These two unique bush homes, Ant's Nest and Ant's Hill, are located on their own private game reserve in the beautiful and diverse Waterberg region of South Africa. They offer some of the most exciting game viewing and horseback riding in Africa and situated at an altitude of 4500 feet above sea level, this wonderful region offers a temperate climate and can be visited all year round. Due to the varying topography and ecology across the reserve, the bush is teeming with an incredible variety of game species from rhino and buffalo to leggy giraffe, rare sable antelope, herds of eland, zebra, wildebeest, big spiral-horned kudu to the fleet-footed oryx just to mention but a few. There are 300 recorded bird species in the area to add to the exquisite variety of all forms of wildlife that the reserves support.

Both lodges are ideal, not just for the serious rider looking for a horse riding safari in South Africa, but also for their non-riding companions or families. Each guest can do as much or as little horse riding as they wish and your hosts pride themselves on their flexibility to accommodate everyone's needs and wishes. Reliable ponies are available for the child rider and children are really encouraged to get stuck in learning about the wildlife of the region whilst also enjoying up-close experiences with large game.

The concept your hosts strive for is to create a luxurious bush home experience where guests can become part of a working reserve and learn about the bush by being part of the setup and viewing it from horseback. Wake-up times, meals, activities etc. are all dictated by the guests as your hosts try hard to tailor-make your stay. At each lodge are dedicated and hardworking teams who endeavour to give each guest a memorable African riding experience. Rides are always guided by two professional local guides who add to the experience their infinite knowledge of the game, flora, tracks, natural medicines and love of the bush.

Ant's Nest and Ant's Hill are owned and run by Ant Baber. The Baber family were one of the earliest pioneers in the area, settling here in 1886. Of English and Irish descent, they carry with them a love for Africa's wide-open spaces, adventure and passion for its wildlife. In the mid-1990s Ant renovated an old ranch house, which became Ant's Nest and, in 2003, Ant's Hill was built above a spectacular gorge with each room designed to make the most of the magnificent view. Both lodges can either be booked exclusively, to one group at a time, or you can book just one room, making it a wonderful destination for families, riders, honeymooners or just good friends travelling together.

Please note we can arrange a few extra days for you at Jaci's Lodge at Madikwe Game Reserve if you wish to extend your stay.

Both Holly and Cathy from Far and Ride have been lucky enough to ride here and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

McClellan saddles, made locally and based on the famous old US cavalry saddles, designed for the comfort of both horse and rider alike. A few English saddles are available.

The horses range from big strong forward going thoroughbreds, tough African Boerperd, exciting crossbreeds and reliable children's ponies.

The horses live out and graze amongst the game on a daily basis, with the lighter thoroughbreds being stabled at night when it gets cold. This has allowed the game to become used to the horses, thus giving guests a unique opportunity of really getting in and amongst the various species whilst riding as they are so accustomed to seeing the horses up close. The riding pace on the horseback safaris can vary from galloping with giraffe and wildebeest to meandering along high rocky bluffs, watching the setting African sun, or quietly riding through a herd of grazing zebra or family of rhino.

Food & Accommodation

Your hosts take great pride in their sumptuous home cooking using a delicious blend of local and international cuisine, dining outside whenever possible under shady trees. Morning riding activities often end with a bush lunch, whilst at night you sit around open fires under the stars. Excellent South African estate wines are served and all dietary requirements can be catered for.

The day normally starts off with a light breakfast of cereals, fruits, yoghurt and toast although a cooked breakfast is available on request. A light lunch with a variety of salads and other delicious dishes is usually served around midday, followed by high-tea prior to your afternoon game viewing. A scrumptious three-course dinner or barbecue rounds off the day. Should you have any special requests, such as birthday cakes or the desire to try more traditional South African meals, please advise your hosts on arrival and they will endeavour to make your wishes come true.

Accommodation

Accommodation is at either Ant's Nest or Ant's Hill, located on their own private game reserve. Both lodges are uniquely designed to blend into the natural environment around them, yet they offer open spacious living areas with the exotic splash of bright colours from African fabrics and furnishings. Heated swimming pools, a delicious blend of local and international cuisine, al fresco dining, as well as relaxing full body massages round off the experience after a day of riding. Luxury en-suite bedrooms with spectacular bathrooms and decadent waterfall showers, deep sunken baths combined with wonderful African views add to the luxury.

Ant's Nest lies in a natural amphitheatre. Originally a derelict old ranch house, it was renovated in the mid nineties and the colonial homestead with its wide verandahs has a classic African atmosphere. The luxurious en-suite rooms accommodate a maximum of only 16 guests (8 bedrooms) and are furnished in a classic style using local fabrics, timber and stone. The 15 metre pool in the garden is heated all year round. Extensive lawns and beds of indigenous plants surround the pool and home and there is a wonderful thatched chill-out spot with vast sofa beds to relax on during the heat of the day. A wide variety of game frequents the waterhole in front of the house where horses and dogs abound.

Ant's Hill is situated on the edge of a cliff and offers breathtaking views across the Waterberg. With spacious rooms and vast folding doors, the thatched lodge blends into the bush while the exotic furniture and brightly coloured African fabrics make it both sophisticated and comfortable. The draped four-poster beds are seven foot wide and each bathroom is spectacular, offering guests sunken baths and waterfall showers. Set in boulders on the edge of the cliff, the swimming pool cascades over the lip of the gorge (also heated), inducing you to relax there for hours.

You can arrive and depart any day, staying as long as you wish. The rooms consist of two privately appointed honeymoon cottages, one family cottage with a master bedroom and double or twin rooms each with their own bathroom and a third loft room with stunning views. World's View is a superior cottage which features one double and one twin room with living area and its own plunge pool. Kingfisher and Flycatcher are single rooms only and not available for double occupancy.

Karin K., May 1, 2024

It was absolutely incredible. Learned so much from the riding guides and guides. I started riding later in life so am not as experienced as the others but was totally fine with the canters - they adjust the program accordingly. My daughter went once on horseback and other times went via jeep - she had a great guide named OBK who showed her so much. We also did a bushwalk together and Ali was the most fabulous guide. Cannot wait to go back!

Roberta D., Oct. 18, 2023

The most incredible experience. (Favourite memory?) Too many to mention, but being able to get so close to the game, especially the giraffe (my favourite) on top quality horses was so special, and will remain with me forever. The horses were superb and the tack was fine. I would have liked a thicker seat saver but they were super accommodating and found me the best one they had! All the guides and volunteers were excellent. The guides were so knowledgeable and made each ride such fun.

Kay Y., Oct. 18, 2023

Amazing! (Favourite memory?) Swimming with the horses. (accommodation) was excellent!

Patricia E., July 26, 2022

Very warm welcome, beautiful accommodation, friendly staff, delicious food, great guides, amazing horses, great sightings on horseback.

Jessica H., June 29, 2022

Incredible! So many experiences you'd never imagine having. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone there. Everyone was rooting for Jason to go from waking to canter! riding as a beginner and intermediate couple was really well accommodated - we rode together every day and I still got in some really nice canters.

Orla M, May 12, 2022

Wonderful holiday. Everything was perfect - the riding, the food, the accommodation, the staff - even the weather was perfect. Favourite memory? Too many to mention but long canters on sandy paths, rhino encounters and catching up with the other guests over fabulous meals are just a few. I have been on a number of riding holidays - the food and accommodation on this trip was the best I've had to date. The horses were forward going yet beautifully mannered. The staff took time to match horses properly with riders. I rode an Arab and Arab cross each day and they were perfect.

Jane O., March 31, 2022

It was everything I had dreamt it would be. Like being in a completely different world. So, so relaxed, friendly, great food and drink, and that’s before you get to the riding and the animals.

Clemency, Jan. 8, 2020

A wonderful experience of riding in the bush getting close to the game. A stunning location with beautiful views.

Andrea, Nov. 27, 2019

Luxurious, fascinating, educational & adrenaline filled

Diane, Nov. 6, 2019

Excellent! Couldn't fault it at all, Riding with the animals and the amazing guides and staff!

Karen B., Nov. 15, 2018

This holiday was simply amazing. The accommodation, food, staff, activities and horses were second to none. I travelled alone but was made to feel welcome by the staff. (Favourite Memory?) Which one to choose?! On the rhino walk we were sat on the ground in the bush with 3 rhinos 6ft away from us! Finishing one of the rides out in the bush where the staff had prepared a BBQ and we were able to just untack the horses and let them loose right there.

Nadia & Paul, May 18, 2016

This holiday was incredible. The staff and other guests were so welcoming, the horses were amazing and the accommodation was beautiful. We really couldn’t find fault with it if we wanted to. For our final ride we asked if we could find the rhino in the bush. Our guide (Sam) took us over to Nest, tracked them and found all 10 for us to see including two young calfs –It doesn’t get much better than that! The horses were always turned out well and were perfectly suited to what we wanted. When we originally arrived we were given safe horses but were soon asking for something more forward going. Our request was granted and different horses were provided which were exactly what we wanted. The horses seem to have an incredible life living out in the bush and are very well looked after. The tack all seemed to fit and seemed perfectly fit for purpose.

Stephanie J., Nov. 25, 2015

Very Good ++ Excellent - Ant and Tessa managed to provide the holiday experience of a lifetime. Luxury accommodation, tailored to individual riding experience on great horses. The attention to detail by the staff ensures it surpassed any previous holiday experiences we've had (and we've done a lot!). Some operators promise much - Ants Nest actually delivers it - a rare jewel in a commercial world! (Favourite memory?) Sundowners with the rhino after a ride on Nyassa - superb. Accommodation is first class, absolutely no problems and staff are first rate. (Guides?) Enthusiastic & knowledgeable. Adapted the pace very well, attentive and felt safe at all times in their company. It was a first rate recommendation - thank you Sue!

Erica S., Oct. 5, 2015

CB and I have relayed to countless people what a wonderful time we had at Ant's. The wedding was flawless, from the singing and dancing staff to the passion fruit cake and everything in between.

Compliments to everyone for making our stay literally PERFECT! Penny was a fun and gracious host. The lodge was cozy, always tidy and the messages were wonderful. Chase manages the stables expertly. Riders were appropriately mounted, the horses were happy and well cared for. The natural history was fantastic. The accommodations were just right. No phone, no TV, no radio and just enough internet to check in at home. WONDERFUL! Our favorites were the outdoor shower and en suite fireplace. Compliments to Chef Eric and his kitchen staff, for the varied, local and delicious cuisine.

Everyone loved the pictures from our wedding day! Great job. It was so much fun to see them for the first time after arriving back home. The photo's with the Rhinos were the talk of the whole trip. Everyone was amazed. We are trying to educate people here on the dire state of their population. We had no idea , prior to our visit, that it is such a critical situation.

I could go on and on, but in the end, what made it so special was their ability to perfectly balance the formality and informality of the interactions between staff, guests and other guests. Remarkable, that it felt as if we were visiting old family friends.

Itineraries for a stay at Ant's Nest or Ant's Hill are individually tailored to suit and you are free to choose which of the available activities you do each day. When you arrive your hosts will explain what there is to do and you can discuss your choice of activities with them each day. The following is an example itinerary for a week's stay:

In a nutshell guides

Set on a 50 square kilometre private reserve in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains area in South Africa, Ant's Nest is a high quality and wonderfully relaxing retreat, with guest accommodation in 6 rooms and offering a wide range of activities, notably including horse-riding. Non-malarial. No lions or elephants. No minimum age.

Ant's Nest, Location

Ant's Nest is located on small a private reserve in the Waterberg Mountains area.

Ant's Nest is located in the private Ant Reserve in the Waterberg Mountains area to the north of South Africa.

Waterberg Mountains

Rising out of the surrounding plains, the Waterberg Mountains create an elevated plateau which, thanks to its unsuitability for agriculture, has managed to remain relatively wild and undisturbed.

In recent years a great deal of the land has been returned to wildlife, with smaller private areas coming together to create significant reserves.

Although these areas have significantly lower wildlife densities than better known parks like Kruger, there is still plenty to see and they do have the significant advantages of being non-malarial and having much lower visitor densities.

The lodge in this area are generally quite competitively priced, making this one of the best value safari areas in Africa.

Ant's Reserve

At 50 square kilometres, the Ant Conservancy is relatively small by safari standards, but there is something a little different going on here which means that the land is more than adequate.

Unlike the four main reserves in the Waterberg Mountains, the area does not contain larger wildlife, so no elephants, lions or cheetahs, but there's plenty of other wildlife around.

This means that guests are free to move around the area uninhibited, you can literally go for a walk on your own if you want, in great contrast to staying in a more conventional safari area. It also opens up the opportunities for a whole range of less conventional outdoors activities.

The area contains just two properties, both under the same ownership

Non malarial area

The Waterberg Mountains is a rare non-malarial safari area, along with Madikwe and a few smaller reserves in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.

This makes it very popular with anyone who would rather avoid taking anti-malarial pills, notably young children, pregnant mothers and older travellers.

Set on a 50 square kilometre private reserve in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains area in South Africa, Ant's Nest is a high quality and wonderfully relaxing retreat, with guest accommodation in 6 rooms and offering a wide range of activities, notably including horse-riding.

Getting there

The property is almost always accessed by scheduled light aircraft flights from Johannesburg into the local airstrip, from where it is a vehicle safari of around 20 minutes into camp.

It is also possible to arrive by road transfer from Johannesburg, which can be more convenient if you are already staying in the city and can be considerably lower cost if you are in a larger party. The journey takes 4-5 hours.

The lodge can also be included in self-drive trips around the country, but this is relatively unusual since the Waterberg Mountains lie a long way off the more popular routings.

We usually include all the connecting transport for your trip unless  you specifically ask us not to.

Ant's Nest, Lodge

The lodge is centred on a large main building, leading out to a nice swimming pool.

Ant's Nest, Lodge Image 1

Ant's Nest is owned by Ant and Tessa Baber, whose ascendants first settled in this area in 1886. So the family has been responsible for both claiming this area from nature and now returning it to its natural state.

They are really lovely people, as are their staff, many of whose families have also been on the property for generations. All this makes for a very intimate and personal and uncommercial experience.

The owners are key players in the Save the Waterberg Rhinos charitable trust, which seeks to protect almost 1000 southern white rhinos which live in the area, a major part of the total population. The reserve is obliged to spend an enormous amount of money each year on anti-poaching and guests are asked to pay a small levy to assist in these efforts.

Lodge notes

The lodge is centred on a large main building under thatch, with lovely lounge and dining areas leading out to terraces and swimming pool, with broad views over the surrounding hills. Guest accommodation is in six lovely rooms.

Dining options

The food service at Ant's Nest is usually very high quality.

Meals are designed to fit around the daily activity schedule, which usually involves an early breakfast followed by a morning safari activity, then lunch and a siesta back in camp, before afternoon tea, an afternoon safari activity including sundowners and then back to the lodge in time for dinner.

Evening meals are usually served at a single shared table, which is the classic safari experience, either in the main dining area or out by the campfire.

However, private tables and special meals are usually no problem.

Special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and other variations should not be a problem, so long as you let us know at the time of booking.

Power and connectivity

The property has regular 230Vac electricity available 24 hours and there are no great restrictions on using higher power items such as hair dryers.

Power outlets are South African three pin format. Adaptors are usually available, but it is always worth bringing your own, in which case we recommend buying them in advance rather than trying to get them at the airport on the way, since they often run out.

Wifi is available throughout the property, although speeds are likely to be relatively slow. There is no charge.

Regular phone signal may be available in this area.

Child policy

There is no minimum age at this property.

However the lodge is not specifically geared up for children, is unfenced and could be potentially dangerous. Adult supervision is essential at all times.

Tipping guide

In Africa tipping is definitely not obligatory, but it is commonplace. If you feel that the service provided has been excellent, then you may consider giving tips as follows ...

Lead guide : USD 10 per guest per day Assistant guide or tracker : USD 5 per guest per day Camp staff : USD 5 per guest per day

Staff understand that guests of different nationalities come very different tipping cultures and adjust their expectations accordingly, so you really should tip as you feel comfortable.

Tips are usually given in cash, USD, EUR, GBP and ZAR being the most common currencies. If you are running short of cash or prefer not to carry so much currency, it is often possible to settle tips by bank card.

Ant's Nest, Room

Guest accommodation is in six suite Rooms.

Guest accommodation is in six lovely rooms ... Sable is a "deluxe family suite" in the main building, with a private lounge and terrace, plus two attached bedrooms for a family of up to five people. Weaver is a "deluxe suite", a large space which can accommodate two adults and two children, with a broad terrace that can be used for private dining. Rondavel is a "superior standard room" in a detached circular building under thatch, suitable for two adults and one child. The Davidson is a pair of two "standard rooms" on the ground floor of the main house, the lowest cost option in the reserve. They are adjacent to each other, so can be used together by a family.

Ant's Nest, Activities

Activities include horse-back safari, vehicle safari, walking safari, mountain-biking, bush meals and night vehicle safari.

Ant's Nest offers a wide range of activities ...

Horse-riding

The joy of being able to move through the bush without an engine, but being able to cover much more ground than when walking is enormous.

The animals tend to be much more relaxed around horses than they would be if you had approached on foot. They tend to treat you as if you were simply another grazing animal.

The reserve has around a hundred horses which are suitable for everyone, from experienced riders to people who have literally never sat on a horse before, this is the place to learn.

Vehicle safari

With the absence of elephants and major predators, vehicle safari here on Leobo is a relatively lesser activity. There is plenty of wildlife to enjoy, but in a low key gentle way that best suits people who have already has their fill of major sightings.

If you do want to see these larger animals then it is possible to do a half day trip to the nearby Welgevonden Reserve, which is much larger and has the full range of safari wildlife.

Night vehicle safari

Night vehicle safari is essentially the same, but takes place under the cover of darkness, with guides using high-powered torches to spot animals.

It is a good chance to see some of the nocturnal animals in the area, including bush-babies, genets, civets and porcupines, with chances of catching up with predators such as leopards as they get out on the hunt.

Walking safari

Because the area is safe from dangerous animals, other than buffaloes, hippos and crocodiles, walking safari is really relaxing and enjoyable.

Mountain-biking

Another big activity here is mountain biking, with the reserve having a good network of trails from easy to advanced. It is also possible to visit some neighbouring reserves where there are some serious single track trails.

Animal welfare projects

You are also welcome to join reserve staff on animal welfare and translocation projects, which can be really interesting and involving.

Ant's Nest, Horseback Safari

The primary activity is horse-back safari inside the private reserve.

Ant's Nest, Vehicle Safari

Vehicle safari is also offered, but with no elephants or lions.

Ant's Nest, Kids Safari

The lodge is very child-friendly and there are lots of special activities.

Ant's Nest, Kids Safari Image 1

The best time of year is usually May-Oct, but there are reasons to visit during other months.

Ant's Nest, Downsides

The main potential downsides are the high prices, the intimacy of the lodge, the small size of the reserve, no lions or elephants, shared activities and adverse weather Nov-Mar.

Ant's Nest, like all camps and lodges, has a long list of potential downsides. Please do not be unnecessarily put off by this section. Our only intention in raising these issues is to ensure that you get to the best and most appropriate places and that your expectations are met and hopefully exceeded ...

High prices

The main problem with this property from most people's perspective are the high prices during the main May-Oct safari season.

Relative to other properties in this area, this camp is actually towards the middle of the range, but remains pricey in absolute terms.

Rates at other times of year may be considerably lower, so that may be worth considering, although the wildlife viewing does become more challenging. Check the seasonality section above for more details.

It is worth noting that there are sometimes long stay discounts available, as well as discounts for combining with other camps under the same ownership. Please ask us for more information.

Not a true wilderness

The Ant's Reserve is not a truly wild area and should not be compared with the vast wildernesses in countries further north, or even the larger reserves in the immediate vicinity.

The reserve extends over a respectable 50 square kilometres, so you really can feel that you are immersed in the bush for some of the time.

But the periphery of the reserve is completely fenced and there is often the feeling of being on a smaller plot.

Weaker wildlife

The reserve contains a decent range of wildlife, but does not have any elephants, rhinos or lions. Although these animals can be seen on day trips to a nearby reserve, overall we would tend not to recommend the lodge to guests who are in search of hard hitting animal action.

The lodge is very small, so is naturally rather intimate. This is a positive for most people, but it does mean that you need to be ready to be at least a little bit sociable.

Shared activities

In this camp separate groups of guests are often obliged to join together when out on safari. This is not necessarily a negative, sometimes it can be a great chance to get to meet some very interesting people and the best camp managers usually work hard to ensure guest compatibility. But some guests do find it to be a considerable negative.

Adverse weather

There is the potential for significant rainfall during the Nov-Apr period, usually centred on Jan-Feb, which can occasionally hamper safari activities.

However it is worth noting that the rainfall here is usually a great deal less than in Kruger, making the Waterberg Mountains a relatively good choice if you need to travel during this season.

There can be extremely high temperatures during Oct-Dec, but this is largely offset by the fact that the heat is dry rather than humid and that most of the lodges have air-conditioning.

The very low temperatures at night during May-Jul tend to be much less of an issue, although night vehicle safari can become wretched and getting out of bed early in the morning quite a challenge.

Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill are two beautiful lodges set in their own private game reserve. Ant’s was established 25 years ago by Ant Baber, whose family have lived in the Waterberg since 1865. Both Nest and Hill offer you the chance of a fabulous riding safari but there are also a range of other activities on offer. For those who prefer to walk, the guides will take you on guided bush walks. Vehicle game drives and cycling safaris are also available. A third lodge has recently opened in June 2024 called Bushwillow.

Ant Baber and his team have perfected the art of the luxurious and very personal safari. The lodges are ideal for riders and non-riders alike as activities can be tailored to suit each person in the group.

Great pride is taken in the delicious cuisine on offer. Enjoy bush breakfasts, starlit dinners around open fires or impromptu lunches beneath a shady tree. Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill not only offer a fabulous game viewing experience and a wide variety of activities; they are superb places to just relax and watch the sun go down for those needing a well-deserved break.

The guides can also take you to other places of interest in the Waterberg. For instance, you can visit bushman paintings, archaeological sites or a vehicle game drive to a nearby Big 5 game reserve. For those who are a little saddle sore or in need of real relaxation, you can enjoy a massage. All these extra activities are at an additional cost .

Game Viewing

Each reserve has a wide variety of game from rhino; buffalo; nyala; waterbuck; giraffe; eland; sable; oryx; wildebeest; red hartebeest; kudu; impala; zebra; blesbuck; warthog; bushpig and brown hyena. There are also smaller animals such as African wild cat, mongoose and more than 250 species of birds. All levels of rider can be safely taken out on horseback since there are no lion or elephant.

Ant's Nest and Ant's Hill are ideal for everyone with the length and pace of rides tailored to suit ability and experience.

ants nest riding safari

Even those who have booked as non-riders may be encouraged to ride at least once during their stay. One of the best ways to get close to game is on horseback!

The horses are ridden in South African Trail saddles and most have snaffle bridles.

Hard hats are mandatory on this ride.

Ant's Nest is the beautifully refurbished homestead of the property and can accommodate a maximum of fourteen guests. The lodge’s large stone veranda, high beamed thatched roof, classic furnishings and luxurious spacious bedrooms set the scene for a very relaxed and enjoyable stay. The main house has a comfortable sitting room downstairs with an open fireplace and a small library. In addition there is a large open veranda that offers the ideal spot for an afternoon siesta.

The lodge is set in landscaped gardens, with a heated saline pool that blends naturally into the surroundings. Nearby is a thatched chill out spot with large sofa beds for those in need of a siesta or respite from the African sun.

The following rooms are available at Ant's Nest:

Davidson Twin & Davidson Double  (Standard Rooms):

The Davidson rooms are downstairs in the main lodge. Each has a private bathroom and opens out into the garden. Both rooms can be made up as a twin or a double and Davidson Double can also be a triple room.

Flycatcher & Kingfisher (Standard Rooms):

These are two new (in 2022) rooms built downstairs, beneath the Weaver Suite. Each has a  double bed, a private bathroom and open out into the garden. Kingfisher and Flycatcher cannot be made into twin rooms. Kingfisher is the smaller of the two rooms and is only suitable for solo travelers.

Rondavel (Standard Plus Room):

The Rondavel is set to one side of the main lodge. It's a lovely room built in the traditional African circular form with high thatched roof and has an outside veranda and private seating area. The bedroom has a four poster double bed and there is also a four poster day bed so the room can be made up as twin or as a third bed for a child sharing with parents. Leading off the bedroom is an en-suite bathroom and outdoor shower. There is also a mini bar with tea and coffee making facilities.

Sable Suite (Deluxe Room):

The Sable Suite is upstairs in the main lodge and is perfect for friends, two couples or a family. The master bedroom has a king-size four poster bed and a large window overlooking the gardens and bush beyond. This leads through to a spacious bathroom with bath and shower. The second room (which has its own bathroom) is a little bit smaller and can be made up as a double, twin or a triple.

There is a spacious sitting area with comfortable sofas and a large fireplace as well as a dining area and full mini-bar with tea and coffee making facilities. This opens up on to a large veranda with shady seating area. The two Sable rooms are normally always booked as a unit. By exception on Game Census weeks and occasionally in low season it is possible for the two Sable rooms to be booked separately. When the rooms are booked separately the sitting area and veranda are shared.

Weaver Suite (Deluxe Room):

The Weaver Suite is a beautiful, spacious and light upstairs room, set to one side of the main lodge. It has a king size four poster bed. There is a large veranda overlooking the bush, perfect for relaxing with a cold drink from the mini-bar. The en-suite bathroom has a bath and separate shower. The dimensions of this room easily allow for beds to be added for two children sharing with their parents. It can also be made up as a twin room for two friends. There are tea and coffee making facilities.

Ant’s Hill

Ant's Hill is built on the edge of a gorge and offers breath-taking views across the reserve. This lodge can take a maximum of sixteen guests. The main lodge has a large sitting room and dining room with views of the gorge. Set into boulders on the edge of the cliff there is a heated saline swimming pool which cascades over the lip of the gorge.

The following rooms are available at Ant's Hill:

Eagle's Nest (Standard Plus Room):

Located above the main lodge building, this lovely room can be made up either with two twin beds or one double bed. It has an en-suite bathroom and spacious outside balcony with daybed and stunning views over the valley. There is a mini bar with tea and coffee making facilities.

Lookout (Deluxe Room):

Lookout is a stunning room with a king-size bed which can also be converted into a twin suitable for two friends. An additional bed can be added for a third adult/child. The open plan en-suite bathroom features a bath with a view; a waterfall shower and there is an outdoor shower overlooking the valley for that ‘in the bush’ feeling. The bedroom has a fireplace to keep you cozy on winter evenings and opens out onto a deck which overlooks the valley and a water hole. The room has a mini bar with tea and coffee making facilities.

Hideaway (Superior Deluxe Room):

Hideaway is a secluded luxury cottage. With a king size four poster bed it is perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway. It can also accommodate a second bed so is suitable for a child sharing with their parents or for two friends. The bedroom opens up onto the outside deck area with carved daybeds for relaxing in the shade. There is a cozy seating area inside with an open fire. The open plan en-suite bathroom features a sunken bath and French doors that open onto the deck to bring the outside indoors. There is a waterfall shower inside and an outside shower overlooking the valley. The outside deck leads down to a private sunbathing area and a private (unheated) plunge pool for cooling off in the heat of the day. This room also has a mini bar with tea and coffee making facilities.

There are also two spacious cottages at Ant's Hill. These are normally booked on a per cottage basis either by a family or group of friends. During the Game Census and occasionally in low season it is possible to book an individual room in the cottages and in this case the lounge area is a shared area.

Family Cottage :

Ideal for families of up to seven (five adults and two children). The spacious en-suite master bedroom has a king-size four poster bed and open plan bathroom with a bath and waterfall shower. The twin bedroom has two three-quarter size four poster beds and can be made up as a double or a twin. This room shares a bathroom with the loft bedroom, nestled under the thatched roof, which can sleep one adult and up to two children.

This cottage has a large sitting room, with open fire place and dining area. This opens onto a balcony with views over the valley. There is a mini bar with tea and coffee making facilities in the lounge area.

Worlds View Cottage:

For luxury and privacy World’s View cottage is the ultimate bush retreat. The double bedroom upstairs opens onto a private balcony with an outside bath overlooking the stunning valley below. The spacious bedroom downstairs, opening on to the deck area, can either be a twin; a double or a triple. It has an en-suite bathroom with a bath and an outside waterfall shower.

There is a covered veranda outside for relaxing during the heat of the day, leading to the pool area with sunbeds and a private (unheated) plunge pool for cooling off. On chilly winter evenings you can cozy up next to the open fire in the sitting room with a glass of wine from the mini-bar.

This is a new (in 2024) camp that can accommodate up to ten guests in five bedrooms. The main lodge contains a sitting and dining area along with an outdoor boma. Below the main lodge there is a swimming pool.

There are three identical rooms each with private bathroom and veranda (Buffalo, Lion and Leopard). Each has two twin beds that can also be pushed together to make a double.

There is also one cottage with two bedrooms, each with their own bathroom (Cheetah 1 and Cheetah 2). These two rooms have a shared living area/veranda.

All rooms at Bushwillow are priced as Standard Rooms.

Awesome Family Trip to Sth Africa

We took all our family, total 10 adults, and 10 grandchildren (ages 4 to 11) on safari to South Africa last August. Julie de Palo put together an amazing eight days for us. Two Lodges, Ants Hill in Limpopo Province and Etali near the Botswana border. Both places exceeded our expectations: locale, facilities, staff, food, wines, all were 1st class. Then there were the animals! Wow we saw the Big 5 and so many more. Little people loved the 'up close and personal' horse riding adventures each day at Ant's Hill. And Etali game drives wonderful and guides so informative. We couldn't fault the whole experience and all of us have vowed to return!!

Meet the stars of the show – Part 3: Ants Reserve

Meet the stars of the show – Part 3: Ants Reserve

Meet the stars of the show at ant’s nest situated in the waterberg area of south africa, the perfect place for a family-friendly horse safari..

The Ant Collection offers a family-friendly horseback safari unique to South Africa. The herd of over 90 horses live a blissful life on a private game reserve amongst the wildlife. The Ants Reserve has a large variety of wildlife, including some rare antelope species, giraffe, zebra, buffalo and rhino. As the horses are seen as part of normal daily life by the other animals, riders can get closer to the game than probably anywhere else in Africa. Plus after an amazing afternoon  ride, there is something truly special about untacking your horse and letting them wander off back into the bush with the curious giraffe gawking at them and the zebra welcoming them into the herd.

They have a variety of horses, from their trusted Fresians, resilient Arab/boerperd crosses great for endurance, fast and agile Thoroughbreds, fun and reliable Apoloosas, and the smaller speedy native Boerperds and Boerperd crossed as well as a variety of children’s ponies. All the horses are fit, reliable and responsive, providing a choice for both the professional rider and the absolute beginner. (You do not need to have ridden before). Each ride is led by two competent guides. The enthusiastic rider may wish to ride twice daily and turn their stay into a luxury riding safari. Families or couples, where some ride and others don’t, can enjoy separate activities. Basic lessons for non-riders are available and many guests learn to ride and gain confidence here.

Kilimanjaro

Appoloosa horse cantering in water

Kilimanjaro, or Kili as more fondly known is always high on the request list. Not only is he absolutely gorgeous to look at, he’s a great ride. Kili is loved by every guest who has ridden him to the point that guests will have to negotiate about who rides him should they have been to Ant Africa together before. In his previous life he was a dressage horse and loved showing off in the arena. His owners were immigrating and looking for a new home for him. While there were other offers for him, the life of adventure in the bushveld was way more appealing than being a show horse. The previous owners were sold on the fact he was going to be part of a herd with all the freedom in the world! He often hangs out with Mozambique, one of the grey Arabs but has just become best friends with Phinda. He can be quite territorial and being a big boy, will let the other horses know if they are invading his little gang’s space.

🐴  Name: Kilimanjaro 🐴  Height: 16.2hh 🐴  Breed: Appaloosa 🐴  Gender: Gelding 🐴  Age:10 🐴  Colour: Leopard Spot Appaloosa 🐴  Personality: Strong-willed yet ready to please his rider 🐴  Quirk: He doesn’t like to be alone and loves the company of mares 🐴  Suitable for: Intermediate to advanced rider 🐴  Best trait: Sweet-natured, will do anything you ask and is an attention seeker – must be why everyone falls for him 🐴  Worst Trait: Can be stubborn

Smiling girl on chestnut horse

Chilly has been on the reserve so long no one can remember where she came from! She is a sparky little mare with a huge personality! Although she can be bossy with the other horses, she is super patient with kids and has taught hundreds of children the joys of cantering. She knows her job well and is great at following the lead horse, so kids are in safe hands. They say that dynamite comes in small packages, and she proves it. She puts her ears back for almost every other horse, except Chobe. He is her one and only, a beautiful 16hh Friesian gelding and they are inseparable. They make a cute couple, but if he goes out without her, she will jump over any gate or fence in her way to get to him!

🐴  Name: Chilly 🐴  Height: 14hh 🐴  Breed: Unknown 🐴  Gender: Mare 🐴  Age:19 🐴  Colour: Chestnut going grey 🐴  Personality: Bossy, it doesn’t matter that she’s small, she has a huge personality. She will tell you when she’s cross! 🐴  Quirk: She can jump over gates from a standstill 🐴  Suitable for: Perfect kids’ pony 🐴  Best trait: Brilliant all-rounder pony and safe for kids 🐴  Worst Trait: Squeals when you put kids on her bareback for swimming

chestnut pony and Fresian

One of the originals, he was bought from a local farmer and was part of the first horses which came to Ants Hill when it opened in 2003 and has been with them ever since. He is a great all-rounder, can be used as a lead or back up horse, but is happiest with the little ones. He’s a teacher and confidence builder of new riders, children and/or riders who have had bad experiences before. He is an old soul and very sensitive to his riders and will act accordingly when he knows someone is having difficulties. But he can also judge when someone is confident enough to ride him faster and loves a good canter! He has a very loving nature and is very sociable and is happy to hang out with anyone friendly.

🐴 Name: Tomahawk 🐴 Height: 14.3hh 🐴 Breed: Boerperd 🐴 Gender: Gelding 🐴 Age:20 🐴 Colour: Paint – Skewbald 🐴 Personality: He’s really sensitive and a patient teacher 🐴 Quirk: Takes care of his riders and has a heart of gold 🐴 Suitable for: Beginner & children but all-around good ride 🐴  Best trait: Brilliant all-rounder pony and safe for kids 🐴 Worst Trait: Is a baby-sitter for children and other sick/injured horses, he is definitely an old soul and easy to fall in love with.

A few more favourites

Why ant’s nest is perfect for children.

This is one of our favourite family-focused horse safari destinations. We believe a horse-riding holiday should be a family vacation that can be enjoyed by children, parents, grandparents and anyone else who wants to join in! Give your children a life-changing experience on safari in South Africa. With a selection of wonderful ponies suitable  to both the novice and experienced child rider, they can have the chance to head out on horseback. Beginners can be led by a competent guide and riding lessons are also available. Children under 4 can be led on a pony in and around the lodge area.

Each day is tailor-made and there are plenty of activities for kids. On guided bush walks they can learn about tracks, investigate bugs and experience the scale of the bushveld. Children are welcome on game drives and for when they are not out exploring, there is archery, fishing, swimming and snake handling to occupy their free time. Special food and mealtimes can be arranged or alternatively families can dine together.

How the horses get used to wildlife

The first 2-4 weeks the horses are slowly introduced into the herd in the stables and then taken for relaxed exercise rides with other older reliable horses where they can slowly get used to the game. After this time, they are let out into the bush with the whole herd where they can get used to the wildlife with protection and knowledge of the herd to teach them. The horses live out with the wildlife and therefore become habituated very quickly, this is also why the game are very relaxed with the horses because they see them and graze among them on a daily basis.

What makes a great safari horse?

A good temperament is all you need. Some take more time to adjust than others but with their regular routine and the fact they live out and in a natural herd together really makes them settle into the perfect trail horses.

A day in the life of a safari horse in the Ants Reserve

Each guide has 5-6 horses that he/she personally cares for. All horses come in twice a day, they are fed, temperatures taken, groomed and de-ticked. Those on a ride are tacked up and taken out and the others are let out as a herd. This is done all over again in the afternoon. They try to keep all of the horses in regular work, and have a full-time horse trainer at each lodge who works on any bad habits they may have picked up and the fitness of those coming back into work from illness and injuries. When they are quieter the guides will take horses on exercise rides to keep their fitness up. At the end of each ride the horses are untacked and let off into the bush. It doesn’t matter where in the reserve they are untacked they will always make it back to the stables in time for their dinner.

Horse Care at Ant’s Nest

  • The horses live out year-round in a herd, allowing them to live naturally alongside all the other animals on the reserve including the Rhino and Buffalo.
  • They are bought in twice a day to be feed, checked, groomed and temperatures taken by our devoted guides. Our thoroughbreds and older horses get extra special carein the winter and are kept in at night, rugged, and given extra food.
  • The horses all get a physio and dentist visit at least once a year. The farrier comes every 6 weeks to shoe and check the horse which are barefoot (they try to keep as many horses as possible barefoot).
  • Saddles are specially designed for trails which mean they are comfortable for the horse, distributing the riders’ weight evenly, preventing any back issues. Our tack is checked and cleaned regularly to ensure it is kept to the best possible standards.
  • A careful record is kept of how much work each horse does to ensure they have rest days and are not overworked.
  • There is a dedicated onsite horse trainer who is continually keeping our horses in tip-top shape.

Equestrian info, guide & local team, minimum riding ability, tacking ability and participation, trip conditions and requested experience, equestrian equipment, travel info, packing list, sustainable tourism.

  • Travel light. It's a little known fact, but the lighter you pack, the better for the environment as heavy bags will produce higher emissions (when flying a plane or driving a car!).
  • Reduce plastic waste. Take your favorite reusable bottle with you. Avoid single-use bags, cups, or straws.
  • Preserve nature. Always take your rubbish with you during the ride and recycle them. Leave all the flowers or plants as you found them, and never get too close when observing wildlife. Make sure to use eco-friendly products such as body wash or laundry detergent (if camping) to protect both your skin and the environment.
  • Choose your experiences carefully. Respect animal life by not participating in any activities that abuse wild animals (shows, elephant rides, etc.).
  • Support local populations. Buy local handicrafts, be respectful of customs, and learn about the culture of local communities.
  • Share! Raise awareness among your family and friends about sustainable tourism.

Ant’s Hill and Ant’s Nest, the Waterberg: The Lowdown

Riding Safari at Ants Hill and Ants Nest

Extraordinary Africa > South Africa > Waterberg >Ant’s Hill and Ant’s Nest

If we’re honest, writing up Ant’s Hill and Ant’s Nest is something of a challenge. It’s rather tricky to convey quite how much fun a stay here is. Cantering along dusty tracks to a cold drink and a ravishing sunset, showering under a full moon, taking afternoon tea with the rhinos: what more could you want?

Should I stay at Ant’s Hill or Ant’s Nest?

Hidden away on a private conservancy in South Africa’s Waterberg, Ant’s Hill and Ant’s Nest are rustic bush homes rather than swanky safari lodges and all the better for it.  Décor is gloriously natural: gnarled wood, natural stone, and incredibly cosy. Each bedroom is different: some are built to make the most of an especially glorious view, while others are designed to accommodate the contours of a particular rock or tree.  Meals are communal and huge fun: we sat between the CEO of an international bank, and an eight year old waxing lyrical about dinosaurs. Ant’s Hill has amazing views, while Ant’s Nest felt a little better suited to a family safari , but to be honest, we’d find it hard to pick, and when we visited, there were tons of children having an absolute ball at Ant’s Hill. Best of all? Stay at both lodges and ride between them: magic.

Riding at Ant’s Hill and Ant’s Nest:

Riding safaris are the main activity at Ant’s, but this is a million miles removed from the stuffy world of pony clubs and regulated gymkhanas- after a day’s riding the horses are simply turned out onto the ranch and left to find their own way home. Olympic riders are catered to just as well as absolute novices (and we mean absolute novices- when we were there fellow riders included a grandfather and grandson who’d never been on a horse before). You’re matched with a horse that suits your comfort and skill level: from ex-racehorses to bombproof ponies. After 10 years out of the saddle we couldn’t get enough of it. Even if it did mean we spent the next 4 days waddling like a duck.

What do I do at Ant’s if I’m not a rider?

Don’t despair! Ant’s caters perfectly to families and groups with mixed interests. When we stayed some groups went hiking while others rode, all meeting up for sundowners.  There are a couple of mountain bikes for non-riders, and game drives on the conservancy too.  Or you could just have a massage and snuggle up with a book beside the pool.

Giving back at Ant’s Hill and Ant’s Nest:

When we visited, Ant was completely open: “Almost all of the profits of this place go to protecting the rhino”. Sadly rhino poaching is an increasing problem, and by visiting Ant’s you’re helping to protect the rhino both on the conservancy and in the wider Waterberg area.  If you want to get involved further, just ask at the lodge- there’s plenty to be done.  Ant’s also works with a number of excellent community projects including Pack for a Purpose. If you want to bring a donation to the community during your stay at Ant’s just visit the Pack for a Purpose site to see what’s needed most.

Horse Riding Safari at Ants Nest

I’m not really a horse rider, I’ve done a bit of pony trekking in my time, but nothing hugely significant. My daughter Milly, however, like many 7 year olds, fancies herself as something of a future equestrian so when we were offered the chance of trying out some horse riding on our recent trip to South Africa, we jumped at the chance.

After a rather eventful car journey (think pot holes, untarred roads and I will leave the rest to your imagination) we arrived at Ant’s Hill in the Waterberg Mountains north of Johannesburg.  We arrived just in time to go for a sun-downer, so our guide grabbed some blankets and whisked us off for a short game drive to a view point to watch the sun setting whilst sipping one of the best gin and tonics of my life. As I sat back and chatted to our guide, my daughter was absolutely transfixed watching a snake like procession of caterpillars on the pathway.

DSC05678

Because Ant’s Hill is primarily a riding destination, there are no predators on site, but an array of over 40 species of animals including giraffe, rhino, buffalo many species of antelope in addition, of course, to the many birds and insects. And this is actually a positive. When you’re in Big Five territory, it is easy to ignore the smaller things, but actually they are just as fascinating.

DSC05860

Over dinner we discussed riding abilities around the table with the other guests. This was what I had been most nervous about. I had had a lesson at home before I left, when my instructor told me he had never seen anyone with quite as little talent for trotting as me (he added that if it was any comfort to me, my daughter was a natural.  It wasn’t a help) I nervously admitted to my complete lack of horse riding talent and was immediately put at ease. The guests ranged from very experienced riders to complete beginners and we were divided up accordingly. Milly and I were teamed up with another family and straight after breakfast the next day, we were off.  They have 90 Horses on the farm and we were all paired with horses to match us.  The other members of the group went for a canter and we walked off at a more sedate pace. Within minutes we had spotted some giraffes grazing amongst the trees and all of the nerves dissipated. We rode on for about 2 hours, spotting rhino, antelope and yet more giraffe along the way.  And I was hooked.  Arriving back at our accommodation later on, we had lunch and then some time to lounge around the heated pool before retiring to read books from the terrace by our own private pool.

DSC05754

Even now several months later, Milly still remembers the horse riding as one of the highlights of her trip to South Africa. And surprisingly, so do I. After having done many game drives in a Land Rover, it was like a breath of fresh air being in the great outdoors, with no noises apart from the wildlife around us.  Ours was only a very brief stay, but I am convinced that if I had been able to stay there for a few days, they might even have coaxed some sort of horsemanship out of me. As for Milly, a pony now features very high on her Christmas list!

DIY: Getting Rid of Carpenter Ants in a Tree

Carpenter ants can be a problem both inside and outside your home. These ants are also unique in how they prefer to have  two sets of nests : a parent colony and satellite colonies. Carpenter ants can dig tunnels to their nests in the trees, woodpiles, and other wooden structures in your yard.

The average DIY homeowner can easily handle getting rid of carpenter ants inside of a tree. A combination of pesticides, ant baits, and prevention of excess tree moisture and decomposition are the best methods for keeping carpenter ants out of trees.

Homeowners need to be able to recognize when they have a carpenter ant problem. These ants can also be found within the home in places like baseboards and basements. This guide focuses on getting rid of carpenter ant infestations inside of trees outside.

Without ant control, carpenter ants can cause significant damage to the trees in your yard, leaving them invisibly unstable. If you can’t get rid of your carpenter ants or want an expert opinion, call an exterminator or pest control professional for recommendations tailored to your home.

  • Carpenter ants prefer wood that has an ample amount of moisture and is easy to tunnel through, which usually means rotting wood.
  • Proper identification of the pest and knowing what signs to look for in and around a tree are crucial steps in assessing treatment options.
  • Once you confirm the activity of carpenter ants, there are a few different treatment options you can consider.
  • Pesticides and ant baits are the best methods to use once you have confirmed that the problem is indeed carpenter ants.

Why Are Carpenter Ants in My Tree?

Like termites, carpenter ants are a pest that is closely associated with wood. Unlike termites, this species of ant does not eat wood but tunnels through the wood to establish its nests.

Carpenter ants prefer to nest inside of wood due in large part to the moisture content and prefer wood that has an ample amount of moisture and is easy to tunnel through. These ants prefer rotting wood or decaying wood, and are often found at the base of the tree. Once the ants find moist wood, two types of nests will typically be developed.

The parent nest or  the main nest , houses the queen and workers who forage for food sources to feed the queen and the colony. Satellite nests are secondary nests scouted by worker ants to expand the colony once a parent nest fills to capacity. These nests can be hundreds of feet apart, or even just  several feet away .

Once a decomposing or moist wood structure like a tree is found, the worker ants will excavate tunnels into the wood to build their nests. Therefore, if you find carpenter ants in a tree, the tree is likely decomposing or has sections that are rotting.

For this reason, a carpenter ant nest is unlikely to be found inside of a living, healthy tree.  Carpenter ants are likely in your tree or stump, because it’s unhealthy, dying, or dead . Acting quickly to kill carpenter ants in your tree is the best way to try to save the tree.

Steps To Identifying Carpenter Ants In Your Tree

Getting rid of carpenter ants in a tree can take some work, but it’s manageable if you have the right products. Proper identification of the pest and knowing what signs to look for in and around a tree are crucial steps in assessing treatment options.

You can take these four steps to determine carpenter ant activity and then some suggestions for treating the problem.

1: Properly Identify the Ants

The first step to take is to make sure that carpenter ants are in the tree. These ants share many common traits with termites, including infesting of wood, tunneling, and creating exit holes, producing frass , as well as causing slow deterioration of wood from their activity.

ants nest riding safari

You will typically see red, brown, or black carpenter ants, and they measure upward of 13mm in length. This species is larger than house or fire ants, and if you see ants crawling around wood, and especially inside of wood, this is a good indication of carpenter ants.

2: Look for Frass

Carpenter ants produce a substance known as frass, as the ants tunnel through wood. Frass is essentially pulverized wood, soil, and even parts of dead ants that are expelled from the inside of the nest. Frass resembles sawdust, and this is basically what it is since the ants shred wood as they burrow deep within a structure.

You can find carpenter ant frass along the base of a tree or even around tiny exit holes on the surface of a tree.

3: Look for Entrance Holes

Carpenter ant entry points are also a tell-tale sign of an infestation. The holes are small and can be found on the outside surface of the wood. The ants use these holes to leave the nest and to eject dead ants and frass outside.

Looking for entrance holes may not be enough proof, since termites also leave entrance and exit holes for the same reason.

4: Look for Signs of Deteriorating Tree Health

Lastly, you can also observe the overall health of trees. Trees that have dying branches or discolored leaves are a sign of poor health, and can be from tunneling carpenter ants.

Additionally, this can be observed if a tree was previously in good health but now shows signs of decomposition. This could be a carpenter and satellite nest causing the damage.

How to Get Rid of Carpenter Ants

Once you confirm the activity of carpenter ants, there are a few different ant-killer options you can consider. Pesticides generally will not harm surrounding vegetation.

Pesticide Sprays

Phantom  is a powerful termiticide that can also be used to treat carpenter ants. This pesticide works well because carpenter ants cannot smell or detect the chemicals. If you spray the product on entry point holes, along the tree, and the ground surrounding the base, the ants constantly crawl through it and transfer the poison to the interior nest.

Phantom can be mixed in a one-gallon sprayer, allowing you to spray all areas where the carpenter ants crawl for superior horizontal treatment. This termiticide has a strong residual effect, transfers to an entire nest, and can be sprayed on every surface on which the ants crawl. The drawback to this method is that it takes time to destroy an entire nest.

Demon WP  is another great option to consider if you prefer spray insecticides. The product comes in the form of a powder that can be mixed with water in a  one-gallon sprayer . The main chemical in Demon WP is  cypermethrin,  which attacks the central nervous system of carpenter ants, resulting in death within minutes of exposure.

The best aspect of this product is the strong residual effect once it dries onto applied surfaces. The residual remains effective for up to 3 months and will spread to carpenter ants that cross through it and pass the chemical to other ants within the nest. Demon WP has a 3-month residual, can kill an entire carpenter ant nest, and one packet makes 2–4 gallons of solution. Alternatively, it leaves a powdery residue on surfaces.

Fuse Foam  is a great option to consider if you’ve found entrances to the tunnels and want to get the fastest results possible. The product is a foam formulation that contains fipronil and imidacloprid that attack the central nervous system of insects.

Not only can this work to destroy an active nest, but it can also help to prevent reinfestation of a tree once a nest has been destroyed. Fuse foam contains two powerful chemicals, is easy to use, and is perfect for entrance holes and tunnels. This method only treats inside tunnels and galleries, though. The foam doesn’t treat the outside of the tree.

Additionally, you can also consider using Diatomaceous Earth to treat carpenter ants, but this product is most effective on surfaces and structures that are not wet. However, the product can regain its effectiveness if it is allowed to dry out.

Carpenter Ant Bait

Treating your tree can be easy to do since applying pesticides around it should do the job. If that’s not where the main carpenter ant colony is, however, you’re likely to have carpenter ants come back. Using carpenter ant bait is a great option that gives you the best chance at wiping out the entire colony.

Using a product like Advance Carpenter Ant Bait is a great way to follow an ant trail back to the main nest. You can drop the granules or a piece of food along a carpenter ant trail and keep following the trail all the way to its endpoint which is likely the main nest.

You can apply the granules all around the nest slowly, but this won’t destroy the nest entirely. Try and keep the bait as close to the main nest as possible since outdoor ant baits can also attract other types of ants.

Carpenter ant bait can kill an entire nest within a matter of days, is easy to use, use dual-action chemicals, and can lead you to the main nest. Unfortunarely, they may also draw other outdoor ants.

After Treatment: Monitor the Tree’s Health

Another important step to take is to watch a tree’s health. Carpenter ants are not typically equipped to make a nest in any regular, healthy tree, which means that there is likely some excess moisture or rot that draws the ants to the tree.

Calling on an arborist to come take a look and give an assessment of your tree is a smart move at this stage.

Natural Methods to Get Carpenter Ants Out of a Tree

Natural methods for treating carpenter ants are not often successful but can certainly be tried. As mentioned, using DE powder is one natural option to consider.

Diatomaceous earth is ineffective when wet, but you can cover the tree and all entrance holes with the product. You should be prepared to wait a while for the process to work. To coat the areas with the powder, you can use a dust applicator or you can even apply DE powder as a wet application but the product will need to dry to become effective.

Additionally, you can also use a DIY borax bait, using boric acid, to apply along the trails. The workers can spread the product to the nest that will eventually reach the queen. It may help to add sugar or some sort of protein to the mixture to encourage the ants to spread the product to the nest. Carpenter ants regularly crave either sugar or protein, so a combination is best.

FAQs About Getting Rid of Carpenter Ants

Do carpenter ants eat trees.

Carpenter ants do not eat trees or wood of any kind. This ant species eats sugars and proteins, much like many other species of ants. The destruction to trees comes from the ants tunneling into the tree to build and house their nests.

Do carpenter ants damage trees?

Yes, carpenter ants damage trees. Even though they are not eating the wood, the constant tunneling slowly destroys a tree by stripping it of its components. The ants will tunnel enough into the tree to support a nest of thousands of ants before moving on to find another satellite nest.

Do I need to cut down my tree if it has a carpenter ant nest?

You do not need to cut down a tree that is infested with carpenter ants. Trees can sometimes regenerate once the problem-causing decomposition is removed. By using pesticides and baits, you can slowly destroy a carpenter’s ant nest and avoid having to cut down the tree just to solve the issue.

Final Thoughts

In summary, getting rid of carpenter ants in a tree takes time but certainly can be done. Pesticides and ant baits are the best methods to use once you have confirmed that the problem is indeed carpenter ants.

Also, remember to monitor a tree’s health and keep an eye out for any moist or rotting wood on your property to keep the ants from infesting nearby trees.

How to Get Rid of Anthills

By Amanda Lutz Updated July 12, 2024

  • Identifying Ants
  • Locating Nests
  • Natural Removal
  • Chemical Removal
  • Preventing Anthills

Our Recommendation

If you spot an anthill in your yard, you likely have a colony of ants continuing to grow underground that could turn into a larger infestation. While removing anthills can be challenging, especially if you’re dealing with fire ants or carpenter ants , you can typically remove them on your own with the proper ant identification and subsequent treatment. In this guide, we’ll review a variety of anthill removal strategies, including natural and chemical methods, to help you get rid of anthills safely and effectively.

Identifying Ants Infesting Your Yard

Before you remove ant mounds from your property, identify the breed of ant you’re dealing with to choose the most effective treatment. Look for defining features, such as color, size, and behavior patterns. Here are a few of the most common types of ants:

  • Field ants: Field ants are a common outdoor ant species that can make their way indoors. Field ants come in a variety of colors, including reddish-brown, pale yellow, or black. They tend to construct very large mounds made of grass, twigs, leaves, and pine needles.
  • Fire ants : Fire ants are an aggressive ant species known for their fierce bite, which feels like a sting or burn. Most fire ant varieties tend to be very small and range in length from 2 to 6 millimeters. Fire ants can build a new mound made of fine dirt or soil in a matter of hours.
  • Harvester ants: Harvester ants are aggressive biters and can cause allergic reactions. Harvester ants are red, brown, or black and are relatively large compared to other ant species. Their mounds are small, rounded at the top, and made of loose soil.
  • Pavement ants: These small black ants have pale legs and antennae, with visible grooves on their heads. They can eat almost anything, including sweet and greasy foods, and often enter homes in search of food. Their mounds are small, cone-shaped hills that resemble sandhills, volcanoes, or craters. You can find these anthills in areas with little vegetation.

If you’re unsure about the type of ants you have in your backyard and can’t tell the difference between a fire ant and a sugar ant , call a professional pest control company to assist.

Locating Ant Nests and Mounds

There are a number of ways to identify an ant nest in your yard. The most obvious sign of an ant infestation is a crumbly soil mound with ants crawling in and out of an entry hole at the top of the hill. You can also look for any foraging ants roaming around your yard by examining your garden beds, pavement cracks, and foundation perimeter. Ants leave chemical trails to and from food sources to help others in their colony locate the food, so follow any ants to see if they lead you back to their mound.

Depending on the extent of your ant infestation, you may see multiple nests and satellite colonies in your yard. Locate all ant nests for your pest control to be successful. If you’ve explored the yard entirely and still can’t find any nests or mounds, consider looking for an anthill after it rains. After a rainstorm, ants tend to rebuild their mounds, giving you a good chance of finding where they nest.

Natural and Home Remedy Removal Methods

Consider using do-it-yourself (DIY) or natural ant removal methods for anthill removal before moving on to chemicals or insecticides. These methods are generally safer for kids and pets, and they’re more environmentally friendly. Additionally, most of these methods use simple items and ingredients you probably have at your disposal.

Boiling Water or Soapy Water

Pouring boiling water directly into an anthill is an effective way to kill most ants and destroy the ant mound, since the heat from the hot water will suffocate and kill the ants quickly. You can also use soapy water to kill ants since the dish soap used can coat the ants and suffocate them.

Here’s how to use this method:

  • Boil about 3 gallons of water or mix 2 ounces of dish soap with 32 ounces of water.
  • Locate the mound opening by looking for dry soil or a hole at the top of the mound.
  • Carefully pour the water into the opening. You may need to perform this treatment several times for complete ant removal.

Boric Acid Ant Bait

Boric acid ant bait is an excellent way to get rid of ants . Mix 1 cup of warm water, one-half cup of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of borax in a dish to create a liquid ant bait. Once you’ve prepared the bait, place it near any anthills in your yard.

The bait will attract and kill ants slowly, as the ants bring the bait back to the colony and poison the other insects. While this method is effective, it can also take up to several weeks to kill off the entire colony. Keep ant bait out of reach of children and pets, and always handle ant bait with care, including non-toxic options, such as boric acid.

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is another safe way to kill ants without posing a hazard to children and pets, since it’s nontoxic and safe to the touch. DE causes damage to the ant exoskeleton, causing them to dry out. Sprinkle a ring of food-grade DE around any anthills in your yard and in other areas where ants are active. While DE is nontoxic to humans and pets, consider wearing a mask during use to avoid inhaling the fine powder.

Chemical Insecticide Treatments

If you’ve tried natural approaches with no success, or if you’re dealing with a large-scale infestation, consider chemical insecticide treatments. Always use insecticides with caution and read all product labels carefully before use.

Ant Bait Stations

Ant bait stations are chemical solutions placed near ant trails to attract ants with a food source that’s been mixed with a slow-acting insecticide. The ants will carry the poison back to the colony, killing all the ants over time.

It can take several weeks before the solution works, and you may need to reapply the bait for maximum effectiveness. Always keep chemical treatments away from young children and pets.

Granular Insecticide

Granular insecticides are dry pesticide formulations used in gardens, flower beds, and lawns. Consider purchasing granular insecticides for the specific ant species, if possible. For example, Ortho Fire Ant Killer Broadcast Granules are a great option for getting rid of fire ants.

Wearing safety gloves and following the label directions, sprinkle the granules around all ant nest entrances. The worker ants will pick up the granules and carry them back to the colony, killing the ant queen and larvae.

Liquid Insecticide Drenches

Liquid insecticide drenches can kill a large volume of ants by delivering an immediate, high-concentration dose of chemicals to the colony. Carefully pour the insecticide into the nest opening, soaking the mound in the process. With large-scale infestations, you may need multiple applications. It may help to water the mound a day prior to treatment to get the ants closer to the surface.

Preventing Future Anthills

The best way to safeguard against ant mounds and infestations is to prevent anthills throughout the year. Here are a few ways to prevent ants in and around your home:

  • Create a barrier: Spread a perimeter of diatomaceous earth or crushed eggshells around the foundation of your home to prevent ants from entering.
  • Eliminate standing water: Ants flock to standing water, so fix leaky faucets and pipes promptly, and grade the yard to prevent puddles.
  • Maintain your yard: Keep vegetation trimmed and properly pruned, never allowing it to grow unfettered around your house. Remove any dead wood that might attract ants and other insects.
  • Remove food sources : Clean up food and drink spills promptly, keep trash sealed, and store pet food properly.
  • Seal entry points : Use caulk to seal all entry points around your home, patio, foundation, windows, walls, and doors.

Anthills around your property are an eyesore and can lead to larger infestations if not tackled immediately. If you have ants in your yard, try to identify them so you can know how to best proceed with removal methods. Start with natural or DIY solutions, since they’re better for the environment and less dangerous to pets and young children.

However, don’t hesitate to employ chemical insecticides for ants that just won’t go away. For large-scale infestations, consider hiring a professional pest control company to customize treatments for you and your home. Remember that ant management is an ongoing process that requires diligent prevention, so take the appropriate prevention steps to keep ants away for good.
