Astronaut Andreas Mogensen aboard the ISS

Andreas Mogensen returned to Earth in mid-March after a six-and-a-half month stint aboard the International Space Station . To mark his tenure as part of NASA’s Crew-7 mission, the Danish European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut has shared his souvenir from undock day—a guided video tour of the ISS.

It’s been a month now since I left the International @Space_Station . One of the very last things that I did on undock day, was film a tour of the Space Station. It is as much a keepsake for me as it is a way for me to share the wonder of the International Space Station with you.… pic.twitter.com/oFR0VXR06A — Andreas Mogensen (@Astro_Andreas) April 12, 2024

“It’s been a month now since I left the [ISS],” Mogensen posted to X early Friday morning. “… It is as much a keepsake for me as it is a way for me to share the wonder of the International Space Station with you. Whenever I will miss my time onboard ISS, and especially my crewmates, I will have this video to look at.”

Mogensen began his show-and-tell in the space station’s front end, above which a docked SpaceX Dragon craft awaited to take him home on March 12. On his left is the roughly 114-by-22-foot Columbus module—a science laboratory provided by the ESA back in 2008. Across from the lab is the smaller Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), nicknamed Kibō, which arrived not long after Columbus.

Astronauts waving in ISS

From there, Mogensen provides a first-person look at various other ISS facilities, including workstations, storage units, bathrooms, gym equipment, multiple docking nodes, and even the station kitchen. Of course, given the delicate environment, that module looks more like another lab than an actual place to cook meals—presumably because, well, no one is actually cooking anything up there.

International Space Station orbiting above Earth

But the most stunning area in the entire ISS is undoubtedly the cupola, which provides a 360-degree panoramic view of Earth, as well as a decent look at the space station’s overall size.

[Related: What a total eclipse looks like from the ISS .]

Speaking of which, Mogenen’s video also does a great job showcasing just how comparatively small the ISS really is, even after over 25 years of module and equipment additions. At 356-feet-long, it’s just one yard shy of the length of a football field, but any given module or transit space is only a few feet wide. Factor in the copious amounts of cargo, equipment, supplies, experiment materials, as well as the over 8-miles of cabling that wire its electrical systems, and it makes for pretty tight living conditions. Near the end of Mogensen’s tour, it only takes him a little over a minute to glide through most of the entire station back to his original starting point.

View of Earth from ISS cupola

Of course, none of that undercuts one of humanity’s most monumental achievements in space exploration. Although the ISS is nearing the end of its tenure (it’s scheduled for decommission in 2031 ), Mogensen’s keepsake is a great document of what life is like aboard the habitat. But for those now looking for an even more detailed tour, there’s always NASA’s virtual walkthrough .

International Space Station to go on tour with VR exhibit 'The Infinite'

For more than 20 years, the International Space Station has hosted crews numbering two to 13 astronauts at a time. Soon, though, it will open its hatches to a continuous stream of more than 100 people — and you can join them.

" THE INFINITE: Living Among the Stars ," a new, immersive touring exhibition, will open up the space station to the public by tapping into the largest media project ever filmed in space.

"With 'INFINITE,' over 100 simultaneous users will be able to free roam across a one-to-one reproduction of the International Space Station, in which they will have access to the immersive footage that we will have shot on the ISS," Paul Raphaël, co-founder of Felix & Paul Studios, said in a video statement.

For the past two years, Felix & Paul Studios, in collaboration with TIME Studios, has worked with eight international astronauts to film more than 200 hours of VR (virtual reality) footage on the space station. In 2020, the studios began releasing " Space Explorers: The ISS Experience ," a four-part immersive series for Oculus headsets. "THE INFINITE" expands upon that project to bring the sense of being in space to more audiences.

"From its inception, this project was designed to be natively cross-platform, so we could reach billions of people across the world," said Raphaël.

"THE INFINITE," which launches in Montreal this summer, brings together the VR headset experience with a 10,000-square-foot (930-square-meter) installation.

More than 100 people at a time will be able to free roam the VR recreation of the International Space Station in

Users entering "THE INFINITE" will navigate the International Space Station to find and interact with virtual spheres or other objects moving around the complex, which they will be able to manipulate with their hands. Accessing the spheres will unlock footage captured aboard the real space station.

Users will also interact with physical objects, such as at the end of the experience when they will sit down in chairs to watch a spacewalk outside of the ISS.

"We're going to take another immersive camera system outside the space station, and we're going to attach it to the Canadian arm [Canadarm2 robotic arm] that we are going to use as a celestial crane to film a full spacewalk in virtual reality," said Félix Lajeunesse of Felix & Paul.

“THE INFINITE: Living Among the Stars

After viewing the spacewalk and 35 minutes of free-roaming VR footage, users will doff the headsets and wander through a series of environments to "gently bring them down to Earth." The first-of-its-kind set piece was created by visual artist and composer Ryoji Ikeda, whose art explores the aesthetics of mathematical formulas.

'We wanted to create a visual narrative, a doorway to invite the audience to understand not only the content as it documents life in space, but also to unearth the poetry and the strong connection that we have with space exploration," said Phoebe Greenberg, founder of PHI Studio, which with Felix & Paul Studios created Infinity Experiences.

Round Room Live, a producer and promoter of live entertainment, has partnered with Felix & Paul and PHI to bring " THE INFINITE: Living Among the Stars " to venues across North America over the next five years. More cities, tour dates and ticketing information will be announced at a later date, but the tour is expected to reach an estimated audience of 1.2 million spectators.

Infinity Experiences also plans to release a digital component, allowing audiences to access the experience from home.

How to tour the International Space Station with Google Street View

tour of international space station

By Chris Barraclough

20th July 2017

  • Broadband & TV

You can now take a virtual tour of the International Space Station (ISS) thanks to Google Street View. Here’s how to see inside the ISS using Street View on your phone, tablet or computer, plus some of the best sights once you’re on-board.

To celebrate the 48th anniversary of the first manned mission to the moon, Google is offering us all a full virtual tour of the International Space Station. All you need is a smartphone, tablet or computer connected to the internet and you can virtually explore all 15 modules of the ISS, right now.

Like its Google Arts & Culture tours, the ISS Street View tour offers full annotations of the most interesting bits as you float around. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the life of the astronauts on board, while also proving slightly claustrophobic.

This is the second new Street View tour offered up this week. On Monday we were treated to a virtual rummage around some of the coolest real-life shooting locations for Game of Thrones, to commemorate the launch of the seventh season .

How can I virtually tour the ISS with Google Street View?

To start the International Space Station tour, just head to the  Google Street View ISS page , hidden away in the planets section of Street View .

tour of international space station

You’ll start off in the Cupola Observational Module, which is designed so astronauts can check out any exterior activities, including the approach of vehicles and any robot maintenance.

To look around, you can simply swipe your finger (if your device has a touchscreen) or click and drag your mouse. Each view affords you a full 360-degree look at your surroundings, which means a lot of tech and inexplicable stuff to admire.

You can click or tap to move around, while tapping the arrow on the left side of the screen opens up the information tab. This will tell you all about the area you’re currently exploring.

What are the highlights of the ISS Google Street View tour?

Google’s virtual tour of the International Space Station includes a lot of cool stuff to scrutinise, from all 15 modules as well as the two different docking vehicles. Here’s our pick of some of the best stuff you’ll see as you explore.

We’re enjoying having a shifty around the various areas, including the Muscle Atrophy Research Exercise System  which is used to study the effects of microgravity on human bodies. With some help from a basketball and fuzzy workout gear, apparently.

Also cool is the Russian service module, Zvezda , which includes all kinds of fascinating stuff. Enormous camera lenses sit side-by-side with fascinating computer tech and even clunky deskjet printers, all pinned to the walls.

Be sure to check out the Quest airlock too. In here you’ll see a couple of astronauts hanging out in their EMU suits (which stands for Extravehicular Mobility Unit).

The SpaceX Dragon Docking Vehicle is designed to transport astronauts as well as their cargo to destinations around the ISS. This includes sending supplies up to the station from Earth, before returning back to the planet. You can also explore the Orbital Cygnus Docking Vehicle , which again transports cargo to the ISS, before being loaded with trash and sent off to burn up in re-entry to Earth’s atmosphere. So much for a peaceful retirement.

International Space Station

The International Space Station’s role as a scientific laboratory and test bed for deep-space technology is crucial to humanity’s ability to improve life on Earth while pursuing opportunities in space.

Laboratory, Proving Ground, Home

The International Space Station (ISS) is a permanently crewed on-orbit laboratory that enables scientific research supporting innovation on Earth and future deep space exploration. From design to launch, 15 countries collaborated to assemble the world's only permanently crewed orbital facility, which can support up to seven astronauts and 300 to 400 experiments per crew increment, across an array of disciplines. The ISS is the cornerstone of human activity in low Earth orbit, a cooperative global effort to expand our knowledge and improve life on Earth while testing technology that will build a LEO economy and extend our reach to the moon, Mars and beyond.

Boeing officially turned over the U.S. on-orbit segment of the ISS to NASA in 2010 and continues to provide key engineering support services and continual capability enhancements, as well as processing for laboratory experiment racks. Due to its modular systems and the limited degradation of the space environment, technical assessments have shown the station could safely operate beyond 2030 if NASA and its international partners choose to do so.

Feature Stories

Commercial opportunities in low earth orbit.

ISS is hitting its stride as an incubator and business model in the commercial space ecosystem. Among the entities benefiting from ISS access is the Boeing-founded Genes in Space, a STEM contest that challenges students to design DNA analysis experiments for the ISS National Lab (managed by the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, or CASIS). Winners’ experiments are launched to ISS to be performed by astronauts, with published results.

Genes in Space 2019 winners Finsam Samson and Yujie Wang designed an experiment to analyze the impact of microgravity on gene expression. Their work may enable medical interventions for astronauts while in space, and therapies for people with stress-related health conditions on Earth.

Boeing also partners with the ISS U.S. National Lab on the MassChallenge startup accelerator’s “Technology in Space” competition. Winning companies receive funding and the opportunity to have their research conducted on the station so they can advance them to market. Qlibrium of Boston had its patch-sized, wearable drug-delivery pump launched to ISS in 2020. The technology holds promise for improved medicine delivery on Earth and on voyages through deep space.

Expanding science and technology development in low Earth orbit means expanding access. Boeing collaborated with Nanoracks on the payload services provider’s Bishop Airlock on ISS. It will open the station to more commercial users and research.

Benefits for Deep Space Exploration

The United States’ goal of sustained human exploration of deep space relies on advanced technologies such as surface habitats.

Boeing’s deep-space surface habitat concept builds on the company’s experience from designing, building and operating the ISS for more than 20 years, including recent advances such as superefficient lithium-ion batteries and roll-out solar arrays. Boeing is working on a habitation module and an airlock module that doubles as additional living/work space.

The ISS also gives researchers a unique environment to investigate the physiological and psychological effects of long-duration spaceflight, and to test deep-space technologies, in preparation for crewed missions to the Moon and Mars.

NASA confirms mystery object that crashed through Florida home came from space station

Watch fox 13 news.

NAPLES, Fla. - A strange item that hurtled through a Naples man's home was a piece of space hardware discarded from the International Space Station, NASA confirmed on Monday.

READ: NASA investigates whether space station battery crashed through Florida home

On March 8, Alejandro Otero, of Naples, posted on social media that an object he believed came from space tore through his home.

NASA has since completed an analysis of the object and determined that the cylindrical object came from a cargo pallet containing 5,800 pounds of aging batteries from the space station.

The batteries were dumped after new lithium-ion versions were delivered as part of an upgrade to the ISS.

The pallet had been jettisoned from the ISS in March 2021, according to NASA, and was expected to fully burn up during entry into the Earth's atmosphere on March 8. However, a piece survived and impacted Otero's home.

NASA analyzed the object at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.

"The agency determined the debris to be a stanchion from the NASA flight support equipment used to mount the batteries on the cargo pallet," NASA wrote in their statement. "The object is made of the metal alloy Inconel, weighs 1.6 pounds, is 4 inches in height and 1.6 inches in diameter."

In the statement, NASA pledged to find out how the debris survived entering the atmosphere and update modeling and analysis, as needed.

"NASA remains committed to responsibly operating in low Earth orbit, and mitigating as much risk as possible to protect people on Earth when space hardware must be released."

NASA confirms mystery object that crashed through roof of Florida home came from space station

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — NASA confirmed Monday that a mystery object that crashed through the roof of a Florida home last month was a chunk of space junk from equipment discarded at the International Space Station.

The cylindrical object that tore through the home in Naples on March 8 was subsequently taken to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral for analysis.

The space agency said it was a metal support used to mount old batteries on a cargo pallet for disposal. The pallet was jettisoned from the space station in 2021, and the load was expected to eventually fully burn up on entry into Earth’s atmosphere, but one piece survived.

The chunk of metal weighed 1.6 pounds (0.7 kilograms) and was 4 inches (10 centimeters) tall and roughly 1 1/2 inches (4 centimeters) wide.

Homeowner Alejandro Otero told television station WINK at the time that he was on vacation when his son told him what had happened. Otero came home early to check on the house, finding the object had ripped through his ceiling and torn up the flooring.

“I was shaking. I was completely in disbelief. What are the chances of something landing on my house with such force to cause so much damage,” Otero said. “I’m super grateful that nobody got hurt.”
