Disposable or Reusable

You have to decide if you want a disposable or reusable box. For shorter car trips on occasion, disposable is fine.

You need to spring for reusable if you’re flying because a disposable box can create a mess and does not fold up. And consider a reusable box if you take long road trips with Fluffy and want something handy to go with the cat carrier in the car .

A travel cat litter box setup in a car works pretty much the same way. The difference is that you have more freedom about where you set up your box.

You may want to just set up the box in your trunk or back compartment. Or bring your cat into a restroom. I advocate getting a cat carrier that comes with its own litter box , or one that is large enough to fit a portable tray.

I caution against setting a portable litter box outside in a parking lot or rest area because your cat could get spooked enough to run.

As Dr. Ruth MacPete (DVM) points out , your cat may bolt from the car at the first opportunity because they assume that you are taking them to the vet because they associate car rides with vet trips!

Don’t risk turning a rest stop into a tragedy by letting your cat out of the car to use the litter box.

“Once your cat is out of the carrier and wandering in the car, do not open or shut the car doors unless your cat is wearing a harness (not collar) and leash,” the vets at All Feline Hospital advise.

“If your cat were to suddenly dart out of the car, it is much easier to step on a trailing leash that to try and grab a scared freaked out cat.” I agree!

Don’t Leave the Litter Box Out in the Car

Some of you may think to leave the box out on the floor of your car because you want to “free range” your cat during a long drive.

This is a big negative. Letting a cat explore freely in your car during a trip can be a stressful, dangerous thing. She’ll start roaming at some point.

Being unsecured in your car can be very dangerous for a cat if you need to brake quickly. Your cat can even startle you by hopping in your lap to turn you into a distracted driver at a very precarious moment.

It’s important to place your cat in carrying case that secures to the seat using the seat buckle. This case should be the appropriate size for your cat with proper ventilation.

Let’s talk about being hygienic and courteous when traveling with a cat on a plane. It’s a lot like traveling with a child! Your cat is going to need potty breaks.

The good news is that it’s normal for your cat to eat and drink less frequently while traveling simply because the situation is a little stressful.

You don’t need to worry as long as kitty’s appetite bounces right back once you’re settled at your destination.

How to Set Up a Litter Box on a Plane

Bring your cat to the airplane’s restroom in regular intervals. Base this on your cat’s typical behaviors and usual times. Be more frequent just in case.

Set up the portable box on the floor of the restroom. You can even bring along a towel or sheet that you place down under the box.

• Flush solids
• Wash, dry, refold the litter tray

Never leave litter scattered on the floor. Pouring litter down a drain is also a big NO, as it could clog up drains!

Some people set up their own DIY travel litter boxes using things like cardboard boxes or plastic containers from the hardware store.

Personally, I’m on the team of buying a real portable litter box that’s ergonomic and convenient. Cardboard can leak, and you’ll likely dispose of a plastic bin used as a litter box.

• Generally, a journey of eight hours or less might be ok in terms of not needing a litter box (more on that below). That said, some cats do need to go more often than others.
• It’s a good idea to restrict your cat’s eating before a journey. About four hours prior should be the last time it feeds.
• Make sure the litter box is secure, or stable, within the car. Chances are you won’t want to “walk” your cat on stop breaks. You don’t want litter spilling all over the car, either.

You can secure a travel litter box into a cat carrier, cover it and secure it in another section of your car, or fold it down while empty and store it in an easy-to-access place in the car for your next stop. 

3. Bring extra litter, bags, and a scoop .

Be sure to bring everything you’ll need for your cat’s trip including extra litter for the travel litter box, plastic bags to clean it out with (we use recycled grocery store bags), and a scoop that can be kept in an easily cleaned space during the trip.

Whether your cat’s litter box is in their carrier or you plan on letting them use it when you stop driving, you’ll want to have everything you’ll need to keep it clean and securely stored during the trip. That being said, you may even want to bring emergency cleaning supplies for the car just in case.

Methodology

While I was researching the best cat carriers with litter boxes, I did the same things I would do before making a purchase for my own cats. I read customer reviews, I looked at the manufacturer, retailer, and price of the cat carrier, and above all, I considered the comfort and safety of the cat and the driver.

Here are the main factors I considered while choosing the best cat carriers with litter box sets:

• Size . Each of the cat carriers on this list is at least 15″ x 11.4″ x 17.7″ to ensure enough room for cats to be comfortable.
• Travel Litter Box. Each of the cat carriers on this list either comes with a travel litter box that fits inside the carrier, comes with a travel litter box that collapses for portability, or is large enough to fit a travel litter box along with your cat.
• Safety.  Each of the cat carriers on this list is made from durable materials with proper ventilation. I also considered additional safety features including secure fasteners, included leashes, space to attach a leash, seatbelt loops, and any other car-specific features for travel.
• Comfort.  In addition to proper size and ventilation, I also looked to see if the cat carriers included interior mats for your cat’s comfort. For the driver, I considered the space available in the car and easy visibility so that you can check on your cat throughout the trip.
• Customer Satisfaction.  Before I make any purchase, I always take the time to read customer reviews and consider the overall product rating. For each cat carrier litter box combo on this list, I checked to make sure that customer reviews are overall positive and that each one had an average rating of at least 4/5 stars. That helped me to understand how accurate the cat carrier description was as well as the reliability of the seller.

Final Thoughts

There are hundreds of cat carriers and travel litter boxes available now, and finding the best one can be time-consuming and expensive. However, it’s important to make sure you’re getting what you and your cat need for any travel.

Disposable Litter Boxes: Making Travelling & Moves with Cats a Touch Easier

I’ve done a lot of moving around with my first cat, Avery, over the years. So much that tips on moving with cats was one of the first pet care articles I thought to publish when I started this blog.

The moves included a lot of car travelling, but also included two plane rides – first from Canada to the UK , then from the UK to Portugal , both times because my husband Thomas and I were making permanent moves and could never imagine leaving our baby behind in the care of family members or friends.

In terms of disposable litter boxes – the way I see it, absolutely anything that can make your life easier, less stressful, and more convenient during times like these: pretty much a godsend. It doesn’t matter how long you travel or how far the trip, it’s important to help reduce your anxiety because it will help your cat stay a lot calmer in turn. I do feel like our pets can feel our stress. Moving and travelling is stressful enough for our kitties, so any way we can reduce anxiety we have and they have is absolutely worthwhile and incredibly helpful.

When it comes to disposable litter boxes – I’m going to admit – I’ve never once used them. I don’t even think I realized they were options back when I was moving the first few times, certainly not until I’d done my first flight to the UK.

When we did that flight with Avery, we only had the PetMate Sky Kennel , which we lined with three blankets (the greatest idea for comfort and to help keep Avery calm with his own happiness pheromones, but now thinking back, would’ve been pretty terrible if he’d gone #1  or #2 during the flight).

The second trip, we took Avery in his Sherpa Original Deluxe Carrier , and lined it with AmazonBasics Pee Pads – super useful since he did end up peeing, though they were so good at absorbing smells we didn’t even know he’d gone until we arrived at home and took him out of his carrier. There were still lessons to be learned there, as I stacked two pee pads on top of each other (thinking if Avery went, I could take off the first one and leave the second). The pads are so stinkin’ slippery, I should’ve pinned them down so they didn’t move around so much and potentially make Avery uncomfortable.

In the UK, we had Thomas’ grandmother buy us some litter and a litter box before we arrived, but moving to Portugal, where we knew no one, we intended to use our portable travel litter box (a small folding one in the style of the Petpeppy.com Portable Cat Litter Carrier ) when we arrived. I like to have Avery use travel litter boxes a while before we need them to make sure Avery’s used to the switch, and while doing so, I had the idea of using one of the extra liners refills from my Modkat Litter Box ( reviewed here ) as a replacement for the travel litter box I had.

The only reason I hoped it worked out: Avery is massive digger when he uses his litter box and so I’d end up with heaps of litter outside every time he went with the fold-able box. The Modkat liner worked perfectly to resolve this. It’s easy for him to walk into because it bends when he walks over it, and it contains his crazy digging, as well as most of the fallout when he walks out of it. Would absolutely 100% recommend buying a pack of the Modkat top entry litter box “A” liners to re-appropriate this way, as in my opinion, they make for much better travel litter boxes than any made-as-such portable litter box out there.

They’re durable, and actually make for excellent temporary litter boxes as well, which I can also personally vouch for since I’ve had two up as makeshift litter boxes for the past couple of months since, unplanned, Thomas and I ended up taking a second, stray/feral neighbourhood cat in , and I didn’t want to jump into buying new litter boxes right away. They’re also super lightweight, easy to clean and fold, and are ridiculously cheap. While I’d absolutely do a hard pass on all other travel and/or disposable litter boxes now that I’ve fallen in love with them, considering their low cost and compact size, even if you’d like to try something else, there’s no harm in grabbing one as a backup.

Okay, enough about using the Modkat’s liners as litter boxes. Time to get into disposable cat litter boxes that are great options if you’re travelling, or as a temporary fix if you’re in the middle of a move or something along those lines, because disposable litter boxes still can come in quite handy. Here’s what I’ve found:

Disposable Cat Litter Boxes: From Pans & Trays to Covered with Litter Included

1. nature’s miracle waterproof disposable litter box for all litter types.

These are probably the most popular disposable litter boxes around, likely in large part due to how ridiculously affordable they are. They’re waterproof trays, and are supposedly really great disposable litter boxes albeit their low price point. Since I have no firsthand experience with them, and I’ve managed to find a great review, if you’d like to read a firsthand review of these, check out this excellent one by an Amazon reviewer here .

2. Kitty’s WonderBox Biodegradeable, Recycled Paper Disposable Litter Box

Second place goes to Kitty’s WoderBox disposable litter tray, but these look to be almost if not just as good as the Nature’s Miracle disposable boxes. One reviewer mentioned : “These are disposable. Scoop them daily and you can make the tray last a month. Easy to replace, no mess. I use these trays inside of a large, plastic, covered cat box as my cat likes to kick litter everywhere. As these come in a pack of three, you can easily make them last three months with regularly scooping.” Should be absolutely perfect, even in cases where you’re travelling for quite a while or need a temporary box for a reasonably lengthy period of time.

3. Cat’s Pride KatKit Disposable Trays, Includes Litter

Really prefer to have a disposable tray in your storage room that already includes litter in one easy-to-pull out package? Cat’s Pride KatKit litter boxes are probably the most popular option in this department. They are supposed to be a little thin, so my guess is that cats who are aggressive in the litter box (like my Avery!) would tear them to shreds, while they’d be flawless for cats who are sane in the kitty loo (like my Bjorn). One reviewer mentioned how perfect these are for road trips , and I have to say, they likely are the best bet for that type of travel considering you don’t have to lug around a litter bag to fill them up before use.

4. Argee Kitty Lounge Disposable Plastic Litter Tray

Want to use your own litter, but love to have a plastic material that’s lightweight, easy to stack, easy to dispose of, and just plain convenient all ’round? These Argee Kitty Lounge plastic disposable litter trays are an excellent bet, especially considering all the glowing reviews they have.

5. Hongwei Kitty Kan Traveler Quality Enclosed Disposable Litter Box with Scoop

If your cat is like my Avery, and really is quite an aggressive digger when it comes to using the litter box, you’re likely going to want to opt for a disposable litter box that’s also enclosed/covered the same way your regular litter box likely is at home. This particular one looks  quite sturdy in reviewer pictures and based on what quite a lot of reviewers have to say, they are actually pretty darn sturdy, even if you set them up and take them down quite often . Would absolutely look into this one if you’ve got a litter fiend like I have.

6. LitterMaid Odor Control Disposable Litter Boxes

LitterMaid’s Odor Control disposable litter pans are comparable to the ones by Nature’s Miracle and Kitty’s Wonderbox. I do think they’re well liked, especially at keeping odours to a minimal, but be aware, one reviewer mentioned their height is not as high as advertised, so if you were looking for a very deep, tall tray, you may not get what you were after with this one.

7. PetSafe Disposable Cat Litter Box, Collapsible Covered Design for Travel

Love the idea of a covered litter box that’s disposable, but rather it come with litter? Try the PetSafe Disposable cat litter box, which comes with crystal litter. Seems like this litter box, due to being collapsible, is incredibly easy to open and close. This feature could come in incredibly handy as well!

8. Cats Desire Disposable Litter Boxes Disposable Litter Boxes

Not one of the most popular litter boxes around, but in my opinion, it looks like a solid option regardless. This one can be used as an open litter pan or a covered litter box, and if I’m correct, you get 10 pieces with the pack which can either be used as a top or bottom portion. So if your cat only destroys the bottom portion, you can keep replacing only that portion, and if you want to use all 10 pieces as litter pans, you can absolutely do that. Really love this idea.

9. Ace Innovations Ten Second Litter Boxes (10 Litter Boxes- 10 Week Supply)

Another solid option that’s pop up or collapsible, but this time only comes in the shape of a high side litter pan. These look great as well, solid looking and come with handles. Definitely viable if your cat isn’t crazy in the loo like Avery.

10. Litter One Kit Biodegradable Cat Litter Solution

The Litter One Kit is a biodegradable disposable litter box that also comes with biodegradable litter made of pine pellets. While it’s not got a covered hood, it does appear to be quite a high litter tray style disposable box, which is handy in cases where you have an aggressive-in-the-loo cat who also really dislikes covered boxes sometimes. Don’t want accidents because kitty hates their travel litter box!

10 RV Cat Litter Box Storage Ideas (That Don’t Stink)

Bringing your feline family members along on your travels is one of the best parts of RV living. However, finding a place to store your RV cat’s litter box is challenging in a tiny space. Here are the ten best places to hide a litter box in an RV.

Litter Box Cabinet

Buying a litter box cabinet is one of the easiest ways to keep a litter box out of sight in an RV. We removed our dinette table, and put this white litter cabinet as well as pet food bowls and a scratching post in the empty slide out space.

In most RVs you will need to remove a table or chairs in order to have enough room to accommodate the litter box cabinet. However, giving up the seating space is worth it to avoid look at a litter box all day.

Under the RV’s Bathroom Sink

For an easy solution that does not require carpentry skills, replace the doors on the bathroom vanity with a curtain to create a private potty for your RV cat.

If you prefer to keep the doors, you can cut a hole in the cabinet door and install a pre-made kitty door .

In the RV Shower

In a small travel trailers and motorhomes, the shower can be the best place to hide an RV cat litter box.

Of course, the box will have to be removed when you use the shower and any stray litter will need to be swept so it does not end up in your grey water tank.

Tunnel to the RV Storage Bay

You can also install a kitty door in any wall that leads directly into the RV storage bay.

If you are willing to give up the storage space, this is a great solution to keep odors out of your living space.

In the Outdoor Kitchen

RV owner Kylie Ann turned her outdoor kitchen into an outdoor bathroom. She cut a hole in the wall and installed a door, so her cat can easily access the litter box from inside the RV.

The litter box can be moved inside temporarily if you need to use the outdoor kitchen. Or the outdoor kitchen can be repurposed as a place to store pet supplies and outdoor gear.

Washer Dryer Closet

If you are lucky enough to have a washer dryer hook-up in your RV, you can use that space for a litter box instead. You’ll have to go to the laundromat, but the space will provide ample privacy for your cat.

Simply cut a hole or install a kitty door to allow access to the litter box. This solution will also work with any wardrobe closet in larger RVs.

Under Fifth Wheel Stairs

In most fifth wheel RVs, the stairs in the middle of the trailer sit directly above the basement storage bay. Therefore, it is possible to cut a hole in the stairs to allow cats to access a litter box in the storage bay.

It is best to build walls (see picture) to keep your cat from playing with wires and other potentially hazardous items in the basement area.

Under the Bed

Many RV beds lift up to reveal a storage area under the mattress platform. This under the bed storage area, has plenty of space for an RV cat litter box and all of your pet supplies.

Of course, it isn’t feasible to leave the storage open (you wouldn’t be able to use the bed), so you will need to cut a hole or install a cat door for access.

Litter Box and Cat Tree in One

If you cat is used to having a cat tree to climb, consider a cat tree with a litter box compartment for the base . This setup will take up a significant amount of floorspace in your RV, but it will take up less room than having a separate cat tree and litter box.

If you have a large RV, you could place the tree in the bunk room. In smaller RVs, you can make space for the cat tree by removing the dinette or dining table.

Corner Litter Box

If your RV is really small, you can place a triangle-shaped litter box in any corner of your RV. Select the least used corner and buy a box with a lid to minimize unpleasant sights and odors.

Unless you teach your cat how to use the toilet, you’re guaranteed to have at least one litter box in your house. Some cat owners have the space to place the litter box in a little used area of the house where guests don’t have to stare at a cat toilet during game night. However, you may not have that option if you live in a small space. Thankfully, if you’re handy and have access to tools, you can craft your own litter box enclosure to keep your cat’s business out of sight (and maybe smell). Here are 16 DIY litter box enclosures you can build today.

The 16 DIY Litter Box Enclosures

1. diy litter box cabinet by domestically creative.

This detailed plan transforms a thrift-store cabinet into an upcycled litter box enclosure. Although the project is not overly complicated, it is time-consuming and requires more specialized tools, such as a miter saw. The directions are clear and easy to follow, with the author including some mistakes she made while creating her project so that others can avoid them. This litter box enclosure can be painted to match any room décor and provides space on top to store items. The hardest part of this project might be the patience it takes to find just the right cabinet from a thrift store!

2. DIY Basket Litter Box Enclosure by All the Little Details

This easy litter box enclosure project requires minimal time, effort, and materials. The instructions are well-written and illustrated with photographs. Although the author made her enclosure using an IKEA wicker storage chest, it could technically be accomplished utilizing any basket with a lid that’s large enough for a litter box. You could also use the top of the basket to store soft goods and further disguise the litter box. Although it’s easy to make, this may not be the cheapest DIY litter box enclosure, depending on where you purchase the basket.

3. Cat Face DIY Litter Box Cover by A Beautiful Mess

This cat-shaped litter box cover takes your enclosure from functional to adorable! While the directions are clear, this project requires experience with tools like a jigsaw and precise measuring and cutting. It’s best for a person with some previous DIY experience. The materials and tools list at the beginning of the directions isn’t complete because it doesn’t mention needing a drill or hammer (we put them on our list, though!) You can customize the size, roof, and paint color of this cover based on your preferences.

4. 3-Drawer DIY Litter Box Enclosure by Mer Issa Mom

This litter box enclosure might be the easiest option on our list, if not the most visually appealing. It’s also cost-effective if you purchase the three-drawer storage option from the store suggested by the creator. Once you have it, you’ll need to make two quick changes with a box cutter to produce the enclosure. We suggest not following the example of the video instructions and keeping your cat out of the drawers while cutting! This project will only work if your litter box is small enough to fit into the bottom drawer, but the plastic material provides some flexibility.

5. Flowerpot DIY Litter Box Enclosure by HomeTalk

This unique project isn’t so much a litter box enclosure as an actual DIY litter box. The directions are simple and easy to follow, but it requires a woodburning tool that not everyone can access. Otherwise, this project should be fast, uncomplicated, and relatively inexpensive. This may not work if your cat is on the larger side, depending on the flowerpot you can find. It is somewhat customizable in that you can pick the fake foliage you use and swap it out if you want. Unless you paint the flowerpot, you’ll also be limited by the colors you have available.

6. Patterned DIY Litter Box Cover by Sugar and Cloth

This partly open litter box enclosure is a good option if you’re trying to disguise a taller litter box. The creator designed it for a Litter Robot, but it will work for any covered litter box with some modifications. This project is good for inexperienced DIYers because it doesn’t require specialized tools, and the directions are easy to follow. You will need patience, attention to detail, and a steady hand as you create the pattern. The enclosure can be customized to match your home décor based on the stain and paint colors you choose. In theory, you could also modify the pattern if you feel extra creative.

7. Inexpensive DIY Litter Box Enclosure by Instructables

This litter box enclosure is perfect for those with no DIY experience and a limited budget. You might already have all the materials you need for this project at home, especially if you have an end table to repurpose. If not, buy the cheapest one you can find. This project should take less than an hour and doesn’t require any special skills or tools. Cut, measure, and attach, and you’re good to go! The catch is that you’ll be limited in the litter box you can use with this project by the size of the end table.

8. DIY Dresser Litter Box Enclosure by Reality Daydream

This project is a sturdier, higher-end version of the dresser litter box enclosure we discussed earlier. The creator upcycled a dresser they already had on hand, but if you don’t have one in your garage, expect to spend some time thrifting the perfect option. The only requirements are it has three drawers and be made of wood. Once you have the dresser, the project is fairly simple but requires power tools and basic DIY knowledge. You can customize the color of the dresser to match your décor. This enclosure opens easily for cleaning, which might be its best feature.

9. DIY Litter Box Enclosure and Seating by Pine and Poplar

This litterbox enclosure is sturdy enough to double as a seating bench if needed. These same plans can also be used to make a storage chest with slight modifications. This project requires you to build the enclosure entirely from scratch, with no upcycling in sight, so it’s best for those with some DIY experience. However, the directions are extremely detailed, including exact measurements for the plywood required, so it could be attempted successfully by an ambitious beginner as well. Customize the stain color for your house and add a cushion on top if you want this enclosure to serve as a bench too.

10. “Dog-proof” DIY Litter Box Enclosure by Instructables

Try this simple litter box enclosure if you also have a dog at home that enjoys raiding the box for “kitty treats.” The creator cautions that this enclosure isn’t truly dog-proof so much as dog-resistant. A strong and determined canine could probably still get inside. The enclosure is easy to make and requires only a few materials. However, you need a jigsaw to make it go more smoothly. If you’re looking for a litter box enclosure that’s more practical than stylish, this is the project for you.

This system is popular with squeamish cat owners who want to see as little poop as possible. The tray has a lid that you can clamp down when changing so you barely have to glimpse the gross stuff. It's useful for people with limited mobility who can't bend down to scoop a box every few days. It's also a more affordable self-cleaning box for pet owners who travel a few nights at a time and want to ensure their kitty's box stays clean. Plenty of people also praise the lightweight crystal litter as a nice break from 14-pound boxes of heavy clumping litter.

That said, there were a few issues with this product in our tester households — for the people, not the cats. The ScoopFree only comes with one disposable litter tray, and buying a new one each month starts to get costly. When we tested it in two-cat households, the tray had to be swapped out more often, sometimes every 10 days, so it can be a costly system if you have multiple cats.

Also, we (and many online reviewers) had trouble with the crystals not hiding odors. It's less of a problem with solid waste, which gets raked into the bin, but it can be an issue if your cat pees a lot, since the moisture gets absorbed but not contained. Still, others say they never smell this litter box, so for some, it provides odor-free relief. The noise from the mechanical rake was minimal for our testers. PetSafe marks this as best for cats under 15 pounds, so it's not suitable for larger felines. It's also not for kittens under 6 months.

We're adding this one in, as it works virtually the same as the Litter-Robot for a little less money. What's the same: It works with clumping cat litter and has a globe that rotates to drop waste into a bin at the bottom. The brand recommends small-particle clumping cat litter. ( Tidy Cat Lightweight could be one to try.) What's improved: It's a couple of inches smaller than the giant Litter-Robot and $100 cheaper, which is not insignificant. But the entryway is much smaller, which will work for some cats who crave privacy but could be an issue if you have a very large cat.

Leo's Loo uses odor-controlling filters and a UV sanitizing light meant to reduce odors and bacteria. We are still testing this in homes to determine how we feel about both of those features. Meanwhile, some online reviewers say that the filters and UV lights help but don't completely knock out all smells with some cats. You can buy the lavender-scented drawer liners to further fight odors and to make the once-weekly emptying of the bin nice and easy.

There's an app for Leo's Loo that you can use on iOS or Android. It can also be connected to Alexa or Google — for instance, you can ask Alexa to run a cleaning cycle before guests come over. The cleaning function is very quiet. Sensors will keep the box from rotating if your cat is too close. This one will wait for your cat to move away before the cleaning cycle runs, rather than Litter-Robot which waits a set amount of time.

It's 18.3" x 19.7" whereas a standard size is more like 19" x 15". Leave the swinging door in place for privacy and odor control or remove it if your cat prefers. You will be back to scooping this litter box though; it's not self-cleaning.

How we test self-cleaning litter boxes

We've tested 10 self-cleaning litter boxes over the past six years, both in our Lab and at home in multi-cat households. To mimic pet waste in the Lab, we poured water onto litter and used a small weight to simulate a cat entering and leaving the litter box to trigger the mechanism. But we get our best feedback after a model has been used in a tester's home (pictured). Consumers tell us how their cat or cats responded to the litter box, and, of course, how well each litter box cleans up real waste.

What to look for when shopping for a self-cleaning litter box

If you're ready to move from an old-fashioned litter box to one that employs automatic scooping technology, consider:

✔️ Size: Take into account the size of the box (footprint, height and entrance opening) and the size of your cat. A larger cat needs a larger box so it can easily turn around, and some self-cleaning litter boxes have weight restrictions with their sensors that make them not work with either too-big cats or too-small kittens. Also, measure your space to be sure that your chosen litter box will fit.

✔️ Litter: "Cat litter is a crucial element to ensuring your automatic or self-cleaning litter box is as effective as possible," Dr. Miller said. "Some need self-clumping litter while others need specially designed litter like silica gel crystals. If your cat is particular about what type of litter they prefer but your automatic litter box only works with a specific type, this could be a reason your cat is not accepting the automatic litter box, or that the automatic litter box is not performing as well as possible."

✔️ Adjustment period: Dr. Miller as well as the manufacturers of self-cleaning litter boxes suggest you leave your old litter box out while introducing the new one. Read the instructions carefully for great tips on how to get a nervous cat used to the new machine. Many, for instance, suggest you actually keep the self-cleaning litter box turned off for a few days, and scoop it like a normal box, before you turn on the cleaning function and let your cat get used to it.

If the box uses a mechanical rake to sweep through and clean away clumps of cat waste, you'll need to regularly clean the rake as it will get caked with crud. That's one of the reasons we prefer the rotating self-cleaning litter boxes that sift away waste without a rake.

If the box connects to an app, the machine can monitor things like how often a cat is using the litter box, which can help identify health issues sooner. This all gets trickier if you have several cats who are within ounces of each other, however.

• Odor control : "Regular automatic cleaning and a sealed waste compartment reduces odor," Dr. Miller said. If your box is connected to an app you'll be notified when to empty the receptacle and when to top up the litter. How do self-cleaning litter boxes work?

These are electronic devices that must be plugged in, which means they can't go just anywhere — they must be near an outlet. Many self-cleaning litter boxes require sandy, hard-clumping litter. Your cat does its business, buries its own waste and then the solid or liquid waste mixes with the sandy litter to form hard clumps.

When your cat jumps out, sensors detect your cat leaving, and the cleaning cycle begins. Both use it (though one prefers it more than the other) and it’s a much sleeker, quieter version of the Litter-Robot 3 Connect, which I owned until I upgraded. Not only is this thing super quiet, it saves on how much litter we buy and contains smell very well. The waste drawer is deep and the app alerts me when it’s full. This single unit also works for up to four cats . The only drawback is litter pellets still end up on the floor outside the Litter-Robot 4, despite the rubber grooves on the entrance step meant to catch litter.

Especially in homes with more than one cat, I found this made kitty duty much easier. The interior is huge but the opening is narrower than the new model (though my cats had no trouble getting in and out).

If you’re a bit of a clean freak (which I totally understand), you’re gonna love the sanitation feature on this automatic litter box. Leo’s Loo Too uses a UV ray inside the waste drawer to get rid of 99.9 percent of the gross stuff (like parasites and bacteria) hanging out in there. This box is slightly smaller than the Litter-Robots, which means it takes up less space but provides a smaller opening for kitty. One reviewer says both of her Maine Coons are able to get in and out and use it regularly, so large cats do fit. Smarty Pear offers a 90-day trial, so if you or your cats don’t like it, you can send it back (as long as you used 100 percent clay-clumping litter ).

The manufacturer says crystal litter “is formulated to eliminate odors five times more efficiently than clay or clumping litter.” Like other automatic boxes listed here, you’ll likely use less litter overall with this box than traditional litter boxes. At a fraction of the cost of many automatic boxes , this is definitely worth a try.

Both models let you know how often your cat is using the box, which can be especially helpful if you’re tracking a sick or elderly cat’s bathroom habits .

While many TikTokers are cracking up at this cat's unusual use of the litter box, it's important to recognize potential deeper meanings for this cat's actions.

Cats like to keep themselves clean and well-groomed, puzzling owners who spot their feline sleeping or playing in a litter box. Pet care site Purina reported that kittens will sometimes roll around in a litter box while learning the ropes and experimenting with the world around them. That shouldn't set off any alarm bells.

Owners should seek a vet's opinion when they find their pets spending a little too much time in the litter box as it could indicate their cats are experiencing fear or anxiety, urinary problems, constipation or diarrhea, as well as underlying illnesses, mobility issues or cognitive decline. Cats could also hang out in the litter box to mark their territory.

The randomness of the TikTok clip left viewers in stitches and quickly went viral, reaching over 1.2 million likes and 5,478 comments.

"Everyone's all feeling bad, but cats legit just be getting themselves into situations lol he's FINE. Cats be cats," commented a viewer.

A second TikToker pointed out: "Cats will do anything to throw that damn litter everywhere."

The official account for Google joked: "When the event for nap time is set to the wrong location."
