and its hard shell provides protection for everything inside.”

Paravel Aviator Grand

Aviator Grand

Billed as the world’s first carbon-neutral luggage, Paravel’s suitcases are composed of recycled polycarbonate, recycled aluminum, and recycled vegan leather. It also claims to offset all of the carbon emissions generated by not only making the bag and shipping it to you, but also from the first flight you take with it. Now that’s traveling with a conscience.

Dimensions : 18.25" x 28" x 11"; 11.8 lbs.

A 5-star review: “This suitcase went way beyond my expectations. The color is just as advertised. The bag itself is of excellent quality. The vegan leather is very sturdy and well made. There is so much room inside of this bag. It’s easy to handle and move around. The wheels glide with ease.”

Monos Carry-On

Carry-On

Monos gets high marks for its variety of pretty colors—including this limited edition version in terracotta—as well as its use of vegan finishes and recycled materials. The excellent price point doesn't hurt either. And if you happen to get a check-in bag as well, all carry-ons are designed to fit inside their larger counterparts to maximize storage (a godsend for New Yorkers).

Dimensions : 22" × 14" × 9"; 7 lbs.

A 5-star review: “I put this bag through its paces for a week and it came out unscathed on the other end. I’ve been recommending it to anyone who will listen!”

FPM Bank Collection Spinner 76

Bank Collection Spinner 76

Classic meets contemporary and nostalgia meets the new with FPM Milano's signature Bank suitcases, designed by the 77-year-old company as modern takes on vintage trunks. All the elements of a heritage Italian brand are there, like the fine leather details on handles and the interior straps, as are the necessary components that make them worthy of 21st-century international jetsetting: thick aluminum shells, excellent wheels, butterfly locks.

Dimensions : 19.25" x 29.5" x 11.25"; 16.3 lbs.

Away The Medium: Aluminum Edition

The Medium: Aluminum Edition

This is probably one of the best deals around on an aluminum shell suitcase, most of which tend to be priced at more than $1,000. That it comes from one of the most popular luggage brands on the market gives it that extra cred.

Dimensions: 26" x 18.5" x 11"; 13.3 lbs.

A 5-star review: “I've been an international traveler for decades. I've had many bags in my time, and many that didn't survive the abuse. This one is my favorite. I love this suitcase. The compression system is always great, allowing more stuff to be squeezed in. The aluminum edition color and material is beautiful. It gets beat up pretty quickly by the lovely baggage handlers of the world, but I enjoy the suitcase carrying scars of travel. Finally, the support at Away is always fantastic.”

Tumi Extended Trip Expandable 4 Wheeled Packing Case

Extended Trip Expandable 4 Wheeled Packing Case

Considering how large this suitcase is (see dimensions below), it’s remarkable that it only weighs around 12 lbs. But that’s what you get with a brand that knows what it’s doing. Tumi, which also happens to be the maker of the backpack T& C executive travel editor Klara Glowczewska never goes anywhere without .

Dimensions: 30" x 20" x 11"; 12.1 lbs.

A 5-star review: “Just spent 2 weeks in Italy and this piece was perfect for fitting everything. Love how smoothly it rolls, even over cobblestone streets. The color is great because it is easy to see amongst a sea of black suitcases.”

Frequently Asked Questions

shape

Aluminum or polycarbonate? It depends. Polycarbonate shells tend to be lighter, have a lower price point, and will withstand dents and scratches relatively well. Aluminum, on the other hand, is more expensive and can easily bruise—but for some, that steep price tag and the patina of frequent wear and tear is all part of the flex.

Zippers or butterfly locks? The satisfying click and sleek aesthetics of butterfly locks are big pros, but keep in mind that they leave very little margin for error. A zipper construction will be slightly more forgiving when you need to close an overpacked suitcase.

Is a built-in battery pack worth it? Away was an early pioneer of carry-ons reinforced with charging banks and USB ports, but a few years ago it started phasing this feature out of its popular models. For one, portable power banks have become ubiquitous anyway so a built-in one is redundant. And then there is the hassle of having to remove it to charge (or to check your bag, or because an unsympathetic gate agent won’t let you on the plane until she sees it in your hand). But if having that charger significantly improves your life, you do you!

The luggage you use for your annual vacation to the sun, a weekend away, or longer adventures in faraway places is almost as important as the belongings you take with you. Whether you choose to check your luggage or carry it in the cabin, there are many benefits to traveling with hardside luggage.

Hardside luggage has a rigid exterior that is stiff and solid rather than the soft and flexible exterior of more traditional fabric suitcases . Although slightly heavier even when empty, hardside cases offer an extra layer of protection for your precious possessions and are often much more durable than their softer-sided counterparts.

Here are some of the very best reasons to choose hardside luggage on your next adventure.

Keep Your Belongings Really Safe

If you are planning on taking valuables like your laptop , camera , or other electronics with you, a hardside or hardshell suitcase offers the highest level of protection against damage in transit . A good quality case will also help to keep your most prized possessions dry in wet or humid conditions.

Bottom Line: These types of cases offer an increased level of protection against theft, as would-be thieves can’t slash the sides of the case, and locks are usually harder to break into.

Use the Space the Way You Want

Away luggage internal compartment

Most hardside cases open like a book, offering a 50/50 split that allows you to fill both sides equally. The space is also incredibly usable as there are no fabric folds to contend with.

Find Your Case on the Carousel

Of course, there will always be lots of similar or identical cases on any carousel, but with hardside cases you can go all out and wear your style on your case with bright colors, bold designs, and even personalized printed images, making it super easy to find at baggage claim. If this wasn’t enough you can also use some unique and creative luggage tags .

Move It With Ease

Hard cases offer a much smoother ride than other types of wheeled luggage. Built to remain upright and even balanced with the weight of their contents, hardside suitcases often have 4 wheels and a superstrong handle making them easy to roll along next to you.

Because not all hardside suitcases are equal and no 2 trips are the same, there are many things to consider before you invest in your next suitcase.

Hardside luggage sizes

Most suitcase manufacturers will offer a range of sizes across each of their ranges. Small cases are usually designed for those who want to take carry-on luggage only and are not looking to check their luggage on arrival.

Small cases usually measure around 22 x 18 x 10 inches. Never assume, though, that any “cabin-sized” hardside suitcase will automatically be accepted in the overhead bins — always check the size restrictions of the airline you are traveling with.

Medium cases can measure 25 to 27 inches while large cases can go up to as much as 32 inches in length. While there are no standard restrictions in terms of size when it comes to checked cases , many airlines often state that the linear measurements must not exceed 62 inches. Restrictions can also apply to the weight of the case, and how many you can take with you. If your cases are too heavy, you will be subject to additional fees.

Another thing to remember when it comes to hardside luggage is the fact that the internal dimensions may be slightly smaller overall than those found in softshell cases . Softside cases can also expand a little when full, allowing you to squeeze in the odd extra item here and there.

Bottom Line: It is the exact lack of flexibility and stretching that appeals to hardside luggage lovers, as a solid structure leads to better security for your belongings in transit.

Hardsize luggage weight

It is a common misconception that all hardside suitcases are much heavier than similarly sized soft-sided ones. The truth is that at most there is usually only a very small difference in the weight of the two. Hardside cases weigh an average of 2 to 5 pounds more than soft-sided alternatives.

It should also be noted that the latest generations of hardside cases are actually incredibly lightweight, while still being supremely durable. Those made from ABS materials are generally lighter than those made from more polycarbonate, but the difference is minuscule and the latter is more hard-wearing.

Number of Wheels

Hardsize luggage wheels

It seems unfathomable to think about carrying your case these days, with spinning wheels being available on almost all modern-day suitcases. The 2-wheeled cases can easily be pulled along behind you, as you gently tip the case towards you as you roll. These are easy to use and smooth to maneuver.

If you really want to wheel with ease though, a 4-wheeled spinning case gives you the ultimate experience in smooth rolling capabilities . You can keep the case close to your side on your journey through the concourse. You can even push 1 case while you pull another if you need to, and 4-wheeled spinning wheels are much easy to maneuver in tight spaces and crowded airports.

Hot Tip: If you opt for a 4-wheel spinner instead of a 2-wheel, you may find the internal space is squeezed a little more with the 4 recessed wheels taking a few more inches out of the overall packing space.

Hardsize luggage handles

Because you will want to pull your suitcase along with you, the handle needs to be strong enough to withstand numerous trips and adventures. The handle should be able to slot away quickly once you have finished pulling or pushing your suitcase.

Bottom Line: The best telescopic handles are usually made of high-grade aluminum and have a supersmooth mechanism.

Hardsize luggage zips

The zipper of your suitcase should be well-engineered and designed to last multiple uses. It should also be set back into the body of the suitcase when shut, and strong enough to withstand any attempt to be slashed or opened by would-be thieves in transit. Some of the latest generations of hardside cases don’t even have zippers, meaning they shut tight by clipping down and using a lock.

Speaking of locks, they are a must-have on any suitcase, and the lock you choose will need to be TSA-approved . These types of locks are accessible by transport authority agents should they need to check the contents of your case, but will still protect your belongings from theft or damage.

TSA locks have a keyhole at the bottom that allows agents to use a special TSA key to unlock your suitcase. Although you can buy these locks to use on any type of case, some hardside cases have them already built-in.

Material and Durability

Hardside luggage materials

Aluminum — The heaviest of all hard cases is also the strongest and usually the most expensive. These cases look impressive, but they can scratch easily and do not always fair particularly well against the rough and tumble of air travel.

Polycarbonate — Offering high-level impact resistance and impressive durability, polycarbonate cases are available in a wide range of colors and styles, all of which offer excellent protection against bumps, dings, heat, and moisture. As one of the most durable materials on the market, polycarbonate cases are virtually unbreakable.

ABS — Being made from a mixture of 3 plastics, these cases are resistant to heat and impact and have a sophisticated, high gloss finish. ABS cases can be cheaper than some other materials, but they are not as strong as polycarbonate or aluminum cases and are best if you are on a budget.

There are a whole host of different hardside suitcases out there to choose from, with various sizes to suit every budget. Here are some of the best.

Final Verdict

How we tested, other hardside luggage we tested, what to look for in hardside luggage bags, frequently asked questions, why trust tripsavvy.

TripSavvy / Lecia Landis

Representing the most modern choice when packing for your next trip, hardside luggage is loved by travelers everywhere for its fashionable aesthetic and easy upkeep. It also provides rigid protection for your valuables—especially today, when the materials and techniques used to produce hardside suitcases are better and more durable than ever. There are many sizes and styles to choose from, from simple, budget-friendly versions to more expensive ones with features ranging from integrated USB ports to optional monogramming.

To help you narrow your search for the perfect travel companion, our experts tested dozens of the most popular hardside suitcases in the TripSavvy lab. We tested each one for durability, capacity, organization, maneuverability, and value.

Best Overall

Samsonite freeform carry-on spinner.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

Rolls smoothly

Built to last

Beautiful, on-trend colors

Relatively few interior pockets

The Samsonite Freeform Carry-On is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a one-stop hardside suitcase that meets cabin requirements but doesn’t compromise on packing space. We love that although it has relatively few bells and whistles, it fulfills its purpose perfectly with a streamlined polypropylene exterior that survived our durability tests virtually unscathed. It also looks great, with a ridged shell in a choice of colors from functional black to options such as Sky Blue or Amethyst Purple that are guaranteed to stand out on the luggage carousel.

Samsonite claims that this suitcase offers increased packing space compared to earlier models, and indeed we could fit everything on our prescribed packing list without using the expansion feature. We liked that there was a separate section for shoes and a zippered delicates pocket, but we would have appreciated a section for dirty laundry. The bag has four double spinner wheels for 360-degree maneuverability, and we found that it glided perfectly at a range of different speeds (although it was easier to handle bumps on two wheels than four).

Other highlights include the push-button handle with its wide, comfortable grip and multiple height settings; a recessed, TSA-approved combination lock; and a built-in ID tag.

Best Carry-On

Travelpro platinum elite carry-on spinner.

  • Capacity 4.7 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5

Very easy to maneuver

Comfortable handle with a textured grip

Smart features

Relatively expensive

Not as spacious as some competitors

For those with a little extra room in their budget, the Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On is an intelligent option with a polycarbonate shell designed to flex upon impact and a textured finish that hides all scuffs and scratches. Indeed, it didn’t sustain any visible damage during our testing process. Aluminum corner guards, a genuine leather trim, and stylish colors ranging from Metallic Sand to Vintage Grey complete this suitcase’s high-end look. It’s also convenient, with USB-A and USB-C fast-charge ports and an external-access power bank pocket.

It opens clamshell-style and features two zippered divider panels and multiple mesh pockets. There’s even a water-resistant pouch for your toiletries. The only downside? We found we needed to use the 2-inch expansion to fit all our items in, which made the bag significantly larger and therefore harder to fit into the overhead compartment. Still, the smooth roll provided by Travelpro’s exclusive PrecisionGlide System (with self-aligning wheels and a four-stop handle) more than made up for it.

After a few months of testing, our only qualm with the suitcase is the rollers aren't the best at rolling true and we found them spinning off from side to side at times. But it's still an overall solid suitcase with all the features we were looking for in a hardside carry-on.

Best Checked

Samsonite winfield 2 hardside.

  • Maneuverability 4.5 /5

Shell bounces back in place upon impact

Easy, two-sided packing

Handles well over multiple surfaces

Surprisingly limited color choices

This is the second suitcase from Samsonite, one of the best luggage brands on the market. We love the Samsonite Winfield 2 28-inch spinner for its no-nonsense functionality, fashion-forward aesthetic, and mid-range price. The polycarbonate shell is lightweight yet durable, and we were particularly impressed by the way dented corners popped easily back into shape during our testing process. The brush-stroke coloration should hide potential scuffs and scratches, while color choices range from Nordic Blue to Brushed Anthracite for a smart look that never goes out of style.

We found the suitcase roomy and liked how it maintained its size and shape even when stuffed to capacity. The compression feature was another bonus, keeping clothes neatly in place—as was the full-zip interior divider, which allowed us to keep clean and dirty items separate. If you need extra space, there’s a handy expansion feature. Finally, we found that the multi-directional wheels allowed for smooth maneuverability over a range of terrains. We could easily pull the suitcase behind us or push it in front.

Best Budget, Carry On

Amazon basics expandable hardside 21-inch spinner.

Understated, polished design

Intuitive interior layout

Excellent handling

No TSA-approved lock

The only suitcase on this list with a price tag well under $100, the AmazonBasics 21-inch Spinner offers great value for money with a simple yet sleek aesthetic and an ABS plastic shell that surpassed all expectations during our drop and bat tests. The scratch-resistant finish helps the suitcase maintain its good looks for longer, while durable zippers protect the fully lined interior.

We could easily fit all of the items on our list without employing the expansion feature (which increases packing space by up to 15 percent). We appreciated the bag’s clever organization features, which include a divider, compression straps, and three zippered pockets. In terms of maneuverability, it has four double-spinner wheels and a sturdy telescoping handle. We were pleasantly surprised by how easily it glided, even on rougher terrain, over bumps, and around sharp turns.

Best Budget, Checked

Kenneth cole reaction hardside spinner.

Spacious, functional interior

Comes in a variety of attractive colors

Reinforced corners for added durability

Difficult to wheel over graveled surfaces

With a sturdy yet lightweight ABS shell, the Kenneth Cole Reaction Out of Bounds 28-inch spinner makes the most of your hold luggage weight allowance. It’s also easy on your wallet, coming in cheaper than many carry-ons on this list. It has molded corner guards for increased impact resistance, which we proved with extensive drop and bat tests (from which it emerged with only a few superficial scuffs). The fully lined interior looks compact from the outside but is amazingly roomy.

Our tester estimated that they would be able to fit a month’s worth of clothes plus extras, and also appreciated how well organized the suitcase was with a large zippered pocket, compression straps, and a divider for two-sided packing. The lightweight trolley system—with its multi-directional wheels and push-button handle—gives the suitcase excellent maneuverability around tight turns. We found that it rolled smoothly over concrete and carpet and only experienced trouble on rough gravel.

A few months into testing, the only noticeable issue we've seen is the outer surface is easily scuffed and has some worn spots. But everything else is fine and our testers report it still rolls and maneuvers very well.

Best Capacity

Delsey paris hardside spinner.

  • Maneuverability 3.5 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5

Extra roomy even before expansion

Solid maneuverability

Eye-catching jewel tones

Bare-bones internal organization

Planning an extended trip or a little bit prone to overpacking ? The 29-inch Delsey Paris Helium Aero spinner is for you. We loved its chic look, with a metallic polycarbonate shell in a range of rich colors. The ridged exterior should protect the bag from rough handling, and it stood up well to our tests, with only minor scuffing visible afterward. Most of all, we loved how spacious the suitcase was, with an expandable clamshell interior that had space to spare once we packed everything on our list.

The interior structure is minimal, with two pockets, a zippered divider, and a set of compression straps; however, packing cubes can help overcome this potential downside. The suitcase has four double-spinner wheels and a two-stop telescoping handle. We found it capable of navigating bumps and easy to push or pull on concrete and carpet, although gravel proved a little more challenging. Other features include a TSA-approved lock and a limited 10-year warranty. Our testers continue to love how lightweight this suitcase is.

Dimensions: 31.75 x 20 x 12 inches | Weight: 12.5 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: Yes

Best Organization

Away the bigger carry-on flex.

  • Durability 4 /5

Trendy, modern aesthetic

Smart and functional interior

Easy to maneuver

With its textured polycarbonate shell, leather details, and colors ranging from brilliant green or navy to quirky lavender, The Bigger Carry-On Flex from Away is a fashionable choice. It’s also ideal for the super organized, with several different compartments, an internal compression system that makes it easy to pack bulky items, and a hidden laundry bag. The lining is also removable and washable, helping your luggage to look brand new for longer. If you run out of space, the suitcase expands by 2.25 inches.

It’s also durable, with only a few minor scuffs sustained during our drop tests. We appreciate that the suitcase comes with a sponge to remove these marks. Finally, it performed well over various surfaces, gliding smoothly on two or four wheels and turning easily (helpful in navigating crowded airports). Added benefits include an underside grab handle, an integrated TSA-approved lock, and a 100-day free trial to make sure you’re satisfied.

A few months into testing, our testers call this suitcase lightweight, roomy, durable, and waterproof. “This will probably be the last carry-on I ever need,” a tester said.

Dimensions: 22.7 x 14.7 x 9.6 inches | Weight: 8.55 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: Yes

Best for Business Travel

Béis the carry-on roller.

  • Durability 2.5 /5

Equally attractive and durable design

Superb interior layout

Good for overpackers

No bright or jewel tones available

The Carry-On Roller from Béis gives the frequent business traveler the perfect combination of style and function. Designed to fit in any overhead compartment, it also expands by 2 inches whenever you need more space. Its stain-resistant virgin polycarbonate shell looks good (whether you opt for Beige, Maple, or Atlas Pink) and emerged from our extensive durability tests with just one minor scratch. The suitcase features an integrated TSA lock and a weight indicator, so you’re never left unpacking in the terminal again.

We particularly loved the internal organization, which includes two divider panels with multiple zippered pockets. There’s also a separate pouch set for your shoes and dirty laundry. Our tester felt confident that no matter how roughly the bag was handled, their belongings would arrive in the same condition. The cushioned silicone handle was another highlight (making those airport miles a little less tiring), while the 360-degree spinner wheels handled bumps, tight corners, and carpet well.

We continue to love the capacity of this suitcase but have had issues with the middle level of the telescoping handle staying in place.

Dimensions: 22 x 14 x 9 inches | Weight: 8.36 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: Yes

Best Expandable

Samsonite outline pro carry-on spinner.

Capacious, functional interior

Charges your devices

Doesn't handle carpet as well as others

Looking for a contemporary carry-on that expands to provide additional capacity when needed? Consider the chic Samsonite Outline Pro, with a lightweight polypropylene shell that survived our testing process without sustaining a single scratch or dent. The Recyclex-lined interior expands at the pull of a zipper—although we found we didn’t need this feature to fit everything on our packing list. We loved how well-organized the suitcase is, with a divider panel that doubles as a compression system and multiple zippered pockets.

It also has several thoughtful extras, including a USB charge port, a TSA-approved lock, and handles treated with an antimicrobial additive. The main trolley handle is also molded for comfort and can be adjusted to suit different heights. The only downside we experienced was testing the suitcase on the carpet, where we felt reduced maneuverability (around corners especially). Overall, the bag performed better on two wheels than on four.

Dimensions: 23 × 15 × 10 inches | Weight: 6.39 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: Yes

Travelpro Platinum Elite Hardside Spinner

  • Value 4.5 /5

Supports different packing styles

Glides beautifully even over rough terrain

Works for a couple

Relatively expensive

About as big as airlines will allow, the Travelpro Platinum Elite Large Check-In Spinner is for extended trips or family vacations on a budget . It offers a vast amount of space—so much so that we could easily fit everything on our packing list, even before using the 2-inch expansion feature. Despite fitting so much, it was easy to keep everything organized with the help of zippered divider panels, adjustable compression straps, and multiple accessory pockets, including a waterproof one for your toiletries. We also loved how smooth the zippers were.

As befits its large size, the suitcase is also strong, with a 100 percent polycarbonate shell that flexes on impact—and survived our tests without a single dent. Travelpro’s patented PrecisionGlide System takes the strain off your arm and shoulder, using eight self-aligning spinner wheels and a sturdy four-stop handle to deliver flawless maneuverability. We were incredibly impressed with how well it handled, rolling like a dream over bumps, smoothly over carpet, and even handling gravel.

Dimensions: 30 x 18 x 13.5 inches | Weight: 12.3 pounds | Wheels: 8 | Expandable: Yes

Best Durability

Roam the check-in.

  • Capacity 4 /5

Option to personalize color combination

Keeps your belongings dry

Rolls smoothly over uneven terrain

The most expensive option on this list

The Check-In from Roam is undoubtedly an investment—but its superior durability justifies its higher price tag. Even after repeated drop and bat tests, we couldn’t see any signs of damage on its sturdy polycarbonate shell, while extra-strength, water-repellent zippers make this suitcase truly weatherproof. Every feature meets the same high-quality standards, from the ball-bearing wheels to the aircraft-grade, four-stop aluminum handle. When combined, we found these features made for absolute ease of movement, even on gravel.

Durability aside, this suitcase also stands out because you can choose the colors of everything from the front and back shell to the zippers, bindings, wheels, and more. We found this option for customization irresistible, but if you prefer to leave the aesthetics to the experts, there are also pre-designed colorways from which to choose. You can also opt to make the bag expandable. Either way, the interior is lined with 100 percent recycled fabric and includes a compression system with multiple dividers, straps, and zippered pockets.

After taking it on a few trips, our testers reported loving how expandable and easy to move the suitcase is and that it's easy to find on the conveyor belt after checking it onto a plane.

Dimensions: 26 x 17.5 x 10 inches | Weight: 9.3 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: Optional

Our tests revealed a winner in the Samsonite Freeform Carry-On , chosen for its impressive combination of performance and affordability. If you're looking for a checked bag that won't break the bank, go for the Kenneth Cole Out of Bounds Spinner .

All of the suitcases considered for this list underwent a stringent testing process in our laboratory. First, we weighed each one. Next, we packed each suitcase with a prescribed list of items intended to replicate what one might take on a seven-day fall sightseeing trip (for checked luggage) or a four-day trip (carry-on luggage). Our experts evaluated the bag’s capacity and organization features during this step. Next, we rolled at varying speeds through an obstacle course of cones and bumps to simulate navigating a busy airport.

We also rated maneuverability by rolling the suitcases on three different terrains: concrete, carpet, and gravel. We placed carry-on bags into a simulated overhead bin to check the fit and the placement and strength of grab handles. Finally, all bags were subjected to repeated drop and bat tests, targeting potential weak spots each time and noting any exterior or interior damage. Based on these tests, bags were scored from 1 to 5 for capacity, organization, maneuverability, durability, and value. These scores determined our category winners.

Tripsavvy / Vicky Wasik

Arlo Skye The Zipper Check-In Large : Our testers loved this case thanks to its generous capacity, stellar maneuverability, and high-end aesthetic. It proved very durable, though it did sustain some cosmetic damage during our tests, and the price seems steep for its slightly above-average performance.

BRIC's Bellagio V2.0 Carry-On Spinner Trunk : The V2.0 Spinner Trunk impressed us with its attractive and functional design and top-notch durability. However, our tester wasn't able to fit the toiletries from our pack list. This is a quality case and that is reflected in the price.

Briggs & Riley Sympatico Large Expandable Spinner : Capacity and durability were the highlights of the Sympatico, which easily fit a week's worth of clothing and multiple pairs of shoes before being expanded. We wondered how durable the handle would be over time and had to use some muscle to wheel the suitcase over the carpeted floor.

July Checked Bag : Stylish and well-designed with thoughtful touches such as an internal compression pad and a cloth bag to protect it during delivery, this medium-sized option has a lot going for it. Unfortunately, our bat test left numerous scuffs on the light-pink model we tested, and it had difficulty rolling on uneven terrain.

Paravel Aviator Carry-On Plus : The design, capacity, and maneuverability of the Aviator were all top-notch, and our tester loved that everything on our list fit with room to spare. It did show some scuff marks and blemishes, and though we think this is a great value, it isn't the cheapest carry-on on the market.

Tumi 19 Degree Continental Expandable 4 Wheeled Carry-On : We liked the unique look of this Tumi carry-on the most, as well as its capacity and design. The low points include the massive dent it sustained on impact, though it handled the drop test better. For its high-end price, we'd like to see better durability.

When choosing a hardside suitcase, it’s important to consider how much the empty bag weighs. Overly heavy luggage puts unnecessary strain on your arms, shoulders, and back when pulling it through the airport or lifting it in and out of your trunk. It also affects how much you can pack before exceeding airline weight allowances . In the past, heavy materials were synonymous with sturdy ones, but today, hardside shells made from lightweight polycarbonate, polypropylene, or ABS plastic offer outstanding durability without adding excess pounds to your luggage scale.

Increasingly, airlines charge for the privilege of checking luggage into the hold. As such, it’s becoming popular to limit oneself to a carry-on for all but the longest trips. Carry-on size restrictions vary from carrier to carrier, but as a general rule, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) suggests that suitcases should not be more than 22 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. If you’re looking for a checked bag, be aware that the IATA guideline says it should not have a linear length (height + width + length) of more than 62 inches.

Hardside luggage can feature several different materials, all of which have varying levels of strength and lightness. The most frequently encountered are polycarbonate and ABS plastic, with polycarbonate being the slightly heavier but more durable option. This is because it flexes upon impact and then pops back into place—making it less susceptible to cracks and dents. ABS is generally more affordable, however. Polypropylene is sometimes used in high-end suitcases for its superior lightness (it’s the lightest hardside material out there).

Hardside suitcases can be pretty basic—a shell with an interior pocket or two, wheels, and a handle. They can also be much more high-tech, with possible features ranging from integrated TSA-approved locks and weight indicators to fast-charge USB ports (the latter are only available for carry-ons due to airline regulations). Which of these are worth spending money on is up to you. However, quality spinner wheels, a handle with a cushioned grip and adjustable height settings, and the option for expansion are all ones we think would make traveling considerably easier.

Some people prefer softside suitcases because they are more flexible and therefore more forgiving if you have awkwardly shaped items to pack or tend to overstuff your luggage. They won’t dent or crack and are more durable for adventure travel. However, the construction of hardside cases has improved so much in recent years that they are now the top choice for many travelers. Their rigid shell protects contents from airline damage and potential tampering, they’re easy to wipe clean, and they typically offer a greater range of colors and styles.

Most hardside suitcases cost quite a bit, so it makes sense to take steps to protect them. Choosing a good bag in the first place is essential—quality materials and construction are inevitably best at withstanding rough handling. Be careful not to overpack or pack so that sharp or pointed objects come into direct contact with the shell since this will create weak points. You can also purchase a PVC cover to protect your bag from scratches and spills or have it plastic-wrapped at the airport before each flight. Finally, a TSA-approved lock allows airport officials to open your suitcase without damaging it.

You should always check individual manufacturers' guidelines before cleaning your hardside suitcase, as best practices may differ. Generally speaking, however, you can remove most dirt, stains, and superficial scuffs with a soft cloth or sponge and a little warm, soapy water. If you use soap, be sure to clean it a second time with plain water to avoid leaving any residue behind. Your suitcase should always be completely dry before being packed and stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

The 7 Very Best Hard-Side Suitcases

Not all hard-shells are created equal..

Portrait of Katherine Gillespie

In this article

Best hard-side suitcase overall.

  • Best less-expensive
  • Best lightweight
  • Best aluminum
  • Best for overpackers

As someone who has never managed to take a vacation without purchasing something bulky and delicate to take home with me (vinyl records, ceramics, bottles of wine — you name it, I’ve packed it), I often prefer hard-shell suitcases over soft-sided options. A hard-side suitcase will shield what’s inside of it from sudden drops or bangs, where a soft-side offers far less protection. Many of the experts I’ve spoken to agree: They say that hard-side suitcases are easier to wipe clean and slide from luggage racks. They’re harder to repair than soft-side suitcases; a crack will be fatal — but that’s what warranties are for.

Hard-side suitcases are usually made from either polycarbonate plastic or a plastic called ABS (but there are also some made from old-fashioned aluminum). Polycarbonate plastic is more durable than ABS, so it tends to cost a little more, but alongside my fellow Strategist travel writer Rachael Griffiths I’ve tracked down and tested cases made from both types of plastic that are affordable and reliable . We also asked more than 20 travel professionals about the brands and styles they recommend. While you’re here, I’ve also written guides to the best weekend bags and the best travel pillows .

Update on August 23, 2024:  Updated prices and checked stock for all products.

What we’re looking for

The material best for you will largely depend on the kind of trips you plan on taking. If your vacation involves long weekends at a friend’s beach house, you can get away with a lighter case made of less durable ABS. But if you’re plane- and train-hopping through Europe for the summer or spending several weeks trekking across Southeast Asia, you might want to invest in a sturdier case (like one made of polycarbonate) that can take a knock or two.

Longer trips need bigger suitcases. For ease of comparison, I’ve focused on carry-on options here, but most companies make these suitcases in larger sizes too. Size and weight allowances for carry-on cases will vary by airline, and most companies I looked into (including Alaska and Delta) measure the dimensions or weight of cases. You can read here to learn more about carry-on regulations.

Four spinner wheels glide in all directions and are my favorite. You can also buy suitcases with two wheels, but I find that the four spinner wheels glide so much easier — which is valuable when trying to reach an Airbnb on a cobbled street. So all the picks here have four wheels.

Pecorella says it’s important to do your homework when it comes to warranty because, once a hard-side case cracks, it’s pretty tough to repair. “This is what we tell our customers all the time: If you are a regular traveler, really look into the luggage brand’s warranty and see what they are covering and what they are not covering,” he says. All of the cases on this list have a lifetime warranty, which covers your case for life, or a limited lifetime warranty, which means your case is covered for a certain number of years.

Away The Carry-on

Material: Polycarbonate hard-shell | Capacity: 47.9 L | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

Made from thick polycarbonate, I’m impressed with how sturdy yet lightweight Away’s ubiquitous suitcases are. I’m more than comfortable with packing breakables inside of one and am always confident that its handles and wheels will survive the perilous trip from the cargo hold to the luggage carousel. Cute as well as functional, Away suitcases are available in bright colors as well as neutral ones, and any scratches can be touched up with the brand’s eraser, which is included with each purchase. Away’s hard-side luggage is available in a few sizes; I’ve been testing the Bigger Carry-on, which is the most popular. That’s because it has a huge 50-liter capacity, but it still fits inside most overhead bins . (Though on some budget and most European airlines, it’s too big to class as a carry-on — you’d have to opt for the smaller size.)

Design-wise, Away’s definitely not trying to reinvent the wheel. Its luggage has all the features that you’d expect, but each feature has been executed perfectly. The 360-degree spinner wheels, for example, “make light work of the cobbled London street I regularly drag it along,” says Griffiths. And the telescopic handle is remarkably sturdy, which means you can use it to occasionally give up and drag your suitcase up and down stairs.

Numerous Strategist staffers have owned and used Away suitcases for years and years. You can also just look around the airport for proof of durability: The brand switches up its colorways seasonally, but I frequently see long-discontinued shades on the baggage carousel or nestled overhead on flights.

Best (less-expensive) hard-side suitcase

Quince Carry-on Hard Shell Suitcase - 20 Inches

Material: Polycarbonate | Capacity: 40 L | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

Quince , the five-year-old start-up that seems to make a little bit of everything, recently added rolling luggage to its growing inventory . I’ve been testing out the brand’s carry-on-size suitcase as well as its larger, checked one, both made from the same durable polycarbonate that Away uses. In terms of weight and feel, Quince’s affordable suitcases are surprisingly similar to Away’s. When I nudged an Away Bigger Carry-on and Quince Carry-on across my apartment floor side by side, their wheels carried them about the same distance, and their retractable handles are almost identical in form and function. Both brands use YKK zippers and TSA-approved combination locks. Inside, the compression compartments and removable laundry bag are also essentially the same. And Quince recently introduced a limited lifetime warranty on its suitcases that offers protection against defects like broken handles and zippers — mimicking Away’s famous replacement guarantee.

Best ABS hard-side suitcase

Amazon Basics Hardside Carry-on Spinner Suitcase

Material: ABS hard-shell | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Capacity : 34 liters | Warranty: Limited warranty

A hard-side suitcase made from ABS rather than polycarbonate will always be the most affordable option. This Amazon Basics case is ideal for budget travelers, Griffiths says: “In my experience, it’s rare to find a case that costs under $100 that can compete with more expensive brands. I was surprised by how thick and sturdy the suitcase feels — it has a nice thud when you knock against the exterior.” As well as being thick, the exterior is  also scratch resistant , and the case also has a well-designed handle, smoothly rolling wheels, handles for comfort, and a built-in lock. The warranty is where this bag falls slightly short, though (and may explain the cheaper price tag): It’s only a three-year limited warranty that protects against defects in materials and workmanship.

Best lightweight hard-side suitcase

Rimowa Essential Cabin Case

Material: Polycarbonate hard-shell | Capacity: 36 L | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Five-year manufacturer’s guarantee

The Rimowa Essential line of suitcases was a very close second to Away — more than ten people mentioned the brand in our survey of the best rolling luggage — but it lost out on the top spot due to its price. This suitcase is less durable than the classic aluminum version, but it shares a long history: Rimowa was the first brand to release a polycarbonate suitcase in 2000, so it has had more than 20 years to perfect its design. And it’s a great mix of durability and weight: This carry-on is more than a pound lighter than Away’s Bigger Carry-On.

Owners we spoke with say the wheels glide through the airport like a dream. There’s a manufacturer’s guarantee of five years if you remember to register your product when purchasing it (otherwise, it only lasts for two). Even in those five years, the warranty only applies “if the usability of the product is considerably adversely affected by a material or manufacturing fault already present at the time of hand-over (defect),” the brand says. Breaks caused by “abrasion, improper use, faulty operation, or externally occurring forces” like cracks, breaks, and scratches caused in flight are not covered. There’s a lot of fine print with Rimowa, so I suggest looking into it before you purchase.

Best aluminium hard-side suitcase

Away Carry-On Aluminum Edition

Material: Aluminum hard-shell | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Capacity: 35 liters | Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

Aluminum cases are as durable as a hard-side case gets — they’re less likely to crack and usually use clamps instead of a zip (which can fall apart at the seams, burst, or even be slashed open). Several travelers I chatted with recommended the Rimowa case in aluminum for this reason. However, it costs well over $1,000 and doesn’t really do much beyond what this Away — which is half the price — does. The aluminum Away carry-on is similar to the polycarbonate one in many respects, from its great-quality handles and wheels to its ample storage space. One major difference is the lock, though: It’s still TSA-approved, but has the lock code on more secure clamps rather than a zipper. Travel writer Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon , who travels every single week for work, calls it her “work horse.”

Best hard-side suitcase for overpackers

 Béis The Carry-On Roller

Material: Polycarbonate hard-shell | Capacity: 49 - 61 L | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

I’ve included this case for its simply ingenious weight indicator. If you’re an overpacker, it takes a lot of the stress out of checking a bag. The indicator is activated when you lift the case, and a red mark will appear if the luggage weighs over 50 pounds — saving you from an unexpected fee at the airport. (This is especially important as the bag has an additional zipper that allows it to expand a couple of inches for squeezing an extra potentially heavy few bits inside.) Other great features include a built-in laundry and shoe bag, as well as several other pockets that help keep things organized and a TSA-approved lock. “They’ve really thought of everything,” says travel blogger Ciara Johnson.

Best hard-side suitcase for underpackers

Take Off Luggage 18-Inch Removable-Wheels Suitcase

Material:  ABS hard-shell  | Capacity:  31 L  | Wheels: 360-degree spinner, removable | Warranty:  One-year limited

I first learned about this teeny-tiny hard-side case while researching the best  personal-item-size luggage . It came recommended by  Jasmine Anderson  and  Natasha Wilson , travel agents and co-hosts of the podcast  Travel Fly Sexy , as well as packing expert  Lauren Kelly .   They all praise its snap-off spinner wheels that can slide miraculously into the cruelest of budget-airline baggage sizers. (“Frontier lately is charging people for wheels and handles sticking out of the sizers,” says Kelly. “That means $100 extra for each leg of the trip.”) Measuring 18 by 14 by eight inches, the suitcase’s rectangular shape maximizes space and allows you to use packing cubes: “I have put a laptop and a week’s worth of clothes in the Take Off,” says Anderson. Kelly agrees that “it will give you the most packing space if your goal is a weeklong trip where you pack a personal item only.” The suitcase comes with a small bag to put its wheels in while your bag is being sized by airline staff; you can also just stash them in your pockets. And yes, it will slide right under the plane seat in front of you, which means no competing for overhead bin space.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , we evaluate all kinds of popular luggage in the Textiles Lab, analyzing them for factors like durability, water resistance and ease of use. Plus, we share them with consumer testers who take them on their own trips and share real-world feedback. Over the years, we've tested luggage from more than 100 brands to find the best hardside suitcases on the market. We've put together a list of picks including lightweight, durable options and hard shell luggage with unique features that we think are worth it.

Samsonite's high-quality luggage has continued to perform well in our tests over the years , specifically in terms of durability during drop tests and ease of use. The brand's Freeform hardside suitcase is a favorite of our consumer testers who agree that its wheels roll smoothly and that the bag is easy to maneuver around twists and turns. It also received perfect scores in Lab tests for being a breeze to open and close.

Inside, a zippered panel and an adjustable cross strap keep your belongings in place, and we were able to fit our entire packing load in the bag with room to spare. Our consumer testers pointed out that the carrying handles are on the smaller side, but they still thought the bag was easy to pick up. There are three different sizes to choose from, or you can opt for a set including a carry-on and a checked bag for a cohesive look.

With more than 35,000 five-star reviews and a 4.5-star average rating, Amazon Basics' hardside luggage is a favorite of real users and GH analysts alike. When we tested this bag in our Textiles Lab, we found it to be spacious, and it received perfect scores for easy packing. Online reviewers agreed, saying that they can fill the suitcase with more than enough clothing and essentials for their trips.

The suitcase is made with ABS plastic, which isn't as durable as some other hard materials, but it is lightweight and keeps the price low. Testers appreciated the luggage's wheel performance, sharing that the bag is easy to maneuver, but they weren't as impressed with the telescopic handle and explained that it felt flimsier than other models they tried. This suitcase comes in three different sizes and is available in two and three-piece sets for an even better value.

Several of our Lab experts have been using luggage from uber-popular brand Away for years and have found them to stand the test of time. T his pick is made of polycarbonate material, which means it's lightweight yet durable. During Lab evaluations, we put its durability to the test and dropped the suitcase repeatedly from a set 3-foot height, noting no major signs of damage or prominent scuffing.

Our consumer testers thought the wheels on Away suitcases rolled smoothly and said they were easy to maneuver, but the telescopic handle isn't as sturdy as some other styles. In our packing tests, we were impressed by the compressive panels meant to keep your belongings in place and by the hidden laundry bag you can use to separate your dirty clothes. If you're unsure about splurging on a carry-on bag, Away offers a 100-day return policy for unused items.

July Carry On

Carry On

July's Classic hardside luggage has a simple yet sophisticated look, thanks to the smooth polycarbonate material with monochrome aluminum corners and real leather details. While it scuffed more than some other suitcases in our drop tests, the suitcase earned high scores overall for durability. The chic carry-on bag has a butterfly-opening with one zipper-enclosed side and one side with a compression panel and adjustable Y-strap to secure your belongings.

The telescopic handle has a unique contoured grip for comfort, and it locks into place at 20 different heights. One at-home tester commented, "I've tested many, many suitcases, but I've never used luggage that glided as smoothly as July's through an airport." Our in-Lab obstacle course testers agreed, rating July's bags highly for ease of use and its smooth rolling wheels, which barely make a sound as they roll over different surfaces.

Calpak Ambeur Collection 3-Piece Luggage Set

Ambeur Collection 3-Piece Luggage Set

For luggage that's equally as fashionable as it is functional, Calpak's Ambeur suitcases are a must-have. The hard shell bags are made with a blend of ABS plastic and polycarbonate that's both lightweight and durable, but we did find the metallic colors scuffed easily. In Lab evaluations, the luggage was dubbed our "tester favorite" because consumer testers were so wowed by the design and overall ease of use.

The telescopic handles aced our tests, with one tester sharing that it was the "smoothest handle by far" out of all of the bags available for testing. Other testers agreed, explaining that the padded handles were comfortable to lift, pull and push. Plus, the Ambeur luggage earned high scores in our packing tests.

If you don't need a set of three bags, you can opt for a two-piece set or choose from any of the five styles available.

Monos Carry-On

Carry-On

Monos' less-is-more approach to design results in a sleek, timeless look that our testers loved. The durable polycarbonate luggage may have a simple appearance but doesn't skimp on quality or useful packing features. Inside, you'll find two spacious compartments: one zipper-enclosed compartment and one with an adjustable compression panel. There are also additional zippered pockets inside for even more organized storage space.

The bag aced durability tests, resisting major dents and damages after being dropped repeatedly from a 3-foot height, but it did show some signs of wear in our scratch tests. When testers tried it in our luggage obstacle course, they were impressed by how easy the bag was to maneuver and how smoothly the spinner wheels rolled around twists and turns. Monos offers luggage sets for an even better value and a generous 100-day return policy.

In our Lab tests, Travelpro bags were easy to fill with a full load of clothing and travel gear like toiletries and shoes. They also performed well and earned high durability ratings. Testers loved the cushioned telescopic handles which lock at two different heights. We did find the carrying handles to be on the tighter side, which can make the bag difficult to lift into an overhead bin.

The bag unfolds to reveal two primary spacious packing compartments and two adjustable compression panels to keep everything securely in place. The bag unzips into one large packing space that's fully lined and contains three zip pockets for easy organization.

The bag utilizes Briggs & Riley's unique expansion system, which allows you to expand the bag for additional packing space and then compress it to its standard size once the bag has been filled — with just the push of a button. Our testers recently tried a softside bag from the brand with the same system and were blown away by how much they could fit inside, sharing that there was way more room than expected.

When we tested Briggs & Riley's hardside suitcases in the Textiles Lab, they performed well, receiving high scores for durability, water resistance and ease of use. Testers also shared that the brand's bags were easy to maneuver through our obstacle course and said the telescopic handles were sturdy. Although we didn't experience this issue, some online reviewers have shared that the zipper pulls are prone to breaking with regular use.

Other hardside luggage we evaluated

linebreak

We've tested more than 100 suitcases in recent years. Here are a few others we've evaluated that weren't featured but are still worth considering:

  • Beis Carry-On Roller : With convenient features like a weight indicator, a bag attach strap and a super-padded telescopic handle, this carry-on suitcase from Beis is popular online, but it scuffs easily and wasn't as durable as other bags we tested.
  • Delsey Chatelet Air 2.0 : It's chic with faux-leather details and wheels that glide effortlessly, but the carry-on bag is on the smaller side and doesn't expand. Our testers said they had to push its packing capacity to the limit – even on shorter trips.
  • Victorinox Airox Frequent Flyer Hardside Carry-On : One of the lightest carry-on bags we've ever tested, this suitcase from Victorinox has a T-bar shaped telescopic handle, which helps keep the bag's weight down. Although it isn't as comfortable to use as others we've tried.
  • Herschel Hardshell Carry On : This simple suitcase from Herschel aced our packing tests, but the telescopic handle and wheels just aren't up to par with other popular carry-on bags.

How we test luggage

double line break

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , we test luggage using specialized equipment in our Textiles Lab and with consumer testers . When we review luggage, we consider these factors:

  • Size and weight: In the Lab, we measure the size and weight of each suitcase to ensure that all online size claims are accurate. We place carry-on bags in a 22" x 14" x 9" area to see if they meet TSA size requirements.
  • Extra features: We make note of any additional features or components that make the luggage stand out, like carrying handles, built-in locks and telescopic handles that adjust to different heights.

textiles lab director lexie sachs opens a suitcase as a part of luggage testing

  • Ease of use: We rate how easy it is to zip and unzip each piece of luggage (pictured here) and consider the accessibility of any packing compartments. We also consider features like telescopic handles and wheels.

After packing each bag, we roll it over different surfaces including tile, carpet and hardwood and test the carrying handles by lifting the bag onto a countertop.

  • Packing: We fill each bag with a standard packing load for a two-night trip including clothing, accessories and toiletries (pictured here) and then score the suitcases based on how much they're able to hold.

  • Drop testing: Each piece of luggage is filled with a standard weight and dropped from a 3-foot height from different angles to mimic real use (pictured here). We then analyze the luggage for signs of damage like dents or cracks.

Whether you're a frequent flier or an occasional jet-setter, you'll always be glad to have sturdy, dependable luggage that safeguards your belongings. With a rigid frame, the hardside variety helps prevent things from breaking or crushing. It can also be easier to wipe clean than a softside design and has a sleek, modern appeal.

If you want the crème de la crème of hardside suitcases, you've come to the right place. But what makes a top-notch model? Besides a high-strength exterior that protects your stuff and withstands wear and tear, it's about maneuverability, capacity, standout features, and, yes, style.

The Travel + Leisure team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage, including checked bags and carry-ons , to see which ones stack up. During our various luggage tests, we pack the suitcases with clothes, shoes, and toiletries to see how spacious they are; spin them through obstacle courses to test the wheels and handles; and give them a few good whacks with a baseball bat to check durability. We also recreated an airplane set in our lab to lift carry-on suitcases into overhead bins, place them underneath seats, and roll them down carpeted aisles to see how portable and lightweight they are. These are our favorite hardside suitcases.

Best Overall

Delsey chatelet air 2.0 21-inch spinner.

The Chatelet Air 2.0 is super functional and durable, showing its worth after months of long-term testing across planes, trains, and boats.

It's not expandable, so you'll have to be a strategic packer.

The compact yet spacious design of this stylish carry-on features a zippered compartment on one side and compression straps on the other. While it doesn't expand, you can fit a decent amount of stuff inside (it has a generous 44-liter capacity) and have peace of mind knowing everything will stay in place. We like that there are multiple interior pockets, a removable pouch, and a USB port you can hook up to a portable charger . Even when packed full, the zippers open and close smoothly. Lastly, the four dual spinner wheels glided effortlessly across hard flooring, carpet, and even stone pavers.

This suitcase also passed our lab durability test with flying colors, sustaining no visible damage on the light-colored exterior after we hit it with a bat and shoved it off a table. Even better, the bag has held up great during a year of real-world testing. It's clocked thousands of airline miles during trips around the world, including stops in Costa Rica, Italy, Morocco, and Egypt.

"I brought this to Egypt and ended up checking it more than once, and it still looks beautiful and surprisingly clean," says T+L editor Taylor Fox . "We carried it on planes, trains, and boats, and it was easy to lift and maneuver throughout every situation."

Best Expandable

Away the carry-on flex.

This compact bag holds a lot thanks to its compression straps, zippers, and an expansion feature.

The flex feature adds an extra 2.25 inches of space, but it also makes the bag too large to qualify as a carry-on.

This Away bag has a surprising amount of space for a carry-on, with two large interior compartments (one on each side), compression straps, and dividers that keep your clothing from falling out when you open the bag (everything stayed in place even after we threw the bag multiple times off a table). While we were packing the bag during our lab tests, we loved how all of the interior zippers and pockets helped keep everything organized, allowing us to maximize space even without packing cubes. There is also a handy zipper expansion that adds an extra 2.25 inches of space, which is useful, but it does make the bag too large to use as a carry-on, and you’ll be forced to check it. Even when packed full, the zippers all ran smoothly, and we found it easy to maneuver the luggage over concrete tiles, carpet, and around our obstacle course full of bystanders. The wheels rotated smoothly throughout testing, and the bag will even roll on its own without getting stuck if you give it a shove.

Best Lightweight Carry-on

Samsonite omni pc carry-on.

The Samsonite Omni PC is just over six pounds, with an expandable capacity and a rigid exterior that won't dent or scratch.

The wheels can get caught in ruts, and it rolls a little better on two wheels than on four.

This lightweight carry-on weighed in at just 6.1 pounds and fit snugly into an overhead compartment. The dual compartments, pockets, and cross straps make it easy to pack and organize your stuff. There's also an expander if you need extra space. After whacking it with a bat, we can confirm its scratch-resistant, dent-defying durability.

This suitcase rolls smoothly and turns on a dime. And stuffing it full doesn't seem to make it any harder to maneuver. Having said that, the small wheels sometimes get stuck in grooves, and it's not as easy to push as most spinners. Still, we think the price is sharp and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to overpackers, frequent fliers, and anyone who doesn't want to worry about premature wear and tear.

Best Lightweight Checked

Samsonite black label cosmolite 3.0 large spinner.

Weighing in at 5.8 pounds, this is unbelievably lightweight for a large checked bag, helping maximize space without weighing you down.

It’s a large suitcase without many pockets or organizational features, so you may need packing cubes.

Samsonite redesigned its popular Cosmolite suitcase to have a new look and new features, including making it more lightweight than ever before. Weighing under six pounds, this suitcase is so light that the outer shell feels sort of flexible, and we were worried it wouldn’t survive our baseball bat test — but it actually came through with no scuffs, scratches, or dents, even after we hit the case, the wheels, and the exposed handle multiple times. Despite the size, it didn't feel cumbersome to roll over different types of terrain, and it rolled just as easily on two and four wheels whether you’re pushing it ahead of you or rolling it behind you.

The T-shaped handle is part of Samsonite’s redesign, and we thought it was even more comfortable to hold than a traditional suitcase handle, although it might not hold personal items with trolley pass-throughs as securely as a rounded handle. This suitcase is very roomy, but it doesn’t have many pockets or zippers for organization, so we’d recommend using packing cubes to keep your belongings in place. If you’re a heavy packer, this lightweight suitcase will help keep your checked baggage weight low while still giving you plenty of space to bring ample outfit options without having to scale back.

Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus

This suitcase has an attractive, vintage-inspired aesthetic, plus modern features for easy packing and organization.

Though it doesn't expand, it's one of the larger carry-ons we tried.

The Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus boasts a sophisticated, vintage-inspired aesthetic and modern features. Available in versatile neutrals and statement colorways, it has a polycarbonate shell with contrasting vegan leather accents. The exterior proved durable during our tests, showing only a few minor scuffs, which may not be as noticeable on the darker colors.

Though it doesn't expand, this is one of the larger carry-on suitcases we tried. It has excellent capacity with zippered compartments and a compression pad, allowing us to easily fit all items on our packing list. We also like that it comes with a laundry bag to keep dirty clothes separate. Not only that, but it was a piece of cake to maneuver on different types of flooring and around tight corners.

The Details: Carry-on | 8.5 pounds | 23 x 15 x 9.5 inches | 46.6-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels

Away The Trunk

This 107-liter trunk is extremely spacious, with a slimmer top lid and a deeper main compartment.

Make sure you pack the bag evenly on each side, otherwise it can feel lopsided.

A trunk is a stylish alternative to your typical clamshell suitcase — instead of splitting evenly down the middle, it has a 30/70 design with a thinner top half and a deeper main compartment. This is useful if you have any large or bulky items, making it easier to fit everything inside the spacious checked bag. We put the trunk to the test, gliding it through our obstacle course full of people and found that it maneuvers much smoother than a regular checked bag because of the taller rectangle shape. The trunk is surprisingly lightweight for its large size, but we did notice that it felt a little heavier on one side because of the way we packed it, so we recommend distributing your items evenly on each side so that it doesn’t feel lopsided. This was also the most durable piece of Away luggage we tested, surviving our table drops and baseball bat beating with nearly a scuff or scratch. Bonus points for the included sponge that you can use to wipe off any scuffs.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 12.1 pounds | 31.3 x 17 x 13.7 inches | 107-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Customizable

Roam the check-in.

This suitcase has an extremely resilient shell, water-repellent zippers, and a customizable colorblock design.

It's somewhat small for checked luggage.

When it comes to durability, the Roam Check-in is tough to beat. The rigid polycarbonate shell looks and feels sturdy, and it sustained exactly zero nicks, scuffs, or dents during our tests. For even more peace of mind, the exterior zippers are water-repellent — perfect if you're packing for a trip to London or any potentially rainy location. It's on the smaller side for checked luggage, but the expander gives you an extra couple of inches. While we were able to fit all the essentials for a four-day vacation, we would have appreciated a bit more space.

This midsize suitcase was easy to move around — even on gravel — and the handles come in handy when lifting it. The color block design is cool but not over the top and makes for a great way to spot your luggage at baggage claim . You can customize it if you're not a fan of the pre-curated colors or just want something entirely unique. It's definitely one of the more expensive options, but Roam backs it with a lifetime warranty.

Best Budget

Amazon basics expandable hardside 21-inch spinner.

This affordable carry-on is lightweight yet sturdy, with a scratch-resistant exterior and an unexpectedly spacious capacity.

There are limited color options, and it doesn't have any smart features or a TSA lock.

For something a little easier on your wallet, look no further than Amazon. The Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner has an extra-thick thermoplastic shell that promises to protect your belongings and resist scratches. We're pleased to report it showed no signs of damage from our bat hits and drop tests. It's easy to maneuver, even on carpeted flooring and over bumps.

We could fit every last item on our packing list, including shoes, clothes, jackets, and toiletries. There's also an expander that increases the capacity by 15 percent. This wasn't necessary for our test, but we appreciate that there's room to spare. Although this affordable carry-on suitcase doesn't have smart features or a TSA lock, it really exceeded our expectations. We'd love a few more color options but like the pared-down appearance.

Best Splurge

Rimowa original cabin.

Backed by a lifetime guarantee, this futuristic suitcase is impressively spacious, with a durable aluminum exterior and smooth-rolling wheels.

It's not expandable, and the metallic exterior is prone to scuffs.

When it comes to aluminum luggage , the Rimowa Original Cabin is a worthwhile investment if you can swing the steep price. Though it doesn't expand, this suitcase meets carry-on size limits for most airlines while still offering an impressive amount of interior space. We packed it for a four-day trip and easily fit several outfits, outerwear, and multiple pairs of shoes inside. Not only that, but the dividers help ensure everything stays securely in place.

Thanks to the smooth-gliding spinner wheels, we had no issue rolling this bag over hard floors, carpet, pavement, and even cobblestone. We can't say it's the lightest carry-on, but it's not super heavy, either. We could hoist it into an overhead compartment and lift it into a car when packed full. Our favorite thing about this suitcase might be the slick, futuristic design and high-end appearance. It's remarkably durable, too, sustaining zero damage during our in-cabin travel test. The brand backs the suitcase with a lifetime guarantee, but make sure to register your luggage as soon as you pull it out of the packaging.

The Details: Carry-on | 9.5 pounds | 21.7 x 15.8 x 9.1 inches | 34.8-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best With Removable Battery

July carry on.

This bag comes with an ejectable battery with a USB-C charger, and the telescopic handle features 20 different heights.

It doesn’t have an expander, and we wish there were more internal pockets for additional storage.

This carry-on is appropriately sized to fit in the overhead bin on standard airlines without feeling overly bulky or cumbersome. Though it doesn’t have an expander, it felt like it had a larger capacity than similarly sized carry-ons that we’ve tried. Our favorite thing about this smart suitcase is that it comes with a removable battery so you don’t have to live in fear of your phone dying when you can’t find an open outlet in the airport. While many smart bags have a charger, they don’t always include the battery as well.

The polycarbonate shell feels very durable, with reinforced bumpers that felt like they added an extra layer of protection against our drop tests, in which we threw the fully packed bag off a tall counter from different angles. The wheels rolled smoothly over both concrete and carpet, and the interior Y-strap compression system helped keep all of our belongings in place. We also loved that we could raise the handle to 20 different heights, making it comfortable to walk with no matter how tall or short you are.

Best for Staying Organized

Béis large check-in roller.

This checked suitcase has an enormous capacity, and zippered compartments, pockets, and even removable pouches for easy packing.

It's durable, but the exterior is prone to scuffing.

This checked suitcase is one of the biggest we tested. There was easily enough room for double the amount of stuff on our packing list — and that's without the expander, which adds another three inches to the depth. Beyond the enormous 112-liter capacity, the internal pockets and removable pouches helped us keep things organized, while the zippered compartment and compression straps ensured everything stayed in place. It also comes with a laundry bag for keeping your dirty clothes separated while you're away and a retractable strap to make carrying another piece of luggage easier . We did notice, over three months of testing, that the downside to the large size and helpful organizational features is that it's easy to overpack, leading to overweight luggage fees.

Considering how big this suitcase is, the smooth spinner wheels and padded handle make it super comfortable to maneuver. While this bag passed our durability tests without any dents or scratches, it scuffs pretty easily. However, the darker colors should conceal marks better, and you can wipe down the exterior to remove any scuffs as needed.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 11.5 pounds | 31.3 x 19.6 x 12.6 inches | 112-liter capacity | Expandable | 4 spinner wheels

Best Aluminum

Tumi 19 degree aluminum international carry-on.

This stylish aluminum bag is gorgeous, with Tumi’s signature contours on the outside and high-quality details inside.

This carry-on is heavy, weighing just over 11 pounds when empty.

Aluminum suitcases are supreme for their sleek look and durability. Though the Tumi 19 Degree Aluminum International Carry-on is one of the priciest options on this list, we think it’s worth the investment for its elegant appearance and luxurious details, like the contours in the frame and the leather-wrapped handles. Like most aluminum bags, this is heavy for a carry-on, but we thought the wheels rolled so smoothly that it was still easy to travel with. The bag held up pretty well when we hit it with a baseball bat, faring a little dent in one corner, but we’d recommend you avoid checking this bag whenever possible because aluminum tends to dent more easily than other materials.

If you’re trying to decide between this and a Rimowa carry-on, T+L associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker feels that the Tumi has better internal organization (including a hanger hook and two interior dividers that you can fully zip shut), while the Rimowa is a little more spacious and has better compression.

The Details: 11.2 pounds | 22 x 14 x 9 inches | 31-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels

We've tested more than 450 pieces of luggage in our New York City lab and on our airplane set to assess durability, capacity, maneuverability, design, and overall value. In line with the size of each bag, we packed them with enough essentials for a multi-day trip, including pants, shirts, underwear, socks, shoes, jackets, and toiletries, paying special attention to organizational features. We threw the bags off tables and hit the with baseball bats to test durability, ran them over different surfaces and through obstacle courses to test maneuverability, and lifted them into overhead bins to see how lightweight they felt. Following our lab assessments, we continue testing the bags in our real-life travels over a six-month period (and beyond!) to see how they perform long-term. Every few months, we test even more suitcases, and we will continue updating this article as we discover new luggage we love.

Other Hardside Luggage We Liked

These bags did not make our list of recommendations yet still stood out from the pack. They all had positive attributes, but a few things held them back.

Zero Halliburton Classic Aluminum 3.0 International Carry-on : This is one of the most durable suitcases we’ve ever tested, though it’s pretty similar in size and style to our Tumi pick for best aluminum bag. We ultimately included the Tumi instead because it’s ever-so-slightly larger and can hold more.

Kenneth Cole Reaction Out Of Bounds 28-inch Lightweight Durable Hardshell : This is a stylish, spacious suitcase at a fantastic price. The only thing that kept it from the winners list here is that it did not roll as well on gravel as some others.

Béis The Carry-on Roller : We love the organizational features and sophisticated look of this bag. If it rolled just a tiny bit better it would be up on our winners list.

Delsey Paris Chatelet Air 2.0 International Carry-on : This suitcase is conveniently compact, lightweight, and easy to maneuver. However, we found it to be too small for most trips, and the zippers are hard to close when it's packed full.

Bric’s Positano 27-inch Spinner : Inspired by the colors of the Italian coast, the Positano Spinner comes in three different shades of blue and green. We tested the 27-inch style, which is a great option for a midsize checked bag, though we wish it had more organizational features inside.

Tips for Buying Hardside Luggage

Remember durability is key.

Hardside luggage is about more than a sleek, modern appearance — though this is a welcome bonus. Suitcases with rigid shells are typically made of polycarbonate, a high-strength thermoplastic. This helps protect your belongings from impact, whether your belongings include a formal suit, a robust makeup collection , wine bottles, or camera equipment.

In addition to preventing things from crushing or breaking, hardside luggage is also easy to wipe clean. Having said that, lighter colors and matte finishes are sometimes prone to scuffing.

Don't overlook the interior and organizational features

When browsing options, don't overlook the interior. A suitcase should ideally have a spacious capacity, even if it's a relatively compact carry-on. Organizational features can make packing and accessing everything much easier, too, in addition to using packing cubes . This might include dual main compartments, dividers, zippered sections, a compression panel, various pockets, a shoe separator, a laptop sleeve, a garment sleeve, or a removable laundry bag.

Look for a lightweight design with good maneuverability

We also recommend looking for lightweight luggage , especially when carrying on. Note the empty weight before buying a hardside suitcase, as heavier models can make it harder to lift and roll when packed full. In terms of maneuverability, four spinner wheels are ideal. A locking telescoping handle will make pushing and pulling a jam-packed suitcase more comfortable. And grab handles will make it easier to lift into an overhead bin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hardside suitcases are the gold standard for many travelers. Besides the contemporary appearance, lots of folks appreciate how they protect what's inside. However, after testing more than 250 total pieces of luggage, we can tell you that a rigid shell doesn't always point to superior durability. Softside models are often just as resilient, and they tend to be more flexible if you need to stuff more items inside. While textile exteriors can be difficult to keep clean, they typically don't scuff as easily.

As noted, rigid suitcases can scuff, especially lighter colors and matte finishes. But they're generally very easy to clean . You can gently polish a suitcase with mild soap and water or a luggage-specific cleaning spray. If you're on the go or short on time, you can wipe it down with a pre-moistened disinfectant wipe or even a window-cleaning towelette.

Suitcase linings are sometimes removable and machine-washable. If not, you can likely wipe it down just as you would the outside, then leave it open so it can air-dry thoroughly. When in doubt, check the brand's care instructions.

Most hardside suitcases are made from sturdy plastic of polycarbonate that may scuff but shouldn't crack. Some hardside luggage — especially those made from less expensive materials — can crack over time, but durable bags should stand up to your travels. Many luggage brands now offer limited or lifetime warranties on their bags, so be sure to read their policies before buying if you're worried about potential damage.

Solgaard Carry-On Closet Original – Large

Rachael Hood | U.S. News

In the world of luggage there are many factors to consider: the price, the size(s) you'll want for your journeys and the key features. One of the first decisions to make is if you prefer hard-sided or soft-sided luggage . If you like a sturdy, sleek and water-resistant exterior that you can easily wipe off, a hard-sided suitcase may be your perfect match.

From carry-ons to checked bags, there are countless hard-sided luggage options. To help narrow the choices, our editors tested dozens of bags on a variety of trips and surfaces. Read on to find the best hard-sided luggage options, tested and reviewed by our team of travel experts.

Polycarbonate vs. polypropylene vs. ABS

  • Good – ABS: ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a durable, cost-effective material; however, it doesn't handle high temperatures or general misuse as well as its counterparts. ABS luggage works for those who travel infrequently.
  • Better – Polypropylene: Polypropylene is lightweight and durable but has a lower impact resistance than polycarbonate. It's also a more cost-effective option.
  • Best – Polycarbonate: Widely considered the best material for hard-sided luggage, polycarbonate is a hardy form of plastic. It's so durable that it's actually used in bullet-resistant glass. Polycarbonate luggage is essentially damage-proof.

What our editors say:

The built-in closet is a complete game changer. I love that I can pack the suitcase at home, and when I reach my destination I just pull up the closet and I can find everything with ease. The handle is also super comfortable, which is great for long travel days with multiple connections. – Rachael Hood, Senior Editor

The Medium can accommodate at least a week's worth of clothing or more, depending on how you pack. Inside you'll find interior compression and plenty of compartments for organization. Other features include an underside grab handle (especially useful when pulling your bag off the belt at baggage claim), 360-degree wheels and a TSA combination lock.

I like that this checked bag is just big enough, and that I never have to worry about it getting damaged by baggage handlers at the airport. – Amanda Norcross, Content & SEO Strategist

Textured exterior of Amazon Basics 20-Inch Hardside Spinner.

Erin Evans | U.S. News

The Amazon Basics 20-Inch Hardside Spinner in black.

Price: $80 or less

This affordable Amazon hard-sided carry-on piece is made of ABS, which means it's versatile and lasts even if exposed to inclement weather like rain and snow. The hard-sided textured design of this carry-on also means scuffs, scratches and dents are less likely to show on the exterior. Additional standout features on this bag include smooth double-spinner wheels, an additional zipper for expandability, interior pockets for organization and compression straps to allow you to fit as much as you need into it.

This is an excellent budget-friendly piece of carry-on luggage. I appreciate how well it's made, and the textured exterior has a cool look but is also functional in combating dings and scratches. The carry-on can squeeze in a respectable amount of clothes, shoes and accessories as well. – Erin Evans, Managing Editor

July Carry On Light in black against a sunny window.

Price: $245 or less

Combining durability with lightweight construction, the July Carry On Light is one of the lightest hard-sided suitcases on the market. The exterior shell is made of aerospace-grade German polycarbonate. The bag also features a twin bar three-stop telescopic handle and double spinner wheels for balance and durability. The interior is divided into two compartments, separated by lightweight zippered mesh panels, and completed with a water-resistant nylon lining.

I've tried a lot of lightweight luggage, and this suitcase surpasses all the other competition. It's extremely light, durable and holds a lot. Unlike other lightweight styles, the July Carry On Light doesn't tip over easily, and the quality of the construction is not sacrificed to make it lighter. – Rachael Hood

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner in cream on a pathway outside.

Leilani Osmundson | U.S. News

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner in cream.

Price: $369.99 or less

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner is a high-quality suitcase that packs a punch. Made with a 100% polycarbonate, ultra-strong shell, the bag also sports aluminum corner guards for extra protection. The expansion zipper grants an extra 2 inches of packing room and includes a pocket for holding a power bank (not included) to connect to charging ports on the side of the bag.

This Travelpro luggage is equipped with a range of other helpful features as well, like self-aligning magnetic wheels, a TSA zipper lock and more. Inside the bag you'll find two large compartments and three pockets, so you'll have plenty of room to fit all your belongings even before using the expansion zipper.

As someone who likes to be prepared (and thus tends to over-pack), I love how spacious this carry-on is. On a recent trip to Mexico, I was easily able to fit four pairs of sandals along with a week's worth of outfits – a couple of which were large, bulky dresses – on top of all my accessories and toiletries. – Leilani Osmundson, Senior Digital Producer

Which suitcase is better: hard or soft?

A hard or soft suitcase should be selected based on your travel needs. A soft suitcase has the benefit of weighing less, meaning that it is easier to carry from destination to destination, and also allows you to pack extra items without having to take a heavier suitcase into consideration. However, they offer less protection to your items, and are more likely to be worn down and fray with age and rough handling. A hard suitcase with a durable shell will last in good condition for years. A harder shell also protects your items, preventing leaks and other breakages.

Do airlines prefer hard or soft suitcases?

Airlines typically do not have preference over hard or soft suitcases. Airlines are concerned with weight and dimension of your luggage, rather than its physical appearance. A hard shell suitcase is typically less flexible and slightly heavier than a soft shell suitcase, so may be more likely to breach the airline’s specifications. Both types of luggage are commonly used as both check in and carry on, and airlines are well equipped to handle both. Choose a suitcase that best suits your travel needs and provides features that will make your transit most comfortable.

Family Travel Tips For Hassle-Free Holidays

Do we even need family travel tips? Well, yes, especially when you’re travelling with kids. Because, let’s face it, it can be a wee bit…scary. Afterall, it’s a very different scenario from your usual holidaying alone or with a friend or two.

Apart from trying to keep your kids entertained and well, you also have to factor in how not to bother others around you and how to keep every member on the same page.

With so many things to prepare for (even mentally!), you need a good collection of tips and advice to keep your family trip as fun, memorable, and happy as you’ve always wanted.

Family Travel Tips: What To Expect?

Before diving into the much needed family travel tips, let’s buckle up to go over what sort of things will likely happen when travelling with your family.

By having a clear picture of what to expect, you are better mentally prepared. It can also help you avoid disappointment and burnouts when things don’t go according to plan.

  • So many men, so many minds : family members may disagree on what a fun destination may be.
  • Budget constraint : catering to individual needs can be pretty expensive.
  • Childcare responsibilities : children need constant care, which can be a challenge on a trip since you have to make sure that you’re not sacrificing your own comfort and fun.
  • Health and safety concerns , especially with the elders and young kids, may require extra precautions and attention.
  • Packing may get overwhelming when travelling with young children.
  • Stay calm . Don’t lose your head, or worse, get into fights with your partner. Laugh, have fun; you’ll pull through.

In the end, young kids might not remember that lavish, exotic meal or the breathtaking scenery. But they will remember every time you sit down and talk to/play with them—or even when you step aside to take a work call.

They will remember sitting at the terminal, wishing they were at home right now but can’t due to a delayed flight. They will remember a simple burger at a roadside diner.

It’s these small, heartfelt moments that truly stick with them. And you are there, with them during those times. So be there for them .

After getting the right mindset, here comes the best part - the tips and tricks to take care of all these challenges.

Family Travel Tips For Easy-Breezy Itinerary Planning

Family Travel Tips - CabinZero

There are plenty of kid-friendly destinations to pick. Photo by travnikovstudio - stock.adobe.com

It’s hard enough to make an itinerary for yourself; now you have to consider your family members. But with the right strategies, the process can be much more streamlined and enjoyable.

Research For Family-Friendly Destinations

The first part, choosing where to go, requires more planning if you are travelling with kids. Countries with high safety indexes are a no-brainer. But if you want to go somewhere like, say Cancun, you’ll need to have a second thought. For more examples, Cape Town is a better family-friendly destination than Johannesburg if you want to visit South Africa. Sit down with your partner and plan carefully down to the last details.

Some family-friendly countries to get started : Norway, Japan, Iceland, Austria, Switzerland.

Fun For The Whole Family

Make sure everyone has their share of fun by including one or two activities that each member prefers. The key is to let everyone know each of them will get to do an activity/visit a place they love, and it should be fair for all members. Find destinations that fit everyone’s age, health, and preferences. It sounds difficult, but there are plenty of options:

  • The beach is a great place to start: the elders can relax on the sand; the kids can have fun in the sun with a ball game and lots of snacks. Then your whole family can join each other for a joyful lunch in a nearby restaurant or at a local market.
  • National parks are also full of family-friendly activities, such as camping, hiking and sightseeing. There are so many things you can do in one that can easily fill up a day.  A place like Costa Rica is great for family hiking or anything outdoor.
  • If you’re in a big city like London or Manchester , museums and art galleries are perfect. They are cheap (sometimes even free) and great for all ages.

Book Ahead (And In Bundle If You Can)

Make reservations for accommodations, attractions, and transportation, especially during high season. This can give you a peace of mind knowing everything is taken care of and you have time to focus on having fun. Besides, booking ahead and in a package may also land you those early bird deals.

Include (Lots Of) Nap Time And Breaks

Family Travel Tips - CabinZero

If you’re travelling with your little ones, take into consideration that even though they’re hyper, their energy also runs out pretty quickly compared to adults. Make plans that include their nap time and snack breaks as well.

For example, start the day with a visit to a theme park or the zoo. This will be followed by lunch, then a quick break back at the hotel or on the train to another city (if the kids are good on-the-go nappers).

Leave Some Room For Backups

Travelling with your family might not be as flexible as travelling alone or with friends. Not everyone in the family may be on board with sudden changes; sometimes, it’s not even possible with small children. When you plan, consider some alternatives everyone can agree with in case of last-minute surprises. Lower the bar and expect more downtime for everyone (public playgrounds and libraries are our favourites).

Packing Tips For Lightweight Family Travel

Travelling with kids and trying not to bring everything is harder than it sounds. To begin, ask yourself questions like these:

  • Where am I going, and what’s the weather like?
  • How long is my trip going to be?
  • What am I doing there?
  • Are there any activities that require a specific item?
  • Who am I packing for besides myself?

How To Pack Right

If you’re travelling with young kids, the last question is very important. To keep things clear and simple, the trick is to think in categories and stick to a formula .

The categories for virtually any kind of trip are:

  • Important travel documents
  • Personal items (such as money and medication
  • Activity-related items, and
  • Emergency essentials.

Once you’ve worked out a checklist for each category, you can get even more lightweight by working out how many items you need to use in a day. For example, 2 outfits a day, which means 2 tops and 2 bottoms. But a pair of jeans can be reworn for more than 1 day, then you’ll only need 2 tops and 1 bottom for 1 travelling day.

Get A Backpack That Is Good For Playing And Travelling

Family Travel Tips - CabinZero

The key to a lightweight family trip is a nice backpack.

To save even more space and keep things flexible for your family holiday, consider a backpack with great duality . Think something you can pack to the brim to be on the move, then unpack to carry only essentials while you explore your dream destination. Check our range of CabinZero travel backpacks here .

Essentials For Travelling With Children

Besides the regular travel essentials, here are some items you might need for a kid-friendly holiday.

  • Pack plenty of snacks and drinks for kids during long journeys
  • Bring a variety of entertainment, such as books and toys
  • For better sleep in new places, bring their favourite stuffed toys or blanket
  • Don’t forget the necessary medications
  • Extra clothes and/or diapers
  • Consider bringing a baby stroller or carrier
  • Remember to bring necessary child travel documents .

Learn Packing Techniques For Family Travel

Rolling clothes can save a lot of space, and there are fewer chances of wrinkles, too. Small items like socks, ties, and scarves can be stored in pockets of jackets and jeans.

Packing cubes are better for categorising items. If you’re packing baby formula and bottles, a waterproof and secure packing cube can save you from that possible spillage.

How Will You Prepare Children For A Trip?

When planning a family holiday with kids, it’s important to understand that you’re planning for them and yourself at the same time.

While it may be a bit overwhelming for first-timers, preparing the kids for the dream family trip may be some of the most precious memories you can make with them.

Let Them In On The Plan

Involving the kids is one of the best family travel tips. They can share their preferences, which can make the whole itinerary planning step easier. Also, it can create a sense of anticipation and excitement.

Prep Their Taste Buds

One of the best parts of travelling is getting to experience a new cuisine. Though, it can be quite a struggle for the little ones to adapt to new flavours. Getting them familiar with the cuisine of your destination a week or so ahead, either by cooking for them or ordering.

Family Travel Tips - CabinZero

Even something as simple as french fries may taste different aboard. Photo by famveldman - stock.adobe.com

Adjust Their Sleep Habits

Let them go to sleep or wake up at a different time some days before the trip to get them used to the new time zone. Usually, three to five days is a good length to create a sense of habit. At the same time, try to slowly get them to sleep without their comfort toys, especially ones that are too big to bring on a trip.

Motivate them

The young one may find the chaotic world of the airport overwhelming (even we grown-ups struggle sometimes ). But you’d be amazed at how kids stay patient through long walks to the gate and keep their spirits up as the immigration line inches forward with a chocolate bar or a few snacks. Sometimes, it’s the small comforts that make all the difference.

Transportation Options For Toddlers - Flying Or Driving?

Family Travel Tips - CabinZero

All children behave differently on flight and in a car. Photo by Friends Stock - stock.adobe.com

To drive or fly with a toddler on a long trip has never been an easy question. It boils down to one thing - your child’s tolerance. Some kids enjoy car rides; some don’t.

Both have their ups and downs.

Car rides may seem less of a hassle because of the privacy and freedom of stops, but it’s harder to keep them occupied and entertained. There’s not much you can do in a car. You can’t reach over, can’t hold them comfortably, or play with them. And there is a lot more space for them to move around, too.

Flying, on the other hand, may make some parents’ worst nightmare come true - bothering other passengers with noise. Acquiring the right documents can also be a hassle, and that’s not to mention the luggage. But, travel time is shorter, and kids have more access to entertainment.

Bottom line is : It depends on the child. If your little one is usually not fussy and can behave well in crowded places, consider flying to save time. If you prefer car rides, look for ways to keep kids entertained and avoid foods that can give them the energy spike.

How To Keep Kids Entertained On A Long Journey?

It’s never 1 solution. Keeping kids entertained during a long family trip is all about mixing up a lot of things. So, as a heads up, you are going to have to pack a separate bag of stuff your child can use/play with and prepare a day or two before the trip.

Pack Their Favorite Toys, Games, Books, And Snacks

For an excited toddler, there are not many things that can hold their attention for long. But even just 15 minutes of them having something to do is better than nothing except the constant “are we there yet?”.

If physical games don’t work, try mixing in verbal games. For example, ask them to count how many churches or restaurants you drive by. While this may not be the most fun, it may be able to get them to fall asleep easier.

CabinZero’s tip : don’t give them everything to play with all at once. It helps build excitement and curiosity.

Plan Plenty Of Stops

Family Travel Tips - CabinZero

A short change of scenery can help kids in long car rides. Photo by vitaliymateha - stock.adobe.com

Even adults get bored of sitting in one place for too long. If you’re travelling with a car, it’s better to stop either for food or just getting some fresh air once every 2-3 hours. You can also look for playgrounds or parks along the way.

For those who are flying, we know this might not be possible for everyone, but if budget is not a concern, you can consider a trip with a connecting flight. That is, if you feel comfortable, and the layover is in an enjoyable destination. Then you can plan a mini layover-trip for you and your family.

Choose The Right Seat

Some airlines allow your family to sit together for free, while some don’t. If possible, you can pay for seat selection to choose the best seats for everyone. Either way, you should inform the airlines and crew that you’re travelling with children and request assistance.

  • Window vs. Aisle Seats : Younger kids might enjoy sitting by the window to watch the clouds, while older kids might prefer an aisle seat for easier access to the restroom.
  • Front or Back of the Plane : The front of the plane usually deboards first, which can be a time-saver if you have a connecting flight or simply want to get off quickly. The back of the plane, however, is often quieter and may have more open seats.
  • Bulkhead Seats : These seats often provide extra legroom and are ideal for families with small children who might need more space. However, they may not have under-seat storage, so be prepared to stow your belongings in the overhead bin.

Download Content Beforehand

In-flight entertainment can be hit or miss, and not all airlines offer Wi-Fi on board —especially on shorter or budget flights. It’s wise to download everything for offline viewing before you take off (streaming platforms may require an internet connection for account verification, even to access your downloaded content). Don’t forget to bring portable chargers and a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones.

Family Travel Tips For A Safe Trip

Family Travel Tips - CabinZero

Family trave tips to stay safe and worry-free. Photo by MNStudio - stock.adobe.com

When you’re travelling with younger members, it should be a top priority to take precautions and learn safety travel tips. Here are some you will need before going on your next dream family holiday.

Someone Will Get Sick

Travelling, while fun, can get rough on the body. It’s inevitable that someone will get sick. Thus, the first thing to do is to pack an emergency kit . Or two and three if your family is large. It should have essentials like bandages, antiseptic wipes, painkillers, and any necessary medications. Last but not least, but somehow usually overlooked, note emergency and local medical services contacts in case of an accident or illness.

Mind What You Eat And Drink

Remember to. Trying a new cuisine is always fun, but if you’re not used to a certain herb or spice, your tummy may protest. Tap water in various countries is not safe for drinking. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink regularly throughout the day. However, make sure the water is safe to drink—if in doubt, stick to bottled or filtered water.

Stay Informed

Take precautions and get any medication/vaccination required upon entering for both you and your family members. It’s important to read the news about the place you’re planning to go. And even if you think it’s safe, always trust your gut instincts and listen to the locals.

Buy Travel Insurance

Unexpected events can happen, and that’s where travel insurance comes in. If your family plans to participate in activities like skiing, scuba diving, or hiking, make sure your travel insurance covers these adventures. No matter what you choose, always read over all the policies to make sure you are covered when the unthinkable happens.

Use Your Common Sense

Family Travel Tips - CabinZero

Research your destination and use travel common senses . Even the safest place is not 100% free of crimes. Especially for tourists, there are always going to be petty crimes, like pick-pocketing and scams, to watch out for. Don’t go to secluded areas late at night, and do not leave your belongings unattended.

CabinZero’s tip : keep precious belongings like money and phones in a hip bag/bum bag . When you’re in a crowded place, wear it underneath your shirt.

Also, stick together and have a communication plan in mind. Some members may want to wander off on their own, so what you can do is to make sure everyone knows each other’s whereabouts at all times and know who to call in case of an emergency.

TO SAFELY TRAVEL WITH CHILDREN , be sure to:

  • Teach them basic safety rules and to use emergency contacts
  • Keep a close eye on them at all times
  • Dress children appropriately for the culture and the weather

History of Pskov

Foundation of pskov.

According to archaeological excavations made in the northern part of the Pskov Kremlin, people already lived in this area about 2,000 years ago. The official date of the foundation of Pskov is considered to be 903 - the year of the first mention of the town in the chronicles.

Until the 12th century, Pskov was part of Kievan Rus. After the proclamation of the Novgorod Republic in 1136, Pskov came under its rule. Novgorod and Pskov had common military interests. Several times the Novgorodians and Pskovites had to defend themselves from military campaigns of the Polotsk Principality and attacks of the neighboring Baltic tribes.

In 1240, Pskov was surrounded by the troops of the Teutonic Order. When they were about to lift the siege and retreat, boyar Tverdilo secretly opened the gates of the town at night, hoping to seize power in Pskov with the help of Germans. For one year and a half, Pskov was in the occupation of the Teutonic Order. In 1242, Pskov was liberated by the army of Alexander Nevsky. The constant danger that threatened Pskov from the west forced to strengthen its fortress.

After the Battle on the Ice (1242), their common enemy, the Teutonic Order, no longer posed a threat to Novgorod. Thus, military ties between Pskov and Novgorod were ceased. In 1348, the Bolotov Treaty was signed, according to which the Novgorod Republic recognized the independence of the Pskov Republic. In 1397, the people’s veche (the highest legislative body of the Pskov Republic) adopted the first edition of the Pskov court charter - a set of laws.

More Historical Facts…

Pskov in the 15th-18th centuries

In 1425, the Pskovites began to mint their silver coins. The craft in Pskov was less developed than in Novgorod, but there were a lot of skilled craftsmen here too: blacksmiths, masons, tanners, potters, jewelers. The Pskov merchants traded with the Baltic towns and Lithuania, as well as with other Russian towns, especially with Moscow.

The people of Pskov sold flax, leather, fish, honey, wax, furs and bought salt, cloth, iron, metal products, and other goods. The development of trade in Pskov led to the creation of its own monetary system.

From 1461, power in Pskov was concentrated in the hands of Moscow governors. By the end of the 15th century, the population of Pskov was more than 30 thousand people. In 1510, Pskov formally voluntarily, but in fact under the threat of the use of military force, was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Moscow. The veche bell, the symbol of Pskov independence, was taken to Moscow.

Pskov became a western outpost on the way to Moscow. It also continued to be a major trade and craft center of the Russian state. Various branches of handicraft were developed in Pskov: metalworking, woodworking, processing of plant and animal raw materials, pottery and construction crafts. Large fairs were held in Pskov twice a year, in January and May. Pskov was an important transit point, through which flax, canvas, leather, and cloth were exported, and metals and industrial products were imported.

The Pskov Fortress played an important role in the Livonian War (1558-1583). In August 1581, Polish troops besieged Pskov. After a six-month siege and numerous unsuccessful assaults, Stephen Bathory, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, was forced to start negotiations. His plans for a further campaign against Novgorod and Moscow were thwarted.

During the Great Northern War (1700-1721), Pskov again played an important role in the military history of Russia. In the winter of 1700-1701, the Russian regiments defeated near Narva were withdrawn to Pskov. For a time, it became the main base of the Russian army.

After this war, Pskov ceased to be an important trade and defense center of Russia. As a result of the war, the Russian borders moved far to the west, and the need for a powerful fortress disappeared. With access to the Baltic Sea, Peter I laid St. Petersburg in the Neva delta, and Russia also received the large coastal towns of Riga and Revel, where all foreign trade shifted. Pskov became an ordinary provincial town.

Pskov in the 19th-21st centuries

In 1811, the population of Pskov was about 9,300 people. During the 19th century, the role of Pskov as a town-monument grew. Over 50 churches, chapels and monasteries, medieval civil stone buildings, old dilapidated fortress walls gave the town a special beauty. In 1859, the construction of the railroad boosted the local economy and expanded trade.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the population of Pskov was about 30 thousand people. In 1904, the first power plant was built. In 1912, tram traffic was opened. In 1915, during the First World War, the front line was only 250-300 km away from Pskov. The headquarters of the Northern Front, reserves, hospitals, and logistical services were located in Pskov. The city received tens of thousands of wounded, prisoners of war, and refugees.

On March 2, 1917, Nicholas II, the last Russian emperor, signed a manifesto abdicating the throne in favor of his younger brother Mikhail on the royal train detained at the Pskov station. During the Civil War in Russia, the power in Pskov changed several times. In 1939, the population of Pskov was 60,439 people.

From July 9, 1941 to July 23, 1944, during the Second World War, Pskov was occupied by German troops. At the time of the capture of Pskov, only 10-12 thousand civilians remained in the city. Concentration camps for Soviet prisoners of war were organized here, in which over 200 thousand people died.

On February 4, 1944, the Germans issued an evacuation order. 11 thousand people of Pskov were taken to the Baltic States and Germany, of which about 3 thousand died on the way. On July 23, 1944, the troops of the 3rd Baltic Front entered the practically empty city. Most of Pskov was destroyed, both residential and administrative, industrial buildings, architectural monuments were damaged, bridges and roads were blown up.

On August 23, 1944, Pskov became the center of the newly formed Pskov Oblast. In 1945, Pskov was included in the list of the 15 oldest cities that were subject to priority restoration. By 1950, the main stage of the restoration work was completed. From the late 1950s, Pskov began to develop as a large industrial center. On September 26, 1958, in Pskov, the first birch bark letter was found, dating from 1180-1200 years. In 1959, the population of Pskov was 81,270 people.

In 1989, its population was 203,789. With the collapse of the USSR, a large number of factories were closed, the city’s economy fell into decay. In 2010, Pskov was awarded the honorary title “City of Military Glory”. In 2019, the monuments of medieval Pskov were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Pskov - Features

Pskov is one of the most beautiful and old cities in Russia, which has preserved a lot of unique architectural monuments of the 12th-16th centuries. It is located in the north-west of the country in the center of the Pskov lowland. There are two rivers flowing in the city: the Pskova and Velikaya.

The name of the city is associated with the Pskova River. There are different versions of the origin of the name of the city and the river. According to one of them (Slavic origin), the name Pskov (Pleskov, Plskov) comes from the Old Russian word “ples” - a part of the river between two bends - or from the word “pesok” (“sand”).

The climate of Pskov is transitional from moderately maritime to moderately continental, with mild winters and warm summers. The average temperature in January is minus 6.3 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19.2 degrees Celsius.

Distances from Pskov to the nearest large cities: St. Petersburg (290 km), Riga (280 km), Tallinn (330 km), Moscow (730 km). Pskov is a large transport junction, which is easily accessible both by rail and by highway. Buses and minibuses are used as the main public transport in Pskov.

Today’s coat of arms of Pskov is based on the historical coat of arms of the city. The leopard symbolizes the readiness to meet enemies fully armed, the courage of the Pskovites. The blessing hand means the protection of the heavenly forces enhancing the defensive potential of the leopard.

Pskov is a unique old Russian city. Some of the oldest monuments of fresco painting in Russia have been preserved here. Monuments of old Pskov are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Pskov Kremlin, medieval chambers of merchants, graceful Russian churches, monasteries standing on the steep banks of the rivers, defensive towers, interesting museums and monuments - all this creates a unique look of Pskov and attracts a lot of tourists.

Only within the borders of Pskov there are more than 50 churches, mainly of the 14th-15th centuries. The Pskov land also traditionally attracts a lot of pilgrims. Practically in all historical buildings of Pskov you can find museum expositions.

Excursions that you can buy in Pskov (there are about 7 sales points for excursions in the city, two of which are located in the Pskov Kremlin area) or in advance through a travel agency, are divided into three main types - historical (for example, “Princess Olga and the Pskov Land”), military (mainly about the events of the Second World War), and religious (the monasteries of Pskov and the surrounding area).

Today, old crafts are revived by Pskov craftsmen. Thanks to their knowledge and skills, original souvenirs with Pskov themes and motives are created. Traditional Pskov crafts are hand forging (forged candlesticks, nails, staples, and numerous other blacksmith products) and ceramics (pots, mugs, jars, whistles, handmade toys). All of these can be found in local gift shops.

Main Attractions of Pskov

The Pskov Krom (Kremlin) - the historic and architectural center of Pskov, one of the symbols of the city, a great example of old Russian medieval defensive architecture located at the confluence of the Pskova River into the Velikaya River. On an area of 3 hectares, you can see a large number of architectural monuments including the monumental 78 meters high Trinity Cathedral (1699) - the only large church in Pskov that has survived to this day.

The difference between the Pskov Kremlin and the fortresses of Tver, Moscow, Smolensk, and other Russian cities is that it was not influenced by Italian architecture. The fortification was built in a brutal, solid style, characteristic of the independent Pskov Republic of the 14th-16th centuries. The height of the walls is 6-8 meters, the length - about 1 km.

On the territory of the Pskov Kremlin there is the only administrative building of the 17th century preserved in its original form - the Order Chambers (1693). Today, this federal cultural heritage site is used as an exhibition and cultural center of the Pskov Historical, Artistic and Architectural Museum-Reserve. The expositions recreate the atmosphere in which medieval Russian administrative work was carried out.

Pogankin Chambers - a stone residential, warehouse and industrial building constructed in the 1670s, a monument of history and culture of federal significance. Inside you can find several exhibitions including a collection of icons created in Pskov in the 14th-17th centuries. The Pskov school of painting is recognized as a completely original artistic phenomenon of old Russia. There is also a collection of silverware here. Nekrasova Street, 7.

Gremyachaya Tower (1525) - the tallest stone tower in Pskov (29 meters) and one of the symbols of the city. A lot of urban legends are associated with this tower. The most famous one is about the prince’s daughter walled up in it. Only those who are not afraid to spend 12 consecutive nights in the tower reading the Psalter can free her. In addition to the princess, the brave person will receive barrels of gold, the ringing of which is heard by the Pskovites at night here. Gremyachaya Street, 8.

Menshikov Chambers - a complex of buildings of the 17th century that was the ancestral home of Semyon Menshikov, the headman and richest merchant of the Pskov land. The snow-white architectural ensemble is made of limestone and consists of three-storey and two-storey buildings connected by underground galleries. Today, there are souvenir shops selling ceramics, thematic books, as well as a pottery museum here. There is a permanent exhibition of contemporary Pskov artists in one of the buildings. Sovetskaya Street, 50.

Mirozhsky Monastery - a monastery complex of the 12th century located on the bank of the Velikaya River. It is famous for its unique preserved pre-Mongol frescoes, which are open to the public only in dry weather. In the Middle Ages, this monastery was the cultural center of Pskov. Mirozhskaya Embankment, 2.

Arboretum Mirozhsky Park - a great place to walk located near the Mirozhsky Monastery. The most beautiful place in the park is a pond with an artificial island where wild ducks nest all year round. Yubileynaya Street, 1?.

Cathedral of the Nativity of John the Baptist - a picturesque church located on the left bank of the Velikaya River, opposite the Pskov Kremlin. The appearance of the building strikes with restraint and monumental simplicity, contrasting with most of the Pskov churches. Details of the external decor are practically absent. For several centuries it was the burial vault of the Pskov princesses. Over the centuries, the soil around the church rose. Today, its floor is almost one meter below the ground level. Maksima Gorkogo Street, 1.

Church of the Epiphany - one of the most famous churches in Pskov. This picturesque asymmetric monument of history and culture of federal significance of the 15th-16th centuries is located on the right bank of the Pskova River. Gertsena Street, 7.

Apartment-museum of Vladimir Lenin . The museum is located in the apartment building of the merchant P. Chernov on the former Arkhangelskaya Street (today, Lenina Street, 3), on the third floor. From March to May 1900, Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) rented a room here. In 2001, the museum became part of the Pskov Museum-Reserve and was supplemented with exhibits about the life of the Pskov region and Pskov in the late 19th - early 20th centuries.

Monument to the Pskov Paratroopers (The Canopy) . On February 29, 2000, at the height of the Second Chechen War, in the Argun Gorge, an armed clash took place between large forces of Chechen separatists retreating from the encirclement and a detachment of Russian paratroopers made up mainly of the 6th company of the 2nd battalion of the 104th paratrooper regiment of the 76th Pskov division.

In the desperate battle, the defending paratroopers displayed heroism, but the opposing forces were too strong. Almost all of the paratroopers were killed in action. The dramatic course and outcome of the battle caused a significant resonance in Russian society. For this feat, 22 of them (21 - posthumous) were awarded the title of Hero of Russia, 69 soldiers and officers were awarded the Orders of Courage (63 - posthumous). The monument looks like a snow-white metal canopy of a parachute over a pedestal stylized as a mountain peak. Leningradskoye Highway, 222.

Mikhailovskoye Museum-Reserve - a memorial complex and an extensive park area located about 115 km away from Pskov, a federal cultural heritage site dedicated to Alexander Pushkin, one of the greatest Russian poets. The grave of Alexander Pushkin is located on its territory. There are several estates with parks, estates of the poet’s relatives and friends, museums, remains of old settlements, picturesque meadows and lakes.

The questions of our visitors

Great question! Today, there are different opinions about which animal was originally depicted in the coat of arms of Pskov. The motif used in the Pskov coat of arms to this day was formed, apparently, even before joining the Moscow principality.

On the coins and seals of the Pskov Republic, the "fierce beast", apparently a representative of the cat family, appeared approximately in the 1460s. Subsequently, Moscow princes and Russian tsars continued to use it as the emblem of Pskov.

The "List of all state seals" of 1626 has the following description of the Pskov coat of arms: "The Pskov seal: a leopard, land under the leopard." In the decree of 1666 on the making of the banner of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, there is such a description: "The Pskov seal, a lynx running on it." Nevertheless, most sources call the beast placed in the coat of arms a leopard. Check the following auto-translated article about the transformation of the coat of arms of Pskov with a lot of pictures.

Pskov: Russia’s most underrated tourist destination

big travel hard case

Even older than Moscow

Pskov was first mentioned in the chronicles in 903, more than a century before Moscow was founded. And throughout its rich history it had many turbulent times.

Situated not far from the Estonian and Latvian borders, Pskov was a major trade center and an important point of defense for ancient Russia. Just like many other ancient cities, Pskov lost its powerful and strategic status in the early 18th century when St. Petersburg was founded.

During World War II the city was for three years occupied by the Nazis who left most of the historical buildings in ruins and pillaged museum treasures.

Today, Pskov is a modern city where it’s nice to walk and dine. There are great embankments and restaurants in old boyar mansions - an unforgettable experience. And for sure you won’t regret sampling and experiencing the local culture.

Impressive kremlin, a witness of past glory

The first place to visit is the local kremlin, aka Pskov Krom. It could be the perfect place for shooting Game of Thrones, especially the Winterfell scenes. The city’s oldest part, the kremlin, is situated high on the picturesque spit of two rivers: Pskova and Velikaya.

The most impressive feature in addition to its location and surroundings is certainly the citadel’s walls, up to eight meters high and to six meters wide. Up on the walls are passages where one can walk (and take stunning pics with the river view), and a restaurant right inside the wall.

Among the must-see sights inside the kremlin are the medieval ruins. In the 14th century Pskov was one of several independent republics in the lands of ancient Russia, and there was a place for a popular assembly, known in Russian as veche .

The white and most attractive building inside the citadel is the Trinity Cathedral, dating to the 17th century. It has one of the highest and largest iconostasis in the whole of Russia!

Ancient churches and sites saw turbulent times

Literally on every corner you’ll find ancient churches. In fact, there are so many that it’s impossible to visit all; you’ll even grow tired making pictures and trying to keep in mind which church has which name!

Ten of Pskov’s ancient cathedrals, monasteries and architectural sites are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The oldest among them is the ensemble of the Mirozhsky Monastery dating to the 12th century.

Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior in the Mirozhsky Monastery

Other must-visit churches from the list are the Church of the Archangel Michael with a bell tower from the 14th century, and St. Basil the Great on the hill, dating to the 15th century.

To the west of Pskov is the town and fortress of Izborsk. In the 13th century it withstood several attacks by the Livonian knights. But what is even more interesting is that the area is considered to be sacred. Not far from the fort’s walls, multiple springs flow from the hillside. Orthodox Christians believe the water is holy, and walk there to gather some.

Another great site to visit is the huge and impressive monument to Alexander Nevsky and the Battle on the Ice, which took place in 1242 on Lake Peipus (known in Russian as Pskovo-Chudskoye Lake), and which is located on the Russia-Estonian border. Prince Alexander Nevsky defeated the Livonian Order, and many enemy knights fell through the ice and perished.

In the movie Alexander Nevsky the legendary Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein tried to recreate that battle, using stage sets instead of real ice, of course.

Pushkin Hills, a place where Russian literature was born

Almost 70 miles far from Pskov you will see true heaven on earth. Here, you will find three magnificent noble estates with parks and the Russian idyllic countryside.

Pushkin Hills - Trigorskoye estate

These places are connected with the life of the great poet Alexander Pushkin; Mikhaylovskoye was his family estate, while Petrovskoye and Trigorskoye were owned by his relatives and friends. In 1824, he was sent to exile here, and within two years wrote his best poems and works.

Other destinations

  • 57.016667 28.916667 1 Pushkinskie Gory (Pushkin Hills) - a former Pushkin's mansion and its surroundings converted into a large open-air museum with breathtaking scenery and traditional Russian ethnic elements. An excellent weekend destination.

Despite the proximity of the border with Latvia , Estonia and Belarus , in socio-economic terms, the Pskov Oblast is the most underdeveloped among all the Oblasts of Russia (only among the Oblasts), and the most backward region of Central Russia. There is practically no industry here, and agriculture is poorly developed.

An ancient region of Russia which once constituted its own republic, Pskov Oblast is a great weekend trip or longer from Saint Petersburg . Tourist infrastructure is at best rudimentary, although one would expect this will change in the near future, but the region has lots to see for an adventurous traveler or a traveler with a good guide. Pskov, the capital, is without a doubt the principal attraction and likely the only stop for most travelers, but it might be a good plan to get out of the city and check out nearby Izborsk.

See Russian phrasebook .

Two daily buses depart for Pskov from Novgorod at 08:30 and 16:00.

Trains from Saint Petersburg are unfortunately very inconvenient — they leave around 03:00 and arrive in Pskov four hours later. A better option is to hop on a bus from Petersburg's Vitebsky Vokzal; there are 15 buses bound for Pskov daily and they take about 5 hours to get there.

There is a daily overnight train from Moscow which leaves around 20:00 and arrives in Pskov around 08:00.

Pskov Airport ( PKV   IATA ) from Moscow and Sochi.

Pskov is a common last stop in Russia for visitors traveling overland to the Baltic states .
