Essential Britain & Ireland

I’ve just returned from this fabulous tour! I highly recommend it. We had the greatest tour guide and bus driver. The itinerary was fascinating . You read about the itinerary before you go, but the reality of the itinerary far exceeded my expectation! We were blessed with great weather, too. We only had misty rain on two of the 10 days. I would probably change one of the hotels and one if the meals, but of those were fine. Others were just better! The excursions were great. I went on four out six of them. Did our own thing the last night in London. The Park Plaza Westminster Bridge was my favorite hotel and it was strategically located!

Britain and Ireland Experience (12 Days)

' Great Holiday ' We really enjoyed the many sites of the UK. It really was a great 'taste' of the UK. We appreciated our tour guide and his respectful, knowledgeable and professional manner. The coach was comfortable and 'hats off' to our driver for driving safely on some very tricky roads. We also appreciated our cases being delivered and picked up from our room daily. Hotels were better than we expected and breakfast and other meals always delicious! We had a fantastic trip.

It was like heritage walk of the Major medieval Cities of England Scotland and Ireland. Many of Its Castles Like Windsor ,Alnwick and Ross Castle of Killarney Ireland and Palaces Looked almost surrealistic and we felt as if we have taken back in Time to the medieval Ages. The Tour Guides were thorough professional even though they had to shuffle between English and spanish in their Narrative they did a wonderful job.

The Best of Britain & Ireland

Staff was excellent!! Susie our tour guide was outstanding! She had extensive knowledge of all the areas on the tour. Was very personable and organized. Our driver John was amazing. Maneuvering over tricky roads and tight places. He was very friendly and professional. The only down side to the trip were some of the hotels. Mercury Wetherby Hotel - very poor The running commentary at each hotel was ‘what won’t work here’? Not to mention that there is no AC. Overall I would recommend touring with Cosmos.

5 Day Skye & Highland Fling Tour

5 Day Skye & Highland Fling

Recently completed this tour and I cannot recommend this enough! Had a fantastic time and the tour guide, Nick, was hands down the best I have had in tours. It would we great if the company started doing a longer tour (7 - 10 Days) as 5 days in highlands was not nearly enough. Though overall, highly highly recommend!

Great Britain Tour

Great Britain

The tour was excellent, the tour guide was great. My only concern was some added activities had an added cost. But when we got on the tour, they could only be paid with cash, not a credit card etc. you could not get cash with a credit card unless the credit card had a PIN. US credit cards usually don’t have PINs. The tour had no way to have us pay for the extras if we did not have cash or a card with a PIN.

What people love about UK And Great Britain Tours

Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
The driver, Billy, and tour director, Speedy, made the trip very interesting and informative. They were both very helpful. We were disappointed that some of the hotel didn’t really cater for the older tourist with rooms a fair distance from reception, climbing stairs and dragging our luggage.
As the one year anniversary approaches, I wish I could do this trip again!

Lady’s Guide to a Day Trip to Deal

Today I want to share my guide to a day trip to Deal, Kent. This coastal town in England has everything from seaside castles to historic streets, and lots of smuggling lore to boot.

Day Trip to Deal

Day Trip to Deal

Located between Ramsgate and Dover on the southeast coast of England, under-the-radar Deal lies where the North Sea meets the English Channel.

The town often gets overlooked in favor of popular coastal destinations in Kent like Margate and Whitstable , but it’s worth a visit in its own right for its legendary history, beautiful streets, and seaside charm.

Street in Deal, England

How to Get to Deal

It’s easy to take a day trip to Deal from London and other parts of southern England. There are direct high-speed trains to Deal from the UK capital, and the journey takes less than an hour and a half.

There’s parking in Deal, too, so driving is an option if you prefer to take a day trip from London by car . The journey time from the capital is around two hours.

House in Deal, England

Things to Do on a Day Trip to Deal

Once in town, there are a lot of fun things to on a day trip to Deal. Whether you prefer castles or cafes, pastel houses or pebble beaches, Deal has something for everyone.

Pastel Houses in Deal, England

Deal Castle

One of the main attractions in town is Deal Castle. This hulking fortress is right on the beach and it’s a great place to start a day trip to Deal.

Established by Henry VIII, Deal Castle is one of seven forts built between 1539 and 1540 to defend ships in Kent and guard against enemy invaders from France and other parts of Europe.

Today the castle is an English Heritage property that’s open to visitors. I start my day trip to Deal by exploring the rooms, soaking up the sea views, and learning about the history of the fortress.

Deal Castle

Middle Street

Speaking of history, Middle Street is not only one of the prettiest streets in Deal, but also one of the most historic places in town. Seeing it is a must on a day trip to Deal.

Lined with colorful heritage houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, Middle Street and the narrow lanes that come off it were at the heart of Deal’s legendary smuggling trade.

Middle Street, Deal, England

Tobacco, tea, spirits, silk, lace, and other goods were smuggled in from the sea between the 17th and 19th centuries.

They passed from secret compartments in ships to the warren of streets and hiding places in local houses before being sold on the black market.

Middle Street, Deal, England

While smuggling may be a thing of Deal’s past, the houses and streets it took place in are preserved in time. Walking down Middle Street is a treat for the eyes, what with all the historic details and pastel facades.

Homes with names like Birdcage Cottage and Ole Malmsey add loads of charm to the area, and a heritage trail with signs giving information about Deal’s history in English and French bring the street’s past to life.

Middle Street, Deal, England

Deal Beach and Pier

But the town is on the seaside, and as beautiful as the inland area is, no day trip to Deal would be complete without a stint on the waterfront. This place is one of the best beach day trips from London , after all.

The Deal beach is a pebble one that slopes into the sea. It stretches from north to south and is punctuated by sights like Deal Pier. Built in the 1950s, the pier has a restaurant at the end and offers great views of the shoreline.

The beach is also a good place to spot colorful fishing boats, Deal Castle, and seafront restaurants and pubs.

I spend time taking it all in before walking south along the coastal path in Deal to get to neighboring Walmer. There are beautiful historic houses along The Beach, a seafront street that sits beside the trail.

Deal Pier

Deal Memorial Bandstand

On my way from Deal to Walmer I pass waterfront highlights like the Deal Memorial Bandstand.

It’s dedicated to the 11 musicians who were killed in 1989 when an IRA bomb exploded at the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal. Free concerts are held here in the warmer months.

Deal Memorial Bandstand

Walmer Castle

When I reach Walmer, I pop over to Walmer Castle, another of the seven forts built by Henry VIII between 1539 and 1540. It’s a great place to visit on a day trip to Deal.

Like Deal Castle, it’s an English Heritage site in Kent. But Walmer Castle is as different from its neighbor as can be.

While the former is a shell of a fortress on the beach, the latter is fully furnished inside and features lush gardens outside.

This is due to the fact that Walmer Castle was repurposed into a home for the Lords Warden of the Cinque Ports by the Duke of Dorset in 1727.

Since that time, Walmer Castle has been a residence of everyone from the Iron Duke of Wellington to the Queen Mum.

Each warden has left her or his mark on the home and grounds, from the Duke of Wellington’s deathbed to the Queen Mother’s garden.

I enjoy exploring the grounds, especially the sea of topiary hedges, kitchen garden flower beds, and reflecting pool. The castle itself is an impressive sight, too.

Walmer Castle, Kent, England

Where to Eat and Drink in Deal

Back in Deal, I check out the local food and drink scene. There are a lot of places to choose from here, and no day trip to Deal would be complete without a meal (or three).

At the start of my visit I pop into a cafe called Hog & Bean for a latte and a scone. The place has better ambiance than food, but it’s still nice to refuel inside.

When lunchtime rolls around, I grab fish and chips from one of the many restaurants along the waterfront and eat on the beach. It feels quintessentially English, not least because it’s raining.

In the late afternoon, I stop at The Ship Inn pub in Deal. This historic watering hole on Middle Street has a dark green wood bar and everything from a piano to a log burner inside.

The walls are covered in nautical memorabilia, and old revolvers and rowing oars catch my eye as I sit down for a drink.

The Ship Inn Pub, Deal, England

Shopping in Deal

In addition to food and drink, a day trip to Deal wouldn’t be complete without some retail therapy. There are great shops in Deal, and I seek out the best on the high street.

I love the home furnishings at Smoke on the Water, and there are fun clothes and accessories at Urban Chic. The Deal Bookshop is sweet, although purists might lament that it’s a Waterstones in disguise.

Dunlin & Diver has goods from small designers and makers to drool over. And don’t even get me started on how much I love the facade of Le Pinardier, a local wine bar and shop.

Beyond stores, there are art galleries like the alternative Don’t Walk Gallery in Deal. It features emerging and established talent in sculpture, illustration, photography, printmaking, and painting.

Across the street, I pop into The Village Indoor Market, a weekend special with stalls selling a variety of antiques, crafts, and fashion items.

There’s also a Saturday market in the Union Road car park with food, drinks, antiques, cards, crafts, clothes, and more.

Deal Bookshop

Museums in Deal

Another way to spend time on a day trip to Deal is to visit the town’s museums. There are lots of small ones here, including the Deal Timeball Tower. This seafront number has a unique Greenwich Mean Time signal on its roof.

Dating back to Victorian times, the time ball drops every day at 1pm and hourly from 9am to 5pm when the museum is open during the warmer months.

Not far from the time ball, the Deal Maritime and Local History Museum is another of the town’s highlights.

It showcases the evolution of Deal, Walmer, and the surrounding area in Kent with replica boats, nautical displays, and exhibitions. There’s even a boatyard.

Beyond museums, the historic Town Hall in Deal sits stately on the high street. There’s a Wednesday market here that offers prepared food and fresh produce each week.

There are blue plaques dedicated to Joseph Lister (of antiseptic fame) and other local heroes dotted around town, too.

Deal Timeball Tower, Kent, England

Sandown Castle

I know, I know. I’ve written a lot about castles in this blog post. But this town has more than its fair share of fortresses, and they’re all worth seeing on a day trip to Deal.

Sandown Castle is another of Henry VIII’s seven forts in the area. It’s as different from Deal Castle and Walmer Castle as they are from one another.

That’s primarily because Sandown Castle is in ruins. Way up at the north end of Deal, what remains of the castle can be seen in a garden by the beach.

It takes some imagination to envision what it looked like in its prime, but it’s still nice to walk along the waterfront and admire the garden it’s in.

Sandown Castle

The Rose Hotel

With so much to do in and around town, a day trip to Deal hardly feels like enough time. If I could do it over again, I would stay a night at The Rose hotel in Deal.

This stylish number on the high street is an eight-room boutique hotel in Deal. Housed in a former pub, it now boasts of a great restaurant, chic rooms, and stylish atmosphere. It’s perfect for a weekend getaway from London .

Rose Hotel, Deal

Deal Day Trip

But alas, my visit is a day trip to Deal. When evening comes, so does my train back to London.

As I speed along the coast and through the Kent countryside, I start to plan my next visit to Deal. I hope it will be soon, and if you’ve enjoyed this blog post, I hope you can visit in the near future, too.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to the United Kingdom

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest United Kingdom flight deals.
  • If you plan on visiting other international destinations from the United Kingdom, you should book a flight that lands at Heathrow Airport (LHR) as it is the main hub for international flights out of the UK.
  • If you want to land in the United Kingdom in a region where you can easily connect to other areas, Birmingham Airport (BHX) is a good option. The airport is roughly in the region's center and has good transport links to other places like London and Bristol, including by train and road.
  • When traveling on connecting flights, be sure to check the flight details to know whether the flight is a self-transfer or not. Self-transfer flights require you to check yourself in at each individual flight.
  • If you plan to visit Bath in the UK, your nearest arrival airport is Bristol Airport (BRS). Bristol Airport (BRS) is an international airport serving Bristol city and the region, and it’s nineteen miles away from Bath.
  • If you plan on touring the northern region of the United Kingdom, we recommend booking flights that land at Manchester Airport (MAN). However, if most of your itinerary is set to be in the southern region, Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London is where you’ll want to land.
  • Suppose you are in China and want to fly to the United Kingdom, be informed that there are direct flights between the two countries. Several airlines, like Air China and Hainan Airlines, operate on this route.
  • Anyone traveling with kids under the age of seven should know that they are required by law to be in well-fitted car seats whenever you’re on the road. Therefore, be sure to carry one with you. Alternatively, you can ask for one when you rent a car from the airport.
  • On the date you’re scheduled to fly to the United Kingdom from the US, you should get to the airport at least an hour prior to the time your flight is supposed to take off.

Top 5 airlines flying to the United Kingdom

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

They did a fine job. Can't wait to use Delta in the future.

There was a loud squeaky sound the whole time we were flying.

Had a broken tray in business class. Crew just shrugged it off.

Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.

Everything was great except for the seat. The backrest would not stay in the upright position.

I usually have a positive experience with Delta. Complimentary upgrades are always nice!

Flight delayed about 2 hrs so it made it a VERY late night

The crew, food, and entertainment were all good. But my screen had some sort of bug where if I turned it off, it would turn back on after 2-5 minutes. At full brightness. It made it very hard to get any shut-eye on the overnight flight. Also, the older Boeing plane, while nicely cared for (and no doors fell off 😅👏) doesn't have the nice air quality of newer planes. So I felt a bit greasy by the time we landed in Sweden.

Cabin crew on our flight showed lack of any customer service gruff and acting annoyed if you asked anything and I mean anything Example a man on the seat over dropped his beer on my husbands blanket We asked if we could switch out blankets cabin crew Said. No we don’t have any extras OK well can you take the wet one Cabin crew looked disgusted and annoyed Took it no OK or yes just a growl

Quick flight. But cabin crew were very noisy and talking too much, especially when we were seated at the back of the plane trying to sleep through the night .

My ticket was for Premium Economy and all the seats were taken, I was placed in Economy class and I’m looking for a refund.

Unfortunately delayed 2 hrs due to faulty tyre.. which had to be changed, but better safe than sorry.

The delay was an issue. Other than that. Every thing good

Hi vergin Atlantic service was good but the flight ticket agent travel up charge me extra 57 pounds as a airport charges, actually I refuse to pay but they say if I not pay £57 then they say you will not be able to travel from Heathrow to goa ,so for me there was no option and it was just 3 day before my departure so i paid, so please look in to the matter. And I have a receipt of £ 57 as well .thanks

Staff didn’t check cabin well for landing seemed more interested in chatting to each other. Food was poor and differed from pre order.

We were in the last group to be called to the flight - which was 30 minutes late taking off. While we were lucky enough to have been given bulkhead seats (due to a medical condition I’d told them about beforehand) the seats weren’t particularly comfortable. A crying baby for the whole trip made things worse, so the crew managed very well with coping. The final thing I’d say was that there wasn’t enough food served during the flight.

Very good. Glad we had Premium for the flight out.

We flew Upper Class from London to The Turks and Caicos. Check in was amazing. Our ldriver too us directly to a special entrance to terminal 3. It took 10 minutes to check in and clear customs. Amazing! The VA lounge is large and comfortable. Boarding the flight was easy and without a wait. The crew was excellent. But the seats were awful, strange and uncomfortable. Having a comfortable flat bed seat is the reason we pays 1000s extra. The VA 787 uses a reverse herringbone configuration. Look it up. You have your back to the window and are facing the aisle with no privacy. Turning the seat into a bed requires assistance from the crew so not very spontaneous. . The food was ok. A bit tasteless and meager portions. Had to pay for WiFi. I believe VA has other configuration on their dream airbus flights. Lots of stuff about all this on YouTube where you can see what I have been describing. I can not recommend taking VA on a long flight with these seats.

Flight delayed from Cape Town to Washington then got diverted to miami and in miami we had to fend for ourselves , im still trying to get to Shreveport now

delay several times and wait extra long to board. no entertainment service because there are problem for some rows. always encounter some delays for the last flight of the day.

I just wrote a text which was supposed to be for the flight from Denver to spokane not Frankfurt to Denver.

On time every leg of the journey and exceptional staff at counter, gate, and on board. I haven’t travelled in US for a long time and was genuinely surprised how pleasant this was.

Hated every minute of it. This flight should have only taken 1.5hrs but was delayed over 10hours. Now I am being told I cannot be compensated or refunded my ticket price or extra leg room, which I purchased but did not receive, because the airline is throwing the blame on the 3rd party I purchased tickets through and 3rd party putting the blame on airline. No one wants to help. They received their money and that's all they care about. Im going on 3 days of still trying to get to my final destination, had to cancel car rental, car insurance and hotel. Currently staying in airport until hotels open up. Thank you Lufthansa, Kayak, Underpricer and United for making this trip the worst ever.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

the flight from Tampa departed with a delay. The food on board was poor, usually on international airlines alcoholic beverages are offered free of charge , but here it was for a fee, the cutlery was wooden, there were no hot drinks (tea, coffee). Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of the portions of food, but it wouldn't have been enough for a child either. And in the future, I will try not to use the services of this airline

they made me check my carryon. There was space in the overhead bins.

The return trip was a customer service disaster. American Airlines needs an overhaul of how they treat their customers.

Was flying in premium eco and there were around 5-6 movies I wanted to watch and none of those could I play for some reasons. Not just me we checked w the person sitting next to me. Few of the movies were only playable :( Also that was not great that we couldn't upgrade to business however tried to, many times before the flight :(

You cancelled my flight by email then made it very difficult to get in contact with you. Then put me in a flight with a long layover in Mexico returning to the wrong airport in uk. Mind blowing my stressful. I missed see my grand dad because of you.

This was not the BA business class it used to be. Mediocre food, attendants seemed stretched thin. All the little luxuries that used to make BA business fun were missing. Flight delayed and the explanation given was they forgot to pick up crew - I hope I misheard! Transfer in LHR “sticky” - we thought we had way too much time at 3hours but it was needed. Next time will try different route.

Always getting updates by email very easy to check in on line. There was plenty of checking in staff to get you all through. It was nice that the flight attendants took time to talk to you and were interested in your holiday.

Flight from Phoenix to London was very quiet. Excellent space available for comfort, couldn't fault

Food was very average. And top up drinks offer was absent. For a 11 hour long flight that should be the minimum. The crew didn't want to be there. I understand it was new year day but given they had signed up for it

It was my fault choosing the seat nearest the entrance but it was ok.

It was good, the staff was friendly and it was a typical flight to Europe.

My flight was a little marred by poorly fuctioning / loose headphone sockets meaning I had to move twice. The meals were good and the staff are always amazing, attentive and friendly. My bag was lost on my previos trip with BA for 15 days of my 18 day trip, however I experienced no such issues this time despite my fears. Overall ok but aircraft need better looking after.

Starting with the flight Cairo to London the plain was so poor no entertainment at all uncomfortable seats although it’s 5 hours long, then an American airline plain took me from London to Miami it was a bad experience the crew most of flight time not available and they asked us to help our selves for any snacks if we need. From Miami to London actually was perfect flight with a huge plain and perfect crew but from London to Cairo was horrible plain with stiff fixed seats not movable no entertainment or wi fi very poor Menu which is unacceptable for a business class

I've done hundreds of flights in my life, and this flight was one of the best I've ever taken, From beginning to end, everything went smoothly, professionally, and with a smile and friendly attitude from all employees I interacted with. The food was delicious (and free), as were the drinks. There was just a genial and effective way in the way that British Airways organized the flight -that reminded of days in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, when flying was a fun, and exciting adventure. I enjoyed and had confidence in the abilities of the flight crew, I'll be flying British Airways several more times this summer. Thank you so much for the great experience! Cheryl Olso

Terrible! I missed my flight to my final destination and British airlines and American Airlines keep pointing fingers on each other’s. Nobody wants to take responsibility

Overall, terrific service, accommodations, and experience. Only reason comfort was rated lower was because it was difficult to keep a comfortable sleeping position for the overnight flight, but I also had an economy seat.

Very cramped seats in economy, difficult to get comfortable with your legs and feet and back. The seat width is ok but I’m average size. Food is HORRIBLE. Crew is friendly. Delays and very tight connections made it tough for navigating. We would have missed our connecting flight if it wasn’t delayed too. The terminal transit was slow and normally every 10 minutes before 8pm, after 8 pm is every 30 minutes!!!!! No free wine or drinks!! Below average attitude.

Leg room was better than expected. Lavatory’s were easy to access.crew was grea!

Horrible seat allocation. Boarding was slow. Food was average and so was entertainment. The TV terminal didn't work and so had to use remote.

Lost one checked bag.and wasted 30min waiting and filing missing baggage report. Very unsatisfied.

This was an American Airlines flight. The crew were very unhappy and quite grumpy. Abrupt to the point of being rude. The food was dreadful. Indeed the breakfast was in edible. I will avoid AA at all costs in the future.

As expected for a BA long haul flight in economy - you get what you pay for. Good leg space, in flight entertainment and food and drink provided. Staff on the return flight (overnight) we're a bit brisk and just wanted to get everyone fed and watered before turning the lights down. We're vegetarian so ordered it separately through the booking, although when we were in flight we realised there was a normal and vegetarian option anyway, and we were given vegan. This is fine, however on the return trip we were told there were no more specially ordered meals left, so be aware in case you have specific dietary requirements.

We know finding budget-friendly deals isn't always easy, so we've rounded up our pick of this week's best discounted deals.

We've rounded up our pick of this week's best discounted staycation deals

UK holidays are much easier to organise, as you won't have to worry about catching flights, packing light, or waiting in long airport queues.

The best deals we've spotted this week come from some of Brits' favourite providers like Haven, Parkdean Resorts, Park Holidays and Shorefield Holidays.

However, since most of these offers are only available for a short period of time, the prices may increase again soon.

Although you'll have to be quick to book them, most of the discounted stays we've found have departures in June and July.
