Florida Georgia Line Cruise Lyrics

Baby you a song You make me wanna roll my windows down and cruise

Yeah, when I first saw that bikini top on her She’s poppin’ right out of the South Georgia water Thought, “Oh, good lord, she had them long tanned legs!” Couldn’t help myself so I walked up and said

Baby you a song You make me wanna roll my windows down and cruise Down a back road blowin’ stop signs through the middle Every little farm town with you In this brand new Chevy with a lift kit Would look a hell of a lot better with you up in it So baby you a song You make me wanna roll my windows down and cruise

She was sippin’ on Southern and singin’ Marshall Tucker We were falling in love in the sweet heart of summer She hopped right up into the cab of my truck and said, “Fire it up, let’s go get this thing stuck.”

When that summer sun fell to its knees I looked at her and she looked at me And I turned on those KC lights and drove all night ‘Cause it felt so right, her and I, man we felt so right

I put it in park and Grabbed my guitar And strummed a couple chords And sang from the heart Girl you sure got the beat in my chest bumpin’ Hell, I can’t get you out of my head

Baby you a song You make me wanna roll my windows down and cruise Down a back road blowin’ stop signs through the middle Every little farm town with you

Baby you a song You make me wanna roll my windows down and cruise Down a back road blowin’ stop signs through the middle Every little farm town with you In this brand new Chevy with a lift kit Would look a hell of a lot better with you up in it Come on

Come on, girl Get those windows down and cruise Aww, yeah.

Taste of Country

Florida Georgia Line, ‘Cruise’ – Lyrics Uncovered

Country music fans have been eating up the debut single from Florida Georgia Line , 'Cruise,' thanks to its catchy lyrics and infectious melody. It doesn't hurt that the duo's Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard are single and good looking, either.

"'Cruise' came out of another writing session in the middle of another song," Kelley tells Taste of Country of the day they wrote the song with their producer, Joey Moi, as well as Chase Rice and Jesse Rice. "I think we kind of have to thank the songwriting gods for that one."

"The first line of the chorus just kind of popped out of nowhere, really," adds Hubbard.

" Baby, you a song / You make me wanna roll my windows down and cruise / Down a back road blowin’ stop signs through the middle / Every little farm town with you / In this brand new Chevy with a lift kit / It’d look a hell of a lot better with you up in it / So baby you a song / You make me wanna roll my windows down and cruise ," Florida Georgia Line wrote in the 'Cruise' chorus lyrics.

"We love back-roading and rolling down our windows and listening to music," Kelley admits with a grin. "I don’t think there’s anything better than that."

" She was sippin’ on Southern and singin’ Marshall Tucker / We were falling in love in the sweet heart of summer / She hopped right up into the cab of my truck and said / 'Fire it up, let’s go get this thing stuck ,'" the song continues.

"We knew there was something cool about it," notes Kelley. "I remember we just kind of tweaked it a little bit. Joey did an awesome job on the track, and it sounds huge. We’re really proud of it. It’s just a fun, summer song"

Adds Hubbard, "Hopefully our fans will feel the same. The feedback has been amazing so far. It’s been really good -- nothing but positive! Almost surprisingly overwhelming."

SongfactsÂź:

  • Georgia born and raised Tyler Hubbard and Florida native Brian Kelley both began playing guitar individually while they were in high school before meeting at Nashville's Belmont University. They began writing songs together between classes and soon found themselves playing local clubs, quickly building a fanbase. Hubbard and Kelley signed a publishing/production/management deal with Craig Wiseman's Big Loud Mountain record label in December 2011 and released their first five-song EP, It'z Just What We Do the following May. This breezy summer song is their first single from the collection.
  • The song's success was predicted by Brian Kelley as soon as the pair started laying it down. "I remember first day in the studio when we were recording 'Cruise' and it was starting to come to life," said Tyler as the song climbed the Hot 100. "BK looked at me and he said, 'Dude, we're gonna sell a million copies of this song.' And I'm like, 'Dude, there's no way. It's not even possible.' And you know, that was a year ago when we were starting to work on it."
  • When this tale of youthful attraction, music and Georgia back roads topped Billboard's Country Airplay chart, Florida Georgia Line became the first duo or group to reach #1 on the chart with a debut single since Zac Brown Band's " Chicken Fried " in December 2008.
  • The song left the Hot 100 in February 2013, after peaking at #16. However, after a pop crossover remix with rapper Nelly was released a couple of months later, the song reappeared on the chart this time in the Top 10.
  • This song found a home on pop radio playlists alongside far more kinetic fare by the likes of Icona Pop, Robin Thicke, and Maroon 5. Part of its appeal is its unabashedly Southern sentiments, as we hear about a beautiful girl who enjoys both The Marshall Tucker Band (" Can't You See ," " Heard It In A Love Song ") and Southern Comfort cocktails. Unlike most hits of the time, the song forgoes an intro and starts right in with the chorus, which is repeated three more times in the song. In the last verse, most of the musical backing is dropped, which adds provides a nice break near the end of the song and adds impact to that fourth chorus.
  • Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line explained to Radio.com how the collaboration with Nelly came together. "We had some pop stations that were wanting a different version of 'Cruise' that we could send out, and he [Nelly] is a labelmate," he said. "We heard he was a fan of what we were doing and the song. We knew he wanted to do it, and literally a day or two later we had the track and we cranked it up on the bus." He added that the pair were blown away by Nelly's version. "I literally think that whole weekend we probably listened to it a couple hundred times," he admitted. "We're huge fans of him. I don't think we could have picked anybody better. It fits what we're doing, it fits what he's doing. He's a country boy at heart. We're thankful that he put his amazing talent on our song." This wasn't the first time that Nelly had dipped his toe into the Nashville sound. In 2004 he recorded a country-rap hybrid, " Over and Over ," with Tim McGraw, which peaked at #3 on the Hot 100.
  • The song set the all-time record for the most weeks at #1 on the Hot Country Songs chart (over three different runs). It overtook three other titles that each led for 21 weeks - Eddy Arnold's "I'll Hold You in My Heart (1947-48), Hank Snow's "I'm Moving On" (1950-51) and Webb Pierce's "In the Jailhouse Now" (1955). The song finally abdicated the #1 crown after a run of 24 cumulative weeks, the last 19 occurring over consecutive frames. The record was eclipsed by Sam Hunt's smash single " Body Like a Back Road ," which spent its unprecedented 25th consecutive week atop the country chart on the tally dated August 12, 2017.
  • The song climbed into the Hot 100's top five in its 34th week on the chart, setting a record for the slowest ascent to the region in the chart's history. It eclipsed the 30-week ascent to the top five of Lonestar's " Amazed " in 1999-2000. Imagine Dragons bested Florida Georgia Line's longevity record just three weeks later when " Radioactive " climbed into the Hot 100's top five for the first time in its 42nd week on the chart.
  • This was the first song that Florida Georgia Line wrote with producer Joey Moi (Nickelback, Jake Owen ). The trio built on a tune that Hubbard and Kelley had already started with brothers Chase and Jesse Rice. "It was one of those days where everything was firing perfectly," Moi told Billboard magazine. "No one got hung up or was banging their head on the wall trying to find a word that rhymes with 'car.'"
  • This won Single Of The Year at the 2013 CMA Awards. Florida Georgia Line also won Vocal Duo Of The Year at the same ceremony.
  • The remixed version of the song took Single of the Year at the 2013 American Music Awards. "I've got to thank my boy Nelly," said Tyler Hubbard. "Thank you for making this song epic for us. It's a huge honor."
  • NielsenSoundscan announced in early January 2014 that the song had overtaken Lady Antebellum's " Need You Now " to become the #1 best-selling digital Country single of all time.
  • The story of the song started one afternoon in Jesse Rice's living room when he, Kelley and Chase Rice were in the middle of a writing session. They had been penning another song when Kelley started playing something very different. "All of a sudden Brian [Kelley] pops up and strums a chord and starts humming this melody," Chase Rice told Radio.com. "That ended up being the 'Cruise' melody, and we looked at each other, all of us three, and we were like, 'What the hell is that?' He was like, 'I don't know, but we should write it.' As we got more into it, we completely dropped the other song we were writing that day, and I'm glad we did." Kelley continued the story. "The first line of the chorus got thrown out," he recalled. "We wrote it really quick, got it back in the studio, tweaked some things and added some things. Our producer Joey Moi really challenged us to tighten it up and to try and make it the best song we could. He made an amazing track to go along with that. It doesn't sound like anything else that's on the radio."
  • Bro-country is a term used in country music that refers to Nashville songs about young guys partying, drinking, admiring barely clad women and driving pickup trucks. The first use of 'bro-country' was by Jody Rosen of New York magazine in a August 11, 2013 article talking about this tune. "In short, 'Cruise' is bro-country: music by and of the tatted, gym-toned, party-hearty young American White dude," Rosen wrote. "It's a movement that has been gathering steam for several years now, and we may look back on 'Cruise' as a turning point, the moment when the balance of power tipped from an older generation of male country stars to the bros."
  • Producer Joey Moi used the hair metal band Def Leppard as a sonic template for the tune. "I came from a world where we spend days in the studio, trying to make a song better," he told Billboard magazine. "In my brain, the template is Def Leppard. Everything with them was a monster hook and a giant chorus."
  • This song came at a time when music-themed cruises were becoming popular, and accordingly, the duo set sail on the "This is How We Cruise" cruise on November 8, 2014. The four-day trip aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line vessel Norwegian Pearl featured two live performances by the duo, which each guest getting a photo with the guys. The cruise was so popular they did it again the next year.
  • Florida Georgia Line were a little-known duo when they recorded this song. Co-writer Chase Rice admitted to Taste of Country in a 2019 interview that he wasn't initially sold on Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley cutting "Cruise." "I wanted Luke Bryan or somebody big to cut it," he said. "And luckily they took it and made it what it was. Because at that time, nobody knew who they were. They know now."
  • "Cruise" was the first-ever country single to earn Diamond certification (10 million units sold) from the RIAA.

  • Camille from Toronto, Oh Every once in awhile, song lyrics come along that make you wonder why they hadn't already been written before. This is one of those songs. They just make perfect sense. Nelly's video of this is hot; I've never listened to his music before but love the mix of the Florida Georgia Line boys with Nelly. This one will always remind you of 2013/summer.

North Korea launches "Friendly Father" song and music video praising Kim Jong Un

By Elizabeth Palmer

April 19, 2024 / 12:15 PM EDT / CBS News

Tokyo — In North Korea, the release of Taylor Swift's new double album was completely eclipsed by the surprise drop of another brand-new song, complete with an elaborately produced music video. There were no tortured poets in sight for the release of "Friendly Father," an energetic pop-style piece of state propaganda praising North Korea 's dictatorial leader Kim Jong Un.

The accompanying music video , dropped on the North Korean public by its state-controlled media this week, features dozens of seemingly ecstatic residents of all ages belting out catchy lines such as: "May this night never end, dear beautiful night of Pyongyang. The people believe and follow him with one heart! Let's boast of Kim Jong Un, a friendly father!"

The tune has all the subtlety of a beerhall polka — and the makings of a propaganda classic.

kim-jong-un-friendly-father-song.jpg

"Friendly Father" was also performed live at a lavish event, clips of which were aired by North Korean state TV, to mark the opening of a new apartment complex said to contain 10,000 homes in the capital, Pyongyang.

  • Why is Kim Jong Un's daughter suddenly front and center?

Kim, as portly as ever and wearing a black leather jacket, was pictured arriving at the ceremony in an armored limousine believed to have been gifted to him by Russian President Vladimir Putin .

The video, featuring cheering soldiers, beaming children, amped-up pop singers and an ecstatic marching band, was professionally shot and edited. Analysts say it's part of a push to recreate and reenergize the leadership cult around Kim, whose family has ruled over North Korea since the country's founding in 1948.

The happy utopia it depicts, however, is a cruel lie, and it likely won't fool many people inside or outside the Hermit Kingdom.

Inside North Korea

Not far beyond the cheering crowds and shiny new buildings, more than 25 million North Koreans live in crumbling housing with restricted access to health care and modern amenities, and no freedom of movement or expression.

North Korea remains one of the poorest countries on earth. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization said almost half of its population was undernourished as recently as 2022.

More recent statistics aren't available, as Kim sealed his country's borders completely during the pandemic.

Since then, the Kim regime has spent vast amounts of money on fencing and guard posts along North Korea's border with China, to stop its people from escaping. While his country's sanctions-battered economy languishes, the "Friendly Father" has also lavished fortunes on developing and test-firing ballistic missiles designed to carry nuclear warheads.

kim-jong-un-friendly-father-song2.jpg

Kim may come off in the video as a good sport with a bad haircut, but if — as the song says — people follow him, it's because they have no choice. He will stop at nothing to stay in power.

Video of a Colorado Rockies coach sitting in cockpit during team flight prompts FAA probe

Officials are investigating a video that showed a Colorado Rockies coach sitting in the cockpit during a team flight— a major security violation.

The incident unfolded on a charter flight operated by United Airlines on April 10 from Denver to Toronto, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Team hitting coach Hensley Meulens posted the clip on his Instagram, which was later deleted after it circulated online.

In the clip, Meulens is seen sitting behind the controls in the captain’s seat in the cockpit.

He gives the camera a thumbs up and the person filming pans to a uniformed United flight officer in the co-pilot seat. He said, “I’m going to land the plane tonight,” as he points to some of the flight controls and mimics the pushing the plane’s yoke.

The FAA said it was investigating the incident, noting that federal regulations restrict access to the flight deck to specific individuals.

United said it was “deeply disturbed by what we see in that video, which appears to show an unauthorized person in the flight deck at cruise altitude while the autopilot was engaged.”

“As a clear violation of our safety and operational policies, we’ve reported the incident to the FAA and have withheld the pilots from service while we conduct an investigation” the airline said.

NBC News has reached out other the Colorado Rockies and Meulens for comment, but did not immediately hear back Friday.

Why vector databases are having a moment as the AI hype cycle peaks

Vector databases are all the rage, judging by the number of startups entering the space and the investors ponying up for a piece of the pie. The proliferation of large language models (LLMs) and the generative AI (GenAI) movement have created fertile ground for vector database technologies to flourish. While traditional relational databases such as Postgres or MySQL are well-suited to structured data -- predefined data types that can be filed neatly in rows and columns -- this doesn't work so well for unstructured data such as images, videos, emails, social media posts, and any data that doesn't adhere to a predefined data model.

Lawmakers vote to reauthorize US spying law that critics say expands government surveillance

Lawmakers passed legislation early Saturday reauthorizing and expanding a controversial U.S. surveillance law shortly after the powers expired at midnight, rejecting opposition by privacy advocates and lawmakers. The bill, which passed on a 60-34 vote, reauthorizes powers known as Section 702 under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which allows the government to collect the communications of foreign individuals by accessing records from tech and phone providers. Critics, including lawmakers who voted against the reauthorization, say FISA also sweeps up the communications of Americans while spying on its foreign targets.

Taylor Swift slammed for 'offensive' lyrics on Tortured Poets Department

Some fans didn't agree with Taylor Swift's lyrics on her latest track I Hate It Here in her 11th studio album released on Friday, The Tortured Poets Department

Taylor Swift faces backlash over 'offensive' lyrics on The Tortured Poets Department.

The Blank Space songstress dropped her 11th studio album on Friday, announcing a secret second instalment moments after its release. But it's some of the singer's words on her track I Hate It Here that has caused controversy amongst her audience.

She sings about wanting to live in another erea, with the Grammy-winning artist admitting she'd like to live in the 1830s. "My friends used to play a game where / We would pick a decade / We wished we could live in instead of this / I'd say the 1830s but without all the racists / And getting married off for the highest bid," Taylor sings.

Some have taken to X, formally Twitter , with frustration, highlighting the fact that slavery was still legal in America in the 1830s. One fumed: "Pretty astonishing to stipulate that she wants to live in the 1830s, 'except without the racists,' and not mention slavery, so slavery still exists but everyone’s chill about it."

Another said: "I know I can’t stfu abt Taylor Swift but of all time periods WHY THE 1830s??? The most notable event from the time period is the trail of tears like I cannot wrap my head around it?" They added: "Is this another one of her dumbass codes?"

"There is no way Taylor Swift said she'd like to live in an era where Chattel Slavery was the law of the land and say 'but without the racists.' Like it was some casual microaggressions or something. Is this what we're doing," another user asked.

The Mirror has contacted Taylor's representatives for comment.

It's not the singer's only issue with TTPD, she has also been hit with a massive lyric typo error in her booklets for the Black Dog album. Before it dropped, Taylor revealed four different variants relating to the different stages of grief. The Manuscript, The Black Dog, The Bolter, and The Albatross. And with each variant, accompanying CDs and vinyl records were made available.

And now that the album is out, fans have started receiving their orders, with eagle-eyed Swifties spotting a major blunder in one of the lyric booklets. Taking to X, fans have highlighted how The Black Dog contains an awkward typo in the lyrics of the song of the same name.

Sharing snaps on the social platform, one fan penned: "Typo in The Black Dog lyric booklet," while another made a Swiftie inside joke when they penned: "Who let the woodvale intern back into the building?" And a third said: "Six weeks? Sorry I only know 'siz'. There’s a spelling error in the black dog booklet."

The actual lyrics are meant to read: "Six weeks of breathin' clean air / I still miss the smoke / Were you makin' fun of me / With some esoteric joke?" But instead of the "six" at the start of the bridge, inside The Black Dog variant lyric booklet, it says "siz".

Taylor Swift fans looking at resale tickets for the upcoming Eras Tour in the UK can purchase them from from a number of online retailers right now. Although the below sellers, including viagogo and Vivid Seats , are not "official" retailers, they do have a number of strict terms and conditions in place to keep ticket buyers and ticket sellers safe.

What is Taylor Swift's 'Florida!!!' song about? Here's what Swift said about the Sunshine State

According to Taylor Swift, “Florida!!!” is “one hell of a drug.”

Swift released her highly anticipated album "The Tortured Poets Department" at midnight on Friday, April 19, with some extra special nods to the Sunshine State.

"Welcome to New York," from Taylor's "1989" album might have a run for its money with her new Florida-centric song. The former may be the anthem blasting in the mind of every 20-something girl that moves to New York City, but "Florida!!!" has the makings of a new unofficial Sunshine State anthem.

And fans are theorizing that the song could be about Swift and Joe Alwyn's breakup, which happened while she was touring in Florida on the first leg of her record-breaking "Eras Tour" in 2023.

What do we know about 'The Tortured Poets Department?'

As USA Today's Taylor Swift reporter Bryan West says, the track titles are brutal .

Swift announced the album at the Grammys, when she won her 13th career Grammy for pop album of the year. Post Malone and Florence and The Machine are both featured on the album.

Fans speculated the album is mostly about Swift’s six-year relationship with English actor Joe Alwyn and their breakup. Both stars kept the relationship out of the public eye, but this album gives fans more leverage to guess at what happened between the two.

But there's also songs that are seemingly aimed at other figures in Swift's life, good and bad. From giddy love songs to boyfriend Travis Kelce, to relatable anthems about awful "situationships" aimed at Matty Healy . Even a few songs that seem to throw shade at her long-time adversary Kim Kardashian.

Here's the entire tracklist:

  • "Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department"
  • "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys"
  • "So Long, London"
  • "But Daddy I Love Him"
  • "Fresh Out the Slammer"
  • "Florida!!!" (feat. Florence + The Machine)
  • "Guilty as Sin?"
  • "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?"
  • "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)"
  • "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart"
  • "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived"
  • "The Alchemy"
  • "Clara Bow"

Here are the 15 bonus tracks:

  • "The Black Dog"
  • "imgonnagetyouback"
  • "The Albatross"
  • "Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus"
  • "How Did It End?"
  • "So High School"
  • "I Hate It Here"
  • "thanK you aIMee"
  • "I Look in People’s Windows"
  • "The Prophecy"
  • "Cassandra"
  • "The Bolter"
  • "The Manuscript"

Who is 'Florence and the Machine' featuring on 'Florida!!!' track?

Florence Welch is the powerhouse lead vocalist for the English indie rock band "Florence + the Machine." Welch is known for several hits over the past decade, such as 2009's "Dog Days are Over," 2011's "Shake it Out" and 2015's "Sweet Nothings" collaboration with Calvin Harris.

"Florida!!!" is the first time Swift and Welch have collaborated on a song together.

What is Taylor Swift's 'Florida!!!' about?

“Florida!!!” is a pretty grungy, dark song about trying to separate yourself from a bad or painful situation and going to Florida to forget about it. You be the judge of if it’s reflective of the Sunshine State or not.

Swift told iHeart Radio that after getting inspiration from crime shows, she thought of where she'd go if she needed to reinvent herself.

"I think I was coming up with this idea of 'what happens when your life doesn't fit' or 'the choices you've made catch up with you' and you're surrounded by these harsh consequences and judgement," Swift said. "And circumstances did not lead you to where you thought you'd be."

The opening line is “You can beat the heat, if you beat the charges, too. They said I was a cheat, I guess it must be true.”

Building up to the chorus, Swift sings a line that no-doubt has Florida’s tourism industry cooking up ideas:

“Little did you know your home’s really only a town you’re just a guest in. So you work your life away just to pay for a timeshare down in Destin .”

If all of your Swiftie friends are googling "Destin, Florida" and "Timeshares in Destin," now you know why.

In the chorus, Swift and Florence Welch, who is featured on the song, both sing "Florida! Is one hell of a drug. Florida! Can I use you up?"

One of the most instantly iconic lines from the song comes after the chorus, when Taylor sings "I need to forget, so take me to Florida."

Which other song did Taylor Swift mention Florida in?

"Florida!!!" isn't the only song where the state got a shoutout. In the first song on the album, titled "Fortnight," both Swift and Post Malone sing:

"'Nother fortnight lost in America. Move to Florida, buy the car you want . But it won't start up 'til you touch, touch, touch me. Thought of calling ya, but you won't pick up"

Where can I buy 'The Tortured Poets Department?'

You can purchase it  on her website . There are several versions of the album available, including a CD, cassette, vinyl and digital album.

These retailers will sell the album:

Politics | uncle luke for congress luther campbell, rapper turned civic activist, preparing to challenge congresswoman.

Luther Campbell, also known as Uncle Luke, talks during an interview at his home on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, in Miramar. He may run for Congress in South Florida in 2024. (Matias J. Ocner/Miami Herald)

Luther Campbell, the civic and political activist who jolted the establishment status quo decades ago with his raunchy lyrics, has a new way to shake things up: challenging a sitting Florida congresswoman in a Democratic primary.

Publicly, Campbell hasn’t decided. But he’s been teasing a candidacy — sometimes in unorthodox ways even by current-day routines of celebrity politicians — in a way that makes it sound as if he’s going to run.

“I’m still on this fact-finding mission to figure out whether or not I’m gonna run for Congress,” Campbell said in a social media video posted on April 9, adding, “It’s gonna be very hard for me not to run. Let’s put it that way.”

In a subsequent interview with WFOR-Ch. 4, he edged closer. “I’m really leaning towards running. I’m really leaning because,” he said, there’s “nothing telling me that I shouldn’t do it.”

A decision has to come quickly. Even though the primary isn’t until August, Florida congressional candidates face a Friday, April 26, deadline to qualify to get on the ballot. In one of his many social media posts about running, Campbell promised a decision two days before the deadline.

Campbell, better known to many as Luke Skyywalker and later Uncle Luke from his career as a rap artist, would be challenging U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick , who is in her third year representing a Broward-Palm Beach county district.

He’s also known for his civic activism and coaching youth sports in Miami-Dade County, where he successfully ran for county mayor in 2011. Records show he’s a longtime registered voter in Miramar.

A Campbell candidacy would instantly make the primary contest one of South Florida’s highest profile, attention grabbing and unorthodox campaigns of 2024.

Unconventional path

Campbell exploded in the public consciousness as the leader of the rap group 2 Live Crew.

A federal judge in South Florida declared the lyrics of its platinum-selling album “Nasty As They Wanna Be” were obscene, a ruling eventually overturned by an appeals court.

In meantime, then-Broward Sheriff Nick Navarro had Campbell and other members of 2 Live Crew arrested in 1990 on obscenity charges after they performed at a club in Hollywood. The jury found them not guilty .

One response was another song, “F—  Martinez,” about then-Gov. Bob Martinez, who considered the album obscene and wanted legal action against the group. The lyrics also took aim at the sheriff with the line, “F— Navarro. F— F— Navarro.”

In recent years he’s been a civic and political activist, a columnist, and has promoted and coached sports programs for inner city youth.

In 2011, he ran for mayor of Miami-Dade County, finishing in fourth place with 11% of the vote.

He remains unconventional as a candidate.

In a social media post on Friday he wrote that “politicians are nothing but a bunch of bums.” He also included an obscene adjective to describe what kind of bums he was talking about. In a recent podcast interview, he wondered about Cherfilus-McCormick “what the
has this lady done.” He used the same four-letter word used for Martinez and Navarro.

Also on Friday, his social media promoted “Freaknik 4/20,” an event he’s hosting Saturday night at a gentlemen’s club in Jacksonville that features “over 20 of the cities finest ladies.”

In an interview on the WFOR-Ch. 4 “Facing South Florida with Jim DeFede” program, Campbell said the needs of people who live in the 20th Congressional District aren’t being addressed. “Either you’re gonna sit on the sideline or you’re gonna get in the game and try to make some change,” he said.

He cited homelessness and water issues in Riviera Beach, people in the Belle Glade in western Palm Beach County have been hurt “where the machines have taken over the jobs and no longer the people are cutting the sugar cane.”

And, he said, “some parts of Broward County (look) like a third-world country.” He later specified schools, including a high school in Lauderdale Lakes: “You go up in Broward and you go to some of these schools like Boyd Anderson and you look at, as soon as you pull in the parking lot it looks like a third-world country.”

Campbell said Black leaders currently in power aren’t able to adequately push back. “The majority of African American congressmen and women, I mean they’re old. They’re tired, they ain’t got no more fight in them. They need somebody to go up there and fight for them,” he said on WFOR before adding criticism of all politicians.

Campbell is 63. Cherfilus-McCormick is 45.

“Politicians lie. They lie all the time. They lie to the people,” he told WFOR.

He was especially critical of the Republican Party, and said it’s been on a negative trajectory from the tea party era in 2010 through today. “You see the party, the Republican Party in the direction that they’re going, they’re really bullying African Americans, African Americans get bullied on every level of politics.”

And, Campbell said, he wasn’t worried that serving in Congress would make it a circus. “It’s a circus already,” he told WFOR.

No additional comment

His potential candidacy was first reported by the political news site The Bulwark . He’s discussed his potential candidacy in multiple social media posts and videos and as a podcast guest.

He told the TV station he was declining all other interview requests. Campbell didn’t respond to multiple email, text and voicemail requests for comment left with multiple representatives.

Earlier this year, Campbell registered a political action committee called Don’t Stop Get It Get It with the Federal Election Commission. Earlier this month a super PAC with the same name registered with the FEC.

Serious candidacy?

The Bulwark reported that Campbell was being trailed by a documentary film crew, but he told WFOR he wouldn’t run just as a way to obtain footage for a reality show. “It’s not a thing for a TV show or anything like that.”

Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam said Campbell should be taken seriously if he decides to run.

“He’s resourceful. He definitely has an eye for those who are not represented or underrepresented. I would pay attention to him,” Messam said. “I would definitely take him seriously.”

Most people know him for his court fight over obscenity charges and his music career, Messam said. “But I also know him as an activist in the community.”

Messam also said Cherfilus-McCormick “hit the ground running in Congress and is representing (us) in Congress as well, so it’s going to be very interesting to see how all this plays.”

Chris Smith, a former Democratic leader in both the Florida Senate and in the Florida House of Representatives, said when he was in high school he was among the people who picketed on behalf of Campbell and 2 Live Crew at the federal courthouse.

“When Navarro locked him up, I was in front of the federal courthouse on his behalf. That doesn’t make him my Broward congressman.”

Campbell’s activism in Miami-Dade County doesn’t necessarily give him connections to a district based in central Broward and takes in a large share of Palm Beach County. “It doesn’t seem plausible.

“That is not a community that you can just pop up (in) based on your stardom and move to the front of the line,” Smith said. It would be hard, Smith said, because “it’s not a stardom that says ‘Send me to Congress.’”

Criticizing incumbent

Campbell has offered multiple critiques of the incumbent, though he doesn’t use her name.

Campbell told the “Because Miami” podcast that voters have told him “we supported this young lady and once she got in, she turned into a diva. We can’t find her. She comes in and has one meeting and sends staff and nothing basically has gotten done.”

Cherfilus-McCormick, a lawyer who had previously been CEO of a family owned home health care company self funded her previous campaigns. “When you pay for the seat you really don’t have a genuine love for the actual community,” he said on the podcast.

Campbell would bring name recognition to the contest, but Cherfilus-McCormick would be a formidable opponent.

Cherfilus-McCormick defeated 10 other candidates in a special primary election to choose a Democratic nominee to succeed the late Congressman Alcee Hastings. In early 2022 she easily won the special general election and then a full term later that year.

Neither Cherfilus-McCormick nor her campaign responded to a request for comment.

Mitch Ceasar, a former Broward Democratic Party chair who has served as a legal counsel to the Cherfilus-McCormick campaign in the past but isn’t currently working for her, said he is “sure the congresswoman takes every potential challenge seriously.”

“The voters of the district need a constantly hardworking individual. That’s Sheila,” Ceasar said. “She’s all about hard work and not about pseudo documentaries.”

Campbell did not offer specifics on two key issues in the WFOR interview.

Asked about his position in relation to support for Israel after the Hamas terrorist attacks, Campbell said, “I’m for peace,” adding that the war “has been going on too long, you know. There has to be a solution to it.”

Campbell said he could contribute to a solution in Haiti. He said he would “hop on an airplane right now and go have a conversation with Barbecue.” Jimmy ChĂ©rizier, a former elite police officer, is the Haitian gang leader known as “Barbecue.” Campbell said the U.S. has had conversions with “more notorious gangsters than this young man.
You need to hear him out, hear what the issues are.”

Cherfilus-McCormick, the only Haitian American member of Congress, has been outspoken on the issue , pressing the Biden administration, Republicans in Congress and the international community.

Cherfilus-McCormick has taken a hard line on gang leaders like ChĂ©rizier, who are responsible for the deadly violence that has caused chaos in the nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince. She said they must have no role in the interim government the international community hopes moves Haiti toward a diminution of violence.

The district

The 20th Congressional District takes in most of the African American and Caribbean American communities in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

It includes much of central Broward, including all or parts of Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Lauderdale Lakes, Plantation, Lauderhill, North Lauderhill, Sunrise and Tamarac. It also takes in a large swath of the Everglades and goes north to the Glades communities near Lake Okeechobee and extends back east to include parts of Royal Palm Beach, West Palm Beach and Riviera Beach.

The district is one of the most heavily Democratic in the nation. And the partisan voting index from the independent Cook Political Report rates the district as D plus 25, which means it performed 25 points more Democratic than the nation during the past two presidential contests.

It is so Democratic that the winner of the Aug. 20 primary is all-but-guaranteed to win the November election and serve a term in the House of Representatives.

A major argument for legalizing the adult use of cannabis after 75 years of prohibition was to stop the harm caused by disproportionate enforcement of drug laws in Black, Latino and other minority communities. But efforts to help those most affected participate in the newly legal sector have been halting. Legal adult use has spread to 24 states. Nearly all have “social equity” provisions designed to redress drug war damages. About Cruise

"Cruise" is a song recorded by American country music duo Florida Georgia Line. It was first released to iTunes in April 2012 and then to radio in August 2012 as the first single from their extended play It'z Just What We Do. It was written by group members Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard with Joey Moi, Chase Rice, and Jesse Rice (no relation). It is included on their first album for Republic Nashville, Here's to the Good Times, which was released on December 4. "Cruise" is the best-selling country digital song of all time in the United States as of January 2014. The song is considered the foremost example of the genre of country music termed "bro-country". The recording by Florida Georgia Line reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 on its initial release, but dropped off the Hot 100 in February 2013. A couple of months later, a remix by rapper Nelly was released, and the song then re-entered the top 10. The song reached a peak of No. 4 on the Hot 100 chart in its 34th week, one of the slowest climbs to the top five in the chart's history. The song also logged 24 weeks at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs, becoming the longest-running No. 1 single on that chart at the time, until it was surpassed in 2017 by Sam Hunt's "Body Like a Back Road".   more »
