You Won’t Believe the Sneaky Way I Get 3 Days’ Worth of Extra Clothes Through TSA

It’s the secret packing hack I swear by as a “carry-on only” travel writer.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

Although I see nothing wrong with checking a bag every so often, I’ve always viewed it as a personal goal to travel “carry-on only” when I fly. It started when I was a kid, flying on my airline pilot dad’s standby passes. My options then were to carry on my suitcase or risk having a bag end up in a city where I wasn’t. Although my standby status expired the second I married my military pilot husband, I still prefer carrying on , whether I’m flying for work (as a professional travel writer) or for pleasure (when my self-induced challenge intensifies as I pack carry-ons for my two kids as well).

I’ve learned all the packing hacks over the years; I can roll clothes and stuff socks in shoes with the best of them, and I’m a pro at clipping in extras — like mini coolers and water bottles — with my trusty carabiner collection. (Don’t even get me started on the viral TikTok pillowcase hack that helped us travelers carry more clothes on board.) This is exactly why I bought the Tube Travel Neck Pillow — the multi-use travel pillow you can store up to three days’ worth of clothing in — and wow, did it deliver.

Tube Travel Neck Pillow

Welcome to the sneaky carry-on storage solution that saves you checked bag fees. All you have to do is simply remove the foam insert from the removable cover and replace it with your clothing. Simple but effective, right?

Other neck pillows might be cushier, but they just can’t save you up to $70 worth of checked bag fees for each flight you take them on. I’ve also found it just depends on what you’re stuffing it with — the plusher the clothing (think: sweaters, down jackets) the more comfortable the neck pillow. However, you could also choose to care less about comfort and treat the Tube Travel Neck Pillow as your sole carry-on (especially when traveling on basic economy tickets since there’s no charge for a neck pillow … yet).

Depending on what you’re packing, one single tube can hold enough for three days of clothes. It’s lightweight enough to just toss into your suitcase as a “just-in-case” tool for any trip, like those times your suitcase gets too tight after a few souvenir purchases or as a way of keeping the essentials with you when forced to gate check on full flights.

Everything inside stays secured during travel, and there's no Velcro in the design that would damage clothes. Once loaded, you can bend and twist the pillow into any shape and snap closed to securely fasten around your luggage handle, or just wear it around your neck en route to your flight.

As a mom, I use this sneaky packing trick for storing extra diapers, which, as any traveling parent knows, take up a ridiculous amount of space in a suitcase. I bought the Tube for its versatility as a packing tool and was convinced by its five-star ratings at Amazon for its comfort.

In the past, the Tube Travel pillow has been so popular that it's sold out at Amazon, but the good news is that if it does, you can get the equally genius Dot & Dot Twist Memory Foam Travel Neck Pillow to achieve the same hack. Similar to the Tube Travel Neck Pillow, the Dot & Dot Memory Foam Travel Pillow has more than 9,000 five-star ratings at Amazon and plenty of praise from travelers, too.

Dot & Dot Twist Memory Foam Travel Neck Pillow

One Amazon reviewer said they're a carry-on only flier who used the packing hack, removing the Dot & Dot's memory foam and "replacing [it] with clothes that I would pack anyway" — and they said it "worked like a charm." But let's not discount its comfort when used as a neck pillow with the memory foam inside, either. Another reviewer attested that on a 28-hour road trip, this comfortable pillow was "a life-saver" and the "best road trip pillow ever." Imagine how comfy it would be stuffed with their favorite packable puffer or down jacket.

Trust me, the Tube Travel Neck Pillow is the ultimate hack for anyone looking to maximize their carry-on potential … which is literally what I live for as a frequent traveler. Any time a product can serve two purposes, my ears perk up, and, thanks to this dual-purposed neck pillow, they now rest easily in flight as well. And if you're looking for more handy travel accessories to add to your arsenal, keep reading to find more top-rated products available at Amazon.

The 14 Best Travel Neck Pillows [2023 Buyer’s Guide]

What To Look for in a Travel Neck Pillow

1. the non-traditional “pillow” everyone’s talking about , 2. the most positively-reviewed memory foam pillow, 3. the best design for the hot and sweaty traveler, 4. the chin support you’ve been longing for, 5. a bendy pillow with a customizable shape, 6. the “a bit confusing, but figure it out and you’re golden” pillow, 7. the best comfy-cozy travel pillow we’ve seen, 8. the pillow that looks ridiculous but is pretty comfortable, 9. the low-key inflatable pillow option, 10. the best travel pillow for minimalists, 11. the best tray table sleep of your life (if you can stomach the embarrassment), 12. a versatile option that takes you from plane z’s to hotel z’s, 13. a travel pillow your kiddos will love, 14. the 3-in-1 travel pillow, final thoughts.

See our Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

Have you ever nodded off in your seat only to jerk your head up in alarm, wondering if your neighbor saw that drool on your chin? Or been frustrated because you needed that inflight shuteye, but you just couldn’t get comfy as hard as you tried?

Yep — sometimes traveling can be downright uncomfortable. But is there anything you can do to snuggle up a little easier in the air? You bet there is.

Gone are the neck pillows of the past with their uniform U-shape, little to no support, and shoddy quality (well… they’re not literally gone, unfortunately, but you know what we mean!).

Today we’re breaking down 14 of the best travel pillows on the market to help you nab your greatest inflight z’s yet.

Neck pillow material

Material is one of the most important factors when choosing the right travel neck pillow as it will be cradling your neck, and often, touching your face. Some fleece materials can be super soft and comforting but may cause your neck to get too hot and sweaty, so you’ll want to make sure the material is breathable as well.

Carting your neck pillow through airports and on airplanes can mean that it won’t stay as fresh and clean as it once was, so a machine washable neck pillow is ideal, or at least a removable cover that you can wash regularly.

Molded neck pillow

Support is another vital element of a neck pillow as you’re not always going to have a wall or window to lean against. Choose a pillow that keeps your head in an upright position (with your nose and chin inline) using padding or an internal frame. That way, you won’t arrive at your destination with an achy neck or annoy your neighbor by accidentally resting on their shoulder.

Size and Portability

Neck pillow size

As your neck pillow will need to fit into or attach to your carry-on, you should look for something that isn’t too bulky or that compresses into a storage pouch. Although sometimes not as comfortable, inflatable neck pillows are still a popular choice as they’re small and lightweight to carry and can be inflated and deflated in seconds.

If you’re a frequent long-haul or red-eye flyer, you’ll want to consider something more cushioned and comfortable, such as a memory foam pillow.

The 14 Best Travel Neck Pillows

Neck pillows can significantly improve your comfort on a long flight, car, or train journey. Here are some of the best neck pillows on the market.

trtl Pillow

The trtl Pillow looks more like a scarf or wrap than an actual pillow. This inventive new design comes from 2 mechanical engineers who were looking to create something superior to the traditional U-shaped pillow.

Simply place the ribs (this device’s hidden, internal support) up against your head and neck, then wrap the fabric portion around and Velcro in place.

The velvety fleece (which is hypo-allergenic and machine washable) creates a type of hammock to cradle your head and neck, so there’s no need to lean against a window… or your unsuspecting neighbor. At 0.29 pounds, it’s extremely lightweight, and it folds up to half the size of a traditional travel pillow.

You can start to see why this product is causing such a stir!

What We Like

  • Can be positioned for support on either side of your head

What We Don’t Like

  • The material can make your neck warm

Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow

The Cabeau Evolution is one of the most positively-reviewed travel pillows on the market. You may think it looks a lot like the traditional U-pillow, but we encourage you to dig a little deeper into the design.

This pillow is built with a responsive memory foam core in a patented ergonomic design that provides 360 degrees of support for your head and neck. Whether you tend to bobble sideways, backward, or forward, you’re covered all the way around. The adjustable toggles also help provide the optimal level of support.

Additionally, the pillow’s flat back prevents the shape from pushing your head forward into an uncomfortable position. It’s a bit larger than some others on the list, but it rolls up to a quarter of its full size for transport (carrying bag included).

The soft, washable cover includes a “media pouch” for your device, and Cabeau also throws in a pair of memory foam earplugs to boot. Oh, and it comes with a 2-year satisfaction warranty.

You may remember seeing this item featured on our list of Carry-on Travel Essentials for Short and Long Flights . This pillow certainly tops the list for a couple of bobble-headed sleepers here at Upgraded Points!

  • Can be attached to any seat using the strap
  • It’s quite large and bulky

Cabeau Evolution Cool Neck Support Pillow

Some people are simply hot-natured by design, so things can get a bit sticky (literally) when you’re on a plane full of people stalled at the gate without A/C for what feels like hours.

Once you’re finally airborne, the air comes on, but it’s too late — by that point, you’re already sweating profusely, and the thought of donning a poly-cotton neck pillow makes you want to cry. Behold the Cabeau Evolution Cool.

This pillow has all the perks of the standard Evolution Pillow (memory foam core, flat back, 360-degree support, adjustable toggles, washable cover) but also includes a center portion of cooling air circulation vents to keep you refreshed.

Additionally, it rolls down to half its full size to fit in its deluxe travel case for convenient packing. You get a pair of memory foam earplugs included with this one, too, as well as the 2-year satisfaction warranty.

  • Has breathable vents to keep your neck cool
  • Can be too tight for some people

BCOZZY Chin Supporting Travel Pillow

The BCOZZY also garners tons of great reviews on Amazon. This lightweight wrap-around pillow allows for adjustable chin support to prevent drooping.

While BCOZZY doesn’t quite elaborate on what the pillow itself is made of, it boasts a “breathable soft cover” with “bounce-back filling,” advertising a “flexible but solid structure” to use in a variety of seating positions.

The entire pillow is machine washable, and it comes with a small loop and snap on the back to attach it to your travel bags. Plus, it comes in a child-size * with fun, bright patterns and cute character bags.

  • Doesn’t push the head forward
  • Needs frequent adjustment

Twist Memory Foam Travel Pillow for Neck, Chin, Lumbar and Leg Support

The Twist Travel Pillow has a neat little design that allows you to bend the roll into just about any shape you’d like to cradle your head and lull you into a sweet slumber.

While Dot&Dot doesn’t readily disclose what the main mechanism is that allows for the bend, it does state that there’s a luxury memory foam core that’s covered in a machine washable cotton cover.

It encourages travelers to also try the Twist Pillow as lumbar support or to relieve other pressure points while flying. Additionally, note the snap closure that allows you to secure the pillow around your neck, or attach it to your purse or carry-on while in transit.

This pillow is great for Goldilocks-types — those who can’t sleep until the support is juuuust right.

  • Has a removable, machine-washable cover
  • The snap closure can sometimes come undone

J-Pillow (Blue) Chin Supporting Travel Pillow

The J-Pillow is another funny-looking pillow that appears as if the standard U-shape has sprouted an arm. It also comes with instructions… for a travel pillow… because apparently, this one can get a bit confusing.

The idea is for the J to support your head from under the chin. However, the alternative uses pictured mean that whichever way you cuddle up to this awkward little guy, it’ll likely make you more comfortable.

The J-Pillow is made from “high-quality 3D filling,” and has a “plush” cover. One downside to the cover is that it’s not removable and therefore is not machine washable. It does have a snap for quick on-the-go travel and compacts into a tight ball.

  • Comes with a compression bag for easy transportation
  • Doesn’t work as well when not leaning against something

Huzi Infinity Pillow

The Huzi Infinity Pillow is the coziest travel pillow on the market. Just look at it — doesn’t this want to make you snuggle up and snooze for days?

This pillow balances softness and support, with a cutting-edge microfiber fill that expands and intertwines to form air pockets. Its outer cover is a bamboo fabric designed for breathability and temperature regulation, which allows you to stay cool when it’s warm and warm when it’s cool.

Plus, due to its unique shape, you can also use it for lumbar support, tray table sleep, snuggling, etc.

While it’s a bit bulkier than some other options on this list, there’s no denying its cushy nature is worth the space it takes to pack (or wear as a plush “scarf” around the airport). The entire pillow is machine washable — just make sure to line dry.

  • It’s adaptable for many positions
  • Quite a large travel pillow

TRAVELREST Premium Travel, Neck & Body Pillow

Yes, the TRAVELREST Premium may look strange, but it gets rave reviews. When deflated, this pillow insert (and cover) roll up tight to save loads of space when packing. When you’re ready to snooze, just give it a few puffs to inflate and then secure it with the strap to keep it in place!

The whole thing deflates in a matter of seconds, so you can roll it back up and pop it in your carry-on for a quick getaway. The machine washable cover is a soft microfleece, and it comes with memory foam inserts for added comfort.

Hot Tip: TRAVELREST also sells the original TRAVELREST and the cover separately on Amazon, so be careful when you purchase! If you think you’ve found a major sale, be sure it’s the right selection if you want the 2 pieces to come packaged together. Alternatively, it is nice that you can buy another pillow or cover alone if the need arises.

  • Deflates and rolls up for compact transportation
  • Can be quite large for an economy seat

AirComfy Ease Inflatable Travel Pillow with Luxuriously Soft Washable Cover

The Ease Inflatable Travel Pillow from AirComfy is a great option for travelers who feel a bit claustrophobic with other pillows that secure around the neck. The Ease’s unique butterfly shape is designed to cradle the arch around the back of your neck to provide support where you need it.

How much support? That’s up to you  — it’s easy to inflate, and you can adjust the level with the valve at the top. There’s also some inner foam to help the pillow feel more substantial with less of that inflatable “bounce.”

The Ease is also nice for those who want something slightly smaller than the traditional U (or any of the larger pillows above). It comes with a soft, removable, machine washable cover, in addition to an elastic band you can use to secure it in place around a headrest.

Lastly, AirComfy encourages travelers to try this pillow out as lumbar support, too, since you can easily adjust the inflation for optimal support in this use as well.

  • Very easy to inflate
  • Air can sometimes leak out

2 in 1 Travel Pillow and Eye Mask

The 2-in-1 Travel Pillow and Eye Mask is your go-to if you’re more of a minimalist and you want some versatility. If you want something smaller than the traditional U, this little pillow can be worn in several different ways — even doubling as an eye mask when necessary.

The band itself is a poly/spandex blend, and the pillow portion is filled with soft polyester. This allows the pillow to more or less sculpt to your preferred sleeping position so you can sink in and zone out.

While it doesn’t hold your head up completely, it still does a pretty good job of helping you get comfortable. Plus, it’s a lot less eye-catching than several other options on this list.

  • Compact and lightweight for your carry-on
  • Doesn’t provide any neck support

JefDiee Inflatable Travel Pillow

This inflatable tray table pillow’s design is mirrored after a massage chair — you know, where you sit down and place your head in the cradle. Via the holes in the side, you can slip your arms through to up the comfort level… essentially giving your new pillow a big hug.

JefDiee  claims this pillow can be inflated in seconds with just 5 breaths Plus, you can easily adjust the fill to accommodate your height and firmness preference. In turn, it deflates in seconds and can be folded up to “book-size” for packing.

The PVC flocking material is strong, soft and machine washable, and doesn’t smell of plastic. Yay!

  • Quick and easy to inflate and deflate
  • Can sit too low for tall people

VISCO LOVE ProComf Travel  Memory Foam Pillow

With the VISCO LOVE ProComf Memory Foam Pillow, you sink into slumber as if you’re resting on a cloud. The material has microcapsules with a special thermic coating to create the optimal temperature for sleeping and to avoid any sweating — so this really isn’t your average memory foam.

Plus, this pillow allows for the perfect balance of soft yet springy support, and it’s guaranteed to last. It can even help alleviate and prevent back and neck pain by proving the right support.

Although slightly bulkier than your average neck pillow, it weighs less than half a liter of water, so it is pretty portable. In addition, it’s certainly better to use if you’ve got a window seat … so you may be starting to wonder why it’s even a contender here.

By bringing it along, you’ll likely catch some sweeter z’s on the flight, and you can bet your bottom dollar it’s better than 99% of the hotel pillows out there. Basically, 2 birds, 1 stone, people (plus, you can also use it as a luxe lumbar support … so more like 3 birds)!

  • Great for sleeping in warm environments
  • The firm support won’t suit everyone

Cloudz Plush Animal Neck Pillows

Cloudz Plush’s bright, fun pillows are perfect for your little adventurer’s enjoyment! Available in 19 cute animal designs, these soft pillows will support and comfort your child’s head* on journeys short or long.

This traditional U-shape pillow is filled with cushy poly fill, and both this and the soft fleece covering are hypoallergenic. You don’t need to worry about your little one spilling or drooling on the pillow as it’s machine washable and will soon be as good as new.

  • Machine washable
  • No clasp to attach to your carry-on

Omni Pillow | 3-in-1 Travel Pillow

This pillow feels built for adventurers, but of course, it could be extremely useful for just about any traveler. Whether you need it as a neck pillow, double pillow, or pillow topper, the certified Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class I Fulfilled memory foam is sure to comfort you.

Those are some big words, but suffice it to say that means it’s serious quality — this pillow is built for compression resistance, durability, and support. Plus, it’s hypoallergenic and CFC/HCFC-free.

The pillowcase is made from material used in high-performance sportswear: it’s machine washable, light, yet durable, and won’t pill over time. It’s also got a built-in sleeve for your device and a cord hole for your headphones.

Also, the outer shell is soft yet sturdy AND it’s waterproof. Go-go-gadget pillow, anyone?

Because in-flight sleep is possible, even in the middle seat..

Portrait of Katherine Gillespie

In this article

Best travel pillow overall.

  • Best less-expensive
  • Best memory-foam
  • Best inflatable
  • Best for specific seats
  • Best for sleeping on the tray table
  • Best for traveling with kids

While buying a travel pillow at the airport is always an option, I’ve been sleeping much better on planes since I started planning my in-flight sleep routine ahead of time. A good travel pillow also suits your sleeping position, especially if you’re a side sleeper who tends to get stuck in the dreaded middle seat. It should pair well with a light-blocking eye mask as well as earplugs to drown out engine noise. And the best travel pillows are not only comfortable but also easy to pack — they shouldn’t be a nuisance once you arrive at your destination.

To find travel pillows for every kind of sleeper and traveler, my fellow Strategist travel writer, Rachael Griffiths, and I asked frequent fliers for their picks, then tested those out for ourselves on both long-haul and domestic flights. We also spoke to chiropractors about the science behind travel pillows. While you’re here, you may want to check out my guides to the best carry-on luggage and the best refillable toiletry bottles .

What we’re looking for

First, consider the type of travel pillow you’re interested in: U-shaped versions that go around the neck or traditional flat pillows that have been shrunken down for portability are most common. U-shaped pillows are designed to prevent lateral bending in the neck — “It’s that move to sort of pinch the cell phone between your shoulder and ear,” says Dr. Carla Fischer , the director of quality and patient safety at NYU Langone Spine Center. That bending to the side, she says, is the most important thing to prevent, but not everyone sleeps in the same position or has the same concerns, so I’ve included several styles in this story.

Below you’ll find pillows made with memory foam, filled with beads, or are inflatable — each of which has its own pros. Dr. Claire Fitzpatrick, founder of Bed-Stuy Chiropractic, believes that memory foam is the most “accommodating” when it comes to travel. When I asked her what she meant, she explained that “if you get a medium to medium-firm memory-foam sort of pillow, it accommodates you, but it doesn’t let you dig into it too much.”

When it comes to thickness “the sides should come up to the height of your earlobes,” says Wainani Arnold , founder of the Wainani Wellness Center and in-flight wellness expert for Hawaiian Airlines. “The back of the neck pillow should be flat or only as thick as the distance between the back of your neck to the back of your head (one to two inches). If it is too thick in the back, the pillow will push your neck forward from the chair too much and will potentially dump your head back, which is not ideal for your neck.”

Packability

Between a carry-on and a personal item, both stuffed to the brim, finding room for something as large as a pillow can be cumbersome. The most packable among travel pillows are the inflatable ones. Others filled with memory foam or cotton are a little trickier to deal with — but are likely more comfortable. This is a trade-off, depending on how long your flight is. And often, neck pillows often have a snap closure at the front that can easily be used to secure it to the handle of your suitcase.

Trtl Pillow

Shape: Neck pillow | Fill: No fill | Thickness: Thin | Packability: Easy

This is the travel pillow I use when I journey from New York City to my hometown of Perth, Western Australia. That’s about 23 hours of flying, and I’ll spend at least half of that time sleeping peacefully thanks to the Trtl. This device is like a scarf crossed with an Elizabethan collar and achieves the main goal of a neck pillow — preventing lateral bending in the neck — thanks to the plastic brace stowed inside its padding. You can adjust this brace and choose which side you prefer nodding off toward.

Griffiths is also a Trtl fan. “The first time I tested out the Trtl, I was out like a light,” she says. “The brace’s angle hits just right: There is no sloping so much that your neck bends unnaturally, but it’s supportive enough for you to relax into a decent sleep.” Lauren Maternowski, editor at Pack Hacker, likes that it allows her to fully lean against the seat’s headrest, and former Strategist staffer Rosie Percy also found that with the adjustable Trtl she was “able to sleep through a flight for the first time in my adult life, touching down feeling refreshed and without a crick in my neck.” The Points Guy’s travel editor, Madison Blancaflor, says the Trtl is the only way to survive long-haul flights in economy. And Scott Keyes of Going (formerly known as Scott’s Cheap Flights) also echoes all this praise: “What I like about it is its versatility. It lets you sleep decently even if you’re in the middle seat, and this one is small enough to easily tuck into your backpack.”

Best less-expensive travel pillow

Samsonite Magic 2-in-1 Travel Pillow with Pocket in Charcoal

Shape: Neck and lumbar pillow | Fill: Not listed | Thickness: 2 inches | Packability: Average

If you aren’t exactly sure if you’ll need neck support or lumbar support, a convertible pillow like this might be your best bet. This neck pillow folds up into a square-shaped pillow that can then be used on your lower back or up against a window. It can also be rolled up into the built-in pocket for storage — which is great for saving space and also shielding the pillow from any germs in the airport. Taryn White of The Trip Wish List tells me it has teeny pockets for earbuds, gum, and mints, a big pro if you usually find yourself rummaging around to find your essentials mid-flight. It has a less convenient hook (compared to a strap) to secure it to your luggage, but the snaps that close the front of the pillow provide another option for strapping it on. I couldn’t track down the fill used in this pillow, but the general consensus from reviewers is that it is “firm but not too hard for me and my aching neck” (according to one reviewer on the Bed,Bath & Beyond website).

Best memory-foam travel neck pillow

Cabeau Evolution Memory Foam Travel Pillow

Shape: Neck pillow | Fill: Memory foam | Thickness: 5 inches | Packability: Easy

I’ll admit that sometimes I cheat on my Trtl with Cabeau’s more traditional-looking travel pillow, which is a vast improvement on the ones you can buy at the airport. It’s a U shape, but with slightly raised sides to stop your head from slumping (and supports your jaw to prevent open-mouth breathing, says travel blogger Carmen Sognovi ). It’s made from memory foam, and it has a flattened back, which allows it to be flush with the chair. This helps your spine align with the chair for more comfort (according to Fitzpatrick). But the best feature is the adjustable strap that fastens the travel pillow to a headrest — which prevents you from flopping forward once you’re sound asleep. Once I’m locked into my Cabeau, I have no choice but to sleep, and I’ve successfully snored away for countless hours while wearing it. I’ll also note that while it takes up more space than the Trtl, the Cabeau stuffs easily into a surprisingly chic circular bag that clips to the outside of my backpack or over the luggage handle of my suitcase.

Best inflatable travel neck pillow

Cabeau Air Evolution Inflatable Pillow

Shape: Neck pillow | Fill: Inflatable | Thickness: Adjustable | Easy to pack

The same brand also makes an inflatable version of its travel pillow — and though I generally don’t like inflatable pillows, this one is a good option. It inflates to five inches thick but is just the size of a soda can when deflated. Just like the memory-foam pillow, this one has a flat back to help keep your neck in line with the seat, and it has a neck strap to keep your head super-stable. “They are a bit higher than most neck pillows and have a special toggle you can connect and tighten so the pillow doesn’t fall off,” says Jennifer Lachs of Digital Nomad Girls . Lachs admits that the memory-foam pillow above is “even more comfortable,” but the inflatable is better if you want to travel light. (Initially, I thought that inflatable was synonymous with adjustable — the more air you put in, the taller it will be, and less air will make it less firm — but Fischer said it’s a bad idea to not fill up these pillows all the way, as that’s not how they were designed to be used.)

Best inflatable travel lumbar pillow

Therm-a-Rest Lumbar Travel Pillow

Shape: Lumbar pillow | Fill: Inflatable | Thickness: 2 inches | Packability: Easy

Here’s a different type of travel pillow — it’s designed for lumbar (rather than neck) support. As a WFH-er who’s rather particular about ergonomic office chairs , I notice the lack of lumbar support on airport seats whether it’s long- or short-haul flights. “In a proper chair, the lumbar part should actually push out to support that curve in your low back, but they don’t do that on planes, because if they did, it would affect their seating, so a lot of them curve in,” says Dr. Jared Hoffman of Williamsburg Chiropractic . His recommended solution is this pillow that inflates to two inches thick and reduces stress on the joints and discs of your lower back by supporting that lower-back curve. Hoffman not only recommends it to patients but says “this I have used personally and I think it’s one of the best products I’ve come across.” And as it’s inflatable, it’s super-easy to travel with — just deflate and roll into your bag once you disembark.

Best travel pillow for the middle seat

Travelrest Ultimate Travel Neck Pillow

Shape: Neck pillow | Fill: Inflatable | Thickness: 3.5 inches | Packability: Easy

This inflatable pillow is worn like a sash, and it gives you something to loll your head against (apart from the person sitting next to you). On a recent flight to Italy, Griffiths chose the dreaded middle seat on purpose to see how well the Travelrest really works. “I’m obsessed with this hideous inflatable golf club,” says travel writer Teddy Minford, who first told us about the unique travel pillow. “It creates something to lean against, even if you’re in the middle seat.” After testing it, Griffiths agrees with Minford that the pillow gives you something to rest your head against — and she successfully managed to get a few hours of sleep on her early flight. Though she felt herself sloping a little toward the side she was resting on, she was overall impressed with how much the pillow improved the usually uncomfortable experience of middle seating. It was also super-easy to transport: When deflated, it rolls up to the size of an iPhone.

Best travel pillow for the window seat

J-Pillow

Shape: Head and neck pillow | Fill: Polyester filling | Thickness: 3 inches | Packability: Easy

The aptly named J-Pillow has a main body that supports the crook of your neck and a cushion extending below the chin to stop your head sliding forward. Mercedes Arielle is a window-seat person and says the J-Pillow is best at cradling her head, shoulder, and chin on flights. For Arielle, that three-pronged support is essential “because I rest my head against the window so I can maximize every inch of my window seat.” Griffiths tried one, too, and liked how the chin cushion didn’t extend too far around her neck and the main body of the pillow opened up in a V-shape so she could really wedge her head inside. The material felt more luxurious than the average travel pillow as well — it has a fleecy lining that you can nuzzle down into. It has become her go-to for train journeys, because it’s cushy enough to absorb the vibrations of the tracks. You can compress the pillow to half its size in a carry bag, then use its loops to attach it to your luggage.

Best travel pillow for tray-table sleeping

Ostrich Pillow Original Napping Pillow

Shape: Head pillow  | Fill: Polystyrene microbeads | Thickness: Not listed | Packability: Challenging

Mid-overnight flight, the tray table can begin to look very tempting — but it’s far from a comfortable or stable surface. For some extra padding, Fitzpatrick likes this pillow that’s more like a helmet. It covers all sides, including the forehead, so it can be used in a number of situations. There is a hole for your mouth so you can breathe, but otherwise it’s a pillow, eye mask, and noise-canceling headphones all in one. Once out of the box, however, it could be cumbersome to travel with.

Best pillow for traveling with kids

Huzi Infinity Pillow

Shape: Neck pillow | Fill: Polyester filling | Thickness: Not listed | Packability: Easy

The Huzi pillow, like an extremely plush scarf, can wrap around your neck or lower back — or even both at the same time — to create a highly customized, optimum sleeping position. Writer and mom-of-one Chantel Tattoli says that this pillow is her foolproof method for traveling with her child. She notes it has an almost mystical effect on her daughter on long flights. “Generally, she seems to accord a magical ‘fairy ring’ quality to this fluffy circle, as if once she’s thrown it over her, she’s staked some space in which things are pretty good,” says Tattoli. The Huzi’s design makes it a great pick for those with scoliosis, too. “Even mild scoliosis can affect your comfortable position in a tight seat,” says Fitzpatrick. “The adjustable lemniscate-type pillows can be good for this.” Wearing it through the airport like a scarf also makes it easy to carry, but if you’d rather throw it in your bag, it rolls up neatly into a little ball.

Best travel knee pillow

Circa Air Inflatable Knee Pillow for Side Sleepers

Shape: Knee pillow | Fill: Inflatable | Thickness: Adjustable | Packability: Easy

Some people can’t fall asleep without a knee pillow — musician Waxahatchee is one of them, and this used to present a problem when she went on tour for months at a time. Because a plush pillow is hard to pack, she found this inflatable one that she says has been life-changing. It takes just three big breaths to blow up and is surprisingly soft. “I don’t overinflate it — I leave a little bit of air out of it so it has a bit of squish,” she says.

Best stuffable travel pillow

Cosy Collection The Nab (Neck and Bag) Pillow Stuffable with Clothes

Shape: Neck pillow | Fill: User’s choice | Thickness: Adjustable | Packability: Average

If you’re flying on a budget airline and trying to pack light , you could opt for this stuffable travel pillow as a way of sneaking extra clothes onto the plane. Jasmine Anderson and Natasha Wilson (travel agents and co-hosts of the podcast Travel Fly Sexy ) both recommend it. “It’s a great hack because you can fit extra T-shirts, shorts, and swimwear into something that no one is looking at you sideways for because it’s a pillow,” says Wilson. And while there are numerous versions of this kind of pillow on the market, I especially like this one because it is covered in a plush fabric for extra comfort and clips at the front for extra neck support.

One of the greatest struggles of traveling long distances is trying to turn our tiny upright spaces, whether on a car, bus, train, or plane, into a cozy area that’s comfortable enough for sleeping. But there's one travel companion can make all the difference: a neck pillow.

While all kinds of shapes and sizes exist out there, what our bodies really require to get a proper nap, or even a good night’s sleep, is neck support that mimics what we would get if we were lying down in an actual bed.

From traditional U-shape and inflatable varieties to those packed with ergonomic features, here are seven of the best neck pillows that will truly support you on the road ahead.

The Cushion Lab Ergonomic Travel Neck Pillow

Sale $48, regularly $55.

The Cushion Lab Ergonomic Travel Neck Pillow

The sleep experts at the SleepFoundation.org named The Cushion Lab’s pillow the overall best pick, especially beneficial for those who tilt their heads or tend to have pain while traveling long distances. The asymmetrical 360-degree product sits under the chin and cradles the head all around. Made of the brand’s own memory foam, the recycled polyester rayon fabric pillow offers just the right amount of both cushioning and support, and comes with a stabilizing strap that also helps cater the fit to your sleep style. Plus, it collapses down to about the size of a coffee mug for easy carrying.

Ostrichpillow Go Neck Pillow

Ostrichpillow Go Neck Pillow

The brand known for its out-the-box thinking when it comes to portable pillows has channeled that creativity into a simple neck pillow . The bi-colored product, available in four shades, uses a memory foam core paired with an ergonomic shape to offer all-around support, no matter which way your head turns, with a simple velcro closure locking it in place.

The entire thing compresses down to 60 percent of its size so that it's easy to stash in its pull-string pouch and tuck back into your carry-on. Its removable sleeve is also washable between trips. Plus the Go Neck pillow comes with a 100-day return period and two-year warranty.

Trtl Travel Pillow

Trtl Travel Pillow

The Trtl Travel Pillow starts with a curved hard-shell internal support system that’s then topped with a layer of soft fleece. Simply wrap it around the neck like a scarf in the direction that feels most comfortable to you, whether it’s to the side, front, or back, and its design will naturally support all neck, jaw, and shoulder shapes. It’s half the size of a standard travel pillow and stores flat, so it saves room in your carry-on, too.

Samsonite Magic 2 in 1 Pillow

Samsonite Magic 2 in 1 Pillow

For those who have trouble committing to a single pillow, consider the Samsonite Magic 2 in 1 . The microbead-filled cushion starts as a traditional rectangular pillow that unzips and flips inside out into a U-shape pillow. At just about half a pound, it also comes with a travel clip so you can just snap it onto your luggage and go.

Cabeau Evolution S3 Neck Pillow

Cabeau Evolution S3 Neck Pillow

If you tend to move around in your sleep, the Cabeau Evolution S3 will help rein you in. With built-in seat straps, the pillow doesn’t just stay in place, but it also lifts your head and neck to help with alignment, which will then naturally help relax the back and shoulders for a more peaceful sleep. The shape of the pillow itself—with raised sides and a flatter back—also aids in making it feel like you’re back at home in bed.

6 Best, Editor-Tested Travel Neck Pillows for Your Next Long Flight

Finding the right travel pillow is a must for getting better sleep at 40,000 feet..

  • Copy Link copied

Some travelers are blessed with the ability to fall asleep in various modes of loud, cramped, or otherwise disruptive transport. Others struggle to catch zz’s outside of their own bed, unless the conditions are just right. Whether you consider yourself in the first category or the latter, you (and your neck) will certainly benefit from a high-quality travel pillow.

What to look for in a travel neck pillow

Before you purchase a neck pillow for travel, you’ll want to consider the type of sleeper you are on airplanes. Are you a window seat devotee who plans on sleeping against the side of the plane? Or will you need more neck support since you always chose the aisle seat? Most importantly: Will it fit into your purse or other personal item? These are the features you’ll want to keep in mind when shopping for a travel neck pillow:

Shape: The travel pillows that airlines provide are just a smaller version of regular pillows. But you’ll need something that provides more neck support when sleeping upright in a plane seat. The most common shape of travel pillow you’ll see is U-shaped, but in recent years, brands are coming up with other designs that wrap all the way around your neck or have clever infinity designs that can be worn multiple ways.

Material: The most supportive travel pillows are filled with memory foam, while inflatable pillows are the easiest to pack. But you’ll also want to look at what the outside of the pillow is made of. Fleece will keep you warm on cold planes, while silk will feel the most luxurious. Most importantly, look for a travel pillow with a removable cover so it’s easy to wash in between trips.

Packability: U-shaped pillows are the most ubiquitous type of travel pillow, but they generally don’t pack down, so you’ll have to clip it to the outside of your personal item so it doesn’t take up all the space inside. Inflatable travel pillows pack down the easiest but can also deflate during your flight. Look for travel pillows that aren’t filled with bulky materials or come with a stuff sack so you can compress memory foam versions.

How do you wear a travel neck pillow?

U-shaped travel pillows work better when you wear them with the bottom of the “U” in the front and the clasp in the back.

Didn’t know this? Turns out most people have been wearing them incorrectly all along. In July 2021, TikTok creator @sidneyraz’s video went viral (to date, it has 36.4 million views) when he demonstrated that “travel pillows go in front” as part of his “something I wish I knew before I was in my 30s” series. “Mmm, I’m so comfy,” he said as he showed how his neck and chin are more supported with the bulkiest part of the pillow beneath them.

This was also news to Lyndsey Matthews, AFAR’s senior commerce editor. But she recently tested it out with the Calpak neck pillow featured below and can confirm: It just works better.

Of course, this doesn’t apply to non-U-shaped travel pillows—like the Ostrichpillow Go, Trtl, and Infinity Pillow—that are meant to be worn in a specific way according to their unique designs.

Are travel pillows worth it?

If you’re traveling on a red-eye flight in economy, a travel pillow is a must-have travel accessory for any efforts at getting some shut-eye at 40,000 feet . However, it might not be worth packing a travel pillow for shorter flights during the day—especially if it’s a bulkier model that doesn’t pack down well.

To help you make the best purchase for the way you travel, these packable neck pillows are soft, cozy, and supportive in all the right ways. From memory foam versions to super-compact ones, here are the best travel neck pillows—in no particular order—to bring on your next flight.

  • Buy now: $50, trtltravel.com ; $60, amazon.com
  • Highlights: Ultra-packable, washable

Any qualms about looking silly instantly disappear as soon as you put this unique travel pillow to use.

“It feels a little strange putting it on the first time and sort of looks like a neck brace,” said Rosalie Tinelli, AFAR’s senior audience development manager, in her review of the Trtl . “But who cares how it looks when you’re getting peaceful sleep on an airplane and waking up with zero neck stiffness?”

It’s ergonomically designed to maximize neck support using a genius combination of a strategically placed internal padded frame and a soft fleece wrap (that’s machine washable) to comfortably cradle your head. As an added bonus, it weighs only half a pound and folds up way more compactly than your standard U-shaped pillow to slip easily in any carry-on. Trtl also makes a kids’ version —because you’re never too young to appreciate a good car ride nap.

It’s available in eight different colors of soft bamboo fabric, and you can throw the whole thing in the washing machine after your trip. Though it’s one of the bulkier pillows available, it does come with a Velcro strap so you can roll it up and secure it. You can also purchase a travel case made specifically for this pillow, but that will cost you an extra $13.

Available in five hues (we’re partial to classic charcoal gray), this inflatable pillow can almost blend in with your travel uniform while providing some much-needed sleep support. And once you’ve reached your final destination, simply deflate and pop it in your bag. Our favorite part is the cozy attached hood, which doubles as a subtle “do not disturb” sign that’s ideal for warding off chatty seatmates and piercing overhead lights alike.

Here’s a buying guide to help you select the best travel pillow for your needs:

  • Size and Portability: Consider the size of the travel pillow when deflated or compressed. It should fit easily in your carry-on bag or backpack. Some travel pillows come with a compact carrying pouch or can be attached to your luggage for convenience.
  • Support and Comfort: Look for a travel pillow that provides proper neck and head support, preventing your head from falling forward. Opt for a design that cradles your neck and keeps your spine aligned, reducing the risk of neck pain or discomfort.
  • Cover Material: Choose a pillow with a removable and washable cover. This is essential as travel pillows can become dirty during your journeys.
  • Versatility: Some travel pillows are designed to be used in various positions, like behind your back or under your chin. Consider your preferred sleeping posture and select a versatile option.
  • Durability: Check the quality of materials and construction to ensure the pillow will withstand the rigors of travel.
  • Hygiene and Allergies: If you have allergies, consider hypoallergenic materials and covers that are easy to clean and maintain.
  • Noise: Inflatable pillows may produce noise when you move, which could disturb your sleep. Consider this factor if you’re a light sleeper.
  • Price: Travel pillows come in a wide price range. Set your budget, but keep in mind that investing in a quality pillow can significantly enhance your travel experience.
  • Customer Reviews: Research online reviews and recommendations from other travelers to get insights into the comfort, durability, and overall performance of the pillow you’re considering.
  • Try Before You Buy: If possible, try the travel pillow in-store or borrow one from a friend to assess its comfort and fit before making a purchase.

How to choose a travel neck pillow

Jordi Lippe-McGraw

Travelers have varying opinions on essential carry-on items. However, there's one classic on many lists: a travel neck pillow.

Unfortunately, one of the downsides of exploration is having to deal with some physically uncomfortable situations, like sleeping sitting up. That's why the compact cozy item is so popular. With so many on the market, though, determining the best one for you may take time.

"When you can't lay down on a plane, it's important to try and offer your neck and spine support. Ultimately you want your neck and spine as straight/aligned as possible," Keith Cushner, product expert at the Sleep Foundation , told TPG. "It's important to consider a travel pillow that fits your needs like shape, size and portability."

Here's everything you need to know about choosing a travel neck pillow.

Determine what kind of sleeper you are

To know which travel neck pillow is best, you must decide if you are a forward or backward sleeper. Sitting in a seat, would you place your head on the back of the seat or lean into a pillow on your lap or tray table?

Backward sleepers

"Backward sleepers should look for the c-shaped pillows that can wrap around your neck with little difficulty," chiropractor Dr. Jason Alviene told us.

Seats don't recline much and can cause you to fall forward when you sleep, waking you frequently. Because of this, the pillow's back should be thinner, so it doesn't push your head too far forward, according to Alviene.

The sides of the pillow should also be thicker so they can prop your head up without it falling too far to the side. This will keep the neck in an ideal position with little muscle tension.

Forward sleepers

"Forward sleepers should look for a pillow shaped like a quarter circle," said Alviene. "This will give a rounded side with two straight sides forming a right angle. It should look like a quarter of a pie from the side. The rounded end will be laid towards your face and can easily sit on your lap or the tray as you lean forward. These tend to be larger than the others, so purchasing an inflatable pillow is recommended to make traveling easier."

Find the optimal neck position

A neutral position is the most optimal neck position for sleeping on a plane when you can't lie down.

marvel neck pillow travel

"You want your neck to be in the straightest line possible," Alviene explained. "Should muscles on any side of your neck be stretched, you will wake with pain and possible muscle spasms. With any pillow options, you will have a very good neck position for sitting and resting with the muscles in a normal position without having to contract too much to keep your head in position."

Materials should be comfortable

Travel pillows are made from a variety of materials. Ultimately, it boils down to personal preference.

"It's very important that you find the pillow that is comfortable [and] works for you versus being as concerned with fill as you would be for a bed pillow," said Cushner.

Some materials can make a difference, though.

For example, a travel pillow made with a recycled blend of polyester and rayon won't absorb much heat and help keep you cool. One made with microfleece is gentle on your skin, so it can prevent irritation from moving often. Viscose will also help prevent heat retention and limit skin irritation.

Additionally, a memory foam travel pillow with an ergonomic shape can alleviate common aches and pains. They also tend to offer a good combination of support and softness. However, they can retain more heat and be firmer depending on the brand.

If you opt for a more traditional travel pillow, one with plush down and feather fill will be soft and potentially more versatile if you lean up against a window while sleeping on a plane. Fiber-filled and microbead pillows will also provide a softer feel. Just make sure you have a washable cover.

Alviene added, "Read the materials your pillow is made of because you want to ensure you do not have any allergies before you purchase."

The pros and cons of inflatable pillows

Travel pillows come in all shapes and sizes, including inflatable pillows. Should you choose an inflatable or non-inflatable pillow? There are pros and cons to both.

marvel neck pillow travel

You can (obviously) deflate an inflatable pillow. That means it's very compact when not in use, which is helpful for saving space in your luggage. You can also adjust the air level in an inflatable pillow to accommodate your firmness preference.

Non-inflatable pillows come in a broader range of materials, making it easier to find one that is the most comfortable for you. However, they tend to be bulkier.

Bottom line

Ultimately, several factors go into determining the best travel pillow for you. Understanding how you sleep, the level of firmness you enjoy, and the traveling you're doing will help guide you in the right direction.

An important thing to remember is the pillow's ease of travel. If it doesn't attach to your bag or fit in your luggage, you likely won't use it, making it a waste of money, according to Alviene.

Neck Pillow Buying Guide: What to Know Before You Buy

When you’re looking for the best travel pillow for you, there are a few factors you need to consider. You need to ask yourself some questions. What position do you usually sleep in? What kind of material are you more comfortable with? What travel style do you usually practice? How often do you travel? How much are you willing to spend? The most important factor is neck support, of course! You want to make sure the travel neck pillow you choose will be able to provide the neck support you need to allow you to sleep in whatever position you choose. Inflatable pillows and memory foam pillows are ideal, so make sure you consider those options.

The fabric is also important to consider because it will also add to your comfort. Consider the climate of the places you usually go to. If you often travel to hot climates, travel pillows made of cotton or smooth plastic, while fleece travel pillows are perfect for cold climates. Another important thing to consider is the size and weight of your travel pillow. You want it to suit your travel style, so if you tend to travel light, small and lightweight travel pillows are the perfect option. Inflatable and memory foam pillows are also easier to carry. If you have room to spare, you can choose a microbead travel pillow.

Durability is also a major factor to consider, especially if you’re someone who travels quite frequently. You want to make sure your travel pillow can last for a while, so consider spending a little more to get a lot more value out of it. You also want your travel pillow to be washable so you can always keep it clean. Overall, finding the right neck support travel pillow for you is all about considering key factors. Once you do, it will be easy to choose one from our list.

Concerns and Questions About Travelling Neck Pillows

Are travel neck pillows worth it.

There’s no doubt that travel neck pillows can be a bit of an investment. But if you’re someone who travels often or has to endure long flights, they can definitely be worth the money.

Neck pillows provide support for your head and neck, helping to prevent stiffness and discomfort during travel. They also promote better posture by keeping your head aligned with your spine. And if you suffer from headaches or TMJ, a neck pillow can help alleviate some of that pain by providing gentle pressure on the back of your head and neck.

So if you find yourself asking “are travel neck pillows worth it?”, the answer is most likely yes – especially if you value your comfort while traveling!

What are travel neck pillows for?

Travel neck pillows are designed to provide support and comfort for the head and neck while traveling. They help to keep the head and neck in a neutral position, which can prevent pain and discomfort.

There are a variety of different types of travel neck pillows available, including memory foam, inflatable, and cervical roll models. It is important to choose one that is most suitable for your needs and preferences.

Are travel pillows bad for your neck?

No, travel pillows are not bad for your neck. In fact, they can actually help to support your neck and prevent pain while you are traveling. However, it is important to choose a travel pillow that is the right size and shape for your body and to use it correctly in order to get the most benefit from it.

Travel pillows come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so choose one that will fit your body comfortably. If you are using a pillow that is too big or too small, it can actually be more harmful than helpful. In addition, many people find that inflatable travel pillows provide the best support and comfort while they are traveling.

Are neck pillows good for travelling?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best pillow for travel will vary depending on individual needs and preference. However, many people find that neck pillows can be extremely helpful in making long journeys more comfortable.

Neck pillows can help to support the head and neck, preventing uncomfortable aches and pains that can come from sitting in one position for extended periods of time. They can also help to promote better posture, which can be beneficial both during travel and afterwards.

Some people even find that using a neck pillow can help them to sleep better on planes or trains. Of course, not all neck pillows are created equal. There are a variety of different styles available

Are travel neck pillows safe for toddlers?

It depends. Most travel neck pillows are not recommended for toddlers because they can be a suffocation hazard. However, there are some travel neck pillows that are made specifically for toddlers and they are safe to use.

Be sure to read the product specifications before purchasing a travel neck pillow for your toddler. And if you are still not sure, ask your peditration.

Can travel neck pillows be washed?

Yes, most travel neck pillows can be washed. However, some have a special coating that can be damaged by water, so it’s important to read the care instructions before washing.

Ideally, you should wash your travel neck pillow in the gentle cycle of your washing machine and then air dry it. If you need to clean it more thoroughly, you can also use a mild detergent and spot clean any areas that need attention.

Can you sleep with a travel neck pillow?

You bet! A travel neck pillow is one of the most versatile pieces of gear you can take with you on your journey. It can be used as a traditional neck pillow for sleeping if you don’t have an actual pillow, or it can be used as an impromptu seat cushion on an airplane or bus.

It can even be used to keep your head warm on chilly nights. So go ahead and make the most of your travel neck pillow – you’ll be glad you did!

Who sells travel neck pillows?

Amazon is the leading online retailer for travel pillows. They offer a wide variety of travel neck pillows, as well as other travel accessories.

Is inflatable travel neck pillows good for airplanes?

There is no one definitive answer to this question, as there are a variety of different types of inflatable travel neck pillows and each has its own set of pros and cons. However, in general, inflatable travel neck pillows can be beneficial for airplane passengers looking to get comfortable and get some rest during their flight.

Some of the key benefits of using an inflatable travel neck pillow on an airplane include: added support for your head and neck, the ability to adjust the firmness/inflation level to your preference, and portability (compared to bulky pillow options). Additionally, many people find that sleeping with an inflatable travelling pillow helps them avoid developing a stiff neck or headache during their flight.

Now that you know what are the 10 best travel neck pillows on the market, you won’t have an issue finding the right one for you. Every option on the list will allow you to have more comfortable trips and they’re all affordable, though some are more inexpensive than others. Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

long gray escalator in moscow russia

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

17 Exciting Things to do in Moscow

Written By: Linda Voltaire

the very best things to do in moscow

Visiting Russia? These are the top 17 things to do in Moscow to help you plan your trip.

If the western world has New York City , the first great metropolis on the eastern side of our planet is Moscow. A huge city with a complicated and impressive history, Moscow gets a bad rep over Russian politics – but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Capital to the largest country in the world, Moscow takes the grandeur of its standing very seriously.

This is a place where luxury is king and where opulence takes a front seat in every aspect of life. The buildings are grand and imposing, the parks are luscious and enormous, and even the subway stations look different in Moscow than anywhere else in the world.

Best Things to do in Moscow, Russia

Walking around Moscow is also going through the tumultuous history of the 20th century, which had Russia as one of its main protagonists. There are fascinating remains of these times everywhere in the former Soviet capital, from the gorgeous Seven Sisters skyscrapers to the Orthodox cathedrals that were closed for the better part of a century.  Still, Moscow is also a completely modern city, with a vibrant social and party scene, incredible restaurants, and some of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

After living in Russia’s capital as an ex-pat for four years, I got the privilege to experience not only the main attractions in Moscow but also the everyday life in this huge city and quickly found my sweat spots off the beaten tracks! So here is my list of my top 17 things to do in this exciting metropolis!

Attractions in Moscow

When visiting a famous city like this one, it’s a must to go through the most iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists.

1. The Red Square, Kremlin & Surrounding Area

moscow tourist attractions | St. Basil’s Cathedral

No place tells the story of Moscow’s power in the past century the way the Red Square does. This is where the biggest political meetings in the USSR occurred for many decades, and you can feel the power on each step.

Here, you’ll also find the historic museum at the entrance, showcasing the decades of history behind this iconic landmark. The Lenin Mausoleum, perhaps the most famous resting place in the world and home to the remains of the former communist leader, is also here.

On one side of the Red Square you’ll find the Kremlin, the fortified complex that now hosts the presidential residence. This is also home to the most iconic of all Moscovite landmarks: St. Basil’s Cathedral, a 16th-century marvel of colors. This is the best spot to take a selfie and show the world you’ve reached the Russian capital!

  • Get your Kremlin Skip the Line Tickets and Kremlin tour here.
  • Free cancellation up to 24-hours in advance of the tour.

2. Bolshoi Theatre

moscow things to do | bolshoi theatre

You can easily spend a couple of days just exploring the Moscovite city centre, and the Bolshoi Theatre should be your second stop. Walk past the Red Square and then head to the nearby Bolshoi Theatre, one of the oldest and most renowned houses of opera and ballet on Earth.

Visit for the impressive early 19th-century architecture, but if you’re seeing a ballet performance, make sure you book between 3 and 6 months in advance! I can strongly recommend this as it is a truly unique experience!

  • Book a private 2-hour tour of the legendary Bolshoi Theatre.
  • See the presidential box reserved for tzars, watch a rehearsal and skip the lines through a separate entrance.
  • Free Cancellation up to 24-hours in advance.

3. Luxury Shopping at GUM and TSUM

russia moscow sites | GUM

While many might think of Moscow as the sad place with the long bread queues from the USSR days, it’s been quite the capitalist haven for a while.

If you’re up for some shopping, you’ll find one of the biggest luxury malls in town, TSUM, right behind the Bolshoi and GUM, at the red square. GUM is the most famous department store in town, where you’ll find luxury everywhere and all high-end brand.

All in an imposing late 19th-century building with lots of history, worth a visit just for the design, its bridges and the glass roof even though you are not up for shopping!

4. Christ the Savior Cathedral

things to see in moscow | christ the savoir cathedral

A newer addition to the gorgeous Moscovite cathedrals and my grandeur neighbor during my years in the city Don’t let the young age of this building fool you. After the perestroika in the early 90s, the newly revived Russian Orthodox Church received permission to build a cathedral on this site. They did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church.

The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes as tall as the skies in bright gold and gorgeous paintings and decor! Bring a shawl to cover your hair to adjust to the local tradition.

Head to the back of the cathedral and you will find one of the most photographed bridges in Moscow, the Patriarshiy Most. This is the perfect spot to get a good view and photo of the cathedral but also to see the Kreml and Gorky Park from a distance. Or why not just enjoy a moment watching the river and its boats!

  • Get around Moscow with ease using the Hop On Hop Off boat and Bus ticket. 24, 48 or 72-hour tickets available.

5. Gorky Park

tourist attractions in moscow | gorky park

Cross the river and head to Gorky Park along the Moscow river. The most famous green area in town, similar to New York ’s Central Park and the weekend hangout for locals. There are many beautiful parks in the city, but if you’re only visiting for a few days, this is the unmissable one!

With fair attractions to entertain children, beautiful artificial lakes and gardens, and lots of outdoor activities, it’s a lovely place to relax. A place of rest in the middle of the metropolis. The area in front of the New Tretyakov Gallery & the Muzeon Park of Arts is actually one of my favorite oasis as a bit more quiet and peaceful than Gorky itself.

Why not spend some time in the museum to get a great tour of Russia’s history through art or just enjoy the art exhibition outside where local artists spend their weekends.

6. River Cruising

tourist attractions points of interest

One of the best ways to experience Moscow is from the Moscow River. There are many stops for the boats and one is just next to Gorky Park. See the city from another perspective – and turn the ride into a romantic one by taking the evening cruise. Moscow is magic during the night.

If you’re looking for a truly luxurious experience, take the Radisson Blu cruise – or the Erwin for a delicious seafood dinner. Both stop at Gorky or at the luxury Radisson Royal Hotel, set in one of the Seven Sister’s skyscrapers.

  • We use Get Your Guide when booking city tours and they offer a River Sightseeing Cruise seeing all the main tourist attractions in Moscow

7. Metro Hopping

unusual things in moscow | train station

First inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow subway system is one of the oldest in the world, and certainly the most beautiful. Started under Stalinist times, each metro station is dedicated to grandeur and oozing personality.

Visiting the subway stops is an attraction in and of itself, and Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, Kropotkinskaya are my favorites. Those surrounding the Red Square are also mesmerizing – in general, these are kind of like underground palaces.

Most of the signs at the Moscow Metro now have Latin letters, so it’s very easy to get around!Unfortunately, the trains are not as beautiful and pleasant as the stations but still, this is a true Moscow experience.  Take a guided tour of the 9 most beautiful Metro Stations including the award-winning art deco station. See more details here.

8. Arbatskaya & Artsy Moscow

place to visit in moscow | arabatskaya

Novy Arbat Street is one of the most touristy areas in the city, with lots of shops and cafés directed at visitors. When you walk a little beyond, you’ll find a different part of town, where the hip scene thrives because so many artists live in the area. Just follow the small streets with fewer tourists!

9. Moscow State University View

moscow unique things to do | university

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings hosts the main building of the Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious colleges in Russia – and the one with the best view.

Although this is a little outside the city centre, the sight from above is more than worth it, with the nearby fountains and park and then the whole of the city behind them.

10. Russian Market

where to shop in moscow | russian market

If you love to visit markets wherever you go, Moscow has one of the most impressive ones in the world – the Izmailovsky. You can easily take the metro here and feel like you’ve been transported to another time.

This place was first built in the 16th century and retains the look of an old fairytale, with a lineup of colorful old castle. A lovely local experience beyond the confines of the bustling metropolis, where you can also try some delicious Russian barbecue.

Here, you’ll find beautiful souvenirs at great prices.

Off The Beaten Track Moscow

unique moscow things to do | graffiti

Once you’ve covered the most touristic spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer – and the places below will also be full of locals! Moscow is a city for hipsters, full of trendy and arty spots where you can literally feel the creativity oozing! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend my sweat spots below!

11. Patriarshiye Prudy

moscow unique things to do | patriarshy prudy

This is my favorite area in the entire city! While Moscow is generally a very noisy metropolis, Patriarch Ponds is far quieter, yet such a vibrant place. This is a very hip and trendy area making you think you are rather in Paris than in Moscow. Here the streets are narrow and full of chic eateries and clubs to see the local crowd.

A little bohemian and with an air of peace you won’t find anywhere in the city this is a great spot to spend an afternoon with your thoughts.

12. ArtPlay

museums in moscow | artplay

Barely 15 minutes away from the city center you’ll find the artsiest Moscow district: ArtPlay. For decades, this block was a factory, but it was renovated to become a hub for the arts not too long ago.

Now, you’ll find it’s full of exhibitions, showrooms and art schools – and some of the most creative people in town. Writers, painters, and young hip people use ArtPlay as a rendezvous, and you can feel the creative energy here. The industrial design with modern interior decoration is also a feast for the eyes!

13. Shopping Local Designs

moscow sightseeing | shopping district

If you’re into design, both international and local, you’ll find lots of cute things at Patriarshiye Prudy. Department store Podium Market is also a great spot for shopping, as a department store everywhere in town, with lots of local and international brands. There’s one in the Four Seasons Hotel next to Red Square. My favorite Moscow mall is Tsvetnoy Central Market, a cool spot with great brands, lots of inspo, and even a cute café!

14. Moscow City

modern skyscrapers of moscow

Like many other great capitals of the world, for the past few decades, Moscow has hosted a super modern area full of modern skyscrapers – Moscow City. With a completely different vibe than the rest of town, it’s like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressively tall glass buildings. Here, you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, such as Ruski and Sixty they are perfect spots for dining or enjoying a glass of wine with a view. There are also a relatively new shopping mall with lots of international brands called Affimall!

Wine, Dine, and Party in Moscow

view of moscow from ruski

Gone are the gloomy Moscow days – cold as it might be in the winter, Russia’s capital is a place for the senses. Great food and drinks abound – and the clubs are hot, too!

15. Where to Eat in Moscow

where to eat in moscow

Moscow is a great metropolis where people love to dine out, and there are endless options for delicious food. The flavors are as diverse as you’d expect from a big city, with options of fine dining and little hipster eateries.

  • For traditional Russian flavors, I can’t recommend Café Pushkin, Dr. Zhivago, and Turnadot enough.
  • When looking for international cuisines, Italian is always the way to go, and my local favorite is Probka.
  • Fine dining is best done among the clouds at White Rabbit, with European flavors.
  • As for the hip spots, you can spend a full day just eating around trendy places, from burgers to Asian fusion.

More Dining Options

white rabbit moscow russia

  • Patriarshiye Prudy offers a lot of small and classy spots with cool concepts, like breakfast restaurants I Love Cake and Fresh.
  • For dinner, I love the NYC experience of Saxon & Parole, and the wonderful trendy Pins, with its delicious food and drinks.
  • For delicious Asian food head to CutFish.
  • Lastly, there’s a recent revival of food markets in Moscow, offering lots of great choices of international flavors at affordable places.
  • Don’t miss out the Vietnamese food stand at the Danilovsky market, and everything at Usachevsky!

16. Rooftopping

things to do in moscow russia | city scape

Big cities deserve to be seen from above, having a cocktail among the clouds. These are my recommendations for rooftop bars in Moscow.

  • As I mentioned in the Moscow City section, Sixty & Ruski are two of my favorites, overlooking the newest part of town.
  • White Rabbit and its fine dining is also a lovely place for a fun dinner looking down on Moscow.
  • O2, in the city center, has an advantage above all others: amazing views of the Red Square.
  • Buono, above the Radisson Royal Hotel, might be the most romantic rooftop hotel in town, with its candlelit setting.
  • Also on the Radisson stands the Mercedes. It’s a luxurious and posh experience with delicious cocktails.
  • The Sky Lounge offers a peculiar experience, mixing an old Soviet building with futuristic additions.

17. Moscow by Night

must do in moscow | moskva river

Party the night away! The city is full of bars everywhere, but there are some areas where you’ll find more than others.

  • Patriarshiye Prudy has lots of hip and small clubs and great bars, including the super fun private club Clava, which has a great vibe and people from all walks of life.
  • For more hipster style bars, Red October is the place to go.
  • Streak is a summer favorite, with a lovely terrace to catch a beautiful sunset – plus, their mozzarella bar is delicious.
  • At night, Red October lights up with clubs everywhere, including the cool rooftop one Gipsy.
  • Jagger is also a great spot during summer with a more relaxed vibe in garden setting.
  • For the traditional Russian luxury experience, go to SohoRooms, a whole other world including all-night go-go dancers.

There are so many things to do in Moscow at night and during the day, you definitely need several days to explore this exciting destination.

Moscow is a must-see city, a city like no other ! I hope you will enjoy this Russian metropolis as much as I did!

These places look so awesome! Moscow is truly a beautiful city

Very good article, you have explained so nicely. Russia has always been a part of history and its good to know about much more about architecture and other things, wish i could see the inside of façade

Thanks for sharing such a nice article. You have very beautifully explained everything that one need for a trip to Moscow.

Nice article. Love the hidden gems and graffiti art, would love to visit Artplay. Thanks for a comprehensive guide to Moscow!

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here we can find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers.

Your article is good and meaningful .

Thanks for sharing about ArtPlay district, we didn’t know about it and it looks amazing 🙂 Hopefully there’ll be a second time in Moscow, we visited last May and really liked the city!

Wonderful stuff! I’ve been to Moscow, but not properly – it’s a long story lol!

Anyhoo, my next thing is to fly from Berlin to Moscow and then travel from there to Beijing via the Trans-Mongolian / Trans-Siberian train. Now, if only I could just find the time …!

I hear Moscow is very beautiful at night. I hope to get out there one day. A friend of mine went to St. Petersburg and had a great experience. Despite all the tension we see on the news with Russia and other Countries like the U.S. I wonder what the sentiment is with Russians and foreigners visiting their country for tourism. Especially Americans.

that looks like quite a beautiful place. 🙂
