How to reach kashmir: 3 ways by air, road or train.

Each of us nurtures a dream of exploring a cherished destination, eager for the day it becomes a reality. Unquestionably, Kashmir stands tall among India's most sought-after vacation spots, invoking an irresistible allure for countless individuals yearning to plan on its journey.

This blog post serves as your comprehensive guide, offering insights on reaching this enchanting realm via air, road, or train. If you're ready to turn your dream into a tangible adventure, explore our diverse range of Kashmir tour packages designed to make your aspirations a splendid reality.

How to Reach Kashmir by Air

Assuming you are flying into Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the first thing you need to do is get to the airport. The best way to do this is by taking a taxi from your hotel or any other location in the city. Once you are at the airport, you will need to go through security and check-in procedures before boarding your flight.

The flight from Delhi to Srinagar is about 2 hours long and there are multiple flights available every day. You can also take a flight from Mumbai or another major Indian city, but it will likely be a bit longer. When you land in Srinagar, you will need to take a taxi or bus to your final destination.

How to Reach Kashmir by Road

It's also possible to reach Kashmir by road from various parts of India. The main highway that leads into Kashmir is the National Highway 1D, which connects the city of Jammu with Srinagar. This route can be quite scenic, but it can also be congested and dangerous during peak travel times. If you're planning to drive into Kashmir, it's important to be aware of the current situation on the highway and plan your trip accordingly.

How to Reach Kashmir by Train

The best way to reach Kashmir by train is to take the Jammu Tawi-Srinagar Express from New Delhi. This train runs daily and takes about 15 hours to reach Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir.

There are also a few other trains that go to Jammu, the closest major city to Kashmir, but these take much longer. Once you're in Jammu, you can either take a bus or a taxi to reach your final destination. How to reach Kashmir from Jammu

If you want to travel by road, the best route is from Jammu. You can take a bus or a taxi from Jammu to Srinagar. The journey takes about 8-9 hours.

If you want to travel by train, the nearest railway station is in Jammu. You can take a train from Jammu to Srinagar. The journey takes about 12 hours.

How to Reach Kashmir from Mumbai

Assuming you are starting from Mumbai, the best and most convenient way to reach Kashmir is by air. There are daily flights from Mumbai to Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The flight duration is approximately 3 hours. Alternatively, you can also take a flight to Jammu (the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir), which is well connected to Srinagar by road. The journey by road from Jammu to Srinagar takes about 8-9 hours.

If you are looking for a longer but more scenic route, you can take the train from Mumbai all the way to Jammu Tawi station. From there, you will need to take a bus or a taxi to reach Srinagar, which is about 220 km away. The train journey takes about 40 hours, so this option is only recommended if you have the time and patience for it.

How to reach Kashmir from Katra

If you are planning to visit the Kashmir Valley, there are a few different ways that you can reach the region. The most common way to reach Kashmir is by air, with regular flights departing from cities like Delhi, Jammu, and Srinagar. You can also reach Kashmir by road, with a number of bus and taxi services operating between cities like Jammu and Srinagar. Alternatively, you can take the train to Jammu Tawi station and then continue your journey by bus or taxi. Whichever way you choose to travel, make sure to allow plenty of time to reach your destination as the journey can be long and difficult.

With its snow-capped mountains and picturesque valleys, Kashmir is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. And while it is possible to reach Kashmir by air, road, or train, the best way to get there is by taking a flight. Not only is it faster, but you'll also get to enjoy some amazing views along the way. So next time you're planning a trip to Kashmir, make sure you book your tickets in advance and enjoy a hassle-free journey.

The best way to reach Kashmir depends on your budget and time constraints. If you have the time and money, flying is the fastest and most convenient option. driving takes longer but is cheaper, and taking the train is the slowest but most scenic option. No matter how you choose to get there, Kashmir is a beautiful place worth visiting.

What is the best time to visit Kashmir?

Kashmir is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is from April to October. This is when the weather is at its best, and you can enjoy all of the outdoor activities that the region has to offer. Keep in mind that July and August are the busiest months, so you may want to avoid these if you're looking for a more relaxed trip.

After reaching in Kashmir you should definetly explore places to visit in Kashmir .

How to Plan a Trip to Kashmir – A COMPLETE Travel Guide

How to plan a trip to Kashmir? I have visited Kashmir a few times and have written several detailed articles that can be of help to everyone planning a trip. This information is scattered in several posts and getting the details that you need can be a little time-consuming.

Best Time to Visit Kashmir

When is the best time to visit Kashmir? There is actually no straight answer to this question because it will depend on what kind of trip you were looking forward to.

If you want to see snow, January and February are ideal times. If you want to see lush green views, September will be the best time. For a honeymoon trip, I will recommend April and September.

If you want to see flowers and the Tulip Garden, you should plan for April. If you want to see Apple orchards, August and September is the best time to go.

For photography, a trip in the post-monsoon season will be best. For budget travelers, August and November are good times to go.

This however is just a brief overview. For a more detailed and month-by-month breakdown of this information, please take a look at When is the Best Time to Visit Kashmir .

Mobile Network and Data Connectivity

BSNL has the widest network in Kashmir but Airtel is better in terms of the quality of the network. Jio works decently well but the services of Vodafone and Idea are not that great.

The important thing that you should know is that only postpaid connections work in the valley. Irrespective of which network you were on, your phone will be dead as soon as you enter Kashmir if it was a prepaid connection.

But if it was a postpaid phone, you would have good reception and data connectivity in tourist destinations like Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. If you went a little offbeat, your phone may or may not work depending on the service provider.

I have covered this topic in great detail in another article Mobile Network and Data Connectivity in Kashmir that you can take a look at. I have given a region-wise breakdown of the network reception in this post.

Kashmir Trip Cost

How much will a Kashmir trip cost? This will depend on a lot of factors like the number of travelers, duration of the trip, mode of commute, personal preferences, etc. But with that being said, there is still an average per-person cost that can be calculated.

Take a look at this post – How to Calculate the Total Cost of Kashmir Trip . While I cannot give you the exact cost of the Kashmir trip, I can still give you an idea of how you can calculate your own Kashmir trip budget. That is the information that I covered in this article.

Using the numbers below, you will get a fairly good estimate of how much you will end up spending in the valley. These are some of the minimum expenditures that you will end up incurring for accommodation, taxi, food, shopping, etc.

Clothes to Pack for Kashmir Trip

The next important question will be related to your packing. The clothes that you need for visiting Kashmir will vary according to the season and month of your trip. It will also depend on the places you have in mind to visit and your mode of commute as well.

I will recommend taking a look at Clothes for Kashmir Trip – Things to Pack for Kashmir Trip for more information on this aspect. In this post, I have talked in detail about the kind of clothes that you should be packing for a trip to Kashmir in different seasons.

Places to Visit in Kashmir

Now let us take a look at the tourist destinations in Kashmir, places that you just cannot afford to miss. These are the destinations that will become the very highlight of your journey.

I am adding Srinagar first to the list because that is where you will have to go first. Srinagar will be your base to explore the beautiful valleys of Kashmir.

But is it just that? The answer is no.  It is not just a base to explore Kashmir but rather a place that deserves to be explored, a place of both natural and man-made beauty.

Shah Jahan a long time ago aptly called Kashmir the paradise on earth, and Srinagar is the heart of that paradise. With its serene blue lakes and magnificent gardens ringed by an Arc of Majestic Himalayas, it is a picture-perfect town that looks straight out of a painting.

There is just so much to see here and so much to do. This I believe is the very reason that despite all the unrest and tensions, Srinagar continues to remain one of the most visited tourist destinations in our country.

Gulmarg in my opinion is the biggest tourist attraction in Kashmir. Known as the meadow of flowers, it is a heavenly place to tread in that offers mesmerizing landscapes and an enthralling possibility of various adventure activities.

Such is the beauty of this tiny hamlet that it attracts people from all over the country throughout the year. It is possibly one of those destinations where the tourist season never ends.

From families to adventure enthusiasts, Gulmarg has a lot to offer everyone. It not only draws tourists from other parts of the country but also is a favorite weekend getaway for the local Kashmiris as well.

Below is a list of articles that I have posted on Gulmarg. I will recommend taking a look at these before visiting this beautiful little town.

If you were planning a winter trip to Gulmarg, you may want to check out the video below. This was shot during one of my trips to Gulmarg in the month of January.

The next destination that you must visit during your Kashmir trip is Sonamarg. The place is easily accessible, remains open for most of the year, has plenty of hotels, offers amazing views, and is perfect for all kinds of trips.

Public transport is also easily available. There is a daily bus between Srinagar and Sonamarg. Other than that, shared cabs also travel on the route regularly.

For accommodation, there is a wide range of hotels to choose from, both for budget travelers as well as someone looking for a luxury stay. Read on to find out more.

Below is a list of articles that provide the information that you need to know in order to plan your trip.

If you were planning on visiting Sonamarg in the winter season, you can also take a look at the video below to get more details on the topic.

The name Pahalgam needs no introduction. It is one of the most visited destinations of Kashmir, one that receives tourists all year long. No trip to Kashmir is complete unless Pahalgam is a part of the itinerary.

Located at a distance of about 100 kilometers from Srinagar, Pahalgam is best known for its awe-inspiring vistas, lush green meadows, dense forests, and pristine waters. The place is also noted for the annual pilgrimage to the shrine Amarnath Yatra that starts here in July and August.

In the articles below, I have talked about how a trip to Pahalgam can be planned, places you should visit there, accommodation, public transport, and several other useful tips.

  • Pahalgam – A Complete Travel Guide & Itinerary
  • What to see in Pahalgam – Sightseeing in Pahalgam
  • Best Time to Visit Pahalgam – When to go to Pahalgam

But in my opinion, the actual fun of visiting Pahalgam is in the winter season. This is when the natural beauty of this place is at its best. Take a look at the video below to know what I am talking about.

Drung Waterfall

Drung Waterfall, also known as Drang Waterfall or Durung Waterfall, is a destination that must find a place in your itinerary if you are planning a winter trip to Kashmir. It may not be that large in size but the sight that it presents in the winter season is truly majestic and is sure to charm you off your feet.

As the temperature in the valley drops, the water of this fall starts to freeze. By early January, the entire face of the mountain that it falls from is covered by a thick layer of ice. The water still continues to flow down but is surrounded by huge icicles and snow.

The waterfall is located about 42 kilometers from Srinagar and 16 kilometers from Gulmarg. It remains accessible for all 12 months and can easily be included in your trip to Gulmarg. You can visit Drung at any time of the year but it is in the winter season when the waterfall is truly at its best.

For more details on this one of its kind waterfall, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Drung Waterfall and What to See . You can also take a look at the video below for more details.

Gurez Valley

Gurez Valley is one of the least explored regions of Kashmir and the one that can truly be called an offbeat destination. It is a place of high scenic beauty that does not really get the attention that it truly deserves. The vistas and the natural beauty of the mountains that you see here are very different than what you will see elsewhere.

Usually, when you talk about visiting Kashmir, it is mostly 4 places that come to mind – Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. Even Srinagar just acts as a base to explore the other three places.

But Kashmir is so much more. There are so many other places here that will leave you mesmerized if visited. Gurez is one such destination that I will highly recommend that you find a place for in your travel plans.

How you can plan your trip to Gurez are details that I have covered in the posts below.

  • Gurez Valley – A Complete Travel Guide & Itinerary

how to plan a trip to kashmir

Let us now take a look at some offbeat destinations that do not find a place in everyone’s itinerary but are definitely worth visiting.

Yusmarg is located at a distance of about 50 kilometers from Srinagar in the Badgam district of Kashmir. At an altitude of 2,396 meters (7,861 ft), it is an alpine valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains and meadows of Pine and Fir.

It is one of those places in Kashmir that are immensely beautiful but do not get the attention that they rightfully deserve. But for someone wanting to go offbeat and stay away from the crowd, Yousmarg is perfect.

For more details on this destination, please take a look at Yusmarg – A Comprehensive Travel Guide & Itinerary .

Doodhpathri

Doodhpathri is a small hill station in Kashmir. It lies in a bowl-shaped alpine valley surrounded by snow-clad mountains and meadows of Pine Fir and Deodar. It sits at an altitude of 2,730 meters (8,957 ft) above sea level and receives heavy snowfall in the winter season.

The region does not have all-year road connectivity yet and in the months of peak winter, it can get very difficult to reach here. For the rest of the year though, a trip to Doodhpathri can actually be made in less than half a day.

To be honest, it is not yet a hill station as there is little to no development in the region. What you see is nature in its raw form. There are just a few houses of the local shepherds and that is the only sign of civilization that you will see here.

The area is largely unexplored and receives very little tourism. However, efforts are being made by the authorities to develop it as a tourist destination. JKTDC has also built a resort here for tourists who want to stay overnight. You can take a look at Doodhpathri – A COMPLETE Travel Guide & Itinerary to find out more.

Mughal Road

Not many people would know about the Mughal Road. Srinagar Jammu National Highway, also known as NH44, is often considered to be the only road connecting the cities of Jammu and Srinagar.

It is true that it is indeed a better maintained, wider, more traveled upon, and shorter way to travel between the two places but it is definitely not the only one.

There actually exists another route that is far more scenic, less crowded, takes you through some internal parts of Kashmir, and has existed for far longer than the regular NH44 highway. Yes, I am talking about the historical Mughal road.

This route is the alternate way to travel between Jammu and Srinagar and to reach some internal areas of Kashmir like the town of Rajouri. It is also a very scenic route that definitely deserves to be explored.

For more details on Mughal Road, you can take a look at the posts below.

  • Mughal Road – Route Detail, Sightseeing, Best Time
  • Peer ki Gali, Mughal Road – Trip Planning & Sightseeing

Aharbal Waterfall

Aharbal Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kashmir. It is also the most easily accessible one and yet never crowded. Located at a distance of only about 70 kilometers from Srinagar, it is a place that is amazingly beautiful but does not get the attention that it truly deserves.

If you are planning to visit Kashmir, I highly recommend that you find a day in your itinerary for a visit to Aharbal. How can you plan that is what I have talked about in the article below.

  • Aharbal Waterfall – A Complete Travel Guide & Itinerary

Can you visit Aharbal Waterfall in the winter season? It will depend a lot on the weather at the time of your trip but yes, a trip can be planned. Take a look at this short video below to see how this beautiful waterfall looks in winter.

Daksum Valley

Daksum, also known as Daksum Valley or Daksum Village, is a viewpoint or a picnic spot located on the Anantnag-Kishtwar road near Sinthan Top. Surrounded by lush green mountains and sitting right next to the Bringhi River, it is a popular spot among the locals for family outings and school picnics.

If you are someone who likes spending time in nature, away from the crowd in an offbeat place, Daksum may just be your cup of tea. It really feels like in the middle of nowhere and if you were here during the weekdays, there would hardly be anyone around. For more details, please read How to Plan a Trip to Daksum Valley .

Sinthan Top

Sinthan Top, also known as Sinthan Pass, is a mountain pass located in Kashmir’s Breng Valley, on the road that runs between Anantnag in Kashmir and Kishtwar in Jammu. At an altitude of 12,500 ft, the top of the pass is also known as the 360-degree viewpoint as it offers a charming panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and the valley.

It is a beautiful mountain pass that should find a place in every tourist’s itinerary who is coming toward Pahalgam. Due to its close proximity, Sinthan Top can be easily incorporated with a trip to Pahalgam. The drive from Srinagar to Sinthan Top through the Daksum Valley is also quite scenic and offers a chance to visit some other destinations like Achabal Gardens, Kokernag, and Daksum.

For more details, please read How to Plan a Trip to Sinthan Top and take a look at the video below. This video covers both Daksum Valley as well as Sinthan Top because both these places are right next to each other.

Chatpal Valley

Chatpal, also called Chattabal, is not really a name that many tourists know about. It is a small valley located near Pahalgam but while Pahalgam receives thousands of visitors each year, almost no one goes in the direction of Chatpal. It is one of those places in Kashmir that are still unexplored and yet to find their place on the tourist map.

The majority of the folks you will find in Chatpal will just be the locals from Anantnag or any of the nearby villages, out there for a picnic or a family outing. Even they visit Chattabal usually over the weekends, on Sundays. For the rest of the week, you will hardly see anyone there.

If you are someone who likes to go to offbeat places, away from the crowd, and spend some time in peace, then Chattabal will surely look charming to you. For more details, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Chatpal Valley and check out the video below.

Public Transport in Kashmir

The best way to travel to Kashmir is either by your self-owned vehicle or a private taxi. But if you are a budget traveler, you can also opt for public transport which is available in the form of buses and shared taxis. The problem however is that it is not frequent.

It will be hard to find a JKSRTC bus anywhere in Kashmir. You will have to rely on mini-buses and shared cabs operated by the locals. They do not have a set schedule or timetable but are available throughout the day.

For more details on this topic, please take a look at How to Travel in Kashmir by Buses & Shared Cabs . In this post, I have provided complete details on how you can commute from Srinagar to other places by public transport.

VARGIS KHAN

If you are planning on renting a taxi for your trip, the posts below can help you get a cost estimate. An important thing that you should remember is that places like Pahalgam and Gulmarg have their own taxi rates.

What it means is that if you rented a taxi to Pahalgam from Srinagar, it could only drop you in Pahalgam. To visit local places like Betaab Valley, Chandanwari, and Aru Valley, you will have to rent a local cab in Pahalgam.

The same rule applies to Gulmarg. If you want to go for a drive to Bota Pathri, you will have to rent another cab in Gulmarg for that.

Similarly, this rule is also applicable if you intend to move on to Kargil, Zanskar Valley, or Ladakh after exploring Kashmir. Take a look at the posts below to find out taxi rates applicable for these particular regions.

  • Srinagar Taxi Rates
  • Pahalgam Taxi Rates
  • Sonamarg Taxi Rates
  • Gulmarg Taxi Rates
  • Kargil Taxi Rates
  • Ladakh Taxi Rates

Renting a Bike

Renting a bike in Srinagar is a great way to explore for people who reach Kashmir by flight. There are a few bike rentals in the city which you can get the bikes from.

Please take a look at How to Rent a Bike in Srinagar and Srinagar Bike Rental Rates . From both of these posts, you can get to know the procedure and the cost involved.

Self-Drive Rental

If you would however like to rent a car in Srinagar and drive it around on your own, that is also an option. Please take a look at How to Rent a Self-Drive Car in Srinagar for more details.

Itinerary Planning

Your final itinerary for Kashmir will entirely depend on the number of days you have in hand, your budget, and your preferences. But I will recommend taking a look at How to Plan Your Itinerary for Kashmir .

In this post, I have shared different examples of itineraries based on the time at hand. You can pick any one of the suggested itineraries and either follow it completely or modify it as per your requirements.

Food to Try in Kashmir

Your trip to not just Kashmir but any place is incomplete unless you have tasted the local cuisine. That in my opinion is actually one of the best parts of traveling to different places.

The mouth-watering local food to try in Kashmir is an experience that you just cannot miss. Below is a comprehensive list of what to eat and where.

A common question that gets asked most often is about vegetarian food and its availability. You do not have to worry about that as well.

There are a lot of places all over Kashmir where they only serve vegetarian, even Jain food as well. So finding a place to eat will not actually be a problem.

You can take a taxi for 5 days but if you are planning a trip in winter, then you will have to change at Tangmarg. For rest of the year, it can be the same cab.

Hello Vargis bhai, Thanks a lot for detailed information, Extremely helpful to people like us to build DIY travel plan.

I am considering trip to Kashmir from Oct 14 to 24, Mainly Srinagar, Gurez, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, , is this good time to visit Kashmir and all these places i want to cover.

I am planning below itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive Srinagar Day 2: Srinagar Local Day 3: Sringar Gurez Day 4: Gurez Day 5: Gurez to Gulmarg Day 6: Gulmarg to Pahalgam Day 7: Pahalgam Day 8: Pahalgam Day 9: Pahalgam to Sringar and flyout

Please let me know your thoughts if i should make any adjustment to above plan.

This is a good plan Sachin Bhai. I am assuming that you are going to book a taxi for the trip?

Yep, thanks for your feedback , Yep I plan to book taxi for entire trip, few questions.

1) Is Toyoto Etiros/Dzire is good for Gurez trip of you need to have Innova /Scorpio ? Do you know if Razdan pass would be open during October or there is chance of closure ?

2) I changed my plan a bit to skip Gulmarg as I am not interested in doing Gondola, so is there anything else interesting to do there, I assume As i am covering Doodthpatri from Srinagar, the scenary would be similar., what is your suggestion ?

3) what is your opinion on doing Day trip to Yusmarg vs Doodhpatri, from Srinagar ?, doing both on one day could be hectic right ? which one I should do Yusmarg or Doodhpatri ?

Here is my final plan with and without gulmarg as below, let me know your suggestion.

Itinerary 1: without Gulmarg Day 1: Arrive Sringar and go to Pahalgam Dah 2: Pahalgam Local Day 3: Pahalgam Local Day 4: Pahalgam to Gurez Day 5: Gurez Local Day 6: Gurez to Srinagar Day 7: Sringar local Day 8: Srinagar Doodhpatri Day 9: Srinagar Flyout in evening

Itinerary 2: with Gulmarg Day 1: Arrive Sringar and go to Pahalgam Dah 2: Pahalgam Local Day 3: Pahalgam to Gulmarg Day 4: Gulmarg to Gurez Day 5: Gurez Local Day 6: Gurez to Srinagar Day 7: Srinagar Local Day 8: Srinagar DoodthPatri Day 9: Srinagar local and Flyout.

1. Razdan Pass usually remains open in Oct. Scorpio / Innova will be better but it depends on the number of people traveling 2. Yeah, the scenery is more or less similar 3. Same on one day will be hectic. Doodhpathri is better

If the taxi driver is agreeing, the second plan would be better

Thanks a lot for your Feedback Vargisbhai ! Yes we are 3 people so I assume Dzire or Etios should be good enough to cover Dawar – Chakwali route, right ?

For Chakwali route, you will have to hire a Sumo from Dawar. The drivers from Srinagar usually refuse to go on that route due to extremely bad roads. A hatchback or a Sedan driver will definitely not go

Dear All, This is the review about Kashmironline. We booked on a package in this summer for a family through them, but the hotel which they have opted in Srinagar was not good. No power to stay, no water and no hot water as well. We have to ask for all service every now and then. But upfront the agency collects the payment. Also, they never respond. The reason for booking through a travel agent is that we will not have issues and it will be a safe travel, but here its very bad, there will be a response saying that they will do, but nothing will happen. Remember people travelling to Srinagar / Kashmir make sure you are clear on package, would recommend to make arrangements on your own. Do not depend on any travel agents. Specially Kashmironline at all. They are not friendly and held me in a hotel to pay the final amount. Never trust on any customer and they do not need any customer satisfaction. I have informed very clearly the balance 7-8% (Approx 9000) of amount will be paid on last day of my travel in morning, irrespective of telling and informing the same, they holded in the hotel in the lobby asking for balance payment two days prior itself. The agency called up the hotel informed that before I leave collect the balance money. That looks very bad in front of others asking for money as if am going to move away without paying from them. My only question is if you guys or agency never trust on customer, how do you expect the customer to trust you. If something goes wrong, you will never revert back right. Now, I had a bad and worst stay in Srinagar, they never responded to me anything about that at all. The kashmironline person was apologizing but nothing happened. The issues repeated thrice for all 3 days of stay, our stay was ruined. We went for sight-seeing late for all 3 days and we are not provided with basic necessity of things to stay. Irrespective of informing that Iam not comfortable on the first day itself. Please be aware of these things in Kashmir. Never book though kashmironline at all. They never bother about any feedback or comfortable stay of customer. Only money is important. The driver they organized doesn’t even have a courtesy and he dropped us the railway station by 9pm and have requested him to take me to 5km nearby for dinner which he denied. He never answered any calls after dropping us. Irrespective of informing that we need to have dinner before dropping us, he never bothered that Iam with 2 kids without food travelling for whole night. He was keen on moving away since the money is fully paid a day prior. Important is he knows entire story of this issue. They never change and felt bad for booking with them. Entire trip is ruined and I have give other hint to save other atleast, not to get cheated. Since no one save me.. kashmironline These details are from my recent personal experience during the month of May 2023.

With Regards, Balasubramaniam.

Thank you Bala Bhai for sharing your experience. Most of these online travel platforms are more or less the same. They act as mediators only. I always tell people to not go with any online travel platform.

Hello Vargis Thank you so much for your details, Want to choose one destination among Doodhpathri, Yousmarg and Gulmarg, please advise.

' src=

Hi Vargis, Thank you for your sharing and your article very details. If you don’t mind please suggest best travel agent in Kashmir who can arrange. We plan our trip on December 2023.. tq

' src=

Hello. Thanks for the details. I am planning Gulmarg directly from the airport (2 nights) , then Sonmarg (2 nights), then Pahalgam (3 nights) and then Srinagar (2 nights). Is that itinerary okay ? Are these places equidistant

2 and 3 days is a bit much. Gulmarg 1 day, Sonamarg 1 day and Pahalgam 1 night should be more than enough. You can spend rest of your time visiting other places.

' src=

Vargis Ji, we are not getting tickets for Gondola Ride. what would be other options?

No other option bhai. You can check at the counter if anyone is selling in black

' src=

Hi I am visiting from may 1 to 6 ., this is my first trip to kashmir solo, will travelling to Kargil from Srinagar for 2 days be good ..?

That road is not open yet. There is no telling if it will open by May 1

What a great Blog. Covers almost everything. The best part is that it is not commercial blogs, which generally have an interest in the places they mention. You have written in simple language and from your first-hand experience. I am a Sr. Citizen and also handicapped. I use an artificial limb, but mobility is not an issue (maybe rocky climbing and snow/water). I do travel a lot. My question is: Will you recommend Gondola Phase I and II? My Travel Agent has custom-built an Itinerary for my wife and me using taxis only for the 2 of us. I was told that there is a Union issue and private taxis are not allowed in Gulmarg and Pahalgam and I will have to book local taxis there.

Please advise keeping my handicap in mind. Thanks.

I intend to travel in mid-September.

Thank you for your kind words, Mr. D’Souza.

If you are going to stay in Gulmarg overnight, then yes, I will recommend the Gondola ride. If you are just planning a day trip, it will be best to skip it.

You do not need to rent another taxi in Gulmarg for sightseeing. They may ask to take you to Bota Pathri by renting another cab but avoid that. There is nothing there. All the other places in Gulmarg are near the market area. No additional taxi is needed.

Yes, you will have to rent another taxi in Pahalgam for local sightseeing. Srinagar taxi will not be allowed there.

Hello Vargis, your blogs are awesome, provides complete details one need to plan themselves. Great work! I’m confused in choosing one between yusmarg and doodhpathiri. If i have to select one of these, which one should it be? TIA

Hello Priya Ji – Thank you for your kind words. Both of the places are equally beautiful but if I have to pick one, I will go to Doodhpathri.

There are so many very well known and most liked temples in Kashmir I didn’t find any mention of these temples and places in your article is there any particular reason or you missed it In case you need any help to draw your attention towards those places I can do that

Pran Bhai Most of these temples are located in the old Srinagar town and I never had the chance to visit there until recently. I do not put any information on the blog until I have been to that place. Please see this post. I did visit the temples and highlighted them

https://vargiskhan.com/log/srinagar-old-city-tour/

If you have information on these temples, please do let me know and I will update. The two that I have been to is the Mangaleshwar Mahadev temple and the Ganesh Ji temple in Ganpatyar. I know there are a lot many others and I plan on visiting them during my next trip so that I can write a post about the temples in Srinagar.

Hi Vargis, your blogs are just out of this world. You can start publishing “Vargis Planet”

I have a mobility issue. Though I drive but I walk with crutches and small distances only. I followed your blog on Prashar Lake and you had clarified all my concerns so well that I drove upto the last possible point without any issue and then a little walk to the point from where the lake is visible. Though I didn’t trek down to the lake and temple. That was little too much for me.

Anyway, I am now planning to drive to Kashmir in Sept 1st week and plan to spend 3 days each at Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg. I wanted to ask you how long is the walks at various gardens in Srinagar. I also plan to do Doodhpatri, Yousmarg and Achabal.

Is there too much to walk in Phase 1 and 2 of Gandola, also Sonmarg, Kokernag, Daksum areas? I will be thankful if you can reply to me and help me plan better.

Hi Swati – Sorry I had been traveling myself for the last couple of months and did not see your comment until now. Sorry for the late reply. I guess you are already in Kashmir by now.

Planning a trip to this breathtaking region requires careful consideration of various factors to ensure an unforgettable experience. In this detailed and engaging guide, we will answer the most frequently asked questions and provide you with the tools to plan your dream Kashmir trip.

Let’s embark on this incredible journey together.

How to Plan Kashmir Trip

Imagine waking up to the melodious chirping of birds, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and serene lakes. That’s the magic of Kashmir – a destination often referred to as “Paradise on Earth.” Planning a trip to this picturesque region can be both exciting and overwhelming. But fear not, because in this personalized guide, we’ll take you through every step of planning your dream Kashmir trip.

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure!

Best Time to Visit Kashmir: When to Experience Magic

Setting the dates, itinerary planning: crafting your kashmir experience, must-visit places in kashmir: unveil the wonders, navigating mobile networks in kashmir: what you need to know, culinary delights: savoring kashmiri cuisine, navigating kashmir’s roads: understanding taxi rates, finding the perfect accommodation in kashmir: a guide to resting comfortably, budgeting for your kashmir trip: planning your finances, packing for kashmir: what to wear.

Choosing the right time to visit Kashmir is vital for a remarkable adventure. The region showcases its beauty in different seasons:

  • Spring (March to May): During this period, you’ll witness blooming gardens, pleasant weather, and the famous Tulip Festival in Srinagar.
  • Autumn (September to November): Enjoy the vibrant landscapes as the leaves change color, making this season perfect for photography and trekking.
  • Winter (December to February): Snow lovers rejoice! Kashmir transforms into a winter wonderland, ideal for skiing and snowboarding.
  • Monsoon (June to August): While the region remains lush during these months, it’s best to avoid this season due to heavy rainfall and potential travel disruptions.

Tip: Avoid planning your trip during the Amarnath Yatra season. During this period, millions of pilgrims flock to the Amarnath Cave, causing increased congestion and potential accommodation shortages in the region. Planning your visit outside of this time ensures a more tranquil and hassle-free experience in Kashmir.

The first step in planning your Kashmir trip is setting the dates. Consider the best time to visit based on your preferences. Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are ideal for pleasant weather and blooming gardens, while Winter (December to February) offers a snowy wonderland. Avoid the monsoon season (June to August) to ensure clear skies.

Crafting a well-rounded itinerary is pivotal to making the most of your Kashmir trip. Consider the following aspects, keeping in mind that the ideal itinerary can vary for different types of travelers, whether you’re traveling with kids, as a couple, or with a family:

Destination Prioritization:

Begin by listing your must-visit places, taking into account your interests and the time available. Prioritizing your destinations helps you allocate sufficient time for each one and ensures you don’t miss out on any highlights. If you’re traveling with kids, consider including child-friendly attractions and activities.

Travel Duration:

Calculate the number of days you’ll be spending in Kashmir. This will determine the pace of your trip and how much time you can allocate to each destination. Keep in mind that traveling with kids or as a family may require a slower pace to accommodate their needs and interests.

Local Events and Festivals:

Check for local events, festivals, and celebrations that might coincide with your visit. Participating in or witnessing these cultural events can add a unique dimension to your trip. Conversely, it’s essential to be aware of any festivals that could lead to increased crowds and accommodation challenges, especially when traveling with a family.

Seasonal Activities:

Consider the time of year you’re visiting and plan activities accordingly. For example, if you’re traveling with kids, you might want to incorporate visits to parks, nature reserves, and attractions suitable for children. If you’re a couple seeking adventure, plan activities like trekking or skiing.

Weather Conditions:

Kashmir’s weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for fluctuations. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and pack accordingly. If you’re traveling with kids, ensure you have appropriate clothing and gear to keep them comfortable and safe.

Local Cuisine Exploration:

Factor in time for culinary experiences. Don’t rush through meals; savor the local Kashmiri cuisine at various restaurants and cafes. Try traditional dishes and savor the flavors that make Kashmiri food renowned. Consider the dietary preferences and needs of your fellow travelers, especially if you have kids.

Relaxation and Leisure:

Allocate moments for relaxation and leisure. Kashmir’s serene landscapes invite you to unwind, soak in the tranquility, and reflect on your experiences. Customize your leisure activities based on the preferences and energy levels of your travel companions, whether they are family members or your significant other.

Local Culture and Interaction:

Engage with the local culture by attending cultural events, interacting with the friendly Kashmiri people, and exploring local markets. These interactions can provide deep insights into the region’s heritage and traditions, and they can be both educational and enjoyable for children.

Flexibility:

Lastly, maintain flexibility in your itinerary. Different types of travelers have unique needs and interests, so be open to adjustments based on their feedback and preferences. Being adaptable will allow you to cater to the diverse experiences and expectations of your travel companions.

By considering these aspects and tailoring your itinerary to the specific needs and preferences of your travel group, whether it’s a family with kids or a couple seeking a romantic getaway, you’ll be well-prepared to create a balanced and fulfilling Kashmir experience that caters to everyone’s interests and ensures you make the most of your time in this mesmerizing destination.

Tips for Exploring Offbeat Places in Kashmir:

  • Weather Preparedness: Offbeat places may have limited infrastructure, so be prepared for changing weather conditions. Pack accordingly, and check the local weather forecast before heading out.
  • Permits and Permissions: Some offbeat areas may require special permits. Research the entry requirements and obtain the necessary permissions in advance.
  • Respect Nature and Culture: Be respectful of the environment and local customs. Leave no trace and engage with the local culture in a respectful manner.
  • Safety First: Safety should always be a priority. Inform someone about your itinerary, carry essential safety gear, and be cautious when venturing into remote areas.

Exploring the offbeat treasures of Kashmir offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and experience the region’s authenticity. While famous destinations are undoubtedly stunning, don’t miss the chance to uncover the hidden wonders, such as Doodhpathri, that make Kashmir a truly enchanting destination.

When it comes to mobile network connectivity in Kashmir, understanding the landscape of service providers is essential for a seamless communication experience. Here’s a breakdown of the network options, along with some important insights:

1. BSNL: The Widest Network in Kashmir

  • BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) offers the broadest coverage in Kashmir, making it a reliable choice for staying connected, especially in urban areas.

2. Airtel: Quality Network for Better Connectivity

  • Airtel stands out for its network quality in Kashmir. Travelers seeking a dependable connection often opt for Airtel due to its reliable performance.

3. Jio: A Decent Choice for Connectivity

  • Jio, while not as widespread as BSNL or Airtel, still offers decent connectivity in many parts of Kashmir, including popular tourist destinations.

4. Vodafone and Idea: A Mixed Bag

  • Vodafone and Idea, while present, may not offer the same level of service quality as BSNL, Airtel, or Jio. Travelers might experience variable connectivity with these providers.

Postpaid vs. Prepaid: A Crucial Distinction

  • The most critical piece of information for travelers to Kashmir is that only postpaid connections work in the valley. If your phone had a prepaid connection, it will be rendered unusable as soon as you enter Kashmir.

Where to Expect Connectivity:

  • In popular tourist destinations like Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam, postpaid connections from any major service provider should provide you with good reception and data connectivity.
  • When venturing into offbeat areas, the availability of network coverage can vary significantly based on the service provider. It’s advisable to check with the local population or consult your service provider for information on connectivity in specific offbeat locations.

By understanding these nuances of mobile network connectivity in Kashmir, you can make informed choices about your communication needs during your visit. Whether you’re exploring renowned tourist spots or embarking on offbeat adventures, staying connected will enhance your overall experience in this mesmerizing region.

When you explore the picturesque landscapes of Kashmir, having a reliable mode of transportation is crucial. Taxis are a popular choice for getting around, but it’s important to understand how taxi rates work in this region.

Standard Taxi Rates

In Kashmir, taxi rates can vary depending on factors such as the season and distance. When you rent a taxi in Srinagar, for instance, it will typically cover your journey to your chosen destination, be it Pahalgam, Gulmarg, or other nearby locations.

Important Note: Places like Pahalgam and Gulmarg have their own taxi rates, which is an important aspect to remember. This means that if you hire a taxi in Srinagar to reach Pahalgam or Gulmarg, it will drop you off at your destination within these towns. However, to explore local attractions like Betaab Valley, Chandanwari, Aru Valley in Pahalgam, or Bota Pathri in Gulmarg, you will need to rent a local cab within these respective areas.

Inter-Region Travel

If you plan to venture beyond Kashmir and explore regions like Kargil, Zanskar Valley, or Ladakh after your Kashmir exploration, keep in mind that the same rule applies. You’ll need to rent another taxi or vehicle in your new destination to continue your journey.

Understanding these taxi rate variations ensures a smoother and more cost-effective travel experience in Kashmir. By being aware of the local taxi norms and planning your transportation accordingly, you can seamlessly navigate the region’s stunning landscapes and explore its diverse attractions.

How to Reach Kashmir

Kashmir is the place where pure scenic untouched natural beauty combines seamlessly with the rich cultural heritage. Kashmir valley has always attracted philosophers, thinkers, adventurers, and curiosity seekers from all over the world ever since it was discovered. The rolling green hills and snowcapped peaks are set amidst the incredible backdrop of thick green forests, fruit-bearing trees, and an incredible selection of flora and fauna which further adds beauty to this place.

Centuries ago, Hinduism was the religion that had flourished there. Followed by Buddhism and Islam, Kashmir valley became the melting pot of various beliefs, traditions, and cultures. Visiting Kashmir will make you feel closest to heaven and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Wondering how you can reach Kashmir in the best possible way? Here’s how!

If you are planning on taking the shorter and more convenient route, then a flight journey will be the best way for you to get to Kashmir. If you are willing to spend some extra bucks and reach Kashmir in complete luxury and within just a couple of hours, then air travel is just the thing for you. Srinagar airport is located at a distance of around 15 kms away from the main city. It is very well connected to different Indian states through domestic flights like go air, indigo, jet airways, and air India. You can easily get to Kashmir from places like Goa, Delhi, Jammu, Mumbai, Leh, etc. Once you reach Srinagar airport you can book a taxi service which will get you to your accommodation easily. The flight journey will definitely play to your benefit because air travel will save you a lot of time and energy which you can choose to spend in the best possible manner in Kashmir.

The best part about planning a trip to Kashmir is that you can travel easily any time of the year since it falls within the rain shadow area of the Himalayan mountain ranges. You can plan a road trip easily at any time. You have to just get your car and get going! There are very well-connected roads leading up to Kashmir from various different parts of India. State and private run buses are a common sight to see. You can choose to get to Kashmir and then get a bus leading up to your destination. If you are traveling on a limited budget, then road tripping on buses or hitchhiking would be the perfect option to get around. The roads are well maintained and intensely interconnected through roads leading to neighboring cities, towns, and villages. This has drastically improved the connectivity among the people of Kashmir and has also been a boon for travelers and visitors. National Highway 1-A connects Srinagar to Jammu, along with the excitingly iconic Jawahar Tunnel which further goes on to connect Srinagar to the Jammu valley.

If you want to take it easy and have some extra time in hand to sit back, travel, and relax your time away, then train travel is the best option for you. The tickets are very cheaply available and make for a great way to spend some extra time with your family and loved ones. However, the nearest railway station reaching to Kashmir is situated about 330 kms away from the main city of Kashmir and caters to a massive range of trains from different corners of India. Regular trains include New Delhi – Jammu Tawi Rajdhani Express, Jammu Tawi Express, and Jammu mail are a couple of common trains operating from Delhi. Just like in the case of the airport, it will be easy for you to get yourself a cab or a taxi service. The roads leading up to the main city of Kashmir are very well connected and in good shape enabling smooth transportation for not just travelers and tourists but also for locals as well.

Inter-State and Inter City Transportation

Let’s just get this right off the bat, the most common and dependable mode of transportation within Kashmir is primarily on taxi and cab services. When it comes to cab service for hire, Ola and Uber are still not available in Kashmir but will soon be once the administration approves of its running. For the convenience of the travelers and tourists, Innova and Tavera SUVs are available for hire that come with a driver at the price of rupees 2,000 or 2,200 rupees. These cabs and taxi services will take you to all the top places to see in Kashmir. One thing that you should remember is that the cab you book in Srinagar, will not be allowed to enter Pahalgam. You will need to look for a local cab in Pahalgam to continue with the sightseeing. This is an initiative taken up by the government to not only create employment opportunities for the locals in Pahalgam but also to preserve the natural beauty here.

After you checkin, rest till evening. In the evening, proceed towards Dal Lake for an amazing sunset boat ride. The ride typically lasts for 1 - 1.5 hours and shall cost you about INR 500 - 800 per person. Make sure that you bargain. During the ride, you will come across people in boats selling snacks, kahwa (traditional Kashmiri tea), artifacts, etc. You will also pass by the floating market. The prices here can be a tad bit more expensive compared to land costs.

Post the boat ride, you can have dinner and call it a day.

On day 2, finish your breakfast early and proceed towards Pahalgam. You can hire a cab for this. The journey from Srinagar to Pahalgam should take about 2 - 3 hours. En route, you will pass by saffron fields, apple orchards and cricket bat factory. You may also purchase dry fruits and saffron from any of the shops on the way.

On arrival at Pahalgam, check into your hotel. The following are our recommendations:

Post lunch, proceed towards Pahalgam taxi stand. You can hire a pony here to visit places such as mini Switzerland, Kashmir valley, Pahalgam valley, etc. The cost of pony will depend upon the places that you want to visit and should range from INR 4000 - 5000 per person. Again, make sure to bargain. This should take about 4 - 5 hours to complete.

P.S. Even though this experience is slightly expensive, we strongly recommend it. The views are to die for, and movies such as Bajrangi Bhaijan were shot in these places.

Post this trip, return to your hotel for dinner and call it a day.

Pahalgam and return to Srinagar

Post breakfast, proceed to Pahalgam taxi stand. Please note that the cabs you hired from Srinagar are not allowed here, and you need to hire local union cabs from the taxi stand to visit Aru Valley, Betab Valley, and Chandanwari. During winter months, you may hire a sled in these valleys since walking can be a bit taxing in the cold weather. Gumboots will be available for rent in front of the entrance of these places. You can spend 1 - 1.5 hours in each of these places.

Once you cover these places, you can return to Srinagar. En-route, visit Avantipur ruins.

Please note that during winter months, depending on road conditions, your vehicle may not be allowed in Gulmarg and you may have to hire a local union cab. Here also, on the top, you may hire a sled during the winter months. You can also rent jackets, gumboots, etc. here. The main attraction in Gulmarg is the Gondola ride. The queue for getting the tickets can sometimes be very long, so plan on reaching Gulmarg early. It is also possible to book these tickets online. Gondola has two phases. The ticket price will depend upon the phase that you want to visit.

You can also try out activities such as skiing and snowboarding here. You may spend 4 - 5 hours here, depending upon the crowd and number of activities that you want to do.

Post this, definitely visit Drung waterfall, especially if you are visiting during the winter months. The frozen waterfall is one of the best natural sights that you will see in your life!

Return to Srinagar in the evening.

Departure from Srinagar

Check out from your hotel post breakfast and proceed towards with lots of memories to be cherished for a lifetime!

1. The land cost in Kashmir is expensive compared to other destinations (for hiring pony, local cabs, renting winter wear, etc.). Make sure that you bargain for a fair price and also carry sufficient amount of cash with you. While ATMs are available in Srinagar, they are sparsely available in other locations and online payment is not always an option.

2. If you are traveling during winter, make sure to carry sufficient amount of winter wear such as thermals, jackets, sweaters, etc. While gumboots are available for rent in places with heavy snow, you must carry woollen socks and a good pair of shoes.

3. Make sure to carry your essential medicines with you since medical shops may not be accessible everywhere.

4. While aerial shots of Kashmir are beautiful, make sure that you ask around for local regulations related to flying a drone.

5. Please leave for airport early on your departure day since there is security checking before entering the airport. Please make sure to factor in atleast 30 - 45 minutes for this, based on the crowd at the airport.

How To Reach Kashmir

How to reach kashmir by air.

Reaching Kashmir by air is quite popular. The Srinagar airport is an international airport, but it mainly serves domestic flights from a number of cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Bangalore, Mumbai etc. An important thing to remember is that Srinagar Airport has strict security measures. To reach it, you have to travel beyond a 1.2km security barrier. Although the airport is not too far from the city, it’s a good idea to come here before time as there are many long queues for luggage and body screening that must be completed. Airlines such as IndiGo, Spicejet, Go Air and Air India fly to Srinagar regularly.

There are prepaid taxis that take you to the airport from the city. Another possibility to get to the city from the airport would be to take the free shuttle bus to the security gate outside and from there, you can try and get an auto. Curfews are common in Srinagar so reaching the airport on time can be a struggle. Also, even if you do manage to reach early, you might have to wait outside as you can go inside only three hours before the flight departure. During winter months, it’s common for flights to get cancelled routinely.

Kashmir has two other airports as well – Jammu Airport, a domestic airport that serves Jammu and is 8kms away from the city with bus, taxi and car rental options to reach the city and Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, another domestic airport that serves the city of Leh.

How to Reach Kashmir by Bus

Kashmir is connected to other cities and states by a network of state and private buses. From cities like Chandigarh and Delhi, there are bus services that take you to Srinagar. Srinagar is connected to Jammu via the National Highway 1-A. State road transport corporation buses from various states have private deluxe buses which travel to Kashmir. In Srinagar, there is a J&K SRTC bus station where you can board your bus. Buses often arrive early in the morning or late at night and if you are planning to arrive by bus, then do remember this before you finalize your travel plans. Sometimes, the buses are not very comfortable, and your journey might feel too cumbersome. Especially if you are coming from Delhi, the bus journey can go up to 24 hours! However, the buses are quite cost-effective which makes them popular. There are government buses as well which take you to Srinagar. Once you reach Srinagar, You can find the best places to visit in Kashmir such as Jammu, Pahalgam, Gulmarg as there are buses from Srinagar that take you there.

How to Reach Kashmir by Train

Travelling to Kashmir by train means you have to take a train to Jammu Tawi Railway Station in Jammu which is the only railway station in Kashmir. Although Srinagar too has a railway station at Nowgam which is around 10kms away from the city, it covers just a few cities such as Baramulla, Anantnag, Qazigund and Banihal. It is not yet linked to the Indian Railway network. To reach Kashmir from other cities, Jammu Tawi is better as it is well-connected to numerous Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Kanpur, Udaipur, and Pune. Numerous trains come here regularly and some of them include Delhi Anand Vihar-Katra Special Express, Lucknow-Katra Special Express, Pune-Jammu Tawi Jhelum Express and several others. After you reach Jammu, you can take a bus or hire a taxi to reach Srinagar if you so wish. However, this is not a good idea as it can take nearly 8 to 10 hours to reach Srinagar from Jammu by road.

How to Reach Kashmir by Car

You can take a taxi or a rental car to Kashmir, typically to Srinagar. The roads are well-connected to both Jammu and Srinagar. You can choose from taxis or jeeps to travel to Kashmir. It is often recommended to book a taxi for multiple days as it turns out to be more economical in the long run. Do note that travelling from Srinagar to Jammu takes nearly ten hours. However, old hands at travelling in Kashmir often advise that it’s a good idea to keep a margin of 5 hours at least as there can be traffic on the highways which might affect your travel time. Bad weather can also affect travel time and cause delays and traffic jams.

Transportation in kashmir

How to commute within kashmir.

By Bus If you are in Srinagar, then there are buses run by JKSRTC and other private organisations which you can use to get around the city. Buses come at regular intervals and the tickets don’t cost much, so this is a good idea. Jammu too has local buses, but these are crowded and it’s not very clear where they are headed, so you need to ask locals about the buses. These are not very good options for tourists as locals are more used to them.

By Auto There are autos in Srinagar which can be used for short distances. However, do be warned that they don’t run on meters and rates are not fixed. Sometimes, you can hire autos per hour, and they will take you around the city on short tours. Jammu too has autorickshaws which follow the same principle. No meters but a fixed rate that has to be decided before the passenger gets inside the auto ideally. It’s also a good idea to negotiate the amount before the ride begins.

By Taxi/Cab In Srinagar, it’s possible to get taxis. They are not very frequent, however. You can also choose to get a rental from a travel agency where they rent out cars. There are several such places from where you can hire cars and explore Srinagar easily. In Jammu, there’s the Special Tourist Taxi Association which offers taxis for hire. It’s also possible to take a 2 -3-hour tour to go around some of the famous tourist places here.

By Minibuses Both Srinagar and Jammu have minibuses which can be used to get around the city. In Srinagar, there is a minibus stand in Lal Chowk. From here, you can visit various places such as Hazratbal , Shalimar Bagh, Dal Lake and other such tourist spots. Jammu also has minibuses which cover various places and suburbs. Routes are fixed, so ask before you get on one. Also, minibuses are often crowded and can be bothersome for those who are not used to travelling in such vehicles.

By Shikhara The sight of the colourful shikharas as they glide over the Dal Lake is something that’s hard to forget. While not really a mode of transport, tourists can hire shikharas for an hour. The boatmen will take you around the lake for just Rs.500. They will also provide you with entertaining titbits about film shoots that have taken place here for no extra charge! The Dal Lake also has several gorgeous houseboats and you’ll also get to see Kashmiri people from close quarters as they row the shikharas, selling you all manner of things, from kahwa to trinkets.

By Walking Walking is a popular way to get around Srinagar. Most of the tourist places in the old city can be approached on foot. There are a few restaurants and shops here as well. If you don’t mind walking, then you can see some beautiful and interesting sights. Many people also opt to go on trekking expeditions from Srinagar. There are amazing Kashmir Tour Packages to choose from, here at Thomas Cook.

5 days budget trip to Kashmir (Srinagar and Gulmarg)

Photo of Whereyougo_thereyouare

Like all other sectors travel and tourism was hit hard since early 2020. The lockdown followed by increasing cases of COVID left people in panic and opting out of any travel – official or personal. But the fact is, this aided to lot of budget options in line for people who are willing to travel. The reason was obvious ‘something is better than nothing’. I am particularly talking about the places and people who do not have other source of income like Kashmir where tourism is everything for locals.

Travel during COVID? Why do you want to take the risk? – is the common question that comes when talking of a travel plan. But honestly, is it worth waiting for the perfect time to travel? I think no!

It was late 2020 when I decided on not waiting for the right time and dust my backpack to bring it back to life. Every season has beautiful shades that makes any place beautiful. We have heard much about the summer in Kashmir with orchards in full bloom, Juicy peaches, walnuts and red apples being harvested and the majestic Chinar trees that provides shade to name a few. The winter in Kashmir is no competition, the snow-clad mountains and snow carpets all around you, literally makes you believe you are between the clouds. KASHMIR, is the most beautiful and breath-taking place I have seen. No arguments on why it is called ‘Jannat-E-Benazir’ - the Paradise on Earth.

I wont say its easy to travel around in Kashmir. Unlike other tourist places in India, Kashmir has some restrictions and high alert zones. I will be mentioning those towards the end of the itinerary.

Day 1 : Bangalore - Srinagar

The place has more than food and scenery to offer. I met some of the most welcoming, warm and friendly people in Kashmir.

We started our journey on 28th December 2020 from Bangalore. The fastest and easiest way to reach Kashmir is to take a flight. Average charges for a Bangalore-Srinagar flight is 6000-7000 Rupees (usually connecting flight through Delhi).

Hotel Milad

Being on budget we opted for a hotel close to the tourist attractions yet reasonably priced.

It is always better to make reservations and pre-book day tours if it is your first time in Kashmir as there are multiple things one need to be aware of like the night curfew. In fact we were surprised to see all the shops shut before 7:00 PM.

Day 2 : Srinagar

Destination 1 - Shankaracharya Temple

It is situated on top of the Shankaracharya Hill on the Zabarwan Range. The temple is at a height of 1,000 feet and has around 250 steps to reach the shrine. The entrance to the hill is guarded by Army and vehicles are not allowed after a point. Photography is not permitted inside the temple and it is advised to leave mobile phones and cameras in the vehicle.

As we reached the foothill it started snowing making the path even more beautiful. The View from the hill top is splendid, it renders panoramic views of the entire city and the famous Dal Lake.

En-Route to Shankaracharya Temple

Photo of Srinagar by Whereyougo_thereyouare

Destination 2 : Dal Lake

To return from Dal Lake without embarking on Shikara ride will be unjustness to yourself. It is the right blend of nature and adventure as it will truly take you to a different space where people depend of the lake for their livelihood. The ride in it self if unique. 3 hour ride can cost you anything between 3000 to 4000 and don't forget to enjoy some pakodas and Kahwa Chai from the floating cafes and to tip the guides who paddle the boat.

Photo of 5 days budget trip to Kashmir (Srinagar and Gulmarg) by Whereyougo_thereyouare

Destination 3 and 4: Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh (Gardens)

All gardens in this line are laid out by Mughals in the 16th century. If you are short of time, choose one of the gardens as the others offer almost similar scenery.

Photo of 5 days budget trip to Kashmir (Srinagar and Gulmarg) by Whereyougo_thereyouare

Destination 5: Zero Bridge

Well this was not part of the plan, but we decided to explore this bridge as it was walk able from our hotel. The Zero Bridge is an old wooden arch bridge on Jhelum River which was opened in 1950. It is perfect for an evening stroll.

Photo of 5 days budget trip to Kashmir (Srinagar and Gulmarg) by Whereyougo_thereyouare

Day 3: Srinagar - Tangmarg - Gulmarg

We started our journey after breakfast with the pre-booked cab service provider. For backpackers and budget travelers it will be convenient to take a bus to Tangmarg market, from where mini coaches and jeeps frequently shuttle between Tangmarg and Gulmarg. If there is heavy snowfall, people who take cars cannot go to Gulmarg as there are chances of accidents, however they can park their vehicles in Tangmarg and take the jeep service which will cost an average of 3000 to and back. Also buy shades and rent boots (jackets are optional) from Tangmarg as Gulmarg is usually very cold in the night.

In our case I would say it was a good decision that we choose private cab as the Srinagar highway was closed due to an attack which made us take a different route to reach Gulmarg. The journey which typically takes around 2 hours took us more than 4 hours. We generally do not understand the heat of tension due to attacks when we hear about these sitting in different part of the country. The journey however, changed the definition of touristy Kashmir for us. we saw the villages, kids grazing cattle's, small industries and tea stalls.

Photo of Gulmarg by Whereyougo_thereyouare

Day 4: Gulmarg

Gulmarg needs no introduction. It is a known skiing destination and hence is most prefered by adventure junkies during winter. Try and get a guide before you reach Gulmarg as there will be many locals waiting to escort you and charge hefty fees. We arranged for a guide for two whole days and the fees was 1000 rupees.

Hotel Alpine Ridge

The accommodation we chose was a reasonable place with decent service. It is always advised to book the hotels inclusive of breakfast so that you don't miss or delay first meal of the day. After a wholesome buffet breakfast we went to Gondola stage 1. the ticket charges are 700 per head. There are different types of show activities at Gulmarg like snow bikes, Skiing, Snowboarding, etc.

Gondola ride and snow activities

Photo of Hotel Alpine Ridge, Gulmarg by Whereyougo_thereyouare

We had some hot daal and rice for lunch.... light food kept us on the go throughout the trip.

Photo of 5 days budget trip to Kashmir (Srinagar and Gulmarg) by Whereyougo_thereyouare

During our stay, the weather dropped to -15 degree during the night. the hotel provides, hotwater, electric blankets and room heaters.

Day 5: Gulmarg - Srinagar - Delhi - Bangalore

Challenges: Check for any curfews, avoid spacial days to travel and be aware that only post paid mobile networks work in Kashmir.

cheapest way to travel to kashmir

Quick Information

Ideal duration, not required, starting from, http://jktourism.jk.gov.in/.

One of the major draws of coming to Jammu and Kashmir is the time spent on the road itself. High-altitude crossings like Zojila and Khardungla beckon adventurers from all corners of India. On the other hand, a flight to Leh or Srinagar allows spectacular panoramic views of the higher Himalayas. The state of Jammu and Kashmir is accessible by road, rail, and air. Travellers can easily book flights, trains, taxis, or buses to reach the northernmost state in India. The state has three major regions: Jammu, Kashmir Valley, and Ladakh .

Each region has at least one principal city where major modes of interstate transport are available for domestic and international visitors. So, if you are planning a holiday to the land of high passes and surreal beauty, here are the following means of transport to reach Jammu and Kashmir :

New Delhi to Kashmir

Mumbai to kashmir, kolkata to kashmir, bangalore to kashmir, pune to kashmir, maharashtra to kashmir.

Srinagar International Airport (SXR), also known as Sheikh-ul-Alam Airport, and Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) in Leh are the major airports in Jammu and Kashmir state. The airport in Srinagar is connected with major cities in India including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bangalore. The airport in Leh has direct flights to and from Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar. Taxi rentals and private shuttles are available at both airports in Jammu and Kashmir.

Furthermore, Jammu Aiport or Jammu Civil Enclave handles domestic flights from major urban centres in India.

Jammu Tawi, located in the state’s winter capital, is the busiest railway station in Jammu and Kashmir. It serves as the northern terminal of major trains connecting the city with the rest of India. Regular express trains from Jammu to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Trivandrum run efficiently.

The picturesque section between Banihal and Baramulla of Jammu–Baramulla railway line passes through several towns in Kashmir Valley. It is an excellent alternative for those wanting to take the tracks not often taken.

Jammu and Srinagar, seasonal capitals of the state can be reached throughout the year by road. Jammu is served by a network of state and national highways. If you’re wondering about how to reach Kashmir Valley by road, follow the NH1(A) that passes through the city of Jammu to Srinagar in Kashmir Valley. The highway continues to the east before terminating at Leh in Ladakh region. NH1 is a major and vital highway which handles the primary traffic coming in and out of the region. Government and private operators run buses and taxis between Jammu, Srinagar, and Leh.

The Jawahar Tunnel, 2.8 kilometres in length, connects Jammu with Kashmir Valley. The 3,528-m-high mountain pass Zoji La carries the Srinagar-Leh highway extending into Ladakh. The 474-km-long Leh-Manali Highway is another major road with serving the Ladakh region. Both Srinagar-Leh and Leh-Manali highways remain vulnerable to weather conditions in winter as the snowfall blocks the road access.
