A note about Trek road bike model numbers: in general, higher model numbers mean higher original prices. This is especially true of models within a particular year.

1993+ RETAIL PRICES FOR TREKS

Suggested retail prices for Treks from 1993 to current are included in the specifications at BikePedia.com . These are listed under "Sugg Retail" for each bike. This database is a great resource.

The Trek Bike Archives , covering 2003 and newer Treks, also contains suggested retail prices.

LISTING OF TREK RETAIL PRICES BY MODEL AND YEAR

Visitors to this site have submitted the following pricing information for various Trek models at the time they were new. The prices are a combination of list prices and selling prices. (If you have any pricing on Trek steel road bike models, please send it along so it can be added here.)

WHAT IS MY USED TREK WORTH? (If "PRICELESS!" is not sufficiently accurate for you.)

eBay.com is the best practical guide. It can tell you what similar bikes recently sold for on eBay. Try search/ advanced search/ check "completed items only". This way, you get the final prices paid. Search for words like "Trek road" with words to exclude "aluminum carbon". You also can search more specifically, such as for "Trek 400". You might need to try for a few weeks to find a bike similar to yours, if it is not a common model.

To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.

Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".

A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.

The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.

The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. See Selling Suggestions for help in finding the right buyer.

Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.

SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?

Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21” (54cm) size and especially the 19” (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)

Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.

I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.

Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.

The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

Anyone got experience of running an old (90's) Trek Multitrack 700? I've been looking for a go anywhere bike; I'm liking the large volume 700 tyre capacity, cantis, and high chainset ground clearance. Very tempted by one for sale locally.

Not a great quality bike, but looks perfect to turn into a cheep rough track tourer.

It's now in the shed! Cromo frame, chunky 700 wheels, old school canti brakes and acres of ground clearance. Just what I need. Praying Mrs O doesn't spot it.

Not a bad bicycle, no lightweight, and the group set isn't bad, pretty dependable machine for commuting. This will help you figure out what year it is. http://www.vintage-trek.com/model_numbers1.htm

Have vague memories that I've seen one on a London ride.Had the impression that it was a good bike. Who cares about "lightweight" - it's quality that counts. A lot of good steel bikes were produced in the 90s - I have three. And a fourth from 2016 that owes a lot to 90s steel.

I've always liked rigid 26" wheeled steel mtb's, think they are great commuter / all rounders. Recently discovered the joy of old 700cc wheeled hybrid things, they offer everything you could want from one bike to be a tourer, commuter, and have really good off road abilities. Im getting sadder the older I get, just refuse to buy a halford cheep aluminium bike, instead spend money, time and effort farting about with ancient steel beasts. But I like them!

Now that's a nice bike - got yourself a bargain there. Great for day rides and i see no good reason why it couldn't go round the world with you. Like you, my rekationships with ally bikes are all in the past. Enjoy it.

The only problem I see is with the shifters, an upgrade there would not be remiss. But not necessary at present, if they are working well.

Fair point. I would actually do this sharpish though as "the industry" is discontinuing lots of decent quality stuff for less than 10 speed. Move quickly odav and you should find some good prices. I would also buy in some spares of key components - then let the industry continue on its merry way to 16 speed or whatever. And just get on and enjoy your bike.

A main selling point of the Trek 7200 Multitrack is its lightweight aluminum frame and high-quality components, which are easy on the wallet without compromising performance.

Note that this bike does not have a bell as a standard feature. However, cyclists consider it as a safety add-on item. It's available in multiple colors, allowing riders to choose their preferred color options.

You can purchase it from your local seller or online retailers like eBay.

Key Components and Details

Here, we’ll explore the key components of the Trek 7200, focusing on its frame and suspension, wheels and tires, and handlebars and seat. These elements contribute to a comfortable and smooth ride, making the Trek 7200 an ideal choice for those looking for a dependable hybrid bike.

Frame and Suspension

The Trek 7200 Multitrack features an aluminum frame that is both lightweight and durable. It offers a comfortable and smooth ride with its suspension fork, available in various sizes, including 15", 17", and more.

The adjustable suspension handlebar Bontrager ensures you can customize your bike's performance to suit your specific needs better while benefiting from a comfortable and dependable design.

Wheels and Tires

The bike has high-quality, fast-rolling tires and wheels that provide a reliable and smooth ride over various terrains. The puncture-resistant 700 x 35c tires ensure you can keep going without worrying about a flat, and the Bontrager Invert puncture-resistant tires provide additional protection and keep the tire in good shape.

Handlebars and Seat

The Trek 7200 Multitrack ensures rider comfort with its adjustable handlebars and plush saddle. The handlebars are made with a Bontrager-approved design, which prioritizes user comfort and easy maneuverability.

Additionally, the soft seat contributes to a comfortable ride, allowing you to enjoy long outings on your bike without discomfort. The adjusted stem adds another layer of customization, ensuring a perfect fit for every rider.

Also, it has a comfortable and adjustable seat post. The seat post can be tuned to fit different positions and riding styles when the bike is ridden on different terrains.

Riding Experience with the Trek 7200

The Trek 7200 offers a perfect balance between the characteristics of both mountain bikes and hybrid bikes, making it an ideal choice for those who want a comfortable ride for commuting and some off-road capabilities. Its head tube angle of 71.5° enhances its performance in climbing hills, giving riders more confidence when moving quickly on fast descents.

Additionally, the RST CT-COM C5 fork with 50 mm of travel ensures a smooth ride on various surfaces. It's well-suited for city biking, light trail riding, and commuting, making it a versatile option for experienced and beginner riders who want to learn biking.

However, it’s essential to note that the Trek 7200 is not designed for aggressive mountain biking and may not be the best choice for those seeking to leave the highway for a more extreme off-road experience.

Ergonomics and Rider Comfort

The Trek 7200 Multitrack is a popular classic all-around hybrid bike that offers riders both versatility and comfort, making it an excellent choice for various riding conditions.

One of the major strengths of the Trek 7200 Multitrack is its lightweight Alpha aluminum frame, which not only provides easy handling but also features a slightly steeper head tube angle for improved climbing and confidence during fast downhill rides. With an emphasis on comfort, the bike's geometry is designed to ensure a relaxed and enjoyable ride.

Also, this bike has been praised for its ability to accommodate various body sizes and riding styles. Its easy-shifting gears and responsive sealed brakeset Tektro offer smooth operation and increased control while navigating bumpy roads and potholes.

Comparative Analysis

Compared to the Trek 7100 , the Trek 7200 Multitrack has a slightly better drivetrain, boasting a 3x8-speed system over the 3x7-speed system of the 7100. This provides a wider gear range, allowing for easier uphill climbs and smoother riding on various terrains.

Additionally, the Trek 7200 and 7100 are affordable options, making them accessible to riders on a budget.

When compared to other bikes in its class, the Trek 7200 Multitrack holds its own in terms of value and performance. The bike offers a comfortable riding experience with its lightweight frame and wide gear range for versatile cycling on different surfaces.

However, it’s worth noting that some bikes may come with upgraded components, like disc brakes and semi-cartridge bearings used in the hub or bottom bracket, providing better braking performance in wet conditions.

Here is a comparison table of the key functions and specifications of the Trek 7200 Multitrack and its competitor:

As a bike enthusiast, I understand the importance of durability in choosing the right bike. We'll discuss the Trek 7200 Multitrack's durability, and build quality, including its Alpha White Aluminum frame, Tig-welded construction, and 3x7 drivetrain.

Trek 7200 Multitrack is a reliable, durable bike requiring easy, cost-effective maintenance. Its quality components contribute to its overall performance and longevity, making it a great choice for riders seeking comfort and durability.

The bike's Alpha White Aluminum frame offers lightweight, sturdy construction and exceptional corrosion resistance, ensuring a long-lasting and dependable ride. Also, you can mount bottle cages on the frame's edge to hold your water bottle.

The Tig-welded construction guarantees strong and reliable joints, further enhancing its durability. In addition, the 3x7 drivetrain from Shimano Alivio ensures smooth gear shifting and dependable performance on various terrains.

The bike’s drivetrain works with the chainguard cassette and the rear derailleur to provide a range of gear rations.

Benefits and Drawbacks

As mentioned, the Trek 7200 Multitrack is a solid hybrid bike that offers a lightweight aluminum frame, easy shifting, and a comfortable 50 mm travel fork, which is more than adequate for its primary purpose as a versatile bike for both on- and off-road exploration.

Also, the head tube angle of 71.5° provides riders with climbing efficiency and added confidence on fast downhill roads.

However, you should know a few downsides to the Trek 7200 Multitrack. Some users have noted the need to replace the stock seat with a more comfortable one to improve the overall riding experience.

The bike may also be less suitable for heavy-duty off-road excursions or hardcore mountain biking, but it is often an excellent choice for casual riders who want to traverse both paved roads and light trails.

Pricing and Resale Value

When considering the purchase of a Trek 7200 Multitrack hybrid bike, it's essential to know the pricing details and the resale value should you ever decide to sell the bike.

The Trek 7200 Multitrack hybrid bike generally falls within a budget-friendly range, with prices typically below $500. For the best deals on a Trek 7200, it's worth checking out from retailers and authorized dealerships.

Determining the resale value of a bicycle can be tricky; it depends on factors such as the bike's age, condition, and demand in the market. A practical guide for establishing the resale value of Trek bikes is to check completed listings on online retailers to find the final prices paid for similar bicycles.

With its budget-friendly pricing and reliable aluminum frame, the Trek 7200 Multitrack is an attractive option for those looking to invest in a quality hybrid bike without breaking the bank.

Frame and fork.

When it comes to biking, having a sturdy and reliable frame is key. This is no surprise since the frame is the backbone of the bike and can make a huge difference in terms of stability and control while you’re riding.

For the Trek 7200, you get a solid hybrid bike frame. This bike is made with Trek’s Alpha aluminum, which is known for its lightweight and durability. You’ll feel the difference as soon as you start pedaling, it’s that light!

trek 700 multitrack for sale

What’s really cool about the Trek 7200 is its slightly steeper head tube angle of 71.5°. This makes it perfect for climbing hills and gives riders more confidence and balance on fast descents. You’ll be able to handle any terrain with ease!

And for the fork, the Trek 7200 is equipped with an RST CT-COM C5 fork with 50 mm of travel. For a hybrid bike like this, that’s more than enough.

While suspension isn’t usually a top priority for hybrid bikes, the suspension on the Trek 7200 is designed to absorb the bumps of trails and potholes with ease.

Finally, let’s not forget about comfort! As a hybrid bike, the main focus of the Trek 7200 is on providing comfortable rides.

You’ll appreciate the suspension and enjoy smooth rides even on rough terrain, and you’ll feel like you’re gliding on air on paved roads and smooth city streets.

Gears and Brakes

Gears are one of the most important components of any bike, as they can make a huge difference in how easy or difficult it is to ride.

Luckily, the Trek 7200 has got you covered with high-quality components from Shimano, SRAM, and Bontrager. These components provide precise shifting and braking, making for smooth and safe rides.

One of the best things about the Trek 7200 is its 8-speed rear gear. This provides a wide gear range that’s perfect for both commuting, riding around your neighborhood or even taking on rough trails.

trek 700 multitrack for sale

You’ll always have the perfect gear to make the ride easy and enjoyable, whether on climbs or descents.

If you’re looking at an earlier model of the Trek 7200, you might find it fitted with 7-speed SRAM MRX Plus shifters and Shimano C102 front derailleur and Shimano Acera rear derailleur.

But in the later 2010 model, these components were upgraded to SRAM MRX Comp twist shifters, Shimano M191 front derailleur, and Shimano Alivio rear derailleur.

Either way, you can be sure you’re getting top-notch components that will give you efficient rides.

Now, let’s talk about the brakes. The Trek 7200 comes with Tektro linear-pull alloy brakes. These brakes are powerful and efficient, giving you the stopping power you need to stay safe on any ride. You’ll be able to stop quickly and easily, even when you’re gliding down a steep hill.

Wheels and Tires

Wheels and tires are crucial components of any bike, as they contribute to its overall performance and riding experience.

The Trek 7200 comes with a high-quality set of wheels, including an alloy front hub and a Shimano RM30 rear hub.

The Bontrager 750 rims have 32 holes and are more than strong enough for most commuters. These wheels are both durable and lightweight, and won’t weigh you down.

trek 700 multitrack for sale

Trek 7200 has very solid tires, but depending on which model of the Trek 7200 you have, you may be riding on different tires.

The earlier models were equipped with Bontrager Invert Puncture Resistant tires, while the later 2010 model has 700x35c Bontrager H2 Plus tires with a puncture-resistant belt.

No matter which tires you have, you can expect good traction on smooth surfaces. However, on rougher terrain, the tires may not perform as well. That being said, the tires are puncture-resistant and should withstand most road hazards.

Saddle and Handlebars

The Trek 7200 comes with a soft and padded Bontrager Boulevard saddle that is perfect for long-distance commutes. What’s even better is that the saddle is attached to an alloy seatpost with adjustable suspension.

trek 700 multitrack for sale

This means that your seatpost is more flexible, reducing the transfer of high-frequency road vibrations from your bike to your body. It also helps dampen the impacts of big hits from the road, making your ride smoother and more comfortable.

Also, the Trek 7200 comes with a Bontrager Approved handlebar made of solid steel and with a 50 mm rise.

You can always adjust the height of the handlebar to give you a comfortable fit. This means that you can ride for longer without experiencing any discomfort or strain on your back or shoulders.

Size and weight

When it comes to finding the perfect fit for your ride, the Trek 7200 hybrid bike has many sizes to choose from. With sizes ranging from 15″ to 25″, you’re sure to find the size that fits you just right.

The frame sizes are precisely 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, and 25 inches, giving you plenty of options to choose from.

And even with all the high-quality components, the Trek 7200 still manages to keep its weight down. With an average weight of about 26.4 lbs (11.9 kg), this bike is easy to handle and maneuver on the trails.

It’s not too heavy to carry around when you need to, but it’s still sturdy enough to support riders up to 275 to 300 lbs.

How much is the Trek 7200 Multitrack?

The current Trek 7200 value is estimated to be less than $100, you will most likely find one going from $65 to $110. But, keep in mind that it would be a used bike.

If you happen to find a brand-new Trek 7200, though this is very unlikely, expect the price to be from $250 to $450. It doesn’t go over $500.

IM Motors opens pre-sale for solid-state powered L6 sedan, starting under $32,000

Avatar for Scooter Doll

Just weeks after teasing the launch of its fourth all-electric model and promising some impressive specs, China’s IM Motors has officially opened pre-orders for its L6 Sedan. The automaker confirmed earlier today that the L6 will be powered by semi-solid-state batteries, offer a range of over 1,000km (620 miles), and deliver unique maneuvers like crabwalk and an intelligent driving chassis.

As we recapped in late March, IM Motors is a fairly young Chinese automaker specializing in EVs that operates as a joint venture between  SAIC Motor  and Alibaba. Since its 2020 inception, IM Motor has launched three vehicles overseas: the L7 sedan and the LS7 and LS6 SUVs.

This past February, however, IM Motors introduced its second all-electric sedan, the L6. As the first model to hit the market following parent company SAIC’s signed joint venture with QingTao Energy to develop solid-state batteries, we’ve kept our eye on the L6 to see what sort of range capabilities it will offer.

By late March, IM Motors co-CEO confirmed the new L6 will be one of the first in the Chinese market to be powered by genuine solid-state batteries , delivering massive range without sacrificing performance by settling for rear-wheel drive. Following a launch event today, we’ve learned the L6 is powered by semi-solid-state cells, similar to Chinese rival NIO.

Still, the upcoming IM Motors L6 offers lots of range and advanced tech at prices that will certainly remain competitive in the saturated Chinese EV market.

IM Motors L6

IM Motors L6 offers solid-state tech for under $46k

IM Motors officially launched the new L6 sedan in China today, opening pre-orders for three separate trims priced as follows: the L6 Max Standard Edition at a price of no more than RMB 230,000 ($31,800), the IM L6 Max Performance Edition at no more than RMB 299,900 ($41,475), and the L6 Max Lightyear Edition starting at no more than RMB 330,000 ($45,650).

Top comment by Grant

I hope this battery tech is as good as advertised. EV's are going to get a huge range boost soon. Of course it will take forever to show up in the states.

Only the top-tier Max Lightyear Edition features a 130 kWh semi-solid-state battery pack as part of a “quasi-900 V” platform offering ultra-fast charging and an all-electric range of over 1,000km. IM Motors shared that the non-solid-state versions of the L6 feature 90 kWh and 100 kWh packs that deliver CLTC ranges of 700-770 km $35-479 miles).

After teasing the capabilities late last month, IM Motors used today’s launch event to showcase the L6’s Vehicle Motion Control (VMC) as part of a new intelligent digital chassis, declaring the new sedan as the first in China with crab walk capabilities.

Other features include a cockpit powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chip, NVIDIA Orin X chips, and roof-mounted LiDAR that support the sedan’s ADAS functions, such as City Drive. Beta testing on that driverless software is expected this quarter, followed by a full rollout in China in Q4 2024.

Although slightly larger than the Tesla Model 3 and Zeekr 007 sedans , the IM Motors L6 is expected to be a competitor to those EVs in the segment, especially given its MSRPs and features. Pre-orders are now open in China and a telling sign will be how many consumers opt into an L6 and if they go for the solid-state version.

This Artificially Intelligent Pin Wants to Free You From Your Phone

The $700 Ai Pin, funded by OpenAI and Microsoft, can be helpful — until it struggles with tasks like doing math and crafting sandwich recipes.

On a recent afternoon, I held a bagel in front of me and said: “Look and tell me if this is healthy.”

A monotone voice responded that the bagel was unhealthy because it was high in carbohydrates, which could contribute to weight gain.

I wasn’t talking to a tech bro obsessed with the ketogenic diet. This was the Ai Pin, a $700 tiny computer featuring a virtual assistant pulling data from OpenAI (the research firm behind the ChatGPT chatbot), Google, Microsoft and others to answer questions and perform tasks.

Shaped like a lapel pin that may be a throwback to “Star Trek,” it attaches to your clothing with magnets and is supposed to offload tasks you would normally do with a smartphone, like taking notes, searching the web and shooting photos. Instead of a screen, the pin shines a green laser on your hand to show text. The device includes a camera, speaker and cellular connection.

The novel design of the Ai Pin, which was made by the start-up Humane, generated buzz when it was unveiled late last year. Companies including OpenAI, Microsoft and Salesforce have placed a bold bet — to the tune of $240 million in funding for Humane — that artificially intelligent hardware like the Ai Pin will become the next big thing after the smartphone. (The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft last year for using copyrighted news articles without permission to train chatbots.)

Humane said its goal with the Ai Pin was to offer technology that would help people avoid screens and maintain eye contact.

I liked the chic aesthetic and concept of the pin. It was occasionally helpful, like when it suggested items to pack for my recent trip to Hawaii. But as I wore it for two weeks, it presented glaring flaws. Often, its responses were off-putting, like with the bagel, or wrong, like when it said the square root of 49 was 49. Also, The Times’s photo shoot of the Ai Pin ended prematurely when the device overheated and shut down.

I wouldn’t pay $700 for this pin — let alone the $24-a-month subscription required to use its data services, including its T-Mobile cellular plan. But consider my curiosity piqued.

Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, Humane’s husband-and-wife founders, who worked at Apple, said updates issued through its servers would address many of the glitches I had encountered, including heat issues and shoddy math.

“It’s a journey, and we are just at the start,” Ms. Bongiorno said. “The first version is never the entirety of the vision.”

Here’s how my experience wearing the Ai Pin went.

Getting Started

Since the Ai Pin lacks a screen, users set up their accounts and other settings on Humane’s website. To unlock the device with a passcode, hold out your hand to project a green laser onto your palm. Pulling your hand outward increases the number while pulling it inward decreases it, and you select each digit by pinching two fingers on the same hand.

The laser can be used to tweak other settings, like connecting to a Wi-Fi network, and it can show a text transcription of the virtual assistant’s answers. Humane said the laser was intended to be used for no longer than nine minutes, but for me, it lasted about three before the Ai Pin complained it was too hot and shut down.

Several pieces of boxy equipment, in white, black and pink, related to the Ai Pin.

A Virtual Assistant

Beyond unlocking the pin with the laser, you’ll control the Ai Pin mostly with finger taps and your voice. The advantage of pinning a virtual assistant to my shirt became clear when I was moving around and thinking about the many things I had to do.

With one finger held down on the Ai Pin, I could summon the assistant and ask it to add tasks to my to-do list. This feature shined when I was packing for my vacation to Hawaii and adding items to my packing list, including T-shirts and swim trunks. When I asked the pin to suggest other items to pack for my trip there, it recommended a hat, sunscreen and other relevant items. Very cool.

However, the Ai Pin was less helpful in some other situations. When I was in Hawaii last week, I struggled to remember the name of a food truck near my hotel serving loco moco, so I asked the assistant to look it up for me. It said no such food truck could be found, leading me to search on my phone instead.

A Language Interpreter

An important feature on the Ai Pin is the ability to translate a conversation into another language in real time. With one finger held down on the pin, I could set a language to translate to, such as Mandarin. When I held two fingers down on the pin and spoke a phrase in English, the Ai Pin said it in Mandarin, and vice versa.

I tested this with several other languages, including Spanish, French and Indonesian. I confirmed that the interpreter was usually correct, though with converting English into Mandarin, it incorrectly translated “good morning” into “da jia hao,” which means “hello, everyone.”

Would You Look at That?

Humane is including a feature called Vision on the Ai Pin, which is labeled “beta” to signal that it is unfinished. The device uses its camera and A.I. to analyze your surroundings and give information about what you are looking at. This is what led to my quirky experience with a bagel, which only got weirder when I asked more questions.

I asked the pin how to make the bagel more delicious, and it proceeded to explain how to make bagels from scratch. Eventually, I asked the pin to come up with suggestions for sandwiches that could be made with the bagel. It generated a long list of ideas, including chickpea salad sandwiches, sloppy Joes and cucumber sandwiches with green chutney.

On vacation, I visited a botanical garden and asked the pin to identify a flower. “The flower is yellow with red stripes on the inside,” the pin said. This was correct, but it didn’t answer my question.

“It’s a Solandra maxima,” my wife said. She had taken a photo of the flower with her phone and uploaded it into a Google Images search. I felt sheepish.

Humane said it was working constantly to improve the Vision feature.

The Phone Stuff

Similar to a smartphone, the Ai Pin has its own phone number and cellular data connection to place phone calls and play music, and its camera can be used to shoot photos and videos.

Here is where the Ai Pin especially underdelivered. For something designed to make you spend less time on your phone, it isn’t better than a smartphone at any of those tasks. Photos and videos taken with the camera look poorly lit and blurry. To place a phone call, you can ask the assistant to call someone in your address book, but to dial a new number, you dictate the digits. For music, the device currently works only with Tidal, an unpopular music streaming service.

Ms. Bongiorno said the Ai Pin let her take more candid photos without a screen getting in the way. But to me, this was a disadvantage. Without a viewfinder, photos looked poorly framed.

Bottom Line

While the Ai Pin was occasionally useful and impressive, it was wrong, unhelpful or inefficient enough times to drive me back to my phone.

Gary Marcus, an A.I. entrepreneur, said the mistakes the Ai Pin made, like with the bagel, were the result of so-called hallucinations , the tendency for A.I. to guess and make things up when it can’t find the right answer. That’s a problem that remains unsolved in many A.I. technologies including ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Ms. Bongiorno acknowledged that hallucinations were happening with Gemini, the technology behind the Ai Pin’s Vision feature. She added that the technology would improve rapidly with user feedback and that the company had already finessed the pin’s reaction to bagels.

Mr. Marcus said no company yet had A.I. technology that was sophisticated enough to make a virtual assistant answer questions reliably.

“It’s almost like a broken watch being right twice a day,” he said. “It’s right some of the time, but you don’t know which part of the time, and that greatly diminishes its value.”

Yet there is a kernel of an idea worth preserving. I liked having an assistant on my shirt when it was actually helpful. I’ll pin my hopes on future iterations of the product — perhaps a cheaper one that lacks a camera and a laser.
